Reviews (page 3 of 13)

This may be my favourite Neil Young record, some classic rock songs on it. Very raw in it's production with some really nice guitar solos

Easily my favorite Neil album. The live stuff with Crazy Horse around this time is also great. Listening to this and I'm back on a couch playing Madden '93 on Sega. Good times.

This experimental rock album of Neil Young is a must-listen from one of my guitar heroes.

He's always just so good!

Everybody knows this is an incredible album. I could scream “down by the river” infinitely.

Repeatedly smashing the fifth star

Absolute classic.

Neil Young and ketchup potato chips are the two best things Canada produced in the 20th century.

I’ve only ever listened to Neil Young because of this project. I can now safely say that I am a fan of the man’s work. It just sounds like what would good music should sound like, it feels like what could music should make you feel like & it’s something you can throw on at anytime to set a good vibe.

Classic

90's rock is very different if this album didn't exist

Sounds just like Neil Young fucking great. Loved it. I should buy this record

Great classic album.

Didn't expect to like this as much as I did, short and sweet nice vibe.

Love this album, might be my favorite album of all time. The tracks on here are truly stellar. Cinnamon Girl is a great opener and reminds me a bit of Mr. Soul from Buffalo Springfields second album. Down by the River has such mesmerizing guitar playing that I could listen to for hours. The regularly reoccuring harmonies sound really nice as well.

good long jam

This is a great album

From the opening guitar riff cinnamon girl. To the 10 minute finale of cowgirl in the sand this is just a tremendous. One of my favorites of Neil Young.

Solo Neil Young: I sleep Neil Young & Crazy Horse: REAL SHIT I love this album so much and think it’s Neil’s best by far. “Down by the River” and “Cowgirl in the Sand” are two fantastic songs that serve as pillars of the album. There’s something about the leisurely yet precisely deliberate pace of each that is hypnotizing and transforms the soundscape into a world with rushing rapids, a hot dry sun, and a meaningful hard days work. Sit me down in that album cover in the shade of the tree with a glass bottle of coke and let me look out over the mountains. That’s what this album sounds like

I confess I’m a big fan of Neil Young, even the more obscure stuff, so this review isn’t entirely objective. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, released just four months after his solo debut, marks the true beginning of Young as the revered artist we know today. Much of this can be attributed to the recruitment of Crazy Horse, who take Young’s rolling chord progressions and sweet melodies and tear them apart like the teeth of a mountain lion. Instead of refining the songs, they rip through them with jagged intensity, exposing raw nerves and untapped emotion. The contrast between Young’s plaintive vocals and the band’s rough-edged delivery creates a tension that balances on the edge of chaos. This electric tension adds volatility, making the songs feel alive and dangerous. “Cinnamon Girl,” with its punchy riff and infectious energy, showcases the perfect blend of melody and grit. “Down by the River” is a hypnotic epic, its extended jams and dark narrative building a haunting sense of unease. “Cowgirl in the Sand” blends dreamy introspection with fiery guitar work, while the title track captures Young’s yearning for escape with its breezy rhythm and underlying restlessness. These tracks aren’t just highlights; they’ve become foundational to Young’s career, merging folk sensibilities with hard rock through Crazy Horse's distinctive style. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere explores both the beauty and darker sides of human emotion, framed by Young’s raw and evocative songwriting. Did I own this release? No Does this release belong on the list? Yes Would this release make my personal list? I have to include at least one Neil Young release; the tougher question is which one. Will I be listening to it again? As a big fan of this record, its seven tracks (40 minutes) make it perfectly digestible.

Amazing album a must listen

Muy bueno

Not a bad song on here! Might be my favorite Neil Young album, maybe.

Minn maður. Mín tónlist. Ekkert út á hana að setja og þessi fer aftur í spilun og aftur og aftur. Ég er bara afskaplega gömul sál held ég en ég sakna þessa tónlistartímabils án þess að hafa upplifað það

This is amazing. Sketches of raw and gritty songs, fantastic sound for 1969. The dissonant instrumentals (guitar solos, violins) add so much emotion to the dramatic folky lyrics. I love the cover too - I've been listening to it a lot during long morning walks with my dog along the frozen river here in Warsaw. Nothing but the misty river surroundings, a cup of coffee and this on my headphones. A perfect album

"Down by the River" ist stellvertretend für die verschiedenen Stilrichtungen und den Anspruch seiner Kompositionen. Genial.

This is what I was talking about last week. I never considered Neil a performer, but he's an incredibly talented acoustic songwriter. This album phenomenally blends his songwriting chops and composition skills with that perfect amount of distorted guitar crunch. Love love love this one in context of his anthology of work.

Cinnamon Girl and Down By the River album.

I’m going to have to dive into Neil’s full catalog at some point. He has all the key criteria that I like from artists I deem “worthy” of such investigation: an almost ornery resistance with a heavy dose of “I don’t give a shit” attitude about what’s commercial, and a unrelenting pull to trying new genres and styles as they chase after their artistic muse. The benefit of such artists is no two albums are the same, as they’re willing to challenge thenselves and ultimately us as listeners. Coming to this album from After the Gold Rush and Harvest, I was blown away at how different this was. Almost MoTown like in some of the instrumentation. But at the core, it’s Neil jamming with his soon to be legendary Crazy Horse crew, producing a classic.

This is the Neil I feel like people always talk about. Cinnamon Girl is such a bad ass song and even the slower songs in the middle of the album just have a certain vibe that helps carry it through.

Everyone Knows This is Nowhere's brand of sloppy, loud country rock still blows as many socks off as it did in 1969. people (falsely) claim it invented grunge, but i think it did something even better: it invented neil young. there's something meat-and-potatoes simple about the songs, the most beloved ("Cinnamon Girl", "Down By The River") having been written in a 103 F fever. maybe it shows. but it doesnt matter. you can tell what EKTiN is about from the cover art alone: a grainy picture of a man, but just enough detail so there's no mistaking who it is. plus there's a cute puppy.

