Reviews (page 3 of 8)

Forgot to write a note for this, going to need a relisten.

Wonderful

Not much of a country fan, but I liked this. It's more like the old C&W that my dad listened to.

Beautiful set of pipes, felt like i was listening to dolly at times

Her voice is incredible. Not my style of country, but, for what it is, 4 stars.

Her voice is clear and sweet and raw.

Not really my genre but pleasant and nice to listen to

I’m a bit surprised how much I enjoy this. Harris has a great voice, and she’s a pretty interesting guitarist, too. That gives her a Midas Touch ability to mold anything to her “signature style.” That’s also what makes this (mostly) glorified covers album actually interesting. While I wouldn’t say any of these songs surpass their original versions, she brings her own personality to them, even while they remain largely the same compositionally. She is always a value-add on every track here; I never wish I could switch to the original, because I’m enjoying listening to Emmylou Harris’ version. Not that I adore every song here, though. There’s a handful of tracks that are so saturated with ‘70s country clichés, they feel as dusty, grimy, and kitsch as the old clown portrait hanging in your grandparent’s house. I wouldn’t call them unlistenable, but I wouldn’t say I’m engaged when they’re on. Even though it’s only 2ish songs, it’s just enough to hold me back from fully embracing Pieces of the Sky. But the more unfortunate issue is how desperately I want to actually hear original material from Emmylou Harris, and how little I’m given. I’m not going to say that “Boulder to Birmingham” is the best song on an album with covers of a A+-tier Parton song and an A-tier Lennon-McCartney song, but like….debatably??? Between the lyrics, the message about her feelings around her mentor Gram Parsons, and the fucking emotional power of it, there’s an argument to be made. It’s so good and showcases how wonderful Harris is as a songwriter, and yet, it stands alone here. Maybe that adds to its power, but I can’t help wondering whether this would be an even better record if it had more of her songwriting front-and-center. Looking through her general discography, though, it seems like she never gets that opportunity. And while I know that country is a covers-centric genre, there’s a small “what could’ve been” moment to be found if you imagine Harris with a Parton-esque career. In general, though, Pieces of the Sky threads the folk-country needle with finesse and is a pleasant listen by a very talented musician. Its biggest fault is that it leaves me wanting more, which may be a feature, not a fault. So now I guess I’m going to have to check out Wrecking Ball after all these years.

Chill country vibes

I love her voice and the arrangements were simple but perfect. I like this kind of country, fun selection of covers as well

first listen they just don't make country like the 70s anymore

This is a go to album for sitting out in the yard sipping a cold drink on a breezy spring day. Love it

Just about 10 albums ago I had Dolly's Coat Of Many Colors, and now I get to hear another iconic female country artist cover the incredible title track. I understand these songs are mostly covers though I only recognized one other, The Beatles' For No None. She approaches that song with such delicacy and forlorn weariness. And she wrote one hell of a song for her late mentor, Gram Parsons. Boulder to Burmingham is heartbreaking. Whether singing her own songs or someone else's, her voice is always lovely and so emotive. This has been a fantastic introduction to Emmylou; I quite like this album.

Much better than the other Emmylou Harris album.

This album was great. A solid 4.5/5.

The Good: We are given pieces of the sky! The Bad: Sometimes, the sky, is vast and even a piece is too much… The Ugly: When one starts choking on the pieces… To think that I worked for a company which made a signature guitar for this lady, and I never did bother listening to any of her music… So, now I have. And I can state that, though her voice is purdy to say the least, it is too much honk-ee-tonk for me. Should one have a little party, this could serve more than ample as background music though… So, straight down the middle, as I don’t want to pull the lady down. 3* Edited… all of a sudden Boulder to Birmingham starts playing… damnit. 4*

Very nice

Its a point that I have made numerous times during this project, but real country music is awesome. The instruments and energy are incredible and you throw a great voice like this and you have me tapping my sole. Really good stuff. I don't know exactly when I would listen to this again, but I would be perfectly happy to do so.

Beautiful country album as someone who's not typically big on country as a genre

Ugh where do I begin, incredible voice and incredible songwriting through and through. This is my first into to emmylou and I’m so excited to jump into more of her. I also feel like the songs in this album sound more modern than the 70s.

Voice of an angel

Just some classy country. Sounds like Dolly.

Liked this alot more than I thought. I'm excited to put it on on a few months again when it's warm out to do some yard work and have some lemonade

Quite liked 'Bottle Let Me Down' and 'Queen of the Silver Dollar'. Guess I like drinkin’ songs.

Favorite tracks: If I Could Only Win Your Love, Before Believing, For No One. This was so easy to listen to. Really enjoyed it. Good choice of covers, too. 4 stars.

This gal sounds like Stevie Nicks. I like Stevie Nicks. Therefore, I like this gal. Her vocal is clear, precise, and expressive, with just the perfect amount of country twang to let the listener know they're in for a classic all-American adventure. The slow, contemplative cover of the Beatles' For No One is excellent, nearly rivalling the original. I enjoy the use of strings to both separate itself from the Beatles' version and to keep with the lamenting orchestral theme that the Fab Four originally captured using a French horn. The opening track, Bluebird Wine, is another standout. Its high energy makes for a solid way to begin the album. I also like the thick, dramatic texturing done on Boulder to Birmingham with its shimmery combination of piano and drums added to several layered/harmonising vocals. Another cover on this album is Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors, which (coincidentally) is the title track of the album I listened to yesterday. This puts Pieces Of The Sky in an unfortunate position, Parton's version of the title track is better, though this version is fine too. Comparing Pieces Of The Sky (and other similar albums) against modern-day "country" records, there's a stark contrast. Sure, Cowboy Carter, Deeper Well, and The Tortured Poets Department are all passable, but there's so much less musicality, heart, and soul in them than in 20th-century releases like this one. I can't help but agree wholeheartedly with the top-rated review: "I’m beginning to realize I don’t dislike country. I dislike the modern hybridizations of pop and country." (Preach, man.) 4/5 Key tracks: Bluebird Wine, Boulder to Birmingham, For No One

Det är Emmylou Harris, det är stämsång, det är fiol och pedalsteel-gitarr, det är bra. THIS IS COUNTRY MUSIC! 4 av 5

