Reviews (page 2 of 7)
I think missy could've made some real proper all time greats but was held back to some extent by the industry expecting her to be tied into the mellow rnb side of things. This is almost there and has tracks that would be at home on an all time great hip hop album but the whole tracklist doesn't quite get there and that's super dissapointing to me because Missy had the ability if she'd been allowed the freedom that other artists were at the time. That being said this album is still a great time and a really enjoyable time capsule for this period
This is a classic...for its production and uniqueness. And within the album, although she touts her "rapping," I think she knows it. She brings a style and it feels largely improvised, but it's a great groove. Also, it means my man Busta made the list. Which is validating some.
It is Supa Dupa Fly. My wife grew up listening to Missy Elliott. This album sounds like a good time.
she's so cool
Chill and energetic all at once. Captures the moment in time but also timeless.
Missy being missy
Pass da blunt love to see it
Amazing. So fun. Legendary. Love love love. I can’t stand the rain!
Makes me want to walk like Christoper Walken in that Fat Boy Slim video. Favorite track is Why You Hurt Me.
Even though I found a lot of Apple Music's Top 100 albums of all time to be...divisive, I can totally see why this album is on there (though I don't know its placement on the list, probably somewhere stupid). I'll admit that I listened to about half of it relatively passively so I didn't listen to a lot of the lyrics. I was struck by the beats and rhythms for almost every song. Catchy and dynamic shit here. I like Missy's voice as well and the features on this album are always a cool treat and never overstay their welcomes. Cocky and confident but never undeserved. I will definitely be listening again. 5
This is the funkiest rap album I can remember ever hearing. It's awesome. Favorite track: Don't Be Coming (In My Face)
Absolutely shocked by how negative these reviews are. Maybe just because I'm a huge fan of Timbaland, but I think this album is fantastic
Missy Elliott had years of experience as a writer and performer before releasing her debut. That maturity shows. In addition, her close working relationship with influential producer Timbaland is on full display here as well. This is an exceptional release. It was not written for me. This is a black urban album from a woman's perspective. That in and of itself would put it on my list. However, the music is creative and exceptional throughout. Timbaland's style (I call it stutter stop production, but I am sure there is a better phrase) became ubiquitous in the decade, but I am not sure the work with Miss Elliott is not the peak.
Wow. How did this come out in 1997 am still sound like the future in 2022? The production and rapping were both great and it clearly influenced everyone from OutKast to Drake who pushed hip hop to be more ambitious as a genre. And this was a debut album?! Extremely bold but it works! I never heard this before and will need to relisten to fully grasp it all.
This album is super-duper fly.
Missy created a classic album with this one!
5/5. Every song was enjoyable and fun and the beats were amazing. Some okay songs but no bad ones.
When this album appeared, I cheered aloud! So excited to finally see Missy on the list. Top notch!!!
Great samples. Very entertaining. Loved it.
great
Incredible album. You could tell Missy and Timbaland we’re gonna be stars from the beginning.
crying, screaming, throwing up this album is so good!!! sock it 2 me, the rain, izzy izzy ahh were so good. something abt the sound of this album rlly tickled my brain in the best way. pass da blunt SENT MEEEE lmao bc pass the dutchie has been on my rotation lately & i did not expect to hear it here. I love how she references some rlly classic songs in such an original way, it's rlly well done ❤️❤️❤️
A quarter century old and still sounds fresh and modern as can be.
Another incredible debut
This was great! Loved her voice.
Just a transcendent hip-hop record that still feels groundbreaking 25 years later.
Always a pleasure.
They don’t wanna fuck w me!!
Missy is a queen. Point blank, period.
this is a great album! Missy is so cool and I absolutely love seeing this on the list
so good! so many killer features and production is on point on every single track!
More Missy, yes please
Early Timbaland and Missy. Some of the greats.
