Album Summary
Foo Fighters is the debut studio album by American rock band Foo Fighters, released on July 4, 1995, through Roswell and Capitol Records. Dave Grohl wrote and recorded the entire album himself, with the assistance of producer Barrett Jones at Robert Lang Studios in Seattle, Washington, in 1994. He said that he recorded the album just for fun, describing it as a cathartic experience to recover from the suicide of Nirvana bandmate Kurt Cobain. After Grohl completed the recordings, he chose the name "Foo Fighters" for the project to hide his identity, and passed cassette copies of the sessions to personal friends. When the tapes attracted record label interest, Grohl signed with Capitol and recruited a full band to perform the songs live. The album was promoted through extensive tours and six singles, two of which were accompanied by music videos. Upon its release, Foo Fighters earned positive reviews, praising its songwriting and performances, and was also a commercial success, becoming the band's second-best-selling album in the United States. It also peaked within the top five of charts of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Some people say this isn’t really a Foo Fighters album—it’s basically just Dave Grohl. But you know what? Whatever. It says Foo Fighters on the cover, so we’re going with it. This is another biased one for me because there’s something incredibly nostalgic about this sound. It just reminds me of a beautiful summer day in the ’90s. I love the fuzzy, grungy guitars, the smashing drums, and that rawness that still feels connected to Nirvana while also sounding like Grohl trying to figure out what comes next. There’s obviously a lot of emotion behind it, and even when I’m not paying much attention to the lyrics, the sound alone puts me in a certain mood. I’m only giving it four stars because it doesn’t do a whole lot beyond that sound. The rhythms and overall approach can start to feel pretty similar from song to song, and I wish there were a little more variety. But honestly, when I like the sound this much, I can forgive a lot. Give me those fuzzy guitars and pounding drums, and I’m pretty much sold.
Raw and almost unproduced this sounds a lot like Nirvana demos - which some of the tracks basically are. Some great songs here like the classics "Big me" and "I'll stick around" and they (or rather Dave alone) are far away from the radio friendly Dad rock the name would stand for in later years. Still, not their best album, that would be the next one.
A good rocking out album - maybe listen to when cleaning the house!?
Not really my thing, but I think a good band for their genre.
I just saw the Foos a couple of months ago for the second time. Dave Grohl is the epitome of a rocker - he gives everything he can to each song, and just keeps giving. Amazing energy and passion. Not to mention talent - as he plays the hell out of every instrument. This first album is not my favorite. I like how the band developed. But, none of that happens without this first venture forth by Dave. Solid 4.
Inte min stil, blev stressad
Track By Track This is a Call - This is all him! I hadn’t realised that he plays essentially all the instruments on this album. That Foo Fighters really started with him. Sounds very raw but also flowing and polished. Good song. I’ll Stick Around - Carrying on the energy brilliantly. Driving forward! Great flying energy on this track. A fan. I like the punky-grungy energy on it as well. Reminds me of the echoes of Nirvana. That drawl and production. Big Me - This is like a cute, jangly ‘90s movie montage. Lovely song. Works very well. Great chords throughout and really liked the end one. Alone + Easy Target - Again the Nirvana drawl. Can hear Kurt’s influence on this one. Good echoes on the guitars. Good Grief - More thrashy and very loose. Grinding and grungy energy to this. Good guitar. Not a favourite. Floaty - Liked the intro. Not a huge fan of the melody though. A little jagged and meandering. Kind of apt title though. Weenie Beenie - This is a crunchy one. Verging on metal, particularly with the vocals. They also literally sound metallic, like they’re being filtered through a really crap speaker. Not a big fan of this. Oh, George - A nice float and plane-like quality to the rhythm. Nice vibes. Still leaning into the grungy, thrashy sound. Good guitar. Very simple but effective solo. For All the Cows - Nice switch up. Groovy. Nice melody. Like a poem or something. I do like the softer cuts on this record. X-Static - It reminds me a bit of punk. Or at least influenced by it. It’s almost like noise. Works well as moody, grungy ambience. Wattershed - More thrash, too much thrash. Did not like particularly. Exhausted - A decent enough closer but so hissy and fuzzy! Maybe that’s the point though as a lot of this album is fairly raw. Overall Review: My birth year! This album is only a tiny bit older than me I think. Enjoyed the sound, a little more than I thought I would. Although not every track did it for me. Especially the thrashier metal scream-o ones. But fairly decent overall. 3.2/5 Favourite Songs: Big Me, For All the Cows
