Great Album. Classic MEtallica. It starts hard and stays through the entire setlist.

The whole album is full of high-level artistry and thoughtful lyrics and kick ass music. One of Metallica’s towering achievements. Copy/paste this link to read the whole thing: https://tinyurl.com/2jmuusf4
underrated masterpiece of metal
A total metal classic that doesn't have any bass (that's hearable anyway) and has songs that go on way too long. But it wouldn't feel right giving this a 4 because of that, because there are too many moments of straight awesomeness that I'm forced to give it a 5. Metallica is awesome
I decided on a whim to start this project, and so here's the first of hopefully 1001 album reviews. The first album I got is the classic Metallica record. ...And Justice For All. Despite being a fan of this band I can't say I'm all too familiar with this record outside of One, Blackened, and Harvester of Sorrow. All of these are amazing tracks. I do worry about the infamous bass production. Review: This album has some of Metallica's greatest tracks period. This is likely the best album to show Lars's underrated drumming (He's still a tool). The guitar work is absolute perfection and features perhaps Metallica's most political lyrics. Despite how much I loved this album, it has its share of flaws. Most famously, it is the terrible production that makes the bass nearly impossible to hear. Considering how important the bass was on the first three albums this feels very wrong, especially considering how Jason had the heavy task of replacing Cliff Burton. In addition, the drums are often too loud. The song's length while sometimes great can at times be excessive. This is a true heavy metal classic but its production faults prevent me from calling it a masterpiece. Regardless, this album's highs far outweigh its lows and in my opinion, the songs are just so good that it can be possible to excuse the poor production. Score:8/10 Best track:One Least Favorite track:To Live is To die Current Rank:1 Closing Thoughts Great first album! I truly can't wait until this project continues. I'll try and get it on either CD or Vinyl (Hopefully Vinyl so I can one day complete Metallica's classic albums) I'm excited to see what I get tomorrow! Current List 1. ...And Justice For All-Metallica 8/10
My favourite Metallica album, and one I’ve loved for thirty-some years. Yes, the bass is non-existent, and arguably Master of Puppets is a ‘better’ album but that doesn’t matter - as a body of work it is simply great.

Great album
One of my childhood classics
This was the soundtrack of my run this morning. I am currently reading about the origins of indie hardcore. Bands like Black Flag and Minor Threat. Husker Du's "Landspeed Record" featured 17 songs in 26 minutes...and that includes the last track that was 6 minutes long. Metallica went the other way, 9 songs in 65 minutes. I love this stuff so much.
Man oh man was ...And Justice For All a great album. I have always heard from various different sources that this album was not very well produced but other than the bass not being very hearable (for lack of a better word)(and even then, it's common to not be able to hear the bass unless you listen closely in most metal tracks) it was pretty well mixed with it sounding as crisp and clean as you can get. Every song, of course, was incredible with them ranging from fast and ferocious thrash metal, to slower and more melodic technical metal. I absolutely love this album so much. Best Song: One Worst Song: To Live Is to Die
One of the big 4 for a reason. One of their best albums and a banger all the way through. 5/5
Gostoso demais
A metal classic and rightly so, what an album. Heavy when it can, but with quieter intros etc... it's not just full pelt the whole time and it is very listenable. There is excellent virtuosity here but it's all functional. I almost took one point off for the production. A lot of Metallica is about the interlocking of the kick drum and the bass, almost sounding as one instrument giving a solid basis on top of which the guitars and vocals can shine. However, the kick drum sounds quite tinny (I listened on a good stereo) and the bass is... where is the bass? A pity, this album could sound better but I'll still call it a 5 purely for the quality of the music.
M M M Metallica \m/
This is why I need to reserver five star ratings on this list. This album deserves it like few others (but I definitely still have a few higher favorites). It's technical, clean, and never stops pushing forward for the entire thing. "One" is still one of my favorite song intros of all time, but there are so many bangers on this album. Five stars. That's all I can say.

Blistering raw classic Metallica album! Blackened, And justice for all, One, Harvester of Sorrow, shortest straw all jams. 1001 album worthy: Absolutely - 5/8
Fantastic album, my favourite metallica album
It is impossible, in my mind, to separate my impressions of this album from the cataclysmic psychic impact of Metallica’s first ever music video (they had famously refused to make videos when such a thing was absolutely astonishingly a “fuck you” to the big business of metal inspired-rock, and a real statement of thrash metal integrity. We are here for music). A performance video interlaced with clips from the anti-war classic Johnny Got His Gun from the blacklisted Dalton Trumbo. The horrors of being exploded, losing all limbs and all ability to communicate, see, hear, the protagonist's subjectivity exists only in his mind, screaming to be heard. Outside, he is an objective, a test subject, a freak show, so much human meat. Even with Lars's serious drum/coke face mugging, it exists as a triumph to metal on metal's terms, "War Pigs" for the eighties. Bleak truth for truly bleak times, and the harbinger of that goodtimes torpor of the only me decade would come to a crashing end. Popular music, in all its permutations, could do more than bitches and money. And shortly after, it shortly did, before the rotten products of big business churned out the clone army, Metallica became rock stars, and that was that. After Cliff died, the band recorded Garage Days Re-Visited, a rough and ready covers E.P. with new bassist Jason Newsted, and it is my favorite Metallica record because it is rough, punk in its ethos, super fun and you can hear Jason ably laying down the low end. It was a great fit. Too bad, and for entirely bizarre reasons, his contributions to "And Justice" are almost conceptual, or a trace. A bass is in there. A bass should be there, and yet, years before the White Stripes conquerer Alternative Rock, it's Hatfield providing the low end, via guitar. Bafflingly, the various anniversary remixes have not corrected this. It has been about thirty years since I listened to "And Justice" front to back; with recent innovations in both cannabis and sound equipment, there is an uncanniness at work, a familiar made unfamiliar. I find myself noticing details flying out of the relentless full-on brutality of the attack overall. It's a weirdly new wave mix— but all guitar and drums and vicious barking of apocalyptic pessimism that drag on longer than they should yet don't feel that way at all—rather than synth driven concise, airless midrange, The sequencing is totally ace; there's little point to pulling out and highlighting the songs because each are part of a hole. Defiantly thrash, there are not singles, save for "One", which became a single because record companies like singles, but it is not a single of its time. It's not Bon Jovi or Bryan Adams. It harkens back to when some singles were like revolutionary pronouncements, not mere product, closer in structure to "Bohemian Rhapsody" than "Livin' On a Prayer", and there is no ersatz rocking here; they came to tear you apart with precise subjective truths about the Post-Reagan world, the exigence to this dystopian hellscape: This country is fucked. And that's how it felt. That's how it feels now. But with better weed and headphones. With this album, everybody else is chasing the thrash beast Metallica. By the end of the eighties/beginning of the nineties, the leading lights of, including the so-called Big Four, Thrash would release their idiosyncratic, refined and masterful takes on the genre. Rivals Megadeth would drop Rust in Peace. Anthrax would drop Persistence of Time. Slayer would unleash Seasons in the Abyss. Better still, Voivod beamed Nothingface from Dimension Hatröss to an unsuspecting planet, and Overkill would offer a thrash elegy with The Years of Decay. This period would also produce the grumpy gatekeepers debating "real thrash" and whether any of these folks sold out. The Black Album would answer that question for Metallica—however you think about that record. But this re-visit, in this moment in time, it's difficult to conceive of "...And Justice" in generic terms. It is a singular, coherent vision of existential dread, like the cracks in the iconic statuary cover illustrate, knowing that our collective self-delusion about America and Americans, reveal capricious violence and avarice as the truth national credo.
