Popular Reviews

The Pleasure Principle by Gary Numan

Listening once is probably worth it, but it would get very annoying if you did more than that.

Inspiration Information by Shuggie Otis

Some of this album didn't age well. Obviously using current tech and just fascinated with it. But a lot of it is still good.

White Blood Cells by The White Stripes

Fantastic album with different sound for 2001. This album enhanced my appreciation of music.

Aug 22 2025

It's hard to believe this was 1978. Such an 80s punk sound, must've been one of the OG's. Perfect for a Friday afternoon of work.

Seventeen Seconds by The Cure
Aug 25 2025

This is definitely a moody Cure I don't normally listen to.

Definitely Maybe by Oasis
Aug 26 2025

This was about as "meh" as rock can get. The album cover says it all, normal room with some dudes. definitely maybe.

That's The Way Of The World by Earth, Wind & Fire
Aug 27 2025

I really liked song 1, "Shining Star", but then the album is pretty mellow. It's great though, really good band.

The Specials by The Specials
Aug 28 2025

This is a great album. So different from anything in that time. And of course the legendary "Message for Rudy"

C'est Chic by CHIC
Aug 29 2025

A very light album aside from "le freak". Everything is very mellow and chill. Enjoyable.

Elvis Presley by Elvis Presley
Sep 01 2025

Some greats on here. I'm surprised he did Tutti Frutti so fast, it felt a little overdone.

The Atomic Mr Basie by Count Basie & His Orchestra
Sep 02 2025

What an amazing album. Why did this music every go away. It's just fantastic.

Sep 03 2025

This is widely different. So cool for 1963. I found I could just have it on and enjoy it while doing other things, or I could focus on it completely and hear the little nuances

American Pie by Don McLean
Sep 04 2025

Every song on this album is just great. So 70s folk. Of course the lead is really good. The rest have a nice mix of mellow and bangers

Master Of Puppets by Metallica
Sep 05 2025

This album is very consistent. For a death metal style it's probably what you are looking for.

Five Leaves Left by Nick Drake
Sep 08 2025

This is not something I would normally listen too. I wish it had _why_ it was one of the 1001 albums you must here. Was this original at the time? Something new? The songs are good, but just too light and mellow for my taste.

Boston by Boston
Sep 09 2025

Wow! What an amazing album. Hard to believe this was mostly one guy in his basement. So many great songs and the production quality is almost too good.

Led Zeppelin by Led Zeppelin
Sep 10 2025

1969 - Crazy. Definitely a leader in this sound. The album was really good. No stand outs, but generally awesome.

Out of Step by Minor Threat
Sep 12 2025

This is some serious 80s punk

Licensed To Ill by Beastie Boys
Sep 15 2025

This one has an unfair advantage. I had this album and listened to it thousands of times, it's ingrained in my brained

Play by Moby
Sep 16 2025

There's some serious tracks on this one. I'd call it "ambient" music. Just leave it on in the background while you work

Live And Dangerous by Thin Lizzy
Sep 17 2025

This is the best I've heard Thin Lizzy. The live album is better than their recorded

Metal Box by Public Image Ltd.
Sep 18 2025

Very different. I really liked the background music, but could've done without the vocals.

I'm Your Man by Leonard Cohen
Sep 19 2025

This is some standard Leonard Cohen work. Not my favourite versions of some of the tunes.

The Stranger by Billy Joel
Sep 22 2025

What a fantastic album. This entire thing is great.

Dusty In Memphis by Dusty Springfield
Sep 23 2025

This is a very "easy-listening" album. She has an amazing voice and some great songs.

Forever Changes by Love
Sep 24 2025

This is NOT my style of music at all. I can still hear the talent in it, but I would never listen to this normally.

Abbey Road by Beatles
Sep 25 2025

It's a good album, but not their best. I think it was revolutionary for the time maybe?

Harvest by Neil Young
Sep 26 2025

It's really too bad he couldn't get someone else to sing his songs. I've never been a fan of that voice, but listening to this entire album makes me feel justified in that. Great Canadian, but horrible singer, not sure how he became as big as he did, but I guess Justin Bieber did too and he's also a horrible singer.

Debut by Björk
Sep 29 2025

This is pretty much how I remember Bjork. It was certainly different for the time, and had that one hit that pushed it into main stream

Maggot Brain by Funkadelic
Sep 30 2025

This was very different. Not really my thing

Exodus by Bob Marley & The Wailers
Oct 01 2025

A great album. I really enjoyed listening to this one.

Solid Air by John Martyn
Oct 02 2025

Yeah, so that's an album. I used to think I had a mumbling problem. Turns out I'm just a rock star. Very different stuff on this one. He mentions it's fuelled by cocaine and mary-jane ... you can kind of tell.

