Reviews (page 3 of 8)

Some proper thrashing rock. Enjoyed listening to this one. It's not an album I could sit and listen to at any given time and thoroughly enjoy, but could hit HARD at the right moment.

One of very few radio bands that I enjoy listening to. Really like how mumbly the lyrics get in several of the songs. It's like he's trying really hard to say them and just makes up new words.

I remember this era of music fondly. Id listened to the Hives before, but not an entire album. I can see how they were influential- they draw a lot from alt rock, punk, and garage rock influences while still having a sound that is distinctly their own. While their sound is on the simple side, its still both effective at blurring the line between pleasant and dissonant, pop and true rock. Overall- I enjoyed it. Id probably give it a 3.5/5, but can bump it up tp a 4 based on personal preference and the infleunce of the album

Surprisingly I really liked it! Must have been in the right mood!

I think we need a garage rock revival revival. Re-revival?

For a few months in the early 2000s after I got this album, they were my new favourite band. Loved this album back then, it's still a load of fun now, and they are even more fun live (saw them ages ago supporting Pulp on their second most recent reunion tour, and again in June this year supporting Bloc Party). I didn't realise it was a compilation back then, does show that their back catalogue is a bit lightweight as it doesn't sound anything like a greatest hits album, but the energy and attitude is amazing. The hits at the beginning are the standout, but the punkier stuff later on has its own charm. Nostalgia pushes up to a probably undeserved 4/5.

This was a lot of fun, and a great bop pretty much all the way through. It's hard not to like something that has so much infectious energy. It also doesn't overstay its welcome. 'Hate To Say I Told You So' is an absolute tune and is the standout. Side recommendation: If you ever get the chance to see these guys live, do it. They're very, very good. Complete showmen.

It’s just fun garage rock that is fun to listen to and I enjoyed playing. Never heard of the group or the album, but enjoyed my quick romp through their “greatest hits”.

Swedish garage rock that starts strong with ear worm leadoff "Hate To Say I Told You So" and fades a bit but is still a solid album.

I loved this band back in the day, fun and upbeat. They were a regular on the festivals back then as well so saw them a few times. This album is all killer no filler for sure but it is a best of. Stand out tracks: - I hate to say I told you so - Main offender - Supply and demand - Die alright - A. K. A. I. D. I. O. T - The Hives are law, you are a crime

Punk - I liked it

Frenetic and a giant push to PUNK and that doesn't mean it can't be good, popular, melodic... it's just good energy.

This was full of amazing songs. Kinda hate compilation albums but it’s just a collection of amazing post punk. Had a lot of fun in the short runtime

garage rock with punk energy. great album. highlights: “hate to say i told you so” “supply and demand” “mad man”

Along with Rocket from the Crypt, these guys were part of a sort of naughties noisy, garage-punky, rockabilly renaissance. Fun, taut album with barely an ounce of fat and loads of energy.

I'm a big fan of Garage rock band from the 60's with their raw sound, primitive beats and unbridled enthusiasm. With the revival of punk-garage bands in the late 90's, I couldn't help being curious and moderately excited. The Hives are one of those bands that gained a bit of commercial attention and brought those sounds to the attention of the mainstream. Though their music isn't overly authentic, nor anything new, they did capture the energy and excitement of bands such as, the Sonics and the Standells. They do the genre justice and the album is worth a listen. The Hives might not be, Your New Favourite Band, but you can do a whole lot worse in an era and society that embraces and praises, Teen "American Idol" pop stars like their going out of style...unfortunately, apparently not.

It’s a tight spiky blast through their albums, but weaker for being a compilation rather than a whole album. Great fun though. Huge energy.

A great rocker w 'tude for when you're in the mood.

I liked this more than I thought I would 3.5 stars

Highlights: Hate To Say I Told You So, Supply and Demand, Die All Right, Outsmarted. In a nutshell: suit up, let's rock. Note: This is one of two compilation albums in the generator and therefore ineligible for retaining its place. It will receive a review from me as the album featured in the first edition. Ahhhh. I miss the heady days of rock and indie music ruling the airwaves. The rhythm and length of most Hives songs are textbook punk rock. Short, loud, energetic, catchy. Despite the repetition, the songs are never boring. You can't help but cut loose. It packs a lot into a 28 minutes album. It's a decent compilation, but we need to swap it with a studio or live LP. Give "Veni Vidi Vicious" a burl. Overall: 7/10

I think this is an excellent album. It veers between mainstream pop punk to some harder punk. Its tight, with plenty of hooks and lots of energy. It may not try to be as cool as the strokes which is an obvious point of reference, but im not basing this on how cool it is. At worst its top level green day. At best it has a colour of black flag.

A compilation album is a weird choice for 1001 albums, it kind of defeates the purpose of the whole concept of this list. This is a great collection of songs, the albums they are on are worth listening too.

I didn’t want to like this because I thought of them as a one-hit wonder, but it won me over. Better than the Strokes, but not as good as the Black Keys or White Stripes

A greatest hits album? 'Veni Vidi Vicious' should have been picked instead. I like the Hives. It doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't. I don't think they won many song writing awards and I don't think they give a fuck.