great metal album, classic metallica
Gotta love old school Metallica.
made me feel really fckn cool
Metallica - ...And Justice For All Wow! This is my first metal album that I've ever heard, and also my introduction to Metallica, never expected to enjoy it. This album is PACKED with bangers, and that's saying something since "apparently" Metallica has made better albums than even this one, which is already amazing in itself. There are moments on this album where you just listen and feel it in your soul (I almost shed a tear when listening to "To Live is To Die" ;) ) this is great!! 1.- Blackened = 8/10 2.- ...And Justice for All = 9/10 3.- Eye of the Beholder = 9/10 4.- One = 10/10 5.- The Shortest Straw = 8/10 6.- Harvester of Sorrow = 9/10 7.- The Frayed Ends of Sanity = 9/10 8.- To Live is To Die = 10/10 9.- Dyers Eve = 9/10 FINAL SCORE: 9
best fucking Metallica album
Wicked
another one from metallica, this one just as epic and aggressive as the last one. with a strong sociopolitical centered theme, this one packs a punch. many people think this album is poorly mixed, but the instrumental and lyrical content really prevented me from actually noticing. it's just a really good metal album, like most others in metallica's discography.
9/10 This is their best album in my opinion Favourite Song=One Least Favourite Song=Dyers Eve
Top notch
Great album start to finish.
Despite Lars deliberately killing Jason Newsted’s bass, this is one terrific album. Their songs grew longer, more technical, yet still with memorable riffs. Everything about this album is exquisite. They moved beyond simple Thrash with this one. Probably their best.
Metal at its finest...
One of the formative albums of my youth. I had a tshirt with this album cover on it back in junior high. And what an album it is. Front to back, just pure thrash metal goodness. Yes, it's dumb that the bass is turned so low it's practically gone. But other than that everything is stellar. The lyrics are thought-provoking, the guitars are pure metal bliss.
It’s Metallica, it’s obviously brilliant.
Love the album. Guitar solo is amazing as always!!
Metallica is a heavy metal jam band. 9 songs, 65 minutes. Long, winding solos. 5 stars.
Love this album, listened to it a billion times.
Did not listen that closely, but it rocks!
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Great album. Only way to pay this is loud.
All I did was look at the cover art and suddenly James Hetfield was in my living room yelling "DARKNESS IMPRISONING ME"
Oh yeah
Amazing album. Although I rank Master of Puppets a little higher, I am always wowed every time I listen, even to the songs I like "least" on the album.
Favourite songs: Dyers Eve, Blackened, Harvester of Sorrow, One, ...And Justice for All, The Frayed Ends of Sanity, To Live Is To Die Least favourite songs: none 5/5
It's the best Metallica album. Yes, the bass isn't in the mix but it's a snapshot in time of a band at their peak, before it went downhill.
The album that introduced me to Metallica. Biting social commentary, combined with aggressive riffs really helped shape my understanding of the world as a teen.
Lars is a piece of shit and he always will be, but it's still tough for me to give this anything but a 5
Perfect album from start to finish.
...And Justice For Jason
#320. Some say Metallica sold out when they made a video for One, and some argue that they didn't, but it became very much clear that they did when the next album came out. Oh well, we can't have everything, I guess. At least we did have 4 great albums from them, each new one that came out better than the last, culminating with this masterpiece of thrash. 5/5: perfect.
I definitely did not listen to this when it came out. Now that I'm a middle aged adult I want to play it so loud my ears hurt.
Probably my favorite Metallica album. It's just got that extra level of thrash.
That's One of the Best metal Records in the world
Alternative title: NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL no BASS VOL. 4! A worthy follow up to Master of Puppets - hit upon hit upon hit, but sometimes it's great to just take the time to listen to 'To Live Is to Die' in its' entirety.
Metallica’s first albums relied heavily on Burton’s impressive bass playing - it’s a big part of what makes them so good! After his tragic death the band chose to somehow honor his legacy by producing an album with almost no discernible bass … And it turned out to be one of their greatest accomplishments.
Great sounds from the greatest metal band ever. Classic.
4.9
Classic. Excellent album!
This album is like straight out of a hospital's surgery operating room. It's chillingly cold, dry, and delicately intricate. But amidst the alcohol smelling vibe is a dark and visceral core which dominates the entire room. The cover art alone tells it, I just love how Metallica's cover art looks exactly what it sounds like. Been avoiding this album for a while but man this kicks as hard as their other early stuff.
