Great flow and delivery, cool beats and sampling. Feels very ahead of its time.

5-Star Albums (235)

Regardless of what you think of the music, you have to admit that Steven Tyler raped and battered a 16 year-old when he was 25.
I had never heard of Happy Mondays and had zero expectations going in, but I really liked this album. It definitely sounds of a time, but in many ways sounds relevant today as well. Fat White Family seems like the closest modern contemporary. An unusual but catchy blend of dance and '80s pop rock, Bummed is great for repeat listens.
I fell in love with this album not too long after its release. Beautiful, haunting melodies and what complimentary vocals between the band members, leading to some great harmonies. Christopher Bear's percussion is tight, often propulsive, and alluring and Chris Taylor's bass is a great current, unifying these tracks. For me, this one's a classic.
1-Star Albums (7)
All Ratings
Solid through and through, haunting, tortured and catchy piano tunes. Highlights - Sleep to Dream, Criminal.
Seems like an instant classic! Fresh ideas 45+ years later and clearly influential.
Ambitious and varied, if a bit overlong.
I'm not much of a fan of The Edge or Bono or U2's sound in general. That said, this is still a solid album.
Low-key grooves, fresh, modern easy listening. Highlights include Sexy Boy, Kelly Watch the Stars, Talisman, New Star in the Sky.
I've listened to several Bowie albums, but somehow this one had eluded me. Somewhere in the vein of '70s rock and disco/funk-tinged prog, Station to Station is a compelling listen start to finish. Golden Years is of course a well-known single, but I also really enjoyed TVC15 and Stay.
It's fine.
It's an interesting listen, if tiring and overlong. The album opens with "Apache," which is such an influential and prominently sampled track, though nothing else quite matches it for the rest of the nearly 80-minute duration.
Love it - old school sound with cool and unusual samples and beats from DJ Premier plus Jeru the Damaja's unique style.
Rollicking! I wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did, but either Stewart's vocals have grown on me, or they are a particularly good fit here (or both).
Somewhat singular in its sound, but there's no denying that there are some catchy songs here. For me, standouts include Mystic Lady and The Slider.
Excellent, varied, catchy
Competent and pleasant — a blend of '80s new wave, synthwave, and psychedelia. Kind of one-note, though.
I love this album. Lyrically impressive with a great flow, great samples, cool jazz influences. An instant classic.

Blur just isn't my favorite. There's some cool songwriting here, but I don't care for their sound.
I'm not enjoying these vocals. Train Song is very cool, though.
A lot of great tracks off of this album. Billy Joel is at the top of his game.
I had listened to this album some time ago, and I appreciate it more now than I did then.
What a please to be assigned this album today. This was something I had on repeat back when it was released. Every track is a banger!
Has some great songs, but it's a strange choice to insert vocal clips with such a short runtime.
I have to be in the right headspace for The Mars Volta. This album seems ambitious and technical. The end result isn't especially listenable, imo.
Do you like pasta? If so, you might enjoy all the noodling here.
What a weird, varied, and fantastic album.
A masterpiece
My first two-star album here. Generic brit-pop with cheesy lyrics based on dopey rhymes.
Of a time and also very relevant today. Public Enemy sounds focused in their messaging with great delivery over excellent sampling.
So much cheese
Great flow and delivery, cool beats and sampling. Feels very ahead of its time.
It's fine for background music. I find it strange to have this on a "must-hear" list. "Empty House" is a great track, though.
Terrible flow and beats. I'm just awestruck by this album's inclusion here.
Super fun!
Now I know why Hinder sucks
Great album - really holds up almost 50 years later.
While I don't think the album is consistent from start to finish, there is still some REALLY cool stuff on here.
I'll never understand the love or acclaim for Bob Dylan. This is maybe the fifth Dylan album on this list I've endured. It's fine. Musically, I enjoy this more than the others, but Bob Dylan is still providing the vocals, unfortunately.
Music isn't bad, but the vocals aren't great, and the lyrics are terrible.
High 3
I find Lana Del Rey to be consistently bland, and this album is totally unoffensive.
While I love King Crimson, this album has never grabbed me.
Decent songs that are harmed by Perry Farrell's voice.
