Album Summary

...And Justice for All is the fourth studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica, released on September 7, 1988 by Elektra Records. It was the first Metallica album to feature bassist Jason Newsted, following the death of their previous bassist Cliff Burton in 1986. Metallica recorded the album with producer Flemming Rasmussen over four months in early 1988 at One on One Recording Studios in Los Angeles. It features aggressive complexity, fast tempos, and few verse-chorus structures. It contains lyrical themes of political and legal injustices, such as governmental corruption, censorship, and war. The cover, designed by Roger Gorman, and illustration by Stephen Gorman was based on a concept by Metallica guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, depicts Lady Justice bound in ropes, being pulled by them to the point of breaking, with dollar bills piled upon her scales. The album title is derived from the last four words of the American Pledge of Allegiance. Three of its songs were released as singles: "Harvester of Sorrow", "Eye of the Beholder", and "One"; the title track was released as a promotional single. ...And Justice for All was acclaimed by music critics for its depth and complexity, although its dry mix and nearly inaudible bass guitar was criticized. It was included in The Village Voice's annual Pazz & Jop critics' poll of the year's best albums, and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1989, controversially losing out to Jethro Tull in the ill-fated Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental category. The single "One" backed the band's debut music video, and earned Metallica their first Grammy Award in 1990 (and the first ever in the Best Metal Performance category). It was successful in the United States, peaking at number six on the Billboard 200, and was certified 8× platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 2003 for shipping eight million copies in the U.S. The album was reissued on November 2, 2018, in vinyl, CD, and cassette formats, as well as receiving a deluxe box set treatment with bonus tracks and unreleased video footage. The reissue reached number 37 and 42 on Billboard's Top Album Sales and Top Rock Albums charts, respectively.

I liked eye of the beholder (...and justice for all was so long i was so bored I could die lmao) okay...unpopular opinion: most songs sounded the same to me

Like it 3/5

Listening to this album brought me back to some good memories. I spent an entire summer break listening to this album on repeat. This one album. Over and over again. It was such a great escape from the misery of working for my uncles on an asphalt crew in Utah. I loved listening again.

As Metal goes, this was quite tolerable. Even enjoyable mostly. It does have a harder edge than I typically prefer in my rock music, but I found myself really engaging with some of the guitar work in a few of those longer songs. The second half of the album seemed like the better half to me which was surprising as a lot of artists front load their albums with the best stuff.

Might have been a 5 star with bass mixed in. All in all - great album

Classic.

What an album! It's hard and aggressive. The band is tight. I think it is shaded by Master of Puppets, but I do love this.

Our house used to sound like this when our kids lived at home.

Not my usual jam but I actually liked this

One of easiest 5 star ratings yet. This album is perfection.

I appreciate Metallica have a cult status and a very devoted fan base. I never got it and to me it's mainly just noise. My abiding memory of Metallica is walking away from the stage as they came on at a Reading festival and hundred of devotees running past me towards the noise.... I guess it must be me that's wrong lol.... I'm happy to keep walking away.

Good thrash record I think I like ride the lightening more and just so rarely reach for this type of thing but hard to argue with the consistency and musicianship on this first stretch of early Metallica records

Still prefer the self-titled album

The last document of the hungry, unwashed version of Metallica — after this they would hit paydirt with the self-titled black album and morph into reliable doofuses — is a pretty good listen, despite its flaws: flat production and the suppression of new bassist Jason Newsted’s low end. There are some nice classical-inspired guitar segments, the songs play like long, complex prog suites while (mostly) avoiding that genre’s excesses, and James Hetfield delivers some of his least-affected vocal performances. I got through it without once rolling my eyes, which is not something I can often say about Metallica. Reciting the late Cliff Burton’s poem on “To Live is to Die” was a surprising and moving choice. Postscript: The song “One” inspired high-school me to read the novel “Johnny Got His Gun,” which was as depressing as you’d expect.

Metallica gonna keep getting 3s until they make something better than tolerable

This is still firmly in the era of good Metallica vs the overproduced nonsense they’d put out later. The riffs are hard as hell and they make up for Lars’s total incompetence with half of his kit. One thing that happens on this album more than other Metallica albums is the complicated guitar intros that have barely anything to do with the rest of the song. I want to tell young James to do a nice classical album with Kirk under different names. It’s not bad and they’ve always done it but it’s particularly frequent on this album. As for the rest, it’s great. There are barely any hooks or choruses here so you just get riff after riff and solo after solo. I guess that’s off putting to many people but I like it. “One” is a classic but nearly everything on here has a ton of energy and speed. Out of the others I liked “Blackened” and “The Shortest Straw” the most.