Americana country rock, her voice is pleasing, and many songs sounded familiar before I realised there are like 3 covers in this. I liked the fast-paced songs more, but overall was enjoyable. Stand-out: Bluebird Wine

Wonderful songs and of course an amazing voice. I think Willie Nelson said “you’re either in love with Emmylou Harris or you’ve never met her.”

great voice

I am not a country fan at all, but I loved this album. Emmylou Harris's voice is FANTASTIC. This album sounded great and had some very enjoyable songs. Her covers of "Coat of Many Colors" by Dolly Parton was awesome and made sense since both are country singers. Her covering "For No One" by THE BEATLES (One of my favorite Beatles songs at that) was awesome and such a shock Liked Songs: "Bluebird Wine" , "Too Far Gone" , "Boulder to Birmingham" , "Bottle Let Me Down" , "Sleepless Nights" , "Coat of Many Colors" , "For No One"

A very strong album, front-to-back, with some beautiful and incredibly powerful moments. "Boulder to Birmingham" is simply one of the greatest songs ever written.

This is classic country and has a fair bit of covers as old country tends to have, but Harris has a great voice. This is very early in her career, but you can see why she became a star. I’ve had one other album by her, but was from the twilight of her career and left me wondering why such an album would be included, so I was very pleased by her debut outing.

i just kinda enjoyed it a lot, even tho i dont really care that much for the genre, gave me real fallout NV vibes not sure it is particularly significant tho MYM

This is a pretty good album. Nothing overly impressive, but it’s great if you’re into old-school traditional country with a folk edge. It’s easy to appreciate for its simplicity and authenticity.

That voice!

Beautiful classic country, reminds me of home.

An enjoyable listen. She has a great voice. Particularly liked the task Before Believing which the album title come from.

Only familiar with Emmylou Harris due to her connections with Gram Parsons and her featuring on Dylan's, 'Desire'. Not heard much of her solo stuff and quite pleased that this has turned up. Despite there being a few covers on this album, Dolly Parton and Beatles, I like the vibe. It hangs together well and the covers blend in really well. Stand out track for me is, Too Far Gone. 4 stars.

I absolutely love Emmylou's early albums; her voice is nearly intoxicating. The only complaint I have is that some of the ballads can be a bit too maudlin

Tender and quiet and sweet.

Liked this a lot, proper artistry in writing and performance. The covers are great and bring an original take and Emmylous voice and playing is just beautiful.

I’ve been transformed into a young farmer’s daughter who’s grown unhappy with her small town and longs for bigger things out of life. Seriously though, what ever happened to THIS Country (music…but also…)? When did the target audience grow tired of seeping melodies over heartbreaking lyrics and lush production in favor of “BBQ stains on my t shirt?”

Harris bridges traditional country and folk-rock sensibilities, her crystalline voice illuminating both classic covers and original gems with haunting grace.

Emmylou’s voice is pure and her phrasing is perfection. The song choices on Pieces of the Sky are not for me, but the album is excellent. Not only is she one of the best in country music, she’s as intelligent as she is beautiful. Her later work is some of her best.

The first song caught my attention, so far so good. Will listen to the rest later today. I liked the album!

Pretty good, nice voice too

Really liked this one a lot. I will be saving it and listening to it again in the future.

Excelente

The early records are closer straight-up country and work very well in that realm. Her voice was stronger and clearer at this time and just about prettier than anyone else. And she wasnt so inclined to the brittle-wavery sounds of the later (and slightly overproduced and oversung) records. This is more pristine and free-range sounding and its good thing the voice is so good because there's not a ton else going on here. "Sweet Old World" (by Emmylou's near double Lucinda Williams) is an all-time bittersweet song, appropriate for deathbed listening or in any moment where music's unique ability to provide solace needs to be called upon.

Straight up Country Americana with the sonorous voice of Emmylou - what’s not to like?

Nettes, abwechslungsreiches Folk Album….7/10

Beautiful singing and feels very authentic. Almost hard to give notes. It's a great country album. Listen to it. Appreciate what it is doing and understand that world some more.

She obviously has an amazing voice and vocal choices. She made every song her own. I did not care for the male vocalists that popped up on a couple of the tracks. A very listenable album that showcases country music nicely.

Classic country. I had originally thought "Too Far Gone" would be the Neil Young song, not the Tammy Wynette one. I enjoyed her cover of "For No One," I thought it was an interesting song to pick. "Coat Of Many Colors" was good, but I do not think it added anything to the Parton original. No Eagles pun, but listening to the album gave me a peaceful, easy feeling. It felt very stripped down, and I appreciated it a lot. Top songs: "For No One," "The Bottle Let Me Down," "Boulder To Birmingham"

God, she's amazing. She gives a masterclass in vocal emotion.

I really liked this. I can hear the influence such as for someone like Helena Deland. I did get fatigued by the end though…

Great voice and delivery. Decent material.

Such lovely melodies - and that Beatles re-make of For No One needs a warning for the emotionally-sensitive. Wowsers. Bonus star for a Shel Silverstein song credit. This album surprised me.

Pretty good

Where this excels as opposed to other country and western albums is that it explores the genre rather than fitting its niche. Emmylou has an exquisite voice, like other female country artists, but she really leans into the production value in this record and takes you to high peaks and sad lows. It’s beautiful and extravagant.

I was amazed at the vocals. Harmonized right through the key changes. Incredible voice.

Lovely country music. She is an absolutely delight on this.

Emmylou Harris has the voice of an angel - very similar to Dolly. I wonder if that's why Emmylou has managed to be more of an 'underground' country artist, in a sense. Interesting arrangement of covers and originals - no doubt a sensible choice for a major label debut album, but for me it holds the album at a 4/5 instead of a 5/5.

Probably like top 10 country singers of all-time

Hard to decide between 3 and 4 stars but Emmylou's voice gets it to 4 stars or B- for me.

I've never been a fan of country music, so I haven't heard a lot of Emmylou Harris probably because of my stubborn bias against the music, in principle. What I've heard on this list from Emmylou has me reconsidering my stance and have become a fan based on her albums, songs and that amazing voice of hers. Her early records, along with her work with Gram Parsons is worth a listen and the eclectic nature of the songs aren't just pigeon-holed into the "country" category. I feel I've missed out, so I'll be indulging her catalogue and enjoying music that is essential for a reason.

