5.5/10 Good, but not particularly memorable. I listened to it and almost instantly forgot what I heard - I only know it was just barely above average.
Best Neil Young so far.
Rate: 7/10.
cinnamon girl a good start here, very easy going and catchy chorus. everybody knows this is nowhere, maybe spoke to me about how i feel in life rn, i can't find a way but here is supposed to be the place to find a new better life from the one i grow up in. round & round has words i can't comprehend but still feel like a very sad song. down by the rive, love the guitar solo in the middle of the song is such a breath moment and it cuts the story right where you want to keep listen when he talks about how this person he spoke so good has to be shot, this feel like a track that could be dine for a bonnie and clyde. the lonsing end, a heartbroken song about missing the person and missing part of yourself with them gone, but still trying to keep going. running dry, the violin took my attention immediately, is a very calming tone for the story he's telling about being alone because of his own doing. cowgirl in the sand, talks to a same woman about her different alias so i get to think he knows her and ask the question of when all the changing name and charming everyone is just nothing, i still don't gwt the deep meaning but is all i got. i like the album is a very soft rock(?), short in songs but its length is good enough, the instruments get to breathe in each song and i believe is telling a story i just couldn't understand.
Not the best Old school and like a cowboy and a bit too American. 2 stars
Master of mellow and monotone guitar solos.
I thought this was fine, somewhere in the middle. Nothing stuck out to me. It wasn't bad, but I didn't feel great about it. Wouldn't listen to it again, but if it was on in the background I wouldn't complain, I guess?
The Red Dead Redemption soundtrack if the electric guitar had been invented back then
I really enjoyed this
Aika perus-kitararockia. 3/5
Some good moments on this one. Nothing stood out but nothing was bad either.
Nothing here grabbed me but it wasn't bad.
3.25 - I liked it pretty well.
Coup de coeur sur cowgirl in the sand
Another Neil Young. This is better than most of the others I've had so far, and not too long. Favourites: Down By The River, Cinnamon Girl
Nice
This was better than the last one I listened to. 6/10
Neil Young is a fucking ICON. You want a chill album to put on in the background? No sweat. It doesn't matter if you're doing Saturday morning cleaning, a cross country road trip, or you need the perfect playlist to commit a heist to. Anything Neil Young touches is fucking gold.
Down by the Riveriä erityisesti on tullut paljonkin kuunneltua.
More NY and CH. Great stuff.
It’s either overplayed or overhyped or both and it’s never clicked with me despite being an obvious classic. Love the Ditch Trilogy though!
One of my favorite Neil Young quotes is when he said that CSN are his Beatles, and Crazy Horse are his Stones. The rough, earthy tone of this record was a subtle 60s shockwave that eventually reverberated into an entire archetype of dusty, slackery rock music. That said, this isn’t an album that has connected with my personal taste as much as Young’s 70s output. The title track is one of my favorite songs ever made, and while “Cowgirl In the Sand” and “Down By the River” still blow my mind out the back of skull, moments like “Round and Round” and “Running Dry” do not hold my attention at all. I’m someone who likes Young at his slower and more emotional, but these particular tracks just overstay their welcome and really bog down what is an otherwise life-changing opus in rock history. Fav Tracks: Cinnamon Girl, Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, Down By the River, Cowgirl in the Sand Least Fav: Running Dry (Requiem for the Rockets) Score: 8
I’ll start this off by saying that I like the song “Cinnamon Girl.” I like the rhyme of “saxes” and “relaxes,” and the continuing almost-thrashy guitar. I also have to say that there’s a duck called a Cinnamon Teal, so whenever one comes to my attention I sing to myself “I wanna live with a Cinnamon Teal, I could be happy the rest of my life with a Cinnamon Teal.” So that’s a thing about that song. “Down by the River” is a classic song - I love all the threatening guitar sounds that come in for that long break after the first set of vocals. Definitely merits its 9-minute length. I was thinking of a 3 for this album after "Round & Round," but then was reminded of what I like about Neil Young while listening to this song. I’ve just never been sure about this plot - what’s the timeline here, regarding the person sending him over the rainbow vs shooting his baby dead. But who cares, great guitar solo. “Running Dry” sounds like “In the Pines,” doesn’t it. I like the strings that come in, and then go out at the end; it’s a poignant folk tune. I’d never heard this track before and I really like it. Quibbles: I've never been a fan of the title track; I think it would be greatly improved if he got rid of all the la la la las. “Round & Round” is a little too smooth and goes on too long. He says it won’t be long, but it is long. And while “Cowgirl in the Sand” has some wonderful guitar solos, the lyrics have always gotten on my nerves. So, tl:dr: there's some lovely guitar work on this album, which offsets a few annoying bits.
Pretty great album. A few stinkers. An unbalanced amount of "la la la's," but Neil's guitar sound is worth the annoyance. Nothing quite like Neil Young, man. Favorites: "Down By The River" "Running Dry" "Cowgirl in the Sand"
Neil Young just has a direct link to my soul.
banger
The guitar riffs on the songs are phenomenal.
