Absolute classic. Get the highest quality headphones you can lay your hands on & listen to some of the best bass playing you'll ever hear.
Brilliant from start to finish - exactly what I joined this list for. An absolute gem that i’d have never otherwise known about.
Fabulous. Just fabulous. One reason for doing this is to 'discover' prominent artists who despite attaining global prominence have somehow stayed off my radar. I'm now a fully certified kd fan. Thank you
The TV recording is off the scale brilliant. https://youtu.be/PSLsfwTbo4Q

Never got Hendrix, never will. Fantastically skilled music and but just not my taste
The video for Stress is certainly very disturbing & makes an impact in the way it was intended to. That apart, for someone of my era I like a surprising amount of electronic & dance music & I'm sure there are many undiscovered gems still waiting for me but this incoherent cacophony isn't one of them.
Fantastic!
‘Shout me Out’ has really grown on me after 2/3 plays but most of the rest feels disjointed & unharmonious, & the songs phase very awkwardly. 2008 must have been a very thin year if this was one of the top albums
Fantastic musicianship & writing, but the lyrics are about a lifestyle I can’t relate to & I’m afraid Joni isn’t for me, I’ve just never been a fan.
Jumping Jaysus my ears hurt, just make this stop. Every track’s the same - and they’re all sh1te
What an absolutely fantastic album.
Vile, loser-culture lyrics, set to pleasing melodies. But hey ho, not as aggressively shouty & dreadful as I was expecting.
One of the formative albums of my youth & the first band I saw live (Sheffield City Hall, 1972). I haven’t heard it for years & it probably wouldn’t be my choice of music these days but it’s great to listen to it again & even greater to see so many classic tracks, such as Highway Star, Child in Time , Smoke on the Water, & Strange Kind of Woman, holding up so well.
Mostly pleasant, if somewhat bland.
Fabulous!!
Nice reggae beat but the tracks start to get repetitive after a while.
Fabulous. Just fabulous. One reason for doing this is to 'discover' prominent artists who despite attaining global prominence have somehow stayed off my radar. I'm now a fully certified kd fan. Thank you
A truly beautiful album that I will return to & listen to many times. Northern Sky, Poor Boy & Hazy Jane are all outstanding
Absolutely can’t stand Iggy Pop so this was very much a ‘duty listen’. Turns out that I Wanna Be Your Dog, No Fun & Real Cool Time are very listenable, & the clear pre-punk influence was interesting. Nowhere near as awful as I was expecting.
Awful. Jezebel lyrics are interesting & I guess the albums’ an insight into a violent loser culture I’lol never understand
Background music
‘Everybody Hurts’ is epic but after playing the album 3 times I’m struggling to find anything else I’ll listen to again.
Aggressively shout foul, violent lyrics to a catchy beat, keep going for 3-4 minutes & repeat 16 times.
One of my favourite albums
This is really growing on me!!
Mundane
Like these guys actually but not really my taste musically
Grim
'Loaded' of course is immense but I'm struggling to find much else that I'll listen to again
Bubblegum pop that tires really quickly.
An incoherent, discordant mess that’s seriously painful on the ears.
Brilliant from start to finish - exactly what I joined this list for. An absolute gem that i’d have never otherwise known about.
Classic ‘70’s shagging music!
A good friend knew Lemmy back in the ‘90’s & before I got to know her, & says he was an absolutely top, top bloke. RIP. But much as this makes me want to feel otherwise, I’m afraid this isn’t my music, its just awful. throughout.
Vile
Outlook Club, Doncaster 1977. Happy days!
Every bit as awful as expected. My resolve to listen to all of whatever turns up & give everything a fair crack of the whip has certainly been tested to the full by this album.
Not as bad as most of its ilk
Way better than I thought, proof that ‘rap’ doesn’t have to be about shouty aggressive lyrics & it’s piqued my interest in his other work, especially the non-rap stuff.
Some guitar riffs & a couple of tracks that have grown on me but I mostly didn’t enjoy this album, it’s just not my kind of music. But then ‘Angels & Fuselage’ came along & honestly it’s one of the most moving tracks I’ve ever heard.
One of the favourite albums of my ‘20’s. “Psycho Killer” remains magnificent but I’m afraid much of the rest hasn’t aged well.
Vile. There’s something seriously wrong with humanity when so many people can give 5 stars to this violent, homophobic, misogynistic loser trash.