Neil Young, a living legend! One of the biggest shames I have as a musician and music lover is never having explored this icon's discography in depth. Of course, the most famous albums from the 70s have been part of the soundtrack of my life for a long time, but here today is an album that I had never heard of before. And I really don't want to say anything about the record. Nana not today. I just want to sit my ass down in the chair and listen to this record over and over again and reflect on where I was and what I was doing all these years for me to have never heard this masterpiece before. So if you'll excuse me... (5 stars, of course)

Young's self titled solo debut is decent, but this is the breakout hit for one of the all time legendary songwriters. It showcases both his ability to rock out with the extended solos of Cowgirl In the Sand and Down By The River, alongside more tender and thoughtful songs. Even with all the material he released throughout the long career that would follow, this album is still a shining example of many things that are great about Neil Young

Young's first album with Crazy Horse Cinnamon Girl Down by the river A "ten"

Quintessential Neil Young. When you think of Neil this is what you think.

His best album

It has some of my favourite Neil Young songs, Crazy Horse is an amazing backing band to help bring them to life.

Sizzling guitar! With so much grit in the music.

One of my favorites from the get go. Nobody plays or writes like Neil.

Stellar album. One of my favorites. This never really comes out of rotation and every time I hear I'm like, wow this is really good

My favorite NY album. Three great guitar dominant tracks, Cinnamon Girl, Down by the River, and Cowgirl in the Sand. The other 4 tracks are slower, but all quite lovely. Reading about the recording process on the Wiki page was insightful. Had to look it up on setlist.fm, but when I saw him live in Hartford in September of 1986, he did CG and DBTR. Also performed were Heart of Gold and The Needle and the Damage Done from yesterday’s album. I recall the concert was very loud. This came out in May of 1969, when I was living in Spokane (until moving to Princeton in August) and wasn’t much of a record buyer at that time. My first NY album was ATGR, but probably did not buy it for a year or so after its 9/70 release date. Then I bought ENTIN and his self titled debut soon after that. A classic.

sehr gut, feel good Album

Neil Young is finally back on Spotify

Classic music

Love Neil Young sound

The true start of Young’s remarkable solo career. Raw and rocking, it’s filled with excellent songs that demand to be played at max volume, but also a handful of beautiful slow burners with magical harmonies. Running Dry may be the only weak point, but a minor fault on this otherwise excellent classic.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve found myself saying the phrase, “Oh, what the fuck is this?!” with less frequency and excitement whenever I listen to an album for the first time. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere made me say, “Oh, wait…what the actual fuck is THIS?!?!” to every single song, then immediately start it all over again. Even after listening to it obsessively all day, even on listen 7 and counting, my jaw is still on the fucking floor. Every element — the songwriting, the lyrics, the drum sound, the bass grooves, the vocal choices, the unique rhythm playing, Young’s solos, the production, EVERYTHING — instantly rewired my brain and redefined my understanding of what a rock album could be, let alone what a song could be. This could come out tomorrow and sound light years ahead of its time. Mind blown 🤯🤯🤯

Did everyone just have to spend all their money on records in the '60s? Was it exhausting trying to keep up with everything that was coming out? Cinnamon Girl was one of the first songs I loved and advocated for that I found on my own and wasn't approved by my older brother or punk friends (though it turned out they did also love it).

Neil Young can be very hit or miss with me. The CSNY solo albums are always "Yeah, but they'd be so much better as CSNY albums" with me. But this was fantastic. Really easy groove to get into for the entire album. Favorite track: Cowgirl in the Sand

You can’t beat the guitar sound on this album.

The beginning of Neil's long, weird journey. After his first solo album, he decided to rock. HARD. This one has some of his enduring classics and he let's them breathe with a great backing band.

YAAAAAY

Honestly one of the best albums you'll ever hear.

I love Neil Young. Especially when he works with Crazx Horse. Like on this record. Enough said.

Jeder Song eine Perle.

Great when released. Even better after all these years. I would buy this recording. 👍

Likely my second favorite Neil studio record. Love everything about it. 5/5

4.6 - Another great neil young album, love the guitar and just great vibe

Really enjoyed this one

My first ever Neil Young album. I'll always love it.

Three tracks on one record that have strongly influenced Neil Young's unmistakable musical style, great!

Rock on brother loved it

Fundamental, ao começar com todo o esplendor de Cinnamon Girl, chega a sublime Down by the River e confirma a glória da discografia com Cowgirl in the Sand.

Lovely stuff. Neil Young's guitar sound is so iconic, it sounds so simple, low on effects but gives such a great sound. Also his solos are really not complicated but sound so great.

I listened to this twice — the first time I had it on in the background as I was doing other stuff, and it didn't really connect beyond the first couple songs. Then I gave it another listen while giving it my full attention, and wow. I've always meant to get into Neil Young but never got around to it. That was a mistake. This album is great. It's got a ton of vibey psychedelic jams, but it also has a lot of great slower songs with introspective lyrics (some more abstract than others). There's even a cool almost Balkin-style violin solo on Running Dry that's really different. Neil's voice is great at conveying emotion, and the harmonies with the Crazy Horse band members and guest vocalists (like Robin Lane on Round & Round) are nice. Highlights: Cinnamon Girl, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Round & Round Also, I feel like it needs to be said that RHCP totally ripped off Cowgirl in the Sand for Californiacation. 5/5

So good. SO GOOD! I don't think there is a dud at all on this album. Classic!

Less than one song in and I'm reminded that this is classic, awesome, solid. I don't know what else to say. Everybody knows this is wonderful.

Great musician. Great album. Love it!

a classic - the start of a fruitful collaboration between Neil Young and Crazy Horse that I thoroughly enjoy. Nice blend of hard and raw rock with some country and folk influence. Starts with the powerful but groovy riff of Cinnamon Girl, a few folky ditties with nice harmonies, and some excellent longer form jams with Down By The River and Cowgirl in the Sand. Some great lyrics throughout. Solid guitar playing and the band just has the right feel - loose, grooving, interesting but not showy… it feels both rehearsed and improvised. They just sound the way a great band should sound. Excellent album.

