First time listening to Missy - style not my bag, so better than I expected. Give it a listen, you non Hips Hopsters! 994 - - almost done!

I could go months without hearing Timbaland's "Uh huh, uh huh!" at the end of what seems like every one of Missy's bars. It's pretty good.

эм это я мог где угодно услышать, типичный женский хипхоп того времени 2

This was a good 4 until it fell off over the last 5 or 6 tracks to a 3

Sorta supa dupa fly.

Aquí destaca Sock it to me, Beep me 911, Don't Be Comin' (In My Face) otra que suena a Hill, Pass the blunt (prefiero Pass the dutchie de Mighty Diamonds o Musical Youth), la saltarina Izzy Izzy Ahh y sobre todo They don´t wanna fuck with me. Un disco muy influyente y muy bien hecho. Lo superaría aún en Under Construction . The rain nunca me ha gustado,

Enjoyable

Not a fan of this music in general but found this really boring

90s hip hop / R&B. She has a great voice and I enjoyed the singing a lot more than the rapping. There was a mix of slow R&B tracks and slightly more upbeat hip hop, but all of the beats/backing tracks had simple, repetitive artificial sounding drum samples that I'm not a big fan of. There's also way too many self-congratulatory songs and spoken word tracks for my liking.

I like Missy alright, but this record isn’t really her best. Parts of it are fine, but there’s a ton and a half of filler. 6.5/10

Mid to late and early 2000s rap can really be hit or miss. Now Missy Elliott is a well established and successful artist so I expected this to be pretty good, and it is. However, I would say this is one of those albums that is longer than it needs to be. There’s something about this era of hip-hop where the albums were really long and contained a lot of filler in a lot of cases. So I honestly think if this album would have been 25% shorter I would’ve rated it higher than I’m going to. The first part of the album and especially the first couple songs are fire, but it does start to trail off towards the end. That’s not to say it isn’t good. It’s just not great. But I really do think this is a good debut and an overall really good hip-hop album for the time. It’s what you would expect, but it’s also very foreshadowing of things that she would do later.

Early 90s hip hop. It could’ve been replaced with something better from the same era.

High 3 - snuck up on me a bit as I found my head bopping along whilst I worked.

Missy showing lyrical content and brilliant style over proper backing from Timbaland

So much better than Under Construction. Superb production. High 3.

Missy Elliott is a great rapper and fantastic singer with strong pop sensibilities. It’s a long album but stuffed with enough melodic intrigue that it never feels like a drag. Timberland’s smart and sophisticated production is perfectly smooth, which when Missy Elliott is singing emphasises the beauty of her voice and when she’s rapping gives her something to push against.

Missy gets a high 3 on this one, some great beats and good rapping, good features and production but a little long and doesn't all land for me

Double albums are always a tough thing to overcome.... But this was pretty good besides the being a little too long part. Timbaland really is a GOAT

Suuresti tuotettu. Paljon vierailijoita.

Decent album. Too long in my opinion

I love the couple of songs but the rest is just okay to me.

Not quite to my taste, but not unpleasant either. Two stars…

This album has a true R&B vibe with some of the realest sounding grooves of its time. It feels clubby in the best way and still sounds fresh. The collaborations are stacked and almost every guest appearance actually adds something instead of just filling space. Missy sounds completely at home here. Her delivery is playful, sharp and full of personality, while Timbaland’s production gives the whole record its elastic, off-kilter bounce. The beats are strange and funky at the same time, and they leave plenty of room for the vocals to ride. Nothing feels stiff or overly polished. The sound is clean but still has weight. The low end hits, the percussion stays interesting, and the whole album moves with a confident, late-night club energy. It never really loses momentum. Supa Dupa Fly remains a strong and distinctive debut. Groovy, well made and full of character.

