Hay energía y dura lo justo. Lástima que no aporte nada nuevo a un veterano musiquero como yo.

Opens up with a nice punchy rock song but then just spits out 10 of the exact same. Repetitive but not mind numbing. Specific rating - 4.0 Fav song - hats to say I told you so Least fav - untutored youth

a compilation album from swedish garage rock band the hives, compiling past album and ep recordings into one big collection. the album was created to introduce the brits (and to an extent everyone else on the planet) to their music, which was arguably the perfect time to do so, with bands like franz ferdinand and the arctic monkeys also getting success around this time. this glorified sampler performed very well on british music charts. it's understandable why this album got big after hearing it for only about a few minutes. big poppy punky rocky anthems with a lot of fast songs, aggressive vocals and constant guitar riffing... pop rock albums are always good when i'm nodding my head with a lot of tracks. it's not something i consciously think about, it just kinda happens. i'm honestly surprised that a lot of people, not just on the 1001 site but on other websites too giving this album a three-star rating, but i found it pretty enjoyable, enough where it deserves a four. it's good! gets me pumped.

Quick Review on The Hives “You New Favourite Band” This album could be a soundtrack for cocaine use (I demand autonomy! :P). No but seriously, if any of you are going to start street racing, you should buy this album. If any of you need a song to play while you’re running from the cops, this is the album to play. If any of you are making a movie about Charlie Sheen’s exploits and need music for it,‘this is the album to play. Definitely not my new favourite band. But absolutely a band I would have wanted a T-shirt of when I was younger. High energy all throughout the album and very simple lyrics to make the instrumentals the highlight. While I enjoyed it at times, there were definitely times I wanted to go find something else to listen to instead. Not the worst, but far from a favourite. Rating: 4/10 Stars: 2/5

I don't love it as much as I wanted to. Its a great album, and its in my wheel house... but it feels like they are trying to be a hard core punk band while keeping their indie vibe. It just feels off.

Its enjoyable in short periods. A fun live band but youd never just fancy banging em on would ya

One of 1st albums I ever bought, got it from Woolworths, god rest its' soul 'Main Offender' and 'Die Allright' in particular, Great stuff Maybe gets a bit samey the longer it goes on, but still gets a 3.5

- points for a compilation. That's cheating

4/5 because it is a compliation. Would it be a regular album, 5/5. Don't know if it makes sense to have compliations on this list in the first place.

It’s like if the sex pistols were 20 years late to the game and had nothing unique about them

Win wenig Zurich rockig

Yup. Had to look this band up because the lead singer reminded me of someone else, I will not say, as per my critique tradition, as I do not bring other musicians in typically to avoid comparisons. However the style, which I would call post-punk is called garage. Okay. Sure. This is spectacularly up my ally and it is mmm... I loved this. Funny name for the album as it DOES make me put them pretty high on my list! Anyhow, yeah, this is just fantastic and cool and lets go!

I love the hives … see them live if you can. I love this album too, but it is a compilation and so slightly cheating.

The title is a little bit of a fib, not only is The Hives not my new favorite band, but they're a pretty bland one at that.

Playing loud and fast is all very well but songs still need melody and that is sorely lacking here.

625/1089 - It's shitty dime-a-dozen punk music and it isn't even an album. Why is this on the list?

Not bad.

Hate to say I told you so and main offer for are great. The rest of it is consistently good toot

short album but decent listen

Great album. 4.5 stars

Garage rock, a touch of punk, noisy guitars. Very unusual for an album from 2001. Listening to it, you immediately think of Iggy and The Stooges. Not the best thing for me this morning. I don't think I'll be listening to this record again!

Pretty decent, good variety, high-energy set of songs. I think there was a lot of this kind of thing at the time. I find the sort of fourth-wall-breaking ("your new favorite band" and "the hives are the law" etc) cringey but I'm sure in 2001 I would have been going wild for it. Decent music overall, enjoyed the momentum.

Standouts Hate to Say I Told You So AKA IDIOT

Nice, energetic punk stuff. Maniacal at times.

