Steely Dan
2/5
One of the most overrated bands ever. Being "technically" good is just code for really, really boring. Aja is better but this really shouldn't be on any list.

David Ackles
2/5
I was really excited to get an album from an artist I had really never heard of and seemingly nobody else had either. Wow. What a disappointment. This was not good.

Led Zeppelin
5/5
Torn between 4&5. It's really good so I'm leaning towards 5 since pretty much every song rocks. They're overplayed and over blown but man are they good. I was so into this growing up that I tend to stay away from it because it's lost it's magic. But it really is great.

Johnny Cash
2/5
Johnny Cash is one of those guys that somehow gets a pass for most people. The "I don't like country but Johnny Cash is good" crowd. I mean, this isn't even really country. The album that sent a bunch of boomers to Potbelly's to play covers. There's better country, there's better albums, there's just not a whole lot here. It also seems like a big cash grab

If you don't like this album, then you really have no business on this journey. This is experimental, different, and incredible.

Sex Pistols
2/5
Every song sounds the same and that's not a good thing. Without sounding too pretentious, this is music for morons.
The War On Drugs
4/5
Fun listen. I can get why people think it's boring and it is a little long but all in all, a solid album.
R.E.M.
4/5
Good indie rock. Finally grew on me as a band.
Talking Heads
4/5
The next four albums are better but still a great debut. Brian Eno brought out the best and weirdest part of them. If not for the rest of their career, this would've been remembered as a fun and forgotten oddity.
The xx
4/5
This was a refreshing album when it came out, though it does get a little boring. Still a fun listen.
Songhoy Blues
5/5
This album is why I use lists like this. So good.
The Who
5/5
This might hold the record for most songs used in commercials. I mean, sure there's lots of huge songs that I loved when I was 12 but they've almost moved from being songs to something else entirely. I can imagine this being a huge deal when it came out but now it feels old hat.
Tears For Fears
5/5
One of my favorite albums. Lots of hits, album cuts are great, not really any duds.
Elbow
3/5
Pretty good album. Lot of sad sack romantic lines. Honestly, probably doesn't need to be on this list.
The Clash
5/5
I've always felt like this wasn't a punk album, mainly because it's actually good and not just shouting about how hard it is to be 14. It's loaded with great songs, even though usually double albums peter out this one stays strong. I would say this is more ska/rock/pop than punk but it's also a great album.
Magazine
4/5
Sounds a little dated, as all groundbreaking albums tend to. I feel like post punk only got better or maybe I just really like Wire. Passable enough but I don't think I'll be returning to this well.
Sufjan Stevens
5/5
The only thing I don't like about this album is that you can only listen to it for the first time once. One of the greatest of the 21st century, so much to love about this and not just because I'm from Chicago. The stories are so layered that you can easily put yourself there. The instrumentation is unexpected. Watch the concert from Austin city limits and it's even better.
Elton John
4/5
If this wasn't a double album, this could be his Thriller. It has about the same amount of hits that are still in constant rotation but is bogged down by the deep cuts. That being said, I do love this album and like all those songs.
DJ Shadow
5/5
I can't see what's not to like about this. A perfect album, especially when placed in context with it's release. This has been in steady rotation for me since I first heard it. It's usually something I listen to in private so I can really focus on it. If you can't appreciate this, you don't like music.
Kate Bush
5/5
One of my favorite albums, the two sides work almost as separate pieces. The second half is definitely more challenging but so worth it. Kate Bush is a genius and this is her masterpiece.
Christine and the Queens
2/5
It's fine. Seems like there are better choices out there, but I could see this being a flash in the pan for certain people. Not great staying power.
Soundgarden
4/5
Once I was in a car with my parents while Black Hole Sun was on the radio and my mom called this music to commit suicide to. How right she was. A much stronger album than I remember it being and I'm not huge on grunge or heavy metal in general.
Bon Jovi
2/5
It's whatever. Not an essential listen.
Nina Simone
4/5
Not really for me but still highly influential and unique
The Smashing Pumpkins
4/5
Way better than I remember. I'm more partial to the softer, album cuts than the over played mega hits. Still too long though, as all double albums are. If this was a tight ten or twelve songs, would be a five star.
Scritti Politti
2/5
I thought I would like this but it feels like I'm trapped in a department store. Every song virtually sounds the same. Not worth being on this list, or really being an album.
The White Stripes
5/5
Great album! Solid rock grooves, lives up to it's potential. The album that so many wannabes dream of
A Tribe Called Quest
5/5
Holds up way better than almost every other 90s hip hop since there's not skits bogging it down.
Elliott Smith
2/5
Not really my style. It runs on too long and doesn't really progress. I've had tons of friends swear by him but I've never really got it.
Missy Elliott
3/5
Actually better than I expected. Prob not a must listen but not bad. The pussycat song is insane.
Dead Kennedys
1/5
Punk sucks. The only nice part of this album was that it was short, competitively.
Deep Purple
3/5
It's fine
Franz Ferdinand
4/5
Not bad
U2
5/5
Look, I get hating U2. I was there for years, having come up when they were the lamest, most overblown, self important thing on Earth. That's where they stand today. But they had a run of pretty solid albums. Eno and Lanois bring out the best in them. Sure, they're basically Coldplay but a huge hit is that for a reason.
This album holds up better than it should, even though it runs it's course as all of their albums do. There's not really a skippable song though.
Ray Charles
3/5
So I like jazz and I like old country but this just seemed like old pop music. Maybe at the time it was revelatory but it just seemed like old forgotten songs. I would much rather listen to many of the originals.
Roxy Music
5/5
While Eno and Roxy Music both got better throughout the rest of the decade, this is still a great album. I haven't listened to it in some time and was amazed at how great it still sounds.
Amy Winehouse
2/5
I've always just thought this album was okay
GZA
5/5
Great album. Wu Tang is somehow both huge and under appreciated. They avoid the dumb skits so common in 90s rap, especially in West Coast, in favor of movie samples, which holds up much better. The beats, the flow, the lines, all excellent.
Morrissey
3/5
It has it's moments but can't hold up to anything by the Smiths. He's best when he's held back
Genesis
4/5
Some real banger stuff, but kinda runs on too long. This is as prog as I can get
Hole
4/5
I'm not a huge fan of 90s alternative or grunge or that whole scene in general but whenever I listen to Hole, I'm always surprised at how much I like it. It's the right balance of everything and plays itself better than expected.
The Rolling Stones
4/5
This is an album I've come back to many times. It's solid but there's better
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
Solid stuff, even if there's a few filler tracks
Bob Dylan
4/5
An album that takes time to grow on you. This took me about 5 listens over fifteen years before it clicked and now I suggest it to people who like peak Bob but rightly don't get into the later stuff. Maybe I'm older and more bitter now, but these songs hit.
The Magnetic Fields
3/5
I get not looking twee but I don't get all the negative reviews from people who never listened to it. With a list this dense, you're going to get overly ambitious twee albums that are more concept than content.
I've listened to this a few times in my life and it is a slog to get through. There's a few songs I actually like and listen to on their own but this album, I feel, is mostly remembered for it's length. Had this been just a 45 minute album called love songs, it would've vanished into the twee ether.
It's not all that bad, just mostly unmemorable songs.
Beck
4/5
T. Rex
4/5
This is what I got into in high school a good thirty five years later. It does have that optimistic, swaggering quality to it that makes glam rock so identifiable.
Deep Purple
2/5
This is so overblown and unessential. I'm fine with 70s rock and all but this is just like, nonsense. It's not great, it's not ambitious, it is a product of it's time but that's why the album versions are on this list. This is something the classic rock station plays on Sunday nights to cut costs.
Everything But The Girl
1/5
It's so forgettable that I keep forgetting I'm listening to it. It's like being trapped in Walgreens or some off brand department store.
Louis Prima
5/5
Classic album. Loved it .
The Byrds
3/5
It mostly just sounds dated to me. I never really got into the byrds
Kanye West
5/5
Seriously one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time. Great concept, beats, storyline, samples, guests, everything.
The Smiths
5/5
What can I say, this is one of my favorite albums. I like every second of it.
Gorillaz
3/5
I remember when Clint Eastwood came out and my mind was blown. That song still holds up but the rest is kinda mid
Eric Clapton
2/5
The kind of album that was probably really cool at the time but has aged horribly. So boring and just sits there. A staple of horrible "classic" rock stations played between the star spangled banner. I never really liked solo Clapton beyond a handful of songs and none of them are on this. Worse, it's not even offensive. Just bland.
Linkin Park
1/5
There's a lot of really good albums not on this list and to think they lost out to this white trash garbage. I hated this when it was popular and it's only gotten worse. This is music for morons that are still upset about their high school girlfriend talking to someone else thirty years later.
Jimi Hendrix
4/5
I can't say every song is a stone cold classic but there are several on this. Electric Ladyland and Band of Gypsies are better albums but Jimi is the epitome of cool
David Bowie
4/5
A great album from a man staring into the eyes of death. Way better than anything he had done in a few decades, this took me by surprise when it came out and it still holds up
Simply Red
2/5
Not very good. I had never really heard this before and won't be hearing it again
Def Leppard
3/5
I mean, it's not really my style of music but it's fine. I've listened to this several times over my life and never been into it but also not turned off because my ears are bleeding
David Bowie
4/5
I like this album. It's not his best, his most influential, nor his most popular but I think it's a weird, jacked up album.