Mixed bag, but can really hear the potential! None of the tracks are terrible, but not a lot really set on fire either
Apt that the last song is called Exhausted, eh? Do something original or do something nice x
Great album, especially considering that this is all Dave Grohl only on this album
I'm familiar with the Foo Fighters and currently have 14 songs liked by them on Spotify. This is mostly just the songs of there's I've heard on the radio and liked, since I've never gone deep on any of their specific albums. I've got 2 songs liked already on this one -"This Is a Call" and "I'll Stick Around". I will add that I also have a generally positive impression of Dave Grohl - seems like a pretty cool guy for the most part. Oh yeah, I remember and like "Big Me". Didn't like Weenie Beenie or Wattershed. I ended up liking the first 6 songs plus "X-Static". The rest of these (mostly the 2nd half of this) doesn't really grab me and those songs don't really add much to what's on the rest of this. I'm glad I listened to this - since I added 5 more "new to me" songs to my Spotify library. Liked songs on Spotify: 7/12 Rating: 3/5
Good
Some bands struggle for years to develop their sound; Foo Fighters nailed bland hookless riff-rock in one.
3.25
I really liked it at first listen but it seemed so mood dependent. I did another listen through and was less in the mood. At first it was a 4 and now I think a 3 but either way if you’re looking for this genre this is good stuff
RIP Taylor Hawkins. I genuinely was surprised that how good of a drummer he really was. Dave Grohl also can really do it all. A lot of it was nostalgic from listening with my dad in the car. The only major critique I have is that it was one dimensional. Pretty simple production along with simple lyrics.
The sound was kind of uniform, but I like that sound and I think in the space of like kind of punk noise rock this was a fun and creative album. I give it a three except for the story about where it came from and who it is give me an extra star for that.
Pretty much sums up my view of football fighters: a couple of great songs hidden within an ocean of nothingness
Dave Grohl unleashed. While it wasn’t quite Nirvana, it was surprisingly good and perhaps at the time the next best thing. The Foos arguably produced bigger and poppier albums but never one that approached the visceral energy of this debut.
I always chose to ignore the Foo Fighters as I considered them just an American MOR rock band. Apparently this is just Dave Grohl. Didn’t change my Foo Fighters assessment but well done him for playing everything. 2/5
Bad bland
Enjoyed a bit the same all songs didn’t listen to the end
7/10
The week it took Dave Grohl to record every part and sing must have been an extraordinarily over caffeinated one. Pretty good though, nothing mind blowing.
Ovo je vise moj dir
Some nice dirty riffs but I feel like this doesn’t stand out from the other post-grunge music of the time. Fav track: I’ll Stick Around. Look, it’s a decent debut. I feel if you can detach any Nirvana comparisons, you’ll appreciate it a lot more.
Nirvana tribute band
The humbler beginnings of huge bands are usually far superior to me and this is no exception.

Really a 3.5 Dave Grohl doing every instrument?? Wild. I’ll Stick Around Floaty X-Static
It’s fun to listen to but nothing outstanding
Solid
Excelente
Ok but nothing crazy
Foo Fighters – Foo Fighters (1995) Rating: 4.5/5 Short Review: Dave Grohl casually recording almost an entire album himself after Nirvana’s breakup is pretty remarkable. It’s raw, energetic, and packed with crunchy guitars and ridiculously catchy hooks. There’s something charming about how unpolished it sounds compared to later Foo Fighters albums. Not every song is memorable, but the best ones absolutely rip. Favorite Track: I’ll Stick Around
OUTRO CLAMOROSA, COME UN ALTRO PAIO DI TRACCE DI CUI NON RICORDO IL NOME. SAREBBE DA 3 MA DO 4 PER TORNARCI. 4/5
Never was s big fan in the 90s but they grow a little...can really see in some songs the nirvana origins.
