amazing. glad its being recommended to others

A very strong beginning. I was thinking it might be a five. The second half is also quite good guess it’s indeed a five. They found some very cool chords and wrote good music.

I can’t say it’s my favorite Foo Fighters album, but when you add together the brilliance of Dave Grohl, the backstory of the album, how it changed alternative rock going forward, and more than a few catchy songs, it’s hard to deny it a place on this list. I can understand arguments for a lower rating, but for me, it was a five from the get-go.

Amazing album. Definitely one of my favorite Foo Fighters albums along with There Is Nothing Left To Lose and The Colour and Shape. It has some of the most underrated tracks on here and it really deserves more credit. It's insane that Dave Grohl played every instrument on this album. It takes a lot of talent and skill to be able to do that. The influence of Kurt Cobain is heard in some of the songs, which isn't surprising, judging by the fact that they were bandmates while Nirvana was still together. Terrific album!

3/4 of this album is absolutely awesome with a few songs that feels like filler/generic rock songs, but we will blame that on the CD era and labels wanting bands to fill up a certain amount of run time. Pretty close to a perfect rock album.

Dave Grohl is a musical genius.

Day844 - it’s crazy dave grohl sat behind the nirvana’s drums with all these awesome songs in his head.

Raw and unpolished Foo Fighters. A superb album with multiple banging songs on it

What an album! Foo fighters only had 2 good ones and The Colour and The Shape was their breakthrough so people often forget how good the debut was. If they stopped after 2 and Dave Grohl didn’t become a Bore-Rock superstar this album would be lauded as an essential classic. The two weaker tracks for me are still decent (big me and for all the cows) and Exhausted is perhaps the best song DG has ever written, certainly musically I think so. It’s a banger 4.7

"It's a shame we have to die my dear. No one' getting out of here.

Dave Grohl is a beast. The man played everything on this album and recorded it in 6 days. It's a little rough and raggedy, but mourning your friend while playing everything by yourself almost off the cuff in 6 days will probably do that to you, so it's to be expected. And it's damn impressive for it to sound as comprehensive and good as it does. Standouts tracks for me are "I'll Stick Around" "Big Me" and "Floaty" For me, its a really solid album. I like the rawness. Now the question is: is this a 4 or 5 star album? A lotttt of people bitch that Foo Fighters is boring. Some of it, sure, could be better. I'd like to see anyone lay down 12 songs on an album in a week playing every instrument yourself and do better. Factor that into this and how big Foo Fighters got, this is a crazy starting point. It's hard to judge this album based on other FF offerings in their catalog. They have "better" work. But considering this standalone, I think I'm going for a 5. It was just a fun, fuzzy listen. It's an insane origin story.

This and The Colour and The Shape are my two favorite Foo albums.

YES! One of my favorites.

Foo Fighters always gonna be one of my rock favorite band.

Mainio levy kaiken kaikkiaan!

This debut album always hits me in the feels. I was hooked back in 1995, and it still holds up. It's awesome watching Dave Grohl find himself, coming out of the shadow of Nirvana's drum kit. As a long time fan, I think this is the Foo Fighters at their most real. It's got this raw vulnerability that's kinda missing in their bigger or more recent hits. Some people say it's basic, but I think that's what makes it so good. It's super cathartic, a solo thing that blends the grunge of the 90s with the catchy power pop that followed. Songs like "This Is A Call" and "I'll Stick Around" still get me, and even the weird tracks like "For All The Cows" and "Exhausted" show off Grohl's talent. This album isn't just good, it's a legend finding his voice. It's a classic for sure.

Not as good as their next album, but still great! "This Is A Call" is the standout here, but "I'll Stick Around" "Alone + Easy Target" "Good Grief" "Floaty" and "X-Static" are all good as well.

What a powerful album. Grohl rules.

A very welcome surprise to see this album on here. Loved it, despite the traumatic memories of being given this for Christmas when I asked for Colour and the Shape. The healing is complete.

Glad this made it on here as it’s often overlooked in favour of bigger more commercial Foo Fighters albums. Incredible really that Grohl created a unique and distinctive style for the band on this album which persists to this day.

Foo Fighters is an absolutely fantastic album. I've always been aware of the Foo Fighters (honestly who hasn't been?) including some songs of this album, in particular the first three with me hearing This Is a Call and Big Me on my local alt rock station and hearing I'll Stick Around back in high school when Spotify would recommend me that song. I think that every song on this album was an absolutely great listen with some really good guitars, and some very solid vocals which fit these songs perfectly. And there is not one single song that i dislike here as they are all incredibly great. This album really showed that even after Nirvana ended, Dave Grohl never stopped making great music. Best Song: Good Grief Worst Song: Big Me Side Note: I also think it's really impressive that Dave Grohl was the only musician on this album (except for Greg Dulli who played an additional guitar on X-Static)

I love it.

Where it all began…solid from start to finish.

10/10 album for sure. This one is a no skip for sure, you can hear alot of nirvana influence in this but there is a unique character to it aswell, songs like ill stick around, oh george and for all the cows are very well put together.just a good album from a good rock band.

Loistava levy, muttei FF:n paras. Silti: 4,75/5.

Absolutely storming debut. One of the first albums I listened to all the way through; luckily, it's pretty much killer from soup to nuts. An easy 5.

I bought a copy of this years ago, and I've probably listened to this and the first three albums, stopping after that. Foo Fighters songs just became something that came and went after Nothing left to lose. I will say that while they(he) probably wrote better songs after this one, this outing has a lovely vulnerability. It's heavy in all the right places and he's not quite comfortable with his voice yet - something I quite enjoy. There is a lot more harmony which seemed to disappear when it came more about 'the rock'. 5 stars.

A great album. Has the base what what Foos would become while also having a heavy Nirvana Influence. Almost a "what could have been" for that group.