My goodness, this is seriously sh!te
A favourite from back in the day that hasn't been on my radar for decades. It's held up way better than I thought it would.
The TV recording is off the scale brilliant. https://youtu.be/PSLsfwTbo4Q
Surely one of the most over rate albums ever
Album No. 191 & a serious candidate for being the worst of all. The notes promised me an “album that spans several genres”; well if ‘aggressive’, ‘repetitive’, & ‘shite’ count as different genres then it delivers on that promise. I just have no words to describe how awful this is from start to finish.
There isn’t a single track on this album which either improves the original, or failing that, at least showcases it in a different & interesting way. Some are saccharine karaoke poor & his rendition of ‘On the Sunny Side of the Street’ is nothing short of an abomination. Considering the amalgamation of time, effort & talent that went into it’s making, this must be one of the most pointless albums ever released.
Back in the days when he was merely a great musician. What a shame he became the person he is now
No cliche, musical or lyrical, is too tired for this album. I knew it would be awful but even I wasn’t prepared for this bad.
Loved this!! Brilliant bass playing, simplicity done really well.
It was always beyond me, back in the day, how on earth this cacophonous discord was ever a rated album & it still is. The only difference is that I can no longer be bothered to wonder why.
Absolutely loved this, great discovery for me, thank you
Surprised myself, I really lined this.
That was a tough old listen. And next up, some sh!te from Beastie Boys. On a poor run here....
No question that he's an self-regarding arsehole of the very highest order, but I have to say that I really enjoyed listening to this & I'm fairly certain it'll grow on me after a few more plays.
Jumping Jesus that really was shite
Truly awful. Definitely among the top 10 worst albums from the 400+ I've heard since I've been doing this.
There's a reason most people have never heard, or heard of, any track on this album apart from 'More Than a Feeling'. Any album that leads with a 'signature track' which showcases everything that's bad about 1970's American stadium rock & goes downhill from there is likely to be a tough old listen, & so it was.
Since I started this I must have listened to 150 different "American Rock Group" albums and honestly, I'd struggle to tell the difference between any of them. This album? Just the latest addition to the list of yawn. (Love their activism btw but that's not what I'm here for!)
Well, I wasn't expecting that!! This album is an absolute joy.
Well Roger Waters turned into an obnoxious apologist for this century's biggest war criminal so far, & the 67 year old man doesn't worship this album as the 17 year old boy did, but it's still up there with the very best.
'American rock band'. Groan
Fabulous. A proper pop singer showing that the genre can be so much more than lightweight bubble gum pop peddled by the likes of Taylor Swift & Britneeeeee.
What sort of brain donor listens to utter shite like this?
Strewth that was painful. I actually liked 'Stay' a lot so I'm giving this album a wholly unmerited 2 stars. Every other track, without exception, is excruciatingly bad: discordant & disjointed tunes, sounds like industrial drumming that appear out of nowhere & into where they don't belong & embarrassing 6th-form lyrics. I like a lot of early-80's synth pop & heard a fair bit of it back in the day, courtesy of being a mature student when it was in vogue, so when this one came up I was wondering how I'd missed it first time around. And know I know - it's just awful.
A very mixed bag but 'Hollywood Symphony' is an absolute gem.
Surprised myself with this one, really enjoyed it & I'm sure it'll improve with further listening.
Absolute classic. Get the highest quality headphones you can lay your hands on & listen to some of the best bass playing you'll ever hear.
This is the angriest this project has made me. I want the 2 and a half hours of my life back that have been wasted listening to this self-indulgent garbage.
"The Sgt Pepper of Shit Slop". Someone's having a larf. Utter shite from one of the most risible bands of all time.
A couple of classics & a lovely voice but very much of it's time & not all of it's aged well.
Never heard of this band or album but absolutely loved it. Not hard to see why it has won son many accolades, they're well deserved.
An hour of my life wasted.
The people who "largely ignored" this album on it's release most certainly made the correct choice.
Won't be rushing to listen to this again but it was nowhere near as bad as some of the reviews suggested.
Proper grown-up singing & musicianship that the parade of hip hoppers, crappers & roooooaaaaaar merchants will never posses as long as they have a hole in their bottom.
The first album I ever brought. The title songs remains imperious & renders nearly all subsequent re-issue risible in comparison. And there's so much more as well. Timeless.