Dusty Springfield
2/5
I don't know. It's fine. The problem inherent in this list is that albums didn't develop until about 1966 so they were looking for something to represent this genre which was basically all singles. This would have been better served by a compilation album of singles, but they opted to not do that. So either stick to essential albums or don't.
Joni Mitchell
3/5
I don't get it but I don't think it's made for me
Beastie Boys
4/5
It's better than it should be and better than what they put out after. It's a fun party album even if the vocals are annoying
The Jesus And Mary Chain
4/5
I liked it. Honestly, the most solid album I've heard by them
Deerhunter
5/5
I love this album. It sounded great when it came out and sounds great today. I can get not seeing how incredible it is because maybe it only speaks to a certain breed, but man it's good
Elliott Smith
2/5
Not really my cup of tea
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
4/5
It's a great album. Entry level stuff, but classics. Some of the songs aren't as good as the others but still high praise
Roxy Music
5/5
Relistening to Roxy Music makes me wonder if they're one of the greatest bands of all time. I'm honestly shocked Siren, Stranded, and Avalon aren't on this list when so much other crap is. This is art rock done right. Weird yet accessible. Influential while still being popular in their own way. Shocking while at the same time acting almost lame. I love it.
Dinosaur Jr.
4/5
Solid album. Better then a lot of other slacker rock. They sound great live too.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
3/5
Started off being indifferent but then the second half really drew me in. I'll probably need to listen to it a few more times before making a good assessment.
Beastie Boys
3/5
Honestly, I've always found this band pretty annoying. Would rather listen to just the Dust Bros without the annoying shouting
Iron Maiden
2/5
It's pretty much like Deep Purple in that it fucking sucks
Napalm Death
1/5
I mean, at least it has the world's shortest song. Other than that, I hated it.
The The
2/5
I thought I might enjoy this, but I did not. Very mediocre and forgettable.
Ice T
2/5
God, 90s hip hop is so overblown and long. Does anyone think there's actually 72 minutes of quality music on this? I mean, it's fine at best. I got news for you buddy
Otis Redding
5/5
One of the greatest albums of all time. Every time I listen to it, I'm blown away.
The Cure
5/5
One of the greatest. Play it loud and play it often.
Arcade Fire
3/5
It's not my favorite but them. It has a couple good songs. This was the first album I heard by them and feel the same about it since it came out.
Jerry Lee Lewis
4/5
So I had to go over to YouTube to get the whole album but it was worth it. I've heard these songs in studio and most them have transcended from just songs to standards but hearing them live in this setting with the crowd going absolutely nuts and the band killing it made me wish I was there.
John Lennon
4/5
I used to love this album. Listened to it non-stop. Now, I'm pretty tired of it. It's not bad, it's dated, it's Lennon. The snide digs at Paul and thinking the whole world revolves around him work better at 12 than they do decades later. Mixed feelings between a 3 and a 4.
Billy Joel
3/5
It's okay. Moving out is probably the best song. The rest is kinda just background music.
Run-D.M.C.
2/5
So I already don't like 80s hip hop for the most part and bringing in Aerosmith, who sucks, in doesn't help. It really feels like this was made for suburban teens to feel cool. I don't like it. People lose their mind when some of these songs come on but I don't get it. It really all sounds the same. I guess you can call it influential but most of what this spawned kinda sucks too.
Elvis Presley
3/5
Kinda lacking on hits. It's good, not he's a singles guy.
Butthole Surfers
4/5
So way better than I expected. Not just some mindless punk or sludge album. You never really know where each track is going. I'll take weird any day of the week. The blending of styles and samples worked really well.
AC/DC
2/5
I've never actually sat down and listened to this album before. All the jokes about their songs sounding the same are true. Extremely mid. I'm honestly not even sure why they're still popular decades later. Not even mid, pretty bad and stupid.
The White Stripes
4/5
Its a good album. I feel like they got better but this is still an indie classic.
Pink Floyd
5/5
One of the few albums I loved as a kid that I still can listen and actually love. It's really good. I get that they sold out and it's a dorm room poster band but to deny that it's anything short of perfect is absurd. Sure Animals and Wish You Were Here are maybe more ambitious but only because they set their own stage with this. People also sleep on Meddle.
Public Image Ltd.
4/5
You know, I can see why people wouldn't like this. I don't like the sex pistols at all but this I can get behind. It's weird, spooky, different and that's what I want my music to be.
k.d. lang
4/5
I've never really listened to her before but I enjoyed it. It's probably not gonna get into my heavy rotation but it's nice for a rainy Sunday afternoon to read to.
The Jam
4/5
Pretty good. Takes me back to when I listened to stuff like this almost exclusively in high school. It never really stuck with me but whenever I hear it again, it makes me feel young, in love, and heartbroken. Good stuff.
Paul McCartney and Wings
3/5
It's an okay record. Definitely over hyped. It's something your aunt says she loves and you can't find it in you to criticize so you let it play out because really it's not that bad and not worth bringing down someone's joy of it.
The Cure
4/5
Good gloom. Whenever I hear a forest,I think of how I saw the Cure live in 2016 and how it was in a different key and even more slowed down so he could sing it well. It's a good album but they only got better
Neneh Cherry
3/5
Better than most 80s and early 90s hip hop but that's a pretty low bar. On the whole, pretty forgettable except for the lead off track which I'll throw on at parties occasionally. Not really worth the rest of the album.
Kate Bush
3/5
I love Kate Bush but this isn't my favorite. Most of the stuff doesn't really stick except for this woman's work. I'm sure if I listen to it more, it'll become one of my favorites but out the gate, eh
808 State
4/5
I like this album. It's weird. I wouldn't put it on at a party so I'm confused as to why it's like club music. This is like summer driving music to me. I've listened to it early morning, afternoon, evening, it works. But I like this kinda repetitive, synthy, dark stuff
Count Basie & His Orchestra
4/5
It's a classic swing album
Beatles
4/5
It's Revolver. Not my favorite by them so I'm judging more harshly. I feel like they only got better.
Funkadelic
5/5
Great, great album. I haven't listened to it in years and it's even better
Black Sabbath
4/5
Not as good as Paranoid but still good
Fred Neil
4/5
Really good album. I throw it on occasionally and I'm always satisfied
James Brown
4/5
Great album. Super influential. Could even be longer
Sade
4/5
I'm torn between a 4 and 5. It's really good. I just don't think people get how good it is.
Van Morrison
5/5
Easiest 5. Incredible performance.
Kings of Leon
2/5
I dated a girl that tried to convince me the Kings of Leon were actually good. I don't think I've ever actually gotten through an entire song without my eyes glazing over. It's not that it's bad, it's just that it's so incredibly mediocre. I'd actually rather it was bad so you could say they suck. Instead they just exist.
George Harrison
5/5
Look, you don't count sides 5&6. And even if you did, that's better than almost every other shitty ass jam band or psychedelic freak out album. Arguably the greatest double album of all time. The sound is warm, the songs are great, the band is comfortable.
Black Sabbath
4/5
Solid album
Pretenders
3/5
The hits are fine. I've never really been into them.
Buffalo Springfield
2/5
Dated and boring. Neil Young was always better solo and the rest was dull.
Radiohead
5/5
Easy 5. Doesn't need a review.
Kendrick Lamar
5/5
It's a classic. By far his best work. Great concept album that also has singles. This was huge when it came out and still holds up.
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
5/5
Side one is perfect. Unskippable. Side two is only great in comparison. I get why some people would find it dated but I think this is the strongest CS&N were with Young only getting better.
The Zombies
4/5
About the only psychedelic music I actually enjoy. It's a strange album.
Kendrick Lamar
3/5
Eh, I feel like good kid and damn are better. This seems too overblown
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
5/5
Stellar album. One of my favorites. This never really comes out of rotation and every time I hear I'm like, wow this is really good
Steely Dan
2/5
One of the most overrated bands ever. Being "technically" good is just code for really, really boring. Aja is better but this really shouldn't be on any list.
B.B. King
5/5
I think I like live at cook county jail better but still great
Elvis Presley
5/5
I mean, it's a classic. To diminish it by being edgy or refusing to listen is asinine. It's one of the first real albums and really it's closer to country than r&b. This is the album that launched a thousand bands. It's dated and he's more of a singles guy anyway but it's still great.
Suicide
5/5
If you don't like this album, then you really have no business on this journey. This is experimental, different, and incredible.
Tom Waits
3/5
Tom got better once he stopped trying to be a weird jazzman and started just being a weirdo. This goes on for way too long. It's not bad, it's just thirty minutes in you get it and nothing really changes.
The Hives
3/5
I mean, I'm a sucker for this kind of music especially since I've never listened to them. I remember them being a big buzzy band in the press at the time but I never liked punk. It's not bad. I think I'm just excited to hear something new because I feel like this list has mostly just given me stuff I know.