Woo-hoo! No wait. While song 1 from my new favorite band might be legally distinct from...it does have a certain overlap in chord structure and pace as a certain Blur track, and yet it is only attitudinally adjacent and positioned within The Hives overall garage-land that I can almost forgive the trespass. Speaking of garage rock as a genre more generally for a hot minute or take, it is a small 'c' conservative genre that tends to look back more than forward and where derivative is not necessarily derogative. In fact, some ears might call it one of the greatest advantages and gifts of the genre overall. It's a promise of the genre that I will hear something that is both new and familiar with the latest release of Garage Rock X band. And so, here I am with this album from the Hives, a group I largely missed while listening to many artists that are in their cohort or that at minimum a streaming algorithm is going to feed me as similar / like content. Overall, this is a tight record that doesn't waste my time. If you like light-weight, fast-break punk but don't want to ride on that emo or pop-punk side then you probably want it in that Hives garage-style. And, if that's the case then they might just be Your New Favorite Band.

Putting a compilation album in here is such a strange decision by Dimery, particularly when it's such a great band with great individual projects. Tom fucking Waits can get his entire discography in here, but The Hives can only get a promotional cut? Barry Adamson gets two fake soundtracks that each suck shit from a straw, but The Hives have to settle for their studio's attempt at growing their UK brand? Give me a break man

I still sing 'hate to say I told you so' when I'm right (glad to say, pretty often). Slept on the rest of this album - enjoyed it quite a bit. Made my middle school heart happy. 4/5

The garage rock revival should've lasted longer, cause with acts like these guys, you can't go wrong. 4.5 down to 4.

I’m at a 3.5 that I think I’m gonna just barely bump up to a 4. I really wish I could keep it at that 3.5, but what’s here, in terms of energy and atmosphere and tempo is all honestly pretty good. The biggest knock I have on this album is its pacing and some of its production; I think there are too many tracks in a row that rely entirely on the energy of the soundscape, going at blazing fast speeds that are sure to perk up a listener, but at the expense of not being able to comprehend the lyrics, which are a bit incomprehensible throughout chunks of the back half of the album. It would be fine if it were one or two tracks in a row, but it feels like it’s around 3 or 4, and that’s simply too much. However, I thought too many of the soundscapes during that stretch were fucking rad as hell to ignore them like that. It’s a really entertaining 28 minutes, and that short length stops any one track from truly overstaying its welcome and becoming annoying. These are great individually, but as an album, they’re a little weirdly clumped together. With that said, the energy is still entirely infectious, and this album stays at a consistent enough quality that I think it can get that bump up to a 4, but it really is hanging on by a thread. I imagine if I come back to this album, those little lingering issues about lyrical comprehension and the overall pacing of the 12 tracks (seriously, who decided to have that many fast tracks in a row in the middle there?) are gonna bite at me more and more to a point where I might drop it down to a 3… but it’s no less than a 3. It’s pretty fun, and pretty good, and I think it should be on the list.

Ah, so this is where the Arctic Monkeys get it from. Can't give a greatest hits album 5 stars, but rest assured that each of the works that make this up are on the vinyl list

I really enjoy The Hives - they’re lots of fun! There’s some great tracks on this album but I think it devalues one of the key components of the challenge by listening to a complication rather than an album as the artists intended the tracks to be heard. I think I’d rather hear an album like Veni Vidi Vicious or tyrannosaurus hives! Hopefully there’s more Hives to come - it’s music I love to play loud!!

I liked this a lot more than I expected. Fun, upbeat, well played, nicely produced. Somehow not too loud. Normally I despise modern bands attempting the old punk style. But this kind of works. Should hate. Can’t.

didn't expect to enjoy it as much as i did. "die, alright!", " here we go again", "hail nail spit n' drool". no skips fr. my new favorite band kinda.

i really like the amount of appreciation there is to the bass

Exactly what I needed to hear. Goated

Me parece errado.

Not trying to reinvent the wheel with this one, just a fun straight forward garage rock album. I’ve been aware of The Hives for a long time, but I’ve never really listened to them. I had a lot of fun listening to this album and may go back and check out more of their stuff.

One of the most important punk-rock and alternative bands nowadays

Fast and melodious tunes on this album! I always like songs from The Hives, this being the greatest hits albums contains some of the best tracks.

Full tilt rocking band! Intense with a sense of humour. Not necessarily my new favourite band but I know a little more of their music and I like it!

It’s a solid 3.5, but I’m rounding up to spite Luke and Kevin.

Very good, prefer the older/punkier second half of the album (AKA IDIOT, Outsmarted).

haha, I used to play music with a guy that was into The Hives, but I never much listened to them. I am digging this album though. Very high energy.

Garage punkgarage rockpunk rock, indie. Estuvieron en Valladolid.

Quite late in the game for punk, but enjoyable.

It's pure garage punk energy - short, catchy, and makes you wanna mosh.

I love it. The bass breakdowns, cheap guitars, the vocals with too much gain, and the urgency. The last track is a good one but feels out of place

some pretty alright punk

Excellent album. Very short.

