Reviews (page 2 of 8)
Ist zwar kein richtiges Album sondern ne Compilation EP. Aber egal. Hives machen immer Stimmung und kannte vieles noch nicht 👑
First 3 Hives albums are all 4.5/5 for me. This collection album is made up of songs from first 2 albums, and an EP that is 5/5. Therefore, this is 5/5, by way of rounding and averaging.
I knew they rocked, but I didn’t know they rocked so consistently and so awesomely hard. 4.5/5
Nice. This is the type of garage punk I like. Short, sweet and to the point. Never listened to this band before but I'll check out the rest of their catalog.
This is the album that got me into the Hives. Wonderful stuff.
Quite a fun album. Pop punk with out the juvenile humor and immaturity. Great stuff.
Still an awesome, fun album High energy, fast, catchy rock n roll
Fucking hell.
Like other of the era, the Hives just get you going, even on a sleepy Sunday Night. This best of / compilation album is a great reminder of the band for those that were around when these were originally released and probably a great primer for those who were not. This album will likely find its way into my rotation.
Nice! Fun, a bit chaotic, but overall, the whole thing was right up my alley. Fun instrumentals, and spot on punk vocals. Loved it! 'Die, All Right!' was my fave from the bunch, but they have quite a few bangers in here!
Love some good short punk rock
Really great album. Loved it
Love the Hives - but this is a greatest hits album and so shouldn't count
Pretty much blown away. The most energetic, effective punk I’ve seen, 4.85
The energy is off the charts. Every song is faster than the next, and its aggression is awesome.
Fun punk rock album here. Good energy. 4.5 gonna round up.
Robert Dimery: "Okay everyone, we need 1001 essential albums, but NO compilations, because that's just cheating.......... Except for that album by The Hives because that shit is the TITS!!!!"
When i need to get in the mood, i just turn on one of their albums, and mostly it's this exact record
Really love the high energy and loud noise of this album. Howlin’ Pelle is a phenomenal vocalist and I think it really makes the album. I’ll definitely be coming back to this one in the future. The Vibe: You and the boys are out raising hell.
Best so far!
On the one hand, it's a compilation album, which i feel like should be a no-no for this kind of list. On the other hand, it fucking rocks.
When I was in high school, I was in a band that covered Bloodhound Gand, Blink 182, etc. I remember playing a gig where bands from all the local schools came together to perform, and one of them was called Amplex. They were all around 12 years old and covered Hate To Say I Told You So and outperformed everybody in my eyes. They rocked! Anyway, memories aside, I love this album. It’s the perfect blend of raw passion, yet still with plenty of melodies to avoid getting messy. Damn, The Hives are good.
yeah babyyyyy 5/5
I love this band, idk if it’s just the mood I’m in or what, but these guys kinda just hit that pop/rage funk vibe for me
I'm really confused why this album exists and why it's on the list instead of Veni Vidi Vicious. Anyway, I digress. I was in high school at this time, absolutely loving the garage rock revival. Someone told me, "Hey, you'd probably like The Hives!" so I went out and bought VVV, having never listened to them before. I instantly loved it and it was the soundtrack to my summer in 2002. I remember putting this CD in my Walkman and riding my bike listening to it, hoping it wouldn't skip. Kids these days will never understand our struggle, man. I'm not sure why I stopped listening to The Hives because this was such a great trip down memory lane.
hate to say i told you so main offender supply and demand outsmarted here we go again automatic schmuck the hives are the law, you are crime
So much better than I remembered. My dad hates the hives which makes me like them even more. Also full of gold so, that's awesome.
hammer
Great!
I liked this group for a long while but I never stopped to listen to their albums. It was very good !
Amazing album. I wouldn’t call it an album, though; it’s more of a compilation. We already got a Motörhead live album as an album, so I don’t really blame Dimery for his choice. Definitely gonna listen to more of The Hives soon. 4.9/5 Fav: “Die, All Right!”, “Main Offender” Least Fav: None
I do agree that it's weird to put a freaking compilation album here, I thought it's not allowed. Anyway, The Hives are pretty bold to tell me that they'll be my new favorite band. But after hearing their hits here, I think it might be true. With a fun, rocking punk that is not annoying, this album is among the few punk albums that I enjoyed from start to finish. Anyway, it's a 5/5 experience. I don't really care if it's not supposed to be here, it's not the album's fault.
Great punk vibes
10/10 I’m surprised that I love Swedish garage rock this much, but damn is it a great rock album
Great early 2000's rock album. Very punk, pretty alternative. HTSITYS is a classic album but Main Offender and Automatic Schmuck are also great.
I’m a big fan of The Hives and have seen them live. Some real belters on this album!! 😎🎸🥁🎼⭐️
Real cool
High energy while still being very catchy, solid instrumentation and great vocals. Best album I've heard on this list in quite a while. Ez 4.75 rounded up
I've always liked the Hives. Their sound is so honest and fresh to me even now. Not the most musically diverse, best produced or cannily written lyrically but good to groove to. There's so much energy here.
Hate to say I told you so was amazing
Discount Jefferson Airplane
somehow i've never seen these play.
A colossal masterpiece that hurtles its sexy ass towards you like a bottle rocket. It's a fascinating fantasy fuck that you never thought you'd get to experience. Your wildest dreams are fulfilled and you just can't wait to phone your mummy and tell her that you've just become a man. The Hives are a heroic bunch of scallywags with tongues firmly in their cheeks and fingers firmly in your pussy. It's a 1000 mile an hour lightning bolt that penetrates you in a way you haven't been since Uncle Roger buggered you senseless behind the shed when you were just a boy.