One of my favourite all time albums. Not a duffer on it.

FF is simply everything a girl needs

Favourite tracks - This is a Call, Big Me, I’ll Stick Around

No skips

Surprised by the low scores on this one. I think it’s a really enjoyable lofi rock album with some great riffs and choruses. Dave has a great ear for harmonies. It’s a nice change from the grunge that preceded it

This was a big album for me in my team years. Still raw after the death of Kurt Cobain, this new Dave Grohl band (although he ran solo on this one) hooked me early. I have vivid memories of listening to Exhausted in a dark car with the rain making rivers of light on the windshield, tripping out to the music. I love this band, and even if The Colour is the stronger album, I love their debut album.

YES This isn't my favorite Foo Fighters album, but still 5 stars. For me, "There Is Nothing Left to Lose" is their best.

Probably not. “Good Grief”, “Floaty”, “I’ll Stick Around” mis favoritas.

Still a good 'un

Raw and very consistent energy throughout the album. Crazy to think that every part album was written by Dave Grohl, really showcases his ability as a musician. Peaks early with the best tracks right at the front, but still a lot to enjoy. Top tracks: This Is a Call, I'll Stick Around, Big Me

Great album

good album

This is really a Dave Grohl solo album, in the truest sense in that this was done almost entirely solo by Grohl, and really shows how instrumental he was to 90s rock. Not only was he drummer of the most iconic band in grunge, but shows he is a multi-instrumentalist and a class act songwriter. As a true band The Color and the Shape is a better representation (also on the list). 5⭐️

Great album, especially for a debut album. Impressive accomplishment but it's also highly enjoyable.

Even though they have better albums, this album was the start of a band that has defined contemporary rock for over 30 years. It represents a passing of the torch from Nirvana to the Foo fighters, and symbolically from GenX to the Millennials. Crucial album in rock history

I LOOOOVE me some alt rock. One of my favorite genres of all time!!

Exactly my style

Amazing

Fucking amazing. Quite revolutionary

1st Album^^

Love this album, it’s an all-time fav for me. It gets overshadowed by TCATS because that one had bigger hits, but I love the rawness and energy of this one.

Crazy but I like it

Weeniebeenieeeee

Very good

LOVEE this album

Yes, yes , yes 🙌

Good stuff! Loved it.

Facts: - I am an elder Millennial - as a teenager, I was one of those insufferable "I'm not like other girls!" types who deliberately chose mostly male friends - those male friends? they liked Foo Fighters - I trained myself to like Foo Fighters because my friends did - I'm in my 40s now and still enjoy Foo Fighters because that's what I taught myself to do nearly 3 decades ago ANYWAY it's not anything that produces genuine enthusiasm, but the pressure I put on myself to fit in with my chosen friend group is somehow still active and I can happily put this on as background noise and use it to convince my ADHD brain to get shit done. Yeah. Five stars, but quite possibly the weirdest five stars I've given out yet, because it has so little to do with the actual musical talent involved.

Pas mal du tout.

A classic! I grew up with Foo Fighters as my favorite band for many years, I think The Colour and the Shape was my first album I ever owned. This was never my favorite from them — it has some amazing songs (Weenie Beenie, Good Grief, Big Me, This Is a Call all still go so hard) but several that are pretty far down on my list when I want to hear Foo Fighters. Still very enjoyable, very influential to me & to rock music in general. Full marks for you, young, pre-infidelity Dave Grohl!

I love my dad

Everyone knows this one. Becoming a classic at this rate. Kudos to Grohl for not giving up.

Love the FOO fighters. Was surprised this album didn't have most of my fave songs, but still solid listening

Fricken banger of an album. a huge first three tracks. but some belting tracks to support like Exhausted, Weenie Beenie and Good Greif. I miss this Foo Fighters, y'know? Just Dave having fun.

only one track that was meh everything else is to be expected from Foo Fighters, none of the big hits but still a great album

I'm always going to have a soft spot for this album. It came out of nowhere because people had no clue that Dave Grohl was anything more than a drummer. The songs are raw. Even completed for an album, they feel unfinished in the good way. I also will never forget seeing Foo Fighters on their first tour. 5/5

I bought this album just before my wedding when it first came out. Loved it then and love it now.

Fantastic it is and was one of my favorite Food Fighters albums, I loved every minute of it in the early 2000s and still enjoy it today

Great album and introduction to a hard rock group with a profound sound that only got better over time.

Top rock!!!!

i like this! I've heard "big me" before from my ex so it means to me so much lol. I added almost all the songs in my playlist and gonna listen to it again later.

Good old classic. Straightforward Rock. They are legends.

A bit surprising that this made it into the book rather than The Colour And The Shape, as their second album to me is more what the Foo Fighters sound like, and Grohl's characteristic vocals were more confident by that point. In any case this is great too, it's a noisier and rawer offering than their later work with Grohl doing everything himself, but still with a lot of merit. The first four tracks in particular stand up there with the rest of their discography albeit with a slightly less arena-rock sound. Considering he wrote the whole thing in the wake of the suicide of one of his best friends, it's a pretty great achievement really

Ewig nicht gehört. Wie geil chaotisch das war. Vor dem Balkantrip gehört

An exceptional debut album with rifs galore. Gets the blood flowing!

Great album

I haven't heard this in a long time. Must have listened to it a lot back in the day as I still knew every song really well. Had a good old foo fighters phase, as did most people my age. Not sure I really knew them until after "there is nothing left to lose" was released though. Remember my dad having that album, probably the first album I pinched off him to listen to. This was good though, he knows how to write a catchy pop rock song, does old Dave Grohl. I hope colour and the shape is on the list, as it's better than this imo. But still very good The first half is the strongest but still all good. 4.5

LO QUE ME GUSTO ESTE ALBUM POR FAVOR no me lo esperaba!!! Justo estaba getting into los FF y me había escuchado The Color and the Shape pero no me había fascinado.