Oct 03 2025

I imagine this was quite the album for 1981. I own it, and I still just like the one song.

The Queen Is Dead by The Smiths
Oct 06 2025

This is definitely the Smiths. I always feel like you have to be in the right mood for the Smiths, but when you are, they crush it.

Blur by Blur
Oct 07 2025

The fact that this album was included makes me think the book came out about the same year. One hit wonder.

Live At Leeds by The Who
Oct 08 2025

I was never really into The Who ... hearing it live doesn't make me more into it ... I think The Who and Me are in two different worlds.

We're Only In It For The Money by The Mothers Of Invention
Oct 09 2025

This wasn't what I was expecting. It's definitely different but none of the faves. I could never see myself putting this on a record player and listening to it, but I guess you had to be there

Electric Ladyland by Jimi Hendrix
Oct 10 2025

I feel bad, but Jimi Hendrix is just not my thing ... It always feels like they should have rehearsed together more. It's like 6 people playing their own thing and not worrying about what anyone else is playing ...

Paul Simon by Paul Simon
Oct 13 2025

Paul Simon is always great. Enjoyed this one.

Back In Black by AC/DC
Oct 14 2025

Well, you get what you want from this album. It's AC/DC all the way down.

Nowhere by Ride
Oct 15 2025

So meh, it's not even worth talking about. Meh, meh, meh.

Guero by Beck
Oct 16 2025

This is definitely one of Beck's better albums. A few bangers on there.

Nixon by Lambchop
Oct 17 2025

I don't think this was supposed to be in the book ... are we sure this list didn't get hacked? This sounds like my grandpa singing some poetry he found in readers digest, with a Casio keyboard demo beat, in Walmart ... How is this on the list? Explain to me why!

Parachutes by Coldplay
Oct 20 2025

It's OK. It certainly has a style, and the whole album flows together, but I do wonder if you took out the gaps would you even realize it wasn't just one long song.

Either Or by Elliott Smith
Oct 21 2025

This certainly makes you feel sorry for Elliott. The melancholy and sadness in the songs is just depressing. I can't imagine they brought him much joy. Not sure why this is on the list. Unless as a warning to others; bring joy, the world already has enough sadness.

I See You by The xx
Oct 22 2025

This is a very different album. Unique style.

To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar
Oct 23 2025

I can see why he became famous. Some songs feel like they were just thrown together though. Swears so much it loses all meaning.

Innervisions by Stevie Wonder
Oct 24 2025

The man is just an awesome signer/songwriter. Beautiful album.

Superfly by Curtis Mayfield
Oct 27 2025

This dude was just so cool.

Figure 8 by Elliott Smith
Oct 28 2025

Immediate thought: Elliott Smith again ... how depressed was the team that made up this book? After listening though, it wasn't as bad as the other album. Still melancholy but not to the point of hopelessness.

Is This It by The Strokes
Oct 29 2025

This feels like 1,001 albums you won't believe got a record deal I'm not sure how this band got out of their garage. No catchy tunes, no inspiring tunes, no "I get that feeling" tunes. Just random blah blah blah with piss poor singing and almost good musicians. You could easily get this quality by walking down the street and listening to random garages ... I got song 8, but I'm just going to listen to my toilet drip now instead of the last 3 songs.

Let's Get It On by Marvin Gaye
Nov 03 2025

Added one song to my liked list, so that's something. Fantastic singer, just not my cup of tea.

Thriller by Michael Jackson
Nov 04 2025

This and Weird Al's Eat It were the first albums I owned. Given to me for my 12th birthday. Likely due to that it has a special place in my heart. That said the songs are amazing and leading of with "Wanna be startin somethin" what a perfect track one.

Real Life by Magazine
Nov 05 2025

Yeah, this is just shit isn't it?

My Aim Is True by Elvis Costello
Nov 06 2025

An excellent album, very cool. Enjoyed it quite a bit.

New Wave by The Auteurs
Nov 07 2025

I noticed immediately that this album has very few listens. After listening, I knew why. But WHY did it make the 1,001 albums you MUST here ... I think it's because it's such a rarity. Until this app was made, I think there were 6 people who had heard it before, and you could be the 7th. But of course, now with the app, I was like the 27,000th, still not bad. I can say I was OG to hear this one.

Your Arsenal by Morrissey
Nov 12 2025

Best Morrissey album I've heard.

The Yes Album by Yes
Nov 14 2025

Great rock album. A lot I haven't heard before.

Chirping Crickets by Buddy Holly & The Crickets
Nov 17 2025

He did more songs than I realized. Great album.

