LTJ Bukem
2/5
It’s called jungle music, but the only thing I know close to it is house music. Really something I’d have to go out of my way to listen to, not my style. It’s like a Mario Kart selection screen that keeps building on itself. Listened to the version without vocals so I could choose individual songs for the playlist. I don’t hate it, but it is not what I would choose to listen to for an hour. Standouts: Above & Beyond, Music, and Jazz Lick

I was going into this expecting to have a 5, I think I set myself up for disappointment. This is an amazing album, the first half being my favorites. After the half way point, however, I became less interested and impressed. A bit too similar in the later half. Standouts: Where The Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, With Or Without You, Bullet The Blue Sky, and Red Hill Mining Town.

Fatboy Slim

Funky hip hop instrumentals. Very bouncy. They’re nice, and this album is not bad at all, it’s just not my kinda music. Standouts: The Rockafeller Skank and Praise You.

Metallica
5/5
Great album. Would have been cool to hear it for the first time like when it was released. Don’t have time to write. Standouts: Master Of Puppets, The Thing That Should Not Be, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Disposable Heroes, and Leper Messiah.

Morrissey
3/5
I love The Smiths and Morrissey’s singing and lyricism on those records. I cannot say the same for this solo project. It’s a far cry from what I loved from before. His sound is distinct from The Smiths, and is not one that I enjoy nearly as much. Morrissey is Morrissey, so if you disagree with what he says, you’ll simply dislike the song. He’s kinda like Kanye in that sense, unabashedly himself, which I do like. I disliked the opening song about America. Seems lowbrow, especially now after a black president. Sometimes the production on this album gets electronic and kinda strange. It can sometimes take you out of the experience. Standouts: Come Back to Camden, The World is Full of Crashing Bores, First of the Gang to Die, and Let Me Kiss You.

Nirvana
5/5
First time listen as an album. Amazing. The grime of it stands out still today. I think I’ve heard every song hear at some point because of how prevalent it is in pop culture. A bit of leitmotif throughout. Only one mid song, On A Plain. Standouts: Lithium, Polly, and Endless, Nameless. Final track is a real gut punch.
Justice
5/5
Not the biggest fan of electronic music. I think songs and albums of the genre need to be engaging, bring something unique to the table, and need the sound to build to something. This album does a solid job. I remember listening to some of the songs as a kid. “Opera-disco” with a lot of personality. Apparently has 100s of micro samples. Songs transition into one another, leitmotif of D.A.N.C.E. used throughout. I want to say that I dislike parts of the album because it’s electronic, but honestly I was impressed by how engaged it kept me throughout the runtime. One song I didn’t care for as much was Newjack, but even that song ends strongly. Standouts: Let There Be Light, D.A.N.C.E., Phantom, Valentine, Waters of Nazareth. I would give it a 4.25/5 right now, but I think it can only go up. Very enjoyable to finally listen to the whole album.
Dire Straits
4/5
I’ve only heard Sultans of Swing before listening to this album. Very laid back rock that discussed topics like lost love, longing, and ostracism. Plucky strings litter the songs, adds a nice texture to the smooth background. Really liked the second half of the album. Standouts: Water of Love, Six Blade Knife, In the Gallery, Wild West End, Lions. Solid album, but nothing that really surprised me.
B.B. King
5/5
I don’t know enough history about jazz around this time to give a full appreciation to what B.B. King and the band had performed here. Amazing jazz and blues. Not a dull moment, and man, what a voice on that man. The recording itself is quality as well. Puts you right in a dimly lit theater with dressed tables watching the lit stage. Standouts: Sweet Little Angel, How Blue Can You Get?, Worry, Worry, Woke Up This Mornin’, and You Done Lost Your Good Thing Now.
Johnny Cash
4/5
Never listened to an entire Johnny Cash album. It’s great. My only complaint is that a lot of songs sound too similar to differentiate. The ones that sound the most distinct had a backup vocalist or had a cool story like in I Hung My Head. The covers are great, didn’t think I needed a We’ll Meet Again cover by Cash. There are too many songs that were standouts, but here are a few; Standouts: Hurt, Give My Love to Rose, Bridge Over Troubled Water, I Hung My Head, In My Life, and Danny Boy.
Carole King
3/5
This album is fine. I didn’t like the opening track, I Feel The Earth Move. My least favorite part of the album was the super plucky piano. It made some of the songs feel like a hickory dickery nursery rhyme or something out of a Disney soundtrack. Wasn’t sold on her storytelling. The songs feel upbeat and peppy, but kind of a chore to listen to near the end. The songs following the first were some of the best of the whole experience.Standouts: So Far Away, It’s Too Late, and Way Over Yonder.
Pearl Jam
5/5
First time listening to an album by Pearl Jam. I had always thought they were a hair band from the 70s. Great album. Not too much to say though. It’s some psych rock with good storytelling. At points, mesmerizing. Release is a really great closer to the album. It’s difficult to remember what the songs I thought were okay even sounded like, though. Standouts: Once, Even Flow, Black, Jeremy, Garden.
Machito
5/5
Lost my notes. Wow, what an album. Texture is rich and bright throughout the entire album. Not a dull moment. The bongos or whatever drums are used drive each song forward. Standouts: Wild Jungle, Congo Mulence, Holiday, Conversation, andTin Tin Deo.
D'Angelo
3/5
Not a big fan of 90s R&B that sounds like moaning, but I’ve gotta admit, the vibes are great. He has an angelic voice, and I’m sure if I wasn’t a guy and born in the right era, I’d melt. Did have me bobbing my head for a good bit of it. Standouts: Alright, When We Get By, Higher.
Common
4/5
Early 2000s rap. Produced by Kanye, which is a huge plus. The sampling is great, not a lot of chipmunk vocals either. Common has a great voice and great lyricism. Some songs have transitions between them. Great album experience, some of the best of this era. Standouts: Be (Intro), Faithful, Love is…, The Food - Live, and They Say.
Beatles
3/5
Gave it a shot. I dislike the Beatles. I know they’re pioneering and all of that, but I don’t like the music. I think they’re annoying. Don’t really like what they stood for either. That being said, there were some cool moments on the record, like the texture of some songs. Yellow Submarine has a lot of background sounds and people talking to give imagery to the song. Other songs I don’t understand, like She Said She Said. Did not like a couple of songs. Standouts: Eleanor Rigby, I’m Only Sleeping, For No One.
LTJ Bukem

It’s like a Mario Kart selection screen that keeps building on itself. Listened to the version without vocals so I could choose individual songs for the playlist. I don’t hate it, but it is not what I would choose to listen to for an hour. Standouts: Above & Beyond, Music, and Jazz Lick
Nas
4/5
This was an album I had wanted to listen to for some time. Easy to see why this is one of the most influential and beloved rap albums of all time. Nas has some of the best word play and lyricism of any rapper I’ve heard. The instrumentals in the background range from pleasant to emphatic. The album does a great job at putting you in its stories. Only song I thought was okay was Life’s a Bitch, granted I’ve heard it many times sampled elsewhere. The only issues I have with the album are that I can’t relate to it, but man does it put on a groove. What an amazing few closing tracks. Standouts: N.Y. State of Mind, Halftime, One Time 4 Your Mind, Represent, It Ain’t Hard to Tell.
Fats Domino
4/5
Short, sweet, simple. Best kind of music from this era. I prefer some other music from the 40s, 50s, early 60s that is similar, but I do like these songs. This collection of songs was only 18 minutes long, so it’s hard to hate or really love anything here — not that I would have hated it. I had known of Blueberry Hill and Blue Monday beforehand. Standouts: Blueberry Hill, What’s the Reason I’m Not Pleasing You, Blue Monday, Goin’ Home.
Billie Holiday
4/5
Billie Holiday is great. Beautiful voice supported by a beautiful orchestra. Good crooner music. Can sometimes be boring because all of the songs sound so similar, but they’re all so tender and close-hearted. Standouts: For Heaven’s Sake, For All We Know, It’s Easy to Remember, But Beautiful, I’m a Fool to Love You.
PJ Harvey
4/5
I had no expectations for this album, and I had never heard of the artist before. Got blown out of the water, parts of the album are right up my alley. Not quite sure of the genre, it’s grimey, folky, and high-strung. Very, very strong start with a great ending. The middle gets a bit same-y. She has good lyricism, and isn’t afraid to do unorthodox and initially offputting music. Works out for the better. Like in Legs where the guitars sound like wailing cries of agony or in Rub ‘Til It Bleeds where the drum hits give imagery of bludgeoning something. Definitely an album I’ll return to. Standouts: Rid of Me, Missed, Legs, Rub ‘Til It Bleeds, Ecstacy.
The Who
4/5
Really cool rock story album following a deaf, dumb, blind kid named Tommy. Sound is similar to Jesus Christ Superstar. He’s first bullied and outcasted, then treated like a saint for his ability to play pinball. Cool leitmotif throughout the album. One thing I found really interesting was that there was an overture and an “Underture”. Underture is about 10 mins long, but I didn’t mind. I didn’t quite get the album for the first 6 songs, but then Christmas came on, and I started to understand what the album was. The last 8 or so tracks of the album do not standout, but they do wrap up the story nicely. Standouts: Amazing Journey, Eyesight to the Blind (The Hawker), Christmas, Cousin Kevin, Pinball Wizard, and Go to the Mirror!
Kraftwerk
3/5
Melodic electronic music that sounds like a train. I like the idea, and I kinda got it at the end of the album after I looked up some of the history for it, but I didn’t quite understand what the album was supposed to be based on on its own. There’s not a lot of substance to it, and the repetitious lyrics are grating. My favorite song was the one without lyrics that had a beautiful melody, Franz Schubert. Endless, Endless is a nice end to the album though. I will say, I would like to return to this album to get a better picture of it— it’s intriguing— but not a great first impression. Standouts: The Hall of Mirrors, Abzug, Franz Schubert.
The Cramps
2/5
Halloween themed rock with Elvis screamo in there. This album was not quite up my alley. It was hard for me to be invested in it because of how difficult it is to hear the singer for a lot of the songs. Definitely a garage sound, which I can commend, but still wasn’t quite what I like. Fever is a cool closer track. A very defined first album for the band. Standouts: I Was A Teenage Werewolf, Zombie Dance, Tear It Up.
TLC
3/5
90s R&B, but without the moaning, except for a skit. Made me uncomfortable. Not my style, but the vibes are good. There is a sort of story throughout, strung together with the interludes and such. Some songs really embrace the 90s funk and sampling. The finale has a really cool blown out guitar. I liked it a little more than the D’Angelo album I had listened to. Standouts: Kick Your Game, Waterfalls, Let’s Do It Again, Sumthin’ Wicked This Way Comes.
Bob Dylan
4/5
First time listening to a Bob Dylan album. Pretty good. He has great storytelling, but I have a difficult time remembering a lot of what was said throughout the whole listening. About half of the songs were just okay, which I think is the problem for me with folk albums. Some of it is thought provoking, however. Great first half of the album. Good closer too. Standouts: Blowin’ in the Wind, Girl from the North Country, Masters of War, A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall, and Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright.
Kanye West
5/5
First album on here that I have listened to prior. My favorite artist. I don’t need to write anything, so I won’t. Except, that it’s not my favorite Kanye album. Standouts: All Falls Down, Spaceship, Jesus Walks, Slow Jamz, Through the Wire, and Family Business.
Elvis Presley
4/5
Not too much to say. The album is a positive, fun experience. Elvis has an iconic voice which makes the songs feel special. I’m Counting on You was my favorite. Very tender delivery. Standouts: Blue Suede Shoes, I’m Counting on You, I Love You Because, I’ll Never Let You Go (Little Darling), and Blue Moon - Take 9/M.
4/5
I was going into this expecting to have a 5, I think I set myself up for disappointment. This is an amazing album, the first half being my favorites. After the half way point, however, I became less interested and impressed. A bit too similar in the later half. Standouts: Where The Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, With Or Without You, Bullet The Blue Sky, and Red Hill Mining Town.
Iron Butterfly
4/5
Forgot to write about the album. Not too much to say, though. It was a good psych rock experience. The final song is easily the best. Noticed that it sampled the “God rest ye merry gentlemen” song or hymn. Kept you engaged for a lot of it. Doesn’t overstay its welcome either. Standouts: My Mirage, Termination, and In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida
ZZ Top
3/5
The album was good but very similar. Not as much Spanish guitar or motifs as I was hoping for. If there was more variety, it would be better. I had known La Grange before this, good song. Standouts: Master of Sparks, Move Me on Down the Line, and La Grange.
Peter Tosh
3/5
Peter Tosh was a part of The Wailers, which is cool. Did not like the opening track Legalize It. Different era, and I don’t like weed. Political song that I didn’t align with I suppose, but sonically it’s not the best on the album either. The middle of the album and the last track were easily the best because he talked about more than marijuana. His writing on Igzibeher was pretty good. Last track was good as well. Standouts: No Sympathy, Igziabeher, and Brand New Second Hand.
Elvis Presley
4/5
Really great collection of songs. Production is great, filled with strings, brass, etc. Really makes Elvis’s voice pop in these songs. Delivery is great, background vocalists are a nice touch as well. The worst songs are just good. Some songs are similar, but a majority of the tracks are distinct and memorable. Standouts: Only the Strong Survive, I’ll Hold You In My Heart, Gentle On My Mind, Suspicious Minds, Don’t Cry Daddy, Mama Liked the Roses.
1/5
This album would be okay if all lyrics were taken out. What a dogshit name and album cover. Have never liked how the vocalist sings. This whole album was unpleasant to listen to and needlessly crass and angry. I will admit that there are glimpses of things I like about it, namely some of the instrumentals, but there is not much I did like. There are no standouts.