Mowing the lawn? Listen to this and drink lots of water.

Simple yet brilliant song crafting from one of the best.

Another 5 star album. Neil had a lot of Really Good albums and a few bombs. This is on the really good side 5 stars

I mean, it's Neil Young, how could it not be a 5 star album? To be fair, of the four Neil Young albums I've had come up so far, this is probably the weakest and almost has a low point or two in some of the shorter tracks. However, the three biggies, Cinnamon Girl, Down by the River, and Cowgirl in the Sand are just so good that the album deserves a 5 even if the other tracks were recorded by the dog on the album cover.

March 23, 2024 I’ve liked the other Crazy Horse albums on this list so far, but this debut offering by them sure feels like lightning in a bottle. The rational part of my brain wants to laugh at the one-note guitar solos in “Cinnamon Girl” and “River”, but the rest of me is reaching for that 5-star button…

I didn't really listen to any Neil Young until my 40s. Which I guess is also the right time to listen to Neil Young. This is a great rock and roll album, from the production to the raw sound of live recording. More one note guitar solos in my life and this sounds tremendous in Atmos.

Another classic Neil Young album I was forced to play through physical media. I respect the choice. Some of my favorite songs on this album are some of my favorite Neil Young songs...Cinnamon Girl, Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, Down by the River, Cowgirl in the Sand.

It's weird listening to music on YouTube. It's not like on Spotify or iTunes where the track delineations are part of the medium, differentiated by artist-uploaded 10-second GIFs for each song. It's not like on CD where on any given player sometimes all you see are just the track numbers. And it's not even on like vinyl, where nothing is labelled but the cracks will still you when something new is coming. YouTube albums are you to get lost in. And this is a great soundtrack to get lost in. Fuck it...

Fuck yeah. No notes.

One of my two favorite Neil Young records.

Again a perfect album no notes

No longer on Spotify, so I didn't listen yesterday, but I've listened to it countless times over the years. Fantastic record start to finish.

This is the first of a trio of essential albums from Neil Young. Between 1969 and 1972 he released “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere”, After The Gold Rush” and Harvest”. An amazing trifecta of outstanding albums. All of which I’ve owned for many years. From the opening of “Cinnamon Girl” through the last strains of “Cowgirl In The Sand”, the album is outstanding. It has the loose style that Young fostered with Crazy Horse, not sloppy, but “real”. Not polished but full of texture. Cowgirl, Cinnamon Girl are iconic Neil Young songs, along with Down By The River. The title track is a classic. The others are very solid complements. All 3 of the aforementioned songs are 5/5, and this one kicked off the run. Easy 5/5.

Fantastic album.

Love the rangy, grunginess of Neil, full stop. What I love about this album is how it brings out more rock & roll feel while hanging on to a distinctly folk-music underpinning. Somehow it transforms into another rock & roll thing altogether.

I really enjoyed listening to this. So many great songs

One word to describe this album - raw. I've always felt that Neil Young has an incredibly emotional voice. It has that slight warble - almost like a vibrato that he's fighting to contain - that makes sure you know that his voice was not adulterated by some machine. He juxtaposes that with a fuzzed out guitar that is screaming to be let free. And it's not just some gimmick of contrasts that he employs. His sense of song comes through on tracks like Cinnamon Girl, and his musicality really shines with extended jams on tracks like Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand.

classic, still can't get enough of this record - sent me into a Neil spiral

No one jams like this. Dolby Atmos sounds so good with this too

Enjoyed it

Great album, and I had never heard any of the songs before, to my knowledge. Will need to snag myself a download of this one, since it is not on Spotify.

Classically good

Arguably one of the best, if not the best album bei Neil Young & Crazy Horse (a close contender would be on the beach). It has the typical Neil Young sound with the edgy guitar and the country rockish groove without replicating any cowboy clichés. Hell, there's even a song about cowgirls on here! Every track is a banger on here. Most noteworthy is the trippy "Down by the river" and Young's guitar interplay with Danny Whitten. The two guitars in dialogue is one of the best of its kind in rock music. Another important track is "Running Dry" which sounds very folky and makes great use of the violin as the only other guest instrument. Listen to this!

Weird..was just talking about this album the other night. I bought this on the afternoon it came out and it eventually became the only album I actually wore out. As the reader may know, Neil Young removed all of his music from Spotify some time ago in response to Joe Rogan's (?) Podcast being carried on that platform. So I can't listen to it now to fully review it. However, it is most assuredly a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ album that is a mandatory listen. __________________________________ 🎧 LPs reviewed: 26 🎧 LPs left to review: 975 🎧 LPs I found great/relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 7 🎧 LPs I *might* include in my own list: 8 🎧 LPs I will certainly *not* include in mine: 8

Remind me of my youth

Great album. So many good Neil Young tunes on this album. Down by the River, Cowgirl in the Sand, Cinnamon Girl, & title track are all classics.

I really enjoyed this having never heard it before. I particularly liked some of the extended jams - maybe because the music was simple enough for me to feel like I could have jammed with him! Down by the river was the standout track for me and I listened several times. Loved it!

There's so much happening on this album, such rich instrumentation (especially on Running Dry). I'm quickly falling in love with Neil Young's music in a way I wasn't expecting.

Definitely in my top 5 favourite Neil Young albums...

Holy fuck. How have I never heard this before??? Phenomenal and will be listening on repeat, but it's 5 AM and I haven't slept so that's as detailed as this review is getting. very tom petty vibes traveling wilburys but maybe its the other way around. Either way Neil Young Ate here

Favorite Tracks: Down By the River Cinnamon Girl Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere

Man this album just had me in a trance, I kinda forgot to take track notes haha. This album is exactly the kind of stuff I listen to and is an easy save to my library for rotation. Probably keep my eyes open for a vinyl!

