Mega-nope.

Thrash metal? More like trash metal amirite?

i can't say i was a fan of this one, it was a lot of noise for my hungover car ride let's say 1/5 because of my hangover, if i wasn't deathly i'll i probably would've enjoyed this more and probably given it a 2 or 3 bc there were some good drum parts but def not my thing

This man likes... ellipses. Great technical playing, I really don't enjoy the vocals though.

Don't think I could make it through to the end of this thing. Pretty much the worse thing I could be given to listen to.

It's fucking good. Fast, intricate, awesome. The guitars slay

Guys will look at stuff like this and say "hell yeah." I'm guys. Hell yeah.

Probablement dans mon top 5 de métal. Tornado of Souls.

That snarl!

Masterpiecr

I’m so glad to see this album come up – it’s arguably one of the best metal albums of all time (particularly thrash metal). I have so much love for this record – Mustaine, Friedman, Ellefson, and Menza struck gold when making this. Opening with two of their biggest songs, “Holy Wars...The Punishment Due” and “Hangar 18” starts us off with a bang. Mustaine’s vocals may be hard to take for some but they do perfectly suit the band (I mean Dave basically IS Megadeth) – not that I’m diminishing the huge contributions of the other members there’s been, he’s just the driving force. If you’re a lover of faster, heavier metal this really does have everything. The fast tempos, insane shredding, great lyrics and storytelling, amazing riffs, intensity, and technical songwriting. A shout out to Marty Friedman’s unique solo capabilities – particularly “Tornado of Souls” which is highly regarded as one of the greatest metal guitar solos. Easy 5/5 for this big metal fan.

Greattttt guitar solos. One of the greatest metal albums of all the time

Favorite Megadeth album. Banger after banger.

One of my favorite metal albums

There's been a lot of bullshit albums being suggested over the past couple of weeks. I genuinely like Rust in Peace, but relatively, this feels like Bach or Beethoven. Mustaine has an ego the size of Jupiter, but he has had a hand in 3 of the "Big 4" of American thrash. He does have some merit. This is my favorite Megadeth, with some good variety without losing quality, which is the issue with other albums. Great opener, stays strong throughout.

Excellent album, probably their best. Holy Wars, Hanger 18, Rust In Peace. Fantastic solos, super fun music.

Megadeth was never my band of choice—mostly because Dave Mustaine’s vocals always sounded like he was halfway through an argument he absolutely intended to win. But Rust in Peace is one of those albums that forces you to admit, “Okay… fine… these guys are ridiculously good.” I didn’t get into their music until much later. When I was younger, I pretty much avoided the heavy metal scene altogether. I liked the riffs, sure, but the whole obsession with death, demons, and “stick it to your parents” energy just wasn’t my thing. And honestly, none of it would’ve made it past the front door of my very conservative Christian household anyway. I would’ve been grounded before the first guitar solo finished. But with some distance, all that edgy imagery feels more theatrical than threatening—like a Halloween store that never closes. Once you get past the theatrics and pay attention to the musicianship, the talent doesn’t just come through—it ruptures the speakers first and then bleeds through them like it’s trying to make a point.

Holy shit this album just grabs you by the throat and aurally beats you senseless. This album was released when I was fully in the pocket of my metalhead years and it's still phenomenal 36 years later. It's opening track is the high point and though the rest of the tracks never reach that pinnacle again, they really do hold their own. This is just a hell of a lot of fun to listen to. The musicianship is top notch and they were firing on all cylinders.

Onion article sums it all up.

Hangar 18 is insanely good and the rest of the album holds up as well.

> the Beatles See, Dave, you make incredible music. It's time to stop crying about getting kicked out of Metallica

Better Han Coldplay

Maybe the best metal album

Incredible

I’m devastated that teenage me never heard this. This album fucking rips!

Метол 🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻

Is it Megadeth's best album? Yes. Probably the last great Classic era Thrash album too.

Tornado of Souls is definitely a tune on this album! Awesome album cover as well.

Mustaine is certainly a one if a kind guy. Voice, style, guitar. This is near to peak Megadeth

Nice. This is easily the most I’ve ever enjoyed a thrash album. I love metal in many forms, but thrash has been hard to love. It’s something to do with suspension of disbelief; it’s pretty silly music. But for most of this album, I was able to buy in easily. It’s got great musicality. I love the vocal harmonies on “Tornado of Souls,” for instance. I also feel like, for as many shreddy guitar solos there are on this thing, a lot of them are distinct from one another, which is a happy surprise. Excellent metal album, adding it to my pantheon as the thrash representation. Must-listen #336.

This album is delicious! The guitar tones have a magnificent color of vintage gear that pairs brilliantly with shredding virtuosity. The drums are deep and punchy, the energy is cranked up, I had an absolute blast listening to this album! I think one of the vocalists sounds a little like SpongeBob lol. This records getting saved and listened to again and again.

"Humanity Still Producing New Art As Though Megadeth’s ‘Rust In Peace’ Doesn’t Already Exist" - The Onion, August 3rd, 2015 (I recognize I'm not original in referencing The Onion article, but its honestly the best review of the album and while I'll add my thoughts, they're honestly pointless when that article exists) That headline is a joke, but it's honestly not far from the truth. Rust in Peace really is close to the pinnacle of thrash metal from the 80's. In my mind, the only albums competing with it are ...And Justice For All, Reign in Blood, and maybe Master of Puppets (I'll have to listen to it again, but I remember thinking the second half of the album did fall in quality), with Reign in Blood being the only one that actually gives it a run for it's money in my opinion. Of course, there are other great thrash bands like Coroner but they never got big enough to be on the same level with the likes of a Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax. But yeah, this album is just a riff and solo machine. Trying to find another album that comes even close to this thing off the top of my head feels like a fool's endeavor. Every song just crushes, particularly stuff like Holy Wars...The Punishment Due, Hangar 18, Lucretia, Tornado of Souls, and Rust in Peace...Polaris (Which is 2/3 of the track list, and the other 1/3 is still great). The soloing on songs like Holy Wars, Hangar 18, and Tornado of Souls is close second to none, every riff is a winner, the drumming is frantic but great. It's just insane. And while Dave Mustaine isn't the greatest singer, his nasally, high pitched tone works extremely well with the music and lyrical topics (Usually conspiracies, politics, and whatnot). And the album is just damn fun compared to Slayer's ultra serious-ness and Metallica's more every-man blandness (And I don't necessarily say that as a dig at them. It works well for them. They're the Mario of thrash metal). Just an all around masterpiece of the thrash genre. Honestly might be my favorite thrash album, but at the absolute worst, it's top 3, and it's not close.

right up my alley mate, guitar riffs are insane

Loved it! The vibe was great and the guitar solos amazing

Saying that any further endeavors of technical skill and imagination were pointless, experts at the Smithsonian Institution reportedly questioned Monday why new art was still being produced after the pinnacle of aesthetic and creative potential was reached in 1990 with Megadeth’s fourth studio album, Rust In Peace. “As the unquestioned apex of the entire history of the creative arts, Rust In Peace is the finest and last necessary piece of human expression—but it’s almost as though current so-called artists are completely oblivious to Dave Mustaine’s blistering, transcendent guitar work on ‘Hangar 18,’” said Smithsonian curator of contemporary art Joanna Marsh, gesturing dismissively in the direction of a massive self-portrait by photorealist Chuck Close, completed in 2000. “It’s not just incredibly disrespectful to keep making art; in many ways, it’s actually quite sad. The deluded people churning out this worthless garbage just can’t seem to reconcile themselves to the fact that their pathetic little sculptures and films and novels and whatnot will always pale in comparison to the brilliantly inspired, heart-stopping tempo shift halfway through ‘Holy Wars… The Punishment Due.’” At press time, a spokesperson from the Centre Pompidou in Paris confirmed the museum’s plans to throw out the contents of an entire wing and leave a massive, pure white space where the track “Lucretia” will be played on loop at full volume.

If it's riffs you want then it's riffs you're gonna get with this album. Vocals are a bit crap but what can you do. They're not the main focus here so they didn’t take much away from this for me. Fav Songs: Holy Wars...The Punishment Due, Tornado Of Souls, Hangar 18 Least Fav: Dawn Patrol 9.2/10

Got to see Megadeth perform this in full twice. Kinda all went downhill from there tbh

An absolute thrash classic and easily a top 5 all time metal album. Several of the several dozen wicked guitar solos from Hangar 18 started swirling in my brain as soon as I saw this come up. Dave Mustaine is for sure insufferable in many ways but he was born to embody this band and bring together some of the best shredders and shredding in history. The Onion wasn't writing satire on this one.