Meat Loaf
5/5
It's a banger album. Couple of slow tracks to mellow it out but overall great
Talking Heads
5/5
One of my favorites. This is required listening
Sepultura
1/5
Seeing these reviews mention growth makes me wonder what it grew from. It's like if your fungal infection is spreading and being like, well it's showing signs of growth.
I hated this.
Maxwell
4/5
Super solid album. Good grooves. Nice flow.
Minutemen
5/5
Torn between a 4 & 5. They're not technically that good but man it grooves so hard. I don't like punk but this is just enough that it works. It's different than others albums.
Aretha Franklin
3/5
I mean, it's good but outside of the hits I feel it's a little redundant.
Johnny Cash
Frank Ocean
2/5
When this came out, everyone went crazy for it. I tried listening to it then and was extremely bored. I did not get it at all. I was a big odd future guy and he was with them. The only song I really liked was super rich kids. Listening to it now, I feel the same way. I don't get why this was so revolutionary. There was a whole genre of r&b that sounded just like this and I also found boring.
I still see people posting about listening to this album and crying. I don't get it.
Queen
2/5
Is there a band more overrated than Queen? Tight race with Billy Joel for biggest hacks out there. They heard original idea men David Bowie and Elton John and said, let's do that but way way worse and more annoying and then we can pretend we're artistic. It fucking sucks.
Kanye West
3/5
Let's be real, this is where he fell off. Could good tracks but nothing from his golden era.
Led Zeppelin
5/5
Torn between 4&5. It's really good so I'm leaning towards 5 since pretty much every song rocks. They're overplayed and over blown but man are they good. I was so into this growing up that I tend to stay away from it because it's lost it's magic. But it really is great.
Yes
3/5
I hate most prog rock but this isn't bad. Some good guitar vamping that thirty five years later became a whole genre. I don't like the vocals. I once called Yes the band that will get you laid the least.
ZZ Top
4/5
Okay so it's pretty good. Tres hombres is better. People hate them because they became popular but isn't that the goal?
The Gun Club
4/5
It's not punk, which is good. Weird indie post punk vibes. Not bad for an album I've never heard before. Might actually end up in the rotation.
Radiohead
5/5
I've always dumped on this album because they only got better but after sitting down and listening to it start to finish, wow it's way better than I remember. And it's still not even a top five album by them for me.
Michael Jackson
3/5
It's got a couple jams you've heard about twenty million times before. The rest is whatever.
The Flaming Lips
5/5
Torn between a 4&5. I loved this album for years and saw them live too many times to count. Coming back to it, it's still really good. It meanders a bit towards the end though. It sounds great. I think I talked myself into the 5.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
3/5
Yeah I mean, it's cool.
Nico
4/5
Y'all ain't twee? I mean, I can understand not liking her voice or the flute but it be what it be. You just gotta be cut from a certain cloth.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
3/5
It was okay. If it was fifteen or twenty minutes shorter, it might end up in my rotation but the theme and vibe didn't really change for almost an hour.
Jimi Hendrix
5/5
This album rocks. Classic albums can be overrated but this hits.
Thelonious Monk
4/5
The problem with this list is that not all of these albums are equal. I'm not saying that because I don't like punk or metal or whatever but that they seemed to scramble for the last couple decades, loading it up with albums that were popular for two weeks or whatever and just middling rock music. And then the fifties albums are all like stone cold classics. This is a list that should've given itself more parameters, maybe nothing could be added till it had been around for ten or so years. That way they could reflect more and have more brilliant albums such as this.
Love
1/5
People like this? I've tried to listen to this to get it maybe once a decade and every time come away feeling like, wow this is so lame and stupid. Boring, lame, uninteresting. Hard pass.
ABBA
4/5
Sometimes a pop album catches you so off guard with the quality that it makes you rethink what you know. There's so many high quality, catchy songs on this album that it's no wonder everyone knows them. There's also a weird, dark underside to many of the songs. Maybe it's because the singers don't really speak English but it seems very universal.
The Birthday Party
2/5
This is the third Nick Cave album I've gotten. I'm not a huge fan of him, nor do I think he warrants having six albums on this list. This album was super whatever. Can't say I'm a fan or that it was interesting. The album cover pretty much tells you all you need. Ugly, under thought, dated.
U2
5/5
I like really don't wanna be one of those people that like U2 but you can't ignore their power. This album rules. Start to finish. Super post punk, angry at the world, cool guitars and drums.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
5/5
CCR is one of the very few bands I've loved and listened to my entire life and never felt burnt out on. Yeah it's kinda cheesy and overplayed but it's really good. They released a ton of killer material in only three years and it's staying power is incredible. Bands are still trying to sound like this.
Miles Davis
4/5
A very important jazz album. Not one of my go tos but I'll throw it on occasionally and be happy
Goldfrapp
3/5
Not bad. Never listened to it before. It's less weird bjork, which is good. Prob won't be working it's way into the rotation.
Kelela
3/5
It's fine. Kinda repetitive with nothing really standing out. Good background music. I wish one of the songs had like a big pop moment similar to the Weeknd but it all seemed like deep album cuts.
Yes
2/5
You're allowed one Yes album. This is not it.
The Isley Brothers
4/5
Solid album. I come back to this from time to time. It grooves. Summer breeze is great.
Cyndi Lauper
4/5
This was way better than I remember. First side is all hits. Second side is mostly hits. Very catchy but also borders on very annoying at parts. I'll throw this on at a party.
Baaba Maal
4/5
I guess I really like world music. This was a really good album. Definitely will be coming back to.
Public Enemy
2/5
I don't think I like rap anymore.
Johnny Cash
4/5
Bunch more crowd work than I expected. Really felt like a show as opposed to a concert.
Michael Jackson
3/5
It's just okay. Rick James had better stuff. So did Prince. And the Isley Brothers. Maybe it was a game changer at the time but it's got like three tracks I'd come back to and the rest is fine.
Prince
4/5
Weird album. I bought this for like six bucks in college and it's a treasured find. For real fans.
Baaba Maal
3/5
This generator is so bizarre. I get two albums by this guy in a week. That being said, Lam Toro was much more inventive with the blending of beats. This is a much more straight forward world album.
Leonard Cohen
4/5
So will I be listening to this a lot? Probably not. Is it better than I expected? Yes. It's sort of like the anti Blackstar. I was torn between a 3 & 4 because it is good but like, I'm not going to listen frequently. I'll rate it the same as Blackstar.
Public Enemy
2/5
I don't like Public Enemy I've learned. Maybe it was crazy at the time but it's like not good at all
Elton John
4/5
Not my favorite album by him but I do throw it on from time to time. I really want to give this a three but it's almost more of a vibes album than a song album. It's very warm and autumn feeling. I don't really ever need to hear Tiny Dancer again though.
Kraftwerk
5/5
Great album. Everytime I listen to this, I feel excited because of how good it is.
Air
4/5
Good album. Ambient with singles.
The Afghan Whigs
4/5
Solid rock album. I hadn't really listened to them before but I'll throw this on sometimes.
2/5
Dumb album. I never liked Muse. The comparisons to Queen are fitting since they're both hacks.
Fleet Foxes
5/5
I love this album. It was big for me when it came out and it holds up.
Eminem
2/5
Why make an hour long album whining about how you don't care about what you think about them? Clearly, you do. It's like sitting at a bar and listening to the white trash complain about their ex. Just get over it.
Bruce Springsteen
5/5
I mean, it rules.
Van Morrison
5/5
One of those albums that you just can't put down. Side A is all killer. Side B is great. Such a warm sounding album.
Dire Straits
4/5
Good ass rock album
Leonard Cohen
3/5
It's overrated for sure. Some great songs, some forgettable. This is what pretentious people play in college to complain about how this city doesn't get them.
Slint
4/5
Good album. It rocks
The Good, The Bad & The Queen
3/5
It just sounds like Damon. Not bad but not great.
Björk
2/5
Somehow better than most bjork shit but still pretty bad. Parts of it sound cool but then I realized I was just thinking of how much more I like panda bear. Will not be listening to again
Dusty Springfield
2/5
I don't really get the hype around Dusty. She's not a great album artist and I would really rather listen to Aretha.
Neil Young
5/5
Def in my top ten albums of the seventies. It's so good. This is what an album should be like. Not a wasted moment, okay birds is whatever, but it's got it all
Prince
4/5
So, some of my favorite songs but then some real deep cuts. I'm amazed this sold so well. It's a jam though
The Smiths
3/5
This is closer to solo Morrissey. Louder than bombs would've been a better choice.
Christina Aguilera
2/5
This was so banal I'm not sure why it ever was on this list. I don't remember any of these songs. She's clearly trying to do an Amy Winehouse thing that really never caught on.
Lorde
2/5
Extremely dull album. Nothing stood out. And the breathy voice thing got old fast. They should really wait like five or ten years before adding anything to this list because nobody is going to be listening to this in the future.
Radiohead
5/5
One of the greatest
Billy Bragg
4/5
Wow this album rocks. I have been a passive fan of Wilco but this is really good. Def will end up in rotation.
Leonard Cohen
2/5
I just got really like Leonard Cohen that much. It all kinda sounds the same. After like three songs, I get bored.