Very much my bag - Hives are classic

Really really likes it, already like the hives so

Ready for slightly polished garage punk

Garage rock/punk. Pretty cool compilation of songs from the swedish band The Hives. I had never heard of this band but was pleasantly surprised by the quality of their music. All of the songs sounded good on a technical level, loved the energy and vocals. But the big problem with the genre is that it's very easy for all of them to kind of blend together. Many of the songs were unique but there were also several that just sounded too similar. I think if they played with the styles a little bit more they could have had something really special. That being said it was just a compilation so there's not much that can be done about the songs at that point. Overall a collection of a bunch of pretty good songs, I had a good time even if it was a tad bit on the short side. Might revisit some songs, it's short enough to revisit all if I want. 3.5/5

Wow, The Hives bottled a special energy on these songs. They sound just tight and punchy enough to showcase the songwriting and just rough and sloppy enough to capture the spirit of a live punk show. They’re punk bordering on hardcore but they also sound like they love The Rolling Stones. Really fun sound. Kicks like a double shot of espresso.

I'm really glad this band is making a comeback and is touring, even if they look a few years older and might not have the footwork from their younger days. When "Hate To Say I Told You So" came out, everyone wanted to be a rock and roller. I mean, "Is This It" by The Strokes came out 3 months before this record. This kind of music was HOT. I definitely have not heard most of these songs, which is a pleasant surprise. It's great! There's a lot of solid tracks on it, and even though they are kind of a little too popular for a true punk band, hearing some of their songs brings me back to playing shows with punk bands and sharing some of that raw energy. This happens the most with "Untutored Youth", "Mad Man", and "Here We Go Again". In fact, a lot of my "real punk" punk friends would have probably loved this album if I played it for them blind and told them it's from some band that no ones heard of yet.

Fun and upbeat. I enjoyed this album!

Great album by Swedish people who know how to rock! I'm surprised they have allowed a compilation album on this list (All Our Yesterday's is a banger of a comp. I look forward to its inclusion). Its got their most famous tracks on it m, so what's not to like? A low 4.

Quintessential punk band for the millennials. Confused as to why they would choose a compilation album though.

Super interesting riffs and an amazing drummer! Liked every song of the album. If you like this try listening to "equal idiots" it's a Belgian band with the same energy.

Short album, I enjoyed it a lot 4/5

High energy garage rock - love it. Really fun album.

I’ve always liked this album but I forgot how good it is as a whole. For me, this was the best of the early 00s garage revival.

Saw the Hives with a buddy and we were sitting in the loge seats. Lead singer Howlin Pelle Almqvist decides to scale the wall and as soon as he reached us, he wasn't sure how to get down. It was one of the cooler moments I've experienced at a rock show. That all said, Veni, Vidi, Vicious should have been in the book.

Short, sharp and rocking!

I got a different Hives album (Tyrannosaurus Hives) in a separate album project I'm currently doing. These are the first two Hives albums I've heard but I like them. Their sound reminds me of Anti-Flag. 4 star

Another band I missed from that time period. Enjoyed this.

all the songs sound the same and it’s under 30 minutes…the perfect album

I like the track list of Veni Vedi Vicious more. Still awesome.

Decent album with some nice bangers. Won't be listening to it on repeat, but enjoyed it quite a bit!

What a banger of a first tune. Great garage rock/punk. 4 stars

A nostalgic pleasure that I should return to more often.

Great fun and it's either this or more limp.bizlit

Pretty good

Really enjoyed this, and a vibe we haven't seen a ton of on the list - red-hot garagey punk rock. It's not reinventing the wheel but it gets ya going and there's a lot of fun to be had in the lyrics. Strong three and a half. Fave track: Supply and Demand

Enjoyed, good for open driving

Bad sign when a band you've bever actually listened to have several songs that are already played to death. Not their fault, and tbf they are bangers.

Garage punkgarage rockpunk rock, indie. Estuvieron en Valladolid.

Maybe I'm over scoring this one based on numerous duds in a row, but good album. plenty of fun songs worth listening to.

Loud Swedish punk energy

Wow, that's a lot of energy. Actually woke me up this morning. Not sure why they included a compilation album on the list, but I'll rate it based on the merits of the music. Strong stuff, like Iggy Pop reincarnated (even though he is still alive). 4 stars.

Love the riotous punk energy with a hint of the strokes style indie rock coming through here and there. Strongest songs: Hate to say I told you so, Untutored youth, AKA I.D.I.O.T Weakest songs: Main Offender, Hives are law, you are crime

Very immediate, very exciting and very good.

This may not be my new favourite band, but I certainly enjoyed it more than I thought I might. This, as punk, hit the sweet spot between being edgy and aggressive, and also something you can bop your head to in your car on the way to work. The songs and the album are just the right length for the amount of energy they exude. "Hate to Say I Told You So" is a song I will always enjoy.

That was a short little high energy ride. I kind of liked it.

I had fun with this!

I started off not in the mood for this punky-rocky music from a Swedish band I never heard of. After a couple of songs it seemed that the albums wasn’t going to change my mental state. But as this went on there were several songs (Outsmarted and Here We Go Again, for two) I really enjoyed despite my mood - and I softened to this. Maybe if I wasn’t feeling run down and old this would get a higher rating - but I did end up enjoying these kids.

4/5. Think this is my first compilation album, which feels a little like cheating but these are some pretty cool songs. Pop punk is fun genre when done right and this is done very well. Short and sweet, solid ideas portrayed and stay just as long as needed. Will probably play these songs multiple times, great stuff.