classic missy, so good to hear Aaliyah too

Fine beats, fine flows, fine R&B singing sections... but an hour of just fine material can be a bit dragging and hard to get through. Before I say anything more I just want to clarify that I do understand the impact of this album and how important it was for women in rap, and I do appreciate what she did. Nevertheless, it does not really make this more enjoyable, which still is to some degree. As said, I think she has a nice flow, specially where she has more attitude like in the first handful of songs and "Izzy Izzy Ahh" to mention another example. But I don't find it to be super appealing. It feels nice to hear, but she is not doing anything that I find intriguing nor emotional. I also find funny how sometimes she hypes her own rap abilities and the beats, when I just think they are decent to good at best. I get the confidence boost is important considering its context, but I also fink kind of cheesy. Some examples are the following lines from "Izzy Izzy Ahh": "You never heard beats like this before (Uh, uh) When me and Timbaland walk through the door (Uh, uh) Our style be tighter than before (Uh, uh)" and these ones from "I'm Talking": "My style of rappin (My style) I'm su-su-such a good rapper (I'm su-su-such a good rapper)". In conclusion, I think it is alright. Maybe nothing does impact me, but at least everything from the raps, the features, the R&B sections to the beats are decent enough to make the album not a bad experience.

Please no more bad rap albums.

What to say - lates 1990s hip-hop. Assortment of guest vocalists. Production is sparse, bass-heavy, not seemingly based on existing soul or funk samples. This electro hip-hop feel. Bit trip-hoppy I guess? It's really nothing special to me. Wow, lyrics: 'i'm such a good rapper'... even if it's tongue in cheek it's crap Best track - The Rain, Izzy Izzy Ahh 3 stars - but a low 3

Not my favourite flavour of hip hop, but I think if I gave this album more time I would like it. Great cover art.

MISSY AND TIMMY What a wonderful combo, genuinely. Long before Timbaland became a shill for robots and way back when Missy was consistently making music. Seems like so long ago i would see The Rain video on MTV. This was soooo good but there’s still a little room for some growth here.

Noe bra, noe unødvendig. Lener seg voldsomt på gjesteartister, men liker de som er innom.

Sorry Missy, this doesn't hit like Under Construction.

Missy Elliott’s *Supa Dupa Fly* is widely regarded as a landmark debut that reshaped the sonic and visual possibilities of hip-hop and R&B. Released in 1997, it arrived at a pivotal moment following the deaths of Tupac and Biggie, offering a future-facing alternative to the era’s grim realities . ### 🎤 Lyrics and Themes: Radical Self-Expression Missy Elliott’s pen game on *Supa Dupa Fly* is less about traditional lyrical dexterity and more about **radical, surreal self-expression**. Her style avoids the conventional “tough” posturing of the time, instead delivering a stream of offbeat free associations and playful onomatopoeia delivered in a distinctive, slow-burning purr . Thematically, the album is a declaration of **“the Black girl who wins”** . It blends humor, sexuality, and vulnerability without apology. Tracks like **“The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)”** use the metaphor of bad weather to describe escaping a doomed relationship (“I break up with him before he dump me / To have me, yes you lucky”) . The album also champions female solidarity, featuring collaborations with Aaliyah, Lil’ Kim, and Da Brat, demonstrating that there was room for multiple women to succeed in the genre . ### 🎹 Music and Production: The Timbaland Revolution The album’s sound is entirely the work of **Timbaland**, who produced every track and co-wrote the material . Their chemistry resulted in a sonic blueprint that felt like it was beamed in from the future . Timbaland’s production was **revolutionary for its use of space and rhythm**. Instead of relying on obvious loops, he constructed **“lean, digital grooves packed with unpredictable arrangements and stuttering rhythms”** that often resembled slowed-down drum’n’bass . The beats were full of sonic quirks—chirping birds, giggles, and coughs—that created a **“malfunctioning robot factory”** aesthetic . This experimental approach made the album a boundary-shattering, postmodern masterpiece that influenced not just hip-hop and R&B, but also electronic music . ### 🌍 Influence: A New Blueprint The influence of *Supa Dupa Fly* is immense. It is frequently cited as **arguably the most influential album ever released by a female hip-hop artist** . It helped shift the sound of urban radio at the close of the millennium and established Timbaland as a visionary producer . Missy’s visual identity, particularly the **iconic inflatable trash bag suit** in the Hype Williams-directed video for “The Rain,” became a defining moment in hip-hop imagery, proving that eccentricity and art could be mainstream . The album’s impact echoes through modern music; for instance, Drake’s breakout mixtape *So Far Gone* liberally sampled the album’s ballad **“Friendly Skies”** . ### ⚖️ Pros and Cons **Pros:** - **Cohesive Sonic Identity:** Having Timbaland produce every track gives the album a focused, futuristic sound that was unlike anything else at the time . - **Groundbreaking Production:** The stuttering rhythms and unconventional arrangements were revolutionary and remain highly influential decades later . - **Strong Singles:** Tracks like **“The Rain,” “Sock It 2 Me,” and “Beep Me 911”** are enduring classics that perfectly balance experimental production with catchy songwriting . - **Visual and Cultural Impact:** The album and its videos introduced a unique, eccentric aesthetic that expanded the possibilities for hip-hop artists . **Cons:** - **Inconsistent Second Half:** Some critics and listeners feel the album’s quality dips in its back half, with certain deep cuts failing to match the brilliance of the singles . - **Vocal Delivery Can Be Polarizing:** Missy’s distinctive, laid-back flow is a strength to many, but others find it occasionally **“monotone”** or **“lethargic”** in comparison to more technical rappers . - **Guest Features Can Be Hit or Miss:** While the guest list is impressive, some listeners feel that certain features don’t always elevate the tracks they appear on . *Supa Dupa Fly* is a **boundary-shattering debut** that introduced a singular new voice and a revolutionary production style. While it has minor pacing flaws, its influence on music, visuals, and the role of women in hip-hop is undeniable.

