Megadeth at their best, but their best does reveal that they'll always be a bit of Temu-Metallica. Still, Eye of the Tornado and Holy Wars and a lot of other songs are real barnstormers. The solo's are good and Dave Mustaine's vocals are really fitting into the puzzle here. It's not the very best Trash album, but it's good for sure.

It's weird. They're amazing at performing. The vocals are ehh. But the actual songs.. it's like I'm actively forgetting them as they're playing. Like I zone out while actively listening to them. I realise I've taken absolutely nothing in despite my best efforts. I think it's because they're incredibly generic, maybe because everyone copied them, but they sound so toothless and basic nowadays. But yeah, it sounds really good but I can't for the life of me remember anything about it other than that. And I'm still listening to it. It's a boring metal album. The songs are boring. They band thinks the songs are not boring, they give each song like a long brooding intro with no payoff for a song that would be a late album throwaway for another band. It's like if Guns n Roses did thrash. Bang average thrash metal with some chihuahua growling over it.

A fun little album; it did quickly became one of my thrash favorites (is that the right subgenre?). Even then, I couldn't name any standout tracks and some of it just read as noise to my ears, which are admittedly not that tuned to metal in that I can take it or leave it, but probably leave it.

Holy Wars...The Punishment Due is one of my favorite songs of all time. The rest of the album could be wet farts and I would still rate it 5 stars. Fortunately, the rest of the album is pretty great too.

megadeth megadeth aguante megadeth

Once again, Megadeth delivers unto us an album where the guitar riffage is fucking nuclear, like genuinely some of the best in the business, and then the singing sounds like he's trying to force out a shit on a red meat diet.

This suffers a bit from “I’m probably never listening to this again so it gets a 3,” but this album kicked an incredible amount of ass. The opening track and Tornado of Souls stand out. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Technical skill on display here for sure, and while I'm certainly no thrash/Megadeth fan I would prefer this greatly over another Metallica fan. I feel that Megadeth understands the inherent silliness of the genre and I think that helps them immensely.

Basically a five based just on the guitar solo from Tornado of Souls.

This album surprised me on two fronts. Having never before listened to Megadeth, this is now my second Megadeth album in 11 days. Topping that, though, was that I actually liked this one. The speed and precision of the dueling guitars and percussion is impressive, thrash metal or not. What makes Rust in Peace better than Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying is that these lyrics are pretty good.

Lots of twiddly diddly dee guitars and generic lyrics. Not bad, but not great.

This was a fun metal album. Metal’s always been a hit or miss genre with me, and this is a hit for sure. The instrumentals are hardcore, and sound creative and inspired and all that good stuff. The vocals aren’t my favorite, but that’s just how it is with metal for me. Great album, though!

rust in peace: enjoying the music and the guitar actually, i normally do not fuck with metal in the slightest

Wow, I was thoroughly unimpressed.

Metal ist nicht mein Genre

Not my thing man, but see why people love it

Another classic album that I have heard many times. The 2004 remix sucks though.

didnt finish… shredding but also im bored

Really good album not something I would listen to regularly

Energetic and interesting but didn’t catch my ear too much. It was fine.

One of the great metal albums from one of the great metal bands. Favorite track: Hangar 18

Not sure how I feel about this one. It's a fun and flashy listen but one that doesn't have any sticking power as this is one of those metal albums that prioritises speed over hooks. Also, Mustaine's voice is kinda weak compared to other metal musicians of the era, possessing neither the raw force of someone like Halford nor the beastial raws of Hetfield, and the end result is that the music sounds kinda goofy.

Really pretty good! Raw in places maybe?

Really enjoyed it

Sorry, can't

Eins frábær og mér finnst Megadeth vera þá var þessi plata bara ekki sérlega góð. Þessi fer allaveganna ekki oft á fóninn og enginn minnistæð lög á þessari plötu.

I could not wait for this to end, so stopped after a handful of tracks. Shredding guitars, frantic drums, screeching vocals....it seems like a parody of itself. Yeuch.