Good album, just not familiar with any songs other than “One”

Highlights: One

I like the guitars and the general feel of the album. The rest is just not their best work. I would not put it on this list. But "One" is obviously a legendary song.

13 Oct 2026 · 2/10 Not for me, I just don't like it and I just don't get it. Maybe I'm not ready for it yet.

Surely a 5* for heavy metal fans

Banger. Favorite Metallica album. One of my favorite metal albums. Inspired me to explore more extremes of the genre.

its getting a bit old at this point

Been waiting for some Metallica. Shows how good they are that this isn’t my favourite of theirs and it’s still a clear 5. Masterpiece.

Where's my bass????

I have never really given Metallica a chance. Metal, with two notable exceptions in Motorhead and Iron Maiden, is not a genre I've ever really gotten. And after this I kind of get the appeal, but I cannot say I enjoy it any more in broad strokes Unlike some metal which I have a harder time getting on board with, I can understand what Metallica are saying, just as I can for Bruce or Lemmy. Sadly, nothing is so poetic, or so emotive. It just feels a bit amateur in comparison to Maiden, while being more selfserious than Motorhead. Lyrically, not really competing. What makes it quite egregious is that they have a lot of great buzzwords in there that make it feel like they are making points, but it kind of just has the effect of flicking through headlines without clicking on the articles, while maybe occasionally glancing at some comments made by other people who never actually read the news before blurting their opinion. I love political music. I even love some hyped up and less meaningful political music. But tonally the album doesn't really sell me on righteous fury, or optimism. It just chugs along. So then I don't really musically hear how Hetfield and Ulrich's statements about the environment, greed, corruption, censorship etc. are meant to make me feel. This is where a good punk or folk track can shine. Or even, to return to them, Iron Maiden. Where the Wind Blows makes me tearful for the impact of a potential nuclear war on its bystanders. Run to the Hills makes me feel angry and hyped up about European Colonialism in the Americas. And I don't even think they were fully intending it! They just knew those sounds amplified the story and lyrics. Musically, it is quite impressive in the guitars. The blasting drum beat is fine, but wears out its welcome. Where I think it falls apart though is in the mixing. It is what everyone says about this album based on some light reading, but they are 100% right to raise it. Without a noticable bass groove the songs sound light and tinny. And then they go on too long! The title track was where it really hit me. Its almost 10 minutes long, but it is the same three riffs over and over, with little progression or change, and just blasting the same message that "justice is raped" and "it's terrible" at me for the full run time. I would much rather be listening to Bad Religion for amateur sounding but technically proficient hard rockers about politics. And I'd trust Greg Graffin to write more insightful lyrics while at it, and keep the run time under 5 minutes One saving grace on the album. One. It is the only one which really stands out as a track I would like to hear again, with a progression, movements, and an interesting inspiration. I don't think it is a perfect song. I still think its quite lyrically on the nose, without being particularly affective, but it is decent. It's a wee bit better than the rest of the album. It's something...

Ultimately not really my favorite, but you can’t deny the skill. I think Metallica has stronger albums, but this album rocked plenty hard

Part of the Metallica Holy Trinity of albums. This, ride, and puppets were staples in my early music upbringing

Hetfield might not have heard the frayed ends of sanity calling to him if the thrash metal demigods broke free of their trademark formula more often than not. ‘One’ is a standout track on this album, their fourth LP, which foreshadows a little of what’s to come.

People complaining about the quantity of Metallica albums on this list don't get that this list also carry the weight of showing albums that change the history of music, which Metallica, either you like it or not, played a huge role. They are the biggest metal band ever. Probably not the best, but definitely the biggest. ... And Justice for All is a record that even the biggest fan of the band will give their two cents about the melodic parts and the dimmed bass lines in the final product. This record is the first with the bass player Jason Newsted, after the tragic passing of the great Cliff Burton. The bass is there, and you can hear it I. The fan remix called "... and Justice for Jason" on YouTube. The tour that followed this record paved the path for Metallica's future sound, which reached it's peak with the following self-titled record nicknamed "black album", making the band worldwide famous and therefore, the biggest metal band of all time. But if you don't like it, it's fine. Just don't say "sound the same to me" - that just shows how shallow your musical analysis is.

good stuff

Metallica is one of the few heavy metal bands I can bear to listen to. They just do it differently. Massively talented at their instruments and great lyricists. Top tracks: Blackened, One, The Frayed Ends of Sanity