This album is always in rotation in my collection. Missy‘s first album was definitely a banger. It showed that she could wrap and sing and it’s so funny that a lot of GenZ didn’t even know that Missy could sing because I played this album in front of them. Her breakout album just showed the beginning of Timberland and his producing skills also.

An hour straight of this is a lot, but Missy Elliott is a singles star and each single is a blast

Funky, other-worldly and all blunted out. Missy’s mix of hip-hop and R&B leans heavily on the latter, and I can’t help but compare her to Lauryn Hill for the same reason — which isn’t really a fair fight, and that’s OK. You can hear how hip hop was changing, moving away from rich and layered sampling toward something a little more spare, with top-notch production and breakbeats from Timbaland. When it all lines up, as on the slow-burning “Friendly Skies,” it’s sublime. These days I'm mostly into edibles, but this makes me wanna fire up a spliff and let the smoke linger.

"The Rain" is a great single, but the rest of it seemed pretty standard 90s rap to me.

Great and classic tracks here. I knew quite a few songs, but had never heard the whole album. Its fantastic just about all the way through, maybe room to skim a couple of tracks. Probably 4.5 for me but bumping as this is top tier and was heavily influential.

1997 me would probably have dismissed this, but I like it. I’ve been getting heavily into underground hip hop over the past year, and this fits right in there, with the inventive samples and futuristic sounds.

No, thank you.

I enjoyed that mostly. The Rain is a banger. I can see why it was the single.

Not styles I like, mostly. Some of it was all right; I liked The Rain. Busta's Outro tipped the balance from 3 to 2.

3/5 - I like "Hit Em wit da Hee" and "The Rain". I wouldn't have paid this any mind in the late 90s, but glad to give this a chance now.

Old school Missy Elliott

The Good: Fucking Supa Fly is back! The Bad: Turns out it ain't our beloved cartoon... The Ugly: Finding out that my lawsuit about false advertising was thrown out and I had to encure the cost... I hate rap, that we know... What I hate even more is having to listen to an album in which the fucking producers name is mentioned almost every tune... can you imagine Elvis Presley doing the same thing and heralding Sam Philips constantly? Talk about a fucking ego... And that, boys and girls, is what's wrong with Rap... the ego... well, that, and it sucks. 1*

Really like the beats on this. Quite odd in places but in a good way. Great sound.