I’ve listened to this album countless times and knew that this would be an easy 5/5 for me. \m/
That album
A 70-minute workout for your neck muscles. Solos shred, riffs roar, and even the missing bass can't dampen this thrashterpiece!
Very nice.
One of my favorite Metallica albums. Long, long songs. I don't remember being angry enough or energetic enough to love this album as much as I did in the past. Songs about war. Songs about murder. It's a trip.
No words.
One of my first introductions to Metallica when I was at school. The album was passed around a group of friends. Absolutely hooked me in and have been listening to them ever since, nearly 40 years. One of their best albums in my opinion, love it.
-this album is fucking amazing -one of my favorites from Metallica -I know, the production is weird, because "bass is nonexistent" -the cover fits the themes of the album -it's progressive -it's aggressive -it rocks! -some of the best Metallica songs are on this album -each member did an amazing job on this album -favorite songs: Blackened (<3), the title track, One (<3) [this is also my most favorite Metallica song], The Shortest Straw, Harvester Of Sorrow, To Live Is To Die, Dyers Eve -least favorite song: The Frayed Ends Of Sanity
This was my entry album to Metallica, and to thrash metal. I rented it on cassette and remember being shocked but captivated by what I heard. By this point this LP is ingrained in my blood. I listened again because who needs an excuse to listen to Justice?
It has some faults, we all know about the production issues but it's still a great album and is the last great album from Metallica. What a great 4 album run.
5⭐️ always. Great performers, great music, lots of substance.
The best of the best.
Great music. Enjoyed it way more than Master of Puppets
Ok this was awesome. Could be the album that gets me into Metallica finally. Guitar is great on every track. Album maybe a little long but not gonna mark it down for that.
Incluye la mejor canción de Metallica. Vinilo.
I mean… this was never my scene. My best friend in high school discovered them when kill em all came out. I listened, and this band developed and seems to be the curriculum of metal. Obviously they are gifted as musicians and have the ability to stay relevant no matter what other music fans believe. This is a band and an album that should be respected- all emotions aside.
Most progressive Metallica Album. I love it! Cool!
have long loved
Easy 5 stars
no tengo mucho q decir tengo sueño sin embargo lo escuche regresando de Colon a la capital y me despertó, increíbles riffs y solos energizantes. Es un 10/10.
I really can't get enough of Metallica's first 4 albums. For whatever reason, I tend to listen to this one less often than the previous 3 when I need an old school Metallica fix so I figured I'd listen to Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets before I listened to this one (it was a good day). All I can say is, they are all metal masterpieces. I love them all. So sad that Cliff died but I didn't feel like it made this album any less enjoyable. The real bummer is how, after producing such amazing work, nothing Metallica has done since holds a candle to this.
Metallica.
Most days, Puppets is my favorite Metallica album; Justice second. Still five stars, no notes.
Stunning thrash, redefining the whole genre.
A metal masterpiece. Their last good album.
Great album!
While this was not my introduction to Metallica, this album opened the door to what they were like before they released the Black album. I'm not even sure I liked it the first time I heard it - this happens often with me most times with albums that are seen as a masterpiece. It's brilliant, brutal, extremely dark - you can practically feel the pain that this band was going through after the accidental death of their bassist Cliff Burton. While not my favorite of theirs, it's in the Top 3.
This is one of those albums that defined my early high school years. I practically wore out the cassette on trips to and from school on the bus. Though I never liked the clicky kick sound and lack of any bass guitar in the mix, this still holds up well for me. I can't give this 4.5 stars so it gets its 5.
Coming to most of Metallica's early catalog as a more mature listener definitely highlights the raw appeal of the early thrash entries, but without all the expectation and disappointment to get over when Black came later - been enjoying everything they've thrown at me (despite years of hearing how bad a drummer Lars is). "Epic" as a descriptor has long fallen into overuse, but some of the riffs and songs here actually beg the term. "One" and "...And Justice For All" are a pretty neat pair of melodic treats.
Absolutely Nuts gotta be the best metal album of all time wtf
So happy to listen to this lying on the sofa doing nothing
Absolute banger
Iconic. Some of Metallica’s best songwriting. Would be an all time great album if it were mixed slightly better.
🤘😝 5
Hold my breath as I wish for death. Oh please God, wake me..
Not even close to the best Metallica album, but it's still pretty shreddy and bombastic, like good thrash should be. The lyrical themes stay topical to this day. It's a weaker thrash album, but it was signaling metal's eventual move to mainstream music. On a list of other thrash albums, I would put this one lower. But since it's on this list, 4.5/5.
Listen to the better bass mix on YouTube!
Eins meiner ersten Alben: Viel gehört und liebgewonnen. Vielleicht nicht das beste Album aber kontinuierlich immer oben mit dabei. All die Jahre ...
Liked the lyrics, eternally relevant, rock riffs were tight but not quite my style
First of all the song "One" is a masterpiece. This is a great album by Metallica. It's heavy, the songs are long but don't get repetetive and it's very melodic while still being thrash metal. The downside is the mixing. The drums are too prominent and the bass is barely there.
Rating: 10/10 A classic, one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time. The band really pushes themselves by incorporating more progressive elements in their music; the average song is 7 minutes and each one takes you on a journey. This is definitely their most technical album, the guitars are so locked in and Lars' drumming is the best it ever was. I really enjoyed the angry political messages throughout and the solos are all fantastic. The production gets a lot of hate but I think it matches the music perfectly, I wish the bass was audible though. Favorite songs: pretty much all of them. Least favorite song: The Shortest Straw.
Wasn't looking forward to Metallica, but this was gooooood
1st cd I ever bought. Had no idea until adulthood how socially poignant the lyrics are, even to this day.
Great album, perfect start to this insanity! One (obviously) and Frayed Ends of Sanity were particular highlights
Iconic album for its time and genre of music. Legendary!
