it just seems so fucking ordinary. Like, the album was made to appeal to suburban housewives that would consider it edgy. The song "England" is alright, but after the piano intro it just drones on for an eternity. Basic bitch-ass album.

on the first listen i thought it had a major drop-ff in the second half, but i listened again and its a special type of weird. kind of blends rap, country, hip hop, electronic...jarring at times but ahead of its time.
Really enjoyed this album. reminded me of Stereolab at various moments. This is the sort of thing I was hoping to get from this project; exposure to albums/artists I had never heard of.
I just can't take this guy seriously

started out very strong...by the end it just seemed very ordinary. alright, but should have been better.
solid 3. a few good songs (favorite is probably "Cavaleiro Do Cavalo Imaculado").
i feel like this album aged poorly, not in any sense other than it was sort of gimmicky even when it came out, and that the shtick sort of wore out. despite that, it does have a several bangers ("Friday Night", "Growing on Me") that keep it at a 3 for me.
every song is good...your classic five bagger.
it just seems so fucking ordinary. Like, the album was made to appeal to suburban housewives that would consider it edgy. The song "England" is alright, but after the piano intro it just drones on for an eternity. Basic bitch-ass album.
has a timeless charm to it...makes me feel classier than i actually am. Not necessarily something i would seek out, but enjoyable
a perfectly ordinary band. indistinguishable from other 70s groups like Cheap Trick or TRex. A couple of song highlights are "Hymn for the Dudes" and "I'm a Cadillac/El Camino Dolo Roso", but otherwise forgettable.
The first (folksy) half was Bob Dylan at his most nasally. if you are on the fence with regards to Dylan's singing, this acoustic set will firmly plant you in the "total bullshit" camp. And this is coming from a massive Dylan fan. I wasn't the biggest fan of the first half, but to be honest i've never been convinced that Dylan live was anything special (outside of the Rolling thunder Review tour) second (rock) half was better, but i guess ive always preferred Dylan's post "Like a Rolling Stone" stuff. Middle of the road album from a generational talent.
Even though all reports say Morrissey is a dick, i still like The Smiths, and this album is no exception. Best tracks are "The Headmaster Ritual" and "Barbarism Begins at Home", but generally just appeals to my soft spot for whiny white boy music. Also, the title track is really catchy but goddam Morrissey really lays it on thick with the vegetarianism, bold move to close the album with an anthem dedicated to dietary choices.
totally weird. i liked it
I mean its not a bad album, but i am so confused why it is on the list. I'm even more confused as to why there are three Dexys Midnight Runners albums on this list. they are forgettable at best.
a couple of alright songs, but not really my cup of tea.
Dusty Springfield is the sort of thing my mom would put on the radio when she would drag me around town on errands as a kid. It's just the kind of thing that speaks to me.
I'm surprised I've never listened to this album from front to back. It's a real masterpiece. Totally taken back by the segue into the second track, the conversation gave it a melancholy feel during the middle, and every song is a banger.
Pretty generic early 60s american rock. Not bad, but nothing spectacular
Nothing about this album stood out to me. Could have been cut in half and maybe it would have been a tighter/more enjoyable album. I like Prince, did not like this album
Didn't really do much for me
Radiohead's third best album. the only reason its not a 5 is because it sort of drones on in the middle...but there are a lot of bangers on this album.
A uniquely American album: a controversial country star goes to play a classic set in a prison. At times sort of silly, but a good listen for sure.
nothing really interesting about this album
Not a bad album that had some very interesting moments (see "Poughkeepsie"), but overall I wasn't taken by it. I think its the type of album I might really enjoy if I was in a different head-space, which sort of speaks to the subjective gamble each album on this list is. Everyday i get a new piece of art to experience, but it may have an overall esthetic that doesn't agree with the circumstances in my life. I don't know...maybe I would always be unimpressed with this album, but maybe in another life it would be great.
on the first listen i thought it had a major drop-ff in the second half, but i listened again and its a special type of weird. kind of blends rap, country, hip hop, electronic...jarring at times but ahead of its time.
This is a personal top 10 album for me. Right out of the gates she says "Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine"...holy shit. When this album is not good it's still good, and when it's good it's fucking great.
fuck the police
Surprised I've never listened to this album. Has a similar feel to other 90s pop bands like "Weezer" and "Presidents of the United States of America". A good rock album.
not terrible, but just not my thing.
not terrible background music with a sort of 'Massive Attack' vibe, though i question why it is considered an "essential" album.
kind of an interesting album. catchy at times, had good "early morning in the lab alone" vibes. had a tendency to drone on at times, but overall i liked it.
A few funky moments, but overall not really my thing.
Probably a more challenging velvet underground album, but not terrible on the second listen
There is a clear bias in this list towards british pop bands from the 80s, and I have to admit that I don't see the appeal. I know this band is Australian, but they are in the same vein as the other bands that just kind of suck (Dexy's Midnight Runners, Pet Shop Boys...the list is massive). Fuck this mediocre band.
