Album Summary
Amnesiac is the fifth studio album by the English rock band Radiohead, released on 30 May 2001 by EMI subsidiaries Parlophone and Capitol Records. It was recorded with producer Nigel Godrich in the same sessions as Radiohead's previous album Kid A (2000); Radiohead split the work in two as they felt it was too dense for a double album. As with Kid A, Amnesiac incorporates influences from electronic music, 20th-century classical music, jazz and krautrock. The final track, "Life in a Glasshouse", is a collaboration with the jazz trumpeter Humphrey Lyttelton and his band. After having released no singles for Kid A, Radiohead promoted Amnesiac with the singles "Pyramid Song" and "Knives Out", accompanied by music videos. Videos were also made for "Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors" and "Like Spinning Plates", and "I Might Be Wrong", which was released as a promotional single. In June 2001, Radiohead began the Amnesiac tour, incorporating their first North American tour in three years. Amnesiac debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and number two on the US Billboard 200. By October 2008, it had sold over 900,000 copies worldwide. It is certified platinum in the UK, the US and Canada, and gold in Japan. Though some critics felt it was too experimental or less cohesive than Kid A, or saw it as a collection of outtakes, it received positive reviews; it was named one of the year's best albums by numerous publications. Amnesiac was nominated for the Mercury Prize and several Grammy Awards, winning for Best Recording Package for the special edition. "Pyramid Song" was named one of the best tracks of the decade by Rolling Stone, NME and Pitchfork, and Rolling Stone ranked Amnesiac number 320 in their 2012 "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list. Kid A Mnesia, an anniversary reissue compiling Kid A, Amnesiac and previously unreleased material, was released in 2021.

I so sick of listening to the whiny motherfucker. 4 down, 2 more to sit through.
Dur dur, trop fait pour les puristes !

1) "Packt Like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Box" - Percussion is like someone hitting on a stainless steel pan. Electric music delights compared to Radiohead's first album. Jaded Thom Yorke's voice gives this song its charm. 2) "Pyramid Song" - This song is Iconic. Mellow piano and Thom Yorke's voice give it a stressed fedeling, with minor chords and strings sounding like something from a sober funeral. 3) "Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors" - Very Avant-Garde opening with modulated voice. The track is sometimes mellow - sometimes harsh. It sounds like a mechanical fever dream. Drum machine is doing a lot of work. Reversed sounds are interesting. Overall depressing sounds, which is fitting for an album. 4) "You and Whose Army?" - Very classical singer-songwriter song at the beginning morphing into a big wave of sound. Very low-fi(at the beginning). The choir is wonderful here, keys are doing its part. Very dramatic. 5) "I Might Be Wrong" - Guitars are interesting. Drum machines instead of drums give this song an interesting kick. Vocals are wonderful, very soothing and depressing. Guitars keep you in rhythm with a tragic feel. 6) "Knives Out" - A more relaxed feeling than the previous track overall, even though with the same level of tragic. Very rich, yet minimal orchestration. I’m very impressed with Thom Yorke’s vocals throughout this album. 7) "Morning Bell/Amnesiac" - Very dissonant song, still with wonderful vocals. Lyrics are a bit mellow and I like it. Repeating “around” feels like a preaching. Dissonance helps this song a lot. His “Release me” makes me think a lot. 8) "Dollars and Cents" - Like the drumming on this one. Electronic orchestra feel makes this sound seem grandiose. Feeling like you’re in a well. Lyrics sound manic, very unnerving feel. “All over the planet’s dead” like a sentence to the world. 9) "Hunting Bears" - Very sitar- sounding guitar either the delay at the start, love the sound modulation on the guitar. Feels like something from Neil Young. 10) "Like Spinning Plates" - This song unnerves me. Very paranoid sound, even live instruments feel a little dead here(in a good way). The choral feel all over this song makes me feel things. Dark feel on this one. 11) "Life in a Glasshouse" - Do I like it as a closer? More yes than no. Very jazzy feeling with this one. Love the piano a lot, also the saxophone is wonderful. Another funeral feeling, a little drunk(yet happy) funeral with this one. Very interesting song. Dark and jaded happiness oozes from this song. ------------ Conclusion: Very dark, deep, melodic, depressing and paranoid album. The beauty of the dark shines in this record. Very pleasant but unnerving listen. The vocals on this albu are very sad, but in a good way. Was surprised with how extraordinary this album was. 8.5/10
As someone who mostly has listened to Radioheads bigger hits ("Creep", "Let Down" and "Karma Police" as a few examples), the opening doesn't exactly hook me... It's very experimental with synth drums and other synths going on. It's not horrible by any mean but, I don't see myself listening to it again. However, "Pyramid Song" pulls me back in with a softer yet still experimental vibe, the piano and background synths complementing each others while Thom Yorke's voice blends wonderfully with the strings. It's a much more competent song in my opinion and should've been the opener to hook listeners in. I think overall this album is far from bad and is a good example of what Radiohead is : Experimental and not afraid to be.