Takes me back to mellow music that spanned folk and rock.

Good but I preferred the stuff he did with Bill Crosby, Stan.D.Stills and Kate Nash. 4.5

Liked it have heard before.

Loved it!

As a Canadian I don't think I'm allowed to speak ill of this man, as I'm pretty sure it's against our constitution. In any case, this album was a fantastical lyrical journey where the music enhanced the story that was created in each song. The songs flowed really well together.

Vibey Delight

A classic

Neil young’s music is great. Just wish he wasn’t such a bitch of a liberal whiner. Shut up and sing asshole.

I loved this album! Great vocals. Loved the lyrics too. Round and Round and Down By the River were my two favorites.

The famous guitar jams are good. When you hear a full on Neil Young guitar solo for the first time it's a nice experience. I wonder what that would have been like when this was released. Current era, the title track is the standout for me. music: appreciated. (⌐■ ̮ ■)

Know this one, knew it rules. Thought maybe a 4 star, by virtue of it not being my absolute favourite Neil. On note solo in Cinnamon Girl convinced me not to be so precious.

i am a bit biased in the fact that i already love this album. i will admit, towards the middle section the songs are a bit lesser, but i think on the strength of cinnamon girl and cowgirl in the sand this album is a 5 alone. everyone likes to poke fun at the one note guitar solo but i fear you are not a fun person if you don't think it's sick.

Great country vibes! Some bangers, some good songs. It's a strong 4.5, today a 5, some other day might just be a 4. But today is what counts!

If nothing else, this project getting me to finally sit down and listen to Neil Young will have made it worth it. Harvest was my first experience with him and it was an incredible album. This is so much different but still fantastic. Round and Round felt like a clunker and I was surprised by the extended solos, but I'll be throwing this into the rotation too. It's such an unabashedly simple album. The playing is tight but not showy, the lyrics are underdeveloped but it feels intentional. It feels like music that just poured out of the band. Even though I had never heard any track before I already feel like this was music that just always existed and one day Young and Crazy Horse were able to pluck them from the either and record them for us. Looking forward to continuing to discover more of Neil's work.

Weird and wonderful and not "too much madness is too much sorrow" but actually a near perfect mixture of both (if one likes that sort of thing). The country debauchery and insanity on "Down By the River" and "Cowgirl In the Sand" feels Faulknerian or Flannery O'C-esque. The layered vocals on "Round and Round" are pure haunting. One loves the expansive and unhurried solos, they add to the sense of menace and decay – they themselves seem ready to wander off the rails.

Truly enjoyable! Neil and Cray Horse rock and the album is an example of why he remains a true Rock icon. Sit back and enjoy!

I feel like I'm turning into my dad. I LOVE this.

This was an incredible listen. As a Canadian I've always enjoyed Neil Young and respected him. But have never listened to an entire album. Other than the opening track I never heard any of this and it was great.

I love Neil, but his music not being on Spotify is a real drag. Having trouble finding this album to listen to. This is Neil's first album with Crazy Horse, I think this is really the "start" to Neil Young. This album is incredibly fierce and frenetic. Neils vocals are full of energy and despair. The opening riff of Cinnamon Girl is powerful. Neil conveys an incredible amount of longing and sadness on Round and Round. Down by the River is the first signature "Neil Young" song. At almost 10 minutes in length, Neil unleashes some masterful solos that he has become known for. A true jam that you get lost in. Cowgirl in the Sand, the final song on the album, is another fiery track. Distorted and ferocious. The dichotomy between Neil's soft vocals harmonies and the screaming squeals of his solos makes for truly incredible song. The looseness with which Crazy Horse plays with, while still being able to hold an infectious rhythm, gives Neil an extraordinaire pallet to solo over. His unrefined quality is what makes him so unique.

Neil Young has released an insane amount of albums during his career and even to this day he records and releases them at a consistent pace. Along with Dylan, his albums range from good, listenable, bad, horrible, weird and even a few classics. Everyone Knows...is one of the best and established Young as a talented songwriter and guitarist along with his stellar band, Crazy Horse. Three of his most important songs are on this record, Cinnamon Girl, Down By The River and Cowgirl In The Sand, and the guitar interplay between Young and Danny Whitten, sets the standard for rock guitar jamming. It's not all great, but this might be Young's greatest moment on record through his otherwise uneven career.

its the Codfadder of Grunge eh

Lots of recognizable hits

Peak early rock Neil and crazy horse. Strong emotive lyricism and playing thru out.

First things first, this album was not available on Spotify at the time of listening. That being said I never really listened to Neil Young so this is my first time giving him a chance and wow was I spellbound. Running Dry was one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard, so full of emotion. I thoroughly enjoyed this album and would recommend it to a friend 4.6/5

cowgirl in the sand.

Smell the Horse! Everything about this works. 4 classics (the 3 obvious ones plus the title track). I love the sloppiness on those 4. Round and Round would be the best track on 15 of the other NY+CH albums. Absolutely a 5.

What an amazing, perfect album. The guitar work, featuring the contributions of the legendary Crazy Horse is absolutely masterful. It sets an extraordinary ambiance, capturing the essence of late 60s rock and folk that’s hard to resist. Neil Young’s distinctive voice (Dylan’s like), along with the occasional appearance of the violin, adds a unique and captivating dimension to the music. Cinnamon Girl and Down by the River are gems

incredible... some of the best country rock I've ever heard... just wow

Hello Cowgirl in the Sand

Well, its probably one of the most iconic Neil Young albums. Cinnamon Girl and Down By The River are classics. Fun crazy horse stuff. Overall, good album.

I've always liked Neil Young. Going through the other albums popping up on this list so far, my taste has been confirmed. He may not be the best singer or guitar player, but that isn't the point. This guy can make some very meaningful music that seems to swirl around in some hypnotic way. Some of the jamming feels a little half baked, but this is absolutely perfect to chill out to.