Bang average album that was heading for a bang average 3, but their desecration of Mrs. Robinson requires a 1 point deduction.
They're from my part of the world, one of them even supports my team (Sheffield Wednesday). I've never met any of them but I know they're all top blokes who haven't let success or worldwide fame go to their heads. So, I'm really sorry to do this chaps, but this really, really isn't my thing.......
Couple of duff tracks but on the whole I loved this & it's got better on a second play (apart from the couple of duffers!).
Unbelievably bad.
Any of the following is an instant 1-star: -Roooooaaaaaarrrrrrr -Thrash guitars - Lyrics containing the word 'motherfucker' This pile of shite has all three in abundance & no redeeming features whatsoever.
A couple of the early songs are worthy of an audience but I don't think this album should have been released - it's painful to listen to someone who's mental state is clearly deteriorating. I don't
The marking scale needs minus points to accurately rate shit like this.
Haven't heard this for decades!! It's "of it's time" of course but some of it hasn't aged as badly as I thought it would. Doubt I'll be in hurry to schedule the next listen but there's plenty worse on here.
I've become quite partial to a bit of shoe-gaze so I wasn't expecting this tuneless, mumbling mess. Musically it lost me in the first 5 seconds & never got me back. And I have no clue as to it's lyrical merit - passing such judgement requires the lyrics to be audible.
Disgusting. Shame on you for including this.
I never liked the little I've heard of their music - a mate in the '00's was a monster fan - & I always thought Ian Brown came across as a very unappealing character. Both views were formed years ago & before Brown's transformation during & after covid into one of the UK's foremost public idiots, and in combination were more than enough to prevent me from exploring them further. So it was with a very heavy heart when this came up that I recalled my vow that everyone gets a chance & I'll listen to every minute of whatever gets listed. Well, I was clearly listening to the wrong Stones Roses tracks, because - through the most heavily-gritted of teeth - I have to say that this album is utterly brilliant, almost every track has gone straight into my library & will be played plenty of times in the future. And that just goes to show one of the reasons for doing this - to bring to bear a greater knowledge that will challenge & sometimes change, strongly held views.
Well, didn't this one bring out the haters. I liked the title track, the rest is largely a pleasant inoffensive mush so I'm not going to die on a hill for this album but it doesn't come close to justifying the vitriol it's attracted on here. This is album 632 for me & at least 25% of those have been a much tougher listen than this was.
A poor man's Deep Purple really. I feel I outgrew this stuff by the time I hit 20; so it's not for me but I can understand why they'd be pretty good for heavy rock fans. Nothing against it, just not my taste.
Back in the day he was one of those artists we'd all heard of, but none of us had ever much listened to. Don't know why. Sadly, this has left me feeling that we didn't miss out on something. I just don't have the heart to put it in the 1 star bin with all the Rap, Hip Hop & roooooaaaaaaar shite, but in all honesty that's where this belongs.
Well this is a strange one. My immediate thought was WTAF is this? And I kept on thinking that until I got to 'New You' which absolutely blew me away. I've played it time & time & honestly it's hypnotic. But then the rest of the album reverted to being a horrendous, discordant mess. So then I've thought that it needs a couple more plays to see if it will grow on me, but it's still one superlative, entrancing track on an album that's otherwise the most gad-awful insult to my eardrums. So how to rate this? 5 stars for the one brilliant track, minus stars for the rest if I could so I'll have to settle in the middle.
The lyrics have aged worse than milk in a greenhouse, but the melodies & harmonies are still great & it stands as a good testament to a very different & bygone era.
Absolute all-time banger of a classic, one great song after another, & showcasing different African music styles to ears that would never have otherwise heard them. And this version comes with a side-order of entertainment courtesy of predictable yawning about 'cultural appropriation' by self-appointed custodians.
Alexa: "Find me an album which showcases everything that was truly naff about the '70's"
Love 'Hotel Yorba' but after hearing it the first time I thought it was a track that was leading me to a new discovery, not the one that saves this album from a 1 star.
I can just about get that at peak-80's some record company exec agreed to release this, thinking anything with a synth in it was guaranteed to generate £'s. But why the hell does it make this list.....??
Can't believe it's 50 years since this came out!! Going back another 50 years takes us to 1924. Music, & society as a whole changed WAY more in the 50 years preceding this album's release than in the 50 years since.
