Some interesting and challenging ideas on show here Familiarity: 2 – Unknown album Songs I would actively choose to listen to: 2 - Little What can I remember the next day?: 2 - Little Best song: Sweat Loaf
Liked songs: E-pro; Qué Onda Guero; Girl; Go it alone
Breed
Inoffensive, but ultimately forgettable
Solid as an album, better than the sum of its parts
Some big songs on there, but also filler Familiarity: 3 – Know some songs Songs I would actively choose to listen to: 2 - Little What can I remember the next day?: 2 - Little Best song: Sing a Simple Song
The energy in this is nonstop Familiarity: 5 – Deep Familiarity Songs I would actively choose to listen to: 3 - Half What can I remember the next day?: 4 - Most Best song: Paradise City
What a belter of an album. Familiarity: 5 – Deep Familiarity Songs I would actively choose to listen to: 3 - Half What can I remember the next day?: 4 - Most Best song: Paradise by the Dashboard Light
Much preferred the electric first half over the acoustic second Familiarity: 2 – Unknown album Songs I would actively choose to listen to: 1 - None What can I remember the next day?: 1 - None Best song: Outlaw Blues
Solid background noise for landing my kickflips
Only got as far as track 3 - need to revisit
This is just noise, and not the good kind
Solid mixture of rock through this
I didn't dislike the album, but I don't think I found anything musically interesting to warrant another listen.
I quite liked the space rock
Recognised a couple of songs Fave song : chocolate cake
Saves the best till last. Some of the samples did sound a bit like someone was just mashing a soundboard randomly
Outside of the "big 2", all a bit dreary
(Pain in the arse trying to listen to this without Spotify)
I didn't really feel like this album went anywhere, and nothing to be found here worth revisiting. Familiarity: [2 – Unknown album] Songs I would actively choose to listen to: [1 - None] What can I remember the next day?: [1 - None}
Just a bit bland Familiarity: [3 – Know some songs] Songs I would actively choose to listen to: [1 - None] What can I remember the next day?: [1 - None}
Excellent album to have on in the background
A bit chaotic, a bit reggae, a bit punk. I enjoyed this Familiarity: [3 – Know some songs] Songs I would actively choose to listen to: [2 - Little] What can I remember the next day?: [3 - Half]
Complete unknown to me but exceeded expectations. First half much stronger than second
"A lot of noise"
The boss of bossa nova.
I think Run DMC benefit from a collaboration. As influential as it may have been, I am glad hip hop has progressed from this.
This is a great . Trim a few songs and this might have been a 5
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would
Protopunk
Never heard of The Gun Club. Solid punk album.
Not familiar with this album. A few moments but probably too long.
Only thing I knew before listening was Bohemian Like You. This was ok.
A couple of good songs strung together by dreary toss.
I enjoy CCR, but it does all sound a bit samey
Banging start, banging end, dips in the middle but still good stuff
I don't think I've ever listened to a Blur album outside of greatest hits - generally I don't think I was missing too much but credit where it's due there's some fun bits on here. Much more variety of sounds than some of their Britpop peers. Oompah
There is a lot more blues on this than I was expecting. Not a lot of variety though. An excellent background album.
Well this is a bit of nostalgia. You can definitely hear Blur in some of the tracks with just Alburn involved, but add in the collaborations and there's a lot going on. Not sure that I'd be putting any of the non singles on a playlist, but as a whole, very enjoyable.
Completely unknown to me, and not sure what I think of it. The songs on this all have an aspect that i quite like, whether that is a riff, the bass line, the drums; but the other parts of the songs are just a bit pants. I do enjoy that the Wikipedia summary for the album seems to have been written by a ten year old: "It's called that because it's from Ohio".
I heard you like 12 bar blues.
Acoustic versions of some of their slower songs and covers. Just a bit boring.
Björk's singing I can see being a bit divisive, but I quite like the underlying music.
The first song seemed vaguely familiar, but otherwise completely unknown artist. I dig this
Heavy beats to start with, but felt it dipped after that.
I absolutely love this. This is album is a reminder that I should probably listen to more of these albums in stereo and/or through good quality headphones .