4☆/5 08.27.2024

Another great example of "this is why we're doing this project" - I of course know who Emmylou Harris is but had never really listened to her. This is gorgeous and while I'm not always going to be in a country mood it's just beautiful music - and not just her voice; the entire recording has space and evokes the right feeling. Generally not a covers fan but probably since I didn't know most of these songs they hit right - and I must admit I do love the Beatles' cover. Highly recommended even (especially?) for those of us who never grew up with much country music. 8/10 4 stars.

liked it, great classic sound and really great harmonies ona. few songs

If there's one music style that this app taught me to better appreciate, it's seventies country, more of the "progressive" ilk (or, alternatively, the "outlaw", "honky tonk" one). Emmylou Harris' *Pieces Of The Sky* is a rather wonderful album, for instance, more in the vein of the crossover mainstream success experienced by the likes of Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton. "Bluebird Wine" is a great, lively bluegrass opener. "Boulder To Birmingham", co-written by Bill Danoff and Harris herself, is a very touching tribute to her late mentor Gram Parsons, with a killer tears-inducing chorus, and with a great guitar hook during said chorus. "Before Believing" is a delicate acoustic cut that hits all the right elegiac spots, and once again the guitar arrangement on it is stellar. Apart from that, it's fun to hear Emmylou sing Merle Haggard's "The Bottle Let Me Down" and rather moving to witness her perform Dolly Parton's "Coat Of Many Colors". "Sleepless Night" has the most wonderful chord changes, proving that C&W can be inspiring when it goes away from the same stale harmonic progressions it's often associated to. Finally, "For No One" offers a nice version of the Beatles' deep cut from *Revolver*, and "Queen of the Silver Dollar" is a truly epic closer, written by Shel Silverstein--who also penned, o surprise, Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue", another memorable tune which is yet miles away from that very emotional song here. It's honestly mind-boggling that Harris rarely felt confident enough to write songs herself. As "Boulder To Birmingham", but also far later LP *Red Dirt Girl*--in this list as well--proves, she was a more-than-decent songwriter. It's always a little disconcerting when 90-95% of an album is made out of covers. But Emmylou's subtle mastery for her vocal performances, so rich and sweet-sounding and perfectly attuned to the music, makes the album a gem nonetheless (just like Linda Ronstadt's *Heart Like A Wheel*, out the year before--to take an example of another important record released by a female country singer who didn't write her own songs at the time). Besides, and as suggested before, the musical arrangements, whether on guitar or for the strings sections, are pitch-perfect, especially for the end of the tracks. When the latter fade away you kind of wish they could go on a little more. Always a sure sign that the music is damn good. So this album is a keeper, I guess. 4/5 for the purposes of this list of "essential" albums. 9/10 for more general purposes (5+4) Number of albums left to review: 93 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 391 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 228 Albums from the list I certainly won't include in mine: 288

I forgot this existed for like a day there. Sidenote I stopped adding to my 1001 playlist in April so playing catch up rn, I hate how I don't process songs individually when I listen to albums bc they kind of mush together and then I dont realize how much I like them and I dont add them to my liked songs. ab this album-- I like it. Not that any of this is super loud wild crazy but I really enjoy the more mellow songs. 7.5/10

Sounds better than early Dolly Parton.

Love this. Back when country music was good

The voice of an angel…

A terrific debut album from Harris. Not a bad song on here. Some slower ones that I won’t listen to often but I’d definitely return to this.

A heartbroken album, with the sadness amplified by Harris’ voice sounding like it might break at any moment, a la Tammy Wynette. Just like Wynette, though, there’s a lot of power in that vulnerability, and the album as a whole exists in that power too. A little dirge-y at times, but really emotional and effective. Best song: Boulder to Birmingham

One of my favorite voices of all time. I wish the songs were a bit stronger but I could see myself revisiting this from time to time.

As far as country albums go for me, this was alright. I have one main gripe, but let’s talk about more general things first. Harris’s voice is incredible. The amount of control she has to his these intricate melodies and vocals flourishes (though they’re few) is masterful, and the amount of emotion she can convey in her voice enhances everything. There is no doubting her talent, or that she surrounded held with an excellent group of talented musicians to create an album that shines in its production and technical quality of music. To my main gripe - it was mostly boring. Beautiful. But boring. My gripe isn’t that, so much as that it starts with the best track on the album in “Bluebird Wine.” That’s an absolute banger and I could listen to it ten times in a row. Her voice really shines here, and it’s just a fun upbeat country tune that really got me excited. My head perked up when it started. And it made me feel like I was in for a party of a country album. And that’s the problem - that’s not what this is. It is not a party. It’s mostly a ballad fest. Rarely does the energy pick back up after the first track, and never does it match it. I would kill for an album by her that had peaks and valleys in terms of mood and energy and not just an immediate peak followed by a huge valley. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some ballads. But an album full of them, after an opener that isn’t a ballad? Come on. I feel like an opener is supposed to set the tone and mood for an album, to establish a vibe. So when an opener is drastically different from the rest of the album, I feel like I’ve been falsely advertised to. Anyway. I actually did enjoy the album, despite what I’ve said. I just wanted more variety in the energy of the songs. I know country is known for its ballads but clearly she had it in her to crank it up if she wanted to. But I try to appraise an album based on what it is, not what it isn’t. So what’s here gets four stars. Her voice alone gets three. Everything else is enough to earn four stars. She’s definitely someone I’ll checkout outside of this project. Oh and I appreciated her cover of the Beatles “For No One,” I just wish it wasn’t so schmaltzy. A lot of the ballads are schmaltzy and I just didn’t need that. Standout Tracks: Bluebird Wine, Before Believing, Bottle Let Me Down, Queen of the Silver Dollar, California Cotton Fields

Lots of feelings here. LOTS. It's good. Even if country isn't my thing. It might be if modern country wasn't the pop wannabe shit show it is today. This has a lot going for it.