I've long enjoyed this album - a shade under thirty minutes of Scandi-garage ramalama bristling with hooks and attitude. I've heard 'Hate To Say I Told You So' often down the years but I still ain't bored with it.
One of my favourite bands, great compilation after their break out the previous year
For a taut twenty-eight minutes, The Hives do everything in their power to inform us of their status in our lives and they do so with a breakneck pace and unceasing tenacity the likes of which haven't been around in quite some time. In an era where the "The" bands were returning with fervor, a little bit of a Swedish shake wouldn't have hurt to have in the bunch and it didn't, for this blast of sheer adrenaline harking back to the punk era (the aforementioned shortness of the album) was what was needed to have those declare The Hives what they told us they'd be.
Really really enjoyed this one. Reminded me a lot of the Clash, but had it's own distinctive punk flare. Will be coming back to this for sure.
Technically, this is a compilation of tracks from the first two albums of the Swedish garage rock band (named *Barely Legal* and *Veni Vidi Vicious*), here aimed at the international market. And since those two albums are already pretty neat, said compilation is just phenomenal, very logically. I've never bought it since I already had those first two albums at home, brilliantly mixing retro-garage aesthetics with a modern punk energy that makes the whole thing irresistible and far more efficient than 80% of that early-naughts rock revival thing. For a second I was just wondering if the cover shown in here was the one of a later record from The Hives. Glad to see I have nothing to explore that I didn't already know today, given that I'm a little short on time... The other good news is that I can now include the Buzzcock's compilation *Singles Going Steady* in my list (conspicuously absent from the 1001 albums book), given that it was a very similar situation--it was a compilation that was aimed at the American market this time, more than a decade earlier. But everyone a little serious about punk rock knows it's one that became more iconic than the albums somehow. Pretty sure that a lot of people feel that way about The Hives' *Your New Favorite Band*, even if I don't. And just because this other compilation allows me to use only one slot for The Hives (and save some space for other acts), I'm glad to include it in my own list--and this even if I'm a little saddened that some of the other great cuts of the first two albums are missing from the collection suggested here. Those three amazing hits "A.K.A. I.D.I.O.T", "Main Offender" and "Hate To Say I Told You So" are just the tip of the iceberg here. Now you know, at least. :) Number of albums left to review or just listen to: a little more than 500, I've temporarily lost count here Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: approximately a half so far (including this one). Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: a quarter. Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): the last quarter
Gets in and gets out. A big, raucous blast.
Do I understand some of the criticism here? Yes sir I do. Do I honestly want anything more out of an album than an insanely tight 30 minutes of high-energy rock? No sir, I do not.
Garage punk rock. Brutal. Vinilo.
Dedo no cu e gritaria
Vlijmscherpe, vinnige gitaren. Strakke drums. Energie voor 100 man
Hate to Say I told you so and Main offender would put any album to at least four stars. A treat. Short sweet. Hard hard rock. That was awesome. Five stars.
Man I wish I had better musical taste when this album came out. I could have saved a lot of money on bad CDs. This is great from top to bottom. I really missed the post-punk boat.
i can see them becoming my new favourite band sometime lol
Fuck yes - big fat riffs, pedal boards the size of football fields and that weird mic distortion filter - the yard stick for the frenetic early 2000s indie rock golden years. Possibly the first recorded example of someone using the term "send it" in Die, All Right!. Also think this is the first compilation album I've come across - interesting distribution method to break into the market.
Kicks ass.
Ridículamente bueno, no mamen.
It's a shame that The Hives album included on here is a compilation. Either of their first two albums would've served the purpose just as well. Still, full of stupid bangers and a lot of fun.
I can't ethically give five stars to what's essentially an early greatest hits compilation, when any of the early Hives' records could have been chosen. Why the curator went with this, I don't know. With that out of the way, The Hives are perhaps the best rock and roll band out there now. Their live shows are a spectacle to be seen, the songs are short and sweet blasts of frenetic energy, and they have just enough ego to have it compliment their talent without overshadowing it. These guys are great. Catch them live when you can.
Just some good ole garage rock n punk from the Hives. Fun, energetic, loud, and quick. It’s got attitude and humor, gets wild without going overboard, and stays accessible without being compromised. A good time to be had by all.
Pretty cool album. Love his voice. First two songs, and Die, Alright! were my favorite. 7.2/10.
This throws off the same energy as last week in New York, when the Knicks won. A throbbing crowd that appears to be moving in all directions at once, but actually has synced up and shares one heartbeat in the moment. Intense. Wild. Ecstatic.
A great start to what is still an excellent band. They just have that right mix of reference and not taking themselves too seriously.
I dug it! Would've like a bit more variety but enjoyed the album front to back.
Big fan, love this garage rock
A collection of pretty good songs but I'm not sure a compilation belongs on the list
I really enjoy The Hives, as I’m quite a big fan of the 2000s garage rock revival. I’ve seen The Hives multiple times, and they put on a great live show. Their energy at live shows doesn’t always translate to their records, but what can you do? This album is quite decent and showcases The Hives well. However, their strongest songs aren’t on this record. Still, the album starts with two bangers: “Hate to Say I Told You So” and “Main Offender.” The rest of the songs don’t pique my interest too much, but the album has a lot of attitude. Also, bonus points for being short. The short length and the two strong opening tracks mean I’m going to give it a weak 4 stars.
great garage rock album. lots of energy. quite the weird release to show on here since it seems to be a compilation? Amazing band but kind of a weird record to put on here. Veni Verdi Vicious or Tyrannosaurus Hives are the ways to go
why is it a compilation? i like it though
I don't know much about this post-2000 garage band revival thing, but I like it.