I can't really do better than The Onion: https://theonion.com/humanity-still-producing-new-art-as-though-megadeth-s-1819578062/ It kills me that I wasn't listening to any of this back in the day. I would have been a much cooler kid.

I mean, the Onion captured it best: "Humanity Still Producing New Art As Though Megadeth’s ‘Rust In Peace’ Doesn’t Already Exist" (https://theonion.com/humanity-still-producing-new-art-as-though-megadeth-s-1819578062/) This is both epic and silly ("Dawn Patrol," which I keep thinking of as "Paw Patrol"). Musically it slays. Mustaine's vocals were never the attraction, and his lyrics are...of their time and genre, but thematically in the right place. I bet George H.W. Bush and Gorbachev saw themselves on the cover and had their MINDS BLOWN, DUDE.

Mega rad

One of the greatest metal albums of all time. Dave killing it here.

I got nothing smart to say about this. The lyrics and songcraft are meh but the musicianship is so damn good I kinda' don't care. I've never given Megadeth a listen before; I'm actually really impressed. I did not know they had this kind of technical skill. I like it. -Edit: In the weeks that have passed this has become my go to "office too loud for ambient" focus music. Drowns out the lawyers in the next row who don't understand how to modulate their voice volume without requiring too much of my attention. +1

Woah - taken by surprise by this. Never listened to Megadeth before, and all the metal albums I've had suffer from letting the drummer show off, and letting the guitarist show off when they don't add to or even fit with the song. That is not the case here - it is all proper songs and the guitar solos actually work with the rest of the music. The first two tracks are amazing, the rest don't quite live up to them but still go insanely hard.

Wonderful

5/5 Essential thrash/heavy metal.

If all metal sounded like this I would be a metalhead. This album kicks ass. Fantastic. Great mix of shredding and dynamic changes. Interesting vocals keep you invested. Drumming and guitar are absolutely top notch. 5/5.

This is the most guitar anyone has ever played.

Best metal album ever

I didn't think I'd get the other Megadeth album in the books only two and a half months after getting Peace Sells, but here we are. Rust in Peace certainly carries a lot of notoriety in the Megadeth discography as the first album with the "classic lineup". Not only do we have Dave Mustaine and David Ellefson, but also Nick Menza on drums and Marty Friedman as lead guitarist. Those two additions contribute to the elevated thrash sound. While the guitar riffs and popping basslines continued to fly, the double-bass drum work of Menza added that extra oomph, and Friedman's neoclassical playing stood out against Dave as they traded solos. There is genuinely relentless musical virtuosity throughout, particularly on cuts like "Hangar 18", "Take No Prisoners", "Poison Was the Cure", and "Tornado of Souls". Even when the momentum slowed down for a bit on the ominous bass-thump of "Dawn Patrol", the performance was still commanding, and it helped that the production was crisp enough to hear every note. Along the way, Dave continued his focus on socially conscious lyrics. The album is bookended with two distinct perspectives on war - "The Holy Wars...The Punishment Due" from the view of a relentless soldier in the midst of religious conflict, taking dues from The Troubles in Northern Ireland and The Punisher comic book character; "Rust in Peace...Polaris" from that of a nuclear warhead launched with the intent to wipe out humanity, with the fallout foreshadowed in "Dawn Patrol". The rest of the content included the likes of alien conspiracies on "Hangar 18", supernatural encounters on "Five Magics" and "Lucretia", the dissolution of a relationship in "Tornado of Souls", Dave's former heroin addiction on "Poison Was the Cure", and the double standards of armed conflict on "Take No Prisoners". No punches were pulled in his words, with the sort of striking imagery that stuck in mind alongside the fierce instrumental compositions. While Peace Sells did an amazing job at putting Megadeth on the map, it was Rust in Peace that showcased the true potential of what this band had accomplished.

While I enjoy the times I've listened to Megadeth, I was wonderfully surprised with how enthralled I was with this. Instrumentals that were well written and simply fantastic to the ear. And high vocal quality packed with an extreme dosage of adrenaline.

Megadeth two days after Metallica. A project destroying deal-breaker for some, I would imagine. I, however, have a genuine soft spot for wonderfully composed, expertly executed, brain-meltingly speedy thrash metal. The softest of soft spots. I softened continuously the whole time.

I LOVE YOU HANGAR 18 and tornado of souls and holy wars i suppose

I'm going to to drop this here. https://theonion.com/humanity-still-producing-new-art-as-though-megadeth-s-1819578062/ It's legitimately one of the best metal albums ever. Has to be top three if not top two. It's Mustaine at his peak.

Killer solos in Holy Wars and Hangar 18. I love thrash metal and I'm a huge Metallica fan, so I think I was always in the "Megadeth Sucks" crowd. However, I'm digging this album so far. I mean great riffs, Dave's vocals aren't mickie mouse, and the solos are chefs kiss. Really liked this album. downloaded a good amount of songs and would relisten.

Metallica if they stayed good after 1988.

Warning: DO NOT DRIVE TO THIS ALBUM! This is a high-octane speedrun of an album. The first track starts off fast and the whole thing does not let up. Even when a song backs off A LITTLE it's just the spring winding up. The songs are interesting, sure, and the lyrics are tight. It's a go-go-go album. My Rating: 5/5

Man, every time I listen to this record it grows on me more and more. It kicks a ridiculous amount of ass, the guitar-work straddling a beautiful balance between technical proficiency and outright catchiness. That's not to diminish the other elements - both the bass and drums are done to perfection - and Mustaine's singing does as it needs to. Not nearly as offensive as people claim it to be in my eyes.

Oh man, 15 year old me LOVED this album. I still dig some thrash metal here and there and 80s/90s Megadeth absolutely ranks. My musical tastes have expanded since then and 37 year old me expected to be somewhat bored with this particular album, but nope. 5/5 this album absolutely fucks.

Dave Mustaine will forever "rather be in Metallica," the band that gave him the boot so long ago, but he made some great metal in his own right by simply feeding the demons that festered in his broken heart with all his envy, resentment, and bitterness. His jealousy and recrimination were a spark — his yearning for validation was its own striving of sorts. Obviously unhealthy and a little unhinged. And yet, while he coveted their success, it somehow, and this really is the twisted genius of it all, cleared the way for Megadeth to create a compelling dark shadow to the other more popular M-e-consonant-vowel-consonant-patterned giant in the scene. Mighty Marty Friedman shines in his debut with the band. And although Megadeth is perhaps more overtly cartoonish and juvenile, I've come to appreciate the band I used to dunk on back in the day because it's also partially those qualities that endear me to them now. This record only deserves 4.5 stars at most by my ear but I'm rounding it up for Dave's perseverance and as a lesson to us all that while we can "get what we want" we're not in control of how, when and for how long we do.

Rating: 10/10 One of the best thrash metal albums of all time.

Awesome album Standout songs: Take no prisoners Lucretia Tornado of Souls

I think I've discovered my favourite thrash metal album. There's not a single dud on "Rust in Peace". The praise for this album was completely deserved. Coincidentally, I got "Rust in Peace" a few days after Megadeth released their final album. I'm glad I didn't get another Bob Dylan album. 5 stars for "Rust in Peace".

Listening to this 35+ years after its release, it seems pretty clear Mustaine's a crazy-eyed prophetic madman who was way ahead of his time in the subject matter he was writing about. Cover art unbelievably poignant and applicable (bonus points for including actual world leaders, including H.W.). Also, listening to his rhythm parts in stereo, he has the precision of a Swiss watch. It would never have worked for him to stay with Metallica (one egomaniac too many)...and it says a lot that they kicked him out for being TOO much of a drunk. I've never been a Megadeth fan, but this shit rules.

So, so good. It would be timeless if Dave Mustaine could scream instead of that weird low voice thing... I think this album is still a 5/5 despite that though.

slight exercise in separating the art from the artist here. i've met dave mustaine three times, none of them even in the context of being a fan, and i think he's just a real turd in his soul. real mean guy. knows what he's doing though this shit is incredible. hangar 18 is one of the best metal songs ever, holy war some of the best riffs, and the rest of it is all at least solid. they also keeps their guitar wankery to a sensible level (for them) on this one.

Perfect album

If You like fast paced metal You have to at least try it. I have ignored Megadeath for years. Now I'm glad I have listened it.