Will listen on vinyl

Soulful and sweet, beautiful vocals and older country that is wonderful and heartfelt. Really enjoyed this album as a Kacey Musgraves fan

I’m starting to think there might be a reason all the country music on this list has been from the 80’s or earlier so far

I love her voice. It's clear and full of feeling but never shrill or overwrought. I was moved by quite a bit of 'Red Dirt Girl', so I'm glad to hear a much earlier album by Harris. 'Pieces Of The Sky' is more concise and the production is clearer, so I have to say I prefer it. The guitars sound beautiful, worthy of Harris' singing. If you're not a fan of the genre, I don't think there's anything here that will change your mind. Thankfully I am a fan of the genre, and I think this album kicks ass. "I told you summer stories/but outside it's getting mighty cold." Highlights: Bluebird Wine, Boulder to Birmingham, Before Believing, Bottle Let Me Down, Coat of Many Colors (I was delighted to hear this Parton song again), Queen of the Silver Dollar

Super sweet and lovely country trilling. Appreciated this today.

Beautiful voice and the covers are well made.

Bluebird Wine alone makes this good. AN old school good country album.

That was beautiful. Though this is not a style of music that I am fond of, I loved how she expanded the scope of all the material she chose for this. And that voice...

I like it.

The album is very good especially for a first solo. It's worth to take a listen to some of Gram Parsons albums, they've got a similar tone and Emmylou is greatly featured on his albums.

Pretty nice album :) definitely good vibes

I actually liked this more than I expected to. The songs sound fresh; they paint a vivid picture despite following many of the tropes. The great storytelling and beautiful vocals make the bendy country guitars sound pleasant instead of tired and annoying.

Emmylou Harris is somehow an underrated country legend. When it's all said and done, she'll forever be on the Mount Rushmore of female country artists, along with Loretta Lynne, Tammy Wynette, and Dolly Parton. None of those country legends have a voice like Emmylou Harris.

This is my second Emmylou Harris solo album to review. I loved Red Dirt Girl, so I have really high hopes heading into this album. Like Red Dirt Girl, this album is an excellent showcase of Emmylou Harris's voice. Each song is a great example of her beautiful voice, and she pours raw emotion into every ounce of her singing. There's also some solid work from other musicians that helps solidify this album's sad and sombre tone. "Boulder to Birmingham," Harris's sole writing contribution to the album is beautiful, yet devastating. Having lost her mentor and collaborator Gram Parsons could have easily crushed Harris's career, but she carried, despite the sadness brought on by Parsons's passing. Her rendition of "The Bottle Let Me Down" is an interesting inclusion on this album, especially considering how Parsons passed away, but it's unique to hear a song like this sung from the perspective of a female, and Harris's soft tone provides vulnerability to the demons of alcoholism. Overall, this is a beautiful album. I do wish this album had more songs written by Harris, but it's a solid collection of songs that express heartbreak and grief, with the exception of her rendition of Dolly Parton's "Coat of Many Colors," which I found to be an unnecessary inclusion. Still, reviewing this album has given me more appreciation for Emmylou Harris's work.

I have always thought Emmylou had a great voice. This is classic country and was a positive change from yesterday.

I liked it, but my takeaway was even as a person born post 2000 why did country music slowly tear itself apart rather than being original which can work

She’s got a great voice. I loved the storytelling and the way she sang them. I know almost all of them weren’t written by her but I really don’t have a problem with that, there’s nothing wrong with acknowledging somebody else’s song as really good and you wanting to sing it. That’s some pretty big kudos to that artist. Thought she sounded great this was a nice listen.

Loved the variety-some guitar & some piano focused tracks. Not my normal genre but she has a great voice & can tell a story

melodious

This kind of stuff usually isn’t my jam. She has a beautiful voice but I wasn’t super into the music, and I was debating on whether to give this 3 or 4 stars based on the strength of her voice. Then the “For No One” cover came on. Absolutely moved me, and my decision was made.

A beautiful album. Nice to have a bit of country in my ears. The best country artists are such wonderful storytellers, it deserves a re-listen.

good sad tunes, cheery tunes, plinky plonky numbers. what a voice

really pretty and hadn’t heard this album

Following up on her ride with the immortal Gram Parsons Emmylou Harris carves out her own path in an ever-changing Country genre yet keeps on doing exactly what she's done on this album through current times. 4.5/5

4.2 - Sweet and true as a goodnight kiss on the forehead.

Not my fav genre, but this was very good

From the first phrase it is clear why so Emmylou Harris is held in such high regard. I'm not sure why I so roundly rejected country music in my youth. The pathos and longing would have been lost on me in 1975, but her voice is also undeniably beautiful. I must admit through this project I've been warming up to old timey country. Still not my fave, but I can now at least enjoy it. I have no idea if this album should be on this list, but I don't mind that it is, and I'm quite sure the artist should be.

Laidback country muziek, met een fijne stem, niks mis mee.

Favorites were "Coat of Many Colors" (from Dolly) and "Queen of the Silver Dollar"

The voice of an angel

wish it had a couple more upbeat songs but a really good album nonetheless

Normally, this isn’t my type of jam, but the guitar, along with her singing was just too harmonious to ignore and I ended up really liking it. 8/10

Definitely a 3 if not a 4

Nothing to dislike here

This is the kind of music my dad listens to. And as I grow older I can absolutely understand him. This is really good! I wouldn't be able listening to too much of it but this is a great album. Definitely on the slower and softer side but always worth a listen.

One of the all time great voices.

Favorite Tracks: Boulder to Birmingham Bluebird Wine Queen of the Silver Dollar

I really enjoyed this album despite it being more country-sounding than I typically go for. There were some very catchy songs, and Harris has a beautiful voice.

Incredible voice and some great songs. A bit by the numbers for me musically sometimes, but room to rise in my estimations. 3.5/5

Very strong country album. She has a great voice and rounded up an amazing band. The musicality and harmonies are off the charts! Standout tracks: Bluebird Wine, Too Far Gone, If I Could Only Win Your Love, Boulder To Birmingham, Bottle Let Me Down, Sleepless Nights, Coat Of Many Colors, For No One 8,5 out of 10

Made for good house spa time. Sounds a bit like dolly parton. Good vibes. Pleasantly surprised.