My heart sank a little at the thought of another album from a CSNY member but my goodness this is a doozy. Young is in fine voice, making a mournful, maudlin sound, with the energetic band creating extended riffs that really groove. A great rock record.

Brilliant album favourite track Cinnamon Girl & Down By The River. Not a bad track on the whole album.

Finally! After a stretch of being served up 60s-70s rock I either appreciate but don’t connect with (Elton John) or straight up dislike (Led Zeppelin) I was beginning to feel like I had a knee jerk negative reaction to boomer music, but then Neil came along to reassure me that no, I love some of this stuff. I never owned this particular album so there are a few album tracks that were new to me, so even better.

Awesome deep textured music from Neil Young. Vibe = floating in the deep end of a pool or lake. Lying on your bed listening with your headphones on after you come home from a wild coming of age outing with your closest buds right before you all graduate high school and go to separate colleges. 10.23.23

Catchy Riffs, Vibey as fuck, Neil Young hat bock auf Mehrstimmigkeit und quängelt noch nicht. Teils Grunge-Elemente - absoluter Glücksgriff 5/5

Love this! Raw, explorative and spastic guitar solos. Crunchy catchy riffs like Cinnamon Girl. Love Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, underated track. A few snoozer moments. But Cowgirl in the Sand and Down by the River Alone make this album a great listen.

Best Neil album

Pretty much the Neil and Crazy Horse template for the next 50 years, particularly in Cinammon Girl, Down By The River and Cowgirl in the Sand. So yes five stars.

A go-to bonfire/camping album, one of my favorites and a great album to start this thing with. 5 - All-time classic

Loved it so much!

Excellent, exciting diverse

Incredible. Right up my alley. Can’t believe I’ve never listened to Neil Young before.

This was truly great, I enjoyed every track all the way through.

I dug this the whole way through. Great album.

Listening to this was a religious experience. I wish I had been listening to this for my who life. But I have it now.

Fantastic album. "Cinnamon Girl" is an incredibly strong start, whilst "Down By The River" is the true gem. Wonderful, wistful, and melancholy. Essential listening.

A real classic! Some really impressive work from Neil considering it was so early in his career.

This record encapsulates everything there is to love about Neil Young. I’ve found myself on this listen really appreciating the album cuts and the lyricism. Close to perfect in my book. Just a phenomenal combo of so many disparate genres, I love it.

This is a strong 4.5 star album for me. Rounding up for the sake of the group.

Unable to listen to album without upgrading to Spotify Premium! Album contains the classic "Cinnamon Girl", "Down By The River", and "Cowgirl In The Sand" (all of which I have on the "Decades" album). Classic Neil Young.

This is an easy one for me. I'm a big Neil Young fan and love this album in particular. Crazy Horse is sounding great on this one and everyone is just locked in to the more jam focused songs. Standout Tracks: Cinnamon Girl, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Round & Round (It Won't Be Long), Down By the River, The Losing End (When You're On), Cowgirl In the Sand

i’m a sucker for neil young, this isnt my favorite album of his but it’s still pretty excellent

Now that's what I call an album, opens strong with Cinammon Girl, an excellent track, and we finish with Cowgirl in the Sand, also excellent. This is an album I would happily play on repeat. The only negative is that Mr Young and his skewed morales means that we can't listen to his music on Spotify.

I loooove me some Neil Young

64 of 1001 Neil Young with Crazy Horse - Everybody Knows This is Nowhere Favorite Track : (It is all one long beautiful song) Rating : 5 / 5 Masterpiece could be too strong of a word, but I'll go there. This is an amazing album. From start to finish. From "Cinnamon Girl" to "Cowgirl in the Sand" and everything in between. I've gained a refreshed respect for Neil Young, recently. Hearing this again reminds me that is not wasted.

First album with Crazy Horse. 5 of the 7 songs have become Neil Young standards - Cinnamon Girl, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Down By The River, The Losing End, & Cowgirl In The Sand. 100% Classic

Crank it up!

The greatest album, by one of the greatest rock guitarists and song. writers!!

Oh yeah, this is great. Not a Neil Young album that I was already familiar with, however I _love_ Type O Negative's cover of "Cinnamon Girl" and it turns out the original slaps almost as hard! 🤘 Felt the need to give this a third play through, bumping it up to a 5. Fave track - "Down By The River" is great, as well as the aforementioned "Cinnamon Girl"

Not on Spotify. But I absolutely love Neil young.

Finally, a Neil Young album I enjoyed! Only taken about 6 goes. Cinnamon Girl is a good start, nice and Byrdsy, the collaboration with Cros makes sense. Echoes of this sound elsewhere on the album too. The longer songs are great, particularly down by the river. I can hear the influence he's had on other bands I like more closely reflected in this early album of his, I kept hearing the Green Pajamas here and there. Overall great. I now need to listen to it on some decent cans. The war with Spotify meant I had to stick it out my phone speaker sat in a glass, with annoying adverts.

Young Neil kicks ass always

Another classic selection So many great songs here, several long pieces that are just amazing This album is such a genre bender, from hard rock to country, to something like ‘Running Dry’ that has a sea shanty drone to it. Then step back and consider how much music Neil Young has created over the years and it makes this album even more impressive

Just a great album. It rocks, its got iconic epic jams. It has some beautiful countrified ballads. One of Young's all-time best. 5 stars

Neil Young brings such a relaxing vibe. Good album.

Amazing record, Neil Young's first solo album. Love every song on it, pure, raw rock gold.

9/10. I've been enjoying my Neil Young albums lately

As I've gotten older I've come to really love Neil Young and appreciate his talent. He writes beautiful songs. And when he sings in a soft, gentle way, his vocals stir up wistful feelings of nostalgia for a life I never lived. His music, especially the deeper cuts, evoke a delicate and exquisite ache of transcendence. You can close your eyes and momentarily leave your own place in time to go somewhere else spiritually. So few artists are capable of inciting that feeling in a listener. Neil does that for me, effortlessly.