Not particularly pleasant. I would struggle to articulate why, but this just feels kind of brash to me, like it's noise for the sake of noise without much identifiable artistry there. To be clear, I'm sure there *is* artistry in there, nobody makes music without it. But it's inaccessible to me.

Nah. Can I rank less than 1?

A bit rough around the edges and I'm not a fan of Dave M's voice But the music is good, so I'll go straight down the middle

Good ole Mustang

Never a megadeath fan but was listenable during a workout…

It wasn't our thing

- Played in Israel repeatedly, and nothing about supporting Palestine, just found Mustaine saying "I love Israel". Also, looks like Ellefson is probably a pedo. - There is some really great guitar playing on here. - The album definitely has its moments, and I liked it better the second time through, but just like their other album on this list, I got tired of it quickly. - For me, the vocals bring it down, and it's not melodic enough to really stick with me. - Can't ever see myself seeking this out... 2.5 rounding down.

I liked this more than most of the other metal that's been on the list. The playing is impressively fierce and precise. It isn't tiresomely sexist. The vocals don't quite match up to the ferocity of the music but they're not bad. But it's still not my thing. Partly it's that the subject matter of this album, and the iconography of metal, feel a bit too adolescent-boy to me and hard to take seriously.

This is a hard album to rate. I loved the guitar and music but the lyrics really diminished that. I'd look forward to the intros and guitar solos cause they were amazing but as soon as the lyrics started, I'd lose interest. Favorite solos were from Hangar 18 and Tornado of Souls.

As far as thrash metal goes, this isn't too bad. I preferred this to the Slayer album i was subjected to, but it's not as good as the Metallica one. Holy Wars is a bit of an epic opening, and I quite enjoy the way the song builds and falls and sweeps through the sections. 5 Magics and Rust In Peace sound to have been built in a similar way, but aren't as good. Poison Was The Cure builds well and competes with Holy Wars for my favourite track. But it's all a bit too noisy and, well, thrashy for me to want to return to it. 3 stars.

Part of me forgets how much I like thrash metal, but this last also happens to have absurdly good taste in the genre (against all odds). Rust In Peace feels like a basic thrash pick, but it *is* an utterly essential one. This starts with 2 all time metal classics, then manages to include exclusively great thrash songs. Even weird interlude Dawn Patrol is tons of fun. From the epic, nimble Lucretia, to the absurdly good guitar solo on Tornado of Souls, to Five Magicks' interplay between lyrics and micro guitar solos. Exceptional examples of thrash songwriting truly abound. We also get the title track and Take No Prisoners, two of the best *Thrash* songs Megadeth has ever released. Rust In Peace is one of the best Thrash albums of all time, and it is a perfect (non-Metallica) ambassador for the genre here. Megadeth was a real force to be reckoned with during this era.

I am not that keen on his voice but the music appeals.

On the fantastic website Metalstorm, this album has the third highest aggregate score of any album (after Judas Priest's "Painkiller" and Death's "Symbolic"), and it's not surprising. Every instrument is totally on point. Nick Menza and Marty Friedman deliver career-defining performances on the drums and lead guitar respectively, while David Ellefson's bass and Dave Mustaine's guitar are in fine form, per usual. The songs do conform to the thrash template - but only partially. They constantly breakdown (foreshadowing the prevalence of groove in metal for the foreseeable future), and dive into unexpected musical choices (the NWOBHM intro of "Lucretia", the bluesy riff of "Tornado of Souls") leaving the listener wondering what's coming next. The only real complaint here is Dave's subpar vocals - but they're delivered with such venom that they really fit the cynical and angry lyrics. A masterclass of metal, one of the best albums ever made regardless of genre, and far and away Megadeth's best. 5.0/5.0: Iconic

what a great album.

Very much crazy rock music that I'm loving. Lyrics are too much about death for me though

Sounded like white noise through my Shokz

Inecoutable. Franchement le metal j'aimerais sincèrement qu'on m'explique

Noisy nonsense

I only listened to the opening track. I also broke my rule and read a couple of reviews before submitting my rating. Opinions differ in music.