G. Love & Special Sauce
2/5
This album was weird. Not what I had expected from the album art at all. Indie minimal rap folk something. The guy’s voice is not that good. Rough and tumble I guess. Not my thing, but it did get better in the middle. Standouts: Baby’s Got Sauce, Fatman, and This Ain’t Living.
Harry Nilsson
3/5
I didn’t get the album at the start. My first impressions were that it was a satire and parody album, but then there were some actual songs that came off as genuine. I think the album is trying to be tongue in cheek and genuine at points, which is cool and unique. Granted, it’s at the cost that some songs are just bad. Standouts: The Moonbeam Song, Without You, Jump into the Fire, and I’ll Never Leave You.
Suede
5/5
Really surprised and impressed by this album. The sound is right up my alley, every song was good, and some were great. I wish I had paid more attention to it, but the vibe was perfect. Standouts: So Young, Animal Nitrate, She’s Not Dead, Sleeping Pills, Breakdown, and Where the Pigs Don’t Fly.
Sister Sledge
3/5
Classic disco music. Did not listen to the four remixes at the end of the album, I had gotten the picture. But, the experience was good. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It’s a bit repetitive, go figure. Standouts: He’s the Greatest Dancer, Thinking of You, You’re a Friend to Me, and One More Time.
Alice In Chains
4/5
Big name that I’ve heard of. Thought I might like it, and I did. Though, the album didn’t click for me until Down In A Hole. At times the album seems a bit middling, but the great stuff is where it’s at. Whole album feels “Dirt”-y. There’s a layer of that sound over every song, which gives a lot of character to the project. Standouts: Down In A Hole, Rooster, Hate To Feel, Angry Chair, and Would?
Johnny Cash
3/5
Average Johnny Cash performance with a cool twist because it was performed at the jail itself for the inmates. Standouts: Starkville City Jail, San Quentin (Reprise), and Folsom Prison Blues.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
2/5
Indian music. I mean, you can tell that it’s quality, but I can’t really say much about it. Album is super long, and I cannot understand what’s being said. It is good, but it’s nothing I’ll come back to or understand. Awesome album cover though. Standouts: Yeh Jo Halka Saroor Hae, and Haq Ali Ali Haq.
Beastie Boys
4/5
80s white rap? Kinda? This doesn’t seem like music I should enjoy, but I did. The voices should sound annoying, but they never bothered me. To be honest, the whole album sounded like one song, but it kept me engaged the whole time. I can’t quite pinpoint what made it so much more enjoyable than Limp Bizkit. The layering is really interesting and diverse. Very fun album. I don’t know what the B-Boy Bouillabaisse are supposed to be though.— After finishing the album, they’re short raps over cool beats— Standouts: Johnny Ryall, High Plains Drifter, 3-Minute Rule, Hey Ladies, What Comes Around, and Shadrach.
Jurassic 5
4/5
Really interesting and cool album. I wasn’t too particular to the lyrics, but the instrumentals are really great and engaging. When I did catch some of the lyrics they were good. The only negative thing I can say about the album is I wish that the lyrics captivated me as much as the background, and that it does unfortunately fall into some corny/ weird 90s rapping. Standouts: Freedom, Break, What’s Golden, Sum of Us, I Am Somebody, and Acetate Prophets.
Joni Mitchell
4/5
Oh my goodness I love Joni Mitchell’s voice. She sings so tenderly. This is a great album. The music is a mixture of folk, electronic, and jazz. A really cool mixture. Unfortunately, the last couple songs are just okay, which will not make this a 5. But man, the songs that are standouts are some of the best I’ve heard from this book. Standouts: In France They Kiss on Main Street, Edith and the Kingpin, Shades of Scarlett Conquering, The Hissing of Summer Lawns, and The Boho Dance.
The Birthday Party
1/5
Didn’t like it. I probably don’t like punk music from what I’ve heard so far. Standouts: Hamlet (Pow Pow Pow) and Several Sins.
Morrissey
Louis Prima
5/5
The cream of the crop. Amazing track list, amazing time listening to it. Nothing out of place, just beautiful and fun music. Light, meaningful, endearing. Standouts: Just A Gigalo/I Ain’t Got Nobody, Body and Soul, Oh, Marie, Basin Street Blues/When It’s Sleepy Time…, and Buona Sera.
Pixies
4/5
Really fun, whining, wailing album. Not supposed to be taken too seriously and has a great vibe to it. Half of the songs aren’t really anything but a bunch of nonsense, but it’s a fun listen. There’s a reason why Where Is My Mind? is still circling its way through the internet still. Standouts: Bone Machine, Something Against You, Gigantic, River Euphrates, Where Is My Mind?, and Brick Is Red.
Cornershop
1/5
This album is a hodgepodge of everything. There’s Indian music sampled and used in a lot of songs, Spanish lyrics, other weird lyrics. One song is just an ambient vapor wave type of song. Each song is different and there are quite a few interludes with kinda bizarre references. I don’t think you’re supposed to be able to pinpoint a single theme or message out of the album, but my issue with it is that it doesn’t do so in an overtly intriguing way. The way sounds are thrown together are to their detriment, but not in an egregious way. A very confusing listen, not quite a fan. Tried to listen to it later. Damn this thing is ass. Standouts: Brimful of Asha and Candyman.
David Bowie
4/5
Very mystical project. Half of it is basically all instrumental. Sounds like a movie soundtrack if they were trying to make electronic music sound orchestral. I liked it, and I feel like another listen would give me more appreciation for the album. I can’t say whether or not I wanted more of Bowie’s singing on it, as I feel the album succeeds at what it set out to do. Standouts: Sound and Vision, Always Crashing in the Same Car, A New Career in Town, and Subterraneans.
Radiohead
5/5
First time listening to a whole Radiohead album. I started listening to the album accidentally on shuffle, so I was thinking that there were some weird pacing issues with it. Glad I caught it. This album is ethereal. To put it simply, everything’s in its right place. Standouts: Everything In Its Right Place, Kid A, How to Disappear Completely, Treefingers, Optimistic, Idioteque, and Motion Picture Soundtrack.
John Prine
4/5
Good folk album. A witty, some tunes funny, tongue in cheek critique of war, love, grief and the new age. Vibe similar to the Nilsson Schmilsson album. Was impressed by his lyricism and how real some of the songs felt. Standouts: Hello in There, San Stone, Paradise, Pretty Good, Donald and Lydia.
Siouxsie And The Banshees
4/5
Indie rock with a Middle Eastern twist? Only four unique songs with a fifth 12” version of the opening track which switches it up halfway through. Cool little album. I liked the sound of the singer. She has a nice inflection. All of the songs were good, nothing overstays its welcome either. At some points there were really interesting instrumentals. Standouts: Spellbound, Arabian Knights, and Monitor.
The Beach Boys
5/5
The Beatles wish they could be The Beach Boys. Good, fun, delicate collection of songs. A wonderful, tender listen. Standouts: Wouldn’t It Be Nice, Don’t Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder), I’m Waiting For The Day, Let’s Go Away For Awhile, Here Today, I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times, and Pet Sounds.
5/5
What a cool and bizarre album. Backgrounds are a lot of spacey synth type of sounds which go well with Bowie’s lyrics. I did enjoy it more than Low, which I also really liked. Only two songs I didn’t really care for, but an amazing package overall. So great that it pains me to dislike anything here because the standouts really are great. Standouts: Five Years, Soul Love, Moonage Daydream, Starman, It Ain’t Easy, Ziggy Stardust, Rock ‘N’ Roll Suicide.
George Michael
3/5
George Michael has a great voice, but this album is only okay. After listening, I have no desire to return to this album. None of the songs really impressed me and the lyrics are serviceable. The ending was nice, though. Only three tracks had good music backing up lyrics. Those are the standouts: They Won’t Go When I Go, Cowboys and Angels, and Soul Free.
Cream
3/5
Didn’t pay too much attention to the album. I found a lot of the songs on the album sounded similar, a little to similar to parse through. It was a fine listen, and I did enjoy it. Always love Sunshine of Your Love. Standouts: Sunshine of Your Love, World of Pain, Dance The Night Away, and We’re Going Wrong.
Buena Vista Social Club
4/5
Beautiful album. I imagine myself sitting in New Mexico enjoying a nice hot afternoon. Everything’s in Spanish, so I have to base it off of is vibes, which are amazing. Sounds a little bit like Toy Story too. Kinda funny that way. Standouts: El Cuarto De Tula, Tu Que Has Hacho?, Veinte Anos, El Carratero, Candela, and Murmullo.
50 Cent
3/5
What a bloated album. I liked what I had heard before, like In Da Club and Many Men, but a majority of what I haven’t heard is for good reason. It’s not necessarily bad, but it’s not much worth having here. About 17-18 tracks with one remix is a lot for the run time of 75 mins. I think it’s funny listening back to 00’s and 90’s rap and thinking what they had was hard when it sounds like a bunch of metrosexual shit. Time can be a cruel mistress. Standouts: Patiently Waiting, Many Men (Wish Death), In Da Club, P.I.M.P., and 21 Questions.
Elvis Costello
2/5
Elvis Costello proves that he can sing well with some of the songs here, but for others, he sings like he’s singing Stacy’s Mom. His voice can be very annoying this way, yet he sometimes has good songs. This album was pretty long for me, and I tuned out pretty quick. First song was grating. I was brought back in when the instrumentals were good or he sang well. Never heard him before, don’t want to hear more of him. Maybe I just didn’t understand what he was trying to sing about, especially on songs like My Science Fiction Twin or 20% Amnesia. Standouts: You Tripped At Every Step, Sulky Girl, and Favourite Hour.
Miles Davis
5/5
Some of the best jazz, still. There’s nothing quite like Miles Davis. I love his music and I love this album. Such a tender, sweet, and snappy collection. Standouts: Blue in Green and Flamenco Sketches.
The Only Ones
3/5
Didn’t pay too much attention to the album. The sound is fun and a bit weird, using strange lyrics and guitar licks. Kinda sounded like indie rock, especially with the lead singer’s whiny voice. Doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is a plus, but then again I also didn’t take listening to it seriously neither. An okay album. Standouts: Another Girl, Another Planet, The Beast, It’s The Truth, and Lovers of Today.
Dead Kennedys
3/5
First punk album that I’ve gotten that doesn’t make bad music. The lyrics are some of the most questionable and maybe evil, but I think the music was a lot of fun to listen to. There is a song called I Kill Children. I thought of it more as a tongue in cheek kinda thing. Critiques of warfare and maybe capitalism. It was difficult to catch everything said. California one was the best on the album. Standouts: Kill the Poor, Chemical Warfare, California Uber Allies, and Funland at the Beach.
Lynyrd Skynyrd
4/5
Great album. Love the big hitters here but I was not as in love with the ones I hadn’t heard before. The big three (Tuesday’s Gone, Simple Man, and Free Bird) just clear the rest of them by a mile. The length of the album is perfect. Doesn’t overstay its welcome, covers a good variety of subjects such as love, uncertainty, youth, and change. Standouts: Tuesday’s Gone, Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, Poison Whiskey, and Free Bird.
James Brown
3/5
Forgot to write earlier. Good live jazz, albeit a bit short. One song is worth 1/3 of the run time, and it was just okay. Wasn’t the most creative jazz performance I’ve listened to. Standouts: Try Me, I Don’t Mind, and Medley: Please Please Please/You’ve Got The Power/I Found Someone.
Circle Jerks
3/5
Surprisingly fun throwaway album. Can’t tell what is really being said. The songs are so short that the whole thing feels like nothing. Probably the point. Lots of anger? I caught criticism of the Vietnam war in Paid Vacation, that’s about it. Standouts: Behind the Door, Paid Vacation, and Live Fast Die Young.
Steely Dan
5/5
Man I love Steely Dan. What a wonderful, colorful and fun album. Pleasantly surprised by the lyrics and the plucky and funky guitars riffs. Paints a beautiful picture. Even the quieter moments like on East St. Louis Toodle-Oo where there are no lyrics, the instrumentals put you right there. Standouts: Rikki Don’t Lose That Number, Night By Night, Barrytown, Through With Buzz, Pretzel Logic, and Charlie Freak.
Arcade Fire
3/5
A decent album with some good songs. I like the overall vibe, clearly inspired a lot of music from the indie revival around this time. Dramatic post apocalyptic suburbs I guess? I found it hard to like the delivery on some songs. Like on Sprawl 1 I like how desolate it sounds, and then for 2 I don’t care for how the female vocalist sings with all of the fluttery instrumentals. Album feels a little bloated. Standouts: The Suburbs, Modern Man, Suburban War, Wasted Hours, and Deep Blue.
The Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy
3/5
Interesting lyrical rap about politics, violence, and hatred for yourself and others. Not the best to listen to sonically. Now, what was said on the album has been said many times, but I’ll assume for its time it was revolutionary. Maybe that‘a the wrong term for it. An okay listen. Standouts: Television The Drug Of The Nation, Language Of Violence, and Financial Leprosy.
Jacques Brel
3/5
A live performance of French songs. The singer has a very powerful voice. I understood nothing of it, and fell out of it by the end. Standouts: Amsterdam and Tango funebre
Willie Nelson
4/5
Beautiful, melancholic, tender country with a simple and loving background. Discussed a lot of views of love and longing for another person, time, or place. There is a shimmer of hope that is constant on the album, an endearing touch. Really impressed by this album, and it resonated with me. Standouts: Stardust, Georgia On My Mind, Blue Skies, September Song, Moonlight In Vermont, and Someone to Watch Over Me.