There’s no polish, no ego trip, no band machine yet — just one guy playing his heart out like he’s got nothing to lose. And that honesty blasts through every riff and drum hit. It’s messy, it’s loud, it’s cathartic, and it’s perfect. This record isn’t just the start of Foo Fighters — it’s proof that music can save you when everything else collapses. I fucking love it.

It’s a 4 star album getting a 5 star rating because it’s the only Foo Fighters on the list and they are better than all the Elvis Costello, Strely Dan and Nick Cave shite this list has served me up. It should be The Colour and the Shape though - that’s a 5.

my fave

It was really nice. At times it felt kinda same-y, but there were some really good songs here

I love the Foo Fighters, this is an easy 5/5.

Rough and ready sound, but the genius is in there.

Fantastic. No notes

Gotta love Foo Fighters!!!

Great debut from Dave

hell yeah

Tragedy turned into rock joy. I wonder if me and Dave would get along. He seems like the kind of person I'd want to hang around with. This album rules.

One of my favorites. Still great all these years later.

Very energetic and loud with slow and winded down moments. 5/5

Phenomenal album. Especially when considering that Dave Grohl wrote, played, and produced the whole thing. It is at times post grunge, 90’s rock, and other times gives hints of the radio friendly songs to come from this band.

Großartig

Enough Foo to really establish the sound signature but not enough Fighters to really drive it in. Even though I planned on giving this a soft 5, this is one of the albums where I sought some context and found that its merit was more impressive than what can be gleaned from the album. 'For All the Cows' is like hearing an old friend for me. A true deep cut, a song which I can only faintly recall having enjoyed so long ago.

This Is a Call is in the running for best first track off a debut album. Big Me was the big hit. People's minds must have been blown when the drummer from Nirvana became the guitarist of Foo Fighters. I was never really got into Foo Fighters but I'm kind of regretting that. This is pretty good. Good album tracks, I really like For All the Cows. Surprisingly good, Exhausted is a great finish.

banger album. banger vibes. needed this this morning 🤘

I remember when this album came out, a lot of us teenagers at the time kind of turned our noses up at this since it wasn't Nirvana. Especially due to the poppier single "Big Me," which was played all the time on heavy rotation with the Menthos commercial. Obviously that was just a product of the time. In retrospect, this album definitely bangs. It's super high energy, hard alternative rock with a lingering grunge edge. It kind of pushes the grunge sound forward in a way consistent with bands like Stone Temple Pilots at the time. I'll definitely go back to this one, and perhaps have to listen to some more Foo Fighters albums to see if more of them are this good. 5/5

This is a great album. It was one that I have not listened to in over 20 years but this listening brought it all back. I still knew all the songs and many of the lyrics. I won’t let 20 years pass again.

AMAZIN

No brainer 5 from me

It's a five.

Repeat listen

I may regret giving this a 5, as I'm really floating between a 4 and 4.5, but I do think this album is still really great in a lot of ways. The "bedroom music" feel along with some of the great distorted and fuzzy tones and songs that felt very fresh at the time - and that I still appreciate. While I don't like any Foo Fighters past their second album, I do think this one and the second album are classics in Alternative Rock.

Solid song writing. Very very tight. Inspired performances of all musicians. Literally nothing about this album not to love. Sets the stage to an incredible body of work.

the birth of a whole wave of modern alternative, made especially impressive by the fact that Grohl played all of the instruments on this album. Hard to believe it’s already 30 yrs. old. first album on the list where i’ve already heard all the songs

You can definitely tell that the front man was in Nirvana for years, and that that certain front man's best friend deadened himself recently

I’ve loved Foo Fighters for many years. This first album started me off.

I don't always appreciate the foo fighters. Some of their music I like and some of it seems repetitive and not always my kind of music.

Bangers

I haven't heard that album for a long time. It's pretty timeless. It rocks. 100%. 5 out of 5.

Full of rock bangers. Not bad for Grohl's first album after Nirvana.

Fuck i love this album. Eye opening, makes me feel like im 13. Baby baby baby. 5/5

One of those albums where I basically know every song already. It just never feels small. There’s such a punch to it. Like someone finally let the sun shine through the grunge clouds, it was perfect post Nirvana music. Just a rad album. No notes. Dave Rocks. Spins: a lot Playlist Additions: - This Is a Call - I'll Stick Around - Big Me - Alone + Easy Target - Good Grief - Floaty - For All The Cows

Love this album! Everlong is truly amazing.

Didn't know this was a solo project after Kurt Cobain died I knew it sounded close but never put them together.

best foo record imo 5 stars has a lot of nirvana leftovers not a bad thing

this album is so nostalgic to me for no reason

My day is upon us. I can’t believe this is the album they picked over Colour and The Shape, arguably a top 100 album all time. This album still rules and is the best example of sad dude alone in his garage making an album by himself. I am a big nirvana fan but this album really lays the groundwork to fix everything wrong with Nirvana while still having the same energy and stronger songwriting (further expanded on in colour and the shape!!!) This is a 10/10 (colour is a 15/10) and then the third album is like an 8 and then nose dive into oblivion except wasting light was really good. This album has sick rock, radio friendly jams, screamo elements, hardcore songs, and a couple shoegaze esque selections, I’ve got no complaints on anything here except his lyrics are a little weak at times (i heard he fixes this on the colour and the shape!!!) Great album, go listen to colour and the shape

The kind of album most bands will never even come close to making in their entire career, and this was just the first one Dave released. Still grunge but with a Foo flair.

