Album Summary

Live Through This is the second studio album by American alternative rock band Hole, released on April 12, 1994, by DGC Records. Recorded in late 1993, it departed from the band's unpolished hardcore aesthetics to more refined melodies and song structure. Frontwoman Courtney Love said that she wanted the record to be "shocking to the people who think that we don't have a soft edge", but maintain a harsh sensibility. The album was produced by Sean Slade and Paul Q. Kolderie and mixed by Scott Litt and J Mascis. The lyrics and packaging reflect Love's thematic preoccupations with beauty, and motifs of milk, motherhood, anti-elitism, and violence against women, while Love derived the album title from a quote in Gone with the Wind (1939). Live Through This was met with critical acclaim, and charted in nine countries before going multi-platinum in the US in December 1994. Despite this, it was also the subject of some public discussion regarding unsubstantiated rumors that Love's husband, Kurt Cobain—who died by suicide one week before the album's release—helped ghostwrite the album. This claim has been disputed by the band members, producers, as well as music biographers, though the band confirmed that Cobain sang additional backing vocals on two tracks during a visit to the studio. This is also the band's only album to feature bassist Kristen Pfaff, and the final album to be released during her lifetime, as she died two months after the album's release. In critical circles, Live Through This is considered a contemporary classic, and was included in Rolling Stone's 2020 updated list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time at number 106. It has also been featured on the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die and on NME's The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list, where it ranked at the 84. As of 2010, it has sold over 1.6 million copies in the US.

Stop yelling at me please. I didn’t do anything.

I LOVE FEMALE RAGE

"I FUCKING LOVE HOOOOOOOLLLLLLEEEEEE" - me if i was a whac-a-mole but also as a lover of this band God I don't know, this album is just so fucking iconic. From the cover, to Courtney Love's voice, to the heaviness of the lyrics. I cannot put into words how relatable and personal this album is to me. I first listened to this album around the same time I was getting really into punk/riot grrrl music. I know this is more grunge than either of those things, but to me it brings out the same feeling. Anger is a difficult emotion for me, it's hard to express and I don't like being angry. But this album is an incredible outlet and makes me feel so empowered especially as a femme person. Fun fact, the song Olympia was Courtney Love mocking the Riot Grrrl scene lmfao. Her and Kathleen Hanna((le tigre)(bikini kill)) had some serious BEEF. I know that Courtney Love is a controversial character, and I definitely have some feelings about her... all I'll say is that I respect that she spoke up about Harvey Weinstein before it was public knowledge that he was the evil person we know him to be now. But anyway, this is about HOLE and I just love this band a lot. One of my favorite album covers ever!! And definitely in my top 50 albums of all time. Maybe even top 20??? Listened to this on my CD player :)) <3Doll Parts, Miss World, Asking For It, Violet, Olympia, Plump<3

LOVED. i love women yelling. courtney love slays

Pretty damn good honestly

Ahh, I love it when women scream. There are a ton of great female-fronted punk projects out there and this one is a certified classic for a reason. It's more post-hardcore and grunge than I remember, but it gives this album such a full-bodied edge. Had a grand ol' time relistening and rediscovering!

Her voice isn't great which she attempts to make up for by shouting. This tactic is not successful. I wasn't keen on this when I was younger - my opinion has not changed over time.

Fun grunge

4 out of 5. Wow I really have slept on Hole my entire life.

i loved the grunge elements, specifically the surprising jumps into loudness. all the songs seem simple in it's delivery/content, making for just an easy listening sesh. only thing i would wish for is less of the slower songs mid way through. Notable Tracks: - Violet - Miss World - Plump - I Think That I Would Die - Gutless

I enjoyed this one more than others but wasn’t too thrilled

BHB made this album.

Loud and angry and powerful. I need to v come back and give this a re listen when I have more time, because I really enjoyed what I heard

Two Hole albums is too. More importantly this is pretty boring. Was probably a breakthrough for them and maybe influential for a certain group of bands, but the songs all sound basically the same. I much preferred Celebrity Skin which is far more developed

Holy Hole, Batman! I just learned that Live Through This was released approximately one week after Kurt Cobain killed himself. The claim that Cobain ghostwrote songs on the album has been debunked. However, I do think his influence is felt and that is to the good.

No notes. Don't f with Courtney.