Ok
Fun album with some great tunes on it. Enjoyed listening to it.
Strange pick for this list, as it's a compilation album. Contains songs from Veni Vidi Vicious including their breakout single Hate To Say I Told You So. The truth is that Veni Vidi Vicious is probably just fine on its own as a sample of their work. Basically the band takes raucous early classic rock similar to Louie Louie, Twist and Shout, or Wild Thing and amps it up with a punk-flavored contemporary edge. Frantic, ferocious, and tongue-in-cheek - screamy shouty vocals, calculated and curated stellar rock riffs. A little like the Strokes or White Stripes but much more unchained. Also reminds me a bit of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. This is good stuff.
I had a lot of fun with that
My new favourite band-at least for today.
Pretty much one idea. Not even a new one. But beautifully executed. Christmas is extended for another day. 4*
Fantastic energetic
Pretty unusual and cool.
Good punk
Great energy
Jättebra. Snabbt och svettigt, svårt att inte gilla. Musik behöver inte vara så komplicerat, ibland räcker det med att det är precis så här. Pang på bara. Saknar gamla The Hives. De var verkligen något speciellt!
Pretty hard to complain about. Angry garage-punk, completely air-tight. A little odd that it's a compilation, but let's be honest: would it be any more meaningful if it was a true album? Vicious, loud, and fun. Nuff said.
# Album Name: Your New Favourite Band # Artist: The Hives # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Banger. Love the energy and rawness of the albu, I remember these guys coming out at the time. Had quite an impact. Not sure if it should be on the list but i enjoyed it. # Top Tunes: 1-5 # Would I listen to it again? Yes
Great early 2000s revivalist garage rock infused with heavier modern elements.
Not quite my new favorite band, The Hives are still a group I'm happy to've learned about, if for nothing else than their spitting simplicity & their not-too-abrasive-but-still-effective-edge. W/ heavier drums than The Strokes, fewer rhythmic innovations than the Arctic Monkeys, & less melody than The Libertines, The Hives are both a part of this milieu but really something separate, primarily b/c they're more punk: 'Untutored Youth,' 'Outsmarted,' 'Mad Man.' 'Stuck in the ways of being an ass / & I got a lot of nerve that I'm ready to pass.' I wouldn't say they're as politically pertinent as the best of the punk scene, but they got something to say & I basically like how they get it across. 'I put up w/ being laughed at / 'Cause I put up w/ being me.'
(Très) simple et (très) efficace.
Pretty good (but not enough to be my new favourite band)! ★★★★
It's a greatest hits album and it's what, 20 minutes long??? That's not punk bro, that's just sad. Yeah sure it slaps, but it's also cheating. Take this 4 and fuck off.
I liked this a lot more than I expected. Fun, upbeat, well played, nicely produced. Somehow not too loud. Normally I despise modern bands attempting the old punk style. But this kind of works. Should hate. Can’t. 4/5
Great punk record!
rock duro, tipo blink, greenday, offspring, bastante animadas, distorsión, sonidos raros, mucho instrumento, bastante bien, 4/5
Favorite Track: Hate To Say I Told You So
Not my new favorite band but good anyway
4.2
The Hives are what happens when The Strokes and The White Stripes have a one night stand, accidentally have a baby, and the baby gets neglected and acts out. (Even though it doesn't seem like it, that's a compliment)
4/2/26. High energy, punk like music from an era I grew up in. Hate To Say I Told You So is a certified classic for me; songs are short but deliver a punch.
Visai nieko, tranki gera muzika.
I have heard of the hives I have heard Your new favourite band I have heard the singles. Good raw/garage rock/punk. Deserves to be here.
Simple, thrashy, and fun to listen to. Doesn't need to be more than that. Although whether this classifies as an 'album' I'll leave to the more pedantic reviewers.
Simple, fast and loud. Not the most intricate but good fun for the span of an album.
I was surprised, because I've expected it to be more alternative/indie. Still didn't liked some modern sounds, but some nice fun garage punk
Just good fun, not earth shattering or pushing the boundaries but great rock.
Great but should a greatest hits be on here?
I am happy I discovered them later in life, because I have something to look forward to. I'm not old or anything but hey nobody makes music like this anymore. Great record!
This is good stuff, and there should be more compilation albums in the book. Imagine how good a Monkees compilation album could be rather than the weird choice that actually made it in. All the songs are the same , but they're short and punchy and the album is here and gone before it gets annoying.
Short, sweet, and rockin. Love the Hives, and never sat down to just listen to an album so this was fun. They really get the idea of putting out fun quick riffs that rock. Easy peasy. Digging in you can definitely sense a little bit of Queens of the Stone Age, so not sure if they inspired the Hives or vice versa. In any event, cool stuff
so nostalgic
I enjoyed the album, short fast and punchy. Have always found lead vocalist Howling Pelle's voice interesting, particularly on opening track.