One of The Best debuts of all times

Amazing. I still love The Colour And The Shape and especially There Is Nothing Left To Lose much more, but there're lots of awesome songs on this debut, Alone + Easy Target is just soooo damn great

you can definitely tell dave grohl is the frontman because there are HEAVY nirvana influences (see “i’ll stick around”). i also really liked “alone + easy target”! the instrumentation was really well done and the chorus is super catchy (but not in an annoying earworm way). “floaty” was another standout and was the perfect rock ballad! “weenie beenie” started getting into screamer rock (which i lowkey mess with). i am also gonna glaze the electric solo in “oh, george”. HUGE fan of the electric guitar. so it’s no surprise that i loved “x-static”. cannot believe i haven’t tried foo fighters before this. 5/5.

Rockin

Love em. All their albums. It’s just good honest harmless 90’s rock. Don’t ever change Dave Grohl.

Fantastic debut album. I’m not a Foo Fighters fan, but in this debut Dave shows off his grunge / punk roots, by writing all the songs, playing all the instruments, and singing. This is FF before they became a dad rock band. I love every song.

love love love this record. ❤️ dave playing all the instruments.

I was very skeptical at the time when the drummer from nirvana was releasing an album. But I loved its rawness and sound and I was at Reading festival to see them in one of their first gigs. Colour and the shape is the best album foos made but, to me, this is second

Never listened to this all the way through before — really interesting cultural relic of the transition from grunge to here in 1994/95.

It is a perfect rock/pop album that doesn’t miss. Really enjoyable.

My favorite of the Foo Fighter albums, still really had that 90s sound that I've always been very partial to. Much less there sound but you can still hear where they would later reach. Next album was more theirs but more polished and I really like the rougher edges here.

All timer, second favorite foo album

Aw I'm so torn between 4 and 5, as I'd give Colour Shape a solid 5, and this isn't quite the same level to me? But then it's one human pouring lots into a short record and I'm a sucker for that sort of activity. Fiiiiiiine 5* life is too short to think too much on this! :)

I think I thought this album was slow and chill because of Big Me. Not at all.

It's a one-man band record that checks all the boxes, and it's honestly quite original and not intensely derivative like other records on the list. Grohl never intended for it to continue his career; he made it to cope with the loss of a close friend and bandmate. Writing and recording this record is what kept Grohl in the music industry, and the album is honestly quite the achievement, and it is essential.

One of the best albums by the foo fighters even better when you discover that grohl did everything on this album

Genre that defined my childhood but I didn't really get into Foo Fighters until after High School (2005)

5.0 - Awesome

As a Nirvana, Foo Fighters and big Dave Grohl fan I probably have a biased opinion, I mean it was a 5 before I even bothered to think about it. I don't usually write more than 2 or 3 lines for a review, but... This is an epic debut album, considered to have started post-grunge. Not only did Dave write all the tracks, play all the instruments and (along with the help of Barrett Jones) produce the album, but he did so in just 6 days, most of the songs being recorded in around 45 minutes. To do this on the back of a heavy and tragic loss is nothing less than empowering and incredible. The success from an album born from insecurity, depression and bereavement. How rock n roll! Not surprisingly, the drums are truly magnificent. Dave's musicianship really shines throughout. It really opened everything up for Dave and Foo Fighters. I'd give it more than 5 if I could, but hey ho.

Great side project

Awesome. Know it well

I didn't know how much I'd like them. This first album was slightly more mellow which of course I'm a fan of.

I owned this album and listened to it a TON when it came out. Still love it but don't reach for it as often today as I did when I was an angsty teenager.

Lots of great songs, I'm biased though.

Oh man, I love this album. It's so raw, and you can just feel the emotion in Dave Grohl's play and lyrics. You get the sense that he's just trying to figure out how to pick up the pieces after Nirvana. Maybe not as refined as later albums, this was a great bridge into The Color and the Shape. I think the music is actually more creative than a lot of Foo Fighter's later stuff. Everything after the first two albums always felt kind of flat and like crack jack rock pumped out for sales. But this album is the real thing. (Side note: I'm a huge sucker for debut and sophomore albums) It also came out when I was just getting into my own music, so it has a special spot for me there. I spent a lot of my teen years trying to figure out my place in life, which hardly makes me unique, but this was one of those albums that made me understand that maybe everyone else is just trying to figure out what to do next too.

Sick album

Months after Kurt’s death Grohl decided it was time to leave the house and record some music. That’s how the Foo Fighters were born. Grohl recording an entire album alone and deciding it was too good to not release. He truly is one of the greatest music ever. His ability to create dynamics, melodies are elite. 9.1/10

Dave Grohl made this in a cave with a box of scraps

ahhhh 1995 :) This album had a ton of bangers didn't it. 5 stars maily for nostalgic reasons.

Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes (5)

Phenomenal album. I was fortunate to see them in 2023!

🤘🏼

There is something so special about this album compared to the rest of the Foo's discography. Once Dave got an actual band with him I think it lost a lot of the charm. There are still a lot of great songs and albums (hell musically I think that The Color and the Shape is probably their "best" and I'm surprised that isn't on this list) but this project is different and special. It comes down to me to the context surrounding it. Knowing that this is all just one guy doing everything as a way to cope with the suicide of a close friend and band mate, probably thinking that the biggest and best thing he probably would ever be apart of was over, adds an extra layer here. 10/10. Foo's were very important to me back in high school and while I overlooked this one at the time as "the one before the rest of the band got there" looking back at it; it just might be there best.

OG fucking foo fighters!

Finally some rock & roll!!! Dave Grohl's big debut. Wildly impressive he did it all himself and love how raw it is. Also found the lyrics to hit a little deeper with the full album listen. Every song is kind of a banger but loved Big Me, This is a Call and X-Static. Could listen all day. Hope to see more of the Foo Fighters on the list. No notes beyond the fact that it's a shame that Dave Grohl cheated on his wife :(

Brought back a lot of memories, I was there in the tent at reading to see the foo fighters in one of their very first concerts. I really enjoyed listening to this, when it first came out I judged it too much against Nirvana. Time has been very kind to this album easily 5*

Good Grief

This is a completely biased opinion, but this album is a seminal part of my taste in music and the debut album of one of my favorite bands of all time. With that said, I do think it is a solid 90s alternative rock album. I'm pretty sure that, in an hypothetical world in which I do not love the Foo Fighters already, I'd rate it as a four star album.