Supa Dupa Good xD
I LOOOOOOVED THIS ONE its like aaliyah if she had another secret album with timbaland in the 90s it was lowkey repetitive in some parts bas love love love
Great album
what can u say but slay. not something i rly have a lot of specific thoughts on....way less outright Bangers on here than i maybe expected but it all just cuts out the biggest possible room for missy and her bottomless well of charisma, plus the golden age of timbaland. just an undeniably great way to spend an hour!
Absolute masterclass from Timbaland. Vocals were okay but just a great collection of beats from the master of the early 2000s, filled with catchy songs and features
RATING: 8/10 HIGHLIGHT: Beep Me 911 LOWLIGHT: They Don't Wanna Fuck Wit Me
Timbaland beats still sound fresh. Missy is more interesting than most.
toller abschluss einer hip-hop-woche. coole bests, tolle stimme und einfach toll produziert.
Slow hip hop sounds strange but this is good! A good mix of singing and rapping.
Good album. I Can't Stand the Rain is still my favorite jam here, but almost all the tracks have something going for them. As I've stated in other reviews, I have a dichotomy where I'm not a huge fan of modern R&B, but I do like hip-hop, so my preference here is where Missy goes into the rap versus when she's doing more R&B-style singing. The biggest selling point, though, is the production. Absolutely banger backing tracks from Timbaland here.
Die späteren Alben sind noch besser. Aber das ist schon sehr cool.
I’m not the biggest rap fan but this was good. Solidly entertaining throughout with pretty great production
Tell me where the party at! Where the party at! Where the party at! I liked the Missy Elliott record that I had yesterday, and I like this one too. There is some more tuneful r&b kinda stuff on it, but it doesn't slow it down. There's always a solid beat happening in the background; the repeating beat in "They Don't Wanna Fuck Wit Me," for example. I particularly enjoyed "Pass the Blunt" with its amusing quotes of "Pass the Dutchie" by Musical Youth. Again I don't know how often I'll go back to this record, but I'm really enjoying it now - 4 stars
I liked this! It definitely didn't have her hits, but it's a great breakout album. I liked Sock it 2 Me and Don't Be Comin'
This more r &b sound isn’t where my brain goes when I think of missy elliott, but I honestly really liked it. Timbaland is a great producer, missy is a good singer, and this worked pretty well
Really really good Perhaps a touch too long But everything on it is good. No skits, just proper good stuff, good grooves, great samples 4so
Missy’s debut isn’t her best work, but it is an important album to have on the list, as it was a huge breakthrough and validation for female rappers. Timbaland’s production goes fuckin crazy, the beats are so good, and Missy’s flow is smooth as well. Only thing I wish was different was the over-reliance on features; only 5 of the 17 tracks are just Missy rapping, but I get why they did it, they were taking a chance on a new female rapper and wanted to set her up to succeed (could have done without the ‘Pony’ remix with Ginuwine). Another one that would be a perfect 3.5, but I’ll bump it up to a low 4/5 due to its historical significance in the hip hop genre. A good listen!
Very very good. Ms Missy delivers a vibe with great rhymes and vibes. Her collabs really work, adding diverse sounds within a tight package. A 4.
This was good. She really loads the album up with features. Fun vibes.

There's a lot more singing here than I expected. They Don't Wanna has that telecaster funk. I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. Definitely going to listen again.
Ich finde das Album ist supa dupa fly
Album #82, Missy Elliott, Supa Dupa Fly, ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Fuck. I didn’t see this one coming at all. Missy Elliott was a bit before my time. By the mid 2000s she’d kind of stopped releasing her own studio stuff, and the only track I really knew was “Get Ur Freak On.” I knew Timbaland more from his huge commercial run with Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake, which I never really cared for. But this is the kind of music that got him there, and I had no idea it was this good. The beats are incredible. They’re sparse but still complex, glitchy, spacey, and just very cool. It sounds like Southern and New York hip hop colliding in a really seamless way. Add in the vocals across the album and you get this brilliant kind of neo-soul feel. If this came out today it wouldn’t sound out of place at all. It makes a lot of its contemporaries sound really dated. Missy herself is great. She avoids any kind of Female MC stereotype and approaches everything with a sense of playfulness. It’s fun, it’s cool, but there’s also a seriousness to it when it needs it. “The Rain” is the standout. That track alone has shot right up into my personal list of the best hip hop songs I’ve ever heard. This was heading towards a five, but it’s the same issue I have with a lot of hip hop albums. It’s too long. It sags towards the end and feels very top heavy. Funnily enough, one of the last tracks, “I’m Talkin’,” where she’s bragging about being so good at rapping, is actually one of the weaker moments. Still, I was genuinely delighted by this. I never would have listened to it without doing this project, and it’s a great discovery.