Perfectly acceptable
Great, a live double album by an obscure British space rock band. Muddy production, noodling, weird noses, droning vocals. Bleh.
An incredible album front to back.
Two year later, Mansun would release Attack of the Grey Lantern and, imo, really perfect this sound and style. However, this is still a good listen that has a lot to offer.
It's a good album overall, and it was the first album of theirs I had purchased. It's among the weaker Radiohead albums overall, though, or maybe right about in the middle for them.
Desire Lines is a fantastic track
I almost wrote this off completely at first. "Krautrock" really drags and not much happens in its almost 12-minute run time. Past that track, there is some cool stuff, though.
I want to give this a 1, but the album is more fun than I expected -- it owes a lot to the production and the creative use of samples.
Uninspired
Among the weaker Steely Dan albums, but still a banger
A lengthy album that keeps getting better and more varied as it goes.
They have better albums. This one didn't really stand out to me.
This isn't my favorite Residents album. The songs are so outside the realm of typical music. They aren't especially listenable, and yet, they have a way of worming themselves in for me. They're actually more concise, focused, structured and approachable than much of The Residents' earlier catalog, as if they wanted to create a sort of avant-garde pop album. It also seems like we wouldn't have gotten bands like Ween or Primus without early Residents albums like this one (or at least those bands may have developed differently). Difficult to rate this one, but I think it's worth consideration and even multiple listens, 4 stars.
The more I listen to Roxy Music, the more I don't like them
No doubt an influential album that was both of and ahead of its time. I would have loved to see where Buddy Holly went from there.
You recorded (and produced) cringe, bro.
Actually really enjoyed this as a soundtrack for the work day
Was going to rate it 3, but they closed out with that Streets of Rage sound
The thing about Suicide is they have a cool sound but their songs also kind of all sound the same and have similar structures.
The first few opening minutes had me dreading what this album might be, but I'm happy to be proven wrong. What a propulsive, dynamic, interesting electronica album.
The album starts off very weak, but there's some cool stuff later on, particularly the Portishead remix of Planet D. I'm not sure why this album made the list, though.
Holy shit. Something Phil Spector produced and didn't ruin.
Regardless of what you think of the music, you have to admit that Steven Tyler raped and battered a 16 year-old when he was 25.
I'm not sure why this made the list. Fuzzy, muddy, noisy, these are not inherently bad qualities, but monotonous generally is. The songs really run together, and nothing seems memorable here. "Getting Bright At Night" was a good track for a while, but it's 9 minutes long and about 2/3 of the way through starts sounding like everything else on the album.
So much of this album is a pastiche of African spirituals that a white man repackaged with gloss and techno, dance vibes. The ideas are thin, the loops are too long to back a simple dance number, but too short and repetitive to carry a full-length pop song. A good sample in a song is usually a fun nod, an Easter egg, an elevation of an idea or a rhythm that the artist then builds something new from. But here on many of the tracks, the spirituals feel like the entire idea, and Moby works around them. This leaves the subtext of it all -- the African spirituals are generally about struggle. Is Moby comparing his own personal struggles to those of enslaved people? Probably. Weirdly, despite Moby not having a strong voice, the tracks with his vocals are the best. Porcelain and South Side remain great songs.
I was previously familiar with John Gran and a fan of Midlake, but I didn't realize they collaborated on. I still don't particularly care for the way Grant often layers his vocals, but these are strong songs with clever lyrics.
I think these are great songs, but I think the mix is off. Harvey's vocals are quiet to the point of almost missing them.
This was actually one of my least favorite Wilco albums and put me off from listening to them for a while. However, listening now, I appreciate it more.
I really dig this. It's like touching on all these different alternative sounds from the '80s and '90s: Dinosaur Jr., Guided By Voices, Failure, Slint, Meat Puppets...
Inoffensive
I'm pleasantly surprised to see Elbow on the list. It's not my favorite Elbow album, but there are some really good tracks on here.
Cool songs hampered by bad vocals, but sometimes the results are worth it. I probably won't listen to this again, but I think I can see some influence on groups I like such as Dry Cleaning and perhaps Squid.