Patti Smith
4/5
I think it's kind of overrated but I still like it. It's got it's time and it's place.
Pink Floyd
5/5
I don't like the last like four songs on this but the rest is great and cancels that out. Actually it's grown on me more over the years
Jefferson Airplane
2/5
Man this shit sucks. There's two good songs and then a bunch of nonsense.
Pere Ubu
4/5
It's not bad. Kinda dated but it's a vibe
Nirvana
5/5
There's not a lot that needs to be said about this. Like is it the best album ever? No. Is it really good? Yeah. Are there some stinkers? A few.
The Police
4/5
It's not my favorite album by them but it's still a solid Police album. Side two has the hits.
Beck
5/5
Super fun album. It feels like going to a party unstuck in time. There's something for everyone in here
Portishead
5/5
Incredible album. It's a total vibe and every time I come back to this album it still sounds great.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
5/5
Incredible album. Probably they're most iconic though everything they released is great.
Nick Drake
5/5
One of my favorite albums. When I first heard this at thirteen, it like changed how I viewed music. One of the first underground artists I first heard and it just seemed to link up with how I was feeling. I still listen to this album a lot and always enjoy it.
Neil Young
4/5
It's not my favorite album by Neil but it has a few of my favorite songs. His previous two albums are just much better though.
Boston
5/5
This might be the most over played album of all time. Every single track was on heavy rotation on the classic rock station. That being said, it's pretty crazy for one guy to make an album that's entirely hits. Yeah it's like kinda lame but really only because it's like permeated culture.
Wu-Tang Clan
5/5
Tie for best 90s rap album with illmatic. Terrific album. It's holds up so much better than it should.
Dolly Parton
4/5
Fun album. I'll throw this on from time to time.
The Adverts
2/5
Had a pretty good run of great albums so while it was kind of nice hearing something new, this did nothing for me.
3/5
Can't say it's an essential listen. It's fine. Middle of the road indie noise
Van Halen
3/5
It's fine. It has a couple stand outs and mostly filler. Extra star for not being long
The Go-Go's
3/5
Perfectly fine album. Belongs on this list but I only come back to it occasionally.
Jorge Ben Jor
5/5
Incredible album. A must listen.
Lambchop
3/5
What a bizarre album. Can't say I liked or hated it. It just sort of exists. I'm not sure why this was popular in the UK either. I'd rather listen to Jens Lekman.
Supergrass
3/5
It's a fine album. Not really my style but a good listen
Fiona Apple
2/5
Maybe this was better when it came out but it's a big nothing burger
Beatles
5/5
I mean, does it get better than this? This is like a turning point of music and possibly even society. This is the beginning of their albums not really having any duds or forgettable takes. And the movie is great.
The Darkness
2/5
It's fine. Definitely one note band. Like I guess it's fun but it's not doing a ton for me
Ozomatli
2/5
Who is this album for? I thought it was going to be a trip hopefully electronic album based on the cover but really I can't see why this is on the list. There's better versions of all of this that's left off. Big bust.
The Flaming Lips
4/5
This album is always more cohesive than I think it is. It's also better as an album than I remember. I love Yoshimi but this is almost a party album. The people that don't like it can shove it. They're also incredible live.
The Rolling Stones
3/5
The beginning of their tweet period before they really became what they are. It's not bad. I'll come back to this sometimes
Stevie Wonder
2/5
I'm not huge on Stevie. People love it so much and I try to find what it is and I just don't see it.
The Louvin Brothers
4/5
This is real country. Sad songs about how life is tragic. Not cars and how great everything is being a poor sucker and not being no city slicker. It's about the human condition and longing.
Various Artists
5/5
This album is incredible. Sure it's Christmas music and that can turn off a lot of people but it's all at such a high eatery
Stereolab
4/5
Different sounding album. Never listened to this before. She sounds like the guy from Yes but it works better here
Violent Femmes
3/5
This may be a prejudiced review since I've never liked people that are super into this album. It's fine. Punk rock for people that don't like punk. Except I never wanted to get into it. Most of the stuff sounds the same.
Rush
2/5
I get that it's popular but I'm really not sure why. This, Billy Joel, and Queen are my top artists of people like them because they want to fit in and "everyone loves them" it's really not very good
Skunk Anansie
3/5
It sounds good and not like a whole lot else coming out at the time. But none of it stuck with me. If someone put this on, I wouldn't complain but it won't be me putting it on.
Haircut 100
3/5
Love plus one is a great song that I play a lot. The rest sounds kinda like that but if this was twenty minutes of pop bliss I could kind of see the justification of it being on this list. But it's not.
The Stooges
4/5
This album rocks. The Iggy mix is way better. I remember hearing this as a teenager and being like, now this is rock.
Bob Dylan
3/5
I'm more of a fan of electric Bob. And I'm a sad sack of a shit but even this is too much. I get why people love it but it's not really for me.
Green Day
2/5
If I never hear any of these songs, I'll still have heard them too many times. I also hate how he sings. And I hate everything that came out of this.
Joy Division
5/5
Killer album. I was obsessed with this in high school and college. As I got older, I stopped listening at much but it still holds up super well.
Cream
3/5
Starts strong. Gets weak. 4/11 songs I like.
Travis
2/5
It's like Radiohead but without interesting ideas
The Notorious B.I.G.
2/5
It has like two good songs over 75 minutes. And even those songs are just okay.
Fats Domino
4/5
Classic stuff. I always enjoy hearing the old fat man
Isaac Hayes
3/5
It's good but I never really know when I'd throw this on.
Simon & Garfunkel
5/5
I feel like it should be a 4 but then you hear the Boxer and Cecilia and realize it really is a 5.
Earth, Wind & Fire
4/5
It's good. It's got hits and jams even if it is pretty dated.
Beatles
5/5
It's Abbey Road.
Big Brother & The Holding Company
4/5
Every time I hear this album, I'm always impressed with how good it is. I don't like a lot of 60's San Fran psychedelic music but this rocks way harder and has less twenty minutes of feedback as a solo. Even Janis I'm usually indifferent on but Piece of My Heart slaps as does the leadoff track.
Teenage Fanclub
3/5
It's not bad. Better than Britpop which is basically unlistenable. At least they sing well.
Public Enemy
3/5
Of their albums, this is the best. I'm still not a huge fan and I find it weird I've gotten all of their albums before other more represented groups. That being said, seems like less annoying scratch sounds and flavor flav make for a more timeless sound. Everything else sounded so dated but maybe that's what made it cool to begin with.
The Go-Betweens
4/5
I like this album, it's really just an okay album though. Real Estate pretty much based their whole thing on this. Good stuff
Stevie Wonder
3/5
I just am not a Stevie fan. I like some of the individual songs but cohesively, it's too long. I'm also realizing I think this is why I don't really like new Kendrick.
David Bowie
4/5
I like this album a lot and I listen to it a lot but the Eno side gets a little long.
Hookworms
3/5
Not a bad album. I would've liked some more inclusions of albums that came out ten years before this that sounded pretty damn close to it. But they wanted to take the safe, euro centric approach. Would I listen to again? Maybe. Doubtful.
The Who
3/5
Honestly, this record never really caught my attention. It always seemed like a bunch of outtakes.
Emmylou Harris
2/5
Really pretty pointless album. Unless you were like a middle aged librarian twenty five years ago, who cares about this? So many better albums could've been here instead of this. Way too many of these older, late albums. They should've gotten someone who wasn't seventy to help with this list
The Killers
4/5
First side is all great hits. Still all in heavy rotation on the radio. Second side is all eh
The White Stripes
3/5
This pales in comparison to elephant. This is when I stopped liking the band and when they got too commercial. A precursor to solo Jack White which pretty much sucks
Grateful Dead
1/5
I honestly can't think of a less essential album than this. It sucked for every second.
Radiohead
5/5
I love this album. I don't know what there's to not like. People just want to act like they're better than everyone because it's really good. Every time I listen to this album, I listen to it in it's entirety.
The Beta Band
3/5
Mediocrity reigns
Pink Floyd
4/5
Great album, almost a 5. I think Animals and Meddle might be better though
The Beach Boys
4/5
You know, it's good but I really don't get the fawning over it. Maybe when it came out, there was something super radical about it but it really sounds like a lot of other wall of sound stuff, which I do like. The album tracks are sort of bland and not catchy. I also never understood the hate Mike Love got as he could reel in Brian Wilson and keep him focused.
Leftfield
4/5
Not bad. Feels like you're in the matrix.
Randy Newman
2/5
This just sucks
Ms. Dynamite
2/5
Extremely forgettable
Al Green
4/5
Good album even if most of the album tracks sound similar. It's a good sound to sound like though. It's a 3.5 but I'll round up
The Specials
3/5
I mean it's a good ska album. Perhaps the only good one
The Temptations
3/5
It's good but not great
Lana Del Rey
2/5
This was extremely boring. Is this music for people who think saying damn is extremely daring? Is this why Gen Z is the least interesting generation?
The Prodigy
4/5
I'm torn if I wanna give this a 5. I never listened to them seriously before and this ruled. I'll come back to this.
Johnny Cash
5/5
It's really good. Songs about prison, crime, dying, and retribution.