Exhausted = <333333

Solid gold 5. Great debut. The kind of crossover between Nirvana and what the Foos would become. Holds a very special place.

great album, i like almost all of the songs. simple lyrics, yet has so good instrumental and easy listening

I love the Foo Fighters! So pleasantly surprised to see this.

Such a great album. Love it.

I forgot how awesome this album was. IT was a great blast of the past.

Just don’t love the Foo Fighters but glad I finally listened to one of their albums which verified my opinion

In the immortal words of Christopher Walken: foo FIghters! I don't care if Dave Grohl has a million extramarital children, he is the absolute bees knees musically.

The first and still my favourite Foo Fighters album

bello 🍌

Emotions still running high from the loss of his friend, he couldn't run away from the life he led no matter how much he tried. So Dave Grohl returned under the name of "Foo Fighters", a one man band, and made a masterpiece of an album often considered to be the last breath of the dying but well lived genre of grunge.

This is probably the most flawed album that I will nonetheless give a 5 to. I just love it too much.

Foo is great post-grunge hard rock. Love it.

Damn. I really thought I would hate this. I kept finding myself turning the volume in my car louder and louder. Raw and not super polished but I loved that about it.

It's great

fingernails are good

Love this album and every album that followed.

Good, solid debut album. Good songs. Love this album.

I did not know that Dave Grohl made this album on his own. The band came later. Anyway, it is superb (post-) grunge: dynamic, intense and melodic.

Right from the first note of This Is A Call, Dave Grohl is making a statement that it's time to move on from the sadness of Kurt Cobain's death - time to rock! I'm still amazed that Grohl essentally did all of the music and vocals on this album. Liked Songs Added: This Is A Call I'll Stick Around Big Me Alone + Easy Target Floaty Exhausted

Really loved this. Sounds like a more thoughtful, more melodic Nirvana album. Enjoyed it more than later Foo Fighters.

Solid rock album, but I like their later stuff more

This is a classic for me. I bought it the day it was released and have listened to it off and on for the past 30 years. It will always trigger a sense memory of a certain time of my life, I was listening to it so much. Love it.

Finally a good band. It’s been a long list of bands I’ve never heard of. And then the Foo Fighters. They are legitimately one of my top ten bands. I love every thing they do. And I think this album shows why. For a debut album this really showcases a wide variety of rock styles. There are some absolute bangers here. 5

I've always heard of foo fighters but never listened, really enjoyed it

Love their sound

wowww foo fighters

i love it

never heard this before; in fact the only record by them i heard besides the obvious one was the one that came after that UPD: i HAVE in fact heard this before and i didn't really like it *** super interesting how this record feels much more like it's picking up where Nirvana's In Utero left off as opposed to Foo Fighters next record where there's much more assorted influences in the music and the direction & production are pretty different kind of feels like New Order's Movement in that regard oh but it also makes total sense that it was Grohl who played nearly all parts on this; it's not as much Nirvana letting go of Nirvana: the album but Dave Grohl himself i can definitely imagine I'll Stick Around and Alone + Easy Target with Kurt's vocals even still, Good Grief almost sounds like a Naked Raygun song, doesn't it? it's super good Floaty lowkey sounds like something Title Fight would make wtf oh hey Weenie Beenie could be on a Queens of the Stone Age album; aren't they friends with Josh Homme? very nice record that rubs me the right way even compared to Nirvana and later Foo Fighters with an interesting story behind it

Nice to know that he did everything for this album

I love that. I will listen again.

Life changing.

Very good

I’m at a 4.5 that I’ll just barely bump up to a 5 just because I liked this a lot. It’s very hard to not think about Nirvana (and more specifically Kurt Cobain) when listening to this, but it’s just because they’re so tightly linked. Obviously, Dave Grohl has stepped far beyond the overwhelming lingering impact that Kurt left behind to become a star in his own right, but since this album comprises so much of material Dave wrote while he was still in Nirvana, it’s just hard to avoid making the comparison. It is, however, very easy to listen to this and realize that Dave Grohl is absolutely not Kurt Cobain – even though a number of songs on here feel like they’re directly linked to Nirvana (X-Static absolutely has to be a Nevermind tribute in its vocal style and instrumentation, come on), there’s a pretty strong number that show Dave’s own musical styles well, whether it’s the acoustically laden cheesy “Big Me.” the heavy metal of “Weenie Beenie,” or the hard punk of “Wattershed,” it’s a really good showcase of just how varied the Foo Fighters would come to be once Dave got an actual full band together. It’s seriously impressive to me that this is all Dave Grohl – obviously, with the benefit of an entire world-class discography later, we know he had this in him all along, but for 1995, it’s a really ballsy shot to take. “The drummer from Nirvana made an album? After Kurt died? What a cash grab, am I right?” It could’ve totally flopped if people didn’t give the music a genuine chance, and I’m so very glad they did – this is a pretty good album. It’s got a few flaws – I think the lyrics aren’t as tight as they could be (and as Dave would later prove, would be), and some of the instrumental/production choices are a little off putting and screechy at times, but considering how much of this was written long before it was recorded, and that Dave Grohl did it all by himself, I can look over those as nitpicks. It’s just a damn good listen, and a really strong debut – 4.5 barely bumped up to a 5, but very, very good regardless.

Completely biased review time! Foo Fighters is my favorite band. I love this album, and it has some serious bangers on it. While it's not my favorite FF album (The Colour and The Shape), it's still great! 9.5/10 Would I listen again? Of course!

Great album.