The beginning of an era. Still going on.

Full of good and sad songs

Killer. I loved this so much. Seven songs jam packed with emotion and passion and variation. This album gives you a good idea of how Neil Young is heralded as such an icon.

On album number 194, we've got our first Neil Young album. The man has 9 albums in the list. The probability of avoiding Mr. Young for the first 193 albums is roughly 17%. Actually higher than I had expected. With Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Young kicked of a 3 long album stretch of unheard quality. While this is my least favorite of the three, it's still an iconic album with an iconic cover and an iconic backing band. The title track is Young at his best, 'Round & Round' showcases his classic wailing vocals, and the guitar sound on 'Down By The River' is crystal clear while still being desert-dirty. The closer 'Cowgirl In The Sand' always wins me over and cements why the record is often mentioned in the same breath as After The Gold Rush and Harvest.

The fact that I find this to be the superior of the three albums spanning “Everybody Knows This is Nowhere” to “Harvest” just proves Young’s incredible ability for songwriting. His voice is as beautiful and emotional as ever on this record and Crazy Horse delivers just what’s needed of them. And while having two songs fill up almost half the record might seem daring for the genre, Young knows just what he is doing.

I am so immensly sad that Neil took his music off Spotify becouse he is so incredibly good and deserves even more praise imo

Well this album is damn near perfect. One of my favorite Neil albums which means one of my favorite albums as well. The title track has found it's way on so many playlist, such a perfect pop song. Plus the 2 long play songs, Down by the River with Neil and the late Danny Whitten trade off guitar solos over Billy Talbots sleepy druggy bass lines, it's so good.

One of my very favorites. Completely raw, like it was done at a home studio in a single take, but also very delicate. The falsetto and backing vocals combo on "DBTR", "Cowgirl" or the title track give me the chills every time

One of my all times already! So happy to revisit this one.

PREFS : Cinnamon Girl, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Round & Round (It Won't Be Long), Down By the River, The Losing End (When You're On), Cowgirl in the Sand MOINS PREF : Running Dry (Requiem for the Rockets)

sonzeira muito nask, grande bluesman

Neil Young’s first collaboration with Crazy Horse. I loved this record. Really raw country-tinged rock, with some long jams here and there. Records like this really planted the seeds for grunge music further down the line.

Really enjoyed this, particularly Cinnamon Girl, Down by the River, and Running Dry. Nice snappy album.

For some reason, I haven't listened to that one as often as the other big Neil classics of the first half of the 70's. That's certainly not because the album isn't as good. On the contrary. There are no lesser moments on this, this is Neil Young at his absolute best. The onyl reason why I wouldn't spin that one all the time is because he has so much great material to choose from. Flawless.

A really great discovery for me. I still have much to discover from Neil's discography, but this one is clearly one of my favorites yet.

So happy to see Neil once more in the 1001 - He deserve every positive reviews. In repeat :)

I really love this album. I think it's his best

Sometimes one is exactly the right number of notes for a guitar solo. The start of something special with Crazy Horse, and some absolute classics that set a template for Neil Young and *many* other bands. So good, I listened to it twice in a row :)

Easy 5. I wasn't always a fan of Neil Young, but this is the album that hooked me, where it finally clicked how brilliant the man is. It's easily my favorite Neil Young album, and for my money, his most perfectly realized work. Young strikes a balance here between his trademark grit and some really lovely songcraft that few artists are able to do. This is just his second solo album and he hits it out of the park, revealing his incredible depth as a musician and expressiveness as a vocalist and songwriter. His ability to move from prickly and dark to warm and introspective is effortless and enthralling. Every song on here is a gem. I could go on all day, but I think I'll just go listen to it again. Album was not available on Spotify, but is easy to find on YouTube. Fave Songs (All songs, from most to least favorite): Cowgirl in the Sand, Down by the River, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Round & Round (It Won't Be Long), The Losing End (When You're On), Running Dry (Requiem for the Rockets), Cinnamon Girl

Down by the River' i 'Cowgirl in the Sand'. Apart, li donava temps a deixar-nos altres mostres d'orfebreria més breu però igual d'inspirada a 'Cinnamon Girl' i el tema que dona títol a l'àlbum

Awesome album, cinnamon girl, down by the river, cowgirl in the sand

Somehow I’d never heard this whole album. Growing up on classic rock radio I’d heard the singles. But they make a lot more sense together. This record feels ahead of it’s time. From the opening notes it’s hard to believe Cinnamon girl was released in 1969. Listening to it today, the extended meaningless solos on Down By the River are a real test of patience. DBTR almost ruins this record for me, but Cowgirl in the Sand saves it. That initial punch after the intro blew me away, and then the first solo is so much more purposeful than DBTR, and the band grooves so hard off it. By the time the second solo comes around I’m ready for something off-kilter, and now the manic energy of it makes sense and lasts just long enough. When the lead blends back into the verse playing a sweet distorted melody, it’s pretty much perfect. As it fades out, I’m ready to play it again.

Un classique, j'adore neil young 5/5

How could I never heard about this album before? This thing slaps!

aivan todella kova levy! erityisesti loppuraidan kitarat jää raikaamaan päähän. 5/5.

It's sad this album is no longer on Spotify since it's an absolute banger. Although I slightly prefer the live versions from 4 Way Street, this still absolutely rocks.

Track 2 “Everybody Knows This is Nowhere” is probably my favorite. Very nostalgic, kind of melancholy. I already had “Harvest” downloaded making this my second Neil Young album. I’m liking him a lot more than I thought I would.

It's Neil. It's great. Loved every second of this album - it's got a bit more rock than folk to it I feel.

This was a solid album, a great mix between country folk, rock, and a hint of Americana. I enjoyed all the songs, they all kind of hit you in different ways.

