The first two songs were great - the rest of it was kind of forgettable
Enjoyable! Hated the sex intermission but the rapping was pretty good
LOVE S&G together, solo album just doesn't do it for me sadly
In the words of Jay-Z, "Grand opening, grand closing.... forgettable middle"
Enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would! Love the blues here.
Thought the 18 min track would save it, did the opposite. Not a huge fan of LSD rock it appears
Fine! Just fine. Won't listen again
So long. Not terrible though, nice to recognize some stuff, liked it more than I thought I would
I love the guitar and the vibes but dislike the whole braggadocios nature of the band, feels like the same song 9 times
I was always a self-titled truther for a long time & hadn't listened to this album in a bit. Rolling it on its' 38th anniversary feels like fate and I finally understand. Listened multiple times yesterday, highly enjoyable. May be music for sad people but dammit if between the bars isn't one of the best songs ever written
Sounded pretty dated unfortunately. Not a huge fan
The first half was great. I've never taken psychadelics, but if I did I think the world would sound like the narrator on the second half of the album. Very interesting.
Long but enjoyable, recognized a couple of hits from here
Enjoyable but not particularly memorable
Most enjoyable acid rock I've heard so far easily
Unmemorable but unoffensive pop, I'm fine with it
Can't recall a single song, especially compared to let it bleed
Quite enjoyed this! Love some politically charged folk music
I have tried this album a lot in my life, because I feel like it's an album I SHOULD love. Each time I like it a little more, but not enough to give it more than 3 stars. Just feels kinda dated to me, I dunno
Was actually pleasantly surprised by this one. Recognized a couple tunes from soccer chants. Wouldn't listen again but I expected for it to be a lot less
I mean holy shit it's the monkey album
Not bad at all! Didn't realize I knew the first track until I got war flashbacks to every commercial I've ever heard
Actually incredible pick. Best new album I've heard so far. Love the songwriting, love the electric guitar.
Enjoyable, but forgettable
Never been a metal guy but I really enjoyed the guitar work on this album, will listen again
Really enjoyed this. Only ever listened to Rumours like most people my age, but there were some good poppy tracks combined with some great songwriting. Probably the best album that I've never heard so far.
Awful. Girls might be the worst song I've ever heard, laughably bad. Yeah, No Sleep Till Brooklyn and Fight for your Right are on here, but they're overplayed and I could not STAND them. Brass Monkey is super corny, too. Nothing else memorable. Glad to never have to listen to this album ever again.
Also not bad. Not great either, but unsure why U2 gets such a bad rap.
I didn't think I was a metal fan, now I KNOW I'm not a metal fan. Guitar is fine, but vocals are horrendous.
Yeah, just not the genre for me... oh well
Wow, really loved this even if I didn't understand a word. Great rhythm, great harmonies, very very groovy
Felt a little long at parts but otherwise pretty good!
This sounds like if you told someone to record a rock album at The Haunted Mansion
People say this album is super influential, and I don't doubt it - and maybe it's because I wasn't around when this came out - but it just doesn't hit too hard for me. I think Heroin is very cool, and I'm not too fond of the experimental bits, but I think it's supremely overrated if anything.
An album I've always wanted to listen to but never had the motivation. Met expectations, I'd say, really enjoyed the atmosphere
I didn't think I was a big Nick Cave fan, mainly because of the voice (reminds me of an older Johnny Cash), but I REALLY enjoyed the instrumentation, especially on the first album.
Not my favorite but I appreciate the increased instrumentation
Definitely inoffensive melodramatic pop!
Like you recorded a rock album at the Haunted Mansion, but this time it was actually good
Nice r&b, however largely repetitive. Think his other albums are better
I enjoyed this but it gets knocked a star for the homophobia. Guess that’s just the 90s
Surprised by this one! Loved the variety and heard inspiration for so many bands.
Heck yeah. I haven't ever given Zeppelin a chance outside of the classics (IV mainly), but man I LOVED this. Bumping it down a star because the end felt a little underwhelming, but this is getting me excited for the rest of the Zeppelin on this list.
As I got further into this album the rating dropped lower and lower. Not because the music is bad - I think it's perfectly tolerable as background music in, say, 1985 - this album just feels like it goes on FOREVER with nothing redeemable. I'm sure you could play me this album again in a year and I wouldn't remember a single thing.
It's just well-produced, risk-averse, bland late 70s jazz. Certainly not something I MUST listen to before I die, taking the title of this website literally.