The most positive comment I can make is that it's not a 1. 2*

Don't like this genre but hell yeahhhhh

A masterclass in thrash, especially during a time when the musical landscape was starting to change. Megadeth remained steadfast in their roots when many other bands were struggling to adapt to the new sounds of grunge and alternative rock. The 90s were not kind to a lot of “traditional” metal bands. It killed hair metal almost entirely, and thrash metal was bumped down more than a few pegs. But Megadeth was one of the bands that held on the longest, experiencing only a few minor hiccups before their resurgence in the new millennium. This album in particular is one of their best. The musicianship is hardly matched by their contemporaries. The song structure is interesting and varied, and they stick to a lot of their traditional lyrical themes of government criticism, anti-war, annihilation, and mental illness and degradation. In short, this record rips and stands out as a textbook example of the kind of masterpiece that can be created when artists are unwilling to compromise.

Canciones favoritas: Holy Wars..., Five Magics

Vocals on five magic made me laugh out loud so worth it for the chuckles

This album gets a perfect rating from me for multiple reasons. Firstly, this album was my proper introduction to Megadeth, their so-called ''prime years''. Secondly, I genuinely think that during this album, and maybe ''countdown to extinction'', that Dave Mustaine really outperformed himself, along with Marty Friedman (Lead Guitar), David Ellefson (Bass) and Nick Menza (Drums). I find myself often coming back to tracks like Tornado Of Souls, Lucretia and Hangar 18. All in all, this album is a staple in the thrash metal community for a really, really good reason.

Heard before?:❌️/✔️(not entirely) Will listen again?:✔️

Beavis: Heh-heh, heh-heh, heh-heh, yeah! Butt-Head: Now that was cool, uh huh-huh!

I'm ascending guitar Is singing to.me like a lullaby

not interesting to me at all

Still feel like an inferior Metallica to me, and a bit of a one trick pony. Virtually every song is the same pace, similar vocals, same guitar riffs.

Listens: 3 Standout Tracks: None It's weird... I liked this album a lot, but looking back at the track listing, I cannot really say I liked any particular track or that any stood out. The album seems to fly by even though its 40 minutes. The whole thing flows together really well. It's a tight, well-produced affair. I would also be remiss if I did not mention the absolute genius article by The Onion about how there's no point in making art any more because this album exists. I imagine I won't be the only person to mention this. It's a good quick laugh and actually caused me to listen to the album before even starting the List. So, I have a few listens under my belt before this album even came up.

cool metal

I don’t hate it. I think the musicianship is impressive but the vocals kind of spoil it for me.

I normally hate this kind of metal nonsense but for some reason I found myself headbanging and wanting to play F-Zero X.

Holy moly

2.5 rounded down, which I think is better than any Metallica album did

Here is my final and important opinion on this project: Megadeth is better than Metallica. Metallica was better at making money and wedging themselves into mainstream consciousness, but that’s a far less noble pursuit than being a bad ass thrash metal band. On that, Megadeth has them beat. I was going to go 4, but in the last song I thought “ha ha he says Mega Death like a dozen times in this song” so I looked it up and he was saying “rotten EGG AIR (of) DEATH” which is so, so precious. That’s what rock is all about. Anyways I would like to say this has been fun but it’s mostly been miserable. My calculated average score is 2.94 and I think that’s about right. On the whole, music gets a failing grade. There’s too much of it and most of it stinks. Finally I am free.

Damn good metal! If the basic goal of metal is to get your head bopping (thrashing), you are a successful metal band. That feeling when that guitar is furiously moving in your brain with those drums pulsating through you. That's metal! Megadeth does this well musically. Lyrically, not so much. Dave Mustaine really loves the end-of-the-world, nuclear proliferation, militaristic imagery, doesn't he? His voice? You guys.make mountain out of a mole hill. His voice is fine for metal. I know it aged like milk but still fine for metal. You should be complaining about songwriting & themes. Oh & Dave hates Metallica & wrote all their best songs & is totally not bitter about being kicked out of the band at all.

This wasn't for me at all. Just isn't interesting enough and the lyrics are silly.