Well that's a mixed bag for sure. But there's some gems among the 'difficult' stuff & their re-make of 'Life is Life' / Opus Dei is nothing short of brilliant. Several other tracks are growing on me as well.
Perhaps perversely I get why an album this shit is on the list, for it being very early Nick Cave. But it is terrible...!!
There's always a little concern when an album that much-loved aback in the day but has been off the radar for years, crops up on here, especially with a band like OMD who seemed very '80's No need to worry on this one it's as good as it ever was.
Negative stars are needed to accurately rate an absolute steaming pile of dogshit like this.
It's brevity is pretty well it's only redeeming feature.
Well it clearly goes against the grain on here but I didn't enjoy one moment of that. Musically it's nothing - calling it second rate hard rock is being kind. As for the lyrics, anyone who thinks yelling angry 6th form slogans & saying 'fuck' a lot is some sort of revolutionary insight into the ills of western capitalism needs to seriously grow up.
After reading the calibre of artists citing it as an influence, then listening to the opening track, which I enjoyed, I thought I was on something but I'm afraid it was a sharp decline after that & the 'like' button went undisturbed for the remainder of the album.
No idea why this is getting pelters from some folks on here. Album 754 & I've listened to literally hundreds worse than this.
Surprised I never heard of this band or album at the time. In it's day I think I'd have liked it & they'd probably be great livebut from this distance it was a bit 'meh' I'm afraid.
Excluding The Monkees who were proper musicians despite being a manufactured group jumping on a bandwagon - I guess at this time there must have been a dozen American Poundshop Beatles like these getting pushed by record companies eyeing an easy buck.
Anyone older than 15 who didn't give this a single star needs to have a serious think about themselves.
There's no question that he's a fabulous songwriter with a hugely impressive body of work but I can't help thinking he should stick to the one thing at which he truly excels because he's a mediocre singer at best & everything good on here has been performed far better by others
A previous reviewer called it the most over-rated album ever. Not unless 'The Wall' can be unwritten it ain't , but it's definitely a top 5 contender.
Goth rock is a new one on me. There's bits I liked but the production & lyrics are very '80's & haven't aged well. A very generous 3
Pound Shop Jacko with embarrassing lyrics. This sounds like a cash-in album cobbled together from discarded Jacko rehearsal tapes & I couldn't wait for it to end.
Seriously, what brain donor pays money or uses their precious time listening to shit like this.
One of the iconic albums of my '20's. There's always a concern when one of these crops up - & of course some stuff is iconic because it takes you back to a particular time or place rather than it's intrinsic musical merit. Pleased to say this one's held up very well.
I've just endured 'Yank Crime' & now this garbage. Seriously, list, give me a break
Really not my thing & the videos are pretty risible but more bearable than most of it's ilk.
There's a punky vibe that I liked & a couple of really nice tracks but I found her voice irritating at times. Worthy of another listen though & my 3 stars might be a tad harsh
A *third* album from Beastie Boys......? WTAF are you playing at, List. I have a pavement to jet wash so I'll listen to this at the same time. The jet washing will provide a better soundtrack & way more spiritual nourishment.
A hard one to score as it seemed to start poorly but it was definitely growing on me & I suspect it will improve on a second listen so my 3 stars might prove to be harsh.
Not the worst of it's genre & better than anything by Slipknot, Beastie Boys or any of the dozens of hip hop, rap & rooooaaaar garbage that infests this list.
I was pondering a very generous 2 stars. Then up came the penultimate track, which is almost certainly the worst version of 'I Heard it Through the Grapevine'; truly an abominable insult to either the original or Marvin Gaye's version. Debate settled. 1 star.
Enjoyed that a lot more than I expected to.
Not his greatest album but contains o9ne of his greatest songs, Marianne
I'd never heard of her & such a tragic life story but I'm afraid it's not an album I'll ever get in to
I've a strong feeling this will improve on a further listen.
GWF always jarred very badly & never tempted me to explore the rest of the album. Right decision.
I've been a massive Bowie fan from early days onwards but honestly there's nothing on this album that's worthy of his name apart from (perhaps fittingly) the final track, which just scrapes this an extremely generous 3 stars.
I enjoyed the final track so an otherwise dire album scrapes a 2.