Quite long, but still enjoyable. Classic CSN harmonies, love the instrumentation, but getting knocked for length, rounded down even.
Gifted with one of the best albums ever written today! Superb lyricism, wonderful guitarwork throughout, perfectly fit for one of the greats of our time.
First time willingly listening to Buddy Holly at all, can definitely understand how women from the 50s would go crazy over him. I think it's perfectly fine and representative of the time, and I can definitely hear the influences. I'd put it on this list for sure, it's a classic, however not sure if I'd ever listen to this again.
If I wanted to listen to jazz, I'd listen to jazz. If I wanted to listen to spoken word, I'd listen to spoken word. I would NEVER try to create both at the same time.
Pleasantly surprised! Loved the chamber pop melodies here. Mermaid Smiled is so so beautiful. Will listen again
Reminded me of Elton John, kind of. Liked the guitar work but I think it all blended together
Almost too positive, threw me off.
Surprisingly enjoyed this! Obviously some hard rock and some sex appeal screaming throughout but I thought it'd be a lot more offensive
I’m just confused. What the hell? Am I supposed to be high while listening to this? Am I high right now?
First, fuck Morrissey. Second, I think this album is just fine. I don't know what it is, but I never understood the obsession people have with it. There are some catchy tunes (There Is A Light and Bigfoot in particular) but the immense whining voice and self-loathing is just insufferable at times. Bumped down a half star for Morrissey existing.
Killer front half, forgettable back half. I do like synth-pop and I recognize their impact on modern synth-pop but I'd imagine their other albums are better.
Heck yeah. Great, easy-listening country tunes. Wish I had bought this on vinyl to listen first, feels like it needs some crackling to feel truly authentic
Forgettable. Repeatable. Dull.
I (generally) like jangle and britpop from the late 80s/early 90s, so this was right up my alley. Enjoyed the deeper cuts more than There She Goes, actually. Just wish the sound were a bit more varied.
Was pretty close to falling asleep during most of this, honestly. Not a huge fan
I have never been a big Bowie guy, full disclosure. I liked the first half a bit more than the ambient/electronic second half, but generally enjoyed this more than I have other Bowie records. Hoping there's one in here that ends up making his whole schtick click for me
I think this suffers the same problem as the Crickets album - both very stuck in their time, a time so far removed from pop of the modern day. Though this is more enjoyable than the Crickets album and it should definitely be on this list, not sure I'll listen to this again.
This feels like an evolution of trip-hop that Dummy created, the (at the time, I guess) modern tech really fits with the vocals. That said, I still like Beth Gibbons' solo work more than this.
I'll be honest. As this is my first Billy Joel album to come up on this list, I was ready to come in here and absolutely dog on him for being bland, unoriginal, etc.
I gave this record another spin and realized something. This reads like a Greatest Hits album. Now, granted, 6 tracks here were released as singles, but I've heard, literally, a majority of the songs on this album for my entire life, either through my parents (yeah they had Just The Way You Are as their wedding song, too, so what?) or through the radio. The A side is absolutely loaded, I've never seen anything like it.
And it's not like the songs are truly bad either - they're catchy and musically well written! The lyrics aren't gonna stun you with their wisdom, but they're relatable. I'm not going to sit here and decree that RADIO MUSIC = BAD, because who am I to act like I know better than what millions upon millions of other people have decided they really enjoy. The criticisms I mentioned above are valid for Billy's other albums, but not for this one. I cannot give this anything lower than 4.5 stars, but I'm bumping this down to 4 because this isn't my favorite album of all time, but the popularity and impact of this album is undeniable.
Good album, but can't help but wonder what it would have looked like in its' intended form. RIP Brian.
Really enjoyed this one! Incredibly well mixed, and Dusty's voice does wonders to make this feel so warm and rich.
Some nice jazz. Would be nice to put on in the background while I work.
This was a pleasant surprise. A little eclectic at times, but I found this album generally pretty groovy. This might enter the rotation for me.
I really wish I could like this more. Just find it uninteresting, I don't know.
Another phenomenal Neil Young album. 2/2 on this list so far, maybe I never gave him enough credit before this list.
Just not my genre unfortunately. Not as bad as the last album of this style I listened to
I understand the whole other devil persona bit Eminem goes for with Slim Shady, and I knew what I was getting into with this album. Did not make it any more enjoyable, he has better songs/albums than this.
I respect the album but I'm just not huge on the heavy metal. Guitars were fine, will not go back to this
My favorite coldplay album! I know it's really popular to dunk on them for being radiohead clones or what have you, but you can't deny that this is some great arena rock.