To me Metallica is the one band of this genre that can compare to Black Sabbath. A pretty good album overall. 4 stars or B.

one is my favorite otherwise te3ebt

I can't get into metal. I'll curl my lip at a decent decent riff, and I've been known to lightly headbang, but something about me is just not able to connect to this music. There's a great moment in "Some Kind of Monster" where Lars Ulrich's dad is asked what he's thinks of their new material. He takes a breath and says "if you were to ask me, I would say...delete that." Listening to this, I agree with him. And yet, "...And Justice For All" is clearly not rubbish: the recording is a bit tinny, but it's musically ambitious, and virtuosically played - double-pedal bass drum semiquavers, athletic guitar solos and all that - but it feels like listening to a band playing studies - impressive, but cold, and humourless. (The only chuckle I had was imagining that "Harvester of Sorrow" was a review of a suburban pub chain. Given that words are "Anger / Misery / You'll suffer unto me", I don't think Metallica liked the carvery.) A lot of the songs are episodic, shifting time signatures and tempi between sections - many of the tracks are nearly ten minutes, and the whole album clocks in at over an hour, which requires prog-levels of concentration from the listener. But who is it for? Who wants earnest 10 minute epics about the rape of justice, or ecological destruction? People who really want to shock their mum? And there are so many words! Combined with Hetfield's abrasive monotone, it's like being pumelled repeatedly with an angry thesaurus. As befits a total metal wuss like me, my favourite bits were the quieter sections, such as the all-too-brief acoustic breaks in "To Live Is To Die", or the gentle opening to "One", both blessed relief from an hour-plus assault of crunchy overdrive. But overall, an exhausting experience. Time for a cup of tea and some Leonard Cohen.

People hold this up as a canonical, definitive metal album, but I just find it boring. Super loud distortion and great musicianship, fine. But the songs are quite dull and go on for ages without any interesting developments. Little by way of hooks or riffs. That said, I think One is fantastic and elevates this up to a 3.

Fire album, I'm not always a fan of Metallica's non-hit songs but I really felt theyre top class in this album. I love One, really evocative lyricism alongside fire (and somewhat approachable) metal guitar writing

I was enjoying it more than I expected, but then every song felt like the same thing. Apparently metal can become background music.

Metallica is by no means bad. In fact, it's a good-sounding metal that's instantly recognizable as theirs, especially paired with Hetfield's vocals. Those aspects can also create weaknesses. The songs are long and the music itself can get repetitive, which is okay for background music, but not so much for focused listening. Obviously, the best song on here is "One", and it also happens to have the most variety. "To Live Is to Die" is also excellent, especially the beginning and end guitar riffs. I did enjoy listening to the album as a whole, despite the typical complaints.

Metal is just an instant no. It's very hard to find metal music that doesn't make me want to kill myself.

Sometimes I just need an album that gets me absolutely amped up in the morning after a previous night at work that exhausted me. This album did just that, and while slightly longer than an hour I was too busy rocking out to even really notice.

Oh wow! I've gotten a lot I've already heard already, this being the 4th one! I love this album, and out of the Metallica I've heard already this is my favorite. 01. Blackened A fuckin' incredible opener!!! Although not my favorite track off the album, this is beautiful!!!! 02. ...And Justice For All Has always been my favorite! One of my favorite title tracks, and a masterclass in metal. 03. Eye Of The Beholder Not my favorite, but still kick-ass. Everything about this is awesome... except for the pre-chorus. I think that sounds really awkward. 04. One Such a beautiful song. This is a classic for a reason. Even though it's not my personal favorite from the album, it's no doubt a classic song. 05. The Shortest Straw Not a bad song, but just a bit boring compared to the others. 06. Harvester Of Sorrow Another one of the weaker songs. Has always been my least favorite. Just uninteresting compared to the others. 07. The Frayed Ends Of Sanity A really underrated one! I love this song a lot! That chorus is infectious! 08. To Live Is To Die An incredible instrumental piece. It doesn't waste a second. 09. Dyers Eve An incredible closer! The shortest track, but it end-caps in a great way. Couldn't pick a better closer. Now I've sung my praises for this album the entire time, so why is it not five stars? Because of that middle portion. It's the usual length, but due to how boring I found the middle portion it feels like it drags on for SOOO long. It's like a 4.9.

Garbage....

