Album Summary
Pieces of the Sky is the second studio album by American country music artist Emmylou Harris, released in February 1975 through Reprise. Although she had released the obscure folk-styled Gliding Bird five years earlier, Pieces of the Sky became the album that launched Harris's career and is widely considered to be her début. In those intervening years she forged a musical relationship with Gram Parsons that altered the musical direction of her career. The album includes Harris's first high-charting Billboard country hit, the #4 "If I Could Only Win Your Love," and the relatively low-charting #73 "Too Far Gone" (originally a 1967 hit for Tammy Wynette). The overall song selection was varied and showed early on how eclectic Harris's musical tastes were. In addition to her own "Boulder to Birmingham" (written for Gram Parsons, who had died the previous year), she included the Merle Haggard classic "The Bottle Let Me Down," The Beatles' "For No One," and Dolly Parton's "Coat of Many Colors." (Parton, in turn, covered "Boulder to Birmingham" on her 1976 album All I Can Do.) On Shel Silverstein's "Queen Of The Silver Dollar," Harris's longtime friend and vocal collaborator, Linda Ronstadt, sings harmony. Pieces of the Sky rose as far as the #7 spot on the Billboard country albums chart. Pieces of the Sky was included in Robert Dimery's 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Very Dolly Parton vibes, obviously. Thought it was pretty enjoyable, not dying to listen again
A peaceful listen with some nice covers.
3.6
Well, this was lovely, her voice so sweet but I had heard many of the covers before so would have liked to have heard her own work.
5/10
I appreciated the cover of Coat of Many Colors but Dolly's version is better. Emmylou is the first real bluegrass I feel like I've come across and that was nice because bluegrass definitely deserves a place on this list. Hope there is more.
Once again proving that female country is largely better than male country, or maybe just old country is better than current country.
#490 She no doubt has a great voice and I can appreciate to an extent but it’s not my bag, and grows a little tiresome. Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ❌ Listen before you die?❓ Fave track(s): Bottle Let Me Down Rating: 4/10 ⭐️⭐️
A perfectly fine listen. It’s a gentle and well performed album, with covers that do solid justice to their (superior) originals. Like most country though, that gentleness does make this a rather sleepy album, so it won’t stick in my mind especially.
This was a decent album, though I'm still not sure country is really my thing. Still, Harris' voice is great and there's a bit of stylistic variety on here as well, with some folkier elements in places. There's a good original song here in 'Boulder to Birmingham' a tribute to Gram Parsons, but the album is mostly covers, most notably of Dolly Parton's 'Coat of Many Colors' and the Beatle's underrated 'For No One'. In both cases though, I prefer the original.
A textbook 3-star album. Great central vocal performance from Emmylou Harris and a generally pleasant country sound on a mix of okay to fairly good tracks, but none that particularly blew me away either positively or negatively. That said, some of the better tracks included the vaguely bluegrass-sounding opener, the enjoyable vocal duet ‘If I Could Only Win Your Love’, the acoustic and steel guitar ballad ‘Boulder to Birmingham’ (the only original song), the catchy ‘The Bottle Let Me Down’, and the closing ‘Queen of the Silver Dollar’. There’s a decent Beatles cover too, although I certainly prefer the original.
Quite enjoyed the sweet high notes and generally easy Melodie's. The songwriting was a bit boring though
My introduction to Emmylou Harris was through Gram Parsons work and then again on the album she did with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt. While this was a nice album, I think I prefer her as a supportive harmonizer rather than as a lead singer. When she goes big with her voice and that bordering on excessive vibrato I keep thinking that I want her to reign it in a bit. She surprised me with her take on "For No One". Covering the Beatles can be dicey at best but I liked what she did with it.
Aint my thang
I ants to like it more than I actually liked it. Not that it was bad I was just hoping for really liking it.
Absolutely loved it. I'm not a country fan but the harmonies and the approach was absolutely beautiful.
I love Emmylou Harris’s voice, but this album is a bit too traditional country for my tastes. While I can't quite put my finger on how it differs from a Dolly Parton record, it just didn't connect with me, despite having seen her live and enjoying some of her later work. Still, it features great production and solid songwriting, earning a fair 3/5, just not my personal cup of tea.
Country twang
Good vocals, lowkey country
Great album
It's pretty good I guess but it's kinda generic. Best song: Coat of Many Colors Worst song: If I Could Only Win Your Love 5/10
I just don't like country. Even the best country just aint for me. So it aint you emmylou.
Great 😊 Three stars…
The great Emmylou Harris. Lovely to hear an early album by her.
