Album Summary

A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector is an album of Christmas songs, produced by Phil Spector, and originally released in 1963. Spector treated a series of mostly secular Christmas standards to his "Wall of Sound" treatment, and the selections feature the vocal performances of Spector's regular artists during this period. The album peaked at No. 13 on Billboard magazine's special, year-end, weekly Christmas Albums sales chart in December 1963. In 2003, the album was voted No. 142 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, maintaining the rating in a 2012 revised list. In 2017, it was ranked the 130th greatest album of the 1960s by Pitchfork. In 2019, it was ranked the greatest Christmas album of all time by Rolling Stone. Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys has cited this album as his favorite of all time. The album was included in Robert Dimery's 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Very festive. Also very sugary. Not really something I'd want as a whole album.

It is a christmas album...

When Phil Spector introduces himself in the last song there should be gunshot sound effects like on an NWA record.

I generally detest Christmas music, but this was above average.

Not really my vibe

I have heard most of these before, and they are good, buuuuut the "classic" sound doesn't really make it the type of Christmas music that I listen to year round, and I DO listen to Christmas music year round.

It’s a Christmas album

FUCK Phil Spector and his genius producing.

I really tried to listen to the album .. But i'd rather get into a fist fight with an Elve on Christmas Eve ..

Довольно стандартный на современное ухо альбом рождественских песен. Вполне себе создает новогоднее настроение, а что еще от него надо?

I actually prefer A Very Special Christmas from the late 80s as a rock and roll Christmas album while realizing that one stands on the shoulders of this one.

Every old Christmas song I've heard every year the whole of my life. It was like torture to hear them all at once. But I did try and listen with a fresh approach and not just as background music wherever you go from December onwards. Overplayed and not really anything more than a bunch of gimmicky songs. Production not for me, very indistinct instruments, apart from the sleigh bell sounds and brass. Silent night is truly awful, can do without the message thanks.

En av de beste juleplatene. Eneste som trekker ned er litt slitsom produksjon og den merkelige outroen til Phil Spector.

First time hearing this! Great production.

Not too big on Christmas music, but these are classics

I’ll admit this one is hard to rate. Part of the appeal of a Christmas album is to enjoy them during the season, not to mention I grew up celebrating Christmas with Los Hermanos Flores instead of carols. However, the album’s relevancy even 60 years later is not lost on me. I have heard several of these renditions individually but never knew they all came from the same album. Songs like Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) and Sleigh Ride have had continued popularity on social media. The standout for me is Darlene Love. Her vocals were powerful and the most memorable. The vocals and production are a time capsule and enjoyed better on a speaker/cd player instead of headphones. Listen again?: Yes, in December

Very appropriate for a mid-February afternoon listening session! Joking aside, it's no Nat King Cole

9/10 Perfect Christmas album Definitely life changing, I will be puting this album from now on every Christmas

It’s sodding January.

That albums made me wanna celebrate Christmas HM: I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus Rudolph the red nosed reindeer Top 4 White Christmas Sleigh ride Christmas ( baby please come home) Santa Claus is coming to Town

Some classic Christmas songs by 60s girl bands and Darlene Love produced with Phil Spector's wall of sound. The individual songs are fine but I can't listen to all of them at once.

Since I'm playing catch-up with my group, I listened to this in September... I've never really been a fan of Christmas music, even during the Christmas period, so this wasn't my favourite listen by any means. Obviously I've heard all of these songs thousands of times, so they're pretty well ingrained in my head, but I made a conscious effort here to listen out for Phil Spector's influence in the production. I have to say, for all the hype around his "wall of sound" I found most of this just sounded like a sludgy mess. Maybe that's the point, but it doesn't appeal to me in the slightest as a production style. Not only was Phil Spector a literal murderer, but he is also a heavy influence for Shoegaze and Dream Pop, which if I were a prosecutor, would be grounds to push for a second count of attempted murder (of music)... I don't think I'm a fan. The artists/musicians themselves deserve some recognition, because although I'm not a Christmas music fan, all of the performances here are solid.

Christmas music. Fantastic.

I like this album, perfect for christmas.

I don't like Christmas music and did not care for this album, but will acknowledge that it was well produced. That being said, this is an album I would want to OD on.

Typical traditional Christmas album. Some lovely voices. Phil Spector at the end is creepy. 3.5

A collection of Christmas songs, none of these are necessarily bad but I generally would never listen to Christmas music when its not being forced upon me in random retail stores during the holiday season. Personally don't think an album like this should even be on this list.