Man, turns out that Dave Grohl guy? Pretty good. Who knew? 😂

i love you dave grohl oh my god. if you want some good grunge, look no further than foo fighter's debut album. grunge rock that isn't overly pretentious, depressing for the sake of being depressing, and/or grimy audio sludge. if kurt was still alive, i truly think he would weep tears of joy listening to this album. also this guy recorded this whole thing in a WEEK. that's nuts.

Foo Fighters’ debut album is raw, relentless, and brimming with the kind of energy only a fresh start can bring. Recorded almost entirely by Dave Grohl himself in the aftermath of Nirvana, it’s a project that feels both cathartic and full of purpose. There’s a looseness to it — unpolished but deeply focused — that gives it a unique charm in the band’s discography. Tracks like “This Is a Call,” “Big Me,” and “Alone + Easy Target” showcase Grohl’s knack for melody buried under layers of distortion, but “I’ll Stick Around” is the standout — aggressive, hooky, and pulsing with just enough venom to feel personal. It’s the sound of someone reclaiming their voice and turning the volume way up. As far as debut albums go, this one doesn't just promise a new chapter — it slams the door on the past and kicks open a new one with confidence. Favorite song: "Big Me"

Probably their best one

Man, I do love this album, and I do love this man. It’s pretty amazing how this all came about; from the ashes of a destroyed kingdom, wrecked and bumming around the UK in depressed isolation. Fuck that, pull yourself out! Make some cassettes, play every instrument on every song, hand out and see who listens. Everyone. Uh Dave, this fucking rocks, go get a band! It’s a unique story. Had Kurt missed his head, the Foos might never have been. And as much as I revere Nevermind, I like Dave and the FF’s far more than I miss Nirvana. Anyway, the album; top to bottom, kicks ass. Sets the tone for this man’s ever evolving incredible journey.

Great songs

Not many rock albums have a better 4-punch opening than this one, and there are no really bad tracks here. Weenie Beenie, albeit having a solid riff is the only mid track. The production and lack of variety in sound are a minus, but 9/10 is still a 5-star rating

Foo Fighters' self-titled debut album is a smashing entry into the rock scene, showcasing Dave Grohl's impressive talents as a multi-instrumentalist. Grohl plays all the instruments on the record, signaling a decisive move away from his grunge roots with Nirvana. This album cements his new direction, embracing a more melodic and energetic rock sound. The raw energy and catchy hooks remain compelling, proving that the album still sounds great today. Standout tracks like This Is a Call and Big Me highlight Grohl's ability to blend powerful riffs with memorable melodies. Despite being a solo effort, the album feels cohesive and reflects Grohl's clear artistic vision. The mix of hard-hitting rock anthems and introspective moments adds depth and variety. Foo Fighters is not just a solid debut but a foundational record that set the stage for the band's future success. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 7 STAND OUT TRACK - Big Me

A classic, one of my favorite bands and a great stepping stone between grunge and alternative rock. Big Me sucks.

Always enjoyed this album

Amazing energy

That is an awesome self entitled

Excellent album

Rating: 5/5

Luke’s gonna hate me for this but yeah. It’s a 5. it’s a mid to strong 9. some may not enjoy it as much as I do but you can just watch Dave Grohl grow on this record. Genre defining, with no skips, nevermind reinventing the term one man band. even the deep cuts smack. I know I will be the only one this high but i think that not too many records have this level of influence, and it’s an outstanding opening statement for the modern legends the foo are. 5/5

It's a good album.

So so good. Even the songs I didn't recognize were excellent. So perfectly heavy, loud, melodic, pleasant. Five stars easily.

Very pleasantly surprised to see this on the list, given the greater commercial success of the later FF albums. Got to into this album quite late, but my god what a debut. Love an album where one person plays/sings everything. Something I could only dream of. This album is a perfect follow on from Nirvana. Grunge elements retained in bit, but with a blend of garage rock/whatever Dave felt like at the time. Though almost all songs are not as polished as later FF releases (e.g. everlong), their rawness adds to the charm. Good Grief remains one of my FF songs despite it's relative simplicity, whereas Exhausted is one of the best album closers - after a pretty heavy fast/slow album you've got a droney, black-metal esque riff with some of Dave's most ethereal vocals. 4.5*, rounding up as it's just ended on an absolute banger

Definitely not their best and they deserve more

Maybe there's some nostalgia at work here, but this is just a perfect record to me. I haven't heard most of these songs since the mid 90s. But I'll definitely listen a lot more. The pacing keeps me interested. The guitar tone goes from crunchy to twangy to fit the mood. The vocals and lyrics are intense but whimsical. I haven't been very interested in most of the Foo Fighters later work. But this album just feels like a cultural epoch.

just love it. i'll stick around, Alone + Easy Target, exhausted are all just top tier songs

Haven't listened to anywhere near enough Foo Fighters songs. The ones I do know are awesome, just never got round to checking out more. Didn't know anything on this album, and it sounds very different to the classics I know. Loved the album though. Had no idea Foo Fighters started off as just Dave Grohl. Just another reason why he's one of coolest guys around. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Love the Foo.

Its Foo Fighters so it was spectacular

This is a Call: 10/10 I'll Stick Around: 10/10 Big Me: 10/10 Alone + Easy Target : 11/10 Good Grief: 9/10 Floaty: 10/10 underrated af Weenie Beenie: 9/10 Oh, George: 10/10 underrated af For All the Cows: 9/10 X-static: 10/10 Wattershed: 8/10 Exhausted: 9/10 Top Three: (rough one) Alone + Easy Target Floaty X-static Album Score: 10/10 One of my favorite albums from one of my favorite bands

This album is pretty, this album is good

Probably won’t be a 5 for most but it’s a 5 for me. No skips. Each song has at least one killer memorable moment. And I like to picture that some of these songs would have been on the next Nirvana record. It’s a 5 from me.