Kanye West
4/5
The skits bog it down, which is why Graduation is superior. Kanye really is the best at this though.
Spiritualized
3/5
I thought it was pretty good. It's a little boring but honestly, pretty great background music.
The Cars
5/5
I mean, it rules
Common
3/5
Honestly, this is proto Kendrick. It should have more of a following. That being said, it's when I kinda stopped caring about him.
Santana
4/5
Actually pretty solid album. I hadn't listened to this in awhile because I've moved away from classic rock but actually it's a good album
Sam Cooke
5/5
It's the best he ever sounded and what I want a party or show to be
Little Richard
4/5
Classic stuff even if it is a little reductive
Dr. John
4/5
Super weird album. Liked it a lot more than I expected
Dennis Wilson
3/5
I never really got this album. It's not as good as a real beach boys but sounds like it but is just kinda there. Eh not for me
Fleetwood Mac
5/5
This is an incredible album
Sister Sledge
4/5
Solid party album. A little slow at parts but still fun
Aretha Franklin
4/5
I mean, it's hard to rate this when it's permeated through almost every facet of culture.
Frank Black
4/5
I was not expecting to like this album as I don't like punk rock, only somewhat like the Pixies, don't like long drawn out albums that go nowhere, and don't like a lot of 90's music. This was surprisingly good. I might even throw this on sometime.
David Bowie
4/5
David Bowie is really cool. Listening to his full discography it's pretty incredible how about every two years he could have a totally different sound that was still extremely popular. This is what I consider his first real album and I was mostly indifferent on it for a long time but listening again, it's really good.
The Lemonheads
3/5
It's just okay. Nothing really special
Cat Stevens
4/5
It's a really good album. The highs are high and the other tracks are good, if forgettable.
Moby
5/5
I get that it's a little dated sounding now and it was in so, so many commercials but this album rules. It's possibly the best sequenced album of all time. Starts real hype and then gets darker and more moody.
The Cult
2/5
Kinda dumb album. It's not that bad but it doesn't really do anything.
The Rolling Stones
4/5
Good album. Some people love it and say it's their best but I disagree. I think it's good but there's better.
Gang Of Four
5/5
When I first heard this at 14, I was blown away. The lyrics are so cutting, the music is so stark, it's pissed off about the system and it points out flaws. This is probably the only punk album I like.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
2/5
Extremely mediocre pick
XTC
4/5
Better album than XTC should be making. A lot of it sounds like John Lennon during Revolver but it's actually pretty okay.
Iggy Pop
4/5
I honestly forgot how good this album is. It's more aggressive than the Idiot, which is the album I usually gravitate towards, but this really works. It has enough Bowie to be different with enough Iggy to be a showpiece for him. The band is tight and there's actual pop songs.
Kings of Leon
2/5
It's still strange to me that this was so popular. It was bland then and it's bland now. The fact that this band has multiple albums on this list is a real head scratcher as they've mostly been forgotten as their music is very forgettable.
Mercury Rev
4/5
I mean, it sounds like the Soft Bulletin. I had never listened to this and was expecting something totally different. Enjoyed it.
Alice In Chains
3/5
I thought this was much later in the 90s than 92. It's not really my style and if it was about twenty minutes shorter, I probably would have liked it more.
Kid Rock
1/5
The only way I could enjoy this is if part of my frontal lobe was removed.
ABBA
4/5
Weird fun album. It sounds paranoid and it actually has lots of synth pop and new wave sounds underneath. I'd come back to this
LTJ Bukem
4/5
I like this kind of music, but I did listen to the Youtube version which might be different.
The Who
3/5
This must have been a big deal when it came out for some reason but whatever it was, it's not a big deal anymore.
Skepta
2/5
When you hear one track on a Gorillaz album it's kinda fun. A whole album? Gets old fast.
Van Morrison
3/5
Honestly, I like his other stuff much better. His next like 3 or 4 albums are all leagues better.
MGMT
4/5
Half of this album is still popular fifteen/twenty years later. I was so into this album when it came out. It's not a fully great album but the tracks that are popular are great.
Pulp
2/5
Pretty mediocre stuff
Echo And The Bunnymen
3/5
It's better than it should be. The Killing Moon is a great song and the lead off track is pretty good. The rest is moody and good for a fall afternoon.
Coldcut
4/5
Honestly, pretty cool album. This is why I enjoy this list despite the excessive amount of mediocrity you occasionally find something like this that isn't being covered like everything else. Had to listen on Youtube since it's not on Spotify but I added a couple tracks to my Party Playlist on YT.
The Stone Roses
4/5
This is a good album but it's definitely overhyped. I wanna be adored is great but it peters out towards the end of the album.
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
1/5
I hate this
Queen Latifah
3/5
Honestly, way better than I was expecting. I feel like this holds up better than Run DMC, Public Enemy, and NWA. Sure it runs on too long like everything else but the beats were better, NO SKITS!!!!!!!!!, no unnecessary whining hype men. I feel like this could actually have a better retrospective.
Bill Evans Trio
4/5
Really just a terrific album. They sound so tight and unique. This was probably pretty wild when it came out. It's both stripped down and full. The drums almost disappear or melt into the piano and bass. I don't see what's not to like.
AC/DC
2/5
I mean, every song sounds pretty much exactly the same. I also don't really like how this sounds. It's fine. It's not grating or upsetting like metal music. Mostly I just find this lame and bland.
Big Star
4/5
Honestly shocked by the low reviews and the amount of people who haven't heard of Big Star. I thought the secret was out on them. Admittedly, this is not my favorite by them though. I think their two earlier albums are better though.
Gram Parsons
4/5
I'm surprised so many people hate this. I honestly don't think people are listening which is so weird to voluntarily decide to listen to 1001 albums and then just dismiss an entire genre. This is a good album. I listen to this a lot. It deserves a spot here more than a Deep Purple live album. People dismissing this out of hand is pathetic.
Queen
3/5
Better album than I expected, I think I just don't like Freddie Mercury's voice honestly. Best song: She Makes Me
Motörhead
2/5
It's funny that people say everything sounds the same now when this band is still popular. There's barely any difference between songs. I don't get it. It's fine for about 180 seconds and then it's really boring.
The Style Council
2/5
I only knew one song off their prior EP and I liked it. My friend had been telling me they suck and I was like, do they? I like that song. And then I listened to this and was like, wow they do indeed suck.
CHIC
3/5
good dance album
Def Leppard
4/5
This is one of those bands and albums that I always think I'll hate and then it's actually pretty good. It's just really catchy rock music without all the stupidity of hair metal.
Sheryl Crow
3/5
Better album than I was expecting. Doesn't need to be on this list by any means but it's totally fine.
Snoop Dogg
4/5
This was way better than I was expecting. This might be the best West Coast rap album of the 90s. I'm honestly surprised how much I liked it as 90s rap just does not do it for me.
Jeff Buckley
3/5
I'd rather listen to The Bends
The B-52's
4/5
It's a fun album. It belongs on this list.
Joanna Newsom
3/5
This is a weird album. I've been putting it off for over a decade now because it's not really my jam but I'm glad I listened to it once. I don't think I'll be listening to it again anytime soon especially since it's not on Spotify.
Buddy Holly & The Crickets
4/5
It's classic but they still hadn't really figured out what an album is yet.
Animal Collective
5/5
This is a great album and it being ranked lower than THREE KINGS OF LEON ALBUMS IS DISGUSTING. KOL shouldn't be on this list at all and AC could easily have 2 other albums on here. This is a unique piece of music. Sorry it's not the most formulaic thing out there and actually has ideas.
SZA
2/5
Why was this album popular? It's devoid of hooks or memorable lines or anything that could be considered interesting. It just is.
T. Rex
3/5
It's a good album but Electric Warrior already really covers this ground and has a massive single.
Fatboy Slim
3/5
It isn't bad. It's of it's time. The hits are good and the rest are fine.
Alice Cooper
3/5
Yeah it's not bad. Exactly what you think it'll be. 70's "hard" rock with a pop edge. The Jet Song caught me out of nowhere which is funny because my friend that loves Alice Cooper and says it was the best live show he ever saw hates anything jazz related.
Thundercat
4/5
I love thundercat and yacht rock
LCD Soundsystem
4/5
I have a love hate relationship with this band. People love them too much. They're good but I hate how pretentious they are. It is fun at a party sometimes. All My Friends was my anthem in college though.
Bad Brains
3/5
It ends up being less horrible than you think
The Mamas & The Papas
4/5
It's a little dated but I listen to this band all the time because the songs are extremely catchy, the harmonies are cool, and it's usually a crowd pleaser.
Hot Chip
4/5
Hot Chip is just a good band. It's too bad they picked this album instead of one of their earlier ones that have some of their certified bangers on them. It's still a catchy album though.
Duke Ellington
5/5
It's Duke Ellington. Ya gotta respect it.
Run-D.M.C.
2/5
I just don't think I like 80's or 90's rap at all. It's very repetitive but not in an interesting way. And it's hard to buy into the raps that are mostly just boasting about how great they are but are they? The only thing that could make this worse would be Aerosmith
John Grant
4/5
I don't know how I missed this album when it came out. It sounds really good. This is my vibe. I'll be coming back to this. Not music you play for other people but good solo time music.