8.5/10

Emmylou Harris is on the Mount Rushmore of Female Country Artists with Dolly, Patsy and Loretta. Done.

I know she’s one of the greats but I never really enjoyed any of her music, until this. Maybe I was just looking at the wrong era.

Same Kate. Unexpected. Delightful. Maybe just needed a vibe change.

Not a country fan but can't deny it's a solid album

A beautiful listen. Emmylou is one of the greats, with a voice like silk. Although most of these songs are covers, she's a wonderful interpreter of music. While far from revolutionary, there are far worse ways to spend 40 mins. Would that country music still sounded like this today.

Such a beautiful voice. I’m not a fan of todays country music, but this reminded me country music once was something special and I found myself really enjoying this album but especially her voice.

Eclectic mix of country, folk & ballads, wound together by her wonderful and unique voice. Very mature delivery. Beautiful rendition of "For No One" 3.5/5

4/5. I loved the country undertone of this album. Emmylou’s voice fits that sound perfectly and I enjoyed about 80% of the album.

New album and artist for me in a genre that I hadn’t gotten anything from so far in the project! This album was like a breath of fresh air. Her voice is fantastic and it’s that old school country sound that is just so easy to love.

Very nice, would have loved if more was like bluebird wine but was a really pleasant listen.

Good Country rock

A nice and pleasant record. However, I feel that if you are going to do a cover song, you need to make it your own and change it up from the original.

I've always liked Emmylou and wanted to listen to more of her stuff, so I was glad to see her pop up! I have such a soft spot for this kind of old school country. 4

oikei mukavaa kuunneltavaa! good vibes ja ihana ääni ja niiku mukavainen junamatkamusa ! :)

Good, classic country

This the good country. If I tell people I like country this is what I mean

Cute country

A very beautiful album from and amazing artist. Many favorites, really the whole damn album is great.

This album made me love country

Country animado. Está bien. Un 4.

relaxing listen

Intiimi ja hiano. Kyl kelppa, nii!

Quiet, soulful and introspective. definitely suited for a particular mood, but the vocals are great throughout

A lovely album. Her voice is captivating

Very much enjoyed. But then I am a country girl at heart.

If this process has taught me anything it's that I like country. Would listen again.

More like it. A little bit of country. Will need to listen to this again in the summer while sitting out in the garden.

I've never heard of her, and didn't know what to expect, but I think I love this 4/5

Excellent example of why I love this project. Emmylou Harris is certainly a name I know and a musician who paved the way for so many female artists. I learned that Graham Parsons "discovered" her. Interesting! I loved this so much. Her covers really shined and Queen of the Silver Dollar (lyrics by Shel Silverstein!) took me back to childhood riding in my dad's gold VW Beetle.

Great one. Beautiful voice.

I liked it

It was a good album, and Harris's voice is amazing. Some tracks sounded a bit similar, but the problem became less prevalent in the second half.

Good old sweet country! Pas ma came, mais très sympa

Very nice vocal styling and songwriting, a nice Beatles cover thrown in. Nice morning music.

What a beautiful cover album, except for that one she co-wrote. Her versions were mostly original, but not all were necessary. I enjoyed the album, but I can’t shake the feeling that she could do better if there was more of her own music in the mix because she has such a unique sound. Her own songs could only enhance her style. 4/5

Not something I’d listen to normally. There’s definitely no filler on this album, it’s a very good 70s country album; Strings work well with great a country voice.

After this album I'm convinced Emmylou is on par with Dolly. Now to paint my pickup truck white and driver on until I meet Jesus himself.

Enjoyed this a lot. Hadn’t listened to her before!

The first half was much better than the second, but it was still really good. Not the biggest fan of country but was pleasantly surprised.

I always thought Emmylou was one of those musicians loved by her peers but ignored by the record buying public. It’s nice to learn that she also sold some albums. Her voice is majestic. It’s so good that she can cover well known songs that are high risk to cover. One example is For No One which she sings brilliantly at a much slower tempo. This was a risky one to cover since it’s well known and Paul sang the original beautifully. I would normally draw a negative inference from their being only one original but the one is a wonderful song about a drunken angel and her feelings of love and, I think, guilt.

As the critics say, Emmylou is “blessed with a crystalline voice” and she was definitely in her prime in 1975. I prefer this to the 2000 release we were sent earlier, which I felt was over produced. Here, the production is great, by Brian Ahern, apparently Canadian, who has produced everyone from George Jones to Anne Murray. Anyway, he gives the album a nice acoustic country feel, as does the song selection.

Great folk, and great voice.

Beautiful old school country voice. 4.5

oddly good i really like this

Very enjoyable country album with a lot of feeling.

Excellent Emmylou Harris album, timeless. 8/10

Some carefully selected covers and a lovely voice: can only lead to a great album.

This was great. It’s a great mix of varied covers and obviously, Harris’ voice is incredible. I loved these versions of Coat of Many Colors and For No One.

It feels appropriate for Pieces of the Sky to be Emmylou Harris' proper debut, for it allows the emergent singer-songwriter to fully capture everything she had learned and weaved into a complete package. From dedicated commitments of heartwrenching tales to fully reimagined songs from past and then-present contemporaries, this album is a great start for someone to dip into Emmylou's vast discography. Favorites: Bluebird Wine, Boulder to Birmingham, Before Believing, Bottle Let Me Down, Coat of Many Colors, For No One, California Cotton Fields.

A really nice smooth country/Americana album. I generally dislike country because it has been commercialised so much but this is still original from the mid-1970s.

I had never heard of Emmylou Harris before, and I was very pleasantly surprised. What a voice! I could listen to her sing a shopping list. In researching her I have seen that she is known for mostly covering other songs, rather than writing her own (though she did that as well). Well, in my view, Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley did the same and the music industry still considers them legends. I’m not usually fond of most country music, but I was very impressed by this record, and I think that says a lot as to Emmylou’s talent. Fav track: Boulder to Birmingham Least fav track: Queen of the Silver Dollar

I liked it more than I expected. I remember rating her 2000 album quite low, but I don’t recall why

It's hard not to compare Emmylou to Dolly Parton. They have a similar vocal style, play in the same genre, and literally sing each other's songs. This is not a fair comparison for Emmylou, because Dolly wins it every single time. But I think that says more about Dolly (and me) than it does about Emmylou. On her own, she's pretty great! A lot of these songs are enjoyable, especially the ones where she talks about BEING DRUNK. Hell yeah, Emmylou, tie one on with me.

