Album Summary

Off the Wall is the fifth solo studio album by American singer Michael Jackson, released on August 10, 1979, by Epic Records. It was Jackson's first album released through Epic Records, the label he recorded under until his death in 2009, and the first produced by Quincy Jones, whom he met while working on the 1978 film The Wiz. Several critics observed that Off the Wall was crafted from disco, pop, funk, R&B, soft rock and Broadway ballads. Its lyrical themes include escapism, liberation, loneliness, hedonism and romance. The album features songwriting contributions from Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Rod Temperton, Tom Bahler, and David Foster, alongside three tracks penned by Jackson himself. Between 1972 and 1975, Jackson released a total of four solo studio albums with Motown as part of The Jackson 5 franchise: Got to Be There (1972), Ben (1972), Music & Me (1973) and Forever, Michael (1975). Before recording his next album, which came to be Off the Wall, Jackson desired to create a record not sounding like a Jacksons record, but rather showcasing creative freedom and individualism. Off the Wall peaked at number three on the Billboard Top LPs & Tapes chart and number one on the Top Black Albums chart, staying at number one on the latter for 16 weeks, and was an enormous critical success. Five singles were released from the album. Jackson wrote three songs, including the Billboard Hot 100 number-one single "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough", his first solo number-one single in the United States since "Ben" seven years prior. The second single, "Rock with You", also topped the chart. With following singles "Off the Wall" and "She's Out of My Life" also reaching the US top 10, Jackson became the first solo artist to have four singles from the same album reach the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. Off the Wall was a significant departure from Jackson's previous work for Motown and was hailed as a major breakthrough for him. In retrospect, writers have hailed it a landmark release of the disco era and one of the greatest albums of all time. Critics often debate whether it or Thriller is Jackson's best album. Off the Wall has sold over 20 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. On February 2, 2021, it was certified 9× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in the US. At the 1980 Grammy Awards, it was nominated for two Grammy Awards, with Jackson winning Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male for "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough". In 2008, Off the Wall was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

I don't give extra stars to men who take advantage of kids.

tipico michael jackson, funkeo movido, aburrido, 1/5

A classic

I didn’t hate this

Starts off with some classics but fades a bit towards the end.

What an ethereal yet powerful voice! Paired with top class production and a skillful mixture and weaving of instruments. Girlfriend is crazy… the way he says girlfriend…and boyfriend…and all the other words. Damn. And the squeal on Don’t Stop that jumpstarts the album! Awesome.

Goat King of pop He was 20 when he did this album so he probably wasn’t a nonce by then The Rythm on rock with you may never be topped again

Seriously funky. So funky it’s hard not to get weird looks from your coworkers because you are funking too hard

I remember the day I tried to listen to this after being a superfan of Michael Jackson’s later music when I was younger and was blown away. Incredible music

It's fine.

10/10! An album I've listened to endless times. Michael Jackson's music was my introduction to the world of music. I was obsessed. One of the greatest albums of all time.

Highlights: Rock With You Off the Wall Get on the Floor

Side a is top quality but the other half is sloppier. Maybe 3,5 but not quite 4/5

Apparently King of Pop was Prince of Pop while making this record... Smoother than previous Jackson albums on this list but still this is too sweet for me.

#508 / 1089 Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ✅ Even tho this is very much a disco flavoured album, it's got so much groove that it's nearly impossible to sit still while listening. It's got some soul, R'n'B and funky vibes all the way through. Michael's flair comes through so much already, his mannerisms are mostly all there already and while Thriller was his last album I personally like, his earlier stuff is really enjoyable too. It's too disco for me, so I can't give it a full fiver, but strong 4/5.