I like this album but I think its the weakest one in their discography
No
Once again, I'm not smart enough for Radiohead. I can't figure out what's happening on this album, and overall it's less sonically interesting to me than OK Computer or Kid A. When I break the code on the band generally, maybe I'll circle back to this one.
Weak compared to other Radiohead albums imo. Still some all time bangers but they've done better. Which is unfortunately hard to deny even though I think Thom Yorke sucks
Fav: Pyramid Song, Knives Out, Morning Bell, Like Spinning Plates L: Life in a Glasshouse 4 For some reason I’ve listened to Kid A like 10 times and never this one. I think between the two Amnesiac might be a little better. Between the two you could get a 5/5 single album or I think it should have just been a 4/5 double. Cover: 4 kind of emblematic of the band Name: 3.5 Minecraft Parody: Village Bell/Phantom Spawner, Like Sticky Pistons
It's experimental but I don't think they pulled it off. Interesting though. Does it need to be on the list? Probably the one to drop from the 6 on it. Outside of the two main singles Life in a Glasshouse stood out for me. Gave Hail To the Thief 3.5 and I preferred that album so 3/5.
Radiohead being Radiohead. Somber, thought-provoking, distinct and original. Thom Yorke is just something else with his songwriting and harmonizing. The music is mysterious and alluring, creating an aura of intrigue and discovery. I had never listened to this record before from their catalog, but I like this one upon first listen. A 3/5 for now, but maybe 4/5.
It was alright. There were standout songs like Pyramid Song and Knives out, but the album felt kind of directionless overall.
Mucho mejor de lo que recordaba Canciones favoritas: You and whose army?, I might be wrong
Not my favorite album to work out to
So far once every two weeks I’ve been recommended a Radiohead album.. the only artist I’ve been recommended more than once so far, and my opinion of them is only getting worse… describing anything on this album as music, would be an insult to anybody who has ever even heard of the concept of music… this is just noise, and even that description is being overly nice… how has Radiohead convinced so many that they have any skill is beyond me…the fact that after this album finished, Spotify started playing the smiths, and my response was “thank god, something upbeat” shows how miserably depressing Radiohead are as a band… and why are they so depressing, when in reality they should be constantly laughing about how they’ve undeservedly stolen a music career for decades… I know there is at least 2 more Radiohead albums on this list, and I know my luck means I’ll be listening to them soon… but for now FUCK RADIOHEAD
7.2/10
no.
Perfectly fine album. Felt very repetitive with the same sound.
I think it’s probably Radiohead’s least approachable album. I also think it’s one of the coolest rock albums ever produced. Absolutely love it.
Kid A’s weirder little brother. I went into this thinking I disliked this album more than I actually did, there’s some really good songs here (I Might Be Wrong, Knives Out, etc) but there’s some odd instrumental offcuts which aren’t that good, the version of Morning Bell here isn’t as good as the Kid A version. It’s also missing the WOW moments from Kid A that elevate it to more than the sum of its parts. Still… good album.