Better than the other Neil young I’ve had so far. He still can’t sing hit at least it’s it elevator music.
Not my favorite Neil album but it’s got some bangers! I love the jammy, country-rock nature of it
Very long songs. Pretty good, but idk if it’s something I’d be coming back to to listen.
Neil Young sucks
Album #298 Neil Young and Crazy Horse: Everybody Knows This is Nowhere The unfiltered stream of artistic expression released by Neil Young between 1969-1979 is something that will never be replicated. I’m still dumbfounded whenever I return to an album from that era and think about how the next year he was already releasing another classic. Neil Young has two modes: his solo albums and his collaborations with Crazy Horse. Typically, his solo work is known to be more stripped back and folksy, whilst he gets more electric and gnarly with Crazy Horse. I think Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere is the pinnacle of both modes colliding. You have the intimate folk ballads by way of the title track, The Losing End, and Running Dry, but you also have the suffocating epics in Down By the River and Cowgirl in the Sand; for all intents and purposes, this album is essentially progressive folk. The fact that this was just Young’s second solo release, and that he found this sound so early, is insane to think about. Weirdly enough, my favourite Neil Young song is on this album, but it’s not an obvious pick. The Losing End is one of those songs that just utterly speaks to me; it’s not even just the memories it brings up when I listen to it, but whenever I do, I feel a wave of emotion wash over me, an effect that only a select few songs like Fare Thee Well, Ms Carousel, So Long, Marianne, and Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands have on me. One of the best albums of the 60s, and even further, one of the best of all time. I can’t tell if this is the perfect introduction to Neil Young, or the worst, though, since I find that people tend to enjoy one or the other of his modes. Best Songs: The Losing End, Down by the River, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere Worst Song: None Score out of 10: 10
Didnt like the opening track enjoying everybody knows this is nowhere i do sort of see similarities to newer music like cameron winter round and round is a really nice sounding track out of the gate i love the sound of down the river overall, pretty good album, probably wouldnt really listen since i dont love bluesy rock a lot, just a little too twangy for me
Decent album. Although there are a few things that I dislike. First of all the instrumental parts drag on for far too long and causes me to lose interest quickly. And what is going on with the vocals on Running Dry, it almost makes the song unlistenable for me. The first half of the album is definitely the best but it really starts to lag towards the end only picking up at the very end of the last song. The instruments sound really good, it’s produced quite well and everything is crystal clear which I think you need for acoustic guitar especially. I quite like Neil Youngs voice, it suits the acoustic songs nicely but on Cinnamon Girl his voice doesn’t really suit the rock and roll kind of style so I think he should stick to acoustic songs. The actual playing on Cinnamon Girl is really good though that’s probably what the band excels at. Therefore I don’t think Neil Young and the band mesh particularly well, it’s definitely an interesting sound but not one that captivates me. I don’t think this album is bad and I would probably come back to it, it’s kind of a pleasant listen. Best song is surely the title track. It doesn’t drag out with the instrumentals and the guitars sit quite nicely in the music. The vocals sound excellent especially with the harmonies. I think that’s all I have to say, this is a pretty decent album overall.
Melodic, country rock. Nice to listen to.
3.5
Pretty big fan of Neil young after the last couple of albums, I like the chilled vibe
Classic american texas rock sound. Overdrive and old school guitar.
An album with multiple almost 10 minute long songs that are mainly guitar was a tough pull for my first day. Not really my thing but not a bad vibe.
Meh. I didn’t love this, wasn’t the worst thing I’ve ever heard though.
Love me some Neil - this isn't his best, but it's darn good.
The Losing End @ 2:46
I don’t care much for Neil Young. Never have. This album did nothing to move the needle on that for me.
JL : 2, Running Dry (Requiem for the Rockets)

Really enjoyed this, the bass playing is sublime and I really like how they're able to control the dynamic to keep a 2 or 3 chord vamp interesting for an extended period
Neil young- he’s an artist I like but can only listen to every once in a while. His music can be kinda simple folk rock, sloppy and rough around the edges, kinda whiney it’s probably what people get from punk rock. Definitly very influential forblotsnof 90’s alternative rock. I actually like his vocals and think the harmony sound was cool on the second song. He is like a good bad guitar player. He’s got limitations and that’s his style and you can totally tell it’s him. Cool how Down by River solo is mostly just one or two notes. Still too many guitar solos on this record . 4
I really can’t stand the vocals and everything else sounds bad too
Just.. eh. Didn't grab my attention. but wasn't absolutely terrible. It's already been a couple hours since i've listened to it and it feels like a dream or a distant memory.
Raw and unpolished greatness (which is hard to do). Neil young is not the best singer, but it hits just right. 3.5
Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand both were pretty great. At least in the instrumental parts. 😅 But the rest were pretty forgettable and/or boring for me. But I will say, Neil Young is growing on me, maybe even more than Dylan. 6/10 Pretty Good
Bueee... Ta bueno
Great album. Favourite tracks: Cowgirl in the Sand Down by the river Everybody knows this is nowhere
Pretty decent record, I like his voice for a reason I can't describe. But it's not a landmark release, so it will be an average score.
