1001 Albums Summary

Have heard Mr Blue Sky before - classic song. Not the rest of the album though. Going to listen on a walk. Immediately a vibe with Turn to Stone! Still a vibe at Sweet Talkin Woman. Happy, upbeat tunes with sad lyrics? Really liked this! Added it to my library. Songs all sounded similar but not necessarily in a bad way (like Jungle has a distinct ‘sound’). Vocals were similar to Queen and sounded a bit Matt Bellamy-esque in a few songs. Would rate this 4/5!

Don’t usually listen to music from before the 80s, enjoying though! Good vibes. Some fun guitar solos, guessing pretty influential for that. Enjoyed it, not something I’d go out of my way to listen to but solid album. 3/5.

Interesting - something I wouldn’t listen to at all but immediately like the vibe. Afrobeat album from 2009, only 4 tracks but each by is about 13 mins. Afrobeat - Nigerian music genre combining African music with Jazz/Soul/Funk. Enjoying it as nice background music, wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to it directly but not disagreeing with it!

Always heard of Simon & Garfunkel but never actually really listened - American folk rock duo. First song is Scarborough Fair, surely this wasn’t by them? Yeah it’s a traditional English ballad, often sung using Dorian mode and refrains resembling “parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme” (name of the album). Nice vibes so far, relaxed & easy with nice guitar/tones. 4/5 - was erring between 3 and 4 but I enjoyed it’s relaxed nature and a few of the songs were quite enjoyable. The last song reminds me of a few that we get these days where it’s a song interlaced with news bulletins or similar (Muse and Dimension have some).

No idea what to expect from name/album/artist. Described as Alternative genre. Beck is known for experimental/lo-fi style with a wide-ranging discography. I like lo-fi/experimental so will see how it goes… It’s alright straight off the bat - some nice electric guitar and pretty upbeat. Stuck between 3/4 at the moment, not sure if it’s library worthy yet. Going with 3.

Another one I haven’t heard. Album from the 70s and genre defined as “singer/songwriter” on Apple Music. Quite pleasant - what it says on the tin really. Vocal/lyric driven songs with a sad tinge. Going with 3/5. Pleasant and not bad but definitely wouldn’t add to my library.

Another one I haven’t heard of. 2005 album described as alternative - artist is a “California misfit who relocated to NYC to become the drag queen of her dreams”. First song has relaxed, if a little somber, vibes. Her voice is satisfying - Apple Music describing the “androgyny” coming through and can see what that means. I think I’m gonna go with 4/5 on this - maybe on the lower end but I like the vibe and the vocals are satisfying. Still quite somber but not a reason to discount.

I wonder if the festival is named after this album? I’m presuming so! I’m alright with Jazz but not particularly excited by it. 3/5 - because not bad, but not so excited by Jazz to add it to my library.

Haven’t heard of them - a rock album from 2000. Quite like Rock so let’s see… I’m liking it so far - not too heavy and good melodies/vocals etc. 4/5, enjoyed this one!

Sounds a bit intense… and it’s not for me at all. Thought it would be metal but described as rock. Just was not enjoying and had to skip many songs. 1/5 as wouldn’t want to listen again.

Heard of Depeche Mode, associate them with 80s which I’m quite a fan of! Album described as ‘Rock’ from 1987. Really enjoying so far - high 4/5 so far. Just a good vibe.

Haven’t heard of this artist - described as Pop from 1985. I do like the 80s so we’ll see… Not really enjoying it that much so far, don’t hate it just meh. 2/5.

Fun album name haha, only exposure to Slade is with the Rock n Roll Rollercoaster at Disney (which I did love tbf). Not so into 70s but I do enjoy rock so intrigued to see what I’ll think… Liking it off the bat! Guitar and music is fun, not entirely taken with the vocals. 3/5, vocals weren’t my thing but liked the backing. Not a library album.

Never heard of this/them. Another Rock album from the 1970s. Liking the guitar/music right off the bat, just like the Slade album. Vocals have yet to be heard though… they’re better than Slade. Yeah much preferring this to Slade. Potentially a 4/5 library album!

Haven’t heard of these guys - described as early 80s pop. Quite a fun vibe right off the bat. It’s alright but nothing special imo, 3/5.

1970s Rock again, am familiar with the artist name but never listened. Nice sound right away. Nice vibe but nothing special so far - 3/5.

Jazz from the 1980s. Album not on Apple Music so listening on YouTube. Nice jazz so far, a little different to the type I would usually expect to hear. Nothing that stuck out to me though - 3/5.