Deep Purple
3/5
It's totally fine. I just resent how much they're on this list instead of better or more unique things.
Cornershop
4/5
Would I come back to this? Yes. Never really listened to them or really heard anybody talk about them but I liked it. A little too long, as everything in the CD era is though it has a groove and you can just let it play out
Justice
3/5
I was never that into this album. I think it's fine but honestly would just so much rather listen to Daft Punk.
Steely Dan
2/5
I just don't really like SD
Pixies
3/5
It's a fine album. I don't feel like it breaks any real new grounds and considering they have two other albums plus a solo album, this probably could have been left off.
The Residents
3/5
It's weird, experimental noise
Pet Shop Boys
4/5
I really like this album. I need to remember to come back to it. PSB are good.
The Smashing Pumpkins
5/5
This album went hard.
Derek & The Dominos
4/5
This is pretty much all the Eric Clapton you need.
Massive Attack
5/5
An infinitely relistenable album. 10/10 would recommend
Roni Size
3/5
This really was way too long
Curtis Mayfield
5/5
This is one of those albums that every time I hear, I think "wow what a great album"
Django Django
3/5
File this under "indie rock groups white girls like" but as far as that goes, really not bad.
The Dandy Warhols
4/5
I was not expecting this album to be this good.
The Rolling Stones
5/5
They really become the Stones here. It's a real classic album
CHIC
3/5
Not as good as the other chic album on this list
The Associates
4/5
This shit rules
Beach House
5/5
This is one of my favorite albums by one of my favorite bands. I listen to this endlessly and I will to the day I die.
Stan Getz
4/5
I mean, it's really good but could you identify any of the songs besides girl from Ipanema? That's one of my favorite songs but this is just a good vibe
Barry Adamson
4/5
There's way too much Nick Cave representation on this list. He just won't go away for someone I find pretty mediocre or just not to my liking. This was good though. Weird and different.
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
2/5
This shit sucks
Siouxsie And The Banshees
3/5
Definitely top heavy. They aren't great with sustaining a full album but it's still good.
The Soft Boys
3/5
Not for me
Small Faces
2/5
Blah
Arcade Fire
3/5
The long boring middle section drags this down from a 4 to a 3. This album has always been weird to me because I don't want to like it but it has some good songs on there. It did come out during a time in my life that resonated a lot though.
Bob Dylan
5/5
This is probably my favorite Dylan album. It's just really weird and sounds very unique.
Malcolm McLaren
4/5
This made me wonder if Person Pitch was on this list and it sadly isn't. I like weird mash up stuff like this.
Jungle Brothers
4/5
Just when I think I'm over Hip-Hop, something like this comes up and really surprises me. It is crazy that nobody really talks about this album because it is way ahead of it's time. This holds up so much better than other records. If this was on Spotify, it would enter heavy rotation.
Eagles
3/5
Is this really in the running for greatest album? It has one good side and then just duds except Victim for Love. Nah. It's just a fine album.
Janelle Monáe
4/5
I remember when this came out and I never really got into outside of the song Oh Maker. But coming back to it now, it's better and has more range. I wrote it off as an R&B album but it's more than just that.
The Last Shadow Puppets
3/5
It's a very whatever album. I personally don't really like the Artic Monkeys so this does nothing for me except wonder why there's so much of this on here.
Pulp
3/5
Common People is a great song. The rest is just okay.
Nick Drake
5/5
Just an excellent album from an unheralded excellent artist
John Lee Hooker
3/5
They should have picked an earlier album by JLH and put Strong Persuader by Robert Cray and something by Stevie Ray Vaughn instead. Like this is fine good stuff but there's more essential stuff left off
Carpenters
3/5
It's got a few moments but then just like over stays it's welcome
Jethro Tull
3/5
This was my dad's favorite album. It's not bad. They get an overly bad rap but they were pretty influential and different for their time. As all fads go, they sound so much of their time.
N.E.R.D
2/5
Not a very good album
Mudhoney
3/5
Yeah it's not bad. Prob won't be playing again but can handle hearing it in public
Brian Wilson
3/5
It's weird that this album still exists on this list since they released actual Smile. This sounds good but he clearly sounds so much older than on the original sessions. I think people love Brian Wilson a little too much personally.
Beck
4/5
Honestly, pretty cool album. Beck is extremely underrated even if he is popular. He has his own distinct voice that gets expressed in different genres. Does this sound more commercial? Yeah but it's driving the market to be more diverse.
Orange Juice
4/5
This is a good album. I love the title track, been in heavy rotation for me for years, but the rest is surprisingly varied and good. It's not just lame new wave or filler.
Bill Callahan
4/5
This is an excellent album. It kinda runs it's course 3/4 of the way through but still, every time I come back to this album I'm overwhelmed.
Pearl Jam
4/5
In high school in 2008, I had to interview the girls running coach and she said Pearl Jam was her favorite band and I thought it was funny.
Harry Nilsson
4/5
A good weird album. I bought this for a dime on vinyl years ago and it's still strange
Television
4/5
I love the title track. The rest is pretty good.
The Specials
3/5
It's just okay
Fleetwood Mac
5/5
No review needed
Dolly Parton
3/5
I'm kind of whatever on this
The Dictators
4/5
Honestly pretty good album. I used to like this early, shitty, glam rock bands. This to me is more creative than a lot of other albums on here. A little bit goes a long way but it's worth noting
Radiohead
4/5
It's not my favorite by them
The Mothers Of Invention
1/5
I get that the point was to annoy you but if i wanted to laugh, I'd follow him into the bathroom
The Kinks
5/5
An undeniable, stone cold classic
Richard Hawley
4/5
What a surprising find. I had never heard of this before or even seen it around. I don't like Brit Pop but this is not that. Very nice.
Talking Heads
4/5
Pretty uneven record. Some exceptional songs and then just some real junk
Michael Jackson
4/5
Let's be real, it's 4 stars
Ian Dury
2/5
This is a good example of music I dislike
Beatles
5/5
The only double album that ever needed to exist and even then, it's only 75% great.
Dirty Projectors
4/5
This album rules. This is what college for me sounded like
Judas Priest
2/5
Pretty boring
Aimee Mann
2/5
It's just a not very interesting album and way too long
Jimmy Smith
4/5
solid jazz album
Bad Company
3/5
yeah i mean, it's fine. There's absolutely zero reasons why it should be essential listening. It's just run of the mill 70's rock. They really should have thought deeper about this.
LL Cool J
3/5
Better than almost all other 80-90's rap but is still way too long. Shave off 20 minutes and this is a SCC.
Bob Dylan
4/5
I am not totally sold on Bob. I like some one off albums of his that tend to be a little later. This must have been pretty radical at the time though.
Tom Waits
5/5
Tom Waits can be overrated at times but this is a genius album
2/5
The good news is this is on Spotify unlike previous reviews mentioned. That about ends the good news.
Barry Adamson
2/5
How in the world does this guy have two fake soundtracks on this list? Neither are super interesting. There is so much quality music left off and this guy gets two albums.
5/5
I remember getting this for my birthday one year and being just blown away by the album tracks. I thought it was just the coolest, most edgy thing out there. This is one of the few things I have "nostalgia" for but it really just is a rocking good album.
Peter Gabriel
4/5
Killer album. I erroneously purchased the German version on vinyl a number of years ago and I thought I was having a stroke. It sounds cool, dark, and edgy.
Echo And The Bunnymen
3/5
It's just okay
David Bowie
3/5
It's a totally fine late period Bowie album. It's importance is downgraded by Blackstar which is a better album
Raekwon
4/5
Wu Tang forever
The Everly Brothers
3/5
This period is the rare exception when greatest hits will suffice. The album hasn't really come into it's full potential yet
Tortoise
4/5
An interesting listen. I'd come back to it
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
3/5
I want to rate this album higher but it's just really okay
Jane's Addiction
4/5
Super good album. Perry seems like a nightmare to work with but from a musical standpoint, this rocks.
Janis Joplin
4/5
It's very of it's time and now sounds dated but I'm sure this was pretty hot stuff when it came out. It does get a little boring though.
Neil Young
5/5
Incredible album, great guitar work, cool songs
The KLF
4/5
I like this kind of music
Black Sabbath
5/5
I mean, is it overplayed? sure. Does it rock? absolutely. The second half shows they're more than just singles.
Can
2/5
It starts off making you think, wait why do people hate Can? And then it fully becomes Can. Partially like listening to the sounds of House on Haunted Hill and partially just insane jamming. I never really got Can.
Os Mutantes
4/5
This is a very cool, fun album. It doesn't even seem real considering it's time.
Shuggie Otis
3/5
It's good but not great
The Pogues
3/5
Would I want to live in a pub and conspire with the IRA? Yes. Absolutely. Do I want to listen to this all the time? Not so much. It's in theory good but I just can't see myself ever really pulling this out.
Sleater-Kinney
3/5
Not really my favorite kind of music but the album got better after the first track
50 Cent
3/5
If this was 30 minutes shorter, it would be probably 4 stars. It just runs on for so long without much variety.