Knew the hits but this is a decent album anyway

Fast paced and dirty, perfect if the mood calls for it

This band is so much fun.

Nice discovery

I had this when it came out, not sure it should be here in this book as it's a compilation, but it's still the 'album' which launched them in the UK for sure, along with that Kylie Minogue advert for pants or rodeo or something, so ok. Was really punchy and I loved it back then. I did always think it was kind of disposable at the time and didn't think it would stand up forever or anything, just incredibly immediate and loads of fun for a short burst. The band members names are cringe. Vigilante Steve? The breakdown bits in Untutored Youth are cringe. Hey, would you like lemon and lime with that piece of advice, mister? What? Also I remember the follow up Tyrannosaurus Hives was the law of diminishing returns, just more of the same and I lost interest. Turns out it's not in the latest edition, oh wow, that's the oldest album to be removed I think so far. Anyway this is fun for half an hour, half of the songs are pretty unremarkable, was definitely one for chucking bits of into playlists. Die Alright was and still is fantastic for pegging it down hills on your bike to.

A nice throwback to a time I don't explore that often.

As punk as it should be.

🤟🤟🤟

I didn't have any knowledge on the Hives minus "Tick Tick Boom", so this was solid.

Garage Rock/Punk Rock 2001-style. Standouts: Hate to Say I Told You So 3.5

I do love a bit of punk music and this album held up witin the punk genre. There's not really any stand out songs as pretty much all the songs were enjoyable. This album makes a great gym album or an album to get you up and going in the morning.

I read the reviews and lots of people compare them to the Strokes. I don't hear it. It's like comparing Cheap Trick to the Sex Pistols. The strokes are a drunk indie band, the hives are excited rock 'roll puppies. Favorite song: Outsmarted

My new favourite band.

Very good!

I think it's worth noting that I don't really like the lead singer here, but this album is pretty undeniable. At least the first four songs break all the way through. I don't even want to concentrate on it but I can't help it.

Best Song: A.K.A. I-D-I-O-T. Hellacious pace, and a killer chorus that makes you want to sing (but is actually difficult to get out at the speed they do). Worst Song: The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime. Lacks some of the energy and intensity of the rest of the album. Really lacklustre way to end the album. Overall: Spirited, youthful, brash. It's very flashy, but its high energy makes it endearing. A far better incarnation of this type of sound than what was attempted by the Ramones or the White Stripes.

Of of the best The bands of the early 00s; energetic, catchy, and stylish as hell. Iggy's spiritual successors.

Strong 7, Tony Hawk Pro Skater soundtrack in the best way possible

Pretty rawkin'. 4 stars/

Good album

Pretty good rock if not a bit monotonous.Might revisit. It’s nice that it’s so short.

Solid. 4, maybe 5 if it had more

messy, but that's my vibe.

All bangers

Pretty good rock sound

Not sure why this album was picked for the list since it does not seem that unique or innovative. Good record, nonetheless. It is punk rock but slightly less intense so you can listen to it in the background.

Very good album. I'd probably give it 5 stars if I hadn't burnt myself out on the Hives years ago.

Love the garage rock/punk rock genre. Super fun to listen to. Not sure it rises to the level of greatness. Extra points for real guitar and drums, turned up to maximum! I will go with a 4. Although it probably should be 3.5.

Rockin’ good times. I mostly missed these guys when they came out.

des bons souvenirs hop surnote

Lots of energy.

Here are my listening notes, in chronological order Hate To Say I Told You So does sound interesting, not interesting enough to be added to my personal playlist but i like it. 7/10 Main Offender is good, has very good rhythm but lyrics mean nothing. 6,5/10 Supply and Demand is the same as Main Offender, very good rhythm but no lyrics that stand out. 7/10 thanks to the way the instruments are played

a little punk-y for me but still good

The Hives, The Vines, The Strokes, The White Stripes….the teeming bounty of turn of the century garage rock had so many high points. Veni, Vidi, Vicious was one for me but not this album. I know it’s a compilation record of some of the VVV stuff, but especially because of that, I’m substracting a star for the inclusion of this over the original album. That said, Howling Pelle can come and scream in my face ANY TIME.

Album started slow and took a hard left into punk, really enjoyed this.

Sounds a bit dated but I’m very fond of the sound of the Hives

I really liked this. It felt like "polished" punk in that all the songs were still high energy and in your face fun, but it felt like the musicians knew what they were doing. It didn't feel like a bunch of emotional youths lashing out, but instead, seasoned artists who just wanted to live in the punk genre. Felt like a "mature" mashup of the offspring and greenday.

Makes me want to buy an iPod. Thoroughly enjoyed this turn of the century pop rock album.

Great compilation but unfair to be on the list.

Fun high energy garage rock, not special but enjoyable

I like the Hives. They are easy to listen to with catchy, punchy songs.

Well I don't know if I'd say that

Damn this was fun

Planned, organised chaos. Stand out tracks - Hate to say I told you so - Main Offender - Supply and Demand - A.K. A. I-D-I-O-T

Fun and energetic. A very easy listen.