Tätä levyä on tullut kuunneltua jo 35 vuotta ja löytyy omasta hyllystä. Tämä on ajaton klassikko ja todella hyvä levy. Oma suosikkini Megadethiltä. 6/5!

I waspretty much a Megadeth virgin in that Id never listened to an album, they were just on as a track here and there. Oh have I missed out. Late to the party but I loved it.

It's another "fuck yeah" album for me. Give me any of the big 4 any day. I don't listen to them for ages but when I do, I get hyped and love them more than the last time. What I especially like about Megadeth over the others is that I can 'sing' along to the guitar. In fact, I can't help but do it. Weeeeeeoooooohweeeenuhnuhhyeeeeeee dudududu dudududu duduludduh duh duh duh dududududuuuuuuuhhhhh.

I'm more of a Metallica guy, but damn, Mustaine can make some good ass tunes. 4.5 bumped up to 5.

I’m at a 5. Perhaps a bit higher. Just like “Peace Sells… But Who's Buying?”, that is a total ball of energy, though this time, it feels written with a bit more purpose. A lot of the more demonic energy of that first album is replaced with some political / anti-war sentiment, some aliens, some medieval magic, some drug usage, some ghosts in the basement, some broken hearts, & seemingly a bit of nuclear warfare. The variety of the lyrics here makes for a more engaging album past “really fucking sick guitar / percussion work”, but those are both still here in spades. This album finds a really good balance between lyrics & energy, and it maintains both pretty well to keep it up for the full 40 minutes. I guess if I have any minor nitpicks, it’s that the flow of the album feels a little off despite the more focused tracks; I’m not saying there had to be transitions or anything, but some tracks really draw out their endings while others just kinda hard stop, & that push/pull feels disconnected at points. My other super small nitpick is that Dave’s vocals feel… weirdly, too noticeable sometimes. I’m not saying he should blend in & have zero presence, but his voice occasionally sticks out when he’s in a higher or lower pitch than normal, and it draws the attention towards him. Sometimes it really helps a track (“Tornado of Souls” comes to mind), & other times, it just sort of took me out of the rhythm for a brief beat or two (notably on the last track). Overall, there’s not a single miss in the whole 40 minute runtime here, & it’s certainly one of the best thrash metal albums we’ve gotten so far. It’s definitely a 5, if not higher, but I’m not quite at a 10 with it on account of occasionally losing that rhythm / sync. Needless to say though, this could easily get there someday. The acclaim is justified here; this is a very, VERY good album, and its best tracks feel like they’re in a pantheon of sorts. Whatever metal albums we get next have a higher bar to clear after both Megadeth albums we’ve gotten – they’re that good, and I’m very glad they made the list.

One of the best metal albums of all time.

Visceral and electric, the album makes me want to thrust my thumbs in a SWAT agent’s eyes after exploding unseen out of a ventilation shaft

Brilliant. Creative. Genre defining.

One of the greatest metal albums of all time if you can get past Dave's voice.

Well, what can I say besides acknowleding the fact that this is the best thrash metal album ever written. Bravo.

Thrash metal is my element, and this album absolutely rips. This sits right in the middle of an insane run Dave Mustaine had from the late 80s into the mid 90s. This being the first album with Marty Friedman was huge. You could make a strong argument that he’s the best guitarist out of Megadeth's many guitarists, and his playing all over this record backs that up. The riffs are sharp, the solos are wild, and nothing feels wasted. I also love how several songs have two "acts". Holy Wars turning into Punishment Due, Rust in Peace flowing into Polaris, and Hangar 18 just going on an absolute tear. The song lengths are probably a turn off for most but I think that’s part of what makes it great. If someone wants to get into thrash metal, this is absolutely a must-listen. Favorite songs: Holy Wars...Punishment Due/Rust in Peace...Polaris/Hangar 18

Great album!!

Finally, we get an album that belongs on the list of albums you must hear before you die. Rust In Peace may be the album I’ve listened to the most in my life. It was, with Extreme’s Pronografitti, one of the first two CDs I ever purchased. And because CDs cost around $20 back then, for a 16-year-old Lee, I listened to those two CDs until just thinking about them gave me what the kids call, the “ick.” I burned myself out so bad, it was years before I could listen to Rust In Peace from beginning to end. Rust In Peace was the fourth studio album by Megadeth, and for me, it was a major step up from their previous album, So Far, So Good, So What? Those first three Megadeth albums, while great, were lacking a bit on the production side, or at least that’s what I thought when I was a kid. I later realized that those albums were likely a bit under-produced to give them a more punk sound. At that time, thrash metal was looked at a bit like it was technical punk. It was loud, fast, and gnarly, but most of the musicians loved metal as much as punk. So, thrash was what came out when they played what they were hearing in their heads. The production value on Rust In Peace was a bit slicker, but the music didn’t lose the pure ferocity that Megadeth songs had. The giant chip on the shoulder of founder/lead singer/lead guitariest/songrwriter Dave Mustaine ensured Megadeth would produce incredible face-melting music until he felt he had at least risen to the glory his former band, Metallica, had. Rust In Peace, for my money, put Megadeth on par with Metallica and their next album, Countdown to Extinction, was every bit as good and heavy as Metallica’s Black Album. When I first heard Holy Wars/…The Punishment Due I’d never really heard anything like it. It was just pure aggression. I wasn’t really fully immersed in thrash metal at that time, but Metallica was my sherpa leading me through the valley of thrash with their earlier albums. I had heard Megadeth songs, like Peace Sells and Wake Up Dead, but their music was a little more grimy, dark and sarcastic. And it sounded like it was produced in the bowels of a steel factory. Megadeth songs always have great lyrics, be they political, religious, or about conspiracy theories. Hangar 18 is about UFOs and aliens. Plus, it just plain rips. Beyond Holy Wars/…The Punishment Due, Hangar 18 is the most known of the songs on the album, and it’s about the Troubles in Ireland. I think Rust In Peace is in the top 5, maybe top 3, thrash albums of all time. Megadeth is part of the Big 4 in thrash metal, with Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax. I’d vote for Megadeth as number 2 on the list. If you haven’t heard Rust In Peace, it’s an album you must hear before you die. If you’re not a heavy metal fan, go in with an open mind. Listen without judgment and just bask in the riffs and the solos. It’s like jazz, man. But, if it’s a bit too much for you, Countdown to Extinction is a little more toned down, but still a very metal album. It’s Megadeth’s Black Album and probably a good gateway to enjoying more of their catalog.

Super album! Masterpiece!

brabo demais e eu só conhecia holly wars

Metal came to me in my '20's. I wish I spent more time hanging out with the kids in high school who listened to this.

I listen to this at least once a week. Dave Mustaine was fuckin on one

This was my number 5 album on Spotify wrapped this year.

Mostly, this album just flew by, as it is very consistent and the same tempo and dynamics the whole way through. However, I was impressed with how much I did like it, and I do want to go back to it, sometime. As far as thrash metal we've had on this list, I personally think this is much better than Anthrax and more consistent than Slayer (who has my favorite songs in the genre but other songs that don't hold up as well).

One of the best thrash albums. Good times.

Amazing Ground breaking

Rocking

The review that links to the Onion Article about this album may just be the greatest review on this entire website. Dave Mustaine has a unique, iconic voice, and I will absolutely accept no slandering of his vocal performance on this album. He really adds something special to it. This is EXACTLY my tempo for an album. When I want to play true Metal, this is the kind of thing I’m talking about. Same reason why Metallica is going to get a bunch of 5’s. This is one of those albums where you can just take your pick for favorites, and it might change daily. There’s so much to love between all of the songs, but god damn are the hits amazing. The riffs on this album are some of the juiciest pieces of ear candy I’ve experienced with this project so far. This is one of those albums I have actually heard 1000 times before, which always have a bit of favoritism when I’m ranking these. That being said, I love this band, so it’s easily getting a 5 from me. Favorite songs are “Holy Wars…The Punishment Due”, “Hangar 18”, “Five Magics” and “Tornado of Souls.” This album is Metal as hell, it’s extremely goofy, and most importantly it just kicks so much ass. I haven’t even mentioned the album art yet. This might make the podium for best album art with all the funny political figures rallying around Vic Rattlehead messing around with an alien and some kind of glowing artifact thing. Uranium maybe?? Don’t know. Regardless, goated album. I even have another one to look forward to at some point.