70s country holds its head up pretty well compared to what followed in the 80s

Surprisingly good end to end - well paced - great covers - great songs and musicianship - and Emmylou has a wonderful voice.

7/10 It was alright.

Favorites: -Bluebird Wine -If I Could Only Win Your Love -The Bottle Let Me Down -Queen of the Silver Dollar

7/10. Good country album.

I'm here for this song Bluebird Wine. It's kind of amazing that this is an album of almost all covers, but it's counted as a debut. Tonight The Bottle Let Me Down is a fun one. Queen Of The Silver Dollar is solid. The bonus tracks are killer.

This is the kind of country that I can get into. What a beautiful voice

Great country album

Emmylou Harris...still alive. A couple of nice covers mixed in with a few classics and a few sleepy songs.

They've really been into my grandma's kitchen radio music lately. This one's pretty good.

Gorgeous voice

The first song is fantastic. Amazing voice.

I wish I was in the right physical environment to accurately accompany this style of music. I can just imagine myself bailing hay all day while listening to stuff like this. Not something I would listen to consistently, but in the right setting this hits. Her voice is just so Godly. I like Track 2: Too Far Gone and Track 6: Bottle Let Me Down the most.

I'm only 30 seconds into this album, and I can already tell its banger. It's the best kind of country music. Her voice is absolutely incredible, the way it slides over notes is gracious, while also being consistently dynamic. The instrumentation is upbeat, and rather immense for a country album. Just looking at the credits on Wikipedia, over 20 people worked on the album which seems odd for a country album. The effort was well worth it because the result is consistently amazing and heartfelt. My only complaint is that this is more of a sad cowboy album where I much prefer to yeehaw. Highlights: 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Enjoyed

I've enjoyed quite a bit of her music and seen her play live a couple times. She is an excellent and wide-ranging writer and performer. Amazing voice and fantastic musician. For some reason, I had not heard this album before, and it's great to hear her creative artistry at even this early stage in her career. So cool.

I may have misjudged country music all these years, because there are some real classics to be found within the genre. This is very pleasant listening, like listening to your grandmother tell stories about her younger years or when she fell in love. Musically, it's similar to ladies like Carole King or Dolly Parton - which should be enough to give an idea of how good the record is. Lots of standout tracks here too, like Boulder to Birmingham and Bottle Let Me Down.

This was enjoyable. She has a beautiful voice.

Surprisingly (for me) and refreshingly good. Not my genre so… wow!

Flott rödd, fínt country, aldrei aulahrollur. Gæti mjög vel hlustað aftur.

I really enjoyed this. It was quite quaint. A pretty good string of albums I’ve been going through recently.

irrrraa

8/10 really good but it sounded exactly like Dolly Parton to me and I literally couldn’t tell the difference still, really liked it for the most part

It's always a pleasure to listen to Emmylou Harris' sweet, angelic voice. This album is a really nice collection that highlights her versatility and never ceases to be charming. The elegantly heart-rending "Boulder to Birmingham" is the obvious star track of the album. But Harris also shines on the covers, including an unexpectedly gorgeous, expressive rendition of "For No One." Fave Songs: Boulder to Birmingham, For No One, Before Believing, The Bottle Let Me Down, Too Far Gone, If I Could Only Win Your Love

Smooth as silk. Boulder to Birmingham is a stunner of a song.

With a voice clear as a bell, Emmylou Harris brings her own gentle touch to a well-curated group of covers and originals. Those who normally disdain other artists attempting Beatles tunes may be pleasantly surprised at her melancholic rendition of “For No One.”

Love her voice & her music. Great album.

Really beautiful

Such a pure voice. Interesting mix of tracks, mostly covers. Some misses but mostly hits. I appreciate the cover of Beatles’ “For No One” which for me has the saddest lyrics to any Beatles song - Enmylou’s cover reveals the country soul of the song’s theme. Boulder to Birmingham is of course a classic and has earned its place in my personal country favourites playlist.

Really nice. Will listen again.

This is a good example of the good that this project has done for me, as a music fan. Had I gotten this album earlier in the project, I'd have ripped it to shreds in my review. Now, almost 500 albums in, I have a little more perspective. Emmylou clearly has one of the best voices in country music. There's no argument possible there. She's an incredible vocalist. The issue here is the songs. The vast majority of them are utter slogs. Mind-numbingly slow drags through the mud of steel guitar and banjo refrains. But it's far from the worst of the country albums I've gotten on this list. In fact, it might be some of the best. There's a joy here that's missing in the songs of Loretta Lynn or Merle Haggard. The production is solid. And, of course, Emmylou is exceptional. I can't bring myself to give it a 5 but it has earned every bit of its 4-star review.

I'm not sure I've ever listened to Emmylou Harris. I get her mixed up with other folks in my head and I can't think of, ya know, that one Emmylou Harris song. But damn this is strong. This is just one of those perfect little albums, where everything fits. Even her doing a cover of Coat of Many Colors works just perfectly. I'd only heard that from Dolly Parton, with that distinctive Dolly Parton voice. And yet Harris knocks it out of the park. Is it that I believe everything that comes out of her mouth? Probably. Dug this one. I'll go back.

This leans a little too country and less folk than I enjoy, but tows that line pretty well. I enjoy it more than I expected to at first. "Bluebird Wine" was the only track I knew well before this and it is a great song. "Boulder to Birmingham" was another standout track. "Sleepless Nights" based off listen counts is a underrated song on this album, it is calm and heartfelt. I really enjoyed this album a lot more than I thought I would.

I didnt know much about Emmylou Harris before I heard this album, but shes got a hell of a voice and theres not a weak track on this whole album. Special credit to "Bottle let me down" and Beatles cover "For No One" - 4/5

Fantastic country album. Especially back in the 70’s I’d wonder if she was one of the pioneers. Either way, this felt like I was listening to a variant of Joni Mitchell or The Carpenters. Really liked this album.