Elbow
4/5
A diverse album with a lot of range. The singer’s voice is light, coarse, and emotive. Every track is distinct, the only issue is that some sound like Disney movie soundtracks. I want to like the song Grounds for Divorce, but the chorus sounds like butt rock and it makes me cringe. Listened to the album all of the way through twice, and I don’t think that it has the greatest replay value. All in all, a good album. Standouts: Starlings, An Audience With The Pope, Some Riot, One Day Like This, and Friend Of Ours.
Lightning Bolt
3/5
Did not know what to expect from an album like this one. I did enjoy it overall, though it’s not quite my cup of tea. Electronic metal? Not boring, and some songs do have melodies to grab onto through the noise. Lyrics might be there somewhere but cannot be parsed. Album cover is cool. Standouts: Assassins, Dracula Mountain, 2 Towers, and Crown of Storms.
Dolly Parton
4/5
Good country album. Beautiful voices on these three. Never heard a song by Dollie Parton before. I now see why she still tours at 80 years old. First half of the album was great, the middle was a bit boring, and the ending was lovely. Standouts: To Know Him Is to Love Him, Hobo’s Meditation, Wildflowers, Rosewood Casket, and Farther Along.
Supergrass
3/5
Brit pop rock album? Sound was okay, but I wasn’t the biggest fan. Had heard the song Alright before. I do think that the songs I liked were quite good, but the rest I could leave. There was one song that was made a higher pitch so it sounded like kids. Thought it was gonna be annoying but ended up being alright. Ending was cute Standouts: Caught By the Fuzz, Alright, She’s So Loose, and Sofa Of My Lethargy.
The Kinks
4/5
Forgot to write. Overall fun collection of songs. I don’t know if I had ever heard of a song from The Kinks prior. Standouts: Session Man, Most Exclusive Residence for Sale, Sunny Afternoon, Dead End Street, Big Black Smoke, and Mr. Pleasant.
Girls Against Boys
3/5
A fun grungy rock album. Could not tell what much of the lyrics were, but the music was good. Wasn’t very impressed by anything, just a solid sound. Standouts: Go Be Delighted, Learned It, and Bullet Proof Cupid.
Ramones
4/5
Never listened to an album by the Ramones. I played a lot of Blitzkrieg Bop on Guitar Hero when I was young. A really fun punk rock album. The second half of the album is a lot better than the first half. Kinda felt like going through the motions. Not much to take away but a good listening experience. Standouts: Blitzkrieg Bop, I Don’t Wanna Go Down to the Basement, Havana Affair, Let’s Dance, and Today Your Love, Tomorrow the World.
Soft Cell
4/5
A pretty cool debut album. 80s techno music. When I heard the opening track, I was afraid that this was going to be a very long, annoying album. Good news— it’s just long. Sex Dwarf was weird. Where Did Our Love Go reuses the instrumental to Tainted Love, kinda cool. I want to say that the album is bloated, but it’s bloated in the same way that Tommy by The Who is bloated—the songs that aren’t as interesting or are longer add to the atmosphere of the album. Their value comes from rounding out the entire catalog. Granted, that album is better and tells a narrative. Standouts: Tainted Love, Entertain Me, Chips On My Shoulder, Say Hello, Wave Goodbye, Where Did Our Love Go?, Torch, and So.
Depeche Mode
4/5
I was distracting myself and didn’t want to enjoy this album as much as I did. I wanted to come up with an excuse for why it wasn’t as good as I found. It’s an interesting album with a slow start. Personal Jesus I heard before on the Johnny Cash album I had listened to, so it was cool to see where the song started. The middle of it is great, and I think that Clean is an appropriate and fun closer. Snuck its way into a 4/5 for me. Cool album cover too. Standouts: World In My Eyes, Halo, Waiting for the Night, Enjoy the Silence, Policy of Truth, and Clean.
Siouxsie And The Banshees
4/5
Forgot to write. Listened to it twice. A fun album with a lot of yelling. Standouts: Jigsaw Feeling, Overground, Mirage, Switch, Hong Kong Garden, and The Staircase (Mystery).
Guns N' Roses
3/5
I didn’t enjoy the rest of the album like I enjoy certain songs from my childhood. I played some of these on Guitar Hero and had a lot of fun with them then. I don’t like the moaning. Standouts: Welcome To The Jungle, Mr. Brownstone, Paradise City, Sweet Child O’ Mine.
Curtis Mayfield
5/5
Funky, vibrant and fun album. Diverse and touching jazz that had me bobbing my head. Never heard of the movie, but this soundtrack is amazing. Standouts: Little Child Runnin’ Wild, Freddie’s Dead, Give Me Your Love, Eddie You Should Know Better, and Think - Instrumental.
The Damned
4/5
Didn’t write yesterday. A punk rock album that had some nice melodies to the songs. Had a fun time listening to it. Standouts: Machine Gun Etiquette, Melody Lee, Plan 9 Channel 7, Noise, Noise, Noise, and Looking At You.
The Rolling Stones
3/5
I like The Rolling Stones but had never listened to an entire album by them. I thought this one was okay. I only knew the last song, which was my favorite. Overall, the album left something to be desired. Hope other albums will be more enjoyable. Standouts: Gimme Shelter, Love In Vain, and You Can’t Always Get What You Want.
Solange
3/5
Artistic, minimal, atmospheric R&B that tells a narrative about being black. Like it said in one of the songs, this is not for me. I did appreciate the use of interludes throughout the record. They were frequent, after most songs, and helped create a line through the whole thing. Solange does have a very nice, tender voice. As I listened I felt like I had wanted more on the instrumental front, maybe it felt a bit too barren. This album is quality but did not appeal to me. Standouts: Cranes in the Sky, Max, Don’t You Wait, and Don’t Wish Me We’ll.
Suede
5/5
Man I love these guys. They make music that just gets me the right way. I’m so glad that I was able to listen to their first two albums in order. This album has what I loved about the first: an interesting set of instrumentals which isn’t afraid to be twangy, sporadic, and kind of whimsical, along with a bunch of just fun songs. I’m this album they get more cinematic with some orchestral backings to the lyrics in the second half of the album. Don’t know who the lead singer is, but I love his vocal inflection. My standouts are most of the songs here because I can’t decide which to throw out: Heroine, The Wild Ones, The Power, New Generation, The 2 Of Us, The Asphalt World, Stay Together, and Whipsade.
John Martyn
3/5
Blues and folk music. Mixed feelings about the album. I really liked some of the songs here, but the other half I could leave. In the opening track it’s difficult to hear what John Martyn is saying. The live version of I’d Rather Be The Devil changes to be more psych rock. The Easy Blues is annoying to listen to until the ending where it changes into an electronic sound that was an interesting contrast. Album cover is really cool. Standouts: Over The Hill, Don’t Want To Know, May You Never, and The Man In The Station.
Oasis
3/5
Mixed feelings about this album. Half of songs come off as annoying, uninspired, and weirdly phoned in even though it’s their first album. Probably just not my vibe, which is okay. The songs that survive this feel like their run time is too long. Slide Away could have been 4 minutes instead of 6.5 and gotten the same effect. Standouts: Live Forever, Supersonic, Slide Away, and Married With Children.
Faith No More
2/5
I did not enjoy this album. It was silly in an annoying way. Like a bunch of failed Red Hot Chili Peppers songs. The blending of metal with other genres did a disservice to the songs. They’re jacks of no trades, masters of none. It was intriguing to hear how every song was ruined. Standouts: The Real Thing and Woodpecker From Mars.
The Human League
4/5
Fun completely midi/electronic album. Was not too keen on it for the first half, but I did enjoy the second a lot more. When I heard the final song it all clicked, because I never knew who sang it, but it’s a great one. Standouts: The Things That Dreams Are Made Of, Do Or Die, Seconds, Love Action, and Don’t You Want Me.
Pretenders
4/5
Great (post) punk rock album. Lead singer has a good range. Diverse instrumentals. Got better as the album went along. Didn’t pay too much attention to the lyrics, they seemed fine. Standouts: Space Invader, Stop Your Sobbing, Kid, Brass In Pocket, and Mystery Achievement.
The Cure
3/5
A drab, moody concept album. Maybe concept album isn’t the right thing to call it. Mainly instrumentals, which are good, but some songs that have lyrics like in Secrets are at a whisper level so it’s difficult to make anything out. I thought I liked The Cure, but I only knew of their top hits. This album was nothing like I assumed it would be. I enjoyed this album, but definitely wished had more substance to grab onto. Just hung onto the vibe. Standouts: Play For Today, M, and Seventeen Seconds.
4/5
Are we not men?
We are DEVO!
Fun, quirky album. Good time all around. Standouts: Uncontrollable Urge, Praying Hands, Jocko Homo, and Gut Feeling/(Slap Your Mammy).
Fleet Foxes
4/5
New age folk kind of album. The vocal harmonies on here are great. I would like to see them do background vocals for other artists if they haven’t already. White Winter Hymnal is a cool song. Cool to see a recent song get sung alongside your normal Christmas songs and hymns. Standouts: White Winter Hymnal, Ragged Wood, Quiet Houses, He Doesn’t Know Why, and Blue Ridge Mountains.
Air
4/5
Funky, electronic, jazzy album. Very vibrant and distinct. Did not know what I was in for when I saw the first song had a French title. Daft Punk-esq. The album was fun to listen to. Standouts: La femme d’argent, Sexy Boy, Remember, You Make It Easy, New Star In The Sky, and Le voyage de Penelope.
Public Image Ltd.
1/5
Baby’s first criticism of religion and society. Not a fun or interesting listen. Innovative for the time, sure, but it was not that good. I get the idea that it’s trying to say, but when the music is dogshit, it gets held back. It’s not even that it’s unlistenable, more that it was insulting because it felt low brow. No standouts.
Traffic
4/5
Wasn’t sold on the album until the song No Time To Live. A fun album that covers some topics not so often covered in the late 60s. The lead singer has some good chops too. Album is a bit long but solid. Standouts: Who Knows What Tomorrow May Bring, Feelin’ Alright, 40.000 Headman, Cryin’ To Be Heard, No Time To Live, and Shanghai Noodle Factory.
Sarah Vaughan
3/5
Solid live jazz performance. Sarah Vaughan has a wonderful voice. Nothing too crazy but it was pleasant to listen to. Some funny interjections from her because she doesn’t know the lyrics or something happens with the band. Standouts: Willow Weep For Me, Be Anything But Darling Be Mine, and Thou Swell.
The Pogues
4/5
Irish pub shanty type of music. Not normally a fan of this stuff, just not for me. I did have fun with this album, though. And some of the songs I could relate to and see the vision of, like the last one of returning back from war to see the horrors of surviving. Standouts: The Sick Bed of Chuchulainn, A Pair of Brown Eyes, Billy’s Bones, The Gentleman Soldier, and The Band Played Waltzing Matilda.
The Band
4/5
A cool earlier rock folk kind of album. There’s a lot of fun to be had. Did not get sold until the middle of the album, but I found my listen to be endearing. Thought the storytelling was pretty good too. Looking at it now as I’m writing this before bed, however, I don’t remember what I had listened to without going back to the songs. Standouts: The Weight, We Can Talk, Long Black Veil, Chest Fever, Lonesome Suzie, and I Shall Be Released.
Dire Straits
5/5
A really cool, sometimes mysterious, joyous, vibrant, and reserved album. This was what I had wanted out of hearing their first album back near the beginning of when I had started this. Sometimes the guitar just sounds like crying, it’s so beautiful. I had heard Money For Nothing before and I had always made fun of it. Like, “Why are they bragging about microwaves?” But giving the song some context and some breathing room to show a wider picture with the rest of the album makes it such a fun time. This album made me a fan of these guys. Standouts: Money For Nothing, Walk Of Life, Your Latest Trick, Why Worry?, The Man’s Too Strong, and Brothers In Arms.
Led Zeppelin
4/5
Forgot to write yesterday. Cool album, a good time to be had. I was impressed to learn that Led Zeppelin 1-4 all came out one year after the other. Looking forward to more. Standouts: Whole Lotta Love, What Is and What Should Never Be, Thank You, and Ramble On.
XTC
3/5
A funky blend of genres like jazz, pop, rock, and electronic music with an overall good sound. The album felt a bit too similar though, or maybe it’s that the middle of the album lost me, as did the end. The concept was good. The main singer is good but his lyrics never really grabbed me and were corny at times. The corniness got to me on the song Dying. Standouts: The Meeting Place, That’s Really Super, Supergirl, Mermaid Smiled, and The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul.
Snoop Dogg
3/5
Never listened to a Snoop Dogg album. Clear to see why he’s been a huge inspiration. Gangster rap is not a genre I’m fond of, but I appreciated the smaller things like the interludes and skits. He first song I had heard from this was Ain’t No Fun from a Filthy Frank edit on YouTube that I ended up using to made a similar edit video of my friend in high school. Standouts: Gin and Juice, Serial Killa, Who Am I (What’s My Name)?, and Ain’t No Fun (If The Homies Can’t Have None).
David Bowie
3/5
More of a psych rock kind of vibe from this David Bowie album. It’s good, but did not quite have the same magic as the other two I have listened to. An unfair comparison, sure. Heard some of the Kraftwerk inspiration, especially the opening track. Standouts: Station to Station, Word on a Wing, Stay, and Wild Is the Wind.
Deep Purple
4/5
Never listened to a Deep Purple album. Of course I knew Smoke On the Water, but this was a pleasant listen. Good live performance, would have been cool to see in person. My favorite part of the album was the back and forth between the singer and the guitar player on Strange Kind of Woman. Songs like Space Truckin’ make me realize that old heads that make fun of music for being just noise don’t have any excuse. Sometimes noise sounds amazing. Standouts: Child in Time, Smoke on the Water, Strange Kind of Woman, and Space Truckin’.