The pinnacle of Metallica’s prog metal leanings - it’s just unfortunate that this album sounds so terrible. The EQ of the guitars, the thinness of the drums and lack of any real bass guitar - I still don’t understand why they’ve never gone back and remixed it. It could be a 5.

um gênero, banda, álbum e músicas certamente interessantes – porém para outras pessoas.

alguns momentos bons mas metal não me desce muito mesmo

I like Metallica but I've never actually listened to a full album before. This was mostly good. Really long songs but they only sometimes felt like they dragged on too long. Enjoyable guitar solos. I like the progression of different sections of each song and how they transition into one another. 7/10

Solid Metallica - it's no Black Album but I might like it even better than Master of Puppets.

you like that one frequency between very low (like 100hz) and like lower mid? (400hzish?) yeah, you'll love this album lol I listened to the original version without the bass improvements, and i gotta admit, it's still pretty heavy. I've heard the fan "improvements" do bring back the clearly missing bass element, but it is what it is There are some really poignant and strong songs on this one, with great lyrics that reference the evils of greed and capitalism and war and imperialism. It's dope. It definitely starts strong, but then it gets one note-ish pretty fast. It's a heavy metal album for metalheads, and I can't admit that I'm one of them. It does have my fav metallica song in "One" though, such a great song...great phrasing and riffing and a very strong build up and climax...all along with the most real as fuck lyrics I think the bad has ever put into one song. Anywho, I think if there were more impressive moments like that this would be regarded as iconic. I think a 3 is fair, because I know they have a better album than this.

First off, I needed every song to be AT LEAST 3 minutes shorter if not more. I found the drumming and chuggy chords repetitive and horrifically boring. The vocals certainly didn't save anything either - the lyrics were cringy at best, and the delivery I am not a fan of at all (James Hetfield tried to end a word without saying "AH" impossible challenge). All that being said, somehow I liked this album slightly more than their self-titled (and I am not looking forward to there being 2 more albums after this, like please spare me). 2.5/5 rounded down because I fundamentally don't understand metal Favorite tracks: Eye of the Beholder, One

Metallica was a band that I used to listen to a lot back when I was getting into heavy music. I even have their five first albums in physical, all on CD except for "Kill 'Em All" which I have on vinyl (and actually was my very first vinyl ever). "...And Justice For All" is the last one I got, and I remember being quite excited, when they gifted it to me, of completing the collection of their most important albums. My enthusiasm seemed to last short, as when I heard it, almost nothing really hit me as other material from the band did, and it actually never grew on me, not even a little bit. Today, after so many years, I have to listen to this again, and for my disgrace, the combination of never caring for it and me growing tired of this band made for a quite bad experience. I know that Metallica is no strangers to composing lengthy tracks, but damn these ones feel excessively long. There is a lot of repetition, specially of the riffs, and me thinking most of them aren't heavy or entertaining result in some hard to sit through experiences. I'm specially thinking of "...And Justice for All", "The Shortest Straw", "Harvester of Sorrow" and "The Frayed Ends of Sanity". First one at least has some clean sections that are very elegant, but the other ones are just really difficult to get through, specially the last one mentioned. Now that I made reference to the elegant parts, I'll admit that they are quite decent, and some of the most memorable moments in the album, even thought they are just present in the homonymous track, "To Live Is to Die" and "One". Speaking of "One", hands down the best track of the album and totally understandable why so many people consider it to be the definitive Metallica song. I like a lot the dramatic tone created by the bleak and horrifying lyrics inspired in the "Johnny Got His Gun" book, and the clean and classy intro. What I enjoy the most about the song is its progression, getting heavier, more aggressive and energetic as it goes, forming a very natural flow that ends in a very satisfying way. Undoubtedly a great track, and for me, basically the only song I do truly like about the album. Back to the things I don't vibrate with... I don't care for the solos, and there are a lot of them, but that is basically a "me problem" with guitar solos in general, and not Metallica in particular. Besides, I did also notice that James Hetfield's vocals are incredibly similar from track to track, adding to my exhaustion. To end the review in a more positive note, I actually appreciate a lot the political and social criticism the lyrics present, so there is at least that. In conclusion, I do not dig this album at all. I don't think it is particularly heavy nor entertaining, and there is also the irony factor of the album being called "...And Justice for All" when they basically left behind the bass.

You know something isn’t for you when you start pretending the lyrics are various emphasis on the Pokémon Togepi. Incredibly boring with the ugliest drumkit I’ve ever heard.