One of the best metal albums ever released. Blazing speed with incredible musicianship and a meaty sound that is unrelenting but not oppressive. Very accessible for casual listening, and plenty of depth to appreciate for repeated plays. A magnum opus for one of the biggest metal bands

Awesome album. Consistent theme, incredibly tight. Guitar work is phenomenal! One of the best thrash albums of all time, easily

A thrash metal masterpiece. The addition of Menza and Freidman made probably the greatest lineup Megadeth ever had. The songs themselves are incredible, from Holy Wars to Polaris, with Tornado of Souls and Hangar 18 in between. 5/5

Kerry King, notable guitarist of the band SLAYER, recently said that he prefers Metallica over Megadeth because "Metallica has a singer". I read that (literally yesterday) and it made me think more about Dave Mustaine as a singer and how some vocalists have a sound that is objectively just kind of different, and it takes some getting used to, and how prevalent that is. There's many amazing bands over time that have this in music, one of the more notable I can think of is Guns N Roses; Axel Rose has a weird mousey screech but they have written some of the best rock songs ever. Would Megadeth be better without Dave Mustaine singing? I don't think so, just like how I think part of the allure of Guns N Roses is that characteristic vocal style of Axel. It's unique and it makes the overall sound a more special package. This album is fucking amazing, and I'm so glad it's included in this list. I wrote in my review for "Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?" that I really hope "Rust in Peace" was also on the list, and it seems my wish has been granted. The two opening songs on this album are amazing works of metal art and I love that you get them immediately when you start playing the record. "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due" and "Hangar 18" is one of the BEST sequential first-and-second tracks on any metal album. As a guitarist whose wrists used to be dexterous enough to play this stuff, I can't express enough that these parts are incredibly hard to play- even just the rhythm sections. The more technical riffs? Even harder. But not just hard to perform, these riffs are everything that you would want from a thrash metal outfit- they are catchy, crisp, fun, and tasteful. The solos? Get out of here... incredibly difficult to play and so much fun to listen to. "Hangar 18" is a personal favorite of mine- maybe a top 20 favorite heavy metal song of all time. I particularly love the dueling guitar solos- it truly sounds like you entered Hangar 18 and you are watching and listening to two UFO's wildly trying to escape the base while firing lasers and slamming into walls with their otherworldly technology. This is a "deserted island" song for me, mostly because it is so dense and filled with ideas and sections that I can still listen to the song so many years after first hearing it and still find new nuances- like today I focused on the amazing bass lines! Legendary album in the heavy metal scene, with 4 amazing songs on it when you include "Tornado of Souls" and "Rust in Peace...Polaris".

Super excited to see this. Love it! I was ready to just sing Five Magics along with the rest.

Dave Mustaine is a bit of a cunt, but Megadeth fucking shreds 🤘🏻🤘🏻Such a cool album cover too. Vic Rattlehead meets The X Files

This is probably my favorite metal on here to date. Fast, ferocious, awesome grooves, and much better recording and mixing than the last Megadeth album I had. Hanger is my favorite here, probably thanks to Guitar Hero, but the whole album rocks.

An album where you can just turn your brain off and listen to some stupid Christian whacko sing a bunch of unintelligible nonsense with amazing guitar-work, solos, drum patterns that blow your face off, and of course David Ellefson stroking his bass guitar just like he strokes his cock for LEGALLY AGED GIRLS on Snapchat.

more my speed

This album came out in 1990 which was probably the peak year for early metal. So many amazing metal albums came out this year and this album was definitely one of them. This is probably Megadeth's best album. they are super tight compared to previous albums. Megadeth is probably my least favorite of the big four thrash bands but every song on this album is a banger! Easily the best album I've been served so far.

This album is fantastic. I enjoyed every single song, and the first one is flawless and a great introduction. Also, this album has so many layers that it's such a pleasure to be listening to it. I mean, I loved this!

Definitely defines an era and genre. If I was to tell someone what good melodic thrash metal was, I’d point to this album and a couple metalloca albums

If they were going to have to have a megadeth record this is the one to have. Holy wars is a beast of a song. Dave mustaine is so freaking annoying though. I hate his voice. Mustsine and Friedman can shred for sure. hangar 18 dueling solos was always so cool. I have listened to this record a million times and the 2004 remix of this and all megadeth records is fucking awful. Listen to the originals.

Excellent and good fun!

Banger

A perfect album

I really enjoyed this album, it just puts me in a good mood.

The best thrash metal album.

Love it

Listened Before? Y One of the greatest thrash metal albums of all time. Dave and the gang caught lighting in a bottle here. They were still edgy enough to be unafraid of themes of apocalypse and demons (as they were in later years), and disciplined enough to make it more coherent than the frantic stuff slayer (no hate) was releasing at the time. Added to Library? Y Songs added to playlist: Tornado of Souls

I think I forgot how hard megadeth used to be as later albums seemed to be chasing that Metallica accessible metal sound but as soon as Holy Wars started up I was cranking it up to 11 and remembering how great the early 90's was for metal before grunge took over the rock scene.

\m/ Heck yeah

Watch him become a gawwwwdddd

all bangers, top to bottom

Hell yeah 👍

Top tier thrash album, it’s hair on fire metal from start to finish.

Rust In Peace is by far the best Megadeth record. It feels more focused than their previous efforts and songs like Tornado Of Souls and Holy Wars..The Punishment Due are proof that Dave was finally emerging from the shadow of Metallica and creating great music.

How have I gone through life without listening to Megadeth! I didn’t realise I liked heavy metal as much as I did. This album is 10/10 The guitars, the drums, the lyrics and themes 👌🏼perfection I love the wild mix of themes. There is not enough songs about wizards these days

An absolute masterpiece of thrash metal. Just the first three songs could define--dominate the entire genre. So much energy, so much groove and even lyrics that are somewhat politically charged and not just singing about the same topics metal bands stick to like darknes, death and antichrist. I'm not saying Mustaine is a poet here, but at least it's something. Anyway, we're really here for the raw technical skill. Drumming, bass and man, the guitars. The solos don't stop, the riffs are on another level. My only regret here was that I came across this album relatively early in my metal phase in my teenage years in the 90s. It made it hard to appreciate other stuff after, honestly--it was so much better than the competition. Even other Megadeth albums didn't get near this level of excellence. In most genres I like, I can't name a greatest album. But in thrash metal--maybe metal in general--I never hesitate. Holy Wars is an explosion of riffs. Hangar 18 arcane dark magic. Take No Prison a speed metal orgasm built on the back of wicked drums and bass. The whole thing sounds so polished, so perfect, it's crazy. The pace finally lets up on the fourth track, Five Magics, just to come on with some arcane harmonizing riffs. Poison was the Cure comes right back with a monster speed riff. Dawn Patrol is the only slow point on the album, and it's not bad at all. Just merely a good song rather than transcendental. Clean 5/5.

Top 5 favorite metal album for me and my favorite from Megadeth. Don’t sleep on their other releases though.

You know what’s more metal than death? Megadeath! Now misspell death to be even more metal! Seriously, though, this album crushes it. Megadeth was never my kind of metal, but I can’t deny this one all the stars.

Good shit

One of the best metal albums of all time

Nothing like some 80s speed metal.

Thrash Masterpiece.

At their best

Absolutely beastly. The most perfect shred album. Killer riffing and neo classical lead playing, without neglecting the songs themselves. People who constantly listen to Megadeth in comparison to Metallica will miss the full spectrum of this record, it has it's own world.

Finally, Megadeth getting some love in the list. Of the prominent thrash acts Megadeth holds a special place in my heart. Distinctive vocals with some incredibly solid riffs. Holy Wars is a great opener that highlights their solid rhythms and ability to shift direction in a prog-adjacent fashion. Hangar 18 is built around more of a wall of sound riff, but shares in velocity and nimble changes of direction. Can't shake the feeling that the breakdown around the 3:32 mark sounds just like Walk This Way by Aerosmith. Regardless, the guitar work is wonderfully satisfying. Love the slow patient build on Five Magics. Feels a bit like Metallica's Disposable Heroes. Lucretia is built around a very satisfying riff -- love the solos and breakdowns throughout. Dawn Patrol is an interesting departure from the flashy fretwork into a pensive drum and bass interlude. Title track makes for a solid closer built to epic proportions. If you are looking for something propulsive with face melting potential, look no further. This is top tier thrash that is easy to listen to end to end. Soft 5 for me.