Hell yeah, grade school favorite! This helped turn me into a competent dancer (or so I thought at the time). This album helped boost his status as he ascended to the throne to the King Of Pop. "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" (1B+ listens) is a definitive 70's disco/R&B song, and the 6 minute version is how it was meant to be heard. The percussion and mix is absolutely perfect. Follow that up with "Rock With You" (1B+ listens), which is just a cool song anyone can get into (except you MJ haters - Hate the man, not the music!). "Workin' Day And Night" (130M) was another solid hit, "Off The Wall" (244M) has some "Thriller" DNA and "She's Out Of My Life" (82M) was such a classic song for a pre-teen with all kinds of crushes and heartbreaks. "Girlfriend" (32M) is a good pop song, reminiscent of his early 80's stuff (think "The Girl Is Mine" with McCartney). I think I would have left "I Can't Help It" (91M) on the cutting room floor. Kudos go to Quincy Jones for his guidance and ear for laying down a sound. Hits, Influence, Longevity, this one has it all. 4 stars as it's not as good as "Thriller" or "Bad" but it has some fantastic songs that are timeless.

1979. Fifth studio album. Its lyrical themes include escapism, liberty, hedonism and romance. The album features songwriting contributions from Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Rod Temperton, Tom Bahler, and David Foster, alongside three tracks penned by Jackson himself.

Just find it a bit cringe and only like the upbeat songs

I can’t listen to music made my ped*philes.

Despite how prolific he is, I don't think I've listened to a Michael Jackson album from front to back before. It'll be interesting over the course of this listening journey to see how different albums feel over time and across genres. I don't tend to listen to pop albums often, if at all. While I listen to the odd track, I almost don't understand what a pop album is supposed to entail. Does it have the same suggestion of themes, narrative, etc. you might expect from a hip hop album? Does it need to be sequenced mindfully or just have banger record after banger record? Starting with this one is interesting too - there are records I've heard on this album that I've heard before, but not the projects themselves. Or perhaps even songs I've heard fragments of, but not heard the full song before. The album feels funky - you can definitely hear it being an inspiration for newer works like Silk Sonic, etc. The ballad on the album (She's Out of My Life) almost feels out of place on it as a result because its largely so full bodied and funky in production. Definitely feels like a rainy day album - one to lift the spirits. Some that could get a dancefloor shifting for sure. Favourite songs: - Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough - Rock With You - Off the Wall - Burn This Disco Out

Incroyable

If Jackson’s ‘80s content sounds a bit dated to a modern audience, this album might have sounded a bit behind the times at point of release, as a disco album just as the genre was on its last legs. However, that might contribute to it being the least frustrating listen of his three albums on the list for me! There are some of Jackson’s best known tracks here in Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough an end title track, which are undeniably catchy pop songs. Overall it’s still aged about as well as a night out at Studio 54, but it’s an alright listen.

This is simply a great pop record. Excellent production throughout, and memorable songs. "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough" and "Rock With You" get the album off to the best possible start, and every song afterwards, while not quite as good, is still very enjoyable. My other favourite is "I Can't Help It" co-written by Stevie Wonder, which probably explains why I like it so much.

A really good funk/disco album, and effectively Michael’s real solo debut, with some all-time classics among its ten tracks. ‘Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough’, ‘Rock with You’ and the title track are the main highlights, but the rest of side one and the closer are really solid too. It doesn’t quite hit 5 stars due to a run of more middling (dare I say corny?) songs on side two, but there’s nothing close to a complete dud here. Michael sounds great, of course, but so does the band; there are some killer basslines on this album in particular.

Always wary of listening to MJ due to the realistic possibility he was a nonce. That said, this is a pretty good album and plenty of decent pop songs. Although points taken off due to him being a wrong 'un.

My favourite Michael Jackson album atm.

Get a little tired of the sound by the very end, but another very strong showing, solid 4 territory, maybe 4.5

Off The Wall - Michael Jackson (1979) This is still the early times of MJ's solo carrer, even though this albums marks his first collaboration with Quincy Jones. Not bad at all, but the best is yet to come. ⭐⭐⭐ 7/10

Favourite - Off the Wall Least Favourite - She's out of my life Surprised Me - Girlfriend Overall Notes: - At 6mins long, 'Don't stop 'til you get enough', while a Michael Jackson disco classic, lacks the intrigue to justify such an obnoxious track length. This factor, alongside maintaining a fairly repetitive topline, makes the track fairly skippable compared to other MJ tunes of a similar status.