The best S&G album, and one of the best albums ever written, bar none. Plenty to love here, from the title track to one of the best storytelling songs penned (The Boxer) to the gorgeous harmonies on The Only Living Boy in New York... what I wouldn't give to listen to this album for the first time again.
Some delightful boops and beeps in here
Couldn't finish this one. I got the vibe after 3 songs
Pleasant but forgettable. Right down the middle for me. Rounding up because it's pleasant.
Another great discovery! This is a wonderful album that fills that Pet Sounds and Abbey Road-esque hole in my heart. The opener and closer are bangers, the middle can get slow but the harmonies and brightness of it make up for it. Very glad to rate this a 4.5, bumped up because why not
Man the top negative reviews for this album seem slightly racist.
Anyway, this album holds a special place in my heart, although I like Blonde slightly more. Frank has one of the best singing voices in modern music and Channel Orange is the proof. The production and instrumentation here shapeshift with each song and as the story (Frank's emotional growth) continues. Super Rich Kids and Pyramids are lauded as two of Frank's best, rightfully so, and the radio hits are popular for a reason (Lost and Thinkin Bout You, respectfully), but the deep cuts here are incredible (Monks, Pilot Jones, Forrest Gump, Crack Rock.... man). Easy 4.5, bumping to 5 because it's my ratings so why the hell not
Really been hit after hit of albums I've never heard lately. This is one of the warmest, most relaxing albums I've had the pleasure of listening to - the vocals are buttery, the sax and guitar are mixed incredibly well, and the percussion blends in so well you completely forget it's there. Another 4.5 that I'm bumping up to a 5 heck yeah
Pleasant but forgettable, that's all I've got to say about that
I wanted to wait until I got this on vinyl to listen to it for the first time but this felt like fate - what an album. Played it all weekend. Easy 5 stars
Absolutely could not stand this one. Beck has better.
I mean come on. I’d argue this is the most famous album ever made. Argue with a wall. Not my favorite, so I’d probably give it a 4, but anything less feels blasphemous
Biggest takeaway from this album is I really wish Kanye wasn't a douchebag. This is him at his best productionwise - the beats are soulful and chopped, Common drops bar after bar, and it combines for an incredibly enjoyable rap album. Easy 4 stars.
Perfectly fine. Enjoyable but not memorable, not something I could see myself returning to. Bumping up to 3 stars because it's enjoyable
The highs are very high, but the lows are now great. Maybe if I was born in the late 70s and had that teenage angst or if I liked grunge rock more I'd feel more strongly about this album, but this just isn't for me. However, the first three tracks are great! 2.5 stars but bumping down to 2 because I don't think I'm gonna return to this
I really try to be open to experimental music, but this just doesn't feel like music at all, does it?
I discovered this album, and subsequently this band, in high school. I pretty quickly realized the greatness of songs like All My Friends, New York I Love You, Someone Great, Us vs. Them. But the rest of the songs I thought were filler.
Coming back to this years later has made me realize how great of an album this is, front-to-back. All insanely danceable and catchy. Plus this band has one of the most energetic live shows I've ever seen.
4.5 stars, bumping to 5
Easily the most enjoyable Bowie album I've had thus far. Maybe Ziggy will be different. Great melodies and production but his voice still isn't my favorite thing. 3.5 rounding down to 3
Favorite Zeppelin album so far! Easy 5.
Enjoyable! Shocked at how much I recognized from either guitar hero or the radio. Bumping down a half star because it's not the greatest album ever.
Pretty good! First half was good, second half was alright. Papa Was A Rolling Stone was super cool, but part of me wishes there was a bigger buildup.
Groundbreaking? No, not really, it doesn't stick out from the other 2000s female rap/R&B I've gotten on this list so far (Missy Elliott, hints of Lauryn Hill). Do I HAVE to listen to this before I die? Ehhhhh, not sure about that one.
Enjoyable, though? Yeah! I liked the beats and the singing, albeit a little stuck in its' era. The record also drags a bit longer than I'd like. Deserves 2.5 stars but bumping down to 2.
Certainly good, and the highs are some of the best songs ever written. However, I can't get past some of the songs I'm not particularly fond of (most of the A-side, really), so I'm bumping this down from 3.5 to 3.
The most Foo Fighters Foo Fighters album that ever Foo Fightersed. The Colour and the Shape is better
Just really not my jam. Not the worst I've heard here, but I feel like I've heard better gothic/depressing rock than this so far on this list. I also think The Cure does it better.