Previously unknown. Lovely.
One of the best country albums I've heard to date. So good.
Slow and sappy old country. Not really my vibe.
"Too Far Gone" is amazing...a few other bangers. all in all pretty enjoyable. **Edit: Been listening to this album for a few days and it deserves at least a 4 rating.
First song gave me such promise of interesting country music with good vibes. Second song put me to sleep. It did eventually pick the pace back up a bit, but ultimately I was quite bored listening to it.
Lovely voice, but this is album is just so twee it's actually quite irritating. How people can regularly listen to this most-samey-of-all-genres I will never understand. Once you've heard one song you've heard them all. 1 star feels disrespectful to the singing (and some instrumental) talent, so I'll give it an extra star for those, but this isn't an album I'm going to be returning to.
While I am an Emmylou Harris fan (more Wrecking Ball and Red Dirt Girl than the heavy old school twangy country material), I am not exactly sure why this album warrants inclusion on this list. It is not particularly noteworthy or distinctive from many other old school female country artists. The music itself is fine for what it is, but not something I would urge people to listen to as a must hear.
++: Bluebird Wine, Too Far Gone, The Bottle Let Me Down, Sleepless Nights, For No One +: If I Could Only Win Your Love, Coat of Many Colors, Queen of the Silver Dollar +-: Boulder to Birmingham, Before Believing 7,9/10
Very cozy classic country album, even if it is mostly covers. Emmylou Harris can really convey all of the right emotions via her voice, whether it's an ode to her late friend or a tasteful rendition of Dolly Parton or the Beatles.
Emmylou has a great voice! I enjoyed her singing on the Trio album I already listened to on this list. All in all, this isn't my go-to style of music, but still enjoyed it.
The lady is talented but it's not my cup of tea.
Zzz 4.9999/10——>2/5
I like Emmylou Harris a lot. She has a great voice. I like the work she did with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt. She also has worked with Neil Young a lot. Of course, Emmylou has a great voice. The songs are more country than I thought they would be. Nine of the ten songs are cover songs. The album has sparse instrumentation. Beautiful covers like the Beatles’ For No One. This is a very good album. Four stars.
Very sweet, lovely old country, but seemed like a less personable version of Dolly Parton
This is why people think country is doll, not a doll.
HEAVEN ONLY KNOWS JUST WHY
Emmylou Harris has a lovely voice, but I just did not really like this album at all. Perhaps it's a blind spot for me, but true Country Music (as epitomisesd by this album) leaves me cold. I dutifully listened to it, but was truly grateful when it ended, and I'll not be letting it corrupt my Spotify algorithm...
I'm not the biggest country fan, but the combination of her gorgeous voice and well arranged songs almost made up for the boredom. But not quite. 2
Meh, country
I had no idea one of my favorite Throw Rag songs (Bottle let me down) was an Emmylou cover!
3.5/5
Red Dirt Girl was my 38th album. A real softball, 3 stars. I've been waiting two years for Emmylou to get a shot at redemption, because I'm not opposed to country music and she is a living legend. Unfortunately, this is just too limp, too slick and edgeless— can't do anything with it.
Beautiful voice. OK songs.
Heartfelt country with an endearing voice. As with most country records the arrangements are dull but the vocals makes up for that
pleasant enough, higher 3
Lovely little album. Never heard of her so had no idea what I was going into. Thoroughly enjoyed
I’m continuing to understand I dislike country. I also dislike the modern hybridization of pop and country.
Well, you really got me this time, and the hardest part is knowing I'll survive 4.4
I did not enjoy this. Especially the Beatles cover.
Second only to Linda Ronstadt when it comes to my favorite voice. A legend in country music who deserves to be more of a household name. Emmylou’s delicate and angelic voice never fails to take my breath away. This album is full of emotion. And the tribute she wrote for Gram Parsons is nothing short of beautiful and heartfelt. Top tracks: If I Could Only Win Your Love, Boulder to Birmingham, Sleepless Nights
She's got the classic country singing voice. Between her, Linda Ronstadt, and Dolly, they've really cornered the style. Especially when they work together in Trio. This a very pleasant country album. Her voice is great, the musicians are doing their thing beautifully, and it's kind of sad like most country music is for whatever reason. There are a lot of covers, which used to be more of a common place thing, and that kind of detracts from the album. You usually expect a cover to be more transformative, but her Coat of Many Colors is way too similar to Dolly's. All in all, it went down smooth. She's very talented and it's well produced.
I thought I didn’t like country music but I loved this. Questioning my life decisions right now.