I do not like

I'm always impressed by how metal bands use guitar as percussion. The melodies and even the licks/solos are SO in line with that lead drum. And Metallica is best at it. Highlights: One, To Live Is To Die

Track By Track Blackened - Here we go! Atmospheric opening. Rock, metal, energy to start. It’s a little more intense than punk. An apocalyptic feel I expected from this genre! It’s somehow on the same level (kind of) of Queen or Muse’s epic songs in terms of rhythmic shifts and structure. At least that’s where my brain goes. The very stabby power chords communicate the harshness and maleness (!) of it all quite well. Guitars are pretty decent as well. Great soloing, though it’s not the style I usually dig. …And Justice For All - Lovely little intro here. Reminds me of Zeppelin a touch. I really would’ve been fine without the ensuing thrashy part. They are quite the tight band though. Great rhythm section. Seems like he’s speaking/singing/shouting about corruption and politics. Slightly long and indulgent. And intense. Eye Of The Beholder - Intense start! It’s definitely continuing the themes of oppression, political commentary & rebellion in the lyrics. It’s a little nihilistic though. The guitar in many instances throughout this and the album becomes an instrument of noise rather than melody. All of the instruments sound very blended and close as well. Kind of seamlessly. One - Really quite distressing lyrics. Sad and desolate riff and music. Almost recalls westerns or something similar, particularly with that effect on guitar. To be honest it’s nice to have a change in pace. It’s speaking about a veteran, from what I gather. Some nice guitar parts. The Shortest Straw - This is a bit noisy and I don’t think I like it! Again, strong guitar though. It’s also like in this and the punk genre they just say words and phrases a lot! Maybe that’s reductive but hey! Harvester of Sorrow - Quite decent riff here. Epic one! Another long intro. Almost comical lyrics. E.g. ‘anger, misery’ etc. But also just dark! I’ve said it a few times now, but impressive guitar work, gotta say. The Frayed Ends of Sanity - Slight rhythm change, which is good! Despite being in same key. Pirates??? Would Christopher Lee have enjoyed this album I wonder? He was a metal guy apparently. Quite apocalyptic imagery towards the end. I wonder if some of this could be slower to have more effect? Not sure. To Live Is To Die - Again, like the more slow, almost medieval intro. Always. Here for it. Then the rest of the song starts… not as good in my opinion. It’s like their own concept of living and dying. I don’t much like it but I can appreciate it. Also the little swells of strings, nice touch. Although I’m grateful to hear anything other than shouting or heavy guitar power chords at this point! Also liked the outro. Really would’ve just preferred that for the whole song. Dyers Eve - A violent cutting off of that delicate outro belonging to the previous track! They do love that thrashy metal, do Metallica. I mean the name kind of gives it away. Finishes in true Metallica fashion, with heavy and intense chords and drumming. Even faster this time actually. Angry. Potentially cathartic. But didn’t love. Overall Review: Came into this expecting not to enjoy it and to be met mostly with intensity. I was almost right. I liked when the rhythm and speed varied and we got something a bit different, particularly with those dexterous little guitar licks. I do also think the album cover communicates the themes quite well. It just wasn’t for me musically and everything was about 4 minutes too long. As good an intro as any to this intense genre. 1.5/5 Favourite Songs: The guitar parts of One, To Live Is To Die (the intro)

This is a monster of a metal album and bloody incredible. Still goes hard.

James Hetfield absolutely fucks on the guitar. That’s no question. This was a really fun riff lidden album. Lyrically, I’m not feeling anything much, but honestly I’ve never really resonated with this band for that anyways. This really feels like a bunch of divorced dads who hate their ex-wives and coming together for the greater good of humanity.

I get it Metallica is a band that literally needs no intro and yet this album feels like one that never gets its true intro. It bleeds into itself and feels like it never lets up. The dynamic between the band feel undercooked it is as if they are just playing the solos are showy and impressive but what are they showcasing. It is just talent and talent is amazing but art is more than talent it is expression. What they express to us is they want us to mosh and moshing is fun but if that is all I expected more. Maybe lyrically it’s there like on One but upon listen I just feel as if it has been left in its time. I like art with more layers. I like this as an experience for my week but I won’t find myself coming back to appreciate what they were trying to do. I heard the Black Album last night by happenstance to fall asleep seriously and sleep with one eye open blows every single song off this out of the water it’s just levels and it’s not to compare art but it just feels like a different version of the same band yet without the wonderlust I had. This is enjoyable as it piece to accompany what this band did next or before I’m Not even sure how many albums are in in the list

Technically quite impressive. Odd production decision to have next to no bass in the mix. It makes everything sound kinda thin.