This album was released when I was a youthful and dedicated metalhead, but I don't remember whether I genuinely did not like Megadeth, or whether I just never listened to them on the assumption that I wouldn't like them. But I sure like this album now. Of course, Megadeth are not, and never were, a patch on Metallica, but this album is definitely worth five stars from me.

Yup... Classic Thrash based purely on hate

The album is great in everything it attempts; old-school thrash, modern grooves, technical solos, and even weirder attempts like "Dawn Patrol". Tight, focused and enjoyable.

Fuck yes megadeth

Not a big fan of the vocals of megadeath but boy oh boy is everything else top fucking notch. Blown away with the talent coming from these musicians🤟

This is a solid Megadeth record, possibly their ultimate best! It's melodic, full of pumped solos and serious guitar work. Undeniable classic! (from a MetallicA fan)

I have never been really into Megadeth for a very stupid reason. I have very slow fingers so I can never accurately air-guitar to their songs lol let alone actually play them With that said, I've always known that Rust in Peace is fucking awesome and IT IS, IT'S FUCKING AWESOME.

Alle mie palle sono cresciute altre palle da quanto è badass questo album

Easily one of the top three thrash albums ever made. By 1990, Metallica had finally exhausted their Mustaine-era riffs and were well on their way to being a radio-friendly juggernaut. Dave Mustaine keeps the promise of thrash metal alive with this set of blisteringly fast and heavy as steel tracks. A lot of people have a problem with Mustaine’s vocals, but the production of Rust in Peace finds Dave at his most snarliest. He’s never sounded better. With the exception of Dawn Patrol, this album has not even a hint of a skip. Long live thrash metal! Long live King Mustaine! 4.6/5

It was cool to revisit an album I'm already so familiar with and grew up loving - unfortunately, some songs are not nearly as amazing as I remember it but I also appreciated some of the songs I used to gloss over more than I used to so it's a wash and it turns out it's still a fantastic, nearly no-skip record. Not sure what the hell has happened to Dave politically to go from writing Holy Wars to being the loser he is now, but there's at least there's a record somewhere of him at one point being against atrocity in the world. Great album, just wish Dave wasn't such a washup these days.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this one. Normally, I've found thrash metal albums get repetitive or sound like they're going too fast. This one didn't feel that way, I enjoyed pretty much every track.

The peak of thrash metal along with Reign in Blood (Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets are great but not on the same level imo).

Awesome metallic rock with sick guitar licks. I loved it and jammed all the way through.

Now we're talking!! Some good ol fashion thrash metal!! 🤘🏽

epic metal greatness

It’s always been hard for me to take Megadeth seriously because of Mustaine’s voice. But the explosively ornate arrangements and Friedman’s guitar playing more than make up for it.

Se paras trash levy. Ekoja ceedeitä joita oon ostanut

👌🏼

infuriatingly good as always, with the caveat that ive never managed to listen to the current remaster all the way thru hjsdg. its always been the original mix/recording for me...dave sounds actually kind of tolerable on there! and its just a solid presentation of whats p close to the most undeniable material in the genre. deffo an album that deserves to be described as Blinding...the speed, the brightness, the density. there may not be a more wildly universally entertaining album in the world of techy flashy metal...just the perfect mixture of potent tightness in playing and structure while also being wild and unpredictable...ideal ratios for thrills on thrills. a height of form for thrash fs,,,tho i prefer the aesthetic palpablity of reign in blood these days

Good shit.

Fuck. Yea.

One of my favourite Metal Albums of all time and one of the few albums I regularly listen in full.

Been a long time since I listened to this one in full and I have purposely been skipping tracks on this album because I knew it would pop up on this list eventually. 'Holy Wars... The Punishment Due' for me is one of the best metal tracks of all time. Opens fast and furiously before some chimes and delicate Middle Eastern sounding guitar lick slows things down a bit but still chugs along nicely. Before you know it it's right back to breakneck speeds with some blistering solos. 'Hangar 18' is another of their best tracks ever. The whole second half is just a back and forth guitar solo duel interspersed with a fantastic headbanging riff. Probably one of the greatest opening one-two punches in the history of heavy metal. 'Poison Was The Cure' opens ominously and then explodes into Megadeth's high-speed thrills. 'Rust In Peace... Polaris' opens with some great drumming before yet another good riff. It's sung from the perspective of a nuclear rocket which is pretty odd yet pretty unique and lyrically menacing. It's probably my other favourite track other than the opening two. It's catchy as hell and surprisingly got a pretty singalong chorus. Mustaine spitting out "I spread disease like a dog!" and "Launch the Polaris! / The end doesn't scare us / When will this cease / The warheads will all rust in peace" is fantastic. Mustaine's vocals, though not perfect or technically fantastic, fit the music so well. It's like you can hear the dripping snarl behind every word. He sounds pissed off and I will always love him as a vocalist. The guitar sound is difficult to describe. Compare this to say 'Master of Puppets' by Metallica. The latter sounds thick and fuzzy, whereas this sounds slightly thin and crisp? Still good, but a distinct difference is sound for two of the most famous trash metal albums. Just something I find quite interesting. There's no fat to trim here, it's the definition of all killer, no filler. There's so many riffs packed into this, the solos are phenomenal. A band at the peak of their powers.

I can't believe there are people out there going about with their lives and not listening to Rusty in Peace.

So fking fast and aggressive, insane solos and some real bangers like Hangar 18, writing guitar hero history on top! Solo 7, never forget... Also bangers are Holy Wars..., Lucretia, Five Magics, Tornado of Souls (!!!) Spongebob!!! ich will ein Kind von dir!!!!!!

megadesu

i must admit: i have grown to love Dave Mustaine's ridiculous voice. first off, i've listened to people who have unconventional voices sing before and liked it as much as Dave's vocals if not more, so why should he get docked points for sounding like a cartoon rat? he can't help it! that quality aside, i don't think there's a single bad or boring riff on the record -- everything feels right, with each song taking Mustaine and Friedman's solos in a new bold direction. i do wish that the lyrics were a bit less simple, but most people don't really come to thrash metal for nuanced discussions of authoritarianism in the current decade, do they? i don't really have much else to say. Rust in Peace probably deserves the hype.

By far the best Megadeth has to offer and it goes hard

Megadeth is the band made me think I would be a metalhead all my life. Well I'm not anymore but they are still one of my favourites and this album is easily in my top 10.

This has to be approaching the apotheosis of the genre, right?

Can't get much better than this. Tight, fast, heavy, inventive riffs, impeccable production. Perfect.

So many face melting solos here. I can't tell which is better - the music or the album cover.