Michael Jackson
5/5
The perfect pop album. Never listened to the whole thing. Everything that has been said has certainly been well deserved. Heard Thriller too many times, but it’s for good reason. Standouts: Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’, Baby Be Mine, The Girl Is Mine, Beat It, Billie Jean, Human Nature, and P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing).
Queens of the Stone Age
4/5
Was not into it until The Bronze, then I turned around. Turned out to be a really fun, messy, wacky rock album. Some cool ideas like in Spiders and Vinegaroons where they take the concept and blow it to the wall with strange and eerie guitar riffs and scuttling legs with the drumsticks. I think I could go without the first few songs to get to the meat and potatoes quicker. Standouts: If Only, The Bronze (Bonus Track), How to Handle a Rope ( A Lesson in the Lariat), Mexicola, You Can’t Quit Me Baby, Give the Mule What He Wants, and Spiders and Vinegaroons.
The Velvet Underground
2/5
I really like this album for what it has done and how bold it was for its time. Listening to it is another matter. The idea is cool. A lot of the songs don’t sell me on what they try to do, and if they do it’s often muddled with other things that are just unpleasant to listen to. Like in The Black Angel’s Death Song there’s just an air compressor-like sound blasted into the microphone, and often the instrumentation is purposefully uncanny, offbeat, and ebbs and flows out of time. This is not an album I had fun listening to, and I don’t want to listen to it again. It’s clear to see why it has been so influential. You can clearly hear what certain genres take from it and make them enjoyable to listen to. Standouts: Femme Fatale, Heroin, and I’ll Be Your Mirror.
Ash
2/5
This album likes to skirt the line between punk rock, cutesy pop, and metal/industrial music, and it’s to its detriment. If a song has cool instrumentals, it’ll be accompanied by cutesy “she likes me, she likes me not” type of lyrics. The good parts of the album were when it stayed in its lane and didn’t ruin it with lyrics. It felt mind numbing. Oh Yeah, Kung Fu, and Girl From Mars especially. Some bad songs had cool sounds, but it never redeemed them. Standouts: Goldfinger and Innocent Smile.
Green Day
3/5
This is a quality album, but I was not feeling it today. Maybe the sound isn’t for me anymore. I loved listening to some of the songs as a kid, and those are still good. Kinda funny to hear the singer ask, “Am I retarded?” Yeah, kinda. Standouts: Jesus of Suburbia, Holiday / Boulevard of Broken Dreams, and Wake Me Up When September Ends.
The Who
3/5
This album is fine, nothing wrong with it. Not impressed by anything, but it was nice to listen to. Cool to listen to the debut album. Standouts: I Don’t Mind, La-La-La-Lies, and It’s Not True.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
3/5
Tarkus is a very long track that has a lot of moving parts. It was a fun listen. Did not catch all I had wanted to catch. The rest of the album was alright. Standouts: Tarkus and A Time And A Place.
Sabu
3/5
Latin music album. It was fine, just not my style. I enjoyed a couple of songs. Standouts: El Cumbanchero and Choferito-Plena,
Stereolab
4/5
A hodge podge of genres, mainly electronic, with French lyrics. The vibes were good and the album was very unique. Sometimes the sound felt like it was underwater. Standouts: Cybele’s Reverie, Percolator, Emperor Tomato Ketchup, Monstre Sacre, and Slow Fast Hazel.
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
4/5
Beautiful and charming jazz. A more low key kind of jazz too. I recognized Take Five and Kathy’s Waltz. Standouts: Strange Meadow Lark, Take Five, Kathy’s Waltz, and Pick up Sticks.
Metallica
4/5
First time listening to a whole Metallica album. Really fun, got my adrenaline going at points. I like the points where the dip between playing intense and then pulling back the curtains to something more beautiful, and vice versa. Songs like One and To Live Is To Die do this very well. Glad I got to listen to it. Standouts: Blackened, One, The Shortest Straw, Harvester Of Sorrow, and To Live Is To Die.
The Beach Boys
4/5
When I saw the cover I didn’t think this was supposed to be an album by The Beach Boys. It was strange and intriguing to hear a more macabre and bleak sound from them. At times it feels desolate and their voices layer like a choir. Made me feel a bit uncomfortable that way. There’s a chunk of politics in this album, which steer it in a direction that was unexpected. Overall, good album, The Beach Boys have a great sound, yet I wanted them to dip their feet more into it. Didn’t feel quite sold on it. Standouts: Don’t Go Near The Water, Long Promised Road, Disney Girls, ‘Til I Die, and Surf’s Up.
Fatboy Slim
3/5
Funky hip hop instrumentals. Very bouncy. They’re nice, and this album is not bad at all, it’s just not my kinda music. Standouts: The Rockafeller Skank and Praise You.
Eagles
5/5
Great variety of fun and interesting tracks on this album. It’s touching, sweet, sometimes distant and longing, and vibrant. I had heard some of the songs before, but the new ones were also great. Nothing’s out of place here and it felt well rounded. Standouts: Hotel California, New Kid in Town, Life in the Fast Lane, Wasted Time, Victim of Love, and Try and Love Again.
Emmylou Harris
3/5
Put off listening to this because I didn’t want to listen to country. This was a very pleasant and album. Didn’t pay too much attention to the lyrics but what I did catch was refreshing to hear apposed to what I normally hear from the genre. That said, not quite my cup of tea. Standouts: Michelangelo, My Baby Needs A Shepherd, J’ai fait tout, and Boy From Tupelo.
Van Morrison
3/5
Folk/rock music with a mix of strings and flute included. Hits a certain solo summer night campfire kind of vibe. Except for the song The Way Young Lovers Do which is a lot more jazzy, which was unexpected. By the end of the album I was kinda over it though. A bit too much of the same for the whole run time. When you’re in the mood for this, I’m sure it’s just what you need, but it was not hitting for me. Standouts: Beside You and Sweet Thing.
Run-D.M.C.
4/5
A fun, bumping hip hop album. Had a good time listening to this one. Clear to see where the Beastie Boys get their sound from. The last couple songs weren’t my favorites, but the album had a strong first half. Standouts: It’s Tricky, Walk This Way (feat. Aerosmith), Is It Live, Hit It Run, and Raising Hell.
Beth Orton
4/5
Had a good time listening to this album. It’s solemn, heartfelt, and touching. Love her voice. Kind of reminded me of Animal Crossing music with the vibe. Quieter music. Standouts: Stolen Car, Couldn’t Cause Me Harm, Pass in Time, Central Reservation -Original Version, Stars All Seem to Weep, and Blood Red River.
Michael Jackson
5/5
Love that I got to listen to this a week or two after Thriller. I think that Thriller is a more concise experience, but MJ is the king of pop for a clear reason. I’ve heard the song Bad too many times to enjoy it, but the rest of what’s offered here is still great. This album has a bit more variety compared to Thriller. Great album. Standouts: The Way You Make Me Feel, Speed Demon, Another Part of Me, Man in the Mirror, Dirty Diana, Smooth Criminal, and Leave Me Alone.
Buddy Holly & The Crickets
4/5
Great collection of songs. Love some Buddy Holly. Some of the best of the 50s. Standouts: Oh Boy!, Maybe Baby, That’ll Be The Day, An Empty Cup(And a Broken Date), and Send Me Some Lovin’.
Ali Farka Touré
2/5
African music. Sounded fine for what it was. Just couldn’t appreciate it. Standouts: Soukora and Diaraby.
Paul Weller
4/5
A consistently fun and groovy rock album. Had some themes of love, idealism, religion. Good quality of songs throughout the project. The variety of instruments throughout the album helped make the songs distinct. Did feel a little long and the middle of the album I was more indifferent toward. Cut out that middle and I think you have an amazing album. Standouts: Sunflower, Can You Heal Us (Holy Man), Wild Wood, Foot Of The Mountain, Shadow Of The Sun, and Moon On Your Pyjamas.
Randy Newman
2/5
A satirical album covering topics like Southern pride, racism, labor, alcoholism and corporations. The music was fine but the lyrics were mixed. That’s the point of the satire, I get it. Definitely good satire. Wasn’t in the mood for this kind of album. I don’t listen to albums for satire, normally. Standouts: Kingfish and Rollin’.
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
Energizing, fun, and sometimes somber album. Don’t think I’ve heard many songs from Bruce Springsteen, so it was cool to hear some. Standouts: Something in the Night, Racing in the Street, Factory, Streets of Fire, Prove It All Night, and Darkness On the Edge of Town.
Meat Loaf
4/5
Good rock album that’s very upbeat and energetic. Wasn’t crazy for it, but I do think it was a good listen. Thought the songs were a bit longer than I would have liked. All of this I wrote before hearing the final song of the album, and holy shit what a bombastic and moving ending. Really one of the greatest last songs of an album I’ve heard in quite a while. Standouts: Bat Out of Hell, You Took The Words Right Out of My Mouth, Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad, and For Crying Out Loud.
Love
4/5
First song I’ve heard from Love was Everybody’s Gotta Live from the Jojo Rabbit movie. I love that song so it was cool to listen to some more from this band. Reminds me of modern indie songs. Good listen, with a good vibe. Standouts: Alone Again Or, A House Is Not A Motel, Andmoreagain, Maybe The People Would Be The Times Or Between Clark and Hilldale, and You Set The Scene.
Solomon Burke
4/5
Good collection of songs about love. Solomon Burke and his vocalists have great voices, and the music is a fun time. Very solid. Standouts: If You Need Me, Can’t Nobody Love You, Someone to Love Me, Won’t You Give Him (One More Chance), and You Can’t Love ‘Em All.
a-ha
4/5
This album feels like a fun, fleeting moment. Just a glimpse in time. The songs are good to great, and it was cool to hear more from the band. Take on Me is the best still, but I was really impressed by The Sun Always Shines on T.V. Cool soundscape used throughout the album. Standouts: Take on Me, Living a Boy’s Adventure Tale, The Sun Always Shines on T.V., And You Tell Me, Love Is Reason, and Here I Stand and Face the Rain.
Mariah Carey
2/5
This album was not for me. Mariah Carey has an amazing voice, but I don’t care for 90s R&B. Nothing here got me past that. It is a quality album, though. Standouts: The Roof(Back In Time) and Fourth of July.
The Go-Go's
3/5
A fun but one-note pop album. I knew two of the songs, which are good. The rest of the album is fine. Automatic was a nice change of sound for the album. Standouts: Our Lips Are Sealed, How Much More, and Automatic.
Pulp
4/5
Theatrical album, dramatic. Interesting and varied songs about class struggles, lust, finding meaning in the mundane, and lost opportunities. Great listen. Black Country, New Road meets David Bowie. Stays lighter and more tongue in cheek. Standouts: Common People, Disco 2000, Something Changed, F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E., Underwear, and Monday Morning.
Duke Ellington
4/5
Great jazz album. Didn’t listen to the one on Spotify because it was 2 hours long, so I looked up the album on YouTube. About 45 mins or so. Had fun listening to it. I won’t be adding any standouts to this album because I don’t know which is which.
ABBA
3/5
Vacation style of music. Something you feel like you caught a second of as you’re walking down the street. Love Dancing Queen, but the rest of the album was just alright. Standouts: Dancing Queen, My Love, My Life, and Tiger.
Sigur Rós
5/5
This album is awesome. I have heard one of the songs off of the album before. An ambient kinda rock album that doesn’t stay quiet. At times it’s quite loud with the limited instrumentals used. The lyrics are all in Icelandic, so I got none of it, but the vibes are amazing. Sometimes you’re soaring above the clouds, sometimes you’re digging your heels into the dirt. Completely unique product. Standouts: Svefn-g-englar, Staralfur, Ny batteri, Hjartao hamast, Olsen Olsen, and Avalon.
Kings of Leon
3/5
Mixed feelings on this album. Punk rock kinda vibe. The singer has a voice that’s coarse and often annoying with an uneven delivery. A bit off putting. The music is good. There’s a bunch of songs that were alright, but the singer ruins the vibe for me. The standouts were songs where both the music and singing meet well for me. Cailfornia Waiting is an awesome song. Standouts: Trani, California Waiting, Spiral Staircase, and Talihina Sky.
Brian Eno
4/5
Does not feel like a 70s album. Experimental, atmospheric music that has a few songs with lyrics. The lyrics are overall okay, but I was really impressed by the way they used synths to make you feel like you’re rolling over waves. The songs are shorter, and I enjoyed most of them. Standouts: Over Fire Island, St Elmo’s Fire, The Big Ship, Another Green World, Sombre Reptiles, Becalmed, and Spirits Drifting.
George Michael
3/5
Another okay album by George Michael. Don’t really vibe with it. I Want Your Sex part one brings down part two, which is better. Don’t really care for the Garage Band kind of sounds used throughout the album. His singing isn’t as good as in Listen Without Prejudice, but the songs are a bit better. Standouts: One More Try, Kissing a Fool, A Last Request (I Want Your Sex).
Pixies
4/5
A fun, reckless, short experience. In and out, no time wasted. Pixies are good for a quick hit. That’s my main issue with the album, that it feels like a fleeting moment. Wish it felt more substantial, but that’s not what the Pixies do from what I’ve heard of them. Standouts: Debaser, Here Comes Your Man, Mr. Grieves, La La Love You, No 13 Baby, There Goes My Gun, Hey, and Gouge Away.