3.5 rounded up because Missy is awesome

Sock It to Me er låt. Noen alright låter innimellom, men sånn overall en utrolig lang & kjedelig time.

Too much R&B and smoothed out vocals here for my liking. What I really do like is Timbaland's beats and production quality. And I do like some of Missy's raps, but the real winner here for me is the sonic quality of the whole thing. The Rain is awesome. Great sample, great beat, her raps, the personality...all perfect. Probably wouldn't come back to this on my own. It's also too damn long.

A lot slower than I thought it would be. More easy listening than anything else.

Found this interesting, not because it was good, but because you could hear the groundwork for later, fun Missy Elliott stuff. Flipmode Squad!

She’s so fly

This is well done but I don’t like 90s R&B so it isn’t really my thing? Also I fucking hate Timbaland so I don’t like hearing his name every two minutes. Fuck Timbaland.

Good samples, good features. Missy Elliott is cool! Probably a 3.5 for me - fun tracks but maybe lacked a lil depth.

very 90s sounding but pretty good

Noe kult, en del middels.

Timbaland på jobb! Fenget likevel ikke helt

#475/1001. After the first few songs I was reminded again how hip-hop was the greatest musical invention after Kraftwerk brought in electronic beats and synthetic sounds to popular music. Then at some point the album started to sound like boring rnb, perhaps due to the feats. Nevertheless this album wipes the table out of so many gangsta machos that I can't even verbalise it, nor rhime about it, whine all you can.

Growing less and less patient with these long ass hip hop albums. I don’t doubt that Missy is great, I just found this to be a slog. 2/5 ⭐️ 256/1081

Nein, Rap geht immer noch nicht Gar nicht!

Good... not great... but good.

I liked it, very 90s New York vibes.

'97, past the cutoff apparently

buen disco, se disfruto

Ne možeš mi praviti ovako pozadinsku poprilično dosadnu muziku i onda pred kraj albuma pjesmu u kojoj kažeš da si 'such a good rapper'. Mislim da je izgubila sav potencijal za bolju ocjenu kad je to rekla.

Every time a Missy album comes up, I'm like..."Really?". After I listen to it, I'm all..."Hell yeah!". She's really f*ckin great at her flows. And this is just as much a Timbaland album as a Missy album. (And I'll add that Hype Williams visual interpretation of her songs completes this Holy Trinity). Lots of great guests on a lot of the tracks. This was a great introduction to a great artist who's fallen off the map a little bit.

its also going to have to be a 1. Nothing really engaging on here

Downbeats and understated r&b singing.

A decent debut album that probably came at the right time for a genre not renowned for its progessiveness. There’s a more well rounded, less rough sound to this album than standard 90s hip hop. Sure; it’s got all the usual questionable stuff you’d expect but it’s softened and more interesting with Missy. A worthwhile listen for someone who’s only ever heard the confected mainstream music of hers from the 2000s (not that I totally hated it). For the most part the features didn’t really add anything and the Busta Rhymes intro outtro you have to wonder why it was on there.

While the album boasts a wide selection of interesting and talented guest artists, the music ultimately suffers from the typical R&B plod. There is clear vocal artistry on display throughout the tracklist, but the electronic backing and the limitations of the genre itself sadly leave me wanting something that doesn't exist here for my personal taste.

I was expecting this album to sit firmly in the type of Hip-hop that I don't like but actually I sort of enjoyed it. It suffers from all the usual hip-hop tropes but Missy brings something different and fresh and some much needed feminine energy to the late nineties hip-hop scene. The blend of rapping and singing works quite well. Sort of like a early Justin Timberlake vibe with added authenticity. Busta Rhymes' additions were complete dross and he shouldn't have been allowed to bookend the album.

