Logical Progression

Album Summary

Logical Progression (also known as LTJ Bukem Presents Logical Progression) is a compilation album spearheaded by the English musician and label head LTJ Bukem, released in 1996. It includes tracks by Bukem and artists who recorded for his label, Good Looking Records, as well as his remixes. The compilation was a commercial success. (The New) Rolling Stone Album Guide called it "a landmark drum-and-bass album," and, along with Goldie's Timeless, "perhaps one of the two most important drum-and-bass releases of the decade.". The Independent deemed the album a "spring-heeled, summer's-coming drum'n'bass selection." AllMusic wrote that "the house influences and steady rhythms make Logical Progression perhaps the best introduction to jungle for those not used to hyper-speed breakbeats." MusicHound Rock: The Essential Album Guide noted that "Demon's Theme" is "considered a classic.".

IF YOU'RE READING THIS - THE REAL ALBUM IS HERE, NOT ON SPOTIFY: CD1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZK_0dgj43s CD2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYqDVqYSTxs Some songs have been removed from both due to copyright, but it's over an hour and a half long anyways so who cares. I finally got around to tracking down the ORIGINAL Logical Progression album, as the one on Spotify isn't even close to being the original. I listened to the Spotify version first, and I don't think a single song on there lines up, which obviously is going to skew the reviews on this site unfortunately. It's a real shame, because this is a really great album. It's hard to believe this came out in 1996, when breakbeat/jungle/DnB was really just an infant of a genre. This feels like it could have easily been mixed in the early 2000's and I'd have no idea. Issues with this album are few. I can definitely see why this is not everyone's flavour, especially since 95% of the slop on the 1001 Albums book is all English or American rock from the 70's-90's. However, if you're into electronic music, I'd bet that it would be easy to fall in love with this album. There is a few jumps and hiccups in the mix, but I'm going to put that down to a bad CD burn rather than issues with the album. There was definitely a few moments that I found repetitive, and it's not an extremely engaging album that you'd sit down and listen to intensely, but Liquid DnB has never been about that. This is album #93 for me, and it's pretty clear to me that this is by far the most underrated album on this list (so far). It's not perfect, but it certainly blew me away. In the context of the time, this deserves a 5, because it's utterly amazing how polished this is for such an old record using dated equipment. However, I'm rating this off personal taste, and because CD2 was a lot more of a slog, I think this is a well deserved 4.

Zero stars. Two hours of jingling keys. I wanna dunk this someone’s head in a toilet for putting this on the list. The only way I could see myself enjoying this is if I put it on while playing Super Monkey Ball. If you put on the soundtrack to Forsaken 64, it’s identical. No but seriously, drum n bass is fine but it’s a musical niche where if you love it you love it and then everyone else is left cold. Also, 2 hours?!? It’s wild that this is considered a sampling of talent, and it’s all identical. Just mind numbing stuff.

This is a fundamental drum-and-bass compilation featuring fast and syncopated rhythms, deep bass, and various synth pads, sound effects, samples etc. Electronic music is one of my weak areas but after listening to quite a few albums, I can hear how this album fits into to its overall history, especially in the mid 90s UK jungle/emergent drums-and-bass scene. Because this is a compilation album, it is very long, but I really enjoyed how atmospheric the album was despite its tight beats. It never feels claustrophobic or noisy.

I know you want to slip your fingers down your knickers as soon as you hear the first note, but please resist temptation and let this musical journey rape you into submission instead. What an outrageous record, that drips its gooey semen into your ears and sits back and watches as you struggle to shake it out. Your ears are brimming with cum and there's nothing you can do about it.

Kinda weird to have a compilation on here, but I guess it does sort of sum up a time and a place. This holds up quite well compared to alot of other electronic music of the era. It's moody, atmospheric, and unobtrusive - yet far from ambient. A nice balance. More like a landscape than a portrait. Plenty of space for your mind to wander inside these tracks.

Seeking out and listening to this album gave me another philosophical moment on this list. It wasn't on spotify, plus there's an entirely different version that I had to avoid in order to find the original on youtube. Moreover, I think it's the longest album I've gotten on this list so far (until I get 69 love songs). All of these factors made me question what the point of even finishing the album was. I wasn't enjoying it as a fully engaged listener, I can't add any songs--even if I did like one--to my playlist so I can revisit it, and it's too long and inaccessible to have the same quality as aphex twin where I can just use it as ambiance for a little bit; so what would I even get out of finishing the whole 2.5 hour runtime in the long run? This might just be rationalizing because I didn't like this album specifically because there are a couple good beats and ethereal sounds and the wiki explains a little cultural significance, but it did make me start to wonder about where the line is for an album to be totally worthless to me. However, this album got me to think these things which demonstrates that it has some unintentional worth I suppose. If I go any farther I'll start talking in circles so I'm just going to give it the 1 star and move on.

FYI: There is a very similar album on streaming also by LTJ with the same name. Doesn't help that this site uses the wrong cover art. The original compilation is much much better in my opinion. With that out of the way, this is definitely one of my favorite dnb releases of all time. Its atmospheric, groovy, and danceable all in one. If you like the peshay studio set you'll like this and vice versa.