British Steel by Judas Priest
Nov 18 2025

This was better than I thought it was going to be. Pure heavy metal without the gravy

Car Wheels On A Gravel Road by Lucinda Williams
Nov 19 2025

This was really good. Much better than I thought it was going to be based on the title/cover. Really enjoyed it in the end.

School's Out by Alice Cooper
Nov 20 2025

It's not what I thought it would be. I assumed the whole thing was like School's Out, but it's quite the variety.

One World by John Martyn
Nov 21 2025

Funky but chill. I liked that one song.

Garbage by Garbage
Nov 24 2025

I like this more now than I did when it came out.

Hot Shots II by The Beta Band
Nov 26 2025

This album being on the list pretty much makes the whole list invalid. There is never a reason to listen to this. NO ONE dies with regret over not hearing this album. I'm sure people LIVE with regret that they've heard it. It's like some guys got together in their basement and made a thing ... anyone could do it (and 90% would do it better)

The Pleasure Principle by Gary Numan
Nov 27 2025

Listening once is probably worth it, but it would get very annoying if you did more than that.

Ragged Glory by Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Nov 28 2025

He really should've hired a singer.

Can't Buy A Thrill by Steely Dan
Dec 02 2025

Great album, I could totally see picking this up

Face to Face by The Kinks
Dec 03 2025

Fun album by a great group.

Dec 09 2025

Cool fuzz effect ... then less cool ... then less cool ... then annoying fuzz effect.

The Clash by The Clash
Dec 10 2025

Every song on this album is mint.

Logical Progression by LTJ Bukem
Dec 11 2025

Song 1: Me in my basement at 12 years old playing the same thing over and over again and thinking it's cool Song 2: The next day I found a different chord Why are these 1 minute songs all 7 minutes long?

Exile On Main Street by The Rolling Stones
Dec 15 2025

This makes great background music to doing something else.

Urban Hymns by The Verve
Dec 16 2025

One song ... not sure if it's a must listen album

Swordfishtrombones by Tom Waits
Dec 17 2025

This was different. I can see this being on a list of albums you should check out as it's unusual, you may discover a new style of music you enjoy.

Woodface by Crowded House
Dec 18 2025

These guys are just so good. What a different sound and the harmonies are amazeballs.

The Holy Bible by Manic Street Preachers
Dec 19 2025

Hey! Finally an album that's unique and cool enough to be on this list. Only took listening to 100, so likely 1% of this list is actually worth listening too. Enjoyed the difference.

The Band by The Band
Dec 30 2025

What a great album. The album keeps a consistent feel across the whole thing.

Power In Numbers by Jurassic 5
Dec 31 2025

What a great album, I'm surprised I've never heard of this before. Great listen.

The Next Day by David Bowie
Jan 05 2026

Seems somewhat plain these days. Must've been different back in the day.

Phaedra by Tangerine Dream
Jan 07 2026

Now I know what stoners listened to in 1974.

Frank by Amy Winehouse
Jan 08 2026

What a voice

The Man Machine by Kraftwerk
Jan 13 2026

This had to be so unique in 1978

Teen Dream by Beach House
Jan 14 2026

This was a super chill album. Not bad to listen at all.

Electric Prunes by The Electric Prunes
Jan 15 2026

A bit of a classic 70s sound.

Green River by Creedence Clearwater Revival
Jan 19 2026

So good

Repeater by Fugazi
Jan 21 2026

This is kind of generic for the genre.

Hysteria by Def Leppard
Jan 22 2026

What an album. Never my style of music ... or maybe it is since there's nothing not to love on this disc

Aja by Steely Dan
Jan 27 2026

Great album. Good flow throughout.

Djam Leelii by Baaba Maal
Jan 28 2026

Not a fan. The voice is a little irritating

Back to Mystery City by Hanoi Rocks
Jan 30 2026

I'm surprised I haven't heard of these guys before. Very typical 80s rock. Not that bad at all, but also nothing that stands out.

Tusk by Fleetwood Mac
Feb 02 2026

Great album to just put on and relax.

Cloud Nine by The Temptations
Feb 03 2026

These guys are soo good

Such a cool smooth album.

Mama's Gun by Erykah Badu
Feb 11 2026

So smooth and soulful.

Melody A.M. by Röyksopp
Feb 12 2026

This is why I signed up for this list. New to me and just awesome. Can totally seeing coding away while this plays.

Come Away With Me by Norah Jones
Feb 16 2026

Fantastic. I remember when this came out, it was so different from pop but managed to attract a wide audience.

Fear Of A Black Planet by Public Enemy
Feb 17 2026

A lot of good tracks on this album. I had this back in 1990 on cassette. Ahh, those were the days. Having to wait to get home to put it on and hear the tracks.