Was one of my intros into metal, changed how I thought music could be. Left a lasting impression and have been chasing that heavy sound ever since.
Listened complete many times!!! Outstanding album!
Absolute banger. My second favourite Metallica Album.
Putting the lack of bass in the mix to one side, I’d forgotten how good this album was. Watching One being performed by Metallica on the television when I was 10 is why I play guitar 🤘
thrash metal perfection. possibly my favourite metallica album, although there are several great ones. rock solid from start to finish. highlights: “one”, “the shortest straw”, “harvester of sorrow”
Previously rated: S&M (3/5) Master of Puppets (5/5) Metallica (4/5) **************************** My brother owned this album back when it was new, so I was familiar with it, though I haven't heard it in 30 years. I liked it then. Let's see what I think now. It holds up extremely well, and for not hearing it in a long time, I remembered most of the tracks, except for the last three. This is some bad-ass metal and a good reminder why Metallica was considered the best thrash band in the world. Top notch guitar solos, and I love, love the drumming. Lars Ulrich gets a lot of crap nowadays, but damn he nails it here. Blackened is an amazing opening track and probably my favorite on the album. Other favorites: Everything except maybe To Live Is To Die, which is fine, just not as memorable as the others. Ends with a banger too - Dyer's Eve may be the heaviest track on the album.
Masterpiece of metal and aggression, setting the tide for the metal scene, opening up more sub-genres than pure thrash. Containing One of the greatest songs ever recorded.
Some of the most iconic songs of metal are on this record. The influence of every young guitar player and metal head since 88 is undeniable.
One of my all-time favorite metal bands!
What a genuine pleasure it was to complete a generated album for the day on vinyl. I mean...what more is there to even to say about this album? It's perfect. It's helped me lose 100 lbs by being plastered all over various workouts playlists. There was never going to be another rating for this album, nor should there be. Favorite track: Eye of the Beholder
Back to my youth! Great ti listen to this again.
This was the first Metallica tape that I owned. Gotta give it a 5 just for nostalgia. Really solid thrash all the way through.
Makes me 25% stronger in the gym.
Raw, edgy, angry! Love it!
The quintessential metal album. I may have first heard the Black Album, but this is where it all started.
This was my first Metallica record. By record I mean literal record, as in big black disc that goes on a turntable. This album blew my young mind. The production quality was terrible but the songs were amazing. I hadn't heard anything like it. I listened to it so many times I know every song note for note. I went down the rabbit hole of all the previous albums. Most of my friends thought it was weird, until the black album came out. Then suddenly I was one of the coolest kids around lol. Listening to it now I'm glad to hear that the production quality has improved dramatically from what it was. Although not the best or my favourite album from Metallica, this will always be a five star album for me.
Classic album. Have listened a bajillion times. Will listen again.
Absolute classic. Love this album.
Fundamental para confirmar toda a beleza do poder do metal \m/
BEST ALBUM YET 10/10
sometimes…a nine minute song too…can be sex. want on vinyl.
Yes Metallica became a joke. But the first 4 are all masterpieces. This, despite the fact that it sounds worse than it could have over some childish hazing, is still an EASY 5. \m/
Metallica. Nough said. But even better, old school Metallica. ❤️ 🔥 \m/
First live gig I ever went to was the Metallica tour for this album. Still as fresh, angry and raw sounding as ever
Standouts: "Blackened," "... And Justice For All," "One" Lyrics/Vocals- 4/5 Instrumentals- 5/5 Vibes- 5/5 Overall- 5/5
Legendary album. A reminder of what metal is at its core. Probably one of the best albums for old heads and new comers to the genre.
Classic Metallica
One of the most complete metal albums recorded. No song misses. While One is arguably Metallicas best song ever, there are less popular songs like Blackened that still sit in Top 10 all time songs for many hardcore fans.
Metallica's finest work. A great album that is as good today as it was when released. ...And Justice For All, except for Jason Newsted.
I wanted to write something intelligent about brutality and extremeness in art, but I can’t think of the right angle to take. So all I can say is that this scratches an itch in my brain in the same way that great Classical does. The layering of riffs and motifs works in such a perfect way. This shit just slaps
No escuchado
Fantastic!
SCC
Damn
4/5
Peak Metallica, great tracks,awesome lyrics.
Classic. Enjoyed it.
I'm quite familiar with this album! I fondly remember how this sounds being played on a cassette boombox while trying to do dumb things on a skateboard. I'm usually not too keen on remasters by the artists or otherwise. I think of albums as a snapshot. Want record the songs again and rerelease them else where? Love it. But don't mess with the original! Anyways, there's a remaster called "...And Justice for Jason" and it's a great listen for anyone who wonders where the bass guitar went in this recording.
fantastic album. rock on top of rock on top of so much rock. they had fun making the album so i had fun listening to it
great
Metallica is always awesome. Heavy metal icons.
An incredible album. Who could've known that shouting in the micro with hard guitars could produce such a melodious experience.
Dear all metal artists that just scream into the microphone, Having talented musicians and intelligible lyrics makes your music MUCH better. After so many one-star reviews of albums like this, Metallica was a really nice change of pace. Very much a fan of this one.
Love the guitar forward opening to the album. All in all lives up to Metallica’s reputation. I can see how they set the bar for the next 15-20 years
Loved it,a lot of people complain about the production on this album but I don’t mind it at all.I think the songs are all killer with some exceptional songs.(blackened, title track, one).A really great album. Some of the songs are too long but i don’t mind that much.