Not their best album but i ended up digging how garage-band sounding this was. I almost got Weezer vibes from it at times and that's not something I expect from the Foo Fighters. Will listen again.
obviously i know about foo fighters. and obviously i've heard their music. but like..... what the fuck do u mean the band was literally just dave grohl for the debut album??? as far as folks who've done the one man band thing go, he's no stevie wonder or mike oldfield, but this is still pretty impressive, at least on that front. other than that tho.... it gets a little samey, and other than grohl's distinctive voice, it can feel a bit generic too, especially around the start and end. there's a few tracks i do really like, mostly the middle section with "alone + easy target", "floaty", and "good grief", which is honestly a fucking banger with the kind of driving guitars that so much alt rock ran on thru the late 90s into the mid 00s or so. but for the rest.... save for maybe "exhausted" (the collapse into feedback and static absolutely fucks), idk...... it's a sound i like, but not the best examples of it. i'd probably go back to this, but i'd only really be locking in for the middle of it. even if the one man band thing is pretty impressive.
Impressive that Dave Grohl made this essentially by himself. It sounds great, though the songwriting is hit-or-miss, with 3-4 standout tracks and a few that do nothing for me.

Opens with the fingernails song from my childhood. Good rock, although it could use some more variety.
Shockingly solid listen all the way through.
I think I liked Colour and the Shape more, but I haven't listened to it for a while. Although the songs from that album have stuck with me more than from this one.
Love Dave. Love the album. I would’ve preferred to see There Is Nothing Left To Lose on this list.
I listened to this one a bunch during high school.
It’s a heck of an experiment, Dave.
1995. Mid-Uni. Long hair attempt underway (but not quite working). I was well into Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden and the like. So this would have slotted in perfectly. Which makes it all the more baffling that it (and everything they’ve done since) passed me by completely. But coming to it 30 years late, this seems like a good debut album. Maybe they’ll amount to something.
Never really got into Foo Fighters then or since. Pretty impressive given Dave Grohl played all the instruments.
Apart from track 1 - just not my cup of tea.
Favorite Track: Good Grief
Rock&Roll Yeaha!
Eh, I like foo fighters now?
Fun time
Still an album I don't care much about. It's way worse than Nirvana, it's not the worst the Foo Fighters will do, it's not the best either. It's generic alternative rock, and I don't see any interest in listening to it once more.
Really disappointed by this. The Colour and The Shape is way better
These guys definitely got better
Couple of the lyrics were nice but I didn't really feel moved.
Saw the foo live like 2 weeks ago, very good show, this is top 3 in their discography for sure. Great energy all through.
“I’m not a slacker. I’m just on a really long holiday.” Reality Bites (1994)
2/5 ok
Very influential
It's not bad, there were some songs which I liked, but most of the album, it's a kind of music I am not that into. Too noisy most of the time, I liked some of the melodies.
Beetje heftig soms
true rock album - not my favorite but i understand it's importance
is there a reason why some albums are so great in the first half and then complete shit in the second one?
This is the Pablo Honey of the Foo Fighters discography for me, and not just because it's their debut. For one thing, only one track particularly stands out from the rest, with everything else being largely forgotten about. Then there's the fact that thankfully the music gets a whole lot better in the next album and beyond. Lastly, whilst it's good, it's not all that great in my opinion, leaving a rather generic taste in the mouth. They would have been better off putting the second Foo album in this list.
Honestly pretty damn impressed
I'm a Foo Fighters fan, so this album was defo for me. Have always loved their style and their debut album totally delivered. Exhausted was my fav song and first listen of the album. Alone + Easy Target and For All the Cows were my other highlights
I will say it's impressive that Dave Grohl created this whole album by himself and then later put together a band to go on tour with later. Like most Foo Fighters music it's a bit lackluster and boring at times. I didn't think I would know any of the songs on here but surprised myself.