Liked: Hate To Say I Told You So, Main Offender, Die, All Right!, Outsmarted, Here We Go Again, A.K.A I-D-I-O-T Added: Hate To Say I Told You So, Outsmarted, Here We Go Again
Typically it’s meh if a band puts their band’s name in a song title, but for some reason it works great with The Hives. Fun. Despite this being released in the 21st century it made me want to listen to this album on cassette driving around in a beat up car.
The Hives are a fun band. This was a fun listen. A little weird to choose a compilation album, but still a fun time.
I had Deep Purple yesterday, so I was grateful for some punk rock today.
This is good rock and roll, uh, music, as Adam Scott would say. The sheer power and loudness of their style keeps me coming back to the Hives. They’re still delivering - their 2025 album rips hard. Sure, the songs sound much the same, but then I’ve been listening to AC/DC for nearly 50 years, so who cares?
Way better than The Vines
Not quite my new favourite band but still pretty good. (I had heard many of these songs before as well).
Really fun but a little samey
yeah cool but didnt know best of albums were "allowed"
Boom! (but not Tick Tick Boom) Some Swedish party rock for you guys now, this hits like a train and keeps on rolling. Excellent stuff, my only complaint is it's only 28 minutes long. Who are you, the Ramones??
Punk rock. Hate to Say I Told You was popular. iTunes commercial or something?
My first thought when I saw it come up was why was this compilation included in the 1001 Albums book. Then I read some more and found that this was the album that broke The Hives into the UK market. It certainly bears repeating that Robert Dimery and his team are predominantly British, so for a lot of them, Your New Favourite Band was their introduction to the Swedish garage rock revival group. It wasn’t like over here in the States, where our introduction to The Hives was with the re-release of Veni Vidi Vicious. As far as a greatest hits record for this early in the band’s career, it’s a solid outing. Obviously, the most refined-sounding tracks are the ones from Veni Vidi Vicious placed towards the front, particularly with the one-two punch of “Hate to Say I Told You So” and “Main Offender”. I certainly got a kick out of the sampling of tracks from Barely Legal and the A.K.A. I-D-I-O-T EP, with how much more frenetic and straightforward punk the band used to be in their humble beginnings. If anything, between hearing these tracks and later output like “Tick Tick Boom”, The Death of Randy Firzsimmons, and The Hives Forever Forever The Hives, it is evident that the band has continued to evolve their sound while staying true to the theatricality and raw intensity in their performance. It kind of makes me wish we got a more updated compilation from them. Though the feeling is probably moot, as Your New Favourite Band is no longer included in subsequent editions of the book. Still, it was a fun romp through The Hives’ early hits. Their music is certainly worth checking out.
Who cares if it’s a blend of their first few albums if they are just trying to grow their presence. Fact is that this is a true blend of power pop and punk. It’s aggressive, catchy and fun.
Now that's rock n' roll
Lots of fun but cacophonous
It was pretty solid
Rating: 7.5/10 Love the energy!
A good quick rock record
One track was ok
I wasn't in a spot to get to know new music this year, 2001, so kind of missed it. Really like this
8 / 10
riddle me this, 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You DIe (if that's even your real name): first, you tell me that compilation albums aren't included in your list of offerings, but then you turn around and give me this, a compilation CD. that's curious! as it turns out, this is yet another symptom of the book's (unfortunate) British-ness. you see, the first two albums by these Swedish garage rock revivalists (Barely Legal and Veni Vidi Vicious) were issued in their home country, the US, and a couple other markets here and there, but not the UK. so, for most people in the British Isles (as well as Canada, Australia, and parts of the EU), this 2001 compilation was the first Hives album they ever saw in record shops. it showcases tracks from those first two albums, plus their a.k.a. I-D-I-O-T EP, in a compact 28-minute package. we begin with "Hate to Say I Told You So" from VVV, arguably the Hives' signature song, and continue from there with guns ablaze. in comparison to the sleek precision of their American garage revival compatriots, the Strokes, the Hives are far more unruly and messy, but no less catchy! Howlin' Pelle Almqvist is one of my favorite lead singers in this era of rock music; he shout, shrieks and wails his way through every track here in a way that's reminiscent of Iggy Pop with the Stooges. I also appreciated the chemistry between guitarists Nicholaus Arson and Vigilante Carlstroem: the stop-start riffs, the alternating use of sticky leads and just straight-up noise barrages! bassist Dr. Matt Destruction and drummer Chris Dangerous make for a formidable rhythm section, although half the reason I'm even bringing them up is because this band has some of the funniest stage names I've ever heard. you can definitely tell this was cobbled together from multiple preexisting albums; from song to song, you can detect little changes in engineering techniques, microphone placement, mixing, all that. even still, it's pretty hard for me to dislike the sound the Hives crafted across this era of their career. their combination of high-octane, messy punk energy with insanely memorable riffing and song structures is certainly something to behold. light 8/10.
This is pretty good. High energy music. I like it. This is not really and album but a compilation. The songs I enjoyed the most are probably "Untutored youth" and the instrumental one: "The Hives are law, You're crime". In any case, the more I listened to it, the more I like it. And, by the way, this stuff must be great in concert.
An absolute classic and proof simple can work. Best-Mad man Worst-Untutored youth
Not usually a great lover of compilations/best ofs but this really hit. Great raw indie/punk crossover. Very high energy throughout. Punchy collection of songs
Still slaps you in the face as hard as…good god this is 25 years old.