It’s called jungle music, but the only thing I know close to it is house music. Really something I’d have to go out of my way to listen to, not my style. It’s like a Mario Kart selection screen that keeps building on itself. Listened to the version without vocals so I could choose individual songs for the playlist. I don’t hate it, but it is not what I would choose to listen to for an hour. Standouts: Above & Beyond, Music, and Jazz Lick

Über-classic and one of the goto mixes for Drum&Bass as it sounded in its mid-90s heyday. Bukem made the sounds of the clubscene accessible to a wide range of people who never set foot in any of the original clubs / never attended full-on d&b clubnights and helped elevate the genre (and the concept of dj mixes) to become dominant in the second half of the decade. Obviously it has by now lost most of its the-future-is-now shine but is still a solid set.

Honestly makes for great thinking music and music to work to. A little more hyperactive than the jazz or piano music I usually work to and maybe made it harder to focus, but that isn’t to say that the music is bad. Very, very good hyper instrumentals. It’s kind of like the fight music you’d hear in Marvel vs. Capcom or your average beat em up. Plus, the longer it goes, it becomes oddly soothing. I would say it’s a little too long at three hours but that’s perfect when you’re using it to think/work.

Yes it's a compilation, but it's head and shoulders above the other two big D and B albums of the mid-nineties, New Forms and Timeless. Rather than the 'biscuit tins falling down the stairs' vibe and shout-out MC's, this has ambient keyboard washes and jazzy rhythms. Incredibly influential, just listen to Demon's Theme, Music and Horizons which are three of his very best. His club mixes (the Mixmag one is great) are harder and my ears bled when I finally got to hear him dj last year. As many people have said on here, some of the best working music ever made. For me also, put this on when driving at night in the city and you have the perfect visuals and music. Even better if there's light rain.

I don't often go out of my way for drum n' bass, but when it finds me, I'm hooked. Highly recommend as a starting point for newbies, and the vocal mix helps as well. Also, the Spotify link is not the correct album (Logical Progession Level 1). The actual compilation is completely different. Just go find a link on Youtube instead. Copyright issues, I assume.

Cover looks like some kind of cool sci fi movie. Will this just turn out to be UK electronica? Course it will lol. Album isn't on Spotify so I listened to the *Journey Inwards* album instead, from 2000. Exactly as predicted. PlayStation soundtrack UK techno. 3/5 just because I couldn't hear the actual album.

I'm immensely grateful to the reviewer who pointed out that the Spotify link goes to the wrong, 3.5 hour long, album. So instead just had a couple hours of drum n bass through the day. Anyway. I remember when this was a thing. All the kids at uni who were really into it, and were running jungle club nights, were posh private school types. It was a big thing. I couldn't have given a f-. Listening now it's just like hearing a musical moment. You can see where it came from, what it led onto. Would be okay in a club, okay as background while you're getting something done. But on its own terms as an album? Sheesh.

First of all, this is just a two hour album. If you listened to something longer, I’m guessing you listened to Logical Progression LEVEL 1, which does not include the original on streaming. This is a bonus compilation that instead comes with two hourlong mixes of… this same bonus compilation but in one track for instrumentals, and one with vocals. Essentially, you listened to the same album three times and it wasn’t even the right one. The correct compilation can be found on Soundcloud or YouTube, and I personally listened to it on Soundcloud from an account called ‘DJ Jo Public,’ who has it split into two tracks. If two hours is still too much drum n bass for you, I highly recommend just listening to disc 2 (CD B). It’s the stronger half of the album but I loved this whole thing immensely as someone who’s dabbled in IDM, and I only ever first heard of it yesterday.

I recognised and even, maybe, fondly remembered this one when I saw the cover but my initial reaction was nevertheless to scoff at it as an 1001AYMHBYD - why are we doing compilations now? - but you know what? This is perfectly fine. I know that Roni Size/Reprazent and Goldie will come up eventually and I've had MJ Cole before but that seems to be it; another inclusion of circa *that* music is alright with me. And, that MJ Cole album illustrates a problem with a lot of dancefloor adjacent electronic music albums, even if they've been important: they're often too long for their own good and end up being a dud. So, this here, a seminal Best Of that particular slice of 90s music people should be aware of in a convenient package? Yeah. And I'm having a splendid time with it. One of the very few understandable Electronica inclusions so far after 426 albums. [...] Rating day. Imma give this a 5. ____________________________________ Since people still seem to listen to what's on Spotify (-_-), here's a version on Youtube that features both CDs, split into tracks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7sIUXSrVoU

I cannot strees how important it is that you seek out the actual 1996 release - NOT the one that is on the streaming platforms. The original, the one that is in the 1001 list, captures the sound of jungle as it morphs into the drum and bass sounds that hit the mainstream. There's a rawness and creative energy to this era of music that was kind of sepcial. And incredibly worthy of the 5 stars I'm giving it. The version on the platfomrs is much cleaner, sanitised version of the sound. That is just a bit boring.