28 minute album that went by so fast. Just like a punk album. Singer definitely shouts like he's in a punk band too. Weird to have a compilation album on this list since that exists for so many other artists and those aren't on here.

I had a brief obsession with this record back in the day. In fact I downloaded it off Napster. 2-3 minute blasts of pure rock and roll. Great stuff

Another next big thing band that fell victim to the end of the monoculture. The Hives were supposed to be huge. This album is fun, definitely the most punk album of the time of those on this list.

Nothing special about this album. 2 stars or D+.

It has a cool garage rock revival sound, short and sweet with 12 songs at 28 minutes. It sounds very 70's punk with a Britpop flair, but not sure what makes this a must hear album. Nothing is innovative or any better than other bands doing the same thing. Also I think it is a bit lame to put a compilation album on the list. It isn't bad and will definitely listen to some of this again but I would not consider this to be a great album.

Kind of difficult to rate because I do enjoy this album but I kind of just felt like a lot of the tracks sounded similar and there wasn’t enough variety. I wouldn’t call it essential listening but nothing bad about it particularly.

I first learned about The Hives from a clip of them performing “Supply and Demand” on Later… with Jools Holland. They were like a bottle rocket, more exciting and viscerally alive than any music video I’d seen on MTV in my young life. Needless to say, they instantly became my “New Favourite Band.” I went out and found a used copy of Veni Vidi Vicious, listening on repeat, and learning the drum patterns. It’s been a while since I returned to their music, but it’s easy to tap back in to the youthful, exuberant energy injected into this record.

I listened to this while frantically searching for documents needed to process a transaction at the RMV. I did not find the documents and will need to pay an extra $25 becuase of it, but at least at had an enjoyable soundtrack for the ordeal. 3.5

Fav: The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime L: Supply and Demand 1.5 I thought best of albums weren't supposed to be on here. The whole thing felt monotone despite that though. Listening to a song or two was alright, but it got old fast. Cover: 2.5 Name: 1.5 Very risky title and does not pay off here Minecraft Parody: A.K.A S-T-E-V-E

Tastes a bit like aspartame. Not my new favourite band. Not terrible but not for me I think.I vibed with the second half more than the first for sure. 2/5

hiiiiiiiii

i don’t like it

Like others have already commented, I don't think compilation albums should be on this list. That said, making a compilation album that's only 28 minutes long is something I, on the other hand, do admire. Swedes really did the early 2000s garage rock revival the best and this album just about proves it. Not a single wasted second here, it's all just about as good as it gets.

Starts with a classic that really helps carry the energy through a few songs in but sort of meanders after that. If this is Post Punk then its the type of Post punk that I prefer over others. Vocals have this gritty garage quality that I could see being grating but works well for me. Simple instrumentation and relies on the pure emotion of the song more often than not. I do find it odd to have a compilation album on the list when so many others could have been chosen for other bands, perhaps the Gershwin Songbook is another example but that feels different to me. Either way I rated it as I heard it.

Sounds a lot like The Vines. The album cover kind of looks like a 60's album cover. It's really good and was definitely worth the listen!

This album is... fine... I guess. Nothing here is bad, but nothing really stands out either. This is basically the same exact song over and over again. I am just glad that it is short. Mid 3.

Not _technically_ a compilation, as this was the first physical release in the UK for the band, but why not have a moan anyway. Anyway, they are The Hives! And you are not!

it was rock. most songs made no sense but it sounded aight

caught a couple of vibes

Well. By sound this should be my jam. By execution this… fell into ABBA territory. I liked it for a little while. Then I wanted to listen to something else long before the album was over. 3 Boolean: null

Overall, it's a fine album, and some songs are truly good, but they're all a bit samey and it gets stale pretty quickly. It's your run-of-the-mill post-punk album where they confuse screaming with singing, and where distortions don't really serve a purpose outside of sounding rebellious. It's high-energy, but there's no real sense of personality behind the music. I've heard better in that genre.

Musically it'd be a high 3, or maybe even a low 4, but I don't fuck with compilations.