The Cardigans
4/5
I saw that Step On Me was on this album, which I liked, so I was excited to listen. This album reminds me of more modern cutesy bedroom pop that is around now. I thought, “Man, this really sounds like that one TikTok song from a couple of years ago!” and then it played Lovefool. There was also a scat version of Iron Man here, which I enjoyed. This album was ahead of its time. Sounds new (which the 90s weren’t THAT long ago, but still), like it came out a couple of years ago. Great listen. Standouts: Your New Cuckoo, Heartbreaker, Step On Me, Lovefool, Iron Man, and Choke.
Joan Armatrading
3/5
I really liked Joan Armatrading’s beautiful voice. Full delivery and great vibrato. Quality product. The album wasn’t quite for me. Half of the songs were just okay, and does not feel like something I’d come back to. Standouts: Down To Zero, Save Me, Somebody Who Loves You, and Tall In The Saddle.
Bob Dylan
4/5
Gotta be in the mood to have your ears talked off to enjoy Bob Dylan. Today, I did. Over half of the songs were just okay, but I appreciated the standouts. I don’t think I liked this album more than The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, but it still has its charm and reason to be sung. You get to hear how he strains notes at the end of his sentences in every song. Standouts: One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later), I Want You, Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues, Fourth Time Around, and Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands.
Faust
4/5
Ambient German psych rock. Enjoyed the album. First song was like 15 minutes long without lyrics. Gotta be in it for the long haul. Some cool instrumentation throughout, but the main selling point is the vibe. Standouts: Krautrock, The Sad Skinhead, Jennifer, and Lauft…Heisst Das Ed Lauft Oder Es Kommt Bald..Lauft.
Pulp
4/5
Some more male manipulator music by Pulp. Similar vibe to the previous album, but this one has themes of pornography and its emotions. I liked the album overall. I viewed it as more of a conceptual thing, and I didn’t hear as much of the lyrics. Didn’t need the almost 10 minutes of synth on the last song. Cut that down to like 2 and you have a good song with a cool ending. Standouts: The Fear, Help The Aged, This Is Hardcore, I’m A Man, and Sylvia.
The Band
4/5
Forgot to write. More of what I liked from the previous album I had listened to. Gets me in an upbeat mood. Whispering Pines was my favorite. Standouts: Across The Great Divide, When You Awake, Whispering Pines, Look Out Cleveland, and The Unfaithful Servant.
Prince
3/5
This is a long ass album. Not necessarily long in a bloated way. Thought it was okay, not my kind of music. There’s some variety in there. I had checked out after 40 minutes. Standouts: Housequake, The Ballad of Dorothy Parker, If I Was Your Girlfriend, and Strange Relationship.
Coldcut
3/5
Had to listen to the album on YouTube, probably because of copyright issues. A funky and groovy electronic album. Used a lot of samples and sounds, cut and mixed. Just goes for a fun vibe. Not impressed by anything here, but it was not a bad listen. Catches the sound it goes for from the jump.
Paul Simon
2/5
Not a bad album, but not one that I was interested in. Some African stuff in there which sounded cool. Not keen to why this is historical. I liked the one song I knew, which was You Can Call Me Al. Can’t put a pin in why this didn’t mesh with me. Standouts: Gumboots and You Can Call Me Al.
Beatles
4/5
Still not a Beatles guy, but I did like this album more than the other one I listened to. Still difficult to get past the corniness, don’t care how much of a legacy these guys have. I was able to appreciate more of it, though. The first time I’d heard In My Life it was with that Johnny Cash album where he did a cover. I’ll give the Beatles their proper due for that one. Great song. Standouts: You Won’t See Me, Nowhere Man, Michelle, In My Life, and Wait.
Pavement
4/5
I know Harness Your Hopes from these guys, but that’s it. Good album. Liked the whiny delivery, but the lyrics were hit or miss at times. Standouts: Elevate Me Later, Stop Breathin, Gold Soundz, Range Life, and Fillmore Jive.
Britney Spears
3/5
Holy key change. This is one of the few pure pop albums I’ve gotten on this. Not for me. One note album about love. I caught at least 4 songs that had a key change. Music dips between teeny bop ballad and muted synths and drum hits. Do not want to listen to this again. Did enjoy that final song though. Standouts: …Baby One More Time, (You Drive Me) Crazy, I Will Still Love You, and Autumn Goodbye.
Queen
4/5
Bombastic and fun rock. Haven’t heard a whole album by Queen before. Good listen and helped lighten my mood today. Freddie Mercury has pipes. Some songs were just okay, or lacked something special. Which don’t come off as quiet parts in the album as much as they do as low(er) points. Standouts: Death On Two Legs, You’re My Best Friend, The Prophet’s Song, Good Company, and Bohemian Rhapsody.
Bon Jovi
5/5
The worst part about listening to this album is that I couldn’t listen to it with fresh ears. Too many iconic rock anthems. Electrifying music. Certainly an album to listen to before you die. Standouts: You Give Love A Bad Name, Livin’ On A Prayer, Wanted Dead Or Alive, Raise Your Hands, Without Love, and Never Say Goodbye.
R.E.M.
4/5
Listened to the album in two parts, one 15 minute session and another finishing the album while drunk. Good listen under that context, like a nostalgic wavey vibe where you sit on the ocean all day. Phases in and out. Cool with that view of it. Couldn’t tell you anything I listened to, though. Not an accurate review. Standouts: Pilgrimage, Catapult, 9-9, We Walk, and West Of The Fields.
Fever Ray
2/5
This really wasn’t anything I enjoyed. Too experimental and not sonically interesting to listen to. She doesn’t have a bad singing voice, but she hardly sings here. Moreso croaks. Standout: Keep the Streets Empty For Me.
The Smiths
4/5
Love The Smiths. Good album, a lot more theatric than what I’ve heard before because of the production. I prefer the other sound, but this is still good. Good final album for them. Standouts: Death of a Disco Dancer, Girlfriend in a Coma, Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before, Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me, and I Won’t Share You.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
4/5
I love Maps. One of my favorite songs, so I was looking forward to hearing the album it came from. This album is not like that song, it’s the outlier. Can’t quite call it one thing because it feels unique. Abrasive, sensual, noisy, and in the clouds. Some criticism of men and love. The lyrics are mostly for a vibe, not to really parse through. Standouts: Rich, Date With The Night, Pin, No No No, Maps, and Y Control.
Leonard Cohen
4/5
Forgot to write. Cool collection of folk songs. Sounds like stuff you’d hear around the campfire, and not strained vocals like Bob Dylan. Standouts: Bird on the Wire, Story of Isaac, A Bunch of Lonesome Heroes, The Partisan, and Lady Midnight.
Pink Floyd
5/5
First time listening to a Pink Floyd album. What an awesome and rich album. The melodies, the layers, the lyrics, just great. I loved the Shine On You Crazy Diamond parts. I thought it was completely justified and cool that it was split up, and you can tell when the parts transition between each other. The entire album stands out.
Black Sabbath
4/5
Not quite my vibe, but had a good time listening to the album. Kind of a quiet album, as in you get what you hear. Maybe clean would be a better way to put it. I remember someone in my family played The Wizard all the time in the car, so it was nice to remember those times. Standouts: Black Sabbath, The Wizard, N.I.B., and Wicked World.
Rod Stewart
3/5
This is a good folky rock kind of album. Rod Stewart has a good voice and can have some good storytelling here. Wish it stayed towards that more, but some songs throughout the album like to repeat choruses for a majority of the song. Not interesting. Standouts: Gasoline Alley, Country Comfort, and Lady Day.
Radiohead
5/5
What an amazing album. No time wasted, straight to the point. Loved Kid A, and it’s cool to hear a more traditional rock album from Radiohead. I’ve been purposely avoiding listening to the rest of their discography since then so I can hear it for this. Masterful artistry here. Loved how layered the sound is between the vocals and guitar riffs. I want to include the entire album for the standouts, but I will refrain. Standouts: The Bends, High and Dry, Fake Plastic Trees, (Nice Dream), Just, My Iron Lung, and Black Star.
Funkadelic
4/5
Sweet and sour bowl movements. A mental, musical bowl movement. Psychological turd remover. A fun and silly funk fusion album. Not serious, just about the vibe. Not on Spotify right now, so no standouts to list, but it was a good listen and that last song before the outro was awesome. Pink Floyd kind of song.
The Replacements
4/5
Diverse rock and punk rock album about growing up and uncertainty. Some good themes here overall. Didn’t care for the extra songs on the expanded version, but I enjoyed this album more than I was expecting. The second half of the album was what I enjoyed most. Standouts: We’re Coming Out, Tommy Got His Tonsils Out, Black Diamond, Seen Your Video, and Sixteen Blue.
Shuggie Otis
4/5
A mixture of funk, jazz, and ambient music. A colorful experience. Made for a unique album and listen. Lots of different instruments. Not completely sold on some of the songs. It sometimes drifts off and back in again. Standouts: Island Letter, Aht Uh Mi Hed, Rainy Day, Not Available, and Strawberry Letter 23
The Afghan Whigs
3/5
Great rock album. Feels adjacent to Alice In Chains. Themes of abuse, manipulation, and the fallout of a romantic relationship. The vibe is spot on. Love whatever they’re doing with the instrumentals. The singer’s cadence didn’t feel quite right to me, but it did make for some unnerving moments. Album twisted the expected, kept me on my toes. Some transitions and leitmotif. Standouts: Gentlemen, Be Sweet, Debonair, When We Two Parted, Fountain and Fairfax, My Curse, and Brother Woodrow.
Jimi Hendrix
4/5
First time listening to a Jimi Hendrix album. Enjoyed it. Thought it was a really good rock album. Interesting guitar riffs throughout the songs. Standouts: Spanish Castle Magic, Wait Until Tomorrow, Little Wing, Castles Made of Sand, One Rainy Wish, and Bold As Love.
Paul Simon
3/5
Didn’t pay too much attention to the album. Didn’t find it engaging. It sounded fine, but not anything I’d go out of my way to listen to again. Folk? Couldn’t tell you. Standouts: Peace Like a River, Paranoia Blues, and Congratulations.
Steve Winwood
3/5
Another okay album. Sounds like the 80s, for sure. Steve Winwood has a good voice, but the music wasn’t engaging. It was pleasant to listen to. Good background noise or elevator music. Standouts: While You See A Chance and Second-Hand Woman.
Bob Dylan
4/5
This is either 3 or 4 for the number of Bob Dylan album’s I’ve got. One of the better ones I’ve listened to. Felt like he actually sang for this one. Had some pep in his step. Good messaging as always, and the music accompanying him isn’t just acoustic guitar and harmonica for a lot of the songs. Standouts: Simple Twist of Fate, You’re a Big Girl Now, Idiot Wind, Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts, and If You See Her, Say Hello.
Tim Buckley
3/5
Tim Buckley has a great voice. The songs here were okay for the most part. Didn’t care for Gypsy Woman. Love from Room 109 was such an awesome song though. Layered, dense, switched up the tempo. Really fun track. I was only really invested in 2/6 of the songs. Standouts: Buzzin’ Fly and Love from Room 109 at the Islander.
Steely Dan
4/5
Love some Steely Dan. This album sounded very clean. Production quality is up and lost some of the rough edges. Which had their charm for me. The album is still great, but I did not enjoy it as much as I did Pretzel Logic. Heavy jazz. Standouts: Aja, Deacon Blues, Peg, and Home At Last.
Soundgarden
4/5
I have fond memories of playing Black Hole Sun on Guitar Hero 3. Or whichever one it was. Good grunge rock album. Vocalist has some chops. Lyrics didn’t stick out too much for me. Band is always there with just enough sound. Felt rich and dense. Standouts: Fell On Black Days, Mailman, Head Down, Black Hole Sun, The Day I Tried To Live, and 4th Of July.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
Forgot to write. Bob Marley. Some good stuff here. Pleasant, tropical, some good messaging. Standouts: No Woman No Cry, Them Belly Full (But We Hungry), Talkin’ Blues, Revolution.
Brian Wilson
3/5
After reading the Wikipedia article for this album, it makes a lot more sense. I thought it was just The Beach Boys, which technically, yes. What I didn’t like about it was how many songs in the first half of the album just stop and switch to a B side of the song. It took me out of the listening experience. “What are they doing?” Was what I would say to myself. I really liked the three part song of Song for Children, Child Is Father of the Man, and Surf’s Up. This album was overall good, but I’d much rather listen to a different, finished Beach Boys project. Standouts: Heroes and Villains, Surf’s Up, Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow, and Good Vibrations.
Van Morrison
4/5
Really good live performance. Van Morrison has a good voice, and the band plays great. Liked the first disk more than the second. Standouts: Warm Love, I Believe to My Soul, I’ve Been Working, Wild Children, Saint Dominic’s Preview, Caravan.
Kendrick Lamar
5/5
A must listen rap album. Love the way the narrative is woven between all of the songs. The songs are fun, loud, funky, introspective, and impactful. I’ve listened to it before, and I don’t like coming back casually because I enjoy sinking my teeth into the music. Standouts: Wesley’s Theory, King Kunta, These Walls, u, Alright, Momma, How Much A Dollar Cost, You Ain’t Gotta Lie (Momma Said), and i.
Doves
3/5
Mixed album. I liked the melancholic but upbeat vibe to the album. I also liked how they used noise to convey the radio/broadcast theme. The songs were a mixed bag for me. Some of them good, some were a bit annoying, and I wanted the interludes to be full songs because they sounded cool. Standouts: There Goes The Fear, N.Y., and Pounding.
Jane's Addiction
3/5
Kind of wacky punk rock album. I enjoyed some of the songs, but for me, the vibe didn’t quite match what I like. I think I knew the song Jane Say’s from Rockband or Guitar Hero. I liked the jazz song near the end. Funny. Standouts: Ocean Size, Ted, Just Admit It…, and Jane Says.