Yes she's got a very decent voice, I like it a lot but I doubt it's any better than dozens of solid, professional session singers. No way does she get a recording contract if she's my sister & all other things being equal - and this album REALLY needs to lose the voiceover interludes. I haven't the heart to give it 1 star & consign it to the Atrocity Bin with all the rap, hip hop, roooooooaaar, & 'American rock group' shite but it absolutely is pisspoor I'm afraid.
Like others I enjoyed this more than I expected to.
Back in the day I doubt anyone imagined him turning into the rancid old crank he is now, but it's about the songs not the singer. So instead of getting wound up by The Man, relax & enjoy his lovely music.
Not as good as I remembered it being.
Nope. Still haven't the first clue why they're a highly rated band.
When I brought my first serious stereo in the late '70's Oxygene 4 was the go-to track all the salesmen used to show off their kit's prowess. Been off my radar for decades now so it's great to see the whole album holding up so well. A timeless masterpiece that needs to be listened to through top quality headphones to do it justice.
Swerved them 844 times but I suppose an album by the Dreadful Grate was inevitable eventually
A proper curate's egg of an album but some good tracks on it I'd listen again.
No
Note to self: do not groan when a band is described as an 'American rock group'. Ok there's been 100 or so on the list churning out the same racket but don't despair because just occasionally there is an album where the exception proves the rule. Exhibit A: 'Being There' by Wilco
The regular 'Morri reminder' that it's about the music not the musician!
It's been many a long day since I heard, or heard of, anything by Traffic! It's very much of it's time & I'm afraid even such great musicians as Jim Capaldi & Steve Winwood don't stop it dating badly.
Not their best album. The hits are brilliant but there's a lot of padding on that doesn't do it for me.
There's a lot of it some of which is a 'challenging listen' & a weird habit of the lyrics being the title repeated ad infinitum - albeit often in a very pleasant way. A tough one to rate, for all of the above there's several tracks that are absolute bangers.
This grew on me after a slow start but I rather doubt it did so sufficiently to be played it. I didn't know the history or details & have no dog in that fight but it does sound awfully like 'Tommy' ripped it off, doesn't it? PS the panning is highly irritating, lol....!
'American Pie' is what it is & his rendition of 'Vincent' can still move to tears all these years later.
No words of mine can get close to conveying how awful this puerile trash is.
A little-known fact is that the cake on the album cover was baked by Delia Smith, then a barely-known cookery writer on the short-lived Daily Mirror magazine who also prepared food for studio photography. Magnificent throughout, anyone who thinks this is a load of crud bookended by 2 classic tracks needs to have their head boiled.
He's such an interesting, influential & all-round good guy & you so want this to be good, but I'm afraid it's awful!!
Beany hats worn indoors or in warm weather. 'Nuff said.
It won't change the world but it brought pleasant relief after an hour of shite from Sonic Youth.
I don't see how this appeals to an audience beyond hardcore Beach Boy fans of which I was never one.
There's a track called 'Garbage Man'. A comma between the 2 words of it's title would enable it to serve as a description for the whole album.
Absolute horse shit
American Stadium Rock 101. No thanks.
It's very well produced but it's formulaic bubblegum pop
Possibly the best live album ever. Or possibly the second best after San Quentin
3 stars might be harsh the hits are fantastic but there ain't a lot else.
No idea how to rate this one!! There was the occasional passage I really liked but mostly my ears suffered considerable pain. But then it all seemed to come together in a mad, frantic, final track.
What a find!! Absolutely loved this. List, you have fully atoned for inflicting 4 albums of shit from the Beastie Boys on me.
Relegated very quickly to background noise & mostly an unpleasant intrusion on my evening
Such a sad story about the group as a whole, their legal problems & the struggles of Skip Spence.
An interesting one!! The first few tracks I'm thinking wtaf is this. Then towards the end I'm starting to like her voice - having initially found it quite alarming - it's becoming reminiscent of Florence & the Machine who I like & on a second listen it's starting to grow on me. I've given it 3 stars but I wonder if that will seem harsh in a few weeks time.
Dog shit
Some real horrors & a couple of tracks that were brilliant!
I'm tempted to describe this as comically bad but I'm suffering a serious humour deficit after an hour of my eardrums being assaulted by this risible garbage. I get that Metallica are on the list as they have a following but this is my 4th Metallica album ffs. One album as a nod to their work is more than enough - the retards who actually like this shit know where to find more of it & the rest of us don't need to have our lives further blighted.