Is this a perfect album? Maybe. I eould say a couple songs and a few facepalming lyrics keep it from being a 5. It's probably a 5

Favorite track(s): Blackened, ...And Justice for All, One I'd love to give this one a 4 to boost the miserable reputation of metal in this list but this album unfortunately pulled the shortest straw. Heard before Previous rating: 7/10

80s Metallica is the best Metallica, but I still never loved it. There are some good songs here; there just aren’t enough of them.

Sorry Raphael

sorry, I can't

Great album! Forgot how good it was! Classic Metallica

Although I can admire and appreciate it, I'm just not an angry enough person (or at least I wasn't an angry enough teenager) to get any enjoyment out of metal. Thanks to 80s skateboard videos I can tolerate some hardcore, but I couldn't do a whole album, and sure enough, I had to break this extended up into more palatable chunks. I had no real perception about 1988 Metallica - obviously Enter Sandman is ok, plus I've seen "some kind of monster" so I knew roughly what I was letting myself in for, but what did they sound like before that? Well, it turns out that it's early metal - some fast hardcore stuff, some double-pedal semiquaver, athletic guitar solos - the only thing that would indicate it's age is the rather tinny sound of the drums. I can't dismiss it as total bobbins: it's musically adventurous and very skillfully played. But why does it have to be so abrasive? Why does the vocal have to be so monotonal? Who wants a 10 minute epics about justice being raped? Why does it have to be so earnest? It's ridiculous. The best bits were the all-too-brief acoustic breaks in "To Live Is To Die" - blessed relief from an hour-plus assault of crunchy overdrive. Ah, overall an exhausting experience. Time for a cup of tea and some Simon and Garfunkel.

A great metal album by "the" metal band. Favorite song is definitely One. Nothing out of place, all cohesive, an all timer.

Good album. One is a killer song. But in my opinion some songs are way too long. But like I said. A good album and I enjoyed it. So: 4/5

This was a big album for me in my teens.

nao o melhor deles mas still mto bom

I think this is my favourite Metallica album. Loses a star because there's no bass.

Kill em all, ride the lightning och master of puppets är alla bättre och roligare. Även, av renläriga töntar, utskällda black album är bättre än den här. Men hyfsat stark 3a förtjänar den väl i alla fall

Stark trea! Ruggigt bra drag. Perfekt musik för söndagens tur. Starten fram tills The shortest straw var riktigt stark

Den här gången låter metallica mest som ett gäng 14-åringar I nåt garage

All around great metal ablum, its no megadeth but thats probably for the best lol. plus it has some classics, ie One

This is Metallica on like their B game, which is better than 99% of bands on their A 9/10

The one in between the thrash-era peak Master of Puppets and the softer, more commercial (in relative terms) black album. One is the clear standout here, although other great tunes such as Blackened make this another top class metal album

Classic thrash metal by the masters of the genre . Great but does not have the nuances of some of the other metallica albums , or short songs. This should not really be on the list - especially as Ride the Lightning is not there.

Can't stop banging my head!

Songs like One, And Justice for All, and Harvester of Sorrow are eye opening. But too much of the album is still to technical / thrash… not like Master of Puppets or Ride the Lightening… just not classic love to listen to like the Black album.

In 1988 this would have been an easy 5 for me. Listening now, it's just not as good as I remember. ...And Justice for Jason

Gotta admit I kinda dig this shit

Great album!!!!!!!

Don’t like

This is an all time classic album, bit the no bass kills me.

The one thing you can always say about Metallica is that they are always very technical and very tightly controlled in how they play. I feel like this often works to their benefit and to their detriment. I don't mind at the beginning of the album, but it just becomes pretty old, pretty fast. All the songs feel quite long and I find it quite hard to differentiate them from each other. The last track, though, is very jarring. It starts and ends in a very bizarre way and I don't feel any of it makes sense with the rest of the album. Granted, I like it more than some of the other stuff on the album. I just don't feel like it relates at all to what I've listened to. Fav Track: One

“One” is the best heavy metal song to have ever been written. It alone helps this otherwise pretty standard Metallica album.

I was not expecting that. I was about to tick this up as a one-trick pony show. But then “One” came on. I wanted to cry and punch holes in the wall at the same time. Reading the lyrics, I’m almost certain that they’re referencing Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (great novel). I then took a closer listen to what Metallica was doing musically and lyrically. Ya know, I can really appreciate the technical skill and creativity behind this.

Lulu > Ride the Lightning > And Justice For All