Hate to Say I Told You So is an early 2000s anthem. The rest of the album just seemed to get angrier and angrier in a way that didn’t do it for me quite like that opening track.

A 28 minute album, all very frenetic. Opening track is an absolute banger. Rest is less good but still fun, but the absolute beauty of this band is their live shows.

Rockig aber für mich nichts besonderes 3/5

A lot of the same. Not diverse enough for me.

I’m not sure why this is here and not Veni Vidi Vicious. Which would easily get a 5 star rating. This is a great 30 minutes. But I’d rather just go and listen to a full Hives album 🤷🏻‍♂️

I tend to agree with other reviewers who are a bit confused as to why this compilation was chosen, rather than one of the early albums that are represented on this comp. However, the point is to review the album you are listening to, rather than the one you think you should be listening to. Overall, this is a lot of fun. There's nothing really surprising here, but I'm always going to enjoy this kind of punk rock and roll. It feels like a version of a strain of punk in the 90's that went under the label of garage repackaged for a slightly more mainstream audience with a little more production and a little more slickness. (This isn't to say that this is a particularly slick album. It isn't, but a lot of the stuff in the '90's really features some really raw production.) There are a couple moments where it isn't too far away from certain moments in earlier Blur or other British indie stuff. The first track really sounds like it was chosen to connect with the UK audience. The record moves very quickly away from that sound though. I'm okay with that overall.

loud, fun, punky and yes, it has that one hit you couldn't get out of your head, but I'll be honest, I still love it... some may say, "I HATE TO SAY I TOLD YOU SO, Alright, Come on, do believe I told you so!"

Rocked pretty hard. Could be my new favo(u)rite band

i recognized "i hate to say i told you so" from vague early 2000s embedding in my brain. sounded like Jet to me. not bad, glad it was quick. 2000s garage rock isn't exactly my genre but i don't hate it. also kinda gave "guitar hero" vibes. probably a slightly lesser version of "the strokes - is this it".

Very interesting group. I love their sound. Their minimalism is supreme. Love the guitars drums singing and lyrics

Fun and fiery but quite one-dimensional

Love it, it still hits like it did for me in my youth.

I like the hives and I like these songs but 1001 albums worthy

Short and sweet album with high energy and punk attitude all the way through. I enjoyed it and I might check out some more of The Hives' work in the future Standouts Supply And Demand Mad Men 4/5

Listens: 3 Standout Tracks: Die, All Right! I thought the 1001 Albums book made it a point not to do "Greatest Hits" or other compilation albums? Your New Favourite Band is a collection of tracks from The Hives first two albums and an EP, which seems to violate that norm. Especially since the compilation was purposefully constructed, expressly for release in the UK in an attempt to generate mainstream popularity. Also, questionable band name. I think of two things when someone says the word Hive(s): Insect hives and hives (the rash). The latter of which is unpleasant and not a great association. But I digress. I actually didn't mind this. It reminded me of The Monks, but more polished, or perhaps The Arctic Monkeys, but less British. It's also short enough that even if it got annoying, its over soon enough. I mean, shit, I almost listened to it an entire fourth time while writing this review.

insurance advert music

Didn't care for it beyond the first song.

Not sure I agree with a compilation being on the list, but I do enjoy a bit of the Hives. 3

Sonic progenitors of Arctic Monkeys and Spoon. Meh. Each song sounds like stock music used for commercials. Meh. I do not like bands who wear matching suits, and I can't think of anything less cool. Great guitar tone. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Review - this is a banging album. Crazily underrated. Much rawer than most garage rock revival music that got mainstream recognition at the time, and also one of the vide examples of garage rock crossover that had a sense of humour. A bit of a cheat for this list as it's a.compilation but can't blame it for being included, it's thoroughly good. Score - 8/10 Need to listen? YES

I'm not that much into this kind of music, but can't deny they sound great and have an awesome energy. I saw them at the Sweden Rock Festival, and they were engaging. 7//10

It’s the hives. Of course it’s good!

Should compilation albums be on this list? No. Did I thoroughly enjoy this album? Yes.