Listened Before? Yes Completely biased 5 / 5 going in. This is Metallica's last "pure" album before commercializing and gaining mega fame with the release of the Black Album. Not to knock the Black Album (at least not outright), but this is the last truly metal album the band made in this era that made zero appeals to radio play. Not a single song under 5 minutes; all super complex long form metal pieces addressing everything from social injustice to the environment and war. I will say that relative to MoP and RtL that preceded this one feels a bit more masturbatory and less organic; even still, this is a fantastic album with amazing musicianship. I have never not been hyped listening to Blackened. Such a great jam. The fade in to sudden splash of drums is such a fine jolt to the system, and the mixing is sterile, but effective -- super punchy snare with a throatful of bass and the crunchy guitars sitting on top of it all. The outro section (beginning around 5 minutes) fucking rips. Love the classically styled intro to the title track that gives way to fine multi-part metal piece. Eye of the Beholder is a bit of an oddball here with the applied vocal effect. Still rips end to end. One has always been among my favorite Metallica songs. I love the pensive intro with virtuouso guitar work, tender and competent singing from Hetfield, and how this devolves into the chaotic double bass thump + guitar riff. Also translates into an amazing live stage show. Shortest Straw is a raw jam. Just pure energy. Frayed Ends might have one of the best guitar solos in the middle of it. Also just a pure metal song start to finish lead by a super heavy, repetitive riff that you can sink your teeth into. Love the intro on To Live Is To Die. Opens with classical plucking and then gives way to a stanky metal trudge with some clean guitar solo work on top. The handover to Dyers Eve is fucking brutal. Good ol' callback to their thrash roots here. Added to Library? Yes Songs Added to Playlists: - Blackened (Skate Mix) - The Shortest Straw (Skate Mix) - Dyers Eve (Skate Mix)
Been listening to this album since I was just a wee lad in 3rd or 4th grade so very biased coming into it. Probably the grungiest of the Metallica albums and it was a great way to end their 80s albums. They definitely switched tone after this with Black album (which is still awesome) and beyond. So many times in the album where the guitar and bass just make me put my stank face on. Top 10 album of all time for me so no doubter of a 5
Some absolute bangers and such a hard album
So many excellent tracks on this. A top shelf classic bit of metal.
Awsome
Goes unbelievably hard. After listening to a lot of modern rock and especially alternative rock I'd think this wouldn't hold up and I always put off listening to it. It's great, while the vocals are slightly annoying the mixing and composition is amazing, the guitars are making sounds I have never heard of. Most of the songs have a good chugging rhythm that makes me want to get up and run. Classic and I get the influence now and why everybody likes it. Notable Songs: Blackened, ...And Justice For All,
Really starting to find their sound here.
For a rockin mood
I don't think I ever listened to its all the way through. It is fantastic. The riffs are cooling and Kirk has some good solos.
An amazing and well known album there's not much I can add to the reviews.
Metal at it's finest!
Wow
This album has some of my favorite Metallica songs on it so I’m biased.
One of my favorite Metallica albums
Still thrashy enough for there roots. The solos are amazing throughout. Lyrics are kinda mid. Stand outs: one, shortest straw, the frayed ends of sanity
Metallica were prog?! Had never managed to get into them because I find the vocals irritating. Luckily this album has loads of deep and thrashy bas propelling it along (albeit too low in the mix), and lots of songs with minimal vocals, which meant that in the end I couldn't quite bring myself to put it off. The time signatures are also a bit of a revelation. I dunno what the answer is, really. Maybe I quite like Metallica when they keep their mouth shut.
Perfect!
Foundational and classic. One of the most important rock records of all time. Can only be a 5
It's the kind of album that makes you wish you had the social confidence to wear a denim jacket with a patch of the album on it. But it's all good, because you're playing Warhammer later, with kids who ARE confident enough to wear such things, and maybe that will rub off on you, who knows? Oh, and by the way, "One" is really rad... it's about a dude who stands on a landmine, you know? Gets himself all kinds of blown up. Cool. Maybe I should grow my hair long?
love this album classic for a reason
One of the best
Amazing musicians. Driving rhythms, killer guitar, unbelievable drum work. “One” Is the big hit.
Bangers only
and justice is good
Yes!
One of my favourites
If the production was better this might be their best album.
Magnificent. Chef's Kiss
their best album that i’ve listened too, with the best instrumentals, riffs, shreds and the chugs, and lyrics, the opening track going straight into it not giving us any breaks. their drums sounding really good in this album and not sounding like random snares. one of their heavier albums. and i also hate the government and the rich, they have political commentary going against how they should shut up since they control everything. and how no one has true has true freedom 5/5
This was the first CD I ever bought and is in contention for the album I have listened to the most times in my life. It's not their best album but every song is possibly the best song on the album. One is one of the greatest songs of all time. Dyers Eve, Frayed Ends of Sanity, Blackened and Shortest Straw are simply some of the greatest metal/trash songs out there. Truly one of the best albums of all time.
🤘One is my favourite Metallica track
One of my all time favorites!
Metal that makes me smile
Excellent discovery. I really liked the album, all the tracks are good.
Probably my second fav M album
One of the best thrash metal albums of all time. It paved a path for prog metal.
Masterpiece front to back
I wonder what's more annoying: How people feel about Lars Ulrich's drumming ability or everyone else for having to listen to these babies whine about Lars' drumming ability every chance they get. Either way, this album was really great and so full of energy. Also maybe the most popular/best Metal song ever in "One". I really enjoyed it. 9/10.
All the songs are solid. One is a metallic classic.
Fucking classic !..!,
I agree that this is an album that everyone should hear. This represents some of the best metal of the 80s, and Metallica is an incredibly tight band. 5/5
An album about political matters, how life experiences can change and mentally affect a person, and grievance. Album feels like a perfectly painted picture from front to back.