This is a compilation of their first couple of albums which makes it a strong album, but i does raise a question about whether this should be included in this list. I'm not going to think about it too deeply. It is a good fun listen
Totally 60-70s punk revival ultra fast riffs
Zabavila sam se i to je s ovakvim albumima glavno. Nema veze što je kompilacija što se mene tiče. Sviđa mi se energija što je mislim realno i glavna stvar na koju su išli. Brz, kratak, zabavan. Nemam se šta žaliti.
Never heard of these guys, really liked the record. I'm generally a fan of punk and post punk and this is post post punk.
I’ll just pretend that this is one of their good full length studio albums and give it a 4
Enjoyed this super fun.
3.5
The reason I loved this record so much when it first came out was that it was essentially a compilation of all their previous releases. At the time, I was longing to find a band I'd never heard of that had a rich back catalogue that I could explore, and The Hives were that band, and this was that record.
I was 14 when this came out, and listened to a lot of Hives. Agree with others that Veni Vidi Vicious should be on this list instead. Solid 4.
predobroooo bas ima vajb garage rock dece prepuno energije malo mi se ne pise trenutno al jako dobro
From the opening chords on the very first song, I knew I would like this album. Every song is a tight little banger. These guys would have been awesome on a three-way bill with the Clash and the Who
dit is oprecht wel heel leuk! zitten leuke nummers tussen
More compilation albums should be on this list, at least for the lesser-known bands. Showcase their great stuff and cut the chaff.
I had no idea they were from Sweden, which sent me down a linguistics rabbit hole about why garage rock doesn’t really function in Swedish.
Listened while playing Skate. and really put me in the mood! Might not listen again though
I should not like this band. They're punk, but they have enough 2000s European indie on them to make it work for me. Plus they always sound like they're having a blast. I love it. I know a bunch of singles and their 2023 album, which is awesome. Listening to this compilation just feels like anyone seeing this band is having one of the best nights of their lives.
Not my new favorite band, but one I'm glad to have given a listen to. By the time "Die, All Right!" kicked in, I was all-in. Sloppy club rock with a punk edge. Some tracks reminded me of The Damned, others were more like 7 Seconds.
Not too bad
I was trying to find if I liked them before. I like the lead vocal and for some reason the album really suits my mood recently. Good punk rock. It’s like the Greek aubergine lasagna, it’s different and special and very good too. But it’s also very close to your daily life, you can have it every day and then get sick of if, and you stop having for a year or two and then you realise you might still like it. That’s what this album gives me.
i think this is my favorite type of punk rock. its quick, its fun, and there is a lot more variety than some other mainstream punk bands. these guys rock pretty hard.
I love this style! Quick, fast, and loud. 2-minute long songs where you get in, fuck shit up, and get out. In a world of 3 hour long movies and deluxe extended edition records, I will always appreciate a 90 minute movie or 30 minute album.
The first three albums are GREAT. Why is there a compilation album of theirs on this list? I'm really struggling with how to rate this because of that... Personal enjoyment: 5/5 Relevance to this list: 1/5, because they should include the actual albums, especially with how many Blur and Elvis Costello albums are on here.
7.5/10. They're not my new favourite band. They're not better than TOOL. This is still pretty good, though.
I keep forgetting how good Hate to Say I Told You So is. The garage rock revival was a good time. I should listen to the rest of their discography. I've heard it's more of this, but that's not bad.
Great fun! It benefits from being a very short album
Enjoyed it a lot, good vibes and recognised a few of the songs from my FIFA days.
I want to scream and smash things. I guess I like it.
Pretty decent punk
A banger of a garage rock album from my youth! They were everywhere off the back of this and their following record for a while, and seem to have taken off again recently. They clearly dont take themselves seriously and sound like band of mates enjoying themselves.
Ah so you like indie rock do you? Definitely heard many of the tracks before. Nice and quick, listened through twice. Loads of energy but each song has a distinct feeling. Loads of reverb in Hate To Say I Told You So. Whatever happened to The Hives?
I was never really into punk rock, but man was this a good discovery!
It is groundbreaking, brilliant, peak artistry? No. It is big, sloppy, noisy and brash? Yes. Did I have fun listening to it? Also yes.
Very energetic, mercifully short. Wouldnt call it my new favourite band but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
Well, not quite my new favourite band, but i do really like this chaos. Not as good as The Strokes, and better than the Vines who were around at the same time. This is noisy garage rock with Scandinavian attitude and takes the best bits from their debut album and EP to create a solid sounding short album. I love the chaos and urgency in this. Great stuff!
Quick and to the point. Every single track and the album as such. It's a compilation, though, so... No 5/5 even though the tracks themselves would warrant it, but can't go awarding compilations a full score because they're basically cheating.
I'm very partial to this kind of punk music, for some reason. It’s very simple, but the riffs are great, the songs are energetic, and the lyrics are fun. I probably would’ve enjoyed it less if it were a bit longer. But as it is, although there’s nothing particularly impressive, this album is short and sweet and very engaging.
Not my new favourite band, not even an old favourite band. But they’re catchy and fun and fast.
Maybe not my actual new favorite, but this was great. Punchy, tight, assured. Left me wanting more.
I genuinely thought I was listing to one long song... but then I realized I was track 3. Look, this rocks pretty hard, but it all kind of sounds the same to my old, curmudgeon ears. Solid rock & roll album, though.
Raucous garage punk.
Rocking garage rock music from the 2000s. Hate to Say I Told You So is a classic.
Fun
Som cru, potente, divertido... Letshuoer D13.