I love it

classic 90's alternative. Dave Grohl is one of the most talented musicians.

Great first album by a great band.

I really love the Foo Fighters. Maybe because I’ve seen them live multiple times and just love their casual energy. They seem like they are talented without ego (whether that is true is unknown).

Foo Fighters are awesome

Insane debut from an already established name at the time, soon to become even bigger as one of rock's most well-known groups. Dave Grohl hit the ground running with 1,000 gallons of momentum and never looked back. Foo Fighters have a way of working with grief, turning it into music that's raw, energetic, emotional, cathartic, and just a treat to listen to. Not to mention, these songs sound amazing live - I'll never forget hearing the intro to I'll Stick Around as the band walked out onstage, and then proceeding to have two of the most enjoyable hours I've ever had at a concert. I do think The Colour & The Shape, There is Nothing Left to Lose, or even Wasting Light would be better representations for this list (mainly because this record didn't even have the rest of the band in it), but I'm biased so.... Standouts are This is a Call, I'll Stick Around, Big Me, Floaty, and For All the Cows.

One of my favorite bands and such a great debut!!!

5 stars and haven't even listened to it yet. But I will because I absolutely love the Foo Fighters.

Teenage me loved this album. I remember the TV commercials promoting it, which featured just a steady shot of the album cover while the chorus for "This Is A Call" blasted though the speakers. My anticipation for it's release following the death of Kurt Cobain was rabid. Almost 30 years later, I have such a deeper appreciation for what Dave Grohl created. To single handedly produce this record - writing every track, stepping up as surprisingly incredible front man, and playing each instrument along the way - is inspiring. The death of Cobain had an entire generation of music fans in mourning. Grohl's willingness to step into the biggest shoes imaginable is fucking bold. It's even more astonishing with the benefit of hindsight. Grohl was the drummer behind one of the true pioneers of rock. And he was fucking awesome. The drum intro to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" might be the most iconic ever (in my dipshit opinion). But it's crazy to think that such a diverse musical talent was hidden behind that drum kit. Cobain and Grohl will go down as one of the greatest 1-2 punches to ever share a stage. Nirvana fans just didn't fully appreciate it at the time. How could we? This album should be cherished. 👌

This caught me off-guard. A quick and angry recoil to Cobain's suicide, and every bit as good as Nirvana's output. But there's something more here: a tender take on grunge, honesty replacing irony with a mid-Western drawl, but still as loud and as raw as hell. Every song just hits so hard and sounds so good, even if the production isn't great, but that's part of the charm. I never realised what a place this held in my heart though. It's just so perfect and ugly-beautiful and unique as an album. Grohl wore his heart on his sleeve and it paid off massively for him.

I don't even need to listen to this album to rate it. This is one of those albums that I can listen to over and over and over. Dave Grohl is one of the greatest rock song writers of all time. The fact that he could go from Nirvana's drummer to leading one of the best rock bands of all time is a testament to his talent. Also the fact that he wrote and recorded this album solo just multiplies how talented he is. I'd give this 6* if I could.

this is like a happy place. could i write poetry to this? y

Solid album. I enjoyed it a lot more than I remembered. Grohl is an ambassador for rock and roll. 4 stars for the album and an extra star for being friends with Lemmy.

One of my favs from the 90s. I personally think this is some of the best material Grohl has put out. Hot take: Better than Nirvana. Catchy, well-crafted hooks. Songwriting is straightforward, but classic in it's structure. This is one of the seminal albums that heralded the change from grunge to alternative as the dominant genre in rock.

One of my favs. Still gets better with every listen.

I've heard some songs before, but not all the way through. It was a very refreshing look into what the nineties had to offer in the grunge scene. Probably best album in my opinion from them.

I mean this is the fountain it all stems from. The holy grail of Foo magic. The Foo Fighters have always been there along with me... So yeah, in fact "Hell Yeah!" of course this is an essential album!

I freaking love foo fighters

Perfect

A great debut that no one expected.

This is my wife's favorite band so she told me I had to give it 5 stars! Lol...

This is why I fell in love with The Foo Fighters!

I remember when this album came out and I was skeptical that the drummer from nirvana would have made anything good, but I listened to it a few weeks later and was surprised that it wasn't only good, it was great. Fast forward to today and now I can say that I love dave grohl. 5/5

A great departure from Nirvana with more harmony-rich and slow rock with keeping in touch with the grunge spirit. One of my favorite bands and a great album. Feels like an attic fire.

Great album!

Very nice

Absolute banger of an album

BANGERS MADE BY THE YOUTH OF YESTERDAY

Heartfelt and vulnerable.

Never appreciated how similar in style some of these songs are to Nirvana. Also never appreciated how good this album is.

Dave Grohl is awesome!

Saw them at Tibetan Freedom concert in 1996 when this album came out. It his album really impacted me in terms of the sound of the production and the songwriting - super quirky while sometimes pretty heavy. Punk influences, and big nirvana-esque choruses. Love this record. 2 spins today. This album is better than I remember. I think it’s near perfect.

So 5 out of 5, it's the fucking foo fighters. The definition of a rock band, just a pic of them in the old Oxford. Favorite track was weenie beenie

i loved this album and foo fighters are one of my favorite bands! i’m seeing them in concert in july :) i don’t think i had listened to the album all the way through but there wasn’t a single song i didn’t like. i already knew most of the songs but wow.

I'm surprised how polarizing this record and the Foo's are here. Though I suppose people don't remember rock when this thing came out. This record was one of few rock records at the time that wasn't terminally depressing. There is a sadness here. But Dave is carrying on. And this record felt fresh. Dave and Kurt were never going to be John and Paul. This was needed to let Dave shine. And nirvana would not have continued being the band it was had Kurt lived. This is born out of a mess of emotions and a crazy time in music. It's a classic.