Handful of songs I already liked on one album. Enjoyed the emergency public broadcast vibe it had

I was going to complain about how this compilation is a poor choice for representing the Hives, a band I love dearly, but in context this compilation is actually quite important. The funny thing about the Hives is that they were early to the garage rock revival. Hailing from Sweden, they had honed their sound over their first two albums, released in 1997 and 2000 respectively. And while they had done well for themselves in Sweden, they hadn't caught on elsewhere. That is, until the explosion of garage rock revival in the summer of 2001. Between the Strokes' This Is It and the White Stripes' White Blood Cells, Americans wanted nothing more than that fuzzy high-energy rock music. In order to capitalize, their EU label Burning Heart, along with their UK label Poptones, put together this compilation of Hives songs from their first two albums, their a.k.a. I-D-I-O-T EP, and one track that I cannot seem to place. I think this compilation serves as a good primer to the Hives' early material. I'll say now that I think their songs from Veni Vidi Vicious are the better songs, but it's cool to hear Hives songs that don't normally get the same amount of recognition as Veni Vidi Vicious. Additionally, we get a version of Outsmarted that's different from the album version and it's way better here. Okay about the music proper: The Hives have always prided themselves on their fast, high-energy garage rock with simple riffs. It takes on a punk edge that works extremely well. While some songs are more polished than others here, it's still a testament to the sheer driving noise on the Hives' signature sound. It's incredible. If you liked this then Veni Vidi Vicious should be your next stop, followed by Tyrannosaurus Hives. Easily their best work and an incredible showing of the garage rock revival. If you need more proof of The Hives' excellence, seek out their live show Tussles in Brussels, which was recorded at their peak.

Some solid garage rock. Hate to Say I Told You So is a hit. Barely makes a 4 for me.

Literally everything I know about this band comes from Weird Al's polka rendition of Hate To Say I Told You So. That song alone led me to believe these guys were just early 00's radio punk, but the album gets surprisingly harder as it goes on. Super reminiscent of Minor Threat at times. Die, All Right! and Here We Go Again are fucking bangers.

Kort album dus het vliegt voorbij. Prima album van een prima band, maar er mist iets waardoor het voor mij geen topalbum is.

Sucesión de canciones rápidas, con fuerza, guitarreras y con estilo. Para escuchar y animarte

Peak early-2000s garage rock. It’s solid and fast. 4/5

Hey! I thought this list didn't include complications or best of's! You have to salute the genius of Oasis discoverer, Alan McGee to repackage this band to ride the imminent Nu-Garage movement that landed around that time. Great Marketing, great songs by the Hives so this collection made sure a band that would gone unnoticed hit its potential. Tried an true method though as the same was done to AC/DC, the Beatles and heaps of other bands to break them into new markets

well done mate

Loud and fun. Plus really short punchy songs! 12 songs in 28 minutes! If you don’t like song, it’s almost over by the time you’ve realised! Great stuff!

This was some ripping fun garage rock, and if it started at just decent, it seemed to get better with each and every song.

Good punky garage rock.

"Hate To Say I Told You So" is an instant nostalgia hit for me. "Main offender" also rings a bell Overall a quite fun album.

Fantastic compilation of their first two records, I actually own this and remember really enjoying it! It hits all the right notes and still sounds good! Nothing but back to back bangers! Hard to rate seeing as it's sort of a best of not an actual album.

Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Hate to say I told you so, Die, all right, Untutored youth, Aka idiot, Automatic schmuck

An absolute banger of a debut by the Swedish indie rockers. Featuring the manic almost insane energy that would become a signature. This is also a glaring example of the early aught indie rock vibes hitting the international scene. So much fun!

Hey cool! Reminds me strangely to the 60ties and 70ties. Good energy in the songs. A little punky. Coole und spritzige Musik. Hat mir sehr gut gefallen. My New Favorite Band ;-)

Fun and upbeat, typical alt sound of the early 2000s.

Worth lots of listens

Loved the upbeat tempo. Some great songs.

Great collection, better than the albums it came from

Solid listen. Main Offender really brought some nostalgia for me. Dig the upbeat vibes.

A decent pop punk album. Doesn't overstay its welcome.

Great band, great album

this rules

I enjoyed this, but not enough for them to be my new favorite band.

A gem that I’d forgotten about.

The Hives always have some entertaining and energetic songs. Great fun. Surprised that a compilation album made it on this list versus one of their studio albums. 4/5

really enjoyed this album, didn't realise how many hives songs I already knew. 60s vibe but a revival band which was cool - will def listen again. they are in true spirit my new favourite band

Really nice, but to me it feels like they used their full potential in the later records

4.5/5. Amazing contribution to the post-punk revival movement, shoutout Sweden.

Garage punkgarage rockpunk rock, indie. Estuvieron en Valladolid.

Je connaissais un peu ce groupe, contente de me rafraîchir la mémoire, j’aime beaucoup

Veni Vidi Vicious is one of several albums I thought about buying many times during the height of “I Hate To Say I Told You So” being on MTV/VH1 all the time. Very cool stuff, though it’s weird that a compilation album would be eligible for this list…

Wonderfully, enthusiastically stupid.

I asmit to having a preference for The Hives over The Strokes, bur the formula is almost identical. Solid guitar riffs with strong rhythm section driving a frenetic pace, and shouted/chanted rather than sung vocals. This only works when combined with short songs (12 in less than 29 minutes - an average of 2 min 25 seconds). I can't imagine a six minute song by them! Overall an epitome of energy and what punk should have been.