Classic MJ. Unfortunately tainted.

with this album checked on my list, we can officially call our journey with mj's "big three" done. jackson's first release by epic records, michael wanted to refresh his image after officially going solo, distant from the creatively limiting jackson family and motown; he collaborated with producer quincy jones (he had previously worked with michael on the wiz) and a bunch of different songwriters to cook up the ultimate disco album, released during the year when the genre officially "died". whenever it's loud dance tracks, modest shuffles or slow and sentimental songs, this album really showcases the advanced technicalities of michael's performance abilities. every person who worked on this really ensured that most every track suited michael specifically, it takes a lot of work and a bit of genius to figure out that sort of thing. songs never overstay their welcome. even with disco being heavy on repetition and songs playing for a very, very long time, you never get tired of it. i could listen to this album every single day, every other hour and i would never ever get exhausted by it. this record running from beginning to end... i don't wanna say it's perfect, no album is. but it's near-perfect. this album may not be as legendary as thriller but it's a very very close second in terms of that. off the wall floods your malleable brain with dopamine.

Is it ok to listen to MJ? Great tracks though

He peaked with this one Rating: 9/10

Great disco album. Lots of fun songs to dance to.

Can't decide whether i prefer this or Thriller. The front half of this is basically all bangers but the deeper cuts in the second half are fantastic also.

Apart from the killer opening track and title track - which are terrific, this is an album of fairly average pop soul tunes

We had Michael’s album “Bad” earlier in the list, whilst that album is really Good, “Off The Wall” is on another level. This album doesn’t have the pressure of following up “Thriller” and it’s also pre that insanity. This is just a GREAT late Disco album but done in Michael Jackson’s style. “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” & “Rock With You” are a 1 ,2, PUNCH on this album and describe kinda the rest of the trajectory. First is the fun fast song and the other is the smooth but groovy track. “She’s Out Of My Life” could be seen as Corny but it has a moment near the end where Michael just Screams it out on a note. “Girlfriend” is the Paul McCartney written song (he’d later feature on Thriller) and it’s kinda goofy but Michael just sells it, his vocals really make a song This is a classic album and even if I’m nitpicking it’s just nitpicks “Thriller” has the overplayed tracks but is still great “Bad” is a good follow up but lacking in way “Dangerous” is my personal favourite track wise but is way too long and not consistent But “Off The Wall” is just a great album and doesn’t have all the hype that some of the other releases had. This is Michael in his Youth still figuring it out before MEGA STARDOM. Let’s just say he figured out a lot on this record. 5/5

yeHEEEE OUW!

Possibly MJ's best album, which I think a lot of people are coming around to

Disclaimer: Michael Jackson and Donnie Fat Orange Trump are pedos. This album is quite top heavy--it starts with the best two songs. It's a strong debut from an emerging solo artist that would portend more music to come. Top tracks: "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," "Rock with You," "She's Out of My Life," "Off the Wall"

--Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough...mama-se, mama-sa, mama-coo-sa! mama-se, mama-sa, mama-coo-sa! mama-se, mama-sa, mama-coo-sa! --Rock with You...head boppin' booty shaker --Workin' Day and Night...slick, straightforward funk --Get on the Floor...absolutely murderous bass line --Off the Wall...this Rod Temperton could write a hit --Girlfriend...pleasant but cheesy as hell. of course this was penned by Sir Paul --She's Out of My Life...synth/keys are nice but otherwise no thanks --I Can't Help It...more solid bass but nothing special --It's the Falling in Love...funky duet --Burn This Disco Out...fun closer

A strong debut, and I have always said it is better than Thriller. This one rocks and it makes you dance. From the first tracks the energy is up and it rarely lets go. The songs are built for movement. The grooves are tight, the bass lines pull you in, and Jackson sounds light, confident and completely at home. There is a joy in the performances that feels natural rather than forced. Even the smoother moments still carry a clear rhythmic drive that keeps the album moving. Quincy Jones’s production is clean and bright without becoming cold. Everything sits in the right place, the arrangements stay sharp, and the sound still feels alive decades later. Nothing is overcooked. It just works. Off the Wall is pure pleasure. Danceable, well made, and full of the kind of easy brilliance that made Jackson impossible to ignore.