Compilation album full of old Christmas hits most of us have probably heard a thousand times. They're good, but I'm never really going crazy for Christmas music.

What a treat in July

I’m not really a Christmas music fan, and most of these aren’t the versions you typically hear, so it’s not something I’m really interested in to be honest.

Even in late January I enjoyed this and felt pretty Christmassy so that's testament to how good this is. I reckon I'll come back to this in December. That said, as an album so tied to one season, I don't think I can rate it too highly, hence the 3.

First time in years I enjoyed Christmas music after Christmas

The name feels hilariously ominous. I don't want any gifts from Phil Spector. Good songs though!

already know this one, great album

Terrible!

one of only a handful of christmas albums you really need

Wonderfly Christmasy

Some good ol' Christmas music, all in a single album!

Maybe would have liked this more if I listened to it at Christmas... also I don't want any gifts from Phil thanks

5 stars. Not just the best Christmas album ever made, but a genuine great album. A fun, uplifting classic...

It's xmaaaaas!

Heck yeah, what a great Christmas album. One of the very few “essential” Christmas albums in my opinion.

Upbeat julestemning på boks. Produksjonen blir litt slitsom etter hvert. Høydepunkt: The Ronettes - Sleigh Ride

A few classic Christmas songs quite nostalgic HATEEEEEE SILENT NIGHTTT JUST NO

Not in the mood for Christmas music…

Xmas music that's not infuriating. If I have to hear festive music every year, then this will do fine.

Could not find this exact album. Listened to a 2002 album: A Christmas Gift For You - A Tribute to Phil Spector. A nice old timey holiday option.

Perfection. Aside from the creepy message from Phil at the end.

ai, então é Natal...

I wish I hadn't missed this, phenomenal album of traditional arrangements

I didn’t like when he started talking

Brilliant. Every one of these tracks should be played on the radio during the Season. All these artists and the producer (big separate the art from the artist energy needed on this one. Skip the final track I say) working at their peak.

I know a lot of other reviewers are focusing on Phil Spector being a murderer, but let's not forget that this is a white man who is presenting a complication of works by black artists. Now I don't know anything about the murder, and maybe Phil gave these artists a fair cut of the profits from this album, but if I had to guess, I'd say that he didn't. This is a pretty solid compilation of Christmas songs, only flawed by inclusion of several speaking parts. I really don't like speaking or recitations in music.

I didn’t realize all my favorite Christmas songs were on one record, this is a delight!

8/10 Defined a whole genre of Christmas

Álbum aconchegante e com espírito natalino. “Santa Claus is coming for town” é minha favorita da obra.

i'm not listening to this

It's a christmas album

Wall of sound, angelic harmonies - this is exactly what I expected from a Phil Spector album. I’ll be adding it to my holiday rotation.

Festive mix of classic Xmas songs

Rating this low only because Christmas albums are always a cash in. There's a reason why thrift stores everywhere are always filled with christmas album vinyl. Even the people creating it know it's a paycheck. This has that Phil Spector sound you can hear that inspired Brian Wilson. I guess that is something to say about it.

I'm not really into Christmas music

Ronettes goated

not christmas anymore, quite a seasonal dependant album

full of bangers

The perfect concept album.

A go-to christmas album for sure. Don’t know that I’ve ever sat through a whole christmas song intentionally before, but it was kinda fun. Fave songs: White Christmas.

DELIGHTFUL. And he's dead. So it's fine. Good choice for vinyl.

Got it after Christmas, tough beat

Yep thats Christmas music alright

Interesting… * White Christmas - good start. Not sure about the spoken poem * Frosty - nice classic rendition * Bells - not the greatest of Xmas songs * Santa coming to town - great * Sleigh ride - quintessential version * Marshmallow??? * Kissing Santa - good version * Rudolph - good * Walking - quintessential * Wooden soldiers - good but unfamiliar * Please come home - quintessential * Here comes - good * Silent night - could have done without the soliloquy… Well, that was great. Was not really aware of this album. I would grab this on vinyl for a good price. Will have to keep an eye out.

A pleasant Christmas album that brings you back to an older time.