One of the biggest injustices is that The Hives didn’t get all what they deserved. These guys are punk and rock and roll. Solid record

It's alright. My favorite is the last track which was an instrumental

Why is a greatest hits compilation album on this list? I shouldn’t even give this the time of day

Blind album and artist. Sucks that this is a compilation but holy shit this shit slaps. This shit fucking slaps. All the individual tracks on their own slap you in the face and you'll take it. Time to dive in to the albums individually to see if they hold up. 5.

I always confuse The Hives and The Vines and know that there is one I like and one I don't. This to me confirmed that the Hives are the one I like! Perhaps I've never listened to this entire album but it was a lot more punk leaning than I would have expected.

Perfectly serviceable alt rock. Catchy short songs. Comes in with a punch enough for me to forgive it being a best of album

The title is correct, it is my New Favourite Band”

This was a riot!

My new favorite band they are not but they did make a pretty fun album

It seems a little strange that the critics putting this list together took the easy way out and selected a compilation album by The Hives. I’m not particularly familiar with the band, but these guys sound like a punk version of The Strokes circa 2001. It’s energetic, it’s short—which is always a good thing in my book—and there’s plenty here to enjoy, even if picking a compilation feels a little like cheating. That said, I enjoyed it enough to give it what I can only assume is the least coveted rating in the critics’ entire system: 3 stars.

Simple, straightforward, almost punk rock. There's nothing bad here, but I don't enjoy the muddy and nearly treble-free sound. It's as if that channel on the console wasn't working and they just said, "fuck it, it'll be fine." It's high energy, punch you in the eardrum music and goes by pretty quickly. It's enjoyable enough to be average.

Loud album you can't ignore, and if you need the energy you have it here. If you don't need the excess... You have it anyway...

Loved this one when it was new, and still do. This is what fun sounds like. See this band live if you ever get a chance, you won’t be disappointed.

Yup..this kicks hard, like a funnier Stooges.

This wasn't the worst thing I have ever listened to, but it was far from the best as well. There is something here. I heard a touch of The Black Keys in some of this, but while TBK has a refined sound, The Hives felt like they were winging it a lot. Worse, they ended up with a series of tracks that became a bit homogenous across the record. Frankly, punk was done better in the 1990s/2000s by other bands like Bad Religion and The Offspring. I was ready to give up on it, but it was so short that I stuck it out. As it turns out, the best song on the record was the last one, which of course didn't have any signing at all. Not devoid of talent, just devoid of inspiration.

Highlights: Hate To Say I Told You So, Main Offender, Die All Right!, Mad Man, AKA IDIOT, Automatic Schmuck, Hail Hail Spit N' Drool, The Hives Are Law You Are Crime Wtf is a compilation record doing on this list? Kinda cheating, wouldn't you say? I guess the historical significance of this compilation for their global popularity means this one can slide, but still a bit sus. Nonetheless I was excited to get into it because their style is dope. The record opened hard with their biggest hit and continued in a lively mood. Honestly the whole thing is pretty fun to listen to, but some tracks were maybe a bit too much, be it screaming or too fast vocals (like on Untortured Youth).

At least it's a short album

This album rocks hard. What’s not to like.

Сара 1 Марко 1

Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated? Maybe I’m being a little harsh, but a 28 minute compilation album with 12 songs is a bit of an odd choice. Looking back, the previous two albums were of similar length so they could have just chucked them both on a single cd for the UK release. Anyway, I’ve nothing against short albums per se, and this is a good example of short songs that don’t feel short, all around the two minute mark with only one over 3 minutes. They are most entertaining post-punk/garage rock sung and played with considerable enthusiasm. Nothing revolutionary, but they sound like a lot of fun and looking up clips on YouTube shows that they are indeed an excellent live band - not quite main stage headliners but there’s nothing wrong with that.

good album but don't tell me what to think

Я бы ничего не упустил, если бы прожил жизнь, не зная об этой группе и этой компиляции. Полный отстой

pretty same-y garage punk stuff