Bloody Brilliant Stuff Baby x
This shits good.
The video for The Rain will be forever engrained in my memory... and while I thought it was OK at the time, what I didn't realize is that this album had other tracks that I thought were better, but didn't have the radio rotation play.
So good!! Of its time, in the best way possible. Happy to rediscover Missy Elliott.
1001 blesst mich mit mega lange albe aber das fangt wenigstens smooth ah beat isch super. busta haha sini lacher sind super. er isch basically ihren opener da isch geil. hit em with da hee erste missy song und sie isch huuere cool zum zuelose. sock it 2 me coole beat aber er wird mit de ziit chli nervig. da brat rappt wie sie heisst und finds no cool. de mittelname misdemeanor isch so geil. i cant stand the rain sample bi supa dupa fly? ich check de interlude dass lüt wönd ihren style bite. es schiint recht wegwiisend gsi zsii rein vode beats her und sie rappt huuuere cool. es isch schwierig zum öpis zum kritisiere finde a dem album finds würkli durs band guet aber s nimmt mi au nöd immer mit. so de smoothi r&b us dere ziit isch mer amel chli zu smooth. aber sie haut use nimmt keis blatt vors muul und isch au funny. im einte song seit sie sie hittet eim mitem BRR und da isch cool. git glaub e vieri. ah und z lang isches leider. good as hell production, lyrics are inconsistent but the presentation makes up for that in spades. lots of features but they're all pretty good.
Amazing rap album so many good features so many good beats by Timbaland. So many good songs, found some new songs that I like overall a great listen
Taattua Timbalandia
Probably prefer her more overtly freak-tastic albums that would follow but still think this pretty good.
Ouais pas mal
Rating: 9/10 Missy has swag, Timbo has the beats. Great combination.
Enjoyed. 4/5
Prime Missy + Prime Timbaland Productions = ⛽️
This is probably not Missy’s best project but the music is still incredible to listen to. I also understand the people saying that it went on because it is a super long debut album and it does drag at points. BUT the production, the hooks, the verses from rap legends and the historic debut of a Hip Hop legend in her own right. I love the way she blends R&B with rapping she was ahead of her time with it. Her & Timb, two 757 South East VA legends made a great album in totality. I would still hope to hear her better and more influential projects later.
A very influential album by Missy with extremely creative production even by today's standards. 4/5
Pretty cool. Even the weaker songs on the album had me interested. I guess my main complaint is that it is reliant on collabs but I guess it's just the done thing.
7/10
THAT'S WHY SHE'S THE SHIT!!!!