Meh
Not a fan.
veeery low fi, wide songs sound different from each other a bit like sigur ros a bit boring, a bit long, but good for this type of thing very good closer
Toujours un plaisir d'écouter un album de Radiohead, avec de superbes morceaux comme "Pyramid Song", "I Might Be Wrong" ou "Life In a Glasshouse". 4.5/5
Good
Vocals - 1 star Instrumentation/Compilation - 5 stars
This one is peculiar. I think it really can be whatever you want it to be. It can be a great active listen that is musically interesting and worth analyzing, but it can also be background sound. You can find beauty and feeling throughout the lyrics and singing style, or you can just find them boring and maybe even unappealing. Therefore, any ranking you give is completely justifiable. For me, I want to give it 5 stars, but might meander down to a 4 based on the peculiarity. I normally find uniqueness/peculiarness as a desirable trait in music, but with Radiohead it somehow hits different. Maybe I'm overthinking it, maybe that's the whole point...
Kid A's mer medgörliga lillasyster.
Första halvan är väldigt bra med You and whose army? och I might be wrong som skivans bästa låtar. Andra halvan lite luddigare i konturerna, men en stark avslutning i Life in a glasshouse.
It's mood may be as relentlessly downcast as ever, but Amnesiac sees Radiohead drawing a vast array of sounds and influences into their woeful world. Knives Out bears the mark of the Smiths in its serpentine guitar figure; I Might Be Wrong entirely undercuts its muscular blues riffing with Yorke's high-pitched, heartbroken vocal.
Creative but hard to listen to.
A couple good songs on here like Pyramid but otherwise not a huge fan of the whole album.
i like radiohead, this just didn’t stand out.
I can't tell if this is pretentious or not. I also can't tell if I like it or not. I did enjoy some of the grander soundscapes, but couldn't point to one song and say I loved it. 2.5/5
Intellectually stimulating but musically unsatisfying. They were always kind of nihilistic but I think after OK Computer, the lack of any hope in the music leaves the listener with only melancholy. While I actually like melancholic music, in the absence of something for contrast it can be tedious.
Garbage pure GARBAGE
buen disco
Radiohead is the perfect example of a band, where though they have released both great songs and good albums, it doesn't mean an album is either
This is up there for Radiohead, it's not their best tho. It's more of Kid A but not the best of Kid A 4.5
I've never cared for Radiohead, despite all the praise. I just find it a little dull
I really don't respect Radiohead enough, I think. This is really good. It's very odd and experimental, but it's really fascinating rock. Favorite Song(s): Pyramid Song, You and Whose Army?
Have to have headphones on and listen to it properly to full enjoy but really like this album. 'Life in a Glasshouse' is an incredible song, and enjoy 'I Might be Wrong'. Not a fan of 'Hunting Bears' or 'Like Spinning Plates' though. Every other song is either amazing or good.
Ambient/art pop really scratches an itch for me.
Decent album cover, nothing special unfortunately, unlike some of radioheads other covers. This album has some memorable songs, pretty much the first 3. Packt like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Box, Pyramid Song, Pulk/Pull Revolving doors. The most interesting song is definetely Pulk/Pull Revolving doors, it sounds completely different from the rest of the album, and for ball knowers, it sounds like an escape room from Zero Escape. Not radioheads best work certainly, but this album shows they have potential in their others. Best Song: You and Whose Army? Worst Song: Life in a Glasshouse.
I understand Radiohead is a well known group, so I was mildly disappointed. Each song felt like a completely different mood, so it never really flowed cohesively. I enjoyed the guitar sound on Hunting Bears
This album takes up so much space so far away. The size of the room can be heard in distant sounds and airy vocals. Some songs choose to step closer and some pull away, giving an atmosphere to this record — a strangely beautiful one. The artistry is shown in the expert craft that makes it easy to be immersed in the landscape. As striking as it is, it takes effort to dissect it, and listening simply, the quality is not obvious. The experimentation on “Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors” is interesting, but also misses the mark.