Absolute, utter dog shit.
Any albun where every alternate word is "mutherfucka" is an immediate 1 star.
Some of the tracks are a bit hippy dippy & of their time but a couple have agent well. 4 stars might be a tad generous, but overall I enjoyed listening to this.
As brilliant as it was on the day it was released.
"Mr. Powers will be with you soon. Relax, have a cigarette & listen to some of his favourite songs to get you in the mood".
Not as bad as most of it's ilk but there's way too much of this crap on the list
Epic, especially 'Out of the Blue'....!
A pleasant listen rather than an outstanding one. She does have a absolutely fabulous voice though & part of me can't help thinking it's capable of so much more than 'pleasant'.
Glorious!!
There's some padding on the album & some decent 30 second riffs that have been painfully stretched into a whole track but 3 superb tracks (Sweet Dreams, Jennifer & Everything) is enough to squeak 4 stars
Some albums or groups have a resonance that goes beyond any musical merit they have (or lack!). Having missed most '90's & 00's music through being an busy old worker drone this is one of the delights I discovered after retiring. Whenever I hear anything by NoW it's 1am & I'm in a hotel room in Kampot, Cambodia, well-fed, fissed as a part & cigar in hand, stripped to my kellies & playing some of their recently discovered music on loop. Happy days!
Never heard of her before & I absolutely loved this. Brilliant discovery, thank you List.
Opens with a desecration of 'I Don't Want to Talk About It' & goes downhill from there. No idea what this is doing on the list.
Classic from back in the day!!
Well what an absolute banger of an album from a band I'd never heard of, & never would have without this list. I was 62 when this came out ffs!! & it's totally brilliant there's not a track on it that isn't 5 stars & I've already played it again.
Well that was a pleasant surprise some highly decent tracks that I totally wasn't expecting.
I've no idea what the lyrics are on about, lost the plot for that almost immediately & couldn't be arsed to look for it but large sections of the melodies are pleasant enough though 3 stars might be a tad generous. I doubt either that I'll ever listen to it again or feel that I'll reach my grave with a fulfillment I'd have lacked without hearing it but from the vantage point of being within 40 of the finishing tape I can most certainly state that the list has a good 200 albums worth of rap, hip hop, thrash, rooooooaaaar & formulaic 'American rock' shite that's far worse.
I enjoyed that after a slow start; the southern / blues elements just do enough to overcome the cliched rock parts & I suspect they'd be a great live band in a small club.
A proper curate's egg this one!!
2 stars for a very dated '60's album that I've not heard in many a long year & another for the incomparable Professor Unley Stanwin
I missed most music of the '00's when it happened but it was a thinner decade than I realised if this is one of it's stand out albums. There's some nice tuneage & at times I was feeling it'll improve on another listen but I really cba. I did find the vocals irritatingly weak & I'm astonished that a group with the resources & influence these guys had could settle for such poor production quality. After hovering between a 2 & 3 the latter has landed me on a 2
With such a magnificent voice Elvis would make singing the phone directory worth listening to but I find this album sad. Somehow - perhaps because it's from that era of his career - it reminds me of overweight saccharine Elvis churning out songs on autopilot for Vegas punters, his sublime talent being wasted as a money-harvest for the leeches who surrounded him & bilked him until there was nothing left.
A swinging sixties banger, loved this!!
Never loved prog rock even in its heyday when you weren't cool at school if you didn't & it's aged poorly.
Bland & a bit meh
It went as soon as The List informed me that my eardrums were to be abused to over an hour by this dogshit.
|Headphones on.
Not my thing at all but much better than most of its peers & I do admire their ethos.
WTAF on legs was that. Truly a dreadful, incoherent mess. Album 999 & definitely one of the 10 worst.
Whatever it's musical merits (& several tracks have plenty afaic, but that's just my subjective view) this was a very significant album on it's release which had a wide societal impact. Frankly it beggars belief that you removed this album from the list whilst retaining 4 albums of nondescript, formulaic dog shit from each of the Beastie Boys & Metallica.
I enjoyed the first side but it became tedious after that.
After multiple pauses it's taken me all day to make it to the end of this series of monotonous dirges. I haven't the heart to put such a beautiful voice into the 1 star bin with all the rap, hip hop, roooooaaaaar, 'American rock group', Beastie Boys & Slipknot shite, but my 2 stars feels extremely generous & not really deserved.