Masterpiece

beautiful

Good shit, man.

Awww yeah.

Neil Young at his gritty best, self-righteousness and all.

Don’t like round and round I get lost in down by the river. Great riff.

Just a top notch album. Helps that it has my fav song by Neil ... "Down by the River". A classic in all ways. A-

classic

When you compare this LP to Harvest or After the Gold Rush you can see the transformation of Neil Young's sound when he played with Crazy Horse. The production is sludgy and the playing is loose, more like a live recording. I like it when they say that many "long-time concert favourites" came from an album. These tracks usually weren't released as singles and the only way to determine that they drove album sales was to go and witness the live audience reaction after the first few notes. In this case we have Down by the River & Cowgirl in the Sand that fit that definition, not to mention Cinnamon Girl, but that was a single and not 10 minutes long. Fortunately for us, due to CanCon, we heard these songs more on the radio than the rest of the world.

I listed to Neil Young’s self titled debut before this, and like, I really like Neil Young’s music, but sometimes the way he sings deadass sounds like Carl Wheezer still I really liked both the debut album and this one this album does have some songs I didn’t really like but the grand majority of the album slaps and I think it makes up for a mediocre song here and there overall 9/10, a classic in folk/rock history

The best Neil Young album on this list so far. Great variety of its songs, wildly ahead of its time in some parts.

Classic country rock! Down by the river and Cowgirl in the Sand are staples of the genre for a good reason. The fantastic guitarplaying and Neils voice makes you wonder how the last 8 minutes of the song passed within what felt like seconds. Even after a second listen of this album it really leaves you breathless at times. This might very well be the best of Neil Young (and Crazy Horse) and deserving of the 5-star rating.

Jean in a convertible at main gate lol

Amazing

Love this album. Great sound and alot of great songs in here.

Primeiro.

Five stars right up until the fucking fiddle started on Running Dry goddamn it Neil why you gotta do me like that. Loved the guitar playing on Down by the River. Nah giving it five stars anyway

Classic

Hello again, Neil. I already said what I had to say about you.

Maybe Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, but if this is nowhere, that is where I want to be. It is the best album of Neil Young. As Neil has made so many classic albums, this one is really special. Of the seven songs of this album only "Round & Round (It Won't Be Long)" is a good song. The other six songs are even far better and all classics. Also the performance of Neil and his band is of the highest level. His vocals on "The Losing End (When You're On)" are his most fragile ever and the guitar work on "Cinnamon Girl", "Down by the River" and "Cowgirl in the Sand" is legendary.

A 5-star album, easily: it is one of these absolute classic albums on the list and one of these timeless albums that stay good no matter how many times you listen to it. Very influential, but most of all: great songs. Of course, the two 10-minute songs stand out but the other songs are very strong too (except for Round & Round even though it still fits).

Great blend of folk, country, and rock. Young's vocals are not the greatest, but they have character and work well within the vocal harmonies. The excellent guitar work, supported by a strong rhythm section, really draws you in and makes this album a pleasant experience overall.

I MEANNN. This is not my first time listening to this album. It is solid and it is fairly hype but not TOO hype because Young has a pretty chill voice. Good guitar and background music.

Classic

wonderful album, love it

Neil Young is a legend. Great Folk album

Flows beautifully, great songs

Classic Neil! Love this album!

Una joya, que excelente disco

Love it

This is the album that established both Neil Young and backing band Crazy Horse as forces to reckon with.

Yup. This would make it onto a list half as long

Nice album.

One of my favorite Neil Young albums. Ragged perfection.

Behagelig rock

Neil Fucking Young. Nuff said.

A classic. Possibly a little bit underrated despite having four of his absolute best songs.

Excelentes músicas, consigo me ver ouvindo de vez em quando, quando estiver cansado de ouvir as mesmas coisas. Melhores: Cinnamon Girl, Down by the River e Cowgirl in the Sand. Pior: Round & Round.

neil young is my spirit animal

A classic.

Great album

Classic young, but fun

Probably my favorite of the three I’ve heard so far

It’s Neil Young and Crazy Horse. What the fuck am I gonna say? 10/10

Solid! The slow jams are less memorable, but the rockers deliver.

Rock clasico sesentero pero muy facil de escuchar, muy agradable así como de mañana de domingo. Me lo he pasado bien.

I find that I oscillate in my opinion on Neil Young, but I was pretty into this album. Some really good country rock songs. Favorite Songs: Down By The River, Cowgirl In The Sand

I'm pretty much at the midpoint of this project, and one of the biggest revelations has been discovering that I like Neil Young. I've had four albums by him so far and enjoyed them all - maybe there's an album lurking in the last 500 or so on the list that will remind me why I always thought I wasn't that keen on him.

yeah, I just got 3 of my favorite albums in a row.

Got annoyed by having a 3rd Neil Young album as I can't say that I enjoyed the first two. But to my.surprise I liked it quite a lot. I blame Stockholm syndrome

Amazing folk with a bit of rock album! Amazing collab and i loved every second of it!

2/9 Young albums and so far they’ve been in chronological order. 1969 was one hell of a year for music.

Круто

Neil Young makes beautiful, sort of weird and sad music. This album is no different, but once you get past his voice it's quite wonderful.

Nicely encapsulates the duality of Neil Young sort of being raw, gritty and nasal but also melodious, gentle and lovely almost by turns. Sometimes overly loose and rambling, but it has a pleasingly ragged immediacy and there are no bad songs on it.

if you took the best bits of this and ‘Harvest’ you would have one of the greatest records ever recorded. as it is, this is still very very good. ‘Cinammon Girl’ is one of those songs i could happily loop forever (and the one note guitar solo is SO good), ‘Down by the River’ is an ultimate earworm, and the open tuned guitars on ‘Round and Round’ are gorgeous. there are clunkers elsewhere, but overall it’s such a warm record, a very pleasant listen.