1980s Rock - have had a lot of 70s/80s Rock lately so getting a little bit ‘fatigued’. Going in with an open mind though. Don’t hate it, and quite like the backing guitar/music. Not anything special though, vocals are okay. 3/5.

More Rock… This time from 2002 though so hopefully a bit refreshing. 1hr 33 minutes though! It’s alright, quite like the backing music. Vocals in the first one weren’t for me and it was pretty dark, but quite funny at the end. Another meh one so far. I do quite like the ironic and left-wing lyrics but isn’t enough to change my general vibe with it. 3/5

More early rock… at least this time it’s a band I’ve heard of. The first song (Gimme Shelter) is recognisable and good though! Actually liking this one quite a bit, finally a good suggestion after a bit of a slump. 4/5 so far.

Heard of Pulp, not the album. Defined as Britpop/Rock from 1995. I’ll probably recognise a few songs. Liking it off the bat :) definitely liking further into it - recognise common people. 4/5, added to library.

Classic album, dad always played this in the car. So many brilliant songs that I love and feel a bit nostalgic as well. Described as alternative from 1995. 5/5.

Well I definitely know this band haha, and recognise a lot of the songs. Don’t hate listening to them but also wouldn’t add them to my library. 4/5 for the vibes.

Know Elton John, not the album - only know the song Tiny Dancer on the album (which is a banger tbf). Not massively into Elton John but listening with an open mind. 3/5 so far (although Tiny Dancer is added to library)

Another Bruce Springsteen album, wasn’t a fan of the one before so will see what I think. So far, better than the last (the USA one). Maybe a 3/5?

Heard of the artist, but not the album. This has ‘Come on Eileen’ though which is a classic. Like the vibe right away - so far a potential 4/5 library add.

Heard of the fall I think, not the album. Indie rock from 1979. Chilled vibe at the start. Vocals are a bit annoying - starting to grate on me actually by 3rd song… and had to stop listening. A high 2/5 because I liked the guitar but vocals totally ruin it.

Not really heard of this - Rap from 2005. Not usually a rap fan so going in with open mind. Sounds nice straight away, like the vibe. Quite enjoying. 3/5.

Definitely heard of Slipknot, had a friend who used to love heavy metal. I’ve never been a fan though so expecting a quick decision on this. Trying to go in with an open mind though, might have changed my mind as haven’t tried it for a long time. Actually quite enjoying the intensity and guitar sounds straight off the bat. Never liked the vocals/screaming. Vocals definitely not my thing still, but quite enjoy the rest of the music… might have to put it as a high 2/5.

Not sure what to expect from this, Brian Eno rings a bell for some reason. Collab album from 1981. Electronic. It’s not bad, it nothing special either. A low 3.

Not heard of this - 1hr 45 min album that’s live on Apple. Will see about this. Pretty vibey right away, definitely 70s rock. Got a bit bored after a while but didn’t hate it. 3/5.

Heard of ZZ Top but couldn’t name or him any tunes. “Hard rock” from 1983 - doesn’t sound too hard off the bat though. Quite enjoying. A low 4/5.

Rock from 1988, haven’t heard of them. Doesn’t sound super rocky on first song, but quite enjoying the sound… quite enjoyed on the whole. A high 3/5.

Not sure I’ve heard of them. Another “Hard Rock” album from 1987. Not sure what makes rock ‘hard’ - apparently driving melodies, few ballads, guitar solos, loud drumming, vocals near to shouting/screaming. Quite enjoying so far. Another low 4/5 - not adding to library but enjoy hard rock clearly.

A mix-up. “Pop” album from 1998. Haven’t heard of the album but described as an important album for women and POC that defied the materialism/misogyny that was normalised at the time. Excited for this one. Enjoying it so far. Low 4/5 as enjoyed but not in library.

Heard of Aerosmith but never properly listened. Makes me think of the Rock n Roll rollercoaster that I loved as a kid at Disney. Enjoying it off the bat. Low 4/5.

Heard of Queen and heard of this album. A fun one to start the day. Bohemian Rhapsody is an absolute classic. 4/5.

Has the right kind of vibe. Quite enjoying this - had my kinda cynical vibe lol. Not quite uplifting but enjoying on the whole. 4.

Quite good right off the bat - sounds a bit like Damian Albern/The Gorillaz. Because it is, it’s a mix of him and people from Blur/The Clash! I’m a fan of this, adding to the library.
