Def a twee quality that's aged poorly but overall a fun art pop album. I'd give it 3.5 but I can see why the pitchfork crowd swooned over it back in the day. The band is pretty sick, some wild polyrhythms and harmonies
1-Star Albums (10)
All Ratings
3/5 Competent straight forward jazz
Fun disco
A classic, maybe a little overrated?
A flawed masterpiece
Some bangers with some filler
The music is pretty fun but it's very 70s hipsters with Bela Lugosi singing
Yeehaw 4.5
Fun 60s British invasion rock n' roll. 3.5
The gift is murder
A couple absolute bangers and a tiny bit of filler. 4.75
Classic electric blues sound
4.5
"golden years" and "wild is the wind" are bangers but most of this album feels like a warm up for the Berlin trilogy. 3.5
Grunge classic. Bit repetitive and too long
Not their best album but still a classic
Def a twee quality that's aged poorly but overall a fun art pop album. I'd give it 3.5 but I can see why the pitchfork crowd swooned over it back in the day. The band is pretty sick, some wild polyrhythms and harmonies
Few bangers, too much filler
I've always bounced off country, so I was hoping this album would help me appreciate it more. It was ok but nothing stood out to me.
I can see this being influential for it's time but parts sound dated to my ears. McLaren is also insufferable. 2.5
Zzzz
An influential album that sounds pretty tame to modern ears. A few bangers that have aged well.
Lots of bangers with a bitta filler
Like if Zap Branigan made an album
Dated but not in a bad way. Bit too long at parts.
3.75
Bit too far afield for me.
Some fun percussion arrangements but the gushing from critics really baffles me.
Modern, maximalist classic
3.5 rounded up
Masterpiece
2.5 rounded up. A couple standouts but mostly meh crooners.
This is what pink floyd sounds like to people who don't like pink floyd
This album has a lot of bloat, but I can't help find this indulgent 70s maximalism endearing. Just a couple of guys being dudes.
3.5 rounded up
Can be used to fight zombies.
4.20/5
I didn't hate it. 2.5
Some of the ambitious compositions work, other times it's not so successful. For that I'd give it a 3 but there's a couple tracks that are trying to be funny that have aged terribly. Too bad it didn't all sound like video game music

I enjoyed this a lot more than I would've expected. A bit too long and bloated at times nonetheless.
Fun album with a couple bangers but too long 3.5
3.5 will probably get higher on repeated listens
3.5
Bit long tho innit

Possibly too adult contemporary for some but if you can't at least appreciate the musicianship on display here then you might have ADD.
People describing this as "lager rock" as if that's a bad thing
Can't say I loved it but it was fun and am glad it's on the list
Great sounding production, and a cool blend of electro and R&B with a nice voice, but there were no hooks--just vibes.
I enjoyed the raw production but the vocals and lyrics were tedious. Maybe this hit different in its time, but it hasn't aged well to my ears.
Someone said this sounded like Mario Kart as if that's a bad thing.
Possibly the greatest one-two punch to start an album.
I actually enjoyed the radio friendly tracks. The kinda album best enjoyed at low volume while driving. Way too long tho and the deep cuts aren't rewarding. If it were ten mins shorter I'd give it three stars. As for its inclusion on this list, I can tell you as someone who lived through this period of pop music, David Gray, particularly "Babylon," was ubiquitous. It's an accurate snapshot of its era. For better or worse.
The singles are fun but this album is 1h17m long??
I really like the title track and "Vincent," but had never listened to the full album, so I was actually pretty excited. Unfortunately, the filler tracks are too saccharine for my taste.
The opening track is a jam, and there's scattered tasty 90s moments, but too much of this bloated album sounds dated
This is definitely not for me. Very over the top cabaret. But the singer is strong with sophisticated arrangements and great production, so I'm glad it exists and def belongs on this list.
Few bangers. Disappointed by how top heavy it is
I liked the production and arrangements but too much of the album sounded unremarkable
3.5 rounded up to correct the low global average. Would've benefitted from more direction but it's like being part of a fun jam session with some very talented friends.
People seem to get confused about why albums like this are included in "1001 albums you must hear" because it's kinda mid. But I think it deserves to be included because, as a millennial, I can tell you these guys and bands like them were ubiquitous. This album is a great snapshot of the era, warts and all.
This album was like a breath of fresh air when it was released. Nu metal has aged better than anyone could've imagined but at the time it felt very four. While on the other spectrum of rock music was too cool for school garage rock like the strokes. So it was very refreshing for a band like the darkness come in with some levity. That being said this album is pretty top heavy. 3.5 rounded up.
Some of you dorks need to lighten up
One of the stronger late 90s Britpop efforts to remake "The Bends."