First album that a got to review here was an instant classic. As a guy who used to imitate James Hetfield and Dave Mustaine all throughout high school, both in guitar playing and image, I am a bit biased when it comes to rating this record. It was a turning point for me and got me through a lot of tough moments. If you are pissed off at the world and need to release some steam, this is a perfect album for that. Everything has already been said about the flawed mix of this album. The bass is nonexistent. The clean guitars sound dry as a desert. Drums are too loud. Lead tone is harsh. Having said that, the mix makes sense to me and comes together to form a unique atmosphere of hopelessness, rage, grief and overall injustice of the world. Makes total sense that it was written by young men, who have just lost their friend. The riffs on this record are some of Metallica's finest. Don't think I've heard anything quite like this in their later work. The guitar tone adds extra power and aggression to the passages and makes them stand out in your mind l, compared to the rest of their catalogue. Blackened is an absolute banger. One is a heartbreaking masterpiece of a song. Dying eve has one of James's most honest lyrics. Shortest straw is a riffing masterclass. The record still holds up. With a polished Bob Rock sound this material would have lost it's honesty. Still, would be nice to hear some bass from time to time 😁
Lack of bass but it's Metallica
Muito bom! Álbum subestimado. Música preferida: One
Amazing writing. Complex arrangements and timing. Tight guitars and defining drums. Bass too low in the mix enough to deserve a re-release.
Harvester of sorrow, what a track. there's some cheesy bits like the start to frayed ends and One is the track everyone goes on about, but it's a great album throughout
YLLÄPITO...indietä lisää, liian hyviä albumeja viime aikoina..100 hz pömmpöä tv. mestari. noh joo mutta hyvää musiikkia kumminskin vai onko... I just hear repetitive sound and structure, grunted vocals, sophomoric lyrics, thrashy breaks with quick flips back to speed....totta...ehkä worst album of all time.... to live is to die
For me this was the last Metallica album that I really liked. The first album was raw but had great songs and catchy riffs. The second album was somewhat more technical, but still had some rawness. The third album was far more commercial and this one is more of the same. To consistently put out four amazing albums without any real filler is an amazing feat. I don't personally think anything Metallica did after "...and Justice" stands up to this. I saw them on this tour, in Donnington Monsters of Rock I think and it was just after Jason Newsted had joined. He did a great job here trying to cover for Cliff Burton RIP, who obviously had his hand in most of the songs. Powerful and epic from start to finish. Easy 5 stars.
Needs more bass lol
It's a great metal album, probably Metallica's best. I would really like to hear a remastered version with the bottom end brought up though, super high on the treble.
Not my favourite Metallica album... but I firmly believe bad Metallica is still better than a lot of the other shit we have had to listen to.
Classic
Pretty damned good stuff from these guys, another killer classic. 5 stars.
Yes real metal
One of the greatest metal albums of all time.
Awesome!
It's always been their cult album because of it's ropey production but now it's been remastered it has a new life!
It has its issues but great nevertheless.
I was going to give this a 4 until To Live Is To Die. So good.
Classic of Rock n' Roll !!!! What are the drums solos on this album! Wow!!!!
HEAVY FUCKING METAAALLLLLLLL!
Amazing, don’t have any other words for it!
fajne
The first CD that I purchased with my own money! I love "And Justice"; it's so tight and there isn't a weak song on the album. It is unfortunately overshadowed by the massive "Master of Puppets" but to me it is like 1B to MoP being 1A in best Metallica albums. I'm fortunate enough to have listened to this album a TON at one period of my life and then seldom had revisits, so that these songs still have really strong ties to that one period of my life. I think when that happens, the more you listen to an album outside of that period of time the more the connection weakens. For me, this was me playing Triple Play Baseball on my 11th birthday in 2001 and blaring this album through a CD player. Lars Ulrich always gets hate for his drum sounds (the somewhat more recent album "St Anger" is one of the worst snare drum sounds ever), and I don't really mind them on this record. They feel a little thin, but overall Metallica's sound has always leaned more towards tight/compact and drums that are thinner make this objective much easier. The kick drum doesn't conflict with the bass guitar, the cymbals don't conflict with the guitars, etc. One thing I don't like on this record is that there are times where there are fast double bass hits and it almost sounds like they were overdubbed. The tone is less "clicky" and they overpower the mix when they hit. I wouldn't be surprised if the volume was automated to make them more forward/loud in the mix at those times though because it is a cool hammering effect. Good idea, but dated at this point in metal music production. I love the vocal effect on "Eye Of The Beholder". I'd imagine this was pretty experimental at the time for heavy metal. Metallica's "thing" since album 1 was thrash thrash thrash metal. Fast, low maintenance. Distortion on guitars and GO. That's it! Ok maybe a little bit of wah-wah pedal for guitar solos but nothing else. Since Master of Puppets though (the album prior to this) they definitely started to experiment more with things like reverbs, compressors, and even clean tones. Side note- "One" is one of the best examples of metal music using clean guitar tones effectively. That intro is one of the best intros to a metal track of all time and the tone is as clean as it gets. But back to vocals- this effect is cool, it's a warbly effect that I can't quite place. A quick google tells me that it was a Flanger. I love how long their tracks are. They were never afraid of having a metal song that is long and problematic for radio. I think this is one of the strengths of Metallica- that these long songs allowed them to develop themes and have the songs truly sound epic because of where they start, where they go, and where they end up. The average length for a song on this is 7:27 which is really unheard of.
Classic. This album opened up a whole new genre for me back in high school.