Great album

Hard to separate the music from the man

Loved it

To me it always sounds like he's singing 'keep on, to the Post Office'.... anyway, never mind. 🤣. Pretty good pop album.

Hard for me to separate the music and the man …

Disco is such a fun genre; I had a good time listening to this one.

Nowhere near Thriller imo

It has come time for us to contend with the career of Michael Jackson. I will say, I had never sat down and listened to this album, but I knew *several* songs off of it. But that just comes with the territory. Michael Jackson may be the most recognizable non-religious figure who has ever lived. And this is his solo debut. I'm interested in comparing this with Thriller when that rolls around. Thriller has like 6 of the most popular songs ever written on it, but I have to wonder if being a synonym for pop culture at large has taken from it's sense of individual identity. Off The Wall on the other hand still has like 3 mega hits, but it *definitely* maintains an identity. It's worth mentioning that this album, and thus MJ's solo career, begins with a nearly perfect run of 5 consecutive songs. Each of which, even individually, is one of the most cathartic, free, and joyful funk/pop/disco songs ever. It's genuinely a tremendous, staggering achievement. I unfortunately don't think the other 5 songs on here can quite live up, which isn't to say that they're bad, just that the second half of Off The Wall isn't exactly the first half of Off The Wall. The energy and fun factor are way down to accommodate some ballads, but the writing just isn't *quite* on the same level. Especially on Girlfriend and She's out Of My Life. On the other hand, I Can't Help It is the best case scenario for a slower cut, with some cues from jazz and a gorgeous arrangement. And at the end, Burn This Disco Out gets us some energy back, but doesn't quite capture the magic of those first 5 songs. Despite the dip in the second half, this is still a phenomenal record. And I can easily see how it kick started maybe the most iconic career of any solo artist.

Didn't want to listen to an album by someone who abused children, so I listened to an album not on this list instead. Apologies to the Queen Mary by Wolf Parade is an electric rock slapintheface full of bangers and singalongs. I love this album and other than a couple slow songs that aren't always my jam, this album completely delivers. 1/10 for MJ 8/10 for Wolf Parade.

Listening session: october 7th, while buying groceries Listened to before: yes, listened to this album many times Thoughts: there’s not much that beats Michael Jacksons early music (Off The Wall/Thriller era). I’m a sucker for the funky aspect of this album Favourite tracks: Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough, Workum’ Day and Night & I Can’t Help It

Two absolutely barnstorming wedding favourites to open the album followed by some other songs. I would love to give 4 here on the basis of "Don't Stop" alone, but don't love the rest of the album enough. 3.49 needed here.

Favorite Song: I Can’t Help It Least Favorite: Girlfriend

This was a joy to revisit. Feel good disco from a solo Jackson. How do you produce something this good on the night shift after working a full day job. Certainly was working day and night but for an absolute triumph.

I like it

Sorry can't listen to this one

FAVO: Dont stop til you get enough, Rock with you, Workin day and night, Off the wall, I cant help it

Absolutely stunning album. Quincy Jones is a damn genius for this album alone, and every single track is memorable, groovy, and pieces together perfectly. Favorite track has to be Rock With You, but there's no clunkers here.

Separating the art from the artist.. This was funky! Especially the beginning of the album

This was Jackson trying to prove himself. Knocked it out the park. Just a fun dance record. 4 stars

I appreciate cohesion and think this album exhibits it much better than Thriller. Also this one has more of my favorite Michael Jackson songs than his other albums.

Very disco-y. First two songs are classics. Seems to fade off on second half. 3 out of 5.