For some reason I've been itching to get this album on the list for a while. Not sure why, I've never heard it, but I was intrigued by the cover and title. Emmylou's a country singer, and apparently this one is mostly covers, but she does a great job. You could call it more of a collection of songs than an "album" but whatever it is, it works well. There's an excellent energy stringing all of these together, and while the styles shift here and there the production and instrumentation remains skillful and interesting. I really enjoyed a lot of this, plenty of replay value for me, and it's refreshing as always to get a country album, and from a female artist no less. The list needs more stuff like this to balance itself out! Favorite tracks: Bluebird Wine, If I Could Only Win Your Love, Boulder to Birmingham, Coat of Many colors, For No One, Bottle Let Me Down. Album art: Really love this one. I've seen it a lot, and maybe just by looking at a list of albums including on this list, but something about it sticks with me. The picture seems modern for some reason, maybe it's the name too. There are quite a few female country artists today with similar names and aesthetics that made me think Emmylou's a kindred spirit. But the framing/colors are great here, and the picture is nice and contemplative. 4.5/5

Pretty good. Emmylou has a great voice and the instrumentation is fantastic. The album was a but samey though

I'm not a fan of Country music, but I am a fan of Emmylou Harris. But with songs this good and a voice as angelic as hers, genres are just not really applicable. It's all just music and this is good music. simple as that. 4 stars

Great country album with a signature Emmylou vocal performance. Great run time and production.

Original country music that is bookended by two great, faster songs which I liked a lot. In between there were loads of slower ballads that, despite me wishing a bit faster tempo, were still good and enjoyable

The first memorable experience listening to Emmylou Harris was from her 2000 album "Red Dirt Girl" and this early offering from 1975 has all of the indicators that made "Red Dirt Girl" a good listen. "Boulder to Burmingham" has that gloried mix of hymn, some blues, with a tinge of solemn gospel. The type of combination that defined that softer-almost-folk type of country that this particular era became known for. Emmylou's vocals are remarkably clear, her lyrics enunciated without fault. Musically, the band is clearly tailored to her range. This is a well-done album from 1975, and at the risk of overstatement, Emmylou Harris should be considered a gift to this genre if not for her longevity. Where Dolly Parton brought out the glam and brightness of Nashville as one its best entertainers/singer/songwriter, Emmylou Harris has taken the more studious approach in her career, a sort of grounding to remind everyone that outside of the stage, there is a heart and soul to this music.

Thanks to 1001 I'm discovering I actually have a pretty big soft spot for country music.

Definitely prefer this older county style compared to... anything modern. Not something I'd always wanna throw on, but I can't deny her charm and vocal prowess. Some great harmonies and instrumentation.

Vraiment bon folk country, une decouverte ! 4.85

This is a terrific album. Beautiful lyrics delivered in a timeless style

Loved it

Great album. Would like to hear some original songs performed by Harris, but her voice is no joke; beautiful, soft and charming.

Track 1 is now one of my favourite songs! Had never listened to EH before. Loved most of the album.

Really solid country music album from someone I've never heard of. Really liked the first two songs of the album and the rest kept me engaged. Feels ahead of its time too

Beautiful voice. Nice discovery, I will try to find this on LP asap !

I didn't expect that, but I loved the album. It's country, but with a slight folk undertone. Honesty and emotion are palpable in the music of Emmylou Harris. A very nice discovery for me, even if I'm not a die-hard fan of country music.

Najdraže su mi Bluebird Wine (htio sam da bude više takvih), Before Believing, For No One (Bitlsova prerada) i Queen of the Silver Dollar. Napravila je ovaj album kao pravi album, kao da je njen, a ne da je prepjevala tuđe. Koincidecija??? - taman ima cover od Dusty Springfield (Coat of Many Colors) koje smo prethodno imali, jučer. Huhu.

A very pleasant listen. I'm not massively into country, but this all seemed very well done. Fave track - "Bluebird Wine", maybe, or "For No One"

Very nice.

I know Emmylou Harris from her work with Gram Parsons which I love but regrettably have listened to much more. That is the great thing about this challenge as it is getting me to listen to more than my dozen favourite albums on repeat. This is a beautiful album. Really good traditional country that just shys away from the Nashville glitz. I need to give this a few more listens for all the songs to sink in. A couple of songs lose me but a few others sound as good as her work on Grevious Angel.

Great songwriting and vocals.

She's the original angelic country singer that all copycats are based on. And this is a really good album. Showcases perfectyly what she is about

Queen of the silverdollar. Fucking fire dude. This album is great.

jättebra, klockren kvalité och mix. Bra känsla, roliga texter och topnotch 'instrumentalitet'. Önskar all country va så här

Amazing voice, good classic country

Awesome album. The varied instrumentation and is rousing during the lively songs and beautiful during the pretty songs, and naturally the singing is also on point.

Listening to this album, it hit me that there is a distinct lack of country music on this list. I can only really think of one other straight-up country album that I've gotten. Regardless, this album is everything that's good about country. Harris has a beautiful voice full of emotion, and the accompanying music is good without distracting from from her as the focus. I'm not in love with her cover of For No One by the Beatles, but at least it's more tasteful than most Beatles covers 4/5

Her voice is beautiful.

Emmylou’s voice is just incredible throughout this album. The songwriting is a joy to listen to and the covers are perfectly matched. A little on the slower side but it fits the tone well.