They definitely did not become my new favorite band. But I did enjoy their energy, and the music is good. Solid album
"Die All Right" was recommended to me a long time ago by Spotify, back when I was still doing my music show with my friend. It was (and still is) in the playlist of songs I was gonna play on the show. This isnt the album that I heard it on though, I first listened to it on Veni Vidi Vicious! That album and this one share some songs, but they are both great in any case!
Absurdly short album, especially for a compilation but the songs are so good.
Solid rock album
Fajne bardzo. Taki punk rock, który w sumie lubię. Mogłoby być sountrackiem do THPS. 4/5
In 2000, the Hives perfected the punk rock equivalent of a roller coaster straining not to derail itself, and they have largely maintained that delicate balance for a quarter of a century. A miracle.
I always heard a lot of 2000s indie artists talk about how The Hives were the greatest live band working at that time and I didn't believe them and then I saw them and then I got it. And then I read that this was essentially a greatest hits compilation designed to get them to hit it big in the UK and I thought "there's no way they could get a bunch of pre-Strokes garage rock songs to sound like that and make it work" and guess what? I should have trusted The Hives again.
Fun, raucous, romp which at 28 mins doesn’t outstay its welcome. For that reason it scrapes a 4.
Decent
Mikil orka! Örugglega geggjað að vera á tónleikum með þeim!
Er ekki smá ósanngjarnt að safnplata sé inní þessu? Hún náði mér samt.
Exactly what daft lad indie should sound like
Loving it, makes me want to go fast and push some people around.
Little tough because I started listening at 7 am, but overall went hard. I feel like bo0ob would like this one.
Cool
rockt van eerste tot laatste noot...plaatje dat niet verveelt 4,5 sterren
Seeing a sub 30 minute album puts a smile on my face right away. "Hate To Say I Told You So" is a bop. It's also by far the most listened to song on Spotify, so hopefully it doesn't all fall apart from here. "Main Offender" and "Die, All Right" both have me moving my head a little too. "Here We Go Again" has a fun little riff. They're not doing anything new, but it's definitely fun. "A.K.A. I.D.I.O.T" also has some fun guitar. These guys have a lot of Green Day energy. I enjoyed the album. I don't think it was very innovative but they did it all well. 7/10
4/5 Best Track - "Hate To Say I Told You So"
I actually listened to this album a good amount in middle school. Still hits hard.
Much of it sounds the same
8/10
Despite knowing that “Is This It” by The Strokes is the better album, I always think of this album as the prime example of the early 2000s “The” band craze. Pleasantly surprised by how well this holds up. It goes! Just about the maximum amount of thrash I like in an album.
Great memory of the early 2000’s. The music is fast and fun. I’m not sure if it’s a 3 1/3 or 4. There are some great songs but a few duds.
Almost too screamy but most of the songs were pretty enjoyable. I strangely like the lyricless last song and wish they had expanded on it.
kinda cheating with the compilation. Good energy in the songs Will I listen to again: 5%
I like the Hives. This is categorised as a “compilation album” on Spotify. If I remember rightly, it’s because it’s an almagamation of their first two albums that were only released in their native Sweden. Anyway, the singles are great: “Hate to say I told you so, “Die,Alright” and the album tracks are okay. Fun!
Fun stuff.
I love how this list does weird British things even when it doesn't need to. Why include the Hives U.S.breakthrough album, Vida Vita Vitcious, when you could break your own rule about not including compliations to include a Hives compliation album, just because it was created to "boost awareness of the band in the UK." Still, their music is good.
Pop punk fun.
4 etoiles juste parce que ce n<est pas leur meilleur. Mais maudine que ça rock!
The Hives are law
Not sure if this is really essential. But it's a lot of fun! Strange choice, of course, including a compilation instead of e.g. "Veni, Vedi, Vicious"
NCAA football vibes
The Hives are one of the best live bands I've seen - this record has all the jams.
solid album
Yeah, it’s fun, I like fun, alright? I like a best of, I like being told what to listen to. Shoot me, this is a good band and they have bangers. 4.0/5.0 Best Song: Supply And Demand
Hate to Say I Told You So 4 Main Offender 3.8 Supply and Demand 3.8 Die, All Right! 3.6 Untutored Youth 3.4 Outsmarted 3.4 Mad Man 3.2 Here We Go Again 3.6 A.K.A.I-D-I-O-T 3.5 Automatic Schmuck 3.4 Hail Hail Spit N' Drool 3.3 The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime 3.3 Score: 3.525
Not my New Favourite Band but still a nice swedish band, nice to know more than one song now
I just had to listen to the monstrosity that is Slipknot, by Slipknot. When I first started this album, I thought that on the scale of angsty teenage boy music, it rates better. But somewhere around Untutored Youth I realized that I’m actually enjoying it. So I’ll take it off the angsty teenage boy metric and give it a straight 4. But I’ll note that my teenage boy isn’t a fan of this (or of Slipknot).
Listening to this album appears to have a very practical benefit. Back in 2001 when I played this on my Sony Discman I'd knock 2-3 minutes off my usual walk time into university due to the extra pep it put in my step. 25 years later listening on my usual commute into work, and traffic was lighter than usual and my drive time about 5 minutes shorter. In both cases I had a smile on my face. Got to knock a star off for this being a compilation of their first 2 albums and an EP, but this is great stuff and I can't wait to see The Hives live for the first time later this year.
Not listened to this in years. Forgot how much fun they were. A blast.