A little long but the songs were certainly enjoyable
Nice that I got both Joy Division albums within days of each other, what are the odds? Both first listens (yeah I'm just getting on my music listening journey cut me some slack), but I found this one to be substantially better. Less self-loathing and catchier perhaps? Still not gonna give it above a 3, but I could see this one growing on me with repeated listens.
Not my favorite Stevie Wonder album, but almost anything he puts out is going to clear most artists' entire discographies, hah. You can definitely hear him develop his artistry on this album, through songs like Superstition, You and I, You've Got it, etc. 4 stars easy
I only had to listen to the first few songs to get an idea of what this was. Not for me.
Inoffensive bossa nova. Can't complain!
Enjoyable! The Apple Music version had a few extra songs which were nice, but the live versions at Newport were better. 3.5, bumping to 4
A great album with plenty of hits. I don't usually return to the full thing but it was enjoyable on my listens today. Still a few tracks I'm not huge on, but 4 stars is certainly fair
Never heard this album before but I feel like I've heard it a hundred times
Didn't mind this one! Can definitely see the inspiration from the Marty Robbins album I got earlier, but in the same vein I can't see any of these standing out in particular. Just an enjoyable twangy listen.
Man, absolutely could not stand this, even worse than nevermind. I genuinely really wish I appreciated this band more but this has taught me that I do not and cannot.
A classic. 80s synthpop at its' best. Yes, some slower tracks, but the faster paced tracks make it worth it imo. 4 stars easy
Enjoyable listen! Love the vocal harmonies of these three across the whole thing. Guinnevere is such a beautiful haunting track, one of their best. 3.5 bumped to 4
This album has been on my list to listen forever, and I was fortunate enough to find this as my selection today. I think this is a fantastic album, but I came in expecting for this to sound like a Beatles album. It certainly did at points, but at others it certainly did NOT. 4 stars, though in the future I can see this bumping up to 5.
I really think my problem is that I didn't grow up with nirvana the way most people here did. I think this is a good acoustic set, but certainly not one of the best ever put to wax. Love the closer but that's really all.
Good but not great. I think the way the album ended left a really bad taste in my mouth - a thud rather than a bang, you know? Bumping to 4 stars from 3.5
Gave this a shot once, didn’t like it. Gave it another shot today, still don’t like it, but I liked it enough to not give it 1 star like I planned - there are some good moments on here (Where the Wild Roses Grow, Henry Lee), but O’Malley’s Bar STILL runs on 10 minutes too long.
Sounded like the same song 12 times in a row, even the ones I know I’ve heard before. Not a fan
A second straight day of albums where every track feels the same, outside of the one I know (which still sounds the same as the rest). Not bad by any stretch, just repetitive. 2.5 rounded to 2
Didn’t like this as much as Let It Bleed, but still enjoyable! Wild horses and brown sugar are the highlights, great blues rock all around. 3.5 rounded down
Honestly this is the first album I've laughed at on first sight. What the hell did Cee Lo Green do to get an album on this list, and if there was one, why is it one that's over an HOUR LONG?????
That said, music itself wasn’t offensive, but also laughed out loud at Cee Lo rapping. I’d love to speak to whoever decided the man with the golden voice should be a rapper. 2.5 rounded to 2.
Man, I do like pink floyd, but this feels pretentious and long even for them. So many forgettable tracks. Only keeping this at a 2 because i'd feel bad having them in my least favorite albums at all.
Enjoyed this more than I thought! Catchy hooks, voice was a little annoying but I got over it by the middle of the album. 3.5 rounded to 4
Shocked that this album didn’t come out in 1985. Hugely influential, very poppy but largely for that reason. Loved All Mixed Up as well as the hit singles
Perfectly fine! Not a fan of the title track but there are several other decent tracks here.
Some good tracks, some bad ones. They all combine to sound like something I feel like I've heard before. Not sure how to take it other than 2 stars.
Not great. Not enough happening outside of the spoken word parts to justify the song lengths. Gloria is a good song, but the rest is immensely forgettable and not anything I wanna listen to ever again.
Had higher hopes going into this. Just not my favorite older rap album I’ve had so far. Beats sounded similar on most songs, but they were generally still good.
Not bad. Judging by the "albums you MUST listen to" criteria, though, I'm not sure that this album belongs on this list. Just inoffensive soft pop. Middle of the road. 3 stars.
Honestly this is getting 1 star because I couldn't get this on Apple Music and when I did it was just not that great.