I've always been intimidated by metal despite having heard and loved various metal songs/albums since I was about 12. All that to say that I don't have much to say about the technical aspects of the album or what makes it different from any other metal album. But everything about this is intoxicating to me and makes me want more. It just scratches some itch deep in my brain. I've always been more familiar with Peace Sells (and liked it more as a result) but this album is just about perfect to me. Every track tells its own story and the sound is cohesive without sounding repetitive or same-y. I just love it. I wish more albums felt this perfect.

If you don't think this is the shit then you're probably kind of a loser. In a TIGHT 40 minutes this album has about a billion different insane riffs and solos. I could listen to this for years and never get bored. And the way that the album unfolds thematically is also incredible: everything is laid out on the first song, and each progressive song feels like it takes the message deeper in a different way until at the end you feel like you’ve gotten the message ingrained into your head. Metal is one of my favorite genres mostly because of albums like this: there is no ceiling for how good this could be. So much music is hard, heavy, but you always have to stick your neck out to truly be impressed by the heaviness of it. Slayer? Megadeth? Tool? Converge? Jesus, Death???? You can’t just listen to that and not be blown away by how insane it is. It’s the kind of thing that pulls you into a different plane of existence. This album is a prime example of that. Pretty much every song is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard. This is one of the best albums ever made. 10/10 DOES IT BELONG ON THE LIST: YES REASON: quality and influence

09/24 Hell yeah. Classic album

Enjoyed this, but can't say I'm going to rush back to listen again.

Thrash metal done right. Dave Mustaine isn't my favorite metal vocalist by any stretch (his voice leans towards 'whiney' in my opinion), but this album is still one of my favorites. I think Mustaine is also one of the best in metal when it comes to writing lyrics that actually have weight and substance to them. So pair his songwriting with the sublime thrash riffs of Marty Friedman, and you have a hit record. This album is a perfect illustration why Megadeth deserve their spot in the 'big four.'

I was looking forward to this one and I'm not sure if it was just my mindset at the time, but it didn't resonate with me as much as Peace Sells. Since that one was 4, this one I'm dropping to 3, but it's a 3.5 just based on the few moments that did stand out. Just about as perfect technically as thrash can get.

No shade on Megadeth here, but there’s no way there aren’t 1,000 more meaningful albums to listen to before a second one by this band. Once again this project highlights the absolute idiocy of making a list - even a supposedly omnibus one like this. Anyway, this album kicks ass.

I think if you're an automobile technician they give you a copy of this album with your journeyman ticket. I have heard so many songs on off this album without realizing it so it was nice to have it all localized, also to experience this proper you need to hear it behind a ton of shop noise through an old stereo covered in dust. It shreds from top to bottom, if you love distortion, fast drums and face melting solos then welcome home. It gets a little repetitive but you can only thrash for so long.

An album that stinks of body odour and unwashed denim. That’s not a bad thing though! This album shreds so hard and while I normally don’t really go for heavy metal I definitely dug this. Plus that album cover is sick as frick

Decent thrash album. Not the best but far from the worst.

This morning we'll be Metal Thrashing Mad! This is a good one. It isn't the best that Thrash Metal had to offer, but it was the most popular at its time.

I think I like thrash metal. Fast, technically skilled. Moody and angry. I just think it’s neat. I can see playing this while dropping the kids off to soccer practice. Kind of a vibe.

I liked the guitar tones and riffs. The singer’s voice was grating. However, none of that matters. When your album cover is this horrendous, I can’t take you seriously.

Cauldron ingredients: - Metallica - a little extra talent - slightly cooler riffs - less originality - a few extra guitar solos - three-note melodies (pitched up) Joke's on me: this is just prog disguised as heavy metal. Nice try! Get outta town!

I like this better than I thought I would

The Onion might just be right The only skip on this for me is Dawn Patrol, but even that has an incredible bassline and it serves as a great intro for the last song. #relisten

Great solos, excellent riffs and Megadeth's infamous "so stupid it's awesome" style lyrics.

Didn't think I'd like it but here I am

I always enjoy the drumming more than anything else with metal. Always hard to critique lyrics about aliens. I just can't relate to finding an alien and keeping it frozen in a hanger, as I keep my frozen alien in the shed.

Amazing guitar work. Fast and heavy but still really clear. Great album!