This is a compilation of the Hives’ first two albums. The music comes out of the garage rock revival scene and is clearly influenced by the British alternative scene, Britpop, and most obviously punk. The album is tight and exciting but doesn’t really stand out to me as pushing the boundary. It was quite enjoyable though even if the first track sounds a bit too much like the Blur’s Song 2

Fun post-punk power pop. Not familiar with this band, but this reminds me of Green Dat in a way. I would listen again.

I've heard their biggest hit "Hate to Say I Told You So" but I was unfamiliar with the rest of their discography. Easy to listen to and enjoyable post punk music. Songs are quick and high energy. I'll give this album another listen.

There are some five star songs on here, for sure, but it's a little too one note to get a five all around. Also, what is this, a compilation? The book compiler breaks his own rules once again, heh. Fave track - "Hate To Say I Told You So" is absolutely iconic. Fantastic tune.

I really dig the straight energy coming off this record. The singers voice is killer and the lyrics can be both badass and hilarious sometimes as well. Only complaint is that a few songs feel to quick/incomplete or lack a catchiness to them. 7/10

Fun, Kinks-inspired punk.

Brilliant, although very short. Super catchy, really evocative of the time. Sounds like a bunch of other bands that were about at the same time, but with an added dose of Swedish eccentricity.

Dit is een compilatie album? Snap niet zo goed waarom dat in de 1001 albums you must hear staat. Wel goed album verder :) allemaal dikke schijven eigenlijk.

Solid start to finish. If you like one song you will like the album.

Really strong Album

de har så många hits de jävlarna

Kanondrag

pref automatic schmuck milieu un peu embêtant mais ce reprend vers milieu fin derniere musique très nul pour finir l'album

I really like this album. High energy garage rock revival sounds like it was Strokes era which I can appreciate. Very high energy. A little bit too garage rocky to be a perfect five for me. They have their thing and they don’t really deviate from it. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it I guess. However i like my 2000s garage rock bread buttered a certain way, and that way is influenced by 80s new wave and post punk. This is more stoogey. I can definitely get down with it, but I’m prolly never gonna listen to this one again. Veni Vidi Vicious is better

A hair away from careening off the rails, thumbing their nose at the establishment, Sweden’s loudest band brings back punk sensibility for the 21st century. Howlin’ Pelle lives up to his name.

I was not expecting the first song of this album to appear on this list because it feels like a one hit wonder that shows up in 00s alternative playlists a lot. However, while nothing is quite as good as that song, the rest of the album is still pretty good. Plus I’m pretty sure this is the first greatest hits album I’ve gotten

High energy and fun. Great for short bursts but starts to sound same-y after a while. Short 28 min run time works great for this genre.

Very Punk. Way more Punk than I knew. I hate to say I told you so was a big song when it came out but they didn't catch on in the states. I think these guys would be huge if they came out today.

I’ve kinda been looking forward to this… Hate to say I told you so was an immensely popular single for the band and opens up the album on a solid banger! In main offender he’s almost too screechy vocally but it’s still good (especially that infectious guitar riff). The guitars on supply and demand are very bitty things which I don’t like but the awesome drumming makes up for it. Other than the first song die all right is probably the best blend of sounds so far the verses boarder on dance rock and the chorus/ bridge are both proper rampages stopping for nothing! Untutored youth is a massive burst of anger like I get it but didn’t they have better songs than this? Outsmarted is a good rampage, slightly longer and better guitar work! Mad men starts by giving the impression of a brooding dark track that would’ve been really cool but but those dark and brooding moments are few and the song becomes an average hives rampage. The chorus to here we go again is epic the rest of the song…eh. A.K.A. I-D-I-O-T is very aggressive for the sake of it but I like it. Automatic schmuck has awesome guitars but the lyrics eh the chant at the ends cool I guess. The penultimate track Hail Hail spit n drool is a shortie like really short but unlike the one earlier this deserves a spot and works well next to the mental rampages that has been the album’s second half. The album closes with the hives are law, you are crime it’s not necessarily slow but slower than the others so it works well as a closer. It’s mental and for that reason it’s great, not necessarily music that’s great to criticise but still a 4/5.

Está muy bien, y me han gustado todas las canciones, aunque no hay ninguna especialmente memorable salvo las dos primeras.

good album, more like 3.5 but im feeling generous

Really well-written and produced rock and roll songs.

Well, this is just great fun. Untutored Youth is just the best 90 seconds, and there's a lot of short, sharp silliness to get you through here.

Compilation…

Yeah! Grungy, punky, rocky. Like this kinda shit, distorted vocals, crashy drums and leading guitar strums. Fun. "Hate to say I told you so" clear highlight. "Die, all right!" is also fun.

I’m all about this

Feels like generic pop punk but I enjoy that sound.

Been a long time since I’ve listened to The Hives, just as good as when it came out. Mad Men sounds like an IDLES song

Good, but I'm not convinced it's as great as we thought at the time.

very solid new wave gem suprised i haven’t heard of them

Reminds me how much i used to love this stuff 4

I remember when they came out, riding the indie wave, sounding everywhere and then disappearing from the music landscape. Are two excellent songs worth the place for this list? Hate to say I told you so!