Though familiar with the hits from this album, it's my first time hearing it as a whole. Honestly this album sounds more like a demo tape than a completed release. And I think that is both the strength and weakness of this album. It has a raw energy and spontaneity to it. But at the same time it would definitely benefit from the polish that comes from studio production and additional musicians. The result is great energetic songs on the one end, but lackluster unfinished sounding songs on the other. I definitely prefer Foo Fighters later work; 2011's Wasting Light is one of my favorite albums of that year. And at its best this debut foreshadows greater things to come.
I’ve heard a decent amount of Foo Fighters here and there and felt it’s all pretty solid. I would say the same for this, their debut, as it’s a good mix of the sounds from Grohl’s early work with Nirvana with a brighter tone and approach. This varies from track to track, naturally, as the band dips their toes into a few prominent rock sounds, from what I can tell. 1 listen Favorite Tracks: Exhausted, This Is a Call, I’ll Stick Around
There are several bands of this ilk that I choose over Foo Fighters. But this is still very good.
good
Tynn, tynn 4er.
3+. Helt greit, men litt kjedelig. Treffer meg ikke helt.
Klink 4 her.
Ikke noe spesielt å melde her
Top : This Is a Call Flop : Oh, George
This is a band I always wanted to like more than I do. I like this style, I like this sound; but for some reason Foo Fighters just does nothing for me. I don't dislike them, but I just can't get into them. I'll never turn them off from whatever's playing, but I won't go and specifically play them either.
I like the drums on this album. And doesn’t that make sense? 4 Boolean: True
Low 4
3.5
I'm a pretty decent size Foo Fighters fan, when Dave Grohl fan... I can't help but think the reason this album was picked that was because after the death of Kurt Cobain, thus ending Nirvana, dave went full McCartney and decided to do it all himself, with a little help from a friend. It's obviously no *McCartney I*, but for the person who was neither The Voice the writer or even the lead guitarist of the band he was in I think he did a pretty damn good job. And I like the fact that it doesn't sound like he's trying to be the second coming of Nirvana in fact he probably has more variety of sounds on this album then either Nirvana had on theirs or what he would have on a lot of his later work. I can't say this my favorite Foo Fighters album but I think it's a darn good start. It also not my least either. Some songs really point the way that he would go, but I think the ones that don't give it a characters all its own. It is a bit front heavy it seems like all the best songs and all the singles are right there at the top but it's a great ride all the way through 8.5 ★★★★
I do generally like Foo Fighters. This is not their best album, but it is solid. 4 stars
3.5/5
I think this is a pretty rad album. In a way it sort of sets the stage for alternative rock after grunge, but it sounds a lot better than pretty much everything we classify as post-grunge. It was sort of mind-blowing the first time I heard this that Dave Grohl was in bands for almost 10 years where he was neither the vocalist or primary songwriter, because he seems like a natural for both. Grohl has a great sense of melody and the songs here are super catchy throughout. "This is a Call", "I'll Stick Around", and "Big Me" have become 90s alt-rock classics at this point, but there's a ton of other great tunes here -- "Floaty", "Wattershed", "Exhausted", and "Oh, George" are all standouts. 4.5 stars.
Not my favourite Foo Fighters album. They have better ones such as The Colour And The Badger, There Is Nothing Left To Badger, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Badgers and Badger Highways… Concrete & Badger. Most of their other ones really except their newest one. I’ve felt a bit less about Dave Grohl ever since it was found he had a secret love badger child with a much younger badger who wasn’t his wife. So hard on the loving devoted wife who’s had three badger daughters with Grohl already.
Alternative yacht rock. Talent musicians making music to make money and not to fulfill any passion for music. The epitome if soulless
It’s okay! Not bad just not my jam
Whilst I like some Foo Fighters, I never really liked this album. Just feels dreary.... or perhaps a reflection of Grohl's grief for Cobain.