4/7 songs saved
"What’s with that crummy-looking cover?" you might ask. Yet, it perfectly captures the album's sound: sometimes light, sometimes overdriven, but always raw and natural. Neil Young’s output seems to swing wildly — one moment he’s making rather dreary country-folk, the next, gritty, semi-live proto-grunge. This record leans toward the latter style and is split roughly down the middle between acoustic ballads and garage-rock bangers. There are only seven tracks in total; two of them run ten minutes long and are the most compelling, featuring jams and something akin to a guitar duel between Young and second guitarist Danny Whitten. Rumor has it that Young wrote half the songs while laid up with a fever of 39.5°C. That’s almost certainly nonsense — any man will tell you that at 37.5°C, playing the guitar is out of the question.
It was nice album good driving music
Liked Cowgirl in the Sand.
This is an insanely well-made album: there's clarity of lyrics, consistency and accessibility of sound design (not just production) - it's engaging in so many ways. YMMV on the the ending, but tume flies by.
Never listened to any Neil Young album before. Pleasantly surprised! Of its era for sure…but help make that era. Skip The Losing End and it’s a much better album. Stand out tracks: Down by the river & Cowgirl in the sand
Someone recently told me they thought that Neil Young was to American music like the Beatles are to UK music. I wanna officially state that I do not agree. The songwriting is just not as strong. However, I have always liked how he sounds and I got along with this album just fine.
Super mid? Thinking I may need to revise some scores because this was a 2 but not a Slipknot 2.
so good! i would imagine this is great driving music but alas i can't drive so who knows
3,5/5 Everybody knows this is nowhere - Banger, musica legal para ouvir dirigindo a noite. Adicionei a minha playlist. 4,1/5 Round & Round(It won't be long) - Muito boa, musica mais introspectiva, tem varias camadas que podem ser percebidas e interpretadas. Minha favorita do album. 4,4/5 Down by the River - outra musica meio comum, mas essa são 9 minutos. 3,5/5
The title track and Cowgirl in the Sand are outstanding, now I need to go listen to Mirror Ball
Great album really enjoyed Cowgirl in the Sand even though it’s 10 minutes long
So very meh.
Neil Young is such an exceptional songwriter. Down by the River with its extended jam is a true classic.
Great. Especially liked the longer songs that had a lot of interplay jamming. Cinnamon Girl still sounds fresh, too.
Fairly chill album. Good when studying.
Peak Neil. I Just Had To Learn some of these on guitar. All the the Young elements that made him stand out from CSN and in Buffalo Springfield. How is it possible that Cowgirl and Down By The River are on the same album? In the same century? If you listen where you can hear the distinct contributions (say, park your head between your desktop speakers) you learn how important Crazy Horse is to this album. Country garage acid is its own genre and Neil its high priest, those separate influences pointillistically portrayed on the cover, his pre-grunge grunge flannel vestments casually front and center. This is somewhere.
I'm finding that there are Neil Young songs that are among the greats of history — when he lands something, it's up there with the best. Other songs just don't carry the same epic quality, and simply by comparison, fade as they play. Both often sit side by side on an album. Loved so much of this. Can remember the rest. Except for that unnecessarily long fuzzy solo at the end.
other than Cinnamon Girl, this did nothing for me
Good album
I prefer this to the other Neil Young I've heard but something just misses with Neil Young's vocal style and writing for me. Best Tracks: Down by the River, Cowgirl in the Sand 7.5/10
Fuzz box at its best
Nice. Very nice. Just so pleasantly nice
I already listen to this before
Pretty usual NY, but not his worst
Great debut
Down by the river is a great somg
I liked this one more this time around than a year ago when I first heard it. Don't think I'd put it on my top 5 Neil Young albums, but I like it.
Decent album not really listened to crazy horse much. Some nice vibes but sometimes went on a bit long
Great guitar sound. Like the loose playing even when the songs stretch out.
Solid 3.5/5.0, *maybe* a 4.0/5.0
There are a couple of thoughts about this album. It’s the first time Cinnamon Girl is on a record. It won’t be the last. Neil Young likes his songs. He likes Crazy Horse. I think they are his best backing band but he has had some great players with him. Neil Young likes to play the guitar. He doesn’t always have the best singing voice. All these things are here on this album. I put it on in the background and just enjoyed the music. It’s good. It’s not my favorite album of his but I know it’s good music.
Had some good songs, but it wasn't really cohesive.
Another great NY album 4/5
Great classic album. Not a huge Neil Young fan but this was decent. A couple songs go on a little too long.
Seth - 4.5/5 Logan - 3.5/5
Favorite songs: Cinnamon Girl, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Down by the River, The Losing End (When You’re On), Cowgirl in the Sand