## In-Depth Review of *Rust In Peace* by Megadeth *Rust In Peace*, released on September 24, 1990, is widely regarded as one of the definitive albums in the thrash metal genre and a cornerstone of Megadeth's discography. This album marked a significant evolution in the band's sound and lyrical depth, showcasing their technical prowess and thematic ambition. In this review, we will explore the album's lyrics, music, production, themes, influence, as well as its pros and cons. ### Lyrics The lyrical content of *Rust In Peace* reflects a blend of personal introspection and broader socio-political commentary. The album's title was inspired by a bumper sticker that read, "May all your nuclear weapons rust in peace," which encapsulates the anti-war sentiment that permeates several tracks. - **"Holy Wars… The Punishment Due"** addresses the complexities of religion and war, drawing from Mustaine's experiences and observations during a performance in Northern Ireland. The lyrics juxtapose religious fervor with the harsh realities of conflict. - **"Hangar 18"** delves into conspiracy theories surrounding UFOs and government cover-ups, showcasing Mustaine's knack for weaving intricate narratives that provoke thought. - **"Dawn Patrol"** offers a more personal reflection, featuring a spoken-word segment that explores themes of loneliness and existential dread. - **"Tornado of Souls"** features some of the most memorable lines in thrash metal, reflecting on betrayal and heartbreak through vivid imagery. Overall, the lyrics are characterized by their complexity and depth, moving beyond typical metal tropes to engage with significant issues while still maintaining an aggressive tone. ### Music Musically, *Rust In Peace* is celebrated for its intricate compositions and technical proficiency. The introduction of guitarist Marty Friedman and drummer Nick Menza brought a new level of creativity to Megadeth’s sound. - The album is marked by **razor-sharp riffs**, complex time signatures, and virtuosic solos. Tracks like **"Tornado of Souls"** feature some of the best guitar work in heavy metal history, with Friedman’s melodic leads perfectly complementing Mustaine’s aggressive rhythm guitar. - **Drumming** on the album is equally impressive. Menza’s performance is both powerful and precise, driving songs like **"Holy Wars…"** with relentless energy while also providing dynamic changes that enhance the overall experience. - The production quality is noteworthy; the album was produced by Dave Mustaine and Mike Clink, resulting in a crisp sound that allows each instrument to shine without overshadowing others. The balance between guitars, bass, and drums creates an immersive listening experience. ### Themes Thematically, *Rust In Peace* explores various issues ranging from political corruption to personal struggles. Some key themes include: - **War and Politics:** Many songs address the futility of war and its consequences on humanity. Mustaine’s lyrics often reflect his disillusionment with political systems and their impact on society. - **Existentialism:** Tracks like **"Dawn Patrol"** delve into personal introspection, exploring feelings of isolation and despair. - **Conspiracy Theories:** Songs such as **"Hangar 18"** tap into popular culture's fascination with UFOs and government secrecy, reflecting a broader skepticism towards authority. These themes contribute to the album’s enduring relevance, resonating with listeners who grapple with similar concerns in contemporary society. ### Influence *Rust In Peace* has had a profound influence on both thrash metal and heavy music as a whole. Its technicality set new standards for musicianship within the genre: - Many contemporary metal bands cite *Rust In Peace* as a major influence on their sound. Its blend of speed, complexity, and melody has inspired countless musicians to push the boundaries of what heavy metal can be. - The album has been recognized in various "greatest albums" lists across music publications, solidifying its status as a classic. It is often regarded alongside Metallica's *Master of Puppets* as one of the pinnacle achievements in heavy metal history. ### Pros and Cons #### Pros - **Technical Mastery:** The musicianship displayed throughout the album is exceptional. Each member contributes significantly to the overall sound. - **Lyrical Depth:** The lyrics tackle complex themes with intelligence and creativity, setting them apart from many contemporaries in heavy metal. - **Cohesive Production:** The production quality enhances the listening experience, making each track engaging from start to finish. - **Influential Legacy:** The album has left an indelible mark on heavy metal culture and continues to inspire new generations of musicians. #### Cons - **Pacing Issues:** Some listeners have noted that certain tracks can feel slower or less engaging compared to others (e.g., "Dawn Patrol"), which may disrupt the album's overall flow. - **Vocal Style:** Dave Mustaine's vocal delivery can be polarizing; his high-pitched snarl may not appeal to all listeners. - **Limited Bass Presence:** While David Ellefson's bass work is competent, it often gets overshadowed by the guitars, leading to critiques regarding its prominence in the mix. ### Conclusion In summary, *Rust In Peace* stands as a monumental achievement in Megadeth's career and in the broader landscape of heavy metal music. Its combination of intricate musical arrangements, thought-provoking lyrics, and high production quality solidifies its status as a classic. Despite minor critiques regarding pacing and vocal style, the album remains an essential listen for any fan of metal or rock music. Its influence continues to resonate today, making it not just an album but a cultural touchstone within the genre.

"Humanity Still Producing New Art As Though Megadeth’s ‘Rust In Peace’ Doesn’t Already Exist" - indeed. A perfect album and my favorite dual-guitar combo in Mustaine and Friedman.

Proof that rage is one hell of a motivator. Undoubtedly Mustaine’s greatest attempt to emerge victorious in the Metallica/Megadeth battle. And dare I say it? It might just be a tad better than anything Metallica ever produced.

I can see why my evangelical family spent so much energy keeping my generation from listening to “secular” music, let alone Megadeth, suspect #1 in Americas descent into satanism. This album whips ass, full stop. It probably would have made 8 year old me into a metal head on the spot.

Quite frankly you could remove the other 1000 albums from this list and just call it the one album you should listen to before you die

The greatest metal album ever made. Marty Friedman is a god among men. Some of the best guitar playing ever recorded. Every song is a banger, Tornado of Souls is timeless. I love the closing song song rust in peace is just a perfect way to close the album and encapsulate the core theme of the album.

Holy Wars is a kick ass song! great album!

Probably, the album I've listened to the most times in my life. Best guitar work in metal, best drumming, best song writing (first four songs + tornado of souls are metal perfection). Even the (somehow weak) vocals fit like a glove. Side A: 5 Side B: 4.5 Rating: 5

Better than anything Metallica ever did (but Megadeth fell so hard comparatively).

i wore this album t-shirt to my grandma's funeral

Still their best. Complex yet accessible, incredible riffs, drumming and lyrics, with brilliant song structures. Contains the classic ‘Hangar 18’ too. I still listen to this album avidly. Mandatory !

Shrouded in deep shred Absurdities rise and rule Face melting metal

Top 5 all time record.

I am not heavy metal but I would love to be a heavy guy. This rips.

The best thrash metal band beginning with an M not-so-peacefully proves that what shreds may never die.

This is everything that all metal bands want to be, but few are — aggressive while still being dynamically virtuosic, with a political sophistication few others can match.

An almost perfect metal album. Everything here is on point. I would not have expected to like Megadeth that much.

Some of the best metal riffs ever - a bona fire classic from big Dave and the boys

I have to admit something. You see, all of my reviews so far have been after my first listen of an album. At most I had heard just a few songs from the album before for some of the more popular ones like Thriller and Paranoid. Rust in Peace is an exception. I actually listened to this album about 2 years ago because I wanted to explore metal a bit more and I saw a lot of people praising this album in particular. So, after listening to it a second time, how do I feel about Megadeth's fourth studio album, Rust in Peace? Well, and I may be biased seeing as this was one of the first albums I listened to that really got me passionate about music listening, but this is one of my favorite albums of all time. I love this album so much. I want to say something about every song, but I'll start with the general traits pertaining to the whole album that I love. The sound is just awesome. There's so much energy here and I love it. The mixing (the original 1990 mixing, that is) is really good. Some metal albums tend to have poor mixing, especially in the bass department (I'm looking at you, ...And Justice For All). Rust in Peace does not have that issue. The bass work from David Ellefson is amazing. Nick Menza's drum work here is also stunning. It doesn't get focused on much in the album, but it's still there and it's great. Of course, the thing that makes Rust in Peace such a special album, in my opinion, is Marty Friedman's guitar work. In particular, this album has some of my favorite guitar solos ever, with there being one in particular that stands out above the rest. There is one band member whose talent is a a bit more mixed though, at least according to most people. Yes, I am of course referring to the band's frontman himself, Dave Mustaine. Look. There's no debating over whether or not he's a good guitarist or lyricist. He just is. The debate comes when you talk about his vocals. Yeah, they're not great sometimes. However, I actually think they work really well on this particular album. They sound decent here. Are there better vocal performances in metal albums? Sure. However, I think that this album is not a good example of a bad vocal performance from Dave Mustaine. Going back to general elements, the writing is pretty good too. I feel like Rust in Peace is a very cohesive album despite the variety in songs. Speaking of which, let's go over each song and what they bring to the table. "Holy Wars...The Punishment Due" is the perfect opener. Everything I've said about the album so far is perfectly encapsulated in this song, It's a masterpiece. "Hangar 18" is one of my favorites. The second half in particular is especially fun, and the writing is good. "Take No Prisoners" is a very fast song that I just love. The talent shown in this song alone is just immense. "Five Magics" is crazy and I love it. It's all over the place in the best way possible. "Poison Was The Cure" has some particularly amazing bass work. The juxtaposition between the fun sound and the not-so-fun writing about Dave Mustaine's drug problems creates a very unique song. "Lucretia" feels pretty different from the rest of the songs, but it's great too. I really like Dave's vocals on this one. "Tornado of Souls" might be even better than Holy Wars. The song would already be great without it, but the guitar solo in this one is the stuff dreams are made of. It is honestly one of my favorite parts of any song ever. "Dawn Patrol" is probably my least favorite on the album, but revisiting it has given me a bit of a new perspective. I think the song does its job well and shows off some more great bass playing. Finally, "Rust in Peace...Polaris" is a great closer. Maybe not as good of a closer as Holy Wars is an opener, but still amazing. The theme of nuclear war is especially strong on this one. I know I yapped a lot about this album, but how could I not? It's literally Rust in Peace. It is easily one of the best metal albums ever made, and because metal is awesome, that makes it one of the best albums of all time, in my opinion. It is a metal masterpiece. 5/5.

Amazing thrash

Truck yah!!!!!!

A great album with a lot of variation. A fantastic thrashmetal album.