Ajoy to listen to this long forgotten gem after the best part of 4 decades. 'Rock Lobster' & 'Planet Claire' are just as brilliant as I remember them. How on earth could you remove this from the list whilst retaining 4 albums of dogshit from the Beastie Boys.
Not my thing but this rocks along very nicely; way more palatable than most of its peers. 3 stars if Tyler wasn't a seriously unsettling creep.
No.
Includes an additional star for pissing off the all the God 'n Guns evangelical nut jobs.
I know it's McCartney goofing around but I enjoyed.
Not for me thank you
Felt like I was listening to David Bowie on much of this album!! Which is a Good Thing
Oscar Wilde would struggle to find words to describe how bad this is.
A landmark album which contains several of their much-loved songs & had a massive societal impact when it was released. And you removed it from The List whilst retaining 4 albums of risible shit from the Beastie Boys & literally dozens of vile rap & hip hop drivel & the same number of identical, formulaic rooooaaaar & 'American rock' garbage. SHAME ON YOU
I enjoyed the first few tracks a lot more than I expected but the (inexplicably) much-lauded 'Farmer John' is awful & it goes into steep decline after that. Better to stick with the 50% of a good album they had than fill the rest of an hour with turgid dirges.
There's definitely a great voice hidden in there, be nice to hear it having a go at, you know, actual songs. The drumming is great; rhythm & melody keep threatening to break out. The ingredients of a great album are all there & it's shame they weren't used properly.
A band who were never quite on my radar, coming to prominence as work was reducing my music listening time. 4 stars may be a tad generous, there's some nice songs but it becomes bit samey.
'Itsari' & 'Canyon Jam' are very listenable & show what this could have been. But the rest is so completely dreadful that even taking these 2 tracks into account doesn't raise it above a single star.
If horse shit was an album
Was looking forward to hearing the Killing Moon for the first time in many a day but the live version included here was disappointingly weak.
Wasn't ever a fan. It's 'No' from me.
2 minutes in & & 2 motherfucka's within 15 seconds after at least 4 fucks already. And one of the highest rated reviews says the opening track is the only decent one. 1 star.
A staple of my youth that I've not listened to for decades!! You weren't cool at school if you didn't like this, I was one of the few in my circle that didn't own a copy but it was hard to avoid it everywhere else. Far from the worst example of prog rock & it hasn't aged as badly as most or as badly as I feared. 3's a tad generous but hey ho.
Absolutely beautiful, what a discovery. Thank you
Both stars are for 'Jump'. If anyone's in doubt that the rest of this album is embarrassingly juvenile parp there's a track speculating about what the new teacher will look like to set your expectation correctly.
Well, it's better than Trout Mask Replica!!
'Working Class Hero' deserves all the praise it gets but aside from I'm afraid I detect a strong aroma self-indulgence
Thought it'd improve on a second listen & glad I gave it one. Not quite 5 stars but a very strong 4 stars.
Excellent. When 4 stars feels a little harsh!
Not sure where the "fusing traditional sources like folk and country with other forms of popular music like gospel, soul, and psychedelic rock" part was. Just sounded like Good Ole Boy country & western to me.
Well I don't imagine that I'll be listening to it again any time soon but it was a long way from the horror that plenty of the reviews had me expecting. Album 1074 & I've heard a good 250+ hip hop, rap roooooaaaaarrrrr & 'American rock group' shite that's way worse than this.
WTAF
Not heard them from decades, but same old. Liked them back in the day & it still sounds good. Yay!
You took this off the list whilst retaining 4 albums of risible shite from The Beastie Boys. I have no words.
I was considering a very generous 3. Then came a concluding track who's lyric ends by repeating 14 times, a chorus of 'Calendar & Clocks & Hickory Docks (Tick Tock)'. I guess it's meant to be hypnotic - trust me, it ain't.
"Of it's time"....!!! Been a long while since I heard this, & hopefully it'll be a long while before I hear it again.
Of course there's no denying his talent but personally I'm not a particular fan of either jazz or - except for Johnny Cash inside prisons - live albums. But it's a 3 because: a) despite all the above there are parts I like b) I sure don't like them enough for a 4 but 2 is definitely harsh and c) I'm in a generous mood because after nearer 4 years than 3 on this journey I've finally reached album 1089 aka The Destination.