Not much of anything - lacking some Young
Rose-tinted glasses perhaps but the opening few tracks are great. Then there is a bit of cliff edge.
Quite the rollercoaster. In isolation you hear BoRhap and think it is all over the place in terms of genres, and then you hear it in this album and it makes more sense. Overall I enjoyed this
Now that's what I call an album cover! I didn't really realise there was more to VM than Brown Eyed Girl, but this album is a cracker.
A consistently solid album. My criticism is exactly that though - if the same song played twice in the album I probably wouldn't notice
Van Morrisonandonandonandon
Some good funk tunes, but tailed off a bit
I really don't know why this is on the list
Meh. Nothing interesting here
Not my usual cup of tea, but better than i expected. Still wouldn't call it particularly enthralling however
Knowing nothing about them, I was looking forward to this based on the band's info on Spotify: "Gang of Four is one of the most radically important, and influential rock groups of the last 40 years." I am underwhelmed.
A classic. I think this is the first 20+ minute song on the list. Let there be more
I would have never guessed this was from 1973.
I found myself quite bored listening to this
Other than the first song, everything just sort of blended together. Not very interesting, and definitely sounds a bit dated
Was alright, but nothing to get particularly excited about
Nice mix of classic rock
Some relaxing folk with enjoyable vocals compared to some of of the prior albums
Lots of ideas going on here, but a bit of fun overall
A novel listen? Sure. An album I'll come back to? Probably not.
I don't think I've ever actually listened to an Eminem album. There are some enjoyable songs, but its hard to ignore the rampant homophobia and needless violence throughout. I have no idea how much of this is supposed to be taken literally, what is and isn't in character as Marshall Matters, or if this is supposed to be some sort of meta-commentary, but it definitely hampered my enjoyment of the album. When did i become a woke snowflake?
Music for the snart-sniffer and I'm in the game for some gastromatherapy
I think I understood less than half words, and most of those were variations of words that I daren't type. I did enjoy a cocking gun providing the beat on one of the tracks, and recognised a surprising number of other songs, but I can't say that I got much enjoyment from my listen
Classic Britpop. Can definitely feel the influence of other artists, but also adding in their own spin with the classical (/sampled) instruments.
I tried to find some redeeming features, I really did. There were moments where I thought I understood it, the beat of industrial machinery. And then I'd be out of it again. I think I could probably listen to a single track and get along ok with it, but a whole album is hard going. I think the only reason I'd revisit this album is to annoy someone else.
SIMPLY (bo)RED
It was ok. Inoffensive.
I enjoyed this so much more than their debut
I'm just a basic Britpop bitch
Needing the full 70 minutes is just showing off
I enjoyed it, but (to my ears) this is quite repetitive (and to be fair, there are actual repeats of songs)
I love the groove of CH, it all seems so smooth
Fam was tidy hot sauce
I explicitly gave permission to my wedding DJ to play something from this album and he didn't. What a melon.
Its a solid album, but didn't really excite me.
She is undeniably a good singer, but I really didn't find anything interesting
Enjoyable
Solid 70s rock
I went in expecting something a bit more "Sex Pistols"esque, but that was not to be. Opening track sounded like protosludge, but then the next track went a bit off the rails. Not my favourite punk album...
Not my favourite White Stripes album, but still solid
A lot of British postpunk being thrown at us. This album made me feel better about my own musical playing abilities
A bit of 80s fun
Dreadful (although for reasons unknown to myself not a 1)
Was alright. Was pleased to see the last song was actually 10 minutes long and didn't just sound like it had been going on forever
I am the music man, I come from down your way and I can play. What can you play? I play piano Pia-pia-pia-no Pia-no pia-no Pia-pia-pia-no Pia-pia-no
Another 20 minuter! Enjoyed it more than the rest of the album
This feels very 70s. I ended up listening to this a few times because i ended up getting distracted each time, and i think it got a little worse with each listen.
A relaxing soundtrack where I knew more songs than I thought I did.
I enjoyed the hard rock, didn't overstay its welcome as it was starting to sound a bit samey.