Good
Chuli
Such a great Hip Hop record. Timberland, The Brat, Busta, pure 90s goodness
I’m at a 4. Missy Elliott’s debut, and honestly? A pretty damn good debut. Timbaland’s production is really on point here, occasionally jumping ahead about 5 years in ways that feels really ahead of everyone else in 1997, most apparent on “Beep Me 911”, which is probably my favorite track here. Missy’s rap flow is just as good as it was on “Under Construction”, as is her singing voice, and she never puts in a bad performance. Her lyricism hasn’t quite caught up though, and between that & the album losing a lot of its steam after “Izzy Izzy Ahh”, that’s where I’m stuck at a 4. This album does roll really nicely through its first 12 tracks, but once “Friendly Skies”, “Best Friends” & “Don’t Be Comin’” kinda hit a one-note topic for all of their runtimes, along with “Izzy Izzy Ahh” rehashing some of the “Me & Timbaland are REALLY good together!” topics that were already touched on earlier in the album, the cracks fully start to come in with “Why You Hurt Me”. I do think it’s a good track, but it’s an unbefitting track, and one that feels needlessly mean for an album centered around black female empowerment. I understand warning the ladies not to get too promiscuous to the point where it hurts your image, but affirming it by calling Loosie Booty an “ugly bitch”, along with the ‘chicken’ & ‘cotton-pickin’ lines feels like a direct antithesis to everything Missy has preached about on the album to that point, even if it’s just used as shock value for emphasis. It derails the whole thing to me. “I’m Talkin’” is… well, it’s just “Izzy Izzy Ahh” again, really, and nowhere near as catchy. It’s the same thing that plagued Queen Latifah’s debut album where the entire track is just about herself, and we’ve kinda done that already. If you have to sing “I’m such a good rapper” in your chorus, it feels a little off, you know? “Gettaway” is fine, but none of the 3 verses really connect at all, making the track feel incomplete. Since it’s the closing track of the album, it’s a really weak way to finish off the whole thing, especially with Busta Rhymes talking about a “whole emotional rollercoaster” right after. If this album had ended at “Izzy Izzy Ahh”, or even ended on “I’m Talkin’” with all the shoutouts at the end, I might be inclined to look past the slow stumble and bump this up to a 5, but I can’t do it in good faith. I think it’s still worth listening to, don’t get me wrong, but it is frustrating that this got hit with the CD bloat curse. It’s certainly influential, and deserves a lot of the awards it got for its individual tracks, but there’s a reason the album dwindles in plays on Spotify the longer it goes – the later tracks are just that much weaker. It’s still definitely a 4, entirely on the strength of the first 12 tracks, but that’s kinda where the ceiling sits. It just doesn’t finish satisfyingly as a full album, even when it gets 80% of the way there. I did enjoy it though, and I’ll definitely add a lot of these to my big playlist. Really fun stuff, for the most part. Just a 4 though.
not bad
4/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/missy-misdemeanor-elliott/supa-dupa-fly/ Far from the absolute canon of hiphop and definitely too long, but sure has some great beats and features, and Missy’s laid-back rapping can be quite hypnotizing.
Revelation and my new female hip-hop artist; not one track out of place, beats by Timbaland outstanding. Missy has a great voice, fantastic timing and flow. True Diva of the genre.
Wow! Amazing hip hop album.
A solid foundation in the beats made this a surprisingly enjoyable listen (as this is definitely outside my genres of choice). I found Missy's direct address at the end very endearing and human as well.
fireeeeee missy is so her 4.5
Came in not expecting to like it. In the rain is amazing and I really enjoyed the first half. I think it dropped off towards the end though
Great beats and vibe
Pavimentou o caminho do bem com o timbaland
My second Missy Elliott album for this in the space of about a week! None of the songs on here are quite as good as "Work It", but the production here sounds great and overall I prefer this album. I looked a bit more into her career and found out she started out her career as a producer for people like Aaliyah, so I guess I shouldn't really be shocked her own album has great production.
can sound a bit samey on the surface but it's worth paying attention
Amazing listening to this for the first time in a while and realising quite how many subsequent albums it influenced. Also amazing how little it seems to have dated.
Love this. Timbaland's statacco beats still sound so good, and Missy just comes out fully formed here.
I never really listened to Missy Elliott but I thought this was very good. Production was excellent, features were pretty good, although used in an old school way, and vocals were good. I liked it more than I thought I would. Better than that mumble crap they make today that's for sure.