Much better than astral weeks. Really enjoyable music! The sound of the 70s imo.
Every David Bowie album that shows up here further solidifies my opinion that I’m just not a fan. I wish I liked his voice more!
Christina Aguilera suffers from the Adele problem of having an incredible voice but making the most mediocre, bland, derivative soul-pop imaginable. (Maybe it’s the other way around?)
Now, I gave Adele the benefit of the doubt because I grew up with her music and I have a lot of nostalgia associated with her sophomore record, but Aguilera doesn’t have that bias within me and as such I feel like I can see it for what it is. Not even to mention that this is a DOUBLE RECORD???? I admire the passion, but this does not have the uniqueness or staying power to last that long. I got the vibe of this album after 4 songs, lol.
1.5 stars, rounded to 1 for disappointment.
Not nearly as bad as the reviews would dictate. Not particularly memorable but certainly inoffensive new wave.
Liked this more than the last Kinks album! Felt more cohesive with better hooks, plus I love that mid-late 60s sound.
Great as always. Slower than the other three I’ve listened to before, but still high-quality hooks and songwriting.
Never listened to this album before because I heard it was Kid A leftovers. I can hear why this is the case (Morning Bell is literally on here again, love that song so I can't hate). A lot of boops and beeps. I'm not a huge Kid A fan so that doesn't help, but Pyramid Song alone bumps this to 3 stars for me.
Again, pretty solid Elvis Costello album! Bumped 3.5 up to 4
I have always wanted to listen to this album. Well, maybe WANTED to is the wrong word, needed to but put off is the better term. I know Bob Dylan is the greatest songwriter possibly ever, and this has been on every "greatest album of all time" list since before I was born, but I cannot STAND the guy's voice. I've tried but I can't. This album reaffirmed my opinion on his voice, but the songwriting was also very good (outside of the 11 minute closer, christ). 3.5 rounded to 3 because of the voice.
I enjoyed this one! Not particularly significant but good music in my opinion. 3.5 rounded to 4.
I enjoyed this a lot more than the last Smiths album I got. However fuck Morrissey now and forever
Beeps and boops. Sounds so dated, just not a fan at all.
I can see why mothers in the 80s were scared of this music. Lyrically kinda grim but musically pretty great. Averages to a 3.
Great beats and sampling. Loved the themeing. Not sure I would call this rap, but, I guess it's as close as you could get.
This felt like I was stuck in a mario kart track (not a complement). Unnecessary listening
I enjoyed this a bit! Good blues rock, got me reading into her story a bit, a shame what happened.
Love Tribe. Some dated beats and bars so giving a 4
Man, like a derivative Radiohead and Oasis that drags waaaaaaay too long. Why the hell are these guys on here twice? 1 out of spite.
Absolutely love this album. Feels both incredibly influential and timeless. Love the hooks and the production level here.
Feels like I’ve listened to several nick cave albums now. All of them just fine.
Just not a fan of this style of music. I’ve tried and failed a few times now. I expect for this to stay a 1 for me
Some good new wave to start out the day is always refreshing!
Listened twice today. Just a truly all around incredible album. Several classics, and even fitter happier works in the context of this album. 5 stars
Totally fine, nothing memorable
Not my favorite. +1 because I recognized some songs from childhood (thanks dad), but just not the type of music I would go back and listen to.
Of the heavier albums I've gotten, this is definitely the most enjoyable. Good political message, voice, guitars. That, or the Paul Ryan review at the top gave me a huge chuckle.
Enjoyable listen at work, I think I'm a fan of blues rock.
Enjoyed this more than I thought! Feels like “Is This It” in that there’s all killer no filler here. Rounding down to 4 since a lot of the songs sound similar
One of my favorite albums of all time! I get the voice and atmosphere Sufjan creates can be offputting to some, but the lush sonic landscape, the instrumentation, and the story each song tells combine to one of the most enjoyable experiences one can have listening to music. I get chills whenever I hear the opening piano notes of the opening track.
Some of Sufjan's best work is here (Chicago, John Wayne Gacy, Predatory Wasp), alongside some underrated gems like The Tallest Man and The Avalanche (outtake, I get it, but still one of his best). I think the longer intermission song titles are funny but understand if they come off as bizarre - just can't take the album too seriously.
5 stars, if you enjoyed this PLEASE give Michigan and Carrie & Lowell a chance - his two best pieces of work in my humble opinion.
Really liked this. What a happy guy!
Whatever country, really. Not my favorite genre