Hate to say I told you so - continuation on the Strokes Is This It, and instantly takes me back to the mid aughts. Love it. Up tempo energy. Main Offender - I'm loving this album for the same reason I blasted Muse, but it's loud and I'm loving it. I think it's because there is a shift in energy/emotion. Probably also nostalgia. Untutored youth/outsmarted - I will admit that the listen can get fatigued listening to nothing but fast song after fast song without a break. Hoping the next song will be a change of pace and show some range. "Slowest" song was track three I think, Supply & Demand. Mad Man - this album sponsored by Molly. Album was a quick, messy, thrill. I loved it, but most likely for nostalgia purposes. 4/5

The first two tracks are well-recognized hits, but I immediately worried that I wouldn’t like a whole album that sounded like them. Luckily, the rest of the album was faster, more urgent, more raucous, and I wound up liking it more than “Hate to Say I Told You So.”

Call me a bee because I want to be in The Hives! This music is energetic with and edge…and organized. To contrast with the Germs the other day who are energetic with…and anarchical. I like The Hives much better. I’m not sure if this being a compilation album should have any effect on my rating. It’s seems to be a bit outside the spirit of the 1001 albums list. However, this is the release that made them well known. It doesn’t matter in the end because all I know is I’m going to come back to this one.

Found it a bit strange a compilation album is on the list, but ignoring that some great songs here, really love the energy and the sound of the Hives.

Solid compilation for a very fun band

It seems like cheating to have a compilation album on this list. But then, this album was always intended as a cheat. The Hives didn't make an impact with their first two albums so they just took the good songs off of those albums, smashed 'em together into a single album and re-released them on a new, 28-minute album. And it worked. They absolutely cheated their way onto the charts. But, cheating aside, "Your New Favorite Band" is a super solid, concentrated, distilled rock album. It's a lot of fun and, at under 30 minutes, it definitely doesn't overstay its welcome. Very enjoyable.

Garage punkgarage rockpunk rock, indie. Estuvieron en Valladolid.

Not bad, not bad... very aggressive :)

Dated but decent

Прикольный альбом. Бодрый, заводной. Нескучный :)

A super fun garage punk record. Not sure why a compilation album is here, but I enjoyed it anyhow. Probably should be replaced by one of their studio albums. Best track: Hate to Say I Told You So

Swedish garage band but this is pretty much straight forward punk with its fast pace and attitude. It's kind of curious why this album was picked since it is a compilation of their albums "Barely Legal" and "Veni Vidi Vicious" and EP "A.K.A. I-D-I-O-T". And why the band did a complilation without any hits? But, this album did reach #7 on the UK charts and was their breakthrough. Good idea. It's hard not to like a band with their singer named Howlin' Pelle Almqvist. The album starts with their most popular song "Hate to Say I Told You" which had a fair bit of play here in States and is the longest song at 3:19. This compilation is ordered in reverse chronological order and you definitely see the improvements as the band aged a bit with songs getting a little more raw and less refined as the album progresses. The names of these songs are classic punk, "Die, All Right!", "Automatic Schmuck" and "Hail Hail Spit N' Drool." I don't know if this album or band breaks any new ground but I bet they were and/or are great live. And, with 12 songs clocking in at 28 minutes with this fast pace, it was welcome relative to other, much longer recent albums I've listened to. Following the Ramones format can never be a bad thing. Can it?

Loved it when it first came out. Different.

Just a short and punky album. 7/10

-Very solid punk rock. Lots of great, fun riffs and tunes -Definitely heard "Hate To Say I Told You So" in 'Weird Al" Yankovic's "Angry White Boy Polka" -He gets going quite fast in "Untutored Youth" -"Hate To Say I Told You So," "Supply And Demand," "A.K.A. I-D-I-O-T," and "Automatic Schmuck" all stood out slightly as great track, but the album is quite consistent.

Indie fun

Thoroughly enjoyed

Really fun

Garage rock at its finest

More punk than I remember, and just good fun.

Enjoyable album, nothing earth shattering (and the strokes are better imo) but it's a bit of fun and at only 28min it's here for a good time, not a long time. 4/5.

At the height of the pop punk trend along comes an actual punk rock band. With more in common with The Clash and Minor Threat to anything the pretend punk bands had, the Hives fast, thrashy jangly guitar is a breath of fresh air.

The Hives were one of the last pure energy and fun rock bands, and this compilation of their first few albums was a hit for a reason. Doesn't overstay it's welcome at a pleasant 28 mins, and leaves you feeling pumped.

Entertaining punky stuff. good riffs, good guitar sound, good fun

Remember seeing The Hives in Brixton around the time this album was released. They were a breath of fresh air in terms of style if not in terms of music. They didn't really kick on after that initial wave of hype, but at the time they seemed fresh and didn't take themselves too seriously at all. This album is full of perfect snotty pop punk shoutalongs

good shit - crunching hard riffs I like a lot

rock!!(??)

They're correct, this is my new favourite band. Great garage sound and energy.

Don't know if this is my new favorite band but certainly a good album.

MegapangAre!! Bara min åsikt!

They rock hard basically. I appreciate the intensity. Also quirky instrumentals. Fun!