Snarly virtuoso thrash

Fun album to work to, so motivating

Rust in Peace is one of my favourite albums of all time. In my opinion, it is THE best metal album of all time. I'm a fan of Megadeth, and I've already listened to this album several times. There is spectacular guitar work, and spectacular drumming throughout this album. It starts with Holy Wars...The Punishment Due, which is arguably one of the best first tracks for any album. It was my second-favourite song for some time. Then comes Hangar 18. Another great song. Then comes Take No Prisoners. Then comes Five Magics, and so on. Tornado of Souls is one of the most impressive songs, in my opinion. The album ends with Rust in Peace...Polaris. What a great track to finish this masterpiece of an album. 40 minutes and 48 seconds of metal bliss. If you've never listened to this album, do yourself a favour, and listen to it.

\m/ One of the best Thrash Metal albums ever made \m/

Album title - badass 💀🤠 Album cover - super badass 💀💀💀💥💥💥 Album contents - ultra badasss ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 I am not a fan of heavy music, but these guitars I could appreciate. Real mastery.

Very nice

The Onion article pretty much sums it up.

Thrash metal classic and I can see why, it all just hits so fucking hard. The musicianship and energy are so dam infectious from the first to the last track. Fav songs: - pretty much all of em

classic

Love this album so much already!!!

"Rust in Peace" is the fourth studio album by American thrash metal band Megadeth. It was the first album with guitarist Marty Friedman and drummer Nick Mensa as lead singer, guitarist and band leader Dave Mustaine kicked out guitarist Jeff Young and drummer Chuck Behler from the band. Bassist David Ellefson rounds out what most people consider to be Megadeth's classic and best line-up. The album's lyrical themes include religion, politics, warfare and Mustaine's fight against alcohol and drug abuse. The album is critically well regarded and considered one of the best thrash metal albums of all time. I'd agree there. Commercially, it hit #8 in the UK and #23 in the US. The album opens with two absolute thrash metal bangers. "Holy Wars...the Punishment Due" starts with a guitar sounding like a horse galloping. The drums, bass and guitar kick in. Yes, lots of guitar shredding. Yes, lots of pace changes. The song was inspired by a Megadeth concert in Northern Ireland where Mustaine found out bootleg shirts were being sold to support "the cause," the band played "Anarchy in the UK " and caused a riot. "Next mistake....no more mistakes." It's hard for me to hear "Hangar 18" and not visually see those Guitar Hero II circles rolling very quickly off the TV screen. An opening guitar riff which turns into dual guitar leads. Very melodic. Pace changes with epic and memorable guitar solos (plural). Of course, it's about conspiracies in Area 51. No shortage of interesting lyrics on this album as in "5 Magics" Mustaine speaks of mastering the five magics to over throw the evil prince. It's based on the fantasy book of the same name and, I'm thinking, most likely an analogy for Mustaine's struggle with drugs. It's a slower paced song with eerie guitar keys and feedback. The band really goes at it when they speed up. Mustaine making statements and then answering in a deep voice. Speaking of epic guutar solos, Friedman delivers one in "Tornado of Souls." A drving rhythms section throughout and about Mustaine's ex-girlfriend Diana. The album closes with "Rust in Peace...Polaris." A drum intro here (all instruments had an intro). Speed drums with an odd time signature as the rest of the band joins. There's a good deal of thrash metal mode. Mustaine's talking and singing. A statement on nuclear warfare and the ensuing spreading disease. Everything works on this album. Absolutely, top-notched musicians. Stunning guitar solos and dual-lead and layered guitars. Multiple pace changes. It's a melodic, fast and hard...that's difficult to combine. The lyrical themes are classic heavy metal - war, science fiction and drugs but Mustaine's lyrics exceed mostly every other metal album. This sounded good today as it did back in 1990 and in 2006 (Guitar Hero II released). A great, great album and up near the top of any best thrash metal album list.

Yes yes and yes.

Incredible thrash album that I can throw on amongst my favourites in the genre. Solid riffs, cathchy and progressive. Not too short and not too long. Just classic thrash from a band at its peak.

Sweet Jesus! Wrap me in your death metal embrace and take me to the promised land.

Thrash metal classic.

4/5 or 5/5?

You listen to the first track "Holy Wars...The Punishment Due" and think this clearly is the greatest metal track of all time. Then the second track, "Hangar 18" comes on and you reconsider. Easy 5.

There's some part of my brain that seems to have taught itself that Megadeth was the weakest link of the "big four," with them just eating Metallica's dust. However, actually listening to their respective albums has taught me anything but. This album goes hard, REAL hard, and tapes you to your seat instantly with the one-two combo that is Holy Wars and Hangar 18 back-to-back. Its an insane pair that sets the tone for the rest of the album perfectly, something it rarely strays from, and other than some miniscule hiccups, the album keeps you enthralled with excellent instrumentation and Dave Mustaine's unique yet catchy vocal delivery. I understand why would could find this grating, but you're doing it wrong if you don't find at least one song to love here. Best part is it doesn't overstay its welcome, leading to a brisk pace that makes sure the listener isn't just sitting there waiting for the next tune. I mean, you already heard the best at the start, so why not just enjoy the rest? Not to say the rest isn't trying to be just as good, with golden nuggets of thrash excellency peppered all over the record, with the whole album truly climaxing at that Tornado of Souls solo, which still stands to be one of the best in the industry. Just a destructive force of album, but one that perhaps it would be worth to reckon with, just so you too can understand Megadeth superiority.

Possibly my favourite metal album ever, best Megadeth album. 5/5

YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Rust in Peace has everything I could ask for in a metal album. Face melting solos, kick ass drums, dark themes, high energy, and intense vocals without relying solely on screaming/gurgling. I've known of Megadeth and heard many of their hits but for some reason I never sought out anything beyond that. This album solidified my belief that I need to take a deeper look at their catalog because it is fire.

Loved this start to finish and the second time too. I can’t say it helped me calm down and don’t think it will be a regular for that reason, but it stroked the inner thrashings I had going on in just the right way and it’s inspiring to see what kind of beauty can emerge from the mud of rage.

One of the best metal albums of all time!! \m/

I love this album so much. I think this might have been one of the first five or so CDs I ever owned, and did I ever listen to it!

Some of the best Thrash or even all-around heavy music you can listen to... with some of the dumbest cornball lyrics/vocals ever written. I will admit that the corny 90s metal and death metal lyrics have grown on me over time and I now find them endearing, which then makes them gay and me a poser.

גיטרות מושלמות קצב מדהים אי אפשר שלא לזוז

Cool af 5/5

great album

From start to finish, Rust in Peace is an exercise in how pulverizing, hard-hitting, breakneck and relentless thrash metal can get. At forty minutes, it also never overstays its welcome and can be a welcome respite from all the other ponderous metal records of the time. Classic thrash, classic Megadeth, classic album.

Another solid and pinnacle metal album Huge hits and huge licks. Dave Mustaine’s post Metallica project east triumph and this album is one of his best 4.5

One of my all time favorite albums. These songs are incredibly tight and inspiringly composed. So complex and technical - fantastic!

Album shreds start to finish. Marty Friedman kills it.

Fit perfectly

Amazing, one of my faves

what a banger right after metallica. to be fair, it does sound like metallica, but dialed up to 15. instrumentals and solos are insane, not a big fan of vocals, but they are a-okay. just knockout good ol metal that sounds fresh, technical and interesting. special shoutout to hangar 18, this song is crazy Significant 29/79 Liked 14/79 Added 4/79 YYY

Love this album. Will I listen to again: 100%

I wouldn't call myself a fan of metal but goddamn

Of the big 4, my favorite was always Slayer. And I usually think of Megadeth as the scrappy little brother due to Dave's relationship with Metallica. Which is all to say that while I like Megadeth okay, they are not my favorite. This record slaps though. It's a little cheesy, but that's more age than anything. The vocal is still a whiny mess.

There's something about five-minute thrash burners; No one can accuse Megadeth of sneaking up. Rust is tighter thematically than Peace, has the same relentless forward momentum. Drum tone gets plenty of space near the end, which is a win for every genre.

really good

Bought an old copy of The Magic Roundabout board game to this album. Pretty radical.

Great heavy metal album, zero bad songs

My first ever listen. This is amazing! Consider me a fan!

ROCK THE FUCK ON OUGH

tremendo opener rust in peace buen metal 5 estrellas

AMAZING. so fun to listen to.