Wouldn't it be nice if this album was more interesting. Did not need to be 20+ tracks long
Not my usual cup of tea, but knew lots of songs here. Would rate it higher but I know that I probably won't be listening to it again.
Started off quite a strong, but I did tire of Billy by the second half
Sure, why not
Wait, 1970s UK post-punk can actually be enjoyable?
I think I suffered a case of Jazz fatigue here
Not for me
I wish this had been a while album of Quiet Life
Lesser known Blur songs (to me), still a largely solid album
This was a bit of a chore to get through. At least it was only 36 minutes.
Bit of a mixed bag, but overall not much reason to listen again.
I need to pace myself so I don't end up with 5 five-star LedZep albums
I'd probably appreciate this more if I wasn't feeling ill
I like the funkiness, although seemed like another front ended album
Enjoyed the flow of this
A rather lovely album
This was not as fun as I was hoping. Don't think the audience noises helped
There is a lot of fat to trim in this - meh
Some loverly proggers. Quality is a bit inconsistent but enjoyable album
Recognised a fair amount, enjoyed it but potentially marked down because of the flu factor
I can see the montage of Icelandic landscapes with lava flowing through and this playing in the background.
A mixed bag, but overall not really worth a relisten.
This is an excellent bit of reggae groove - what I needed.
Genre spanning, but did not need 2 hours of this
This was short and sweet, two thumbs up
An album of covers that I enjoyed more than I thought I would
Sehr gut
Very Radio 6
Given how recent this was, I was expecting much more. Perhaps I would have enjoyed it more with more active listening, but not bothered by this based on what I did hear.
Not quite sure why, but I did enjoy this
A bit samey perhaps, but good energy.
28 songs in 41 minutes is fairly impressive. Unfortunately that was the most impressive thing about the album
This has some hot potatoes
I did like the mixture of styles presented on here, but whilst some songs I enjoyed, a lot I wasn't all that bothered by
This was a nice relaxing album, and although I'm not sure if there are many cover bangers in here. However I found it very "backgroundish" - I think there are other WN songs I enjoy more (as demonstrated once Spotify started to play recommendations after the end of the album)
Um álbum muito divertido
Bland AF
Is soothing punk a thing?
Half the songs are great, half are just a bit meh.
Gravelly voice, plinketty plonk fingers, jazz club whooping. Hubba bubba.
I could probably be reluctantly persuaded to listen to this once a year before swiftly moving on with my life
Some great songs on here (and boobies)
Would have been great if I was attending a night club in the Matrix
Inoffensive, but can't say it had much of an impact
Non stop bops
A good groove to this, enjoyable driving album
Not very interesting
Curtis can do better than this
By golly it's Dolly. Half an hour is a perfect length for this before outstaying it's welcome
Enjoyed this more than I expected (although I don't really know what I expected). Suspect that this would grow with more plays
I am whelmed. A mixed bag of classic Who and covers, but I think I was expecting more?
Mostly Gives Mellifluous Tunage
Quite a broad mix going on here, generally enjoyed it
Great music to help cure insomnia
Want None
This was the album I had in my car CD player for a few weeks in c2013, and I don't think my opinion has changed since then - the middle drags the album from some fantastic pop hits into something more arty and I'm not sure that that the result is better than the sum of its parts.
Can't believe they had the opportunity to have multiple 20 minute songs and they choked 4 times. I had no idea what was going on in this album, and I liked it. Moon in June is the weakest of the collection - could have otherwise been a 4
An excellent album, although some of the second half not quite achieving banger status
This was fun
I think I was waiting for Blue Monday and it never came
Humpty Dumpty was a big fat egg
The problem with rating things with whole numbers out of 5 is that it struggles to capture the nuance of the score. I can certainly understand why it would be rated 1/5 en masse using this scoring system, but it certainly isn't the worst on the list. That said, I don't think there is anything on here worth revisiting, and (not that it should influence the rating of the music), hard to ignore the album cover looks like a photo in the Epstein files.
