they say that art disturbs the comfortable and comforts the disturbed. an album that would make zappa proud, no doubt. dissonant, alien, surreal, anxious... a majority of the songs seem less like songs and more like cries for help. a few decent tracks like the one i've picked make you feel like you're in a demented moshpit, but a giant majority are just... weird.

music for the oldest of oldheads, full of soul, melody and wit. leave it to ray charles to make a hefty collection full of mostly lovely tunes for swinging or cuddling. oh yeah, and my favorite track broke me. it's the track that plays in the ending scene of tezuka's metropolis (fantastic movie, perhaps someday soon it deserves to be streamed). and holy damn i didn't expect it. not only did i think of that but of course i thought about myself and my own relationship... it's. it's a lot. i wailed like a fucking baby.

probably one of the more obscure albums on this collection. this album doesn't even have a wikipedia article about it. i've never heard a sound quite like this before. mind-bending and cosmic, this album evenly blends pop, electronic, new wave rock, and something else entirely. if you enjoy the likes of beck and gorillaz, you'll initially be put off by its slightly strange sound, but you'll end up loving it so much by the second or third track. this album was made for me. even if you don't end up liking it, at least i do! it's groovy.

when it comes to british rock, i feel like these guys are just as historically notable as the beatles. very creative and catchy songs, especially in a time where many bands were kinda... stinkers. a true psychedelic inspired album that's simply wild and unafraid and not like... echoey warbly yodeling, lewis caroll-esque absurdism, backwards guitars and sitars. finally a real example of how psy-rock should be composed!! i've been looking forward to this day for a long time. some people may think this genre is an acquired taste but i think a lot of people will enjoy this one.

quite the interesting listen today, it's definitely a rock pop album but it doesn't sound like any other i've listened to, especially from this time period. barrett's voice is tired and almost delightfully deadpan as he sings, invoking a certain emotion that he most certainly felt after leaving pink floyd. it's simple and doesn't have too much going on in terms of instrumentation and production. you can feel exactly how exhausted he felt, being a musician and all. i fuck with it. imagine making a typical "perky" rock album when you're tired of making music in the first place.