Paul Weller
2/5
If you think the Kings of Leon are edgy, wait till you get a load of this
Taylor Swift
2/5
Extremely mediocre and repetitive. I had heard these songs many times before and didn't realize that it was Taylor Swift. Also, there's like one theme in this album and it's "I'm too crazy for this world and that's why you can't love me." Well maybe do something about it then. This falls into my genre of people like this to fit in as opposed to actually liking it, just like the Grateful Dead currently. Just have the community and drop the cult of personality. This is a lot of sophomore year drama that really only exists because people watch too much reality TV and think it's normal to always be in an argument whereas that's extremely aberrant behavior. Just exist, be thankful for what you have, love each other, and be happy.
Motörhead
2/5
This is a very weak sounding live album. Probably the definition of unessential.
Happy Mondays
4/5
Good stuff
Prefab Sprout
4/5
These off beat, weird albums are why I like this list. This is a cool album that you think sounds like lots of other things but can't say what. There's a lot going on here. This is music for adults.
Ryan Adams
3/5
Sometimes he sounds like Gram Parsons, sometimes he sounds like Big Star, but mostly he's just there. It's not bad but this album is also way too long.
Youssou N'Dour
4/5
These are the kind of albums I hoped to be discovering on this list
Gil Scott-Heron
4/5
Very cool
Joni Mitchell
2/5
I don't like Joni
Stevie Wonder
3/5
Stevie sure has his sound
Beyoncé
2/5
People like this? It's very boring
Fugazi
3/5
Not really my bag
Super Furry Animals
3/5
Not bad. Early indie sound. Of Montreal really took a lot from this album. It's pretty dated sounding now though.
The Who
4/5
I used to love the who and honestly, this shit holds up
Cheap Trick
3/5
Despite my feelings that live albums are cop outs, this rocks
Destiny's Child
2/5
The last track of them just saying thank you made me really feel like that since I was so happy this boring mess was over.
Heaven 17
3/5
Good early New Wave. People think there was much more of this than there really was, especially in 81. It doesn't fully hold up and there may be too much of it on this list but I like it more than the 35 Madchester albums.
Les Rythmes Digitales
3/5
You know, I didn't think it was that bad. There's too much of this on here but I don't mind it.
Don McLean
3/5
It's commercial Dylan and Cohen. If I never heard the title track again, that would be fine with me. Actually, it seems to have actually mostly gone away which is nice.
Alanis Morissette
3/5
I mean, I don't really like this music but it has had insane staying power so there's something to be said about that. It's really not my bag though
The Vines
3/5
Highly mediocre
Metallica
4/5
I don't like metal but they rock pretty hard
Wilco
3/5
I like Wilco enough but they are pretty pedestrian
OutKast
4/5
Aquemini is a better album, I've always felt. This was their more commercial breakthrough and it's still good but it lacks some of the fun I feel like their previous album (that isn't on this list for some odd reason when there's like 40 90's euro dance albums)
10cc
2/5
Just not very good. Weird enough, but I like Godley and Creme better
Ryan Adams
3/5
Pretty good album. Fairly somber. A little too long.
Madonna
2/5
This is not that good of an album. I can just listen to Moby instead and actually be fulfilled.
Lloyd Cole And The Commotions
2/5
There are so many more deserving albums than this. It's fine but I just finished it and remember nothing. If it's voted the 21st best album of the year than there's 20 more deserving albums from that year alone that deserve this more.
2/5
I never understood this band. It actually fills me with dread every time I hear it. His voice is so irritating and never goes away. And the songs are boring
Iron Butterfly
2/5
I mean, the first half is literally just waiting for the moment of rock
This is why everyone in my generation is like, "U2 sucks." and honestly? I'm right there with them. This is I guess could be argued as their last "good" album but it's just so blase.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo
4/5
It's really good. Would I listen to this all the time? Probably not but I'll through it on sometimes
k.d. lang
3/5
Good late period country album. I'm finding I like this kind of roots throwback country with every album I hear of it. Is it great and essential? No. But it is fun and different. This whole genre seems to have disappeared and is written off as commercial drivel but really the songs are pretty good.
Metallica
1/5
TWO HOURS OF THIS NONSENSE!!!!!! AND RIDE THE LIGHTING ISN'T EVEN ON THIS LIST. This is terrible. These songs were actively worse both live and with this ridiculous string section. I honestly cannot fathom a single time in my life I will ever want to hear this ever again.
The Charlatans
2/5
Britpop sucks. C-Tier Britpop is even worse.
Death In Vegas
2/5
Pretty boring, unessential stuff
Sonic Youth
3/5
I like their stuff from earlier than this more, or at least I listen to it more. This was pretty good but it seemed too long and repetitive. It's still good though. I wouldn't complain if someone put it on.
Abdullah Ibrahim
3/5
This is certainly jazz
Throwing Muses
4/5
Wow I really wish this was on Spotify or anywhere. Had to find a rip on youtube of the whole album as each song wasn't even available. A shame since this is an awesome album. I had never heard of them before but this is exactly why I wanted to do this list. Enough live albums. More interesting underground music.
OutKast
3/5
Alright, hopefully I won't be getting another 2 hour plus album for awhile. It's just way too long for any artist outside of a few greats. That said, Speakerboxxx was good and The Love Below is just okay. Big Boi is underappreciated vastly. I listened to this is two sittings and the difference between the two is stark.
Eurythmics
3/5
Better than it should be but Touch is a better album that should be here instead.
Guns N' Roses
2/5
This shit sucks major ass
Jazmine Sullivan
3/5
It's short, which was nice. Other than that, there were like a million things that sounded like this that came out around then. Wasn't really into this style. This is them trying to be more hip after adding a bunch of nonsense for the 21st century. We're a quarter of the way through it and these editors are still dinosaurs.
Brian Eno
4/5
I love this kinda weird stuff that's like, what is this? Seems like everyone is anti Eno these days for unknown reasons. The man is a genius
Madness
3/5
If this came out when I was in high school, this probably would have been my personality. It's totally fine. I'll never listen to it again though.
Grateful Dead
3/5
The definition of bland. I think their days are ultimately numbered as being any sort of relevant.
Herbie Hancock
4/5
I mean, the first half couldn't be any better. The second half is good to great
The Offspring
2/5
At least they only have one album on this list. Self Esteem was an okay song. The rest were thankfully at least fairly short.
The Byrds
3/5
It's probably the best 60's psych folk album there is. That being said, it's just okay.
The Doors
4/5
I used to be very, very into the Doors. I thought they were so cool. But then I became 13. So it's been awhile since I've sat down and really listened to them. They are unique and pretty edgy for their time. This album is pretty cool.
The Beach Boys
4/5
This is actually my favorite Beach Boys album. I think Pets Sounds is overrated. I think Smile is good but goes on too long. This is just weird enough and unpopular enough that besides a greatest hits of their early stuff, really hits. That being said, it's not my favorite album of all time.
Jean-Michel Jarre
4/5
Really good stuff
Cocteau Twins
5/5
Hearing this for the first time at 14 was pretty crazy. It still holds up, probably because the production is pristine. Who doesn't feel like garbled sad English sometimes? As if the metalheads who hate this actually know what's being said.
The Thrills
3/5
It really is the unimaginative lips
Pavement
5/5
This album gets better with age.
The Replacements
4/5
Insane that this is the only Replacements album on this list. Great album and all but they have even more. It's just really bizarre considering they had a 1001 slots and then filled them with 800 mediocre albums by mediocre bands.
Soul II Soul
3/5
It's not bad. Honestly, you could throw this on in the background while doing stuff and have a great time.
Faust
5/5
This album rules. Every time I've come back to it, I'm like wow I need to listen to this more. It really has everything you want in Krautrock without getting too out there.
Ramones
5/5
I honestly don't even think this is punk. Or at least what most people think of punk. It's less annoying. It's just more straightforward rock with loud guitars and sometimes that's all you need. Another group I'm shocked only has one album on this list as Rocket to Russia isn't bad either.
David Bowie
5/5
This is my kinda album. I do wish Scary Monsters was on this list though
Bee Gees
3/5
I mean, I get why people are confused not knowing any other Bee Gees' music but it's fine.
Frank Sinatra
2/5
Don't get me wrong, I love Ole Blue Eyes but this is hardly an album. They hadn't really perfected what an album should be yet and they would only really focus on singles, which is really where he shines. Now if when this came out and I was sitting at Mr. Kelly's listening to this, I'm sure I would've spilled my gin martini.
Bonnie Raitt
3/5
The definition of fine
Peter Gabriel
3/5
I love PG but this album is pretty varied
Drive Like Jehu
3/5
I've always heard people love this band but I don't like this kind of music.
Fiona Apple
4/5
I liked this a lot more than I was expecting. It's more cabaret style which turns out, I like.
Everything But The Girl
2/5
This was really boring. How many albums that are exactly like this are going to be on this list? I've always said the 90's had the worst music and this is just confirming that.
The Sonics
5/5
This album rocks. If you don't like early garage rock, you suck. Do yourself a favor and listen to all of Nuggets.