Awesome album. Megadeth was always hit or miss for me, but then they crushed it when I saw them live. So I'm forever biased. The guitar and drum work are just so fun to listen to throughout the album. It feels like grooves and metal shouldn't go together, but that's the exact feeling I got each track. That's just what happens when the instrumentals are so tight. Favorite track: Holy Wars...The Punishment Due

Not just noise. I was not really into metal especially trash. I like Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath but this… is just so much more with those riffs, this voice. I must remember Mustaine as one of the best guitarist I’ve heard. The cover is also really beautiful. Nice discovery

- Never listened to Megadeth before - Didn't think I'd like it but I loved it - Another album that makes me glad that I'm using this website, would've never listened to this otherwise - Will need to listen to the rest of their discog and other similar stuff - Fav songs: Hangar 18, Holy Wars, Rust in Peace

Pretty great guitar throughout, definitely my favorite type in the 'metal' arena

Surprisingly delicate in places, but mostly like being plugged into the mains.

This was surprisingly incredible. I just avoided this kind of thing when I was younger because I heard enough bad examples of it to give up. This thing really hit me though. Guitar work is insane and the lyrics and singing, while dated and cringy in some places, were powerful and interesting for the most part. Really surprised myself to give this 5 stars but here we are.

This album's reputation is well deserved.

I’m so torn.On one hand this album has some of the best metal songs of all time. But also mustaines vocals are so bad and there’s large parts of the album of uninteresting guitar noodling.Marty friedmans solos can be godlike but can also be really boring sometimes. Also I don’t like dawn patrol at all.I’ll give it a five because I’m nice.

10/10 gracias por poner este disco estuvo D+

Fuck yeah, sick cunt

Probably my absolute favourite Megadeth album. Solid from start to finish.

A solid metal album, great

>>>>>>>>Master of puppets

I love this album, very biased, the only knock I have on it are the shorter songs (interludes?) are a bit tough to listen to, but still a favorite that gets played frequently.

Instant 5!!! This is the album that got me into metal. I finally got what everyone was talking about. It's so pleasing, it's so hilarious, it's so over the top, it's amazing. Fun metal. Fun like a haunted house pinball machine. Crazy that it was made by such a troubled person. It’s really creative. People talk endlessly about the guitar solos but it’s really the songwriting and arrangements that feel inventive to me. 5 stars because if rocked my world when I first listened to it last year. 5/5

i ❤️ degameth

YES. MORE. \m/

From start to finish, Rust in Peace is just an exercise in how pulverizing, hard-hitting, breakneck and relentless one of the big 4 of thrash metal can get. Approaching a sweet spot at forty minutes, it also never overstays its welcome and can be a welcome respite from all the other ponderous metal records of the time. Classic thrash, classic Megadeth, classic album.

marty friedman five star

In my opinion this is Megadeths best album.

What is thrash metal? This. This is thrash metal.

Strong, great choice for an opening song. Head bopping stuff. Three songs in. Solid first 3. Can’t give any half stars on the website, so it’s gotta be a 5/5 because it’s sure better than 4/5. Fantastic catchy album. Probably a good start for someone like me to get into Megadeth.

Where most thrash metal loses me is when the have this non-conducive solo sections and screaming that just throw me out of the groove. Rust In Peace is fast paced, expertly executed, crisp and fun. Megadeath has legit earned another fan on this. Fuck me up, this album rocks.

It's been a few days since I listened to this, and I find myself having to re-listen to remember what it's like. I mean, it's good. Not my genre. The imagery of it is quite hilariously "teen boy" and you can imagine the stench of unwashed leather and denim at their concerts. That saying, the whole thing is tighter than a tight thing and it does exactly what it sets out to do - with aplomb. Probably going to have to be 5 stars, isn't it?

I remember when I first discovered Megadeth.. I had just gotten big into Metallica and learned about their connected histories with Dave Mustaine leaving Metallica to start Megadeth. I was blown away by what I was hearing.. Megadeth is clearly more committed to the thrash metal scene for the long haul unlike metallica who moved on from it after an album or two. Dave Mustaine is a riff wizard. He is not a great singer, but it's impressive that he maintains both lead singer and lead guitar.

This gets better for every other thrash metal album I listen to.🐐

That album was so important to me in my discovery of metal music. I still think it's an absolute masterpiece to this day. It has a punky and nasty vibe that the rest of the Big Four never had. We can feel that Dave was pissed off and he made the most raging record of his career. Better than anything Metallica has recorded, in my opinion.

A pillar of the Trash Metal genre. Makes me glad Mustaine left Metallica

Musicians on point - energy at the top. 5 STARS *****

This is without the shadow of a doubt one of the best thrash metal album ever made and the best that we'll ever get from Megadeth. In Rust in Peace, we can feel another kind of anger, lead by inimitable guitar works, killer drum parts and intoxicating vocals.

Great recommendation. Has heard some songs before but definitely one of the best (of not the best) metal albums of all time

Phenomenal

Sonzeira, curto das antigas já

Love starting my day off with some good old thrash metal

Pure ownage. Best track: Holy Wars...The Punishment Due

Ok, it sold me. Fun thrash.

Great classic rock !

One of my favorite albums since it came out.

Brilliant album, proper shredding, proper heavy!!! Saved tracks: Holy Wars... The Punishment Due, Hangar 18, Five Magics, Poison Was The Cure, Tornado Of Souls

One of those albums I've heard countless times, learnt on guitar (not the solos though, haha) and have always seen as a high point of not just Megadeth's career, but heavy metal in general. Not much more to say, really. 5/5.

Masterpiece.

Pretty much the template for thrash metal. The best guitar playing they’ve ever had, with some blistering solo parts by Marty Friedman. I’ve never been big on Dave Mustaine’s singing, but he is at his best here. The guitar parts are intricate and inventive, and at no point does it feel thrown together, all the sections are well thought out, and nothing feels out of place in any of the songs. This was the best Megadeth had ever been.

'Holy Wars' is metal personified.

Great guitar tone and really tight drumming. The lyrics are interesting, and I’d probably need another listen to have a full picture. However they’re definitely clever, the phallic imagery on the “rust in piece… Polaris” is a well-executed satire of Cold War one-upmanship . I really enjoy the enjoy the guitar playing. (Knowing nothing of the genre) it has all the elements that I like from both math rock and classic rock. Honestly, I think this is as good as it gets for metal and me

wow. didnt think i liked metal that much, but this was excellent

What I personally want metal from this era to sound like

Stripes Earned, I've given a 5 to each of the big 4. So far, my favorite of Megadeth's Albums easily.

i don’t know what it is about this album, i just think it’s great. 10/10

Fuck ya!!!!!

A masterpiece of thrash, hard and heavy with clear intent and message. Megadeth at its possibly best, musically if not commercially. Rips louder than your mum's ass after Thanksgiving dinner. 5/5 bangers all the way. Dawn Patril is the weakest track and it still sets a mood unlike many other bands on this list so far.

Ridiculous, mind-bending riffs that border on orchestral at certain points. An incredible thrash record. Favorite tracks: "Tornado of Souls", "Five Magicks"

Nothing to say here; an essential metal album.

A surprise 5 star from me! What a blast! Apparently thrash metal hyped me up big time. Guitar solos were insane!

Wicked

What a classic. I had this CD when I was 13 or so. It kind of makes me sad that grunge and "alternative" music played such a big role in this genre of music becoming less popular. I was totally one of those kids who absolutely loved metal but within a couple years wasn't really listening to it anymore.

RIP will always hold a special place in my heart, as well as metal history. The latter because IMO this was so good that this is why thrash had to fade out, there was no topping Dave’s new crew’s chemistry and his ability to balance harmony and anger. The former because this is one of the first metal CDs I got and fell in love with. And even if I ever have to sell off my collection, there is no way that I would part with my 1990 first edition- the remaster that reverbs Dave’s vocals is just not it. But this sounds as technically perfect as ever, even the (likely deliberate) imperfect moments. And I’ll always go to bat for “Dawn Patrol”, which is a neat little interlude before the deadly finish. I don’t think that I can give this a full A due to Dave’s politics and Junior’s recent problems. I’m still willing to compromise for 5 stars and accept that Dave has always had his foot in his mouth (we wouldn’t have “Holy Wars” if he didn’t say some particularly insensitive shit, for instance), and Junior’s creepy behavior is a seemingly more recent development. All I know is that I feel like putting it back on.

5/5, one of the best thrash metal albums ever.

I absolutely love this album. One of the all time great metal albums.