Again what a treat. Courtney Love and Hole are not as bad as one would have been lead to believe. I think the later release for Celebrity skin was stronger. But you can see the sound, energy and lyrical construction of that album rear its teeth here. I still think that Courtney Love and her CIA ties had something to do with the death of the grunge counterculture. So bearing that in mind. 3.5 stars. Ill round up for good measure.

This came out when I was just a little too young to really be listening to music that wasn't something my parents put on. But I remember a few years after this record came out when I was in middle school it was pretty popular. I always really liked Hole after having heard them when I was just starting to explore different music. Back then I think everyone was in the 'it's cool to hate on Courtney Love' phase and looking back she was definitely treated unfairly. She's not without her issues but she didn't deserve the hate she got. I've heard this record all the way through a handful of times but it's been a while. It starts off really strong with Violet and keeps it up throughout. I've always loved Doll Parts too. You can certainly see the influence Kurt Cobain had on this record, though I'm sure he didn't write it as was rumored. People never want to believe women rockers are the real deal for some reason. And when this came out, Courtney Love was basically dismissed. But it's a great record, if a little dated. 4/5

A definitive album cover of the grunge period, despite always being associated with being released just after the lead singer became a widow. Unlike yesterday's album this one sounds more in keeping with the grunge sound and, from my perspective, is less musically satisfying but certainly more sensationalist and extreme in character. It has its moments........

Never thought I'd enjoy a Courtney Love venture this much. It rocks. Plump is a highlight.

Live through this, но мёртв для моей памяти

Yes I like the punky music but not the video! It s to old fashion!!! Women don t have to be sexy...no!

Okay this record fucking rips. Like how isn’t this talked about alongside the greats in rock/punk from the 90s? I know misogyny has a hand in this but dang this really resonated with me. I’d like to purchase this on CD and listen to it when I feel like a main character. Favs: violet, Jennifer’s body, asking for it, & softer, softest

Love Courtney so much but her voice gets grating after a while on this record

So, way back when... Hole cancelled a concert in Columbus, Ohio last minute without a really good explanation. For YEARS, until they broke up, the local alternative radio station refused to play their music. And I pretty much never listened to them again either. So, after 25 years or so, I pulled this back up...and it's fine. It starts off really strong with Violet and Miss World. I really took notice just how often Courtney would repeat lyrics over and over and over again. Then there's Doll Parts. I never, ever liked that song. Overall, it's fine. Solid 3* album.

solid riot girl album, a lot more hardcore influence than I had realized.

Great Grunge right up there with the big names, should be way more popular. Music, vocals, lyrics - everything is top notch.

Real hole hours

way too much screaming

Hard Seattle punk, girl Nirvana

Something that was edgy and in your face in '94 is kind of tired today. It's got some good tunes and rocks according to the '90s alt rock playbook of Pixies filtered through Nirvana. I like that they kept it short and tight. Twelve songs in under forty minutes is admirable in the age of bloated cds with extra tracks and assorted garbage, good on them. Side note, my sister has a long-running internet feud with CL. It diminishes my opinion of both of them.

poor Jennifer...

One of the best bands and albums of the 90s

damn this album is overlooked

This album is still great, and for the life of me I'll never understand why Courtney decided she never wanted to fucking rock this hard again.

I had never listened to this full album and only a couple of songs off of it, like Violet, which is such a great song. The album really brings me back to the 90s with this type of music and the grunge hard rock style. Really enjoyed the whole album.

Short, sweet, and to the point. Sharp, piercing vocal performances that balance melody with anger. The band does a great job elevating the vocals while smashing their respective instruments.

It would be awesome live I guess

Courtney Love is a bad ass. Girl can growl. Love this album.

It was fine, but I wasn't really impressed by it.

Couple of them were ok, but the screaming just doesn’t do it for me

I can’t believe I haven’t listened to this before!! I do quite like it and will come back to it though it may have amplified my already grumpy mood

Fav song: Violet

Oh yeah!!!

i love uou courtney love

Good stuff. It’s both raw and polished.

First listen for me and I like it. Wild that this was released a week after Kurt Cobain’s death and shortly afterwards the bassist Kristen Pfaff died from a heroin overdose.