I absolutely love 80s heavy metal and thrash metal in particular, so this is an easy 5 for me. Metallica has never been my absolute favourite band cause I'm not all that keen on Hetfield's voice. But I can look past that for the aggressive, energetic, chaotic powerhouse of an album this is. Favourite: One
You know an album is destiny when your brother talks about wanting to get into Metallica, you're about to recommend this album, and then you check and see what the album of the day is tomorrow and here it is. It's as if this list listens to us. But then there wouldn't be half the albums on here. Metallica is one of my favorite bands of all time and this album is the reason why. I would argue this is their best album in terms of length and quality (I even have a Funko Pop of Lady Justice!). I'd also accept their self titled black album, but this one came first and set the stage for their ability to go all out on that album. The sounds are crisp here, and Hetfield sounds better than ever on each of these tracks. The guitars are powerful and drums are loud and distinct. I think I call this one the best because you can actually hear everything (the singing, guitars, drums). This album, to me, harnesses all the anxiety that the group (and us) have about so many systems within this country. Opening with the dark, yet amped up Blackened, it seems like all is bleak and the world is ending, but you can't help but dance to the awesome guitar riffs and drums. From there we are taken to ...And Justice for All, a barefaced anthem about the unfairness of the justice system and how those with money tend to get away with everything. At almost ten minutes, this song flies by. Again, the drums and guitar really sell this one. I'm constantly air drumming this song. Eye of the Beholder is a lesser listened for me, but I will always love the opening guitar riff, this song has some lyrics like "Freedom of choice is made for you, freedom of speech is words they will bend, freedom with their exception" so another poke at the systems around us. I'd also say this song is underrated, even by me. Next is One, another masterpiece. The anti war song on the album. A soldier trying to live through injuries after the war is over but as we all know, so many people come home but never truly leave the battlefield. Reading the lyrics it's a really depressing song, but the instruments make you forget that a little bit. This is also a classic guitar hero song both on III and Metallica. The song ends with the soldier describing what this landmine did to him and how it "left him with life in hell". The Shortest Straw is an epic song, with an amazing guitar riff throughout and the solo is insane. This song was almost impossible to play on Guitar Hero. Talking about the shortest straw being pulled for you, life isn't fair, they are coming after you type stuff. Very on brand. I can't stress enough how amazing the drums and guitar are on this. Harvester of Sorrow is another, less political, but still dealing with that anger towards others that I think Shortest Straw deals with. This may be my least favorite on the album, but still good on a play through. The Frayed Ends of Sanity takes a bold swing with the Wizard of Oz "o we o" kicking off with the drums. Love that they are diving into someone just going insane, and not in a good way. "everyone's after me, frayed ends of sanity, hear them calling me". Also Hetfield's laughing towards the end is the cherry on top. To Live is to Die is a beautiful instrumental track that opens up very calmly before kicking into gear. I'll never say no to instrumental Metallica. Dyers Eve ends the album on a very strong note, starting with the kick off and moving into the descending drum beats that kick into a very fast gear rift reminiscent of Kill Em All. One of the few early songs with an F bomb too which I just found out today, no Parental advisory on this album! But I love the music when it hits the "Innocence, torn from me without your shelter" chorus. Excellent solo here too. Overall, this album is incredible, impeccable, and everything in between. A perfect primer for someone wanting to hear some metal music that hasn't before since it's like a Nu Metal type rock. It's pure art...and justice for all.
Justice eldist langbest af þessum metal-plötum sem ég hef fengið. Get enn hlustað á þetta, ólíkt Rust in Peace og Reign in Blood.
One of my absolute favorites. It takes me back to Boy Scout days, sitting behind the tent in summer camp listening to Metallica and Slayer and all these other metal albums and just being young and stupid and not caring about anything in the world.
Metallica hasn't disappoint so far. The guitar riffs are compelling.
Funkin nucts
Ahhhh fuck..... METALLICA HERE WE GOOOO!!!
Giant of giants
I’d give it six stars if I could
Just great !!
My city is a huge on metal & Metallica. Even though I didn't actively listen to them in the 80s, I knew their songs & they've always felt like home. As an adult, I've grown to greatly appreciate this band & have seen them live - what an electric show. One is a favorite, and the others are just sheer hard metal perfection. This is one of the few albums where I actually enjoy a 7 minute song. I'll have to revisit their other albums & take a trip down hometown memory lane.
My absolute favorite Metallica album.
Other than One, I'd not heard any of this before. It's great! Really great! Much more accessible than Master of Puppets but a little less radio-friendly than Metallica (the black album). Right in the sweet spot. Loved it.
\m/
Eye of the Beholder has a great riff.. at first. Then we get all these jarring changes. But it is a vehicle for Kirk to throw in a couple of good solos. Did I just hear the Winkies at the start of The Frayed Ends of Sanity? Dyers Eve is insane! I think my favourite is The Shortest Straw. But the whole album just smacks you down with all those crunchy riffs.
Mede door de solo's in dit album ben ik begonnen met gitaarspelen vroeger. Is misschien wel mijn favoriete album van Metallica.
Not quite as good as ‘Master Of Puppets’, but way better than the Black album. ‘…And Justice For All’ is the sound of a band pushing a sound and a formula as far as it will go, and stretching it to breaking point. Unsurprisingly, Metallica were never this complex again, their sound eventually devolving into something simpler, and blander: more country rock than heavy metal. But ‘…AJFO’ still stands as a last hurrah to their early, progressive thrash/metal years, both a bloated self-indulgent mess and a stunning tour-de-force.
Rating: 10/10
Classic thrash metal. Second best Metallica album and one of the greatest metal albums of all time. (Yes, this is the "One" album.)
This will forever be a classic and should be required listening for anyone getting into modern music.
ALBUM RATING: 4.7 ALBUM GRADE: A TRACK RATINGS: 1. Blackened - 5.0 2. …And Justice for All - 5.0 3. Eye of the Beholder - 4.5 4. One - 4.0 5. The Shortest Straw - 4.5 6. Harvester of Sorrow - 5.0 7. The Frayed Ends of Sanity - 5.0 8. To Live Is to Die - 5.0 9. Dyers Eve - 3.5
I had a "cool" friend in Webelos that got this record when it came out and it was honestly my first real introduction into thrash/metal and it blew my mind at the time (and still does, honestly). "One" was on heavy rotation. Probably Metallica at their most technical: there's a level of depth and complexity that doesn't take away from strong lyrical themes of corruption, war, etc. It's a shame because the follow up to this (and beyond) is a totally different band. Maybe this was as far as they could go with the genre so change was inevitable? The only knock on this record is the shitty, shitty mixing, with Newsted's bass nearly mixed out on some tracks.
More progressive (and longer) than previous albums. A gem.
It absolutely rocks
Gateway drug for metal.
Probably the best album ever in this genre. 5/5
One of my favorites and probably my favorite Metallica album. Heavy but with some great melodies and awesome solos.
Love this album.
A masterclass in heavy metal. Playing on the stylings inspired by the late Cliff Burton, Newstead’s first foray into a revitalised Metallica allows creativity that sling throwbacks to thrash metal and welcome an era of their greatest musical achievements.