Disappointing after Under Construction. Less distinctive, too long, not enough rapping (she's much better when rapping, and some of the tracks here feel like they could have been done by anyone). Then, maybe just because I love the original song, that Ann Peebles sample feels egregious. Included because it's her debut, I guess? A low three stars, very nearly two.

good to hear some early ME. you can hear her honing in on what would be her eventual style

Indeed quite fly

I get the appeal, but I couldn’t get behind this one. Just felt like a chore to listen to.

Timbaland's beats do the heavy lifting here, but they can only do so much. Favorite track: Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)

This is fun and poppy and has some of the best rapping out there

“I’m full blown, just like my titties.” Nothing says quality and class quite like boastful vulgarities.

Album : 10/1089 Songs known going in : 0/17 Favourite song : Beep me 911 Cover art : like the close up shoe bottom nothing crazy though rating : 2/5 notes : really like the spoken intro outro, I think it's cool Some songs feel a little generic but that might be because of the age im listening to it. It's nearly 30 years after the fact and a lot of people have used this as inspiration. I really like her voice in the r&b sounding context such as beep me 911. Missy and timerland are a killer combo so sound. It all sounds really nice and solid my issue is just the generic feeling. The flow on they dont wanna fuck wit me is really nice. I struggled a bit with why you hurt me. It's not my kinda track personally. Im starting to do rating based on maths now I know crazy. percentage like songs with a slight plus negative on feel of album

This album I wasn't too keen on to start with. Because I find a lot of hip-hop albums tend to be quite bloated. I suppose this one was a bit of that, but I found the songs near the end started to get real good, where with most other hip hop albums it tends to be the other way. The album was mostly hip-hop with R&B moments. Some of the hooks were pretty good, one that's stuck in my head is in "I'm Talking" where it goes "I'm such a good rapper" I love how lazily and unhurried it sounds to the point where it's infectious. Possibly might return to this one, not entirely sure right now. I believe though it has a place on a must-hear album (definitely earned a place on a must-hear hip hop album list.) Highlight Song/s: "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)", "Why You Hurt Me" and "I'm Talking"

The production and backing music is pretty solid and carries a decent variety of styles from R&B, to hip hop and over to electronic robotics and light reggae. I'm learning that her releasing an album as a rapper is important context for the overall tone but not a lot of the vocals grabbed me in a big way. I would listen to a lot of the music again without complaint but not likely to be searching it up myself on the regular. Music videos for the songs are so weird though and that was worth the time to relisten for sure.

More less.

Not really for me… I like some special Rap … Kind Eminem… … 1.75 *

Favourite songs: - sock it 2 me - best friends - Izzy Izzy ahh

3.5 rounded down

I think I mostly like this because of Timbaland’s production, even though I like Dre and Jam/Lewis productions better. A solid 3.

Good! Not as great as the heights she’d hit later, but really fun

While the first Missy Elliott album I came across on the list, Under Construction, was at least passable, at most decent, I barely made it to the end of her debut. There are several reasons for this. First, the album is very slow and monotonous, all the songs are mid-tempo. Timbaland, Missy's traditional sidekick, is just getting his groove on here, and despite the sound still being spacious and pulsating, the record feels like reggae wrapped in some kind of rubbery shell. Second, the vocals are so buried in the mix that for half the album you can't even hear what they're saying, and for the other half, you can't understand them, so you're mostly stuck listening to the beats. Third, you have to listen to them for an hour! I almost fell asleep. The intro and outro by Busta Rhymes are also somewhat unintelligible. In general, it’s a strange way for the authors of the list to close the topic of Missy Elliott, considering that they did not add her third album with the main hit to the list.

Always been a fan. This record leans more R&B and is very good

Not my favourite missy album but still great with Supa Dupa Fly

Alright in places but just felt very repetitive by the end.

Supa Dupa Poopa Scoopa! Very possibly the worst album on the list, so annoying.

Hit and Missy, I like that one. The 90s can sound oversized and cartoonish. Missy can rhyme, clearly one of the great MCs. But the garishness of pushing her tongue too far into her cheek, offsets the whole thing and makes it just OK .