Incubus
1/5
This shit sucks. It's not remotely good. They have enough of this garbage on here and if the excuse is, oh it was a product of it's time, then why isn't the backstreet boys on this? It's just really dumb and I feel like this is the 5th shitty nu metal album I've gotten. Honestly, it's like C-Tier nu metal.
Orbital
4/5
I liked it
Supertramp
3/5
When I was either 10 or 12, I really liked Supertramp. I bought this from the library on vinyl for about a dime and then pretty quickly realized, not all classic rock albums are Led Zeppelin IV. I then lugged this album around for about twenty years until selling it for probably about a dime. It has a few good songs. Honestly, Breakfast in America is a better album as far as hits go. I still have some shame about owning this as I've grown up. I did date a very lovely girl that really liked Supertramp and I find it very funny that she put them on her top bands list.
4/5
The Kinks are a great band. They have a cool sound here. It does kinda overstay it's welcome after a certain point where it's like, "alright that's the Kinks."
JAY Z
4/5
Kanye has better flow. That being said, the production on this is pretty great. No more just scratching or simple beats. Set the stage for a lot of what was to come.
David Bowie
3/5
A mediocre album with a good cover by a great artist
Femi Kuti
4/5
It's very good but it's a very long album. There isn't that much variety in the style. Shave off 25 minutes and this is a 5 star.
Stereo MC's
2/5
This is barely an album. There's zero reason why this should be on this list. It has one really good song and then 50 minutes of music that is extremely mediocre. The triphop stuff was almost okay but the range that Massive Attack is what makes them great.
The Divine Comedy
3/5
Waste of time on an extremely mediocre album
David Ackles
2/5
I was really excited to get an album from an artist I had really never heard of and seemingly nobody else had either. Wow. What a disappointment. This was not good.
Sly & The Family Stone
5/5
Man, what an album. I was honestly expecting 1001 albums like this. I'm about halfway through and I've had maybe 40 albums like this? Extremely good. It's been a few years since I listened to it all the way through and it holds up so well.
Elastica
4/5
Surprisingly good considering all the ratings. They rip off the right bands and keep on rocking
Rahul Dev Burman
3/5
Kinda cool album, also an extremely bizarre choice. There's probably a better example as well as a wider breadth of albums they could have used.
Syd Barrett
3/5
Started strong as a freak folk album but then it seemed like they ran out of ideas. The studio chatter was very distracting at the end and those songs were already pretty short, which I like.
Le Tigre
4/5
I've never really listened to them but I really enjoyed it. Different sound.
Iron Maiden
3/5
I mean it's fine. Jesus Christ Superstar is basically a better version of this
Supergrass
2/5
Extremely unessential
Joe Ely
4/5
Honestly, this is why I wanted to do this list. This album is really good. Good roots modern country. This is before "country" just became propaganda for morons. It's a going out album, it's a crying in your beer album.
The Kinks
3/5
Kind of an unremarkable Kinks album
Gary Numan
4/5
An excellent, influential album. I listen to this a lot and while there's better synth stuff that came out later, this is still a great fun album
Nitin Sawhney
2/5
At first I was wondering why the reviews were so overwhelmingly negative. It starts off as mostly a boring triphop album that doesn't pick up or go anywhere. And then it just gets annoying.
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
Look, I love the Boss. Do I want to give this a 5? Yeah. But there's a few songs that I don't really care for and some of my favorite songs of all time.
Michael Kiwanuka
4/5
What an unexpected treat. I've been complaining about how the selections from the 21st century have been so milquetoast and then this comes up. It totally slipped my radar when it came out but I'll throw this on. It's making the rotation for sure.
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
4/5
Way too long of an album. Anything that doesn't have the old masters should have been cut. I do like bluegrass though and there's not very much I've encountered anything like this on the list.
Paul Revere & The Raiders
4/5
Good 60's rock. I could see myself throwing this on occasionally. It's more of a 3.5
Machito
4/5
Good jazz album! I'll def come back to this
Mariah Carey
2/5
Pretty boring album. I liked the cover of The Beautiful Ones but mostly just because I like that song. This list could just use more Prince in general
The Sugarcubes
4/5
I don't really like Bjork solo but this is pretty good post wave stuff
Soft Machine
3/5
Was not expecting this to be so jazzy after the first prog song. That being said, I'll never listen to this again.
Caetano Veloso
4/5
Excellent
a-ha
4/5
Much more fun and poppy album than I was expecting. I thought it was going to be a one and done album but no, the deep cuts still slap.
Terence Trent D'Arby
2/5
The easiest 2 I've ever given.
Arcade Fire
4/5
Did this come out as an answer to the horrible emo scene that was dominating the suburbs at the time? Possibly. It felt like a direct message to me, even if the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. It was an easy answer to, "Oh if you don't like My Chemical Romance then what do you like?" Though Sufjan was and always will be better.
3/5
I never really cared for this album. It all kind of sounds the same. It's fine to come back to when listening to lists like this but I never really seek it out. I actually liked their album Back in the USA quite a bit more.
The Band
3/5
It has two all time bangers and then a sad, autumnal vibe the rest of the time. I like this album but it's just okay
Screaming Trees
3/5
An example of don't judge a book by it's cover. I thought this was going to be like death metal but it's more like Beatles does the 90s. I enjoyed this much more than I was expecting. Funny that people keep saying it's boring as I feel that way about so much music but I wouldn't exactly call this boring. Repetitive, I'll give.
Ministry
3/5
I'll never listen to it again but it's fine
Lynyrd Skynyrd
3/5
Sick of CCR being really good? Tired of thinking? Want to be an ignorant boob with a confederate flag? They're pronounced 'Leh-'Nérd 'Skin-'Nérd and they're extremely mediocre. They'll also be overplayed to death to give you the impression that you too should also not think.
Air
3/5
It's not bad. It's basically like background music.
Todd Rundgren
2/5
I just don't really like Todd Rundgren that much
Tina Turner
4/5
I love Tina Turner. This album has great tunes, great voice, great power. I don't get the hate.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
Not my favorite. It has it's moments but I think it's just okay.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
2/5
This is dumb
The Yardbirds
2/5
The Yardbirds are lame
Ananda Shankar
3/5
It wasn't bad but it took me several attempts to listen to it fully since it was kinda boring
Led Zeppelin
4/5
It's good. Too long as all double albums are.
Devendra Banhart
4/5
I've always liked this album. But I'm just a twee guy
Steely Dan
5/5
I really want to give this a 4 but like, it slaps
Oasis
2/5
Fifty minutes of draggy, boring music with terrible singing
The Allman Brothers Band
3/5
It's not an album I love, unlike some people. I think it's just okay. Probably better than okay as I guess it isn't as boring as I think it is.
Gene Clark
2/5
I thought it was very boring. I don't really care for the Byrds so this didn't really do anything for me. I went into it with an open mind as my Spotify recently suggested a Beatles cover by Gene Clark that I really enjoyed but this just sat there.
Astor Piazzolla
4/5
I'll come back to this album. It was pretty good. Very different.
Coldplay
3/5
It's Coldplay in all its early glory. It's not as bad as everyone dunks on. It's lamer Radiohead but better than most other lame Radiohead impersonators. And it's better than their modern form.
Fugees
3/5
It's good but let's be real, it's too long and it's pretty repetitive. The skits also age and slow down an already extremely long record.
The Undertones
3/5
This is some good rock and roll music. B-
Moby Grape
3/5
It's not bad but really the best Psych Rock songs were not sustainable for albums. A better choice would have been Nuggets but this list doesn't do compilations but then it runs into wanting to represent a certain sound. Either pick the best or leave it off entirely instead of picking the closest you can get with a full album.
Suzanne Vega
4/5
Today I learned I like Suzanne Vega. I think her voice pairs really well with the timbre of the music and the production quality. Honestly, might get more into her
Joan Baez
3/5
I like Joan fine. She's not my go to but I'm fine with hearing this every now and again.
Bebel Gilberto
4/5
I really liked this. It's definitely a vibe but I'm glad I'm now aware of this so I can lean into this vibe. I started this to learn about new music and artists that actually have unique or just different styles and this hits that.
Primal Scream
4/5
I enjoyed this far more than I was expecting. I've never really liked Primal Scream that much and this was a nice change.
Aerosmith
3/5
It starts strong with two bangers but then peters out
Siouxsie And The Banshees
4/5
I've never been a huge Siouxsie fan like some people I've known but it is really good.
The Shamen
2/5
Another album that won't end after never getting started. So boring. Who asked for this?
3/5
I thought I would either like or hate this more than I did. It's honestly just more boring than anything. I imagine this is more influential than it appears as nothing else was really sounding like this at the time but better things came out 40 years after this that's left off.
Meat Puppets
5/5
This album rules. Fun tunes, weird music, bad band name
Sarah Vaughan
4/5
It represents this genre well and it's good. I probably won't be adding this to my heavy rotation but it's nice to know about. Good time capsule of a long, long gone Chicago. Back when Rush Street was swinging and thriving and not just the Viagra Triangle, upscale luxury stores, and yuppies with no clue how to take the L.
Mike Oldfield
3/5
It's good for the Exorcist bit and that's about it. I had bought this on vinyl once for a quarter, listened to it, and then gave it away. I don't know if this is essential listening.