2022-01-11. Not in the book! Indie guitar rock meets punk. Great riffs. I approve :)

Pretty good

Rock grunge

Hate to say I told you so was another banger off that Air Guitar compilation I've mentioned in other comments on this. So that has a special place in my heart. Really enjoyed this album, I was so in the right mood for it too. I feel must have been a last of it time before pop punky stuff took a nose dive in 00s

Great stuff. Raw, powerful, Hives. Always been a bit of a throw away 00s band for me but actually are really good.

96. Your New Favourite Band - The Hives 12 tracks. A compilation album? Thinking face It starts big & punchy and just delivers all the way through. It's a good album but I do wonder why @1001_albums_gen have included a compilation. The exception that proves the rule perhaps? 4/5

It's really just not doing anything particularly special. It's simply forgettable

Really fun. Would rate higher in my younger days when I could handle the constant high energy.

didnt hear that much, but it was ok

Ta bueno, las primeras dos temoness “hate to say it told you so” y “main offender” el resto medio olvidable, pero quizá algún que quiera algo movido con mucha guitarra lo escuche.

Contrary to the record's title, they are not my new favourite band, however, this not bad. There were a few tracks in here that I liked. It gives off edgy teen angst rock energy. Favourite Track(s): Untutored Youth, Mad Men, Here We Go Again Least Favourite Track(s): Die, All Right!

# Playlist Track - Die, All Right! # Notes - Kind of a fun one! I might be a bit too old to fully enjoy it. - Full of fun energy and kind of brings me back to some crazy party vibes. It's worth it a listen.

it ok! another one hit wonder album

It did some stuff but was over before I even really locked in

High energy garage band punk for 28 minutes. Just up my ADHD alley.

Rawkus fun. Makes me wish I was younger.

This album is better than a 3stars but not quite a 4 stars. More of a 3.8

nice punk

There’s nothing wrong with this but nothing to elevate it above the pack.

Solid album all the way through, but no songs that really stuck out and made me want to listen to over and over again.

I am generally an advocate of less screaming. Good music, I enjoyed most of the songs

A couple things: 1) Get out of here with this compilation album shit. If you need a compilation album to be considered important, then you shouldn’t be on the list 2) See point 1. 28 minutes long and no variety in song style. Do better The music itself was solid

Ok, not my fave band from the era

Raw Rock

Album court, et heureusement Relativement redondant et, même si il a été au début de la vague rock alternatif, il s’est bien fait dépassé Ça pète un peu trop et je ne me sens pas transporté

Decent.

it’s so quintessentially early 2000’s rock I dig it

vind dit best een leuk album

Kende The Hives niet. Best een vette band. Goed uitgevoerd garage rock revival album.

A fun ride that kept me tapping my feet while I worked

A compilation album is kind of cheating, also, the official list has expunged this from mandatory listening. It's a solid collection of songs, but this wasn't the intended album...

Muy rockerito, me ha molado

Album title is not accurate. This one's decent and I enjoyed listening to it, but it is weird to have a compilation album like this on the project. I kind of feel like it should be disqualified, but whatever. Favorite track: "Main Offender"

Really like The Hives and their sound. They are exceptionally fun to see live. While 'Hate To Say I Told You So' is an outright banger, the rest of the album fails to deliver the same quality as the opening track. There is good energy in the record no doubt, which might partly be why they're fun live. But there are not enough interesting hooks or rhythms to keep the interest up. Without the opening track this would feel quite bland, but now it's a strong 3.

In fact not my new favorite band but I appreciate the suggestion. Fun romp, a little one note on the screamy delivery. Good in short bursts. 3.5

Was vibing with this one but it's a compilation album so it only sort of counts for this list.

It's fine. Super simple and basic Garage rock, but it's got some spunk

It's always surprising when I think how the early-00's Indie Rock boom was developing simultaneously in more than one part of the world. The Hives are a Swedish band, completely unrelated to the American Indie Rock scene of the time, and yet they arrived at a similar Garage Rock Revival sound that dominated a lot of rock music in the angloshpere. And because this album is actually a compilation, some of these songs predate stuff like The White Stripes and The Strokes by a couple of years, and they obviously rode the wave they were early to to become massively successful beyond their homeland. Key tracks: Hate to Say I Told You So

They actually aren’t my new favorite band. I often like high energy music but this is the same rat-a-rat with no subtlety for alot of the album. And the lyrics aren’t interesting enough to make up for the lack of musical variety. They don’t sound angry. It’s just speed for speed’s sake. The first song, their single, is fun but if quickly got monotonous after that one.

Solid garage rock

okayyyy

Compilation album?

Energetic Scandi noise, high octane in smart suits.

Not bad

nice enough

Raw, punky fun. A bit much to take for an entire album. Best if consumed in small doses: three songs at a time, or a cut on a playlist/mixtape.

The Hives – Your New Favourite Band (2001) Day 139 was explosive, but ultimately it didn't leave a lasting mark. The energy was immense from start to finish, which kept the momentum up, but none of the tracks really stood out as memorable masterpieces. It felt a bit one-note compared to the sophisticated layers I've heard recently. I did have a soft spot for the closer, "The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime," which had a great vibey delivery. It’s a decent listen for when you need a high-velocity boost, but for now, it hasn't grown on me enough to go higher. A solid 3/5.

This was a fun sampler intro to the band. May seek out more later.

Pretty average

Always the band you hear and don't know who they are

just fine, 3 stars i guess?