I used to play this album on repeat. Listening to it now, I think it's aged OK. It definitely sounds of a time. There's no doubt this caused nu-metal to blow up into the mainstream for better or worse (probably worse). Still, it's a mostly fun and angsty short album with some catchy hooks.
Great album. Super creative both musically and lyrically. It's definitely my favorite of Ye's. Now can we make sure he's getting therapy and/or medication, please?
I was really hoping for something more inspired from an album called "leftism."
I would have loved to have seen what else he could have done. What's here is a little rough, but there's no denying his powerful voice. "So Real" gets stuck in my head easily.
Incredibly diverse, unique, catchy.
Fun enough but pretty same-y throughout.
I Wanna Be Adored is such a fantastic track. Nothing else here is quite as strong, but it's still a solid album.
The list maker seems to enjoy forgettable U.K. rap. Nothing offensive here, but this didn't make my life more complete either.
An Antonoff nothing burger
A masterpiece.
Pretty unremarkable if it weren't for some of the earliest recordings of Bjork. Birthday, Deus, and Cowboy are among the better tracks.
I can't be the only one more into Solange than Beyonce.
I think this is great - sounds really ahead of its time and seems to have influenced the '90s Brit rock and psychedelia revival
Great songs, great voice, but everything starts to blend together by the end (and really well before that).
Fun background music
I love Liars, but I stay away from their early stuff. I've never been into this album. I recommend checking out any of their albums from their 2007 self-titled album onwards. I appreciate attempts to do something different, but this isn't an album I plan on re-visiting. It's noisy. It's generally unpleasant and not particularly musical.
Fantastic album and an all-time strong debut album to boot. It's hard to believe this came out in '78.
I definitely didn't need to hear this before dying. It's all pretty pleasant, though. The songs generally have a way of unfolding as to suggest a soundtrack to a nostalgic day.
Fantastic album and what a great cover
Fun, but unfortunately the album peaks early with "Genesis."
Not sure why this is on the list, but I enjoy the album
So much Nick Cave on this list.
More Britpop slop
I had a friend who put this on to fall asleep to during a sleepover. I was looking forward to listening to this, but I think it aged worse than Chocolate Starfish.
I don't know how to explain it, but this sounds like fake music.
I first listened to this in my teens. It was my only attempt to listen to Genesis, and it put me off from them. I think my brain was simply too small then.
Innocuous, but why's this here?
This guy thinks he can forgive Jesus
This is fine, by why is it on here?
Lol, what?
This album didn't click at first, but after repeated listens, I've really grown to appreciate it. 4.5 stars, rounding up to 5.
Felt like one of the longest albums ever. I'm sure could distill this down to something pretty solid. Still seems like he's trying to flex with so many songs, but they generally run together.
What if Nirvana tried to be The Beatles and sucked at it?
OK songs by a shitty guy
I think I need a cigarette and a choir of smoking children impersonating me to understand this.
A voice like Adele's deserves much better songs
Free Palestine
The Girl From Ipanema is an all-time great song, and its presence alone would push this toward five stars. And then Corcovado, too?!
Put off listening to this to re-listen to Getz/Gilberto. This is no doubt a great album, even though I'm not really in the mood for it.

Really enjoying the vibe and groove of this
Crass, juvenile, offensive, not helped by run-of-the-mill production.
I can't believe this came out in '66
Yeah, I don't get it
On their fourth Album, Kings of Leon made a conscious decision to try to pack arenas and bring in some cash, and it worked. These aren't by any means bad songs, but they aren't particularly interesting either, and it's strange to me that this is on the list, especially when other Kings of Leon albums are more interesting (though still not mandatory listens).
I dunno, it's good I guess, but it also just doesn't resonate or stick with me at all.
🤨
We don't need all of The Who albums on here. This one's a fun idea, but it's basically skits with some so-so psychadelia stuffed between.
This is a well-crafted brit-pop album that absolutely does not need to be on this list
It's more white guys playing the blues 🤷♂️
I love Wild Beasts, but Smother would be the better album to include in this list.
I remember when this came out and was getting rave reviews, and I just could not get into it or even understand the appeal at all. Revisiting now, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It's complex but unfortunately not so listenable, and her voice can be really grating.