Even without consideration for how and when Dave Grohl recorded this album, it stands up as a solid post-grunge album. However, it means so much more. To think he played every instrument and threw it together in its rawest form of garage recording, distributed anonymously via his friends on cassette tape makes it astonishing. It doesn’t stand up alongside some of the Foos following albums, but what it lacks in terms of production, big guitar layers and that obvious chemistry making a record as a group brought, it more than makes up for with raw emotion. It has all the soft soft loud ingredients, and cute melodies that define him. Thank God he found the strength to carry on as a musician and get this album out there. My world would be a much worse place without Mr Grohls music. Five. Stars. All. Day. Long.

Blast from the past - Seattle grunge 😁 Took me back to my 20s. Never got into the Foo Fighters, but enjoyed this one!

Absolute masterpiece of an album

I won't hear a word against the undisputed genius that is Dave Grohl.

Seminal post grunge album. Amazing to think Dave Grohl did it himself in six days

Dave Grohl becomes more than just the drummer for Nirvana with this solo album that plants the seed to grow into one of the most successful rock bands of our time. This still might be my favorite Foo album despite the success of the sophomore album. 90s grunge forever!

Awesome!

A little too much for listening at work in the office....

Probably the best Foo Fighters album IMO

Life after Nirvana wasn't that bad. Still a great album to revisit.

#81. Somehow this dude managed to capture lightning in a bottle twice and be in two of the most popular rock bands of all time. This is definitely-probably the best Food Finder album as well. 5/5: fingernails are good

Great record for a one man band.

I think this might be the most vulnerable and raw Dave Grohl has ever let himself be publicly. I love the Foos, but this album is different than the rest of their catalogue. Dave had a specific perspective and moment in time that informed all of the songwriting and instrumentation. You can’t think about or digest this album properly without the context of Kurt’s suicide and Nirvana’s end. This is Dave making a choice to regroup and carry on. This is about reflection, rebirth, regeneration, and survival. This is Dave saying he’s not done being in a band, and he’s not going to hide himself away behind the drums anymore. He’s coming into his own and he’s got a lot to offer creatively. Knowing the Foos as deeply as I do, I feel that this is really the only time we listeners get to peep behind the curtain of Dave’s generally goofy and optimistic persona, to glimpse the unmoored young man dealing with devastating loss and uncertainty about his future. He’s on the precipice of transformative change and his art reflects that. It resonates. I think those factors allow me to score this higher than I would, given that there are better Foo Fighters albums that I as a fan gravitate to. But I can’t help marvelling at the way Dave worked through the shit and decidedly carved a new legacy for his name. This album helped him shed his old life and step into his new one. And it’s a solid listen all the way through.

One of my all time favourites and 2nd best Foo Fighters album after Colour & Shape

what can i say, dave grohl is dave grohl. there's a reason he is a legend these days. this album is a lot more rough around the edges than other foo fighters stuff i've heard, and i really like that about it. of course, i know the backstory of this one and the raw edge it has makes total sense. just a really great album.

Fantastic album. Miles better than their new stuff!

Awesome album. Forgot how great it was, and how much the band then evolved over the years.

Love foo fighters

This Is a Call - it's kinda funny cause like. this doesn't sound like Foo Fighters to me but it does. (4/5 i don't think i know Foo Fighters as well as i thought) I'll Stick Around - this is very close to what i grew up on so i really like this. it goes hard but still kinda sounds like the Dad Rock i know. (5/5 slap the fuck outta those drums) Big Me - this is closer to what i would have associated with early Foo Fighters. (3/5 i can see where Red Vox gets the inspiration) Alone + Easy Target - this sounds like the Foo Fighters i associate with more recent stuff. (5/5 i like it) Good Grief - damn i forgot how much i enjoy the hard rock that came out of the 90s. very loud brass and "recorded in a garage" vibe. (4/5 that classic slappy repetitive drum) Floaty - perfect title. (5/5 just for title) Weenie Beenie - another perfect title?? (5/5 basically handing these out) Oh, George - i don't know what it is about a Foo Fighters' guitar solo but it fucks. (4/5 almost) For All the Cows - the bass. that was a good build up to that drop of a chorus. (5/5) X-Static - good slow song to kind of palette cleanse before the last two songs. (4/5 i like it) Wattershed - going immediately headfirst into it huh. (4/5 okay i get it going pretty hard) Exhausted - a good outro pretty chill so far. the noise better not just be this for 2 minutes. oh thank god. the song has become a secret (4/5 shh) this album was really good. i really liked most of the songs but i wasn't completely blown away. i will say with the current discography of Foo Fighters, this is a good entry point of getting into their stuff. getting raised listening to this kind of stuff, i'd honestly get back into Foo Fighters. getting a 5/5 for the titles.

Overall, this was a great album. If you ever feel like listening to basic rock n' roll, Foo Fighters is the band for you. "X-Static" is a song on the album that I feel is grunge influenced. "Wattershed" is another song that I feel is more punk influenced. There are a lot of group out there that have evolved and changed their styles over the years (sometimes for the worse). Foo Fighters I think still sound the same, and sometimes, that is okay <3

While I think "The Colour and the Shape" was the Foo Fighters' "pinnacle," I find their self titled to be the most interesting record they put out. While their later releases were immaculately produced and veered more towards straightforward alternative rock, this album retained some edge. It had ideas that Dave Grohl had been playing around with for a while, so they had a chance to breathe and evolve into something fresh that wasn't around in 1995.

Still great

For me, it’s poppy and punk at the same time. This is the formula that the Foo Fighters have used for years now, but it’s all Dave Grohl, trying to figure out what he’s going to do now that Kurt Cobain is dead. Is it top of the Foo Fighters pyramid, IMO no. But it is fun and great. So 5 stars for me.

My favourite as a teen.

This is an album I've listened to several dozen times. Automatic 5 stars from me.