I was so prepared to have a clever one word review that just said "no", but I actually enjoyed parts of this album. I mean, the cover of "America" was terrible, but it really had its moments.
I was not looking forward to this album because honestly Ian Curtis' voice gets on my nerves. I mean, when they are good they absolutely kick ass ("Love Will Tear Us Apart", "Interzone"), but I found it difficult to overcome his singing. It has no melody, and no coherence to the actual music. Surprisingly, I enjoyed this album despite his voice. It just rips. Best songs are "Twenty Four Hours" and "Isolation", though the whole album just has a brooding darkness that I am drawn to (though there are plenty of moments where Curtis' voice still gets on my nerves). Very good album.
liked it more than I was expecting to.
It seems like this would be right up my alley but I just couldn't get into it. "Human Cannonball" was alright, but as a whole wasn't taken by it.
I didn't expect much from this album, never been much of a Zappa guy, but I enjoyed it both times I listened to it. Still a bit much at times, but not terrible.
Have you ever wanted to listen to the most 90's rock/pop group ever? Kind of a Lemonheads vibe, alright but not great.
Was not expecting much from this album...it's just ZZ Top has always seemed like the most generic classic rock band of all time. Wasn't all that bad though, not something i would probably seek out again, but didn't hate it.
One of his best.
I can see how this album might not appeal to some people, but I just think its a masterpiece. Its so fucking dark, but has this ethereal undertone. Maybe its because I was listening to it during a time of great change in my life, but its makes the cut as a 5-star album in my humble opinion.
Listened to this album 3 times over the course of a week. I can't decide whether i love it or just find it easily forgettable as background noise. i think that my reaction to a lot of the jazz on this list is that (the good albums at least) i enjoy the atmosphere created as it plays in the background. this album has a cool darkness to it, i would probably listen to more Charles Mingus as a result.
Kinda weird…I dig it. Dog Eat Dog is a banger
Better than the other Marley album I’ve reviewed on this list, just a better overall experience for me. I’ve always been a sort of surface level BM fan, but his hits are great. Best song on this album I’ve never heard is “Turn Your Lights Down Low”
I was too young to be around for the grunge era, and the early 2000s were just dogshit for bands/good music. I think that Arcade Fire were one of the only bands worth listening to during this era. They had 3 really good albums, and Neon Bible really captures the exhaustion people had with nearly a decade of war following 9/11. Good album, good band.
not bad, no tracks that compare to "Sultans of Swing", plus Mark Knopfler drops the F-bomb...the (not fuck). cmon man
Not terrible, definitely a more interesting band than the Sex Pistols. Some echos of Joy Division. Favorite song is "Memories"
Probably their best album, but unfortunately the who suck.
I tried
meh, maybe if he wasn't such a cunt. I forgive it when listening to the smiths, but it is amplified here because the album is not spectacular.
A challenging album to listen to.
I like classic country but this guys voice is something else.
Melancholy throughout. Nico's unique voice and the folk foundation create a one of a kind experience. Approaches a '5', maybe could be if the mood is right.
Didn't hate it.
Classic 5 bagger from the man himself. EC gets a lot of hate because he is so heavily represented on this list, but his first three albums are all first ballot hall of famers.
Actually enjoyed it.
It was definitely a jazz album, i remember that much
Pleasantly surprised by this album. Had never heard of SAULT...really enjoyed it
I remember being so excited for this album to be released. There was a number you could call and it would play a preview of "This is the Call", I must have called that number 20 times. Whether its the ache of nostalgia, or an enduring legacy of a well crafted album, the Foo Fighters debut just speaks to me in a way that neither of their follow up albums ever did.
Had its moments but I preferred The Man Machine to this Kraftwerk album. The lead singers voice doesn't do it for me.
Didn't hate it. Used to love the song American Pie, sort of lost its magic after hearing it so many times. Was surprising to find out that Don McLean actually wrote more than one song during his life.
love me some classic country, but her voice was a bit much after a while
It's like this album's sole purpose in life was to ruin my morning.
Really enjoyed this album. reminded me of Stereolab at various moments. This is the sort of thing I was hoping to get from this project; exposure to albums/artists I had never heard of.
I used to love Sonic Youth, but have sort of grown weary of them over the pas few years...not sure why, probably just hearing the same shit over and over. Really enjoyed this album though. Has a rawness to it that maybe is what I loved about later albums (Dirty, specifically).
Some interesting moments on this album that don't seem very "Bowie-esque". Specifically the songs Warszawa, Weeping Wall and Subterraneans. Can't say its on the level of Ziggy Stardust, but very few albums are.
I just can't take this guy seriously
I fulfilled my obligation to listen to this album
The least interesting pop album I’ve ever been forced to endure
An album that seems to perfectly occupy a specific moment in time.
Pretty solid album. Not in the same ballpark as Rumours but still good. The song "Tusk" is so good it pushed it to a 4 for me.
enjoyed it more than i thought i would
Really enjoyed it. Such a 90's feel to this album
A remarkably forgettable britpop album