The only compilation album on the list? Veni, Vini, Vicious may have kept things in order, including a compilation of the first two albums feels like an unfair advantage. But, no matter. The Hives were nothing short of a force of nature as a live band 20 years ago, and their frantic take on punk/garage rock can be electrifying. 'Main Offender' the most primal and direct among them. A fantastic opening hook. It strikes me listening again how much like the Kinks' early singles this sounds; chord based riffing, distorted, reverbed guitar and raucous vocals (complete with scream). As far as the garage revival goes, the Hives deliver hyperactive swagger; a knowing arrogance that is meant to be comical; and clean but frantic chord-based riffing. It's far from original, and they've only got one gear. But these one-trick ponies keep churning it out. It's tongue in cheek, it's crowd pleasing, it's fast, it's riff-laden, it bloody great fun.
I didn’t always know what they were saying, but I knew what they were saying. You know what I’m saying?
Absolute classic
Started with a track that took me back instantly… then it made me think that if I’m going to listen to this, I might as well listen to punk. Like what’s the point of this genre, y’know? And then… I got the point. The middle tracks were awesome. Nice album.
I never heard this band, but I love it! Great energy and great sound.
Was suprised to see a compilation album in the list. Ofcourse every track is solid. Would be embarrassing if it weren't. Energetic album from start to finish. Short and powerful. Deserved a higher rating, but I feel like a compilation album in this list is a bit cheating. Also false advertisement: They're not my new favourite band
I mean they were my new favourite band for awhile. They mostly do that one thing but they do it pretty well. Good jumping around music.
I dislike that it's not a real album, but it's a good collection of songs and I liked listening to it.
Went into Your New Favourite Band thinking I was in for more indie rock, but got hit with some gritty garage punk instead — and I’m not mad about it. My only previous exposure to The Hives was Weird Al jamming part of the opener in “Angry White Boy Polka,” so this was a fun discovery. What really stood out was how strong the back half of the album is. From “AKA IDIOT” to the final track, it just rips. You can definitely hear the influence of bands like NOFX, Bad Religion, and early Blink-182, but with a cool Swedish twist. “Die, All Right!” was a standout too. These guys might not be my new favorite band, but they’re definitely in the rotation now.
I love the Hives more than is actually necessary. Punk rock the way god intended - fast, loud, snotty, ironically dumb, fun. The band can PLAY, and they hold nothing back. Another old favorite.
I liked this! Would definitely listen again
Really enjoyed that. Like these guys.
Good
Fav: Hate To Say I Told You So Least Fav: Supply And Demand Strange that it’s a compilation instead of a standard album, but I like it enough to let it slide. I was worried every song would sound the same but they’ve done well to keep it unique, overall a quick and fun time
1st album
They were (and I believe still are) an amazing live band. Howlin Pelle is a true provocateur/entertainer. I loved their two first albums which are compiled here, but I lost interest quickly afterwards. Partly because my taste changed and partly because they became a bit robotic on follow up releases. At their best they are a vibrant joyous echo of garage rock originators and obvious inspirations like ”The Sonics” (which in my book probably is the peak of rock music - the perfect encapsulation of youthful energy).
Already fucked with the hives heavily, banger
Very much a Swedish take on the White Stripes/Strokes-style rock of the time: maybe not quite getting it, but making up for it with immaculate production and catchy songwriting and an injection of pop-punk. They're also amazingly fun live: they were the first band I saw at Glastonbury 2013 and they knocked my socks off.
Okay
Nice and short
The early 00s were really something, weren't they?
Good solid punk, good collection
Great fun collection of rock songs.
Okay on a relisten I think this album is prettty coooool. They have a sort of energy to them that puts them above other 3-star okay-sounding rock bands I've heard so far.
Unexpectedly fun! Pure, raw headbanging energy to turn your brain off to for a half hour or so.
5 at the front, 3 at the back. A gentleman's 4.
13/05/2025 I didn't mind this album. Short and sweet.
This shit rocks.....Love the 'garage punk' sound. Trying to think why I never got into these dudes - probably listening to a lot more rap in the early aughts - and The Strokes were my go-to 'garage rock revival' guys. Will probably check out more of The Hives now. Thanks generator! 4.5 stars
I thought the list avoided compilation albums. Either way, the first 4 tracks are some of the most hollow 21st century modern rock out there. After that, when they lean more into the punk side, it gets really good.
Kolejny spoko punk. Ale jednak w połowie albumu pojawia się lekka zamuła niestety.
Small aside rant: there should be no “best of” collections on here. Those albums are just the hits cherry picked by record companies to be put out for easy money. If anything, Veni Vidi Vicious was right there. If you’re going to put the Hives on the list, put an actual album. Not the weird “best of”. Regardless, this was good. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel or anything and maybe I wouldn’t consider it “must do before dying” material. But it’s under a half-hour of early 2000’s garage punk rock. It’s a harmless good time. I just wish it was an actual record. Favorite track: A.K.A. I-D-I-O-T Other hits: Main Offender, Hate To Say I Told You So, Automatic Schmuck, Die, All Right, Untutored Youth
The Hives bring me right back to playing old Madden and Fifa games. These games used to have banging soundtracks, and the Hives are no exception. Best Songs: Hate To Say I Told You So, A.K.A. I-D-I-O-T, Hail Hail Spit N' Drool Worst Songs: Automatic Schmuck
3.5 out of 5
This album is pretty great. I wasn't into The Hives when this was out, but they've grown on me over the decades, so it was cool hearing this whole album start to finish. It's got a lot of raw energy and playfulness, so I'm sure it will continue to grow on me on future listens too. 4/5
Fast fun
Great stuff; always liked The Hives and this was brilliant
Album grows on you, some tracks sound like the Outcast in parts, I know a couple of the tracks already.