This was angsty. But nothing stood out to me. They reminded me of the 4 non blondes

I was really pissed off yesterday so this was honestly kind of perfect. So much angst and emotion in these lyrics. Also didn't know that Courtney Love had her own band! I knew her as Cobains wife, although I am sure she does not like that title.. (thats just where I first heard of her). Talk about a musical powerhouse of a couple, she knows how to rock! This is some damn good riot girl music. Fits a certain rebelious, 'fuck you' attitude perfectly. With good range too, with some softer sections mixed in as well. Although this isn't my favorite genre, I respect it, and would maybe come for a re-listen whenever I am in a particularly pissy mood. 7.5/10

Pretty messed up people tried to say Kurt wrote this album.

I am torn on this tbh. On one hand the album is musically very sound and there are probably more poppy hooky parts on this than it gets credit. On the other hand, Courtney Love‘s vocals really are great on some songs and not so great on others. Overall good tho.

Nice, never really thought about Hole, liked it better than I remembered from the 90s.

Violet 1.5 Miss World 2 Plump 2.5 Asking for it 2 Jennifer’s Body 2.5 Doll Parts 2 Credit in the Straight World 3.5 (JH) Softer, Softest 2 She Walks on Me 1.5 I Think That I Would Die 2 Gutless 1.5 Rock Star 1.5 Total 2.04

Women pixies

Courtney Love can be a controversial person for her attitudes and opinions. But that aspect of her, i think is what makes this album so great. Is raw, aggresive, explicit and devastating how some of the lyrics here depict experiences and the world views of a woman that fights back against the world. I think a lot of the stuff here has it's weight, not for the mere rock music but for the lyrics and the performance done. a great album, important themes

Violet is a class and fits Courtney Love's vocal performance. The rest, I don't know.

In 30 years it lost 1 star, must be an age thing.

iets teveel schreeuwen

Banger after banger.

Courtney Love's got a killer voice but I just don't like this record that much.

I’m not sure some massive talent is revealed here, but extra points for aggression and vibes from a fierce female lead. May she get the most cake!

it's punky and funky and i get the vibe but i can't be in it for long

Pretty good. Like Violet probably because I knew it. Bit samey after a while

Prefer the other Hole, if ya know what I mean

Hole have become my second favourite grunge band. That doesn’t say much as the list was previously one band long. It’s not as good as the last Hole album on the list, but it’s listenable and adequate

Not bad at all. I'm sure theres plenty of haters. The line "Someday you will ache like I ache" goes hard.

I was expecting to like this one since I liked Celebrity Skin pretty well and this one was so well. But no. There’s a lot of screaming.

Albums like this in the 90’s showed us that you don’t have to be amazing, all you need to know are a few bar chords, be able to yell, be pissed off and you too could be a rockstar or maybe it can only happen if you marry someone that has already broken through like Kurt Cobain. Teen angst emulsified with a mirage of Don’t give a f*ck, my pre-teen self liked a couple of their later (admittedly more popular) tracks ( I was only 7 when this album came out). A sound that is in the ‘meh’ pile for me, back then and now and particularly at the 7am timeslot I regrettably decided to listen. Would I buy this album if I saw it in the $5 bargain bin - no but I would pick up Celebrity Skin if it was $5 for the 3 songs I don’t mind.

My 30+ year hatred of Courtney Love (RIP Kurt) prevents me from listening to this album.

Is alright, maybe not my cup of tea

Somehow I''ve managed to get through life thus far completely unaware of the existence of Hole. I regret that. They are probably worth exploring.

The first track is one of the all time great album openers, but after that it drifts a little, with the music lacking the fire and flair that power the lyrics.

High energy.

Meaty, gritty and a lot of attitude. Just how I like my burgers.

Courtney has always been underrated. Violet is just 10/10. The singles are obviously class. Really quite liked gutless, plump. Miles better than celebrity skin. Not as good as pretty on the inside!

Some decent songs on here tbh 'Violet' , 'Plump' , 'Gutless' and 'Jennifer's Body' pretty good Other than that meh. Better album than Celebrity Skin at least

More Punk than Rock. Nice Energy, nice Instrumentals

-1 they are the worst

First time I’ve had the same artist back to back and I massively preferred this to Celebrity Skin yesterday. The opener Violet is a banger of a song and, while I don’t think anything else on here matched it, the whole album is strong throughout. Top Track - Violet

great album for an angry morning never heard of this band, but sounded a lot like nirvana, turns out they are related. who would've thought.

I just don't care for her voice.. at all.

Solid alt rock. Never listened to Hole but I'm enjoying this well enough. Nice music, Courtney Love has pretty strong vocals. Hard to pick anything particular that stood out, but it was a good enough listen.