Tracy Chapman by Tracy Chapman
Feb 18 2026

This is a great album. So unique to what was out at the time and even now still holds it own. Fast Car has been redone so many times because it's a legend

Low by David Bowie
Feb 19 2026

I'm assuming this was added to show that even big stars can make a steaming pile

Songs Of Leonard Cohen by Leonard Cohen
Feb 20 2026

Definitely one of his better albums and deserves to be on this list.

Californication by Red Hot Chili Peppers
Feb 23 2026

Just not my thing. Second RHCP album on the list and I just find it uninteresting.

Tapestry by Carole King
Feb 24 2026

Wow. I had no idea all these songs were written by the same person. Amazing album. I'll be listening to more of this.

Autobahn by Kraftwerk
Feb 25 2026

When you put a 22 minute song on an album, it better be good. For 1974, I think this was different. It was unique and new! But now it's stale and repetitive. Sounds like early AI music, which is stunning considering how far away AI was ... :D

Rubber Soul by Beatles
Feb 26 2026

What a great album. Just having the in my life song would sell me.

Deja Vu by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Mar 03 2026

Some good tracks on this one. Total classics.

Mar 04 2026

another one of thes 20 minutes lead-off songs. I'm not sure how this got a record deal ... sounds like guys futzing with stuff ... I guess if you were incapable of futzing yourself, you might want to listen to someone elses futz?

Inspiration Information by Shuggie Otis
Mar 05 2026

Some of this album didn't age well. Obviously using current tech and just fascinated with it. But a lot of it is still good.

Stankonia by OutKast
Mar 06 2026

Some good tracks on here and some that feel like they were just experimenting and said wtf, throw it on anyway.

Catch A Fire by Bob Marley & The Wailers
Mar 10 2026

I wish I knew why this was on the list. 1973 ... so maybe it was new and novel at the time.

Hunky Dory by David Bowie
Mar 11 2026

Probably very different for its time, but seems a bit dull now.

The Cars by The Cars
Mar 12 2026

This is a great album. Or at least it starts great :D

Justified by Justin Timberlake
Mar 13 2026

Meh. But a lot of meh. Almost an overabundance of meh, but it doesn't even do that.

Funeral by Arcade Fire
Mar 16 2026

Different for sure. Calm and cool, but not really my thing.

Tidal by Fiona Apple
Mar 17 2026

Much better than I thought it would be. The one big song, but the rest were pretty chill and bluesy.

Mar 18 2026

Early Chicago. They got better after this, but I'm assuming included in the list since it was new.

A Wizard, A True Star by Todd Rundgren
Mar 20 2026

Now this is different. In 1972 this had to be way out there. And yet it's not just noise and could have been made last year.

Parklife by Blur
Mar 24 2026

Not too bad, a couple good songs on there. They really do a lot of different stuff.

Feast of Wire by Calexico
Mar 25 2026

Different sound. Has a chillaxed feel. I didn't hate it.

Zombie by Fela Kuti
Mar 26 2026

4 songs to the whole album. Sometimes I think that qualifies it for this list automatically. So many albums on the list that have 12-20 minute songs. Felt pretty chill though. Not sure what was special back in 1976, I imagine it was "new"

Suzanne Vega by Suzanne Vega
Mar 27 2026

She got better. I said what I said, and I stand by it.

White Blood Cells by The White Stripes
Mar 30 2026

Fantastic album with different sound for 2001. This album enhanced my appreciation of music.

At Fillmore East by The Allman Brothers Band
Mar 31 2026

Not really my thing, but very well done. I could see enjoying this live.

Rumours by Fleetwood Mac
Apr 01 2026

Fantastic album. Something for everyone on this.

In Rainbows by Radiohead
Apr 02 2026

I could see listening to this album, but I would never just listen to any of the songs on their own. All or nothing.

Beautiful Freak by Eels
Apr 03 2026

Not something I would listen to on the daily. Could be good background music while reading though.

Horses by Patti Smith
Apr 06 2026

I feel like some albums aren't meant to be listened to. The music is secondary to the message. This is one of those albums.

My Generation by The Who
Apr 07 2026

I've never got The Who. Always feels like sloppy for the sake of sloppy. Maybe it was part of a revolution at the time?

Aftermath by The Rolling Stones
Apr 08 2026

A couple cool songs. Got this album right after The Who and it's just too much British loosey goosey for me in a row. We CAN play really well, but how do we make it sound like we never rehearsed this before

Giant Steps by The Boo Radleys
Apr 09 2026

Experimental Poop

Apr 17 2026

The shit version of great songs. This is a must listen to album so you can see how crap live recording was in the 80s. Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

Led Zeppelin II by Led Zeppelin
May 08 2026

Song one started great ... then just became them futzing around for a few minutes .. then returned to good.
