Popular Reviews

Homogenic by Björk

It is ridiculous to suggest Bjork deserves a fifth album on this list. Her output is not radically different from album to album. This suggestion gets 1 star - not as a reflection of the music but because of the damage such self-indulgent fandom does to the variety of the list.

10,000 gecs by 100 gecs

I'm in my 50s and I just don't understand this. 2 would be condescending. 4 would be patronising. Have a 3 and my confused gratitude for suggesting something I wouldn't have otherwise listened to. I feel old.

Moffou by Salif Keita

This is my recommendation and, firstly, let me apologise that this album is a bit difficult to find. I didn't realise that when I submitted it and I suspect his low profile may have something to do with why Salif Keita, the 'Golden Voice of Africa'., was overlooked on the original list. In fact, the whole of West Africa had fewer albums on the list than Elvis Costello. If you're unfamiliar with this album, what I hope you'll hear is both the region's distinctive sound and instrumentation, combined with a fusion of Western influences that makes this music accessible. The opening track features a duet with the fabulous Cape Verde singer Cesaria Evora. It's a love song in four different languages so I think it's fair to say the listener isn't supposed to understand all the lyrics. I specifically chose Salif Keita because he was my gateway into this sound. The traditional influences are stronger in his music than other regional artists, right down to the distant hint of the Blues on some tracks. I hope you like it.

Out Of Time by R.E.M.

In defence of the original list, it's very difficult to choose which REM albums should be included bhecause they're all consistently good. This one does feel like a big oversight though.

Crystal Castles by Crystal Castles

I can't take much more of this list. Really, I can't. It's been like 4 years. And then I get 'Canadian electronica' - whatever that is. Oh well. Just one more... And then it's just amazing. Thanks for a great recommendation. The quest continues!

This was perfect on a misty October morning in England.

A really nice album. It lost a bit of momentum in the second half but amazing how good it sounds over 25 years after its release.

An interesting listen, but not one that resonated with me unfortunately.

Hang on.... is Christian Rock a genre somewhere?! Crazy. Well, three stars for that education. The music is nice enough, but a bit underwhelming.

Ultra Blue by Hikaru Utada

5 stars for suggesting a music genre that should definitely have been on the original list.

I think I made a similar point about Prefab Sprout on the original 1001 list - sometimes there is a price to be paid for giving your band a particularly stupid name. Minus a star for that. Now I've actually listened to their music they certainly very good.

Two and a half minutes in and it's a 5... 43 minutes and 35 seconds in and it's still a 5. Just brilliant.

Piñata by Freddie Gibbs

Chet by Chet Baker
Nov 22 2024

Jin my humble opinion azz albums are a bit of a rabbit hole for this list because it's a whole other world of music. Still, there's no question that this is a five and a great listen. Thanks for nominating it.

Game of Fools by Koritni

There's being late to the party - and then there's turning up 20 years after it finished.

All Hail West Texas by The Mountain Goats

It's just a tragedy that such a talent didn't get the opportunity to fulful so much potential. Mind you - if you're going to produce just one album, this one on its own is a worthy legacy.

Kick by INXS
Dec 05 2024

1987. Prince's Sign o' the Times; George Michael's Faith; The Cure"s Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me; the Smiths Strangeways Here We Come. Amid this musical feast INXS were just plain white bread, and yet they seemed so pleased with themselves. Omitting them from the original list was clearly a deliberate snub, and one that I can relate to. But then again, the original list included the appalling Hysteria by Def Leppard, also from 1987, and even I'd have to say INXS have suffered an injustice

Currents by Tame Impala
Dec 11 2024

A perfect album. The only way it can be improved is to listen to the last track (New Person, Same Old Mistakes) at 1.25 speed.

F♯ A♯ ∞ by Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Dec 13 2024

Brilliant. Thanks for the recommendation.

Yeti by Amon Düül II
Dec 14 2024
Afraid Of Sunlight by Marillion
Dec 19 2024

Well this is intriguing. I was a huge Marillion fan as a teenager in the 80s. My walls were plastered with their album posters. But got into other things before this album came out. I now find their earlier work rather hard going, but this is much mellower, but with distictive Marillion sounds. I think I might get into them again. Thanks for recommending!

Dimanche à Bamako by Amadou & Mariam
Dec 20 2024

Such a fantastic album. West African music deserved a few more places on the original list

This is fantastic. 5 stars for the music and an extra star for the album cover.

After Hours by The Weeknd
Feb 25 2025

The music is interesting but these are just the most insipid lyrics I've ever heard.

Emotional Mugger by Ty Segall
Feb 27 2025

To add to an existing observation here: to me, this sounds is like Marc Bolan singing Syd Barrett songs. I love it.

Songs Of A Lost World by The Cure
Mar 01 2025

Sometimes it is possible to go back - if only for a little while.

Sing To God by Cardiacs
Mar 02 2025

Mar 27 2025

So I'm about 1,250 albums into this list and the finishing line keeps creeping further away. I'm handing out quite a lot of 3-stars these days. The music is good, but I'm jaded and tired... ... and then come across this fantastic album from an artist I've never heard of. Thank you for recommending a real treasure. You give me the strength to go on.

Stop Making Sense by Talking Heads
Jun 01 2025

I was going to give a 3 for suggesting a live album by a group who already has a few albums on the list... but then I listened to the album... and it's an obvious 5.

I'm not a Country fan, but I appreciate the excellent lyricism on this album. I also think the original list would have benefit from a couple of extra Country albums, so this is a good suggestion.

Thunder And Consolation by New Model Army