The The
2/5
Listened to this while doing homework. Kind of a nothing album for me. I don’t remember what I had listened to. Seemed fine for what it was. Standouts: Heartland and Sweet Bird Of Truth.
Beatles
4/5
I was surprised by how diverse this album was and how many songs I enjoyed. Still not a Beatles fan, lover, or anything close to that, but I was able to pull some fun out of it. The double album does drag near the end, but there is a good peppering of those good songs. Standouts: While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Martha My Dear, Blackbird, Rocky Raccoon, Don’t Pass Me By, Everybody Has Something To Hide Except Me and My Monkey, and shelter Skelter.
Buzzcocks
2/5
Didn’t care for the first half of the album. It’s a debut album, but it feels too isolated and rudimentary on some of the songs. Either the lyrics are isolated and sound bad, or the instrumentals are isolated and sound uninteresting. Garage band feel, which has its charm. Second half of the album changed up the sound a bit and got more consistent quality. Standouts: I Don’t Mind and I Need.
Destiny's Child
2/5
Don’t care for R&B. They all have great voices, though, so I was able to enjoy some of it. The big hits from the album come off as annoying for me. Standouts: Nasty Girl, Independent Women Pt. II, and The Story Of Beauty.
Iggy Pop
3/5
Thought this album was a mixed bag. The sound was really good, distinct and fun, but I didn’t care for a lot of the lyrics throughout the songs. Especially on Turn Blue. Kinda weird. Standouts: The Passenger, Tonight, and Neighborhood Threat.
Rush
4/5
Really liked it. Fun assortment of rock songs, some with banging guitar riffs. Blend of synth in there too. My favorite parts were admittedly where there was no singing. The lyrics didn’t do anything for me. After the first two songs, Rush went on a home run. Standouts: YYZ, Limelight, The Camera Eye, Witch Hunt, and Vital Signs.
Hüsker Dü
3/5
I lost what I wrote. Treated it like Irish pub kinda music, like songs that you hear in that kind of setting and that kind of vibe. Too many songs, got a bit bland, but some were really good. Standouts: These Important Years, Ice Cold Ice, Could You Be The One?, and She Floated Away.
Aimee Mann
5/5
This album is untapped nostalgia. I loved it. Alt pop/folk/storytelling album that feels almost wholly unique. Endearing and fun. A modern band that feels adjacent would be Men I Trust, but this is a more pop feel. Nothing here I felt was bad or out of place, the only exception being that the ending has too much of a high school theater kind of vibe. I’ll say it’s a guilty pleasure for me. Standouts: Pretty much everything here.
U2
4/5
Another really good album from U2. Similar complaints to Joshua Tree where the songs I knew or knew of were great but the rest of the album wasn’t able to match it. Good listen, and I did enjoy it more as an album than Joshua Tree. Standouts: Sunday Bloody Sunday, New Year’s Day, Like A Song…, and Two Hearts Beat As One.
Paul McCartney
3/5
The album was okay. I liked some of the experimental guitar playing and when Paul wasn’t singing. I hate the moaning or grunting shit at the end of the album. So weird that so many album do that stuff. Standouts: Valentine Day, Every Night, and Junk.
Gram Parsons
3/5
I thought the album was okay, but I did not pay too much attention to it. Gram Parsons and the female vocalist both have great voices. Standouts: Return of the Grievous Angel, Medley Live from Northern Quebec, and In My Hour of Darkness.
Jorge Ben Jor
4/5
I came into this album expecting it to be like the other Afro-Latino music I got on here. This one was a bit different. Jorge Ben Jor has some chops. Fun listen, would for sure return to the standouts, and wouldn’t mind listening to the whole thing again. Standouts: Ponta De Lanca Africano, Meus Filhos, Meu Tesouro, Taj Mahal, Xica De Silva, and Africa Brasil (Zumbi).
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
2/5
I listened to this album while doing homework in class. I didn’t enjoy the last album I had of him, and this was more of the same. It’s fine, but not anything I enjoyed. No standouts because I didn’t stop to check my phone while I played the album.
Talking Heads
4/5
Really enjoyed this album. Funky, noisy, strange, but fun. I liked a lot of what was offered here. I will say, that I thought the songs were too long. Repeatedly I would look at my phone when I thought the song would be over and it was always only half way. Standouts: Born Under Punches, The Great Curve, Once in a Lifetime, and Listening Wind.
Sugar
3/5
Listened while doing homework for this album too. It was okay. The lyrics were sometimes a bit corny, but the album is a bit corny. Standouts: The Act We Act, The Slim, and Slick.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
Love some Bob Marley. Liked this one more than Natty Dread. Standouts: Concrete Jungle, Slave Driver, 400 Years, Stir It Up, and No More Trouble.
Foo Fighters
4/5
Good debut album with some good variety. The album didn’t pick up for me until the middle, not a boy fan of This Is a Call. Couldn’t really dig into the album like I expected to. Standouts: Alone + Easy Target, Good Grief, Floaty, For All the Cows, and Exhausted.
Madonna
2/5
This album was bizarre. Not in a good way. I have never listened to Madonna before, and I’m gonna assume this was the outlier. Product of its time, certainly should not be made now. I liked glimpses of the production, like how some of the chopped instrumentals or samples were, but a lot of it is grating. Some of it feels brilliant and avant-garde. Some of it feels like trash. Can’t pinpoint how it made me feel. Standouts: Music, Runaway Lover, Don’t Tell Me, and Gone.
Metallica
5/5
Great album. Would have been cool to hear it for the first time like when it was released. Don’t have time to write. Standouts: Master Of Puppets, The Thing That Should Not Be, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Disposable Heroes, and Leper Messiah.
The Byrds
3/5
Cream meets the Beatles. Really enjoyed the first half, but everything after the song with the rocket taking off was not for me. That “song” ruined the rest of it. The album did do some cool things sonically, otherwise. Standouts: 5D (Fifth Dimension), Mr. Spaceman, I See You, and Eight Miles High.
Jane's Addiction
3/5
I didn’t have any opinion on the album until Three Days. I found some things okay, and a lot of instrumentals or lyrics strange. Three Days was a good song and so was the one after. Otherwise, I can’t say I liked the album. I can’t decide if it is good or bad. Mediocre describes it best. Would not want to listen to it again. Standouts: Three Days and Then She Did…
Tangerine Dream
3/5
Listened to it on YouTube because Spotify only had two of the four songs. It was okay. Ambient, electronic, strange. One of the songs reminded me of music from SMT. When you start getting sick of a sound that’s repeated, it ends up changing. Constantly changing.
Kanye West
5/5
Kanye is my favorite artist and this is either my favorite or top three Kanye albums. Amazing album.
Public Enemy
3/5
I enjoyed the overall vibe of the album, but the message doesn’t resonate with me. It’s not for me. I also think the album ran too long. There were some fun and witty lyrics throughout the album which were appreciated. Not a bad album. Standouts: Brothers Gonna Work It Out, Welcome To The Terrordome, and Burn Hollywood Burn.
Grateful Dead
3/5
20 minute opening jam track. I wasn’t very interested by what I heard in this live performance. Maybe I didn’t pay enough attention to it. Not a bad album. I did like the ending song. It was like a short campfire song. Standouts: St. Stephen and Turn on Your Love Light.
Neil Young
4/5
Had a good time listening to the album. It felt inviting. Mix of rock, country, and blues. I had heard two of the songs before. The music has an air of nostalgia around it, not for me personally, but it sounds like it. A time capsule. Standouts: Walk On, See The Sky About To Rain, On The Beach, and Motion Pictures (For Carrie).
Wild Beasts
4/5
I did enjoy this album. The rhythm and instrumentals are varied, and bouncy. Definitely the best part of the album. It still commits that cardinal sin of 2000s indie music, which is having that sort of socialist commune sort of vibe. Lyrics that don’t mesh with me, and vocabulary which is cringey at times. This album was sort of a guilty pleasure that way. Standouts: The Fun Powder Plot, Hooting & Howling, We Still Got The Taste Dancin’ On Our Tongues, Two Dancers (i & ii), This Is Our Lot, and Through The Iron Gates.
Doves
4/5
Atmospheric, wavey, and dreamy. Liked it a lot. Lyrics are mostly whatever or just chorus, but the long instrumentals draw out the best of the album. Hit the right vibe for me. Standouts:
Radiohead
4/5
Kid A B sides. Cool album and it does some cool things instrumentally. Not as cohesive of a project as Kid A. More experimental? I did think it was cool to have another version of Morning Bell. Not a must listen, but great. Standouts: Pyramid Song, Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors, You And Whose Army?, I Might Be Wrong, Knives Out, Dollars and Cents, and Life In a Glasshouse.
Leonard Cohen
2/5
Didn’t like it. Leonard Cohen sings ring into your ear he is so damn close to the microphone. The subjects discussed in the album didn’t grab me. Would not want to listen to it again. Standout: Leaving the Table.
The Smiths
4/5
Another good album. More of what I enjoy from The Smiths. I liked how Morrissey depicted eating meat, even if I disagree. Entertaining. Well I Wonder is one of my favorite Smiths songs. Standouts: Rusholme Ruffians, I Want the One I Can’t Have, Nowhere Fast, Well I Wonder, and Meat Is Murder.
Eric Clapton
3/5
This album was okay. I didn’t get into it until halfway when I heard I Shot The Sheriff. Not too much to say about it. It sounded fine, nothing bad on the ears. Standouts: I Shot The Sheriff, Please Be With Me, and Let It Grow.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
3/5
I thought the album was good, just not quite my thing. I knew Bad Moon Rising, and it’s still great. I didn’t know these guys wrote Suzie Q either. Standouts: Wrote A Song For Everyone, Bad Moon Rising, Sinister Purpose, and Glory Be.
Sisters Of Mercy
3/5
Really did sound like an 80s album. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect going into this one, and I’m still come coming out of it. It has some cool ideas with the choir, but a lot of it feels played out. Not a lot of feelings on it otherwise. Standouts: Dominion/Mother Russia and This Corrosion.
Spacemen 3
2/5
I did not finish the album. I listened to all of the songs from Disk 1 but did not listen to anything from Disk 2. Disk 2 was all demos and alternate takes. I liked the song Suicide, but not enough to hear it three times. That’s the issue with the album; it feels bloated. I liked some songs, but the album is not one I’d like to finish or return to in its entirety. Standouts: Come Down Softly To My Soul, So Hot (Wash Away All My Tears), and Lord Can You Hear Me.
The Sugarcubes
3/5
Thought the album was interesting, but I’m not too crazy about it. The female vocalist has some good range and is very expressive. She made the album for me. The songs were strange yet charming at times. Standouts: Birthday, Mama, Cold Sweat, and Blue Eyed Pop.
The Doors
4/5
I liked the album. I knew a couple of the songs going in, but the new ones were good overall. Not too much to say. Standouts: Break on Through, The Crystal Ship, Light My Fire, and I Looked At You.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
4/5
Cool live performance. It was like medieval rock, jazz, and a little bit of electronic music mixed together. I can’t remember the lyrics, but the vibe was good. Standouts: The Gnome, The Sage, The Curse of Baba Yaga, and The Great Gates of Kiev.
Fiona Apple
4/5
Very artsy fartsy album. Interesting, too. Didn’t know what to expect going in because I had never heard a Fiona Apple song before. She does have a good voice and crazy range. The songs themselves are not always enjoyable. Not boring, but ear grating. Standouts: Fetch The Bolt Cutters, Under The Table, Rack of His, Ladies, and Cosmonauts.
Willie Nelson
4/5
Another Willie Nelson album. I really enjoyed it, but don’t have much more to say besides that. More of the same, and it’s good. Standouts: Time of the Preacher, Blue Eyes Crying In the Rain, Red Headed Stranger, Just As I Am, Can I Sleep in Your Arms, Hands on the Wheel, and Bandera.
Curtis Mayfield
4/5
I really enjoyed this album. Funky, fresh, low down jazz. Helped improve my mood today. Not as bombastic as the Superfly record, but this was still a treat. Standouts: Billy Jack, So in Love, Jesus, and Love to the People.
Kanye West
5/5
The most explosive Kanye album, and one of my favorites to listen to through its entirety. Hold My Liquor is in my top 5 Kanye songs. Standouts: everything but I’m A God and Send It Up.
Supertramp
5/5
Totally unique, wonderful, and vibrant rock album. Very pleasantly surprised by this one. Love the harmonica, piano, guitar, lyrics; all of it. Just hits right. I don’t know how the replay value will be. Standouts: everything but Dreamer.
The Killers
5/5
This album was awesome. It’s like teenage romance. Passionate, volatile, endearing. Loved the mix of rock and pop with synth. The bass in the intro track just hooked me. The ending was a bit too tongue in cheek for me, but it gets the job done. Standouts: Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine, Mr. Brightside, Smile Like You Mean It, Somebody Told Me, All These Things That I’ve Done, On Top, Change Your Mind, and Midnight Show.
4/5
Liked the album. Was pleasantly surprised by parts of it. The political commentary doesn’t take itself too seriously and is tasteful. Not too much to say besides that. Standouts: Some Mother’s Son, Drivin’, Shangri-La, Young and Innocent Days, and Nothing to Say.
Goldfrapp
4/5
This album was a bit experimental like the Fionna Apple one I listened to earlier this week. More grounded though. One of the songs that stood out to me was either sampled by Kanye in Freestyle 4 from TLOP or used the same song for it. Cool stuff. Definitely would listen to it again. Standouts: Human, Pilots, Deer Stop, Oompa Rider, and Horse Tears.
The Clash
3/5
Thought this album was a bit boring. Too many songs, and a good chunk of them were too similar. Not much to say besides that. Standouts: Hateful, Lost in the Supermarket, Wrong ‘Em Boyo, and I’m Not Down.
