I tried (and probably failed) to listen to the album with an open mind. I like The Smiths, I really dislike Morrissey. I didn’t particularly enjoy this album, maybe because I couldn’t get past how I feel about Morrissey, but I do think I also just didn’t enjoy the music that much. I definitely prefer his work with The Smiths to his solo stuff. The national front disco could be an excellent track about people being drawn in by the far right, but when Morrissey sings “England for the English” it’s hard to view the song as a critique rather than an endorsement. Similarly when he sings “we are the last truly British people” it’s impossible not to read that in the context of his Xenophobia. All that aside, I think the music just wasn’t massively exciting to me, although there definitely were parts I enjoyed. Fav song: You’re Going to Need Someone on Your Side Least fav: You’re the One for Me, Fatty

I love this album. I haven’t listened to it in years, maybe because my taste in music changed or because I listened to it too many times when I was younger. But after years, I found I still loved it. It’s an album I won’t ever be able to separate from the memory of listening to it when I was young. There was one holiday when this was the only album we could agree on as a family and so it played constantly. Now when I listen to it I can instantly picture the most beautiful coastal drive. To actually talk about the music, I think her voice is gorgeous and the songs are so full of emotion. A real struggle to pick a favourite and least favourite as I enjoyed every song. For some reason I think I will continue to not reach for this album - maybe I simply don’t want to erase the image of that one holiday by listening to it somewhere mundane. Fav song: Take It All (but this changes from moment to moment) Least fav: Lovesong

Liked this one. Some fun songs including some I already knew. Think I maybe preferred it to the other Dire Straits album we’ve had. Fav song: Sultans of Swing Least fav: Six Blade Knife

Enjoyed the first song but thought a lot of the songs went on too long or just weren’t my thing. I liked the guitar instrumental track though. The bits I enjoyed were nice, but I probably wouldn’t listen again as there were just too many bits that didn’t work for me. Fav song: Roundabout Least fav: South Side of the Sky