Absolutely enamored with her voice. Just a warm hug of an album
Emmylou always delivers; no exception with this one
pleasant enough, she has a nice voice
Solid classic country but nothing too crazy memorable. She's got a great voice (albeit a bit grating sometimes but that's moreso the mixes fault) but beyond that I can't imagine why this is considered a must hear album. 3/5
Beautiful voice, and a great album. Rating: 7.5/10
It's so common on these country albums to do cover songs. It was a decent album though, highly talented artist.
#491/1001. It does sound like country music, doean't it? Had a second listen, skipped all but 3 songs.
Lovely. Occasionally a little slow.
i love a good '70s country queen
One of my all time favorite voices. So beautiful. 5
Dolly Parton at home
Hot take, Emmylou is better than Dolly.
This is real and beautiful country. The crap they make today is a travesty to country music and an embarrassment to musicians who came before them. The only reason this rating is this low is because a bunch of snooty Englishmen have their thumb up their butt while sipping their garbage water.

I was about to put sad dolly Parton and then she covers one of Dolly Parton songs about empowerment and made it sad. So. Sad dolly Parton. Pretty good though.
Loved it 4.3
this is just nice and cute? folk-country. very much of the time and it just works. i see why people loved the genre of those ages
Not for me
What a gorgeous voice! Sometimes the country music is a bit much, but it is all worth it to hear her vocals. 4/5
I actually quite liked it. She has a lovely voice and the tunes have a timeless quality to them. I was going to write how she gave me Dolly Parton vibes until she indeed included a Dolly cover here.
Beautiful vocals and overall a nice album. A bit more slow than I would've hoped for in the album, but it really is quite beautiful. Rating: 8/10 Favorite Song: Bluebird Wine
Not bad, reminds me of Dolly a little bit. I don’t rate country music but this was palatable
Man, classic country is so comforting lately. This album is down to Earth and talks of some very human and relatable problems, and the covers are great, but For No One was especially a beautiful rendition.
This sounded like classic country music which I’ve been waiting for. I liked her voice and when I listened to the first track I thought it was a potential new favourite but unfortunately it didn’t grip me for the whole time.
It's a solid album, but it's just not for me. A little bit too country.
Verrrrry pretty
Fav song: Bluebird Wine
Fun album. Felt a bit like Dolly.
I can definitely see myself coming back to this one. Low to mid 4 on two listens but it might climb.
Best Track - "Boulder To Birmingham"
Not the most exciting listen, but it’d be a disservice to rate it anything less for Harris’s gorgeous voice.
I really like this , nice covers
Well she has a great voice. Some of it is hard to get past the countryness of it all but you know what, I’ve heard a lot worse on here!
A pretty average country album with the Beatles cover the only real highlight.
Well it’s all quite listenable I guess. But given she didn’t write any of the material and the Dolly Parton cover isn’t as good as the original, it’s set itself some severe limitations on scoring potential.
Really good album
Not exactly my vibe but I did really enjoy it! 5/10
Favorite track(s): Bluebird Wine, Boulder to Birmingham, For No One, Queen of the Silver Dollar
fuck yeass.. ive been looking forward to more emmylou harris since we rolled red dirt girl. i mean i guess we had trio since then but given the timing she wasn't the main artist i was thinking about while i was listening, yknow.....? anyway. ill say up front that i did not enjoy this as much as red dirt girl. i did still like it a lot, as before i love her vocals, and every track is a great interpretation, especially "bluebird wine", "coat of many colors" and "california cotton fields". every single track is a banger performance. but thats kind of the thing im missing here i guess, is that it is just interpretations and performances of existing songs. on red dirt girl its (mostly) all her own songs and it just.... hits different. but given how i am maybe its just not hitting as hard cos the ebow hadn't been invented yet. who knows. honestly this could've probably been a 5 if the two had come up in the opposite order. but this came second and i just can't do it knowing red dirt girl exists. damn.....
26. septembar 2026. 1.11h no one: ja za (skoro) svaki country album ovdje: ne volim country ALI it's beautiful uvijek pokusavam da zamislim agresivno americke ljude kojima je neka od ovih pjesama omijena best: bluebird wine, sleepless nights
Happy, sad; happy, sad: good rhythm, lovely voice.
Pure Americana. Having listened to this I have a strange inclination to watch Smokey and the Bandit again. Emmylou Harris is the palatable side of Country music for me. I like what she does and it doesn't sound derivative (which I think a lot of it does). A solid 3/5 for me.
Country music just isn't my thing, but I do find it more tolerable when it's a female vocalist This was ok, and that's as enthusiastic as I can be