Lou Reed
3/5
I didn’t get what the album was about in the first half and it felt very all over the place. The second half decided on more of a serious tone and I found enjoyment in that. If the whole thing felt more uniform it would be better. Standouts: How Do You Think It Feels, Caroline Says II, and The Bed.
LCD Soundsystem
4/5
A slow start getting into the album. It used a lot of spacious electronic sounds to drive the music forward, and it didn’t always work for me. Sometimes it amped them up with some drums and guitar, which hooked me. Lyrics flip between direct and vague. Overall good album with some shining moments. Standouts: other voices, how do you sleep?, tonite, call the police, and american dream.
Big Star
3/5
I’m writing this the next day, and I don’t really remember the album. It was okay, some of it was good. There was a cover of femme fatale which was okay. Standouts: Thank You Friends, Holocaust, Blue Moon, and Take Care.
Aretha Franklin
4/5
It’s good, it’s Aretha Franklin. Not sure why the songs repeated twice though. I couldn’t hear a large difference if there was any. Standouts: Respect, Drown in My Own Tears, Don’t Let Me Lose This Dream, Baby, Baby, Baby, and Do Right Woman, Do Right Man.
Paul McCartney and Wings
4/5
Good album. I enjoyed the lyrics and guitar the most. Paul McCartney didn’t make it weird or anything like the other solo album I listened to from him. Standouts: Band On The Run, Jet, Mrs Vanderbilt, Mamunia, and Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five.
Julian Cope
3/5
I only listened to disk 1. This album was okay. Most of it blended together and it was a bit too long for me. Not much to say. Standouts: Safesurfer, Soldier Blue, Head, and Hung Up And Hanging Out To Dry.
The Rolling Stones
4/5
I liked the album but it was a bit long. The songs were upbeat and fun. They sounded full, and nothing felt out of place. Standouts: Rocks Off, Tumbling Dice, Sweet Virginia, Torn and Frayed, Loving Cup, Let It Loose, and Shine A Light.
James Taylor
4/5
Mixture of country, blues, and rock music. James Taylor has a great voice, very soft spoken yet enthusiastic. Had a great time listening to the album. I enjoyed the country songs but not the blues ones. Standouts: Sweet Baby James, Country Road, Oh, Susannah, Fire and Rain, and Anywhere like Heaven.
Janelle Monáe
4/5
This album had me constantly asking what it was. It’s a chameleon with so many different colors. R&B, stadium rock, electronic, pop, etc. Janelle Monae has a great voice. I loved how in the first half of the album, sets of three songs would transition directly into each other. That said, I fell off in the second half of the album because it was on the longer side and had lost its luster. I also don’t think these songs work as singles. That’s not a bad thing, just that it works better as an album. Standouts: Dance or Die, Faster, Locked Inside, Tightrope, Oh, Maker, and 57821.
Burning Spear
3/5
Solid reggae album. No complaints. Standouts: Marcus Garvey, Tradition, and Jordan River.
Television
4/5
This album reminded me a lot of The Strokes. I liked it, and would enjoy listening to it again. Standouts: Venus, Marquee Moon, Elevation, and Torn Curtain.
Manic Street Preachers
4/5
I enjoyed the album and thought it had some good sound. Didn’t care for the rhetoric, but I was able to look past my biases. Standouts: Yes, She Is Suffering, 4st 7lb, Faster, and This Is Yesterday.
Cowboy Junkies
3/5
An okay album. The lead singer has a very pleasant voice. The band accompanies her well with quiet and subdued instrumentals. I found that a lot of the songs blended together into one sound, which made the songs forgettable. Standouts: Blue Moon Revisited (Song For Elvis), I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry, and To Love Is To Bury.
Blur
3/5
Not a very fun album for me. Similar thoughts to the Oasis album that I listened to a while back, but instead of sounding phoned in it just sounds uninteresting. I can’t quite pin why. The instrumentals were strange in a way that I probably should have enjoyed, but it didn’t hit like that. Oh well. Standouts: Song 2, M.O.R., and Death of a Party.
Jamiroquai
3/5
A funk/jazz fusion album. I was not feeling this album today. On another day it would be better. There is nothing wrong with it, just wasn’t feeling it. Standouts: If I Like It, I Do It, Emergency on Planet Earth, and Revolution 1993.
Gotan Project
3/5
Latin jazz/hip hop beats combination. Cool combo. It surprisingly had a good variety of different sounds throughout the songs. Cool stuff overall, but not quite my thing. Standouts: Queremos Paz, Epoca, Santa Maria, and Vuelvo Al Sur
Brian Eno
3/5
This album made me mad. As I listened to it, I kept thinking that this could be great, but Brian Eno puts shit in there to piss me off. I didn’t recognize his name at first, and as I listened it reminded me of the Another Green World album. Then it all made sense. I liked the contrast he had between the songs on the second half of the album. While the “bad” songs didn’t sound the greatest or had something to piss me off, they were followed by tracks that were rather beautiful. Driving Me Backwards was a song I really liked but Brian Eno almost ruined it by putting in a distorted guitar riff that sounded like the loudest summer cicada I’ve ever heard. Other times he uses yelps to draw me out of the music. Standouts: Driving Me Backwards, On Some Faraway Beach, Dead Finks Don’t Talk, and Here Come The Warm Jets.
Blur
3/5
Teenybop Brit pop album. I liked that this album had more of an identity than the first one. I just don’t really like what it is. Standouts: Girls & Boys, Badhead, Clover Over Dover, and Jubilee.
Fela Kuti
4/5
Some good jazz with lyrics. Spacious. Not much to say about it besides that. Standouts: Zombie and Mistake.
The Velvet Underground
4/5
Likes this one a lot more than the other album I listened to. I think it was because it was a lot more normal. Standouts: What Goes On, Pale Blue Eyes, Beginning To See The Light, and After Hours.
Steely Dan
5/5
A quintessential 5. I love this album so much. Too many iconic songs to have it be any less. The whole album stands out.
The Who
4/5
Good live performance from The Who. If I enjoyed them more, I’m sure this would have been very special. Standouts: Fortune Teller, Young Man Blues, I’m A Boy, and A Quick One, While He’s Away.
Herbie Hancock
4/5
I have nostalgia for this album because we played two of the songs in high school jazz band. Good album. Standouts: Chameleon and Watermelon Man.
Count Basie & His Orchestra
5/5
Classic big band album. I don’t know much of the history or significance of Count Basie. I know I listened to an awesome jazz album, though. Standouts: The Kid from Red Bank, Flight of the Foo Birds, Whirly-Bird, Midnite Blue, and Lil’ Darlin’.
Marty Robbins
5/5
Loved it. Knew Big Iron from Fallout: New Vegas. Just love this kind of music, and Marty Robbins is an amazing singer. The large group version of E Paso was the cherry on top. Standouts: Big Iron, They’re Hanging Me Tonight, Cool Water, The Strawberry Roan, The Master’s Call, The Hanging Tree, and El Paso.
The Doors
2/5
Wasn’t impressed by this album. It was cool to find out that The Doors sing Riders on the Storm. Never would have expected that. But the rest of it was just okay. Nothing here for me. Standouts: Love Her Madly and Riders on the Storm.
Scott Walker
3/5
The beginning of the album left me confused for what the rest of it would be like. I ended up enjoying a good part of the album, especially the mid section. He has a good voice, but sometimes the lyrics were strange. Standouts: Black Sheep Boy, Plastic Palace People, Wait Until Dark, and The Girls and the Dogs.
Boston
4/5
Great classic rock album. Enjoyed the two songs I knew and got to enjoy a good part of this album. The rhodes piano is a funny callback for me. Seems like it was very popular back then. Standouts: More Than a Feeling, Peace of Mind, Foreplay / Long Time, and Hitch a Ride.
The Rolling Stones
4/5
Another good Rolling Stones album. I have yet to have one that blows me away, but they have been consistent and solid. That is what they do best from what I have heard. I also think the final songs on the albums are great. Standouts: Sympathy For The Devil, Jig Saw Puzzle, Stray Cat Blues, and Salt Of The Earth.
Missy Elliott
3/5
Early 2000s rap. Never heard a song by Missy Elliot before. I thought the instrumentals were good overall, and some were really good. Made me think that 50 Cent should be rapping on them. He had a remix at the end, but I didn’t care for it, so maybe they weren’t for him. Missy Elliot has a good flow, but I felt mostly indifferent to her lyrics. Her speeches created a nice line through the project. Overall good, but not for me. Standouts: Bring the Pain, Back in the Day, and Play That Beat.
Tears For Fears
4/5
Great 80s pop album. I forget the name of the guy who sings, but he has one of the best voices out there. It was cool to hear some of the songs transition into one another. Didn’t expect it. There are a lot of classics here, but I didn’t enjoy everything else here. Shout is a classic, but I find that song annoying. I got the idea of the ending song Listen, but it went on too long and I wish it was just the instrumentals without lyrics. Standouts: The Working Hour, Everybody Wants to Rule the World, Mothers Talk, Broken, and Head Over Heels / Broken.
Sly & The Family Stone
4/5
Good album. Funky and fun. Listened off and on, but still enjoyed it. Standouts: Stand!, Sing a Simple Song, Sex Machine, and You Can Make It If You Try.
Donovan
2/5
This album was not for me. It was like folk with a lot of Indian motifs in there and it did not hold my attention. Standouts: Legend of a Girl Child Linda and Celeste.
The Fall
3/5
Standard punk rock album. Nothing bad here, just not the biggest fan of it. Played SF6 while I listened to the album. Standouts: Rebellious Jukebox, Industrial Estate, and Futures and Pasts.
David Bowie
4/5
Black star was the first David Bowie song that I ever listened to on my own, so I have a bit of nostalgia for it. This album is strange, but it doesn’t get stranger than that song. Cool to hear the whole album, which is very much still a Bowie album. Definitely a swan song. Very enjoyable. Standouts: Black Star, Lazarus, Girl Loves Me, Dollar Days, and I Can’t Give Everything Away.
Kraftwerk
3/5
Not a big fan of this album. Granted, I only listened to it with one airpod in. I liked Trans Europe Express more. Just not really interesting or fun. Similar problems to that album as well where it becomes too repetitive. Also similarly, I would like to listen to it again to get more out of it. Standouts: Kometenmelodie 2 and Morgenspaziergang.
Fred Neil
3/5
Solid blues/country album. Fred Neil has a good voice. I love the Harry Nilsson cover of Everybody’s Talkin’, and it was cool to hear the original. Standouts: The Dolphins, Ba-Di-Da, and Everybody’s Talkin’.
Radiohead
5/5
This album was amazing. I listened to it twice and enjoyed it a lot. I don’t quite get the analysis of computers’ predicted impact on our “modern” lives. Maybe sI didn’t listen close enough. Nothing here is a miss. Standouts: Airbag, Paranoid Android, Exit Music (For a Film), Let Down, Karma Police, Electroneering, Climbing Up the Walls, No Surprises, and Lucky.
David Bowie
4/5
Another David Bowie album. Good stuff overall. A little strange to have the three instrumental tracks back to back in the second half of the album, but they sounded nice and blended into each other. Standouts: Heroes, Sons of the Silent Age, Black Out, and Moss Garden.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
3/5
Didn’t pay a lot of attention to this one. It was fine. Standouts: Born On The Bayou, Good Golly Miss Molly, and Proud Mary.
Fairport Convention
3/5
Listened to it at work. It was okay.
Rage Against The Machine
4/5
Listened to this at work as well, so I didn’t get to record the standouts for this one. Good album. Exciting, lively, and angry. Good time.
The Flaming Lips
4/5
Listened to this one at work as well. It was like a mixture between Pulp and Pavement. I think that’s a pretty good description. Some of the lyrics were annoying, but there were a lot of instrumentals that caught me off guard. Some cool stuff. No standouts because I couldn’t see the titles.
Muddy Waters
4/5
Good blues album. Standouts: Mannish Boy, Can’t Be Satisfied, Little Girl, Walkin’ Thru the Park.
Stephen Stills
4/5
A fun and sometimes touching rock/blues album. Some cool instrumentals throughout, and the choir accompanying Stephen Stills was nice. Simple lyrics, but they were endearing. A pull yourself out of the mud kind of album, but not preachy. Standouts: Love the One You’re With, Church (Pt. If Someone), Old Times Good Times, To a Flame, and We Are Not Helpless.
Radiohead
5/5
This album is a more more subtle, orchestrated Kid A for me. Loved it. Rich, vibrant soundscapes. I knew Weird Fishes and Jigsaw going into it. Was pleasantly surprised by the rest of it. I’m gonna try listening to it while alternating between it and OK Computer. Standouts: everything.
John Lee Hooker
3/5
Realizing the more I get blues albums back to back that they’re just not for me. Another solid blues album. Standouts: The Healer, Think Twice Before You Go, and My Dream.
Neil Young
4/5
A good Neil Young album. Some tender moments and it was overall enjoyable. Not much to say otherwise. Standouts: Out on the Weekend, Heart of Gold, Old Man, Alabama, and Words(Between the Lines of Age).
King Crimson
5/5
Amazing album. I’ve listened to it before and enjoyed returning to it. Played it twice at work yesterday. Moonchild does run too long for me, but the first half is great. Standouts: Everything.
4/5
Flash in the pan 80s goodness. Really cool first listen. Second half was more boring. Standouts: Show Me, Poison Arrow, Tears Are Not Enough, and The Look of Love Pt.1.
Röyksopp
2/5
Good instrumental beats, but not much to chew on. Got boring after a while. Songs that do have lyrics still direct focus to the beat in the background. I would have liked this a lot more when I was younger. Not my thing nowadays. Standouts: Sparks and Remind Me.