25/12/2025 (merry christmas!) *1. white christmas - darlene love!!!! love the wall of sound <3 the spoken section is so nice..... this is my favourite version of this song.... beautiful 2. frosty the snowman - the ronettes!!!!! phil spector may be in the deepest recesses of hell, but he could make a great pop song. *3. the bells of st mary - the bells! omg i love this one. the backing vocals add so much..... his voice is soo nice. really sweet song. *4. santa claus is coming to town - the crystals!!!!! i love all of the new york accents.... i love when it gets all loud. the drums! saxaphone! aaahhh!!!! the bells........ the vocals...... iconic....... 5. sleigh ride - i love how much this is.... why is there a horse neighing...... *6. a marshmallow world - never heard any versions of this song before. saxaphone!!! her vocals are soooooo gooooood...... losing my mind. wish i had listened to this album earlier in the day, very much in the christmas spirit not even an hour before it's over lol. 7. i saw mommy kissing santa claus - on the christmas cd i had as a kid, i couldn't stand this song and have refused to listen to any version of it. but the ronettes might redeem it for me. liking the violins. immediately redeemed!!!! all of the instruments together are heavenly..... ronnie spector you will live forever....... gorgeous!!!! bring back pop music that sounds like this!!! 8. rudolph the red-nosed reindeer - i love this album so much..... so warm..... it's cheesy without feeling overbearingly cheesy, great :) 9. winter wonderland - somehow you can hear the bass more in this album than in the metal album i listened to a few days ago. in the christmas spirit right now!!!!!! these versions of the songs are now my favourites of all time! the instrumental bits are so nice......... *10. parade of the wooden soldiers - trumpets??? the vocals started i'm going to die...... incredible... *11. christmas (baby please come home) - the build up to the vocals..... love how dramatic this is....... oh my god the ending is sosooso gooooood. 12. here comes santa claus - wish it was acceptable to listen to christmas songs year-round because this album would be on constant rotation 13. silent night - oh my god why is phil spector speaking. not aged well. at all..... reallly nice after he shuts up though. some of these are classics that everyone knows, but even the lesser-played ones were really great :) will be playing this constantly next christmas <3

Very on theme for today. A load of absolute classics. Fav song is ‘Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)’.

Favorite Song: Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) Least Favorite Song: Parade Of The Wooden Soldiers I don’t celebrate Christmas whatsoever, but there are so many classics on here that I can’t give this any lower than a 3.

I just dont like christmas

Great Christmas album🎄

I love Christmas music, and this is a great collection of. music. I was thinking it might be a 4 star, but in reality it's so good I think it deserves 5 stars for the talent and vibes.

Christmas standards with the "Wall of Sound" treatment; doesn't fail to make you smile

So first of all, fuck Phil Spector, he's dead anyways, but still, I hope he's having a real hot time right now. That out of the way, I don't have that nostalgia or strong feelings towards these songs, since I'm not American or British or anything anywhere near the English-speaking folks. I know the songs from American media, but that's about it. I've never listened to them to feel the Christmas spirit. I just get the 90's American TV Christmas spirit. It makes me feel like I'm in one of those movies. That's why I feel I can give a more unbiased opinion. It's not a perfect album, but it's really fun, actually deserving of being on this list. It's incredibly influential, it makes a whole holiday (alongside newer songs, but that's besides the point). It's really good, but I still wanna keep my rating system. Would I actively listen to these songs? Not really. Not even on Christmas. Are they bangers? Absolutely! MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!! And Phil, once again, rot in whatever hell you believed in, in all of them actually, since I don't believe in any.

Not sure if it was a coincidence or on purpose but nice little Christmas album with some classics from the Ronettes.

Its dated badly, but court records suggest Phil was pretty bad at dating too. It is however a Christmas album at Christmas time = you've got a piece of coal for a heart to rate any lower than 3 stars

Santay as hell. Happy to get this one on Christmas day. It's easily a contender for best Christmas album of all time. Phil Spector shines through on these classics, and forces the question, were they even classics before this? Who cares, just enjoy the egg nog, put another log on the fire and kick back.

The most iconic christmas album. all the original classics! Only rating it 3 because it’s christmas songs.

Álbum con clásicos navideños pero de calidad jaja

Well produced Christmas songs.

Oh how I hate Christmas music. Hate might be too strong, but I tire easily of constant Christmas songs. (I say just drop Christmas music every 3rd or 5th song on your regular playlist. Binging on nothing but carols is pure torture. Just no!) Okay, Christmas hate rant over. This album is brilliant. The arrangements, the vocalists (I'm partial to Darlene Love), THE WRECKING CREW! Everything about this disc is great. I would definitely drop any one of these tracks into my playlist. No earlier than December 15th.

It's a classic album but Darlene Love and The Ronettes seem to be more heavy lifting than Phil Spector. Also, less murdering?

This made me like Christmas music then I realised it’s produced by a murderer. Merry Christmas?