Good album. It has 3 major hits in my book: "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough", "Rock With You" and "She's Out of My Life".

Fantastiskt album. Sista spåret är verkligen: go out with a bang.

Everyone has heard Michael Jackson so this isn't new to me. I have heard most of the songs before and while they are fun and catchy they aren't my favorites of his. Its easy to listen to and makes you happy and some days that's all you want from music.

- A lot more funky than I was anticipating - Fun but not really my vibe - Workin' Day and Night is a vibe ngl (Not playlist worthy tho :( ) - Is this considered Disco..? - Bro why does 'Off the Wall' have some evil ass laugh - Added 'Girlfriend' and 'She's Out of My Life' to my playlist - Actually really enjoying this album - Considering the last song is called 'Burn This Disco Out', I think it can be considered Disco - Didn't add many songs :/

"What do you call five fingers grasping a small boy's penis? The Jackson Five." - Neil Hambuger

The pedophilia of it all does put a damper on the album

7/10 - vintage Michael Jackson, brings an old school charm although not as good as his 80s stuff

First side is banging definitive disco but some of the teeny bopper tunes feel like they are out of place.

THE Michael Jackson album in my opinion - the next few see him try and engineer the perfect album on paper but this is the perfect album in practice. It's also the perfect disco album - a-side is all 10/10 classics that emphasize the beats and funky elements, second half breathes in some variety. It's not too short or too long. It sounds forward thinking and you can link in 80s and later R&B, whereas a lot of 70s disco like Chic kinda feels a bit exclusive to that time this pushes forward in a really interesting way

Off The Wall

Michael's first album with Quincy on production. Fantastic, dare I say just as good as Thriller. The title track is a great way to kick off the B-side

Some great songs front loaded on this album and some okay songs finishing it off

Just a brilliant piece of music but what else would you expect from the king of pop. Just a proper feel good album.

I refuse to be a contrarian here, Michael Jackson is good, but I am a little underwhelmed by this album. Great production, great vocals (obviously), but many of these songs really drag the album. 3.5/5

Pretty good. Classic Michael.

This is one of those rare albums where the huge hit singles are actually my least favorite parts. Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough and Rock with You are obviously classics, but I’ve heard them so many times that I was way more interested in digging into the deeper cuts and some of the lesser-known songs. It also doesn’t help that the album versions of those hits feel a little too long, especially Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough pushing past six minutes. But overall, this is still a really enjoyable album. You’ve obviously got plenty of disco here, but you can also hear Michael Jackson pushing toward the pop and R&B sound that would become such a huge part of his music going forward. I especially liked the second half, where the album starts moving away from the more straightforward disco sound and gives you some different styles to work with. There really aren’t any weak songs here. At the same time, nothing completely blew me away either. It’s basically an album full of four-out-of-five songs, which makes this a very, very solid 4 out of 5. Fun album, and surprisingly, it was the songs I didn’t already know that I enjoyed the most.

This came out when I was in junior high school, and it was huge. The emergence of that amazing little kid singing with his brothers as a handsome young man with solo songs all over the radio was unexpected. I'm sorry that he didn't see the beauty in his looks the way we did.

BIllie Jean is 17th on the Billboard right now, so lets review the only remaining unrated album from the "big 3" in Michael's discography. Off the Wall is perfect... ... ... perfectly adequate. Might be a sacrilegious thing to say, but I genuinely can't say much other than this album being very funky, very swanky and very... disco. The whole album exudes some real groovy melodies that I just cant help but dance to, but just as you don't really delve deeper into the music while you're at the club, neither can I when I listen to this.

Rate: 9.5/10.

God i love michael. The orchestraaaa Okay ballad (she's out of my life)

Containing "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough". The rest of the album is the typical Michael Jackson sound but nothing that hooks me. 2,5

Unbelievable production. So much space within the mix for all of the elements to breathe and shine through. Some unreal guitar playing throughout.

fantastic grooves and vocals.....very funky too!!