near a 1, idk
Boooo radiohead
so darn cheeky
Obviously superb, but pretty unrelentingly sparse and bleak. I always remember the Mark Greif essay about Radiohead in N+1, which articulates my thoughts about their output up to 2005 much better than I ever could in my own language, so I won't waste my flipping time here: https://www.nplusonemag.com/issue-3/essays/radiohead-or-philosophy-pop/
Radiohead are one of those artists I’m curious to hear more of from this list, because I instinctively dislike them (though that’s partly against Thom Yorke’s bad politics as much as the music). Based on this, this phase of their work isn’t for me, but it’s fine. When we get more actual instruments on tracks I definitely get the feel that this is a group of real quality, but I think there’s too much artificiality for me to really enjoy this. Songs just become too slow and end up passing me by. It’s better than the post-rock imitators of this era of Radiohead, but it still leaves me cold.
Radiohead doubled down on the more experimental direction taken on Kid A with this follow up consisting of songs taken from the same session. The highlights are sublime. 'Pyramid Song' and 'Knives Out' are some of the best songs in their discography. The album feels like a more disjointed, lower quality version of Kid A, but is still good enough for a 4.
A really good album, unsurprisingly pretty similar to its immediate predecessor ‘Kid A’ given that it came from the same sessions, but maybe just a shade lower in quality? That said, there are some brilliant tracks here, including ‘Pyramid Song’, ‘You and Whose Army?’, ‘Knives Out’, and ‘Life in a Glasshouse’, all of which are among my favourite Radiohead songs. Conversely, there are some more experimental/electronic tracks that don’t do a whole lot for me, including the opener, ‘Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors’, and ‘Like Spinning Plates’. Most of the album is excellent, however. Easily good enough for 4 stars.
I remember when this album was released and being excited about it. Shortly after, I stopped identifying as a Radiohead fan. Absolute cack, but not earsplittingly so.
main character walking down the streets, is raining, you are listening to this album youre soaking wet but life is worth the living
O-V-E-R-R-A-T-E-D
Too slow. Grating lyrics. Nothing to hear here.
terrible
Deeply melancholic and depressing, wonderfully it makes you feel things that you wouldn’t have felt while listening to such a dreary nightmarish sounds, but the discovery of such emotion brings unparalleled peace inside your soul.
за шо
love radiohead overall of their albums great album
The production of this album was amazing, all the instruments sounded clear and had nice feelings from them, but amazing production can’t save radio head, idk, I try to like their music so hard but I feel bored by allot of the tracks, I really only like the most popular songs tbh
nunca habia escuchado radio head. 3.5 estrllas.
Packd Like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Box - 6/10. Atmospheric and a bit weird. Pyramid Song - 4/10. Just depressing. Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors - 2/10. Deeply unpleasantly dissonant. You and Whose Army? - 3/10. Horribly depressing. I Might Be Wrong - 5/10. Knives Out - 6/10. Morning Bell/Amnesiac - 5/10. Dollars and Cents - 5/10. Hunting Bears - 4/10. Like Spinning Plates - 3/10. Deeply weird and unpleasant. Life in a Glass House - 4/10. The brass gives it a bonus. Overall Rating - 2.14/5 (4.27/10). Blech. If depression were an album, it would be this. Who actually likes Radiohead? Just not a good listen.
The fact this is basically made from unused in rainbows tracks and it's still this good is something I'll never understand
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
A bit different from their more famous albums, you can notice they were trying to go a slightly different way with this one.
It's a great album. I know that Radiohead are capable of so much better than this, and a few of these songs definitely feel like leftovers, but Radiohead's leftovers are still more desirable than the main course of many of the other artists on this list. Plus we have bangers like Packt Like Sardines and Knives Out. I'll still take this record all day, it'll never be my first choice out of Radiohead’s discography but it’s still a great listen.
It’s probably in the bottom third of their albums, but it’s still got more in it than most bands can do in a career. Plus Pyramid Song is just a perfect track.