I've noticed the list is light on this kind of electronic compilation album, probably because there aren't many albums like this that have broken into the mainstream. This one is decent enough, although I think the vocal mix is stronger than the instrumentals in the version on Spotify. It looks like this isn't the original album, though, for reasons I don't understand. After listening to that version, it seems even better.

It’s a faff to reconstruct the album (spread over 5 separate YouTubes: CD1, CD2, and three missing tracks). Going back to individual tracks (or even identifying them) is also a faff. And it’s got a 2 hours playing time… What a great album, though. All killer, no filler, difficult to single out favourite tracks, but Pharoah/Rings Around Saturn towards the end of CD2 stood out for me.

This is OK as an ambiance, but its need to be included on this list is debatable and polarizing because of the inherent conflict between active and passive listening. There's no way anyone should or realistically could give this album their full attention for two hours. So, it's then, by necessity, relegated to mere background music. And that's too bad because there's good stuff here - just not much you'll be able to hold onto with a single listen - and it's far too long for multiple playthroughs when you've literally got 1,000 other albums competing for your time. Not sure how to score this. I enjoyed it, but its core characteristics make its being on this list seem flawed - which, I suppose, really isn't its fault but the fault of the challenge designers. Bottom line: if I bought this, I wouldn't regret the decision. And while I wouldn't likely listen to it from start to finish very often, I'd also not be upset if a few tracks made it into the greater shuffle.

This is a tricky one to rate. I guess the Spotify version isn’t the original album, and you have to find it in YouTube. I did not have time in the day to listen to both of these albums, so I took a small sample size of both. The version on YouTube is significantly better, and was a great vibe. I will go back and listen to this in full. It set a pace, and I was enjoying the world. I kept thinking it would be a good soundtrack for Buffy and Faith to listen to while slaying vampires, and clubbing all night. You know the episode. Listening to the Spotify after, I felt underwhelmed. It seemed so muted compared to what the original version is. Since it is believed the original version is the YouTube one I’m going to give this an optimistic score, even if I haven’t listened to the full album yet.

My jaw dropped when I saw this pop up on my screen! For some reason, I didn't know this was on the list. LTJ Bukem has seen some newish success thanks to the advent of jungle officially being cool again, and the stellar album covers of his two "Producer" projects. Im so happy an album with a continuous mix gets a feature - I really hope people enjoy that format as much as I do. I'm also so glad that the jungle side of DnB tempo music gets some love. I have no specific song highlights for this comp. It's just excellent music to coerce you into a zone, or be a backing track for any activity that requires focus. The repetitive breaks are so hypnotic when paired with the atmospheric synth pads that just fade in and out so easily. I especially love when a sub bass kicks in just for a little bit, it pairs so well with the frenetic drum patterns. Any other little sounds are vocal treats, like the occasional vocal loop in "Reflections". I love this music - it speaks to my soul and encapsulates so many feelings/experiences that go beyond words. Whether its the liminal early parts of "Above & Beyond" with its classic Amen break sample, or the more fluttery, layered "Senses"; this project brings to light such a cool sonic niche in the context of this overall list. If any of this music raised your eyebrow, then I think jungle and early DnB culture is such a worthwhile wikipedia deep dive. Learning about break sampling, the advent of the MC and the DnB jargon is super fun. I'd be lying if I gave Logical Progression a perfect 5, though part of me wants too. There's a bit of variation missing, even if that isn't the point. There's a few dinky cuts that go too long without being additive or subtractive in their sampling/instrumentation. But outside of those few nitpicks? Beautiful stuff. Soothing, hypnotic, and cutting-edge. Big ups selecta a STRONG 4/5 from me rudeboy

Interesting to see some DNB on this list. LTJ Bukem is a fine pick to represent the genre, saw them play House of Blues Chicago in the late 1990s, met a woman there from Madison Wisconsin who knew the Onion people AND ALSO (I realized later) LOOKED JUST LIKE the young woman featured for years in the Onion's American Voices person-on-the-street column. Exactly the kind of music that I've been listening to lately and interested in making for the past few years. This was a really cool compilation record and I'm flying through the album. The one thing that I think could be improved with this genre is that I think there's an obvious expectation that people will be listening to this in some kind of edm club (not your typical rave, but a more chill sort of club I think?), and so there are really long sections where the music doesn't evolve enough aside from changes in the drum break patterns. Part of what makes this sound great is its meditative-like nature (I won't say trance because it's not quite that) so I don't mean for that to be removed, but I do find that this is a genre I enjoy more as a "lean-in" experience, where there are more defined structures and things borrowed from pop music as opposed to this repetitive "lean back" idea. Overall, this was really great. Thoroughly enjoyed.

I like this kind of music, but I did listen to the Youtube version which might be different.

Was ready to give it a 3, skip though a few songs and then move on. Something hooked me and decided now on my send listen through its moved up to a 4. No doubt after may repeats it would (will) be a 5

interesting range - I much preferred the instrumentals, but the rushing percussion and dynamic arrangements were a refreshing listen

Like it, very good gateway for me quick and electronic music. Like the slight jungle, house and dnb tones.

I'm ngl, the type of flow I got into while journalling to this album was insane. DnB jungle beat pioneers.