Pretty funky
It was alright, I did have some fun, but not too much fun
I really enjoyed listening to this yesterday, and then listened again today and enjoyed it less so. Maybe I need the background of a kitchen to bring it to life
Good opener, then they decided to take it easy
A whole lot of nothing
I did in fact turn it up and bring the noise and it was quite delightful
I did not realise that Slade was such an international cultural reference point. Notwithstanding that, I can't say I felt much noise in this
Oof. What a debut
An impressively rigid naming structure to songs. Album did start to drag a bit
Lots of energy, the baby loved it
Smoother than a freshly plastered wall
I prematurely came for the Big Muff but was left disappointed. Inoffensive album but didn't do much for me.
I listened to this twice and I still can't remember anything about it
More relevant than ever?
I didn't think that I would recognise so much of this
I was very confused when I was expecting to hear YUNGBLUD. This is a fun album, with a bit of everything
I think this should have been more fun
Probably good but I just didn't care for it enough. Perhaps a different view on a different day.
This does slap, although lacking in certified bangers
I can confirm that this sounded like Bjork
This was alright? Not sure why on the list
Started more exciting than it ended
Couldn't even stop raining for me to listen to this
There is definitely something here worth listening to, but need to be in the right mood. Trip hop is not the one when full of cold
A broad spectrum of enjoyable songs.
I made it about half way through track two before I had a look to see how much longer this album would be. Not terrible, but found this a chore to listen to.
Hmmmm. Opens strongly, and then it just sort of meanders into mediocrity. I was expecting more. Hard to give it a higher score.
Solid commuting music
The highs are high, but there is a lot of plain stuff here
Not a "bad" album, but not enough excitement for me. In the right mood I can see this being better received
Another low octane album that doesn't offer much in terms of thrills but nothing inherently off-putting about it.
Sure sounds like CCR
I admire the vision, but this was a giant mound of "meh"
Didn't realise that they crammed all these known tracks onto a single album. I'm feeling generous.
Hello, yes it is I, the uncultured swine. This is difficult to rate. It wasn't "bad", but I'm not rushing back to listen to it again. I also have no idea if I listened to the intended version of this album.
Front-loaded. Was hoping for some unknown-to-me-juicy-booty but alas that was not to be
Bit of a mixed bunch, but nothing to elevate to greatness.
Didn't really care for this, other than "Leather"
I enjoyed the first half more than the second - overall a decent debut, if this young man can work on his stamina then I have a feeling things are looking up.
Chef's kiss. This album is stacked
This was a grower for me, but ended up really enjoying it
Probably deserves a higher rating but I cba
An impressively dense album of hits
I feel like most of the lifeforce and energy in my body has been sucked out by this album. I don't actively dislike it, but I don't see a reason for me to listen to this again
I'm starting to get the impression that I don't enjoy a lot of country
As iconic as it is, I think this falls short of greatness
It's ok. Not sure how/why this was so acclaimed - maybe I need a deeper knowledge of the Cheap Trick back catalogue
Don't think I'd ever heard of The Soft Boys before, but I enjoyed this album.
I appreciate that this sounds quite different from the other TW albums we have heard so far, but this was particularly entertaining
It's a solid album, but doesn't really stand out
More country. This one was at least a bit more enjoyable
I was hoping to discover some more gems on here bit nothing else quite reaches the heights of Frontier Psychiatrist
It was fine I guess?
I thought Buffalo Springfield was one of those bands who had loads of hits you just didn't realise. But, no, they have one, and its not on this album. Wouldn't bother with this again
Ranged from enjoyable to forgettable.