A solid album with some highlights in Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand.

seems like we're never going to run out of neil young to listen to... this is neil young's second album, but the first album to be recorded with rock band crazy horse. many of the bigger songs on this album were written when young had a fever. i can never get mad at all when i listen to neil young. there's something about his voice, there's something about the way he performs that makes a lot of people, myself included hypnotized. you don't hear a lot of riffs and plucks that sound like neil's. this is arguably the first album where he'd started his trademark way of writing rock music. i'm not sure if this one sounds notable enough to me compared to his other work, especially some of the big albums from him i've heard in the past, but if you're longing for something simple, something singy-songy, something a little fluffy... i think you'd enjoy this album.

As a new Neil Young fan, thanks to this very generator, this was a pleasant surprise of a record. It's not exactly what I was expecting, but it does make sense. I'd say it's a little more Americana than I appreciate on a couple of songs, and right before I groan there's some musical work by Crazy Horse that just completely overshadows any potential negative impact. There's a lot of extended solos, a lot of melodic dialogue, and there's an energy that they're playing off on each track and it feels pretty to hear them build and release. 4.1/5

pretty iffy on neil young, but i really liked this actually

Some really great songs on here, Neil Young top class as usual, with crazy horse 🙌

I like how it looks like the dog is pooping in the album art. Really nice easy listening.

Better variety than Harvest moon. More Western style because of Crazy Horse. Top songs Cinnamon girl, Everybody knows this is nowhere, The losing end. Least favourite: Running dry, Cowgirl in the sand

one of my biggest vinyl trade in regrets. I didn't care for Cinnamon Girl when I first heard it but this embodies a great rock n roll spirit. Maybe the biggest Neil Young record in terms of connecting with me personally outside of Rust Never Sleeps. May become a 5 star with time but hope to add it back to my collection someday

I really enjoyed this album, and love Neil Young. One thing I did not love was the lyrics to Down By the River. We e have too many murder suicides in society as it is, but the guitar work was sublime. Solid 4.

Nice chill vibe throughout. 4/5

Amazing album. Loved the length and the music.

This is an album full of raw energy, a far cry from Neil's debut album which was poor compared to this.

Something about Neil Young's voice is always going to make me happy.

I'm not much of a Neil Young fan, but damn this was really good. It's got 'Cinnamon Girl' and 'Down By The River', but I actually liked the closing track 'Cowgirl in the Sand' the most. This had a much heavier sound and more of a rock and roll feel than the other two Neil Young albums I've listened to so far, which were more in the folk genre. If not for one bad track, this would have been a perfect score, but it's really good and I'll be listening to this one again. Strong 4/5

This is a Jett five for me. Leads me to believe that there actually is something to Neil Young that maybe I haven’t noticed before

4 sterne

Good artist, not fave album

Big fan. Have listened to a lot of Neil young but hadn’t heard this one. It was great.

I think this one could be a grower for me, but I’m sort of torn between finding some of the ballads quite uninteresting (and part of this is absolutely not being adjusted to enjoying Neil Young’s voice properly because it’s my first time really listening to an album of his), finding some of the rockier tracks perfectly fine additions to the overall sound of the LA counterculture scene which has other bands doing other things I like more, and then moments where I can hear the seeds of a bunch of later alternative music I love in the sort of easy deconstructionist thing Neil Young wants to do with all this fuzzy jamming and pushing songs to 9 or 10 minutes and things. It’s cool for a debut, and it might be cooler if I come back for more over time, but for now, good solid middle. Edit: listened to it literally once more and bumped it up because, unsurprisingly, I was kinda with it a bit more

Second Neil young album if you count the first CSN album. I like that one and have high hopes for this one. Really good guitar on cinnamon road. Also really good vocals and writing. Everybody knows has another awesome guitar on it. Not as catchy but another good song. Awesome harmonies on round and round. Just good song writing all around. Very emotional song. Guitar on down by the river 🔥🔥. Dude just has a really good voice. Catchy chorus on this one. Solo is simple but so effective. And it just keeps on trucking along. What a song. I could listen to this guitar for the rest of my life. Losing end is good not great. The songwriting is really good it’s just missing something with the production. Good guitar solo tho. Just a little too cowboy for me. Really cool violin on running dry. This song is sick. Another awesome musical solo. Really nice opening to cowgirl. I like doing the solo first. Good songwriting again on this one. And the guitar is good from end to end on this album. And that’s with none of it being very complicated at all. With that being said he turns it up with the guitar after the 5 and half min mark. Again, what a song. Love when a record closes with a great song. What a fun listen all around. Again I come out thinking Neil young lives up to the hype. That’s hard to get me to believe. No obvious skips. Felt way faster than 40 mins. 4.4/stars.

That’s a crazy fkn horse

I'll go 4, though some of the songs dragging on got me edging towards a 3.

I only know a few of Neil Young's albums (Harvest, After the Gold Rush, and Deja Vu as CSNY), but what I've heard of him I really like. He's my kind of melancholy folk music. This one is another win for me. So far Young has not missed. He's prolific, though, so I'm sure there's some albums I'll dislike This ain't one. Consistently enjoyable throughout.

So many songs I already knew from listen to Neil Young greatest hits etc.

i like it icl

Great! The sound created was so amazing and even though there were long songs they were sick

Pretty fun

I've had a lot of Neil Young on here already and I'm never sure how I'll feel about his albums as it's not totally my thing. This one is really good though, opens with Cinnamon Girl which I already knew and liked, then stays good.

he's a wackadoo, but great

This is my third Neil Young listen of the list. It's a good classic rock album, but doesn't really do much to transcend that. Young has written some great songs, but they aren't on this record. I feel like Young is usually at his best when he goes more introspective, and this record has some of that but not a whole lot. The guitar playing isn't particularly virtuosic, but it serves the songs as well as you'd expect. I actually quite like Young's voice, so that isn't the problem here. It was clear that his songwriting still needed some work, but this is still a good record if not a great one.