Alexander 'Skip' Spence
3/5
Better to “skip” this album. It was okay. A folk singer-songwriter kinda vibe to it, which was alright. Some songs were good, but overall the album runs too long. The last couple of songs are less than a minute and blend into each other. Cool for that. Standouts: Little Hands, Margaret-Tiger Rug, Dixie Peach Promenade, and This Time He Has Come.
The Strokes
5/5
Amazing. Love the album. It gets you right there, and keeps you there for the whole ride. Standouts: Is This It, The Modern Age, Someday, Last Nite, Hard To Explain, Trying Your Luck, Take It Or Leave It.
Scott Walker
4/5
Forgot to write. It was a good singer songwriter kind of album. Felt very theatric for the late 60s. Standouts: The Seventh Seal, On Your Own Again, The World’s Strongest Man, and Hero Of The War.
Meat Puppets
2/5
Album was annoying. Listened to it at work, and it made my day longer. I can see a lot of newer whiny stuff that may draw inspiration from this, but a lot of those newer bands can sing better.
U2
4/5
I thought this album didn’t hit the highs of Joshua Tree but kept a higher average quality compared to that record. It still gets some hype moments, like in Ultra Violet. Standouts: Zoo Station, Until The End Of The World, So Cruel, Tryin’ To Throw Your Arms Around The World, Ultra Violet, and Acrobat.
Finley Quaye
2/5
This album was a lot of things. Reggae, hip hop, rock, etc. Didn’t care for it, but parts of the record made me not hate it. It showed some creativity that was engaging. Still, not for me. Standouts: Even After All, Your Love Gets Sweeter, and Maverick a Strike.
Tim Buckley
3/5
Enjoyed this album more than the other Tim Buckley album I listened to. More Tim Buckley. Once I Was was a beautiful song. Standouts: Pleasant Street, Once I Was, and Phantasmagoria in Two.
The Mars Volta
5/5
This album was a beautiful fever dream. I have little idea what it was. High octane. Bizarre. Took me aback consistently. I don’t know how replayable this album is, but it was a cool first listen. Standouts: Everything but Tira Me a Las Aranas and Drunkship of Lanturns.
Nirvana
5/5
Just as good as Nevermind, if not better. Depends what you’re looking for. Great experience. Standouts: Everything but Rape Me, Fraces Farmer Will Have Her Revenge, and Tourette’s.
Eels
4/5
More whiny white guy music. I liked it, but not completely sold on it. Standouts: Novocaine For The Soul, Rags To Rags, Not Ready Yet, Guest List, and Spunky.
Death In Vegas
2/5
Atmospheric grunge/rock. A lot of strange bleeps and bloops were added to make the songs annoying, and the lyrics ranged from nothing to annoying. Not a good listen. Standouts: Dirge and Lever Street.
John Lennon
1/5
First hate review. Fuck John Lennon. An honest review would be a 3. Good production with lyrics I hate. Standouts: Oh My Love and How?
The Crusaders
5/5
Beautiful funky jazz album. Nothing misses, everything is where it should be. The melodies are light and varied. Loved it. Every song stood out.
The Divine Comedy
4/5
Album does a good job at being a play. Listened to it at work. Not everything hit for me, but sometimes it turned itself up. Liked it. Standouts: Something for the Weekend, The Frog Princess, A Woman of the World, and The Dogs & The Horses.
My Bloody Valentine
5/5
I love My Bloody Valentine. Helped me get into shoegaze. This album wasn’t as good as their second, but it does its own thing. More dreamy, less intense overall. Loved it. Standouts: everything but and this and yes and nothing is.
T. Rex
4/5
Solid rock album. Good chops on the vocalist. I knew Get It On. Listened to it at work, so I missed a couple of the standouts. Standouts: Mambo Sun, Cosmic Dancer, Monolith, Get It On, and Life’s A Gas.
Ryan Adams
3/5
This was a real mixed bag. Ryan Adams has a good voice, but the instrumental choices were all over the place. A lot of Americana type stuff and some power ballads. Diverse album that suffers from it. Standouts: Firecracker, La Cienega Just Smiled, When The Stars Go Blue, Wild Flowers, and Harder Now That It’s Over.
Simon & Garfunkel
5/5
Never listened to S&G outside of The Sound of Silence. This album was very enjoyable. Right length, maybe a bit longer would have been nice. Overall great and definitely want to listen to it again. It gets a five from me for how solid it is. Standouts: Scarborough Fair/Canticle, Cloudy, Homeward Bound, The Bug Bright Green Pleasure Machine, The Dangling Conversation, Flowers Never Bend with the Rainfall, For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her, and A Poem on the Underground Wall.
Thin Lizzy
4/5
Great live performance. Didn’t know they were Irish. The link that sent me to Spotify cut out 40 mins of the album. Didn’t listen to it all today. Maybe in the future. Standouts: TBD.
Goldie
2/5
What a long ass album. I enjoy drum and bass in short bouts, not for nearly 2 hours. I started paying less attention and enjoyed it. Standouts: Sea of Tears, Angel, and You & Me.
Various Artists
4/5
Christmas. Liked the message at the end.
Yes
4/5
Cool to hear some Yes. I love a couple of their songs, so it was nice to hear more. Distinct sound. Standouts: Yours Is No Disgrace, I’ve Seen All Good People…, A Venture, and Perpetual Change.
Dusty Springfield
4/5
Good old timey music. Dusty has a good voice. Standouts: All Cried Out, Summer Is Over, Don’t Say It Baby, Guess Who?, and Every Ounce Of Strength.
Lana Del Rey
4/5
I liked it. Quiet, tender, close. First half of the album was what I really liked. Standouts: White Dress, Tulsa Jesus Freak, Let Me Love You Like A Woman, Dark But Just A Game, and Not All Who Wonder Are Lost.
Sam Cooke
4/5
Forgot to write. Another solid jazz performance. Great listen. Standouts: Feel It (Don’t Fight It), Chain Gang, Twistin’ The Night Away, Somebody Have Mercy, and Having A Party.
Eminem
4/5
Not an Eminem guy, but this made me like him a bit more. Witty, edgy, juvenile, uncomfortable, and dense. A must listen. Kim is top 5 most uncomfortable things I’ve listened to. Standouts: Kill You, Stan, The Way I Am, The Real Slim Shady, Marshall Mathers, Drug Balled, Bitch Please II, Kim, and Criminal.
OutKast
4/5
Didn’t catch all of the standouts because I was working. Good vibe overall, but I didn’t enjoy the new stuff as much as what I already knew. Standouts: So Fresh, So Clean, Ms. Jackson, and B.O.B. - Bombs Over Baghdad.
KISS
4/5
First time listening to a KISS album. Good stuff. Standouts: Detroit Rock City, King Of The Night Time World, Sweet Pain, Shout It Out Loud, and Beth.
Violent Femmes
3/5
Pretty indifferent to this album. Didn’t quite reach me. Listened to it at work, so I don’t have any standouts besides the song I knew. Standout: Blister In The Sun.
Talking Heads
4/5
Some more Talking Heads. Good. Listened to it at work, so I missed some of the song names. The alternate endings were good as well. Standouts: Mind, Cities, Heaven, and Animals.
Jimmy Smith
4/5
Another solid jazz album. Not much else to say. Standouts: When I Grow Too Old To Dream, Minor Chant, and On The Sunny Side Of The Street.
The Pharcyde
5/5
Really great and fun rap album. Similar kind of fun as the Beastie Boys. Interesting and driving beats. Skits got a chuckle out of me. Standouts: everything but the skits/interludes, Ya Mama, and Pack the Pipe.
Neil Young
4/5
Another Neil Young album. Good stuff. The second half of the album was the best part. Standouts: Everything but After The Gold Rush, Only Love Can Break Your Heart, Till The Morning Comes, and Cripple Creek Ferry.
John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers
2/5
Really didn’t care for this one. Was not interested in listening to it at work. Just not for me that day. Didn’t keep track of the standouts.
Frank Sinatra
4/5
It’s basically one large extended track by Frank. Good stuff overall, touching, sweet, and a bit coercive. Standouts: Everything but Change Partners and How Insensitive.
Suzanne Vega
3/5
Singer songwriter album with a really cool knight and castle motif. Thought the idea was super solid and interesting, but felt like it fell flat for more songs than it worked. Unfortunate. I really wanted more out of the album. Standouts: Cracking, Marlene On The Wall, The Queen And The Soldier, and Knight Moves.
Beastie Boys
4/5
Some more Beastie Boys. This album was packed with songs I had known prior but never knew they were from the BB. Songs like Brass Monkey I enjoyed before, but never put two and two together. Very pleasant and fun experience. Standouts: Rhymin & Stealin, She’s Crafty, Girls, No Sleep Till Brooklyn, and Brass Monkey.
4/5
Diet The Pretenders. More like somewhere in between The Pretenders and Pixies. Good, fleeting songs. Short and sweet. Standouts: The Once over Twice, Adult Books, It’s Who You Know, Back 2 the Base, and Year 1.
David Ackles
3/5
Another theatrical and grand album. Sometimes to its detriment. David Ackles has a good voice, but the lyrics didn’t always capture me. Felt a little lost at times. The first half of the album had some wit and was playful. Standouts: American Gothic, Ballad of the Ship of State, and Oh, California!
The Cars
4/5
Album of classics. Loved what I knew, but not as impressed with what I hadn’t. Still good overall. Standouts: Good Times Roll, My Best Friend’s Girl, Just What I Needed, You’re All I’ve Got Tonight, and All Mixed Up.
Talking Heads
4/5
Some more Talking Heads. Good, but definitely better in the second half. Standouts: Thank You For Sending Me An Angel, Warning Sign, I’m Not in Love, Take Me to the River, and The Big Country.
Tracy Chapman
3/5
You’ve got a fast car, and an alright country folk album. That’s about all of my thoughts on it. Her voice is soothing. Standouts: Fast Car, Baby Can I Hold You, and If Not Now…
Thelonious Monk
4/5
Good, solid jazz album. Simple. Songs ran a little long. Standouts: Brilliant Corners, Pannonica, and I Surrender, Dear.
DJ Shadow
3/5
Solid instrumentals album. Some of them reminded me of ones I would listen to on YouTube growing up. That said, want too great. Standouts: Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt, Changeling, Stem/Long Stem, and What Does Your Soul Look Like - Pt. 1.
The xx
5/5
Guilty pleasure music. I know exactly what it’s gonna sound like and what the lyrics will be because it’s 00’s indie pop, but I can’t help it. I liked it. It’s not actually a 5, but I enjoyed too much of it. Standouts: Intro, VCR, Crystallised, Islands, Heart Skipped A Beat, Shelter, and Nighttime.
Black Sabbath
4/5
Great album. The classics that I knew from Black Sabbath. Standouts: War Pigs, Paranoid, Iron Man, Electric Funeral, and Fairies Wear Boots.
Stevie Wonder
3/5
Don’t remember much about it. Sounded pleasant
Everything But The Girl
5/5
I remember that I really loved this album when I listened to it at work. I was really busy during it, so I didn’t have time to record the songs. Worth a second listen to figure it out
The Jam
3/5
Do not remember this one. A brief check on Spotify tells me it was good.
Brian Eno
4/5
I remember that this was a great ambient album. Brian Eno does a good job.
Aretha Franklin
4/5
It’s Aretha Franklin. Good stuff.
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
2/5
Had to listen to this on YouTube. What a weird album. I overall didn’t like it, but there were certain moments that stuck out to me as good or clever. Mostly, not something I enjoyed.
The Prodigy
3/5
I remember this one had the iconic song Voodoo People. I ended up enjoying this a lot more than I thought. Still not quite my thing.
Cocteau Twins
5/5
One of the nearly perfect albums. I loved a couple of songs that I had in my own personal rotation, but I held off on listening to the album on my own because I figured I would get it on here someday. Amazing.
CHIC
4/5
Good R&B/Disco. Enjoyed it.

3/5
Reggae. Liked it more than one of the first ones I listened to. Take it or leave it.
Peter Gabriel
3/5
Really don’t remember this one. Sounds okay, a bit dramatic.
Ella Fitzgerald
4/5
This was a long, long album. I ended up treating it like listening to the Fallout radio. I do enjoy these old songs, but man, what a slog to listen to all at once. Better experienced in pieces.
SAULT
2/5
Not for me. It was alright, with a couple of cool instrumental ideas.
Ray Charles
4/5
Good Ray Charles album. Wish I could have paid more attention to it. Willing to give it another listen.

Some more Dolly. Sounded fine. Not much to say.

Some more of The Clash. Good overall, but forgettable.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse

Another good Stevie Wonder album. Don’t remember much, but the vibe was good.
Manic Street Preachers
4/5
I remember turning around on this one. Was not impressed at the beginning but started enjoying it halfway through.
John Grant
4/5
Bit of a strange one, but good. Definitely dips into the preachy side, for better or for worse. Liked it.
AC/DC
4/5
Classic. Enjoyed this more than Guns N Roses, that’s for sure.
Astor Piazzolla
2/5
Remember not liking this one. I think it was mainly because I was having a bad day. Thought it was uninteresting and a bit annoying.
Mike Ladd
2/5
A bit strange lyrical miracle kind of music. Not for me.
Sonic Youth
4/5
Don’t remember much about this one, but paging through it showed how cool some of the sounds were.
Queen
4/5
More Queen. I liked it more than the album that had Bohemian Rhapsody.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
4/5
This album ran long, but I remember enjoying some of the messages and deliveries throughout the runtime.
Dennis Wilson