Not really a fan
😬 didn’t quite vibe with this one
HIGHLY underrated radiohead album. really enjoyed this, loved the use of jazz
Just wanted a second listen
You can hear the influences pulling at this from every direction: electronic rhythms, jazz, a vocal that's all melancholy. "Pyramid Song" is the moment it works — the piano sits in an unsettling place and the tension holds for the whole track. The rest didn't give me much more than texture. Interesting, well made, but ordinary in the end.
I think there is a large amount of “The Emperor’s New Clothes” when it comes to Radiohead. I enjoyed Kid A and also Amnesiac here, but I cannot elevate this (as this is the album we are dealing with here) to such elevated status as it’s reputation demands. It is experimental, yes, and I wish there was a bit more of this about and a lot of it works, but it isn’t anything more for me than a really good experimental album. 3/5.
It sounds like leftovers right? Like some of the experiments are cool, I love maybe 2 songs here, but it’s so disjointed. I’m too tired to write much of a review for it, but lemme put it this way: “Pyramid Song” and “Knives Out” are two of Radiohead’s best songs, hands down. They will never fail to blow me away. Other than those two songs, NOTHING ELSE HERE NEEDS TO BE KEPT. Other than those two, the best songs here are obviously half-formed and barely justifiable as experimental anyway. It doesn’t deserve the love. 5.3/10 DOES IT BELONG ON THE LIST: NO REASON: Boring and overblown WHAT SHOULD BE HERE INSTEAD: Idk throw Emergency & I on here
never heard this before. i really liked knives out
Arts for Arts sake is one of my many pet peeves. Its like if a film looks stylish and is state of the art alternative but has no soul or plot, I would not appreciate it. Here, I do appreciate the sounds of a tin being struck but ultimately it felt dull not deep. The only song I could get behind was Life in the Glasshouse with the brass section. I love brass. Its kind of sad as I love everything up to OK computer and this feels more like the Radiohead I knew and obsessed over.
Fiebertraum
great radiohead album, some misses on it but also some greats. I'm feeling a strong 7 to a light 8. first listen tracklist ranking: 1. I Might Be Wrong 2. Pyramid Song 3. Life in a Glasshouse 4. Knives Out 5. Morning Bell/Amnesiac 6. Like Spinning Plates 7. You and Whose Army? 8. Dollars and Cents 9. Packt Like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Box 10. Hunting Bears 11. Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors
Radiohead is not my thing. 2/5
This was okay. I think it’s a decent Radiohead album. Probably the least interesting after OK Computer and Kid A. But it’s still good. Listening again took me back to a time. And moment in my life. It’s what makes music good. You remember when you first heard it.
8/10
Despite being recorded at the same time as Kid A, Amnesiac takes a much different approach. Kid A was full of soundscapes and atmosphere, but this one contains much more traditional songs. Some of those songs are very strong. The opener is rhythmic and layered, and "Pyramid Song" is haunting. But the middle of the album is full of songs that, while good, don't use the electronic elements in a new way and are minor entries in the Radiohead catalogue. The album ends very strong though, with the sharp guitar tones of "Hunting Bears," the disorienting "Like Spinning Plates," and the climactic jazz rock of the closer. A bit of a minor entry in Radiohead's discography, but it tweaks the band's typical elements just enough to stand out.
Brilliant! Amnesiac is Radiohead's Kid A follow on that weaves haunting jazz, ambient electronica, and raw psychological dread into a mesmerizing labyrinth of sound. Pyramid Song features a shifting, syncopated piano melody and a ghostly swing beat that creates an eerie, timeless atmosphere. Life in a Glasshouse blends traditional New Orleans funeral jazz with Thom Yorke's haunting vocals for a powerful, cinematic closing statement. This album captures deep isolation and modern anxiety, functioning as a jagged, experimental sibling to Kid A. Easy 5.
Ok - probably my least favourite of the Radiohead albums I’ve listened to
Class on vinyl.
It's been a while since I've listened to Amnesiac, so I listened twice. Radiohead has continually reinvented and pushed boundaries, none more so than here. A great album.
Very good. But not their best
A 5* band at the top of its powers rejects its dna and re-emerges as a completely different 5* band. Rock music is re-invented in the process. Only one score for that. 5*