One of my favorite Metallica albums, some of my favorite Metallica songs and riffs. I know this record gets a lot of hate for its mixing but I've always thought it gave the instruments this cold, detached feeling that mirrored the subject matter of the songs (war, injustice, etc). The guitar sections were long, technical, and robotic. Even the cover is this blank white stone imagery. All of it always felt intentional to me and elevated the themes of the record well. Still could use more bass though.
I don't really listen to 80's thrash metal....but MAN. The energy....the riffs....so much fun
Listened Before? Y Ah yes, another record from my favorite band of all time. This one is near flawless IMO. Pure magical speed metal with intelligent lyrics. Added to Library? It was already there Songs added to Playlist: Blackened, Dyer's Eve
Grande álbum do Metallica, adorei. Melhores músicas: One e To live is to Die
What an album! Yes there's the issue with the inaudible bass but it's Metallica at their most technical, on the cusp of world domination, when they were still pissed off. They were grieving for Cliff and they put this monster out. What I would give to be able to go back and see them on this tour.
Great metal album
Yeah, what they did to Jason is criminal. But this essentially a prog/thrash fusion album; that’s so far up my alley it may as well knock on my back door.
If for One alone. Nostalgia probably plays a factor for me.
Metal classic. One is a great song
This is a classic for me, it's not Metallica's best but still a solid album and it's the reason I learned guitar. One was the first tab I learned, starting with just the opening and eventually getting through all of the solos and the song front to back. Definitely would like to hear the version that still has the Bass track audible, but otherwise a big fan of this one and will give it 5 just for the personal impact it had on me.
Yep, exactly what I expected from one of the classic Metallica albums.
Fantastic album. Metallica rocks.
Great album 5/5
One of the greatest metal albums of all times!! the good times of metallica
Best
This is still in my running rotation and is probably still my favorite Metallica album due to the sheer artistry and ambition of every track. There's a lot of virtuosity here, great messages, and it holds together as a full album.
Klassiska One!
justiça e metal pra todos
A classic of the genre
Metallica grows on me...
I may be the only person on the planet that loves the production on this album and i'm not sorry. 5/5
Arguably the end of Metallica's thrash metal era, and what an end it is. Of Metallica's classic thrash metal trio (Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and ...And Justice), I'm inclined to say Master of Puppets is the best album, and yet, there's a certain 'maturity' to these songs that really demonstrates just how much the band had grown as songwriters and musicians since 'Ride the Lightning'. While my opinion might change from day-to-day, 'One' is probably my all-time favourite Metallica song and just one of the best songs I've ever heard. Never has a 7.5 minute song felt so short - the beautiful guitar work in the song's first half, the face-smashing heavy-ness of the song's latter portion, Hammet's legendary solo, the lyrics; it's all just so damn good. And yet, there's so much more to like on this album than just 'One'! Blackened, the title track, The Shortest Straw, Dyers Eve - these are brilliant songs, each of them on their own the sort of songwriting that the majority of musicians can ever hope to achieve, and Metallica has them all featured on one album. So yeah, 5 stars.
10/5. In 4th grade I had a mullet and an ....And Justice For All glow in the dark tee shirt; I rocked the shit out of that thing. This album complemented my panty dropping style.
Hell ya!
The essential metal album. Not exactly my type of metal but I cannot disrespect the greats
This album was my introduction to metal and I will always have a soft spot for it. Classic album even without the backstory.
listened a million times already
Grateful for being in a lifetime where this album exists
Awesome awesome album. I just miss the bass.
great high school throw back
Heavy, awesome, really enjoyed it
Metallica at their most technical, as lover of all things bassy I have to admit, the lack of bass is really felt in this album but ultimately it doesn't get in the way of some truly masterful songs
Metallica at their most progressive and arguably their most aggressive. From a musical perspective this is them at the top of their game; the compositions, time signatures, tempo changes and guitar harmonies are all next level and it's clear to see how the band thought they'd taken this approach to songwriting as far as they could with this album.
Horrible mix but doesn't stop this being an absolute monster.
Brilliant evolution of their sound - amongst their greatest
Still kicks fucking ass.
Bit heavy but enjoyed it
Great album, perfect start to this insanity! One (obviously) and Frayed Ends of Sanity were particular highlights
Мощь и риффы
I’ve never listened to this the whole way through. The hits are still as epic as ever and I found a lot of the in betweens to be really good examples of highly technical metal. I think Metallica will always have the crown for me of king. Not only did they help establish the genre, they did it with clean intentionally played music, not just noisy shredding. Every note has a purpose. This one isn’t my personal favorite of theirs but it’s inpossible to deny the influence and lasting quality. I’d do 9/10 if we were on that scale, but it will be a 5.
Great album - more "prog" than I remember, with shifting time signatures and elaborate arrangements. Dueling guitar harmonies are nice, but that chunky palm muted E is never far away.
reminds me of going to goodwill as a kid
This was the first tape I ever bought. Got it second hand from some shop in Kempsey, in about 1991. I'd heard a couple of the radio hits from the black album already, but nothing before that - I was 7 or so. When I first heard blackened I didn't even know how something so cool and heavy could exist. It legit blew my mind, it seemed next level in a way that nothing ever has since. The rest of the album really doesn't dip much in quality - I couldn't say shortest straw is something I ever get a hankering to hear on repeat, but even that as the album's lowest point is a fuckin' statement and a half. It's not my favourite Metallica album, but it's still the band at pretty much their peak, their live shows from this time are 110% by far as good as Metallica ever got, and I can't listen to it without just thinking about RIFFS and that brutally dry guitar tone for a good 20min afterwards. 5/5.
Incredible from start to finish.
One of their best. And they have had some great albums. This was the first one I bought from them. I have them all now, It is pretty great, start to finish.
Great stuff
Absolutely fantastic. The best album by Metallica in my opinion.
Best Metallica Album ever!