I came in with high expectations, but this was a bit of a nothing album
It was ok, and I imagine that it has a place in the right circumstances, but this did not meet my Monday morning energy boost requirements
All over the place in the best way possible
This is fun, oh wait a minute I know that song! Solid stuff
Better start than end
Another one where I am not sure why it is on the list
I think I was expecting a bit more
Songs are better than the album art
Certainly experimental, but there is better Zappa. Doubt I'd listen again, but i wasn't clawing my ears off
This one grew on me over time. Took me about a third of the album before I recognised his voice
Probably deserves higher, but meh
Nothing wrong with the album, it just doesn't jingle my jangles
A fairly solid 90s pop album
Better than some of the other country that we have listened to
I enjoyed this more on a second listen through. A fun album for the electric piano enthusiast
Never heard of them before, but a pleasant find
Fantastic start, that started to slow towards the end, but I'm on holiday so why not
Suede don't do much to raise a heart rate. Thought the album was picking up at the end before realising Spotify was now doing suggestions
Some more seminal 70s punk
The front half of the album contains the hits, but overall this is a very chill hour. Scores higher for listening by the pool in the sun
Was not feeling this Stevie
When I was about 8 we were allowed to bring in our favourite song to listen to in class. Being cheeky I played the double bill of Right Here Right Now / Rockefeller Skank. I do remember the panic though to rush to the CD player before the rather less child friendly track 3 played
Of its era. Marking down as I'm back at work
Struggled to rate this one - I suspect I have rated harshly as I prefer other Hendrix output
This is stacked
I think I expected to like this more than I did, but can't put my finger on why.
I enjoyed this, but did feel it was quite long and quite samey. Suspect it might grow with more listens
Mixed bag, but there is definitely an underlying groove running through some of the tracks
There wasn't really anything on this that would make me want to relisten
Another fairly boring one for me
Best track last, but not enough to save this album Regatta > Synchronicity
Nostalgia playing a heavy hand here, but this is solid throughout
This could have been an early THPS soundtrack
I think i have cooled a bit on Pantera since having a greatest hits CD in circulation in my car as a teen. However I'd be hard-pressed to name another album that describes itself so succinctly
Solid as a rock
The bangers here make up for some of the drearier tracks
Good to see that Brazil is not just represented by Samba on the list, although I do have some questions - there are 30 "metal" albums on the the list (half of which are a bit dubious), and so two of them being Sepultura, and one of those being this album rather than Chaos AD, is odd. This is a solid thrash album. Rating boosted by existing prejudices
I thought that I had listened to this album before, but I had zero recognition of some of the tracks.
I actually quite liked this, but it just went on a bit too long
Fantastic debut
It was ok
For some reason I thought it said this was released in 1976 which massively confused me. Then I was caught off guard by the opening of Black Sabbath, and then later the full cover of Iron Man. I enjoyed this
Another AF album I slept on
Sounded like a standard 90s pop album, albeit with a couple of belters - not sure that I'd bother with the whole album again
They definitely became more interesting with time
Grunge like treacle
Funk is funk. I have already forgotten the whole album however
This started off as "why on earth is this on the list", but slowly ascended into something I actually quite enjoyed. Maybe if I listened again I'd enjoy the first half more, but it is what it is.
Upon reflection, I got my Ray Charles and my Charles Wright mixed up. Amateur hour.
I did not care much for this - don't really know what it was trying to be
I was not born in the USA. Dragged up by a few hits
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
Can't go too wrong with playing with your organ for extended periods of time
I was bored before I got to the end of track 3, and then there were 17 more songs. I imagine that this is an album that sounds better Live.
Not for me
Very good, but not quite as consistent as Nevermind. My wife did not enjoy.
In one ear and straight out the other. Quite samey, but probably deserves more
He's got some good bops, but this comes down to personal taste
Close but no cigar(ettes & alcohol)
Pleasant background indie
I don't feel like this ever got anywhere. Needed more oomph
Brucey just isn't very interesting
Maybe I should have paid more attention to the lyrics
I found this to be a bit tiring
Not garbage. Some gold, but also lots of beige
Not entirely consistent, but it had its moments. Mid part 2 was solid
I really really really wanna zig-a-zig-stardust
I can hear you Clem Fandango. Otherwise a bit non-descript, but chill
A bit bland
Entirely unremarkable
Want two get my hour back
Yes
I was somewhat charmed by the eccentricity, but did grow a bit tired by the end
Rockabilly? Don't know - I enjoyed this but knocking downa poin t becuase it felt too long
Maybe sufferred from fatigue from going striaght into this from teh Cramps
I was bored
I listened to this a second time and it seemed like a completely different album. Maybe I was paying more attention
Such a densely packed album
Some interesting stuff, some noise
I punked myself