“Pieces of the Sky” by Emmylou Harris (1975) This major label debut by superstar Emmylou Harris is a fine collection of covers of worthy songs, with excellent country instrumental arrangements providing plenty of clear space for individual flourishes (pedal steel, banjo, mandolin, strings, and you name it). The meaty midsection of the album is passionate and potently evocative. Harris’ voice is outstanding, with tremendous use of dynamic variation (e.g., “Too Far Gone”), touching stylings, dreamy resonance, bold interjections of power, and country-honest inflection. It’s all demonstrated on this record, which goes a long way toward explaining why she subsequently became one of the most sought-after backing vocalists in the history of recorded music. Her selection of songs by other artists provides a suitable vehicle for the passion of her performance, eclectic yet well ordered. She teases us into it with the opening track “Bluebird Wine”, a shuffling thank you note to liquid (and cheap) intemperance. The album ends with “Queen of the Silver Dollar”, a raucous and recklessly triumphant celebration of lower middle class (im)morality written by Shel Silverstein (of all people). God, I love the proletariat. Merle Haggard’s “Bottle Let Me Down” is delivered by Harris with sugar and sass, reflecting on the bad feelings one has when the alcohol doesn’t quite ease the pain. Maybe she needs to graduate from wine to port. The one song on this album written by Harris is “Boulder to Birmingham”, a beautifully poetic lament, grieving over an unexpected loss (the demise of her mentor Gram Parsons). Sadly flawed (by a gimmicky rapid oscillation between left and right channels applied to the Rhodes keyboard), it still gets a sob and tears on only the second listen. And again, she goes from wail to whisper in an instant, and then back again as she storms into the chorus: “I would walk all the way from Boulder to Birmingham if I thought I could see your face”, she sings. But it ain’t gonna happen, she knows, as she looks out the airplane window at the prairie and the sky. “The hardest part is knowing I’ll survive.” Hard for you, Emmylou. Fortunate for us. Harris gives a sublime interpretation of Dolly Parton’s “Coat of Many Colors”, a touching alternate take on the biblical story of Jacob’s preferred son, Joseph, and the envy of his brothers (Genesis 37:3-4, KJV). It’s a rich embellishment of the notion of poverty, suitable for Everyman. If you’re not (yet) a fan of country music, this album just might make you one. 4/5

She has a beautiful voice. I loved the Beatles cover.

Good background music. Really nice voice and not too “country”.

Country animado. Está bien.

If you’re gonna listen to country this is a good choice.

Emmylou Harris is a titan of the Americana scene. Utilizing traditional instrumentation, a subtle western beat, and a gift for storytelling, she creates earnest, compelling music that is entirely her own. Like the outlaws of the 70s and 80s, Harris operates outside the Nashville formula, and borrows across genres.

I keep hearing Alison Krauss. But this is way before!

Stonking opening track and then it ebbed and flowed after that but in an enjoyable way. Will defo listen again

liked the "Coat of Many Colors" cover, I feel like I should listen to this one a bunch more

YIHAAAA BABY! ZO BEGINT GE EEN ALBUM 🤠 If i could only win your love, mooi.

Yes i like it, ook nog wat anders geluisterd van artist and i like it

Fleetwood mac vibeke en euhm Gilf

Was pleasantly surprised by this one

What a voice!

A lovely country album. 8.1/10

Pretty good. Very good voice. Not remarkable enough to listen to regularly, but very nice for the background and definitely something I could listen to again, especially within larger playlists.

Prachtig!

Country music, alright if you’re into that genre.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this country folk album- especially when a beebles cover came out of nowhere

Never heard this - this is great country music! Her voice and the production is a sweet kiss of Americana

Country del mero mero. El disco abre muy bien con Bluebird Wine, que es mi favorita del disco. Siguen tracks buenos y muy estándar del género. Mi siguiente favorito es Blottle Let me Down. En general son letras de sufrimiento, por eso me gustó mucho la primera. Buen cover de For No One de The Beatles. 3.5 que sube a 4 porque sí lo disfruté.

I must like country music. It just sounds like *music*. Particularly the duets. Don’t know why those are able to get through these jaded ears and into my brain.

Don’t usually like country but this was nice, great voice

Great tracks, classic country, awesome covers. Not my usual tastes but will listen to again

Lovely stuff

Really good thanks emmylou

Love it.

Hank Williams did it in the 50s, emmylou Harris in the 70s

Enjoyed a lot!

It was a nice listen, I can't say too much about it.

Almost magical, which is remarkable for an album of, as I understand it, mostly covers. It contains a nice range of country sounds, and Emmylou's voice is a smooth constant. It doesn't outlive its welcome in any way, but near the end becomes a collection of songs as opposed to a cohesive LP.

1/6 Real good folk album. Standout Tracks: Bluebird Wine, Bottle Let Me Down, Queen of the Silver Dollar

The singing and playing are flawless. However, although Emmylou got here first, I think there are stronger collections of alt country songs out there, which i will almost certainly be going back to before this one.

Not a country fan, but she has a nice voice musicianship was fine

Enjoyed it and interesting to listen to an artist I’d not heard of before.

I’ve got really into country folk over the last couple of years. This one is pleasant enough but isn’t exactly a standout in the genre.

Lovely voice as heard earlier with Parsons, etc, and these are pleasant, uniquely Emmylou interpretations but never reaches the level of essential.

This is generally considered the debut album from Emmylou. It’s basically covers of other country-western tunes. She played the sax in her high school marching band, so I like her. There’s nothing horrible or fabulous here, just standard country music.

Probably my favorite country album I have gotten so far, which is not saying much cause I don't really like country. I loved the opening track and if the rest of the album brought that energy then I think I would rate it higher. Just not a fan of the slow country ballads, but Emmylou does have one Hell of a voice. Favorite Track - Bluebird Wine Least Favorite Track - For No One ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ok - for country then this is pretty good. Great voice. 3.

3.5 stars I enjoyed it. Didn’t love it but enjoyed it. I’d listen again and it might grow on me.

Lovely!

she had a lovely voice!

Emmylou Harris is a beautiful singer. She is great at harmonising. She’s not quite as good without Gram (he wasn’t as good without her either)

“Bluebird Wine” is fantastic. The rest of this album isn’t as great.

It’s nice to be reminded that country music hasn’t always been centered around, “I’m a redneck and proud of my ignorance,” lyrics and a sentimentality for an America that never existed. Plus her voice makes me think of Cindy Lauper with a southern vs. New York accent. 3.5*

Enjoyable, all sounded the same but was nice to sit around and listen to while working. Favorite Track: Too Far Gone

Pretty good 🩷🩷🩷 I was surprised when I saw the names of two Beatles in the credits for the ninth track 💗💗💗 It happens to be my favorite as well. Thank you

Can't vote against the Queen.

I like Dolly Parton better sorry

Not bad, she reminds me of Dolly Parton but don't tell anyone I said that. Now I'm not really a fan of country, but this is a perfectly fine album for me