Solid high energy punky rock ‘n roll. A bit one-note, but if you’re in the mood for what they do, they absolutely deliver. Very enjoyable.
it's surprising to me that I like this as much as I do. On it's face it sounds similar to other music I have rated much lower. I think it's going to take a few more listens to figure out why. It's rowdy but keeps me interested. Usually the more of this type of rowdy music is just discordant and simple/boring to me.
Never heard of this before! Good bashy fun. My ex would hate it.
a bit presumptuous title for an album, especially something that is not particularly mindblowing, even at the time. that being said, it is a fun enough album and, although a bit samey throughout, doesn't ever get boring. if you like that brand of early 00s garage rock revival, you'll probably have a decent enough time.
I don’t know if they were my “New Favorite Band”, but I did enjoy this album. If the Kinks would have been a Millennial band, they would be the Hives. I appreciated the rawness of their sound that emotionally led you somewhere between a strong head bop and the urge to throw your coworkers into a mosh pit in a staff meeting. Key songs for me were Outsmarted and I really liked the break on Madman, though the most popular song on this Here We Go Again can’t be discounted. If there was a fault it’s that the album is so short. I can and will be listening to this again!
This was pretty good!
нормалек, первую песню знал, нравится.
I can’t believe this album is already 24 years old—I loved it growing up! The Hives always bring the punk energy, and Your New Favourite Band delivers 30 minutes of pure punk gold. That said, I’m not sure a greatest hits album really belongs on the list! Favourite song: You can’t beat the opening two tracks, Hate to Say I Told You So and Main Offender—they’re signature Hives hits. Least favourite: The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime didn’t really add much to the album. Album artwork: Cool cover—brings back great memories of having this on CD and vinyl.
It's basically an early greatest hits aimed at riding the early 00s garage rock revival wave all the way to the top of the charts. Would love to hate it, but I just have a great time listening to this stupid, predictable, high-energy collection of songs.
Short, to the point, in your face, and stupid rock’n’roll. I hate to admit it, but the Swedes know how to have some fun.
All the bangers.
Konstigt med en samling som inte har med det bästa. Konstigt att välja denna och inte t ex Tyrranosaurus Hives. Men det är ju the Hives! Fyra plus! Nästan fem.
This is fine. It’s short, well produced, and stylistically coherent. Not gonna revisit this, but it’s good for what it’s trying to be.
As expected, this album starts at an 8 and doesn’t look back. Ahem, on a scale of 10 in rockness. I don’t take anything special from it. I did when they broke out on the scene in my highly influential years. This is the perfect soundtrack for a high octane event you are participating in. It could also been a Jackass soundtrack. Get what I’m saying about it? Huh? Do ya? Punk?
Et voilà les autres branleurs. A la longue ça devient compliqué de différencier leurs titres, ça sonne toujours un peu de la même façon mais ça reste du bon rock'n'roll nerveux et euphorisant. “Hate to say I told you so”, “Main offender”, “AKA IDIOT”, ça reste des classiques.
wow, I like the album a lot. But I have to admit, I couldn't listen to this punk or whatever all the time. Hey, I didn't know that the "Hives" were from Sweden. So no wonder, full Swedish power. 3 to 3.5 stars for the Hives, at least half a star for Sweden. That makes 4 stars in my opinion
It's a great little album isnt it? Funky punky fun and exciting.
Ridiculously catchy even if every song sounds the same.
Really fun album, and a brilliant live band too. Will ignore the fact that it's pretty much a compiliation album this one time...
This album is objectively not a 4, but it was pivotal in my upbringing.
I forgot how rad these guys are and how much that garage rock revival of the early 2000s was such a great time.
Pretty good, I enjoyed it.
Brilliant, loud and exciting
Let's go sk8
4.5*
Really enjoyed this album. I always like the Hives' singles, but have never listened to a full album before. Lots of great songs.
Good ol punk rock
The angry teenager in me wants to give it 5 stars and listen to it on full volume to piss off my parents. The adult is a bit more critical and thinks it's okay, but nothing to listen all the time. Also, not that sophisticated with chord progression and a best of album... So we compromise on 4 stars.
Pretty good overall
I knew the first song here, it's pretty good. But overly dissapointed by the second song as it sounded almost exactly the same. Fortunately, the album became more and more punk as it went and I found myself enjoying it once again by the end. My favorite was Mad Men.
good stuff, but greatest hits. I changed and listened to Veni Vidi Vicious (one of the albums the songs here were taken from)
From song quality alone, this album deserves a fine. But since it’s a compilation, with the strongest tracks from 2 albums and an ep, I’ll round down to 4. Not many better garage punk bands around as The Hives in their heyday!
Solid record Straight to the point Needs to slow down
Compilation album! Cool rock sound on the front 1-2, Hate To Say I Told You So and Main Offender. Supply And Demand keeps the aggression up. Man this album is all fast, aggressive tunes.
The Hives are not my new favorite band but this is still an amazing record. Straight to the point garage rock with no bullshit. Less than half an hour and they make their point very clear.
A solid effort. The first track is fantastic, but the rest, while good, can feel a bit too noisy at times.
