Graceland
Paul Simon
1. Didn’t realize the Simon from Simon & Garfunkel made his own music
2. Didn’t realize Call Me Al was from this album
3. Interesting how “pop” back in the 80s had way more folk vibes
4. Surprisingly short album, feels like it was barely getting started and suddenly it ended
5. Gumboots had most similar vibes to Call Me Al, 2nd fav song in the album

Different Class
Pulp
1. Never heard of this band once in my life, but apparently they’re quite popular in Britain?
2. The singer sounds like David Bowie, which is funny that their description on Spotify suggests that their “signature sound” is similar to his, glam rock
3. Oh wait, I’ve heard Common People before. Ali recently did it at a karaoke night. Also apparently this is their most popular song by a large margin (at least in terms of listens on Spotify)
4. Now this feels like an actual album (in terms of length/songs)
5. Definitely an interesting span of genres in this single album
6. On second listen, quite like Disco 2000

Come Away With Me
Norah Jones
1. I’ve apparently heard of her (via liked songs), but only a fairly recent song she put out in 19’
2. Was listening to the start of this on the way to the airport and her initial response was “Oh you won’t like this” because it’s all slow singing you’d fall asleep to 😂
3. Feelin’ The Same Way is more upbeat than the first few, currently my fav on the album
4. This feels like songs you’d listen to at a Jazz Bar in New Orleans or something
5. The songs are very same-y, but overall her voice is phenomenal

Ready To Die
The Notorious B.I.G.
1. Finally, an artist I actually know alot of the discography for
2. Interestingly, the original album ends on Suicidal Thoughts but the Remasters have “Who Shot Ya?” and “Just Playing (Dreams)” to finish it out, apparently this is a frequent thing to add stuff later?
3. There is a certain flow that he is able to consistently do that really gets more emphasis out of words than most rappers I hear
4. RE: Remaster, the same thing happened with Nora Jones’ album, but it’s actually very hard to search on Spotify for “the original” album and the remasters/etc will always take priority or the originals are impossible to find without a direct link
5. “Intro” is overwhelming as hell but maybe that’s kinda supposed to be the point
6. Damn, first song is def “dark” in terms of overall mood, talking about his mom’s cancer, the shitty neighborhoods and things he had to grow up with, it’s just super heavy
7. Idk why, but it’s odd that songs from then don’t explicitly do a “feat. X” so I’m hearing a song like Gimme the Loot and it takes quite a bit of searching to find who is rapping with Biggie (Easy Mo Bee in this example)
8. Jeez, “Gangsta/ster Rap” really used to have a lot of “ya we go out shooting people” and it’s kinda crazy how normalized it was (and kind of still is)
9. That Interlude is… something
10. I’ve heard of a lot of the songs on this album, but my fav new one is The What, 2nd is Respect, 3rd is Unbelievable
11. Did he just say Rudy Giuliani on Everyday Struggle??
12. He has MULTIPLE songs where a “pager” goes off, and it’s actually very anxiety inducing hearing it and trying to figure out where it’s coming from before you realize it’s in the song
13. Big Poppa still slaps to this day

Arrival
ABBA
1. Yet another artist I am much more familiar with, it’s always interesting to me that ABBA is actually Swedish since their vocals/lyrics have such clean English
2. I thought I’d know almost all the songs on this album, but I actually only seem to know about half
3. Looking at Spotify popularity/listens, Dancing Queen is actually the only Top 10 song (in fact #1 by a large margin) of theirs from this album, which also surprised me considering there are a couple other very popular ABBA songs on this album
4. Dancing Queen is still definitely my favorite song on this album and even of all their discography
5. Not as a negative to the album/ABBA, but the vibes and tones of the songs are very repetitive with barely any change-up it feels across all of the songs
6. Of the songs I don’t know on the album, I quite liked Tiger the most

Timeless
Goldie
1. Never heard of Goldie in my life, but apparently he’s a very prominent EDM figure?
2. Wtf, the first song is 21min… this is going to be a long listen
3. Ah ok, you can already tell 5min into the first song that he’s a D&B artist
4. Timeless sounds like multiple songs/ideas/beats spliced together, dude just needs to stick with one or split into multiple tracks
5. This is the exact music I imagine was played at the 90s rave clubs
6. Ok, State of Mind has some more jazzy funk to it, maybe it won’t all be the same D&B rave music
7. Sea of Tears has weird as hell background sounds
8. Adrift is very vibe-y, liking it a lot
9. Why does every song have to be more than like 6min…
10. I can see why Inner City Life is his most popular song, it’s definitely the most easy listening and good bops
11. I’m a huge EDM fan, but D&B tends to be one of my least preferred genre of it. The album overall is good, but it has the same negatives I have from most D&B in that it feels like the songs blend together a lot and there’s not much variety overall

The Infotainment Scan
The Fall
1. I think I’ve heard of The Fall before but never really listened to much of their music
2. This Spotify artist synopsis is so much word vomit about literally everything this band ever did
3. Seems that the band is centered around the vocalist and has actually been playing for the better part of 40 years until he died in 2018
4. His vocals are very drawl-y where you can barely understand half of his words, not exactly my preferred
5. Smith often goes on long free-form “rants” which remind me kind of LCD Soundsystem (who apparently is one of the “acknowledged disciples” of Smith)
6. It’s weird that despite being a 70s post-punk band (which had their heyday in the 80s) that the album chosen is from the early 90s which seems past their “prime” (artist description even mentions this album didn’t sell that well but did have good reviews) maybe it’s just the “I actually like this niche album of theirs”
7. The only Top 10 song of theirs in terms of listens/popularity is Lost In Music while everything else doesn’t even have that many plays. To me it’s… fine? If this is the greatest the album has to offer maybe The Fall just isn’t for me
8. Glam-Racket is kind-of good? I like the music backing and the vocals are slightly more interpretable
9. I find this album somewhere between the middle-ground of I don’t really care for it, it’s actually not that bad, and maybe I kinda like a couple of songs. Overall pretty mid to be honest I suppose
10. The League of Bald Headed Men is kinda fun and good guitar backing
11. Feels like there isn’t much variation in this album in terms of music backing or vocals, which is kinda disappointing reading the band’s synopsis about how they blend across so many genres
12. What the hell, Mancunian means from Manchester??

C'est Chic
CHIC
1. At first I didn't know who CHIC was, and then I heard Le Freak and immediately realized that it was "that" band
2. Damn apparently they are still touring? Or at least touring very recently
3. Seems like 2 of the 3 main members have had a hand in A LOT of popular music for decades
4. I'm sad that this is yet another "short" album, only 8 songs and 41 minutes. Why can't THIS be the 2 hour album??
5. Nile Rodgers really knows how to get around the music business and I'd actually heard of his name before but never knew he was a member of this band
6. I definitely know a few of these songs, but also don't know a number of them as well
7. The guitar backings of Rodgers is top fucking tier (also very reminiscent of recent songs he's featured in, man's still got it)
8. Savoir Faire I quite like for the background music despite the lack of vocals
9. While not every song in this album is a certified banger, the overall vibe and quality is definitely the best I've heard so far in all the albums we've listened to (one that I'd assuredly say deserves the "1001 albums to listen to" title
10. At Last I Am Free is my least favorite due to the generally slow nature and less "dance" vibes
11. Of the songs I wasn't already familiar with, Savoir Faire was my favorite
12. Fun little language tidbit, but "chic" has the same etymological roots as "chicanery" despite them being almost entirely different words nowadays