This album shines more when Missy has more verses and Timbaland gets more and more in to his own head on the beats and production. The prime example is "The Rain" of course but "Pass da blunt" has the same kind of vibe. Missy's early style is more my speed; I like her off beat (literally) phrasing and her capability to drag a sentence over multiple bars without using a pile of filler words. As the album keeps going it unfortunately gets less interesting. The production gets a bit more simplistic and falls in to the 90's method of electronic drums and mostly live sounding instruments. The raps get more simplistic and the style less interesting. The R&B songs are really forgettable (Why You Hurt Me, Friendly Skies). Thankfully it closes out on Gettaway, which has a great beat and Missy takes the center stage despite the extra features. I liked this, I just think there's too much filler.
hell yeah
A forgotten favorite for sure.
Missy makes rap easy to listen to. Loved the song with Aaliyah, Best Friends
missy elliot never misses
Man Missy Elliott was such a superstar while I was in middle school and high school. She really paved the way for the Lizzo’s, Nikki Minaj’, and Megan Thee Stallion’s of the world. Her debut is a very solid record. It’s a bit long like most hip hop albums of the era, but there isn’t much fluff here and it serves as great background music for a workout or to vibe to.
Missy and Timba, a powerful combination. If it only brought us The Rain, it would be tremendous use of the 2 weeks they used to make this album. The rest is gravy...savory, delicious gravy.
Great 1st listen for me and really liked it. Some notes... The first song of Missy's debut album is Busta Rhymes introducing Missy. There's a thank you / prayer at the end before closing out the last song... don't see either of those much. Missy & Timbaland is awesome. This would be a solid album without lyrics but cool hearing generational talents.
So classic and so good the missy / timbaland sound is in full effect and such a great vibe throughout. She established herself as a force to be reckoned with on this album.
Pretty fun and funky listen.
Real good.
Enjoyed the blend of rap and r&b on this one. Missy is the queen of rap no matter what any one has to say lmao
Great Album but holy shit Timbaland shut your fucking mouth
Fire
The 90s were a time. Timbaland, at his timbalandist. Fun raps lots of guests, some legendary ie Aaliyah and Busta some I do not remember if I ever heard of - 702, magoo, etc. The production while painfully timbalandish is good. Ann Peebles sample, memphis shit. Everyone seems like they're having a good time.
Had zero expectations going into this, but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Not my usual cup of tea, but I found myself nodding along to almost all songs on this record. She says herself in the last "song" that the record was produced by Timbaland, and I thought "aha, that's why it sounds so good", knowing he's revered in the hip hop industry for good sounding beats. It feels weird, but I kind of want to put a weak 4 on this. Mostly I think I just got really excited about actually appreciating an album when hearing it for the first time, which is very unusual for me.
What a good debut album. Timbaland’s production and Missy were made for each other. I’d never listened to this album beyond the singles, but i think it stands up against her best work. The procession of guests perfectly complement their tracks. I’ll even forgive the trademark Ginuwine boinging noises.
Kinda slow and heavy in a good/chill kinda way. I like it.
Up-and-down songs. Old-style hip hop. Starts of good but kind of drops off towards the end.
7/10
Yassss, Missy. Every time I hear a 90’s female rapper it just reminds me of how Bo$$ released a single album under Def Jam and it FUCKING SLAPPEDDDD. But then she got sick/took a break for awhile, and upon trying to come back, Def Jef (who she recorded with) approached tons of huge indie labels… who all just asked what she looked like. You are not allowed to be a successful female rapper without also being a sex icon. Actually, one of the big appeals of Bo$$ for me was her gangsta style and “lack" of sexuality. She was tough. And then she died… Sorry this has nothing to do with Missy Elliot. She absolutely deserves the fame she has achieved, as well. Her mother and her escaped domestic abuse from her father, and in seeing her mother’s strength in this situation, she recognised her own strength. Very positive music for someone who endured a lot. I’m giving this album 4 stars, though it's realistically more a 3, purely bc of what it represents. I don’t think it’s Missy’s best, but it is her debut.
supa dupa
Enjoyed the plethora of features! Felt cohesive on some tracks. Overall, felt timeless. Missy is dope.
Classic Missy
What an iconic choice having Busta Rhymes interludes bookending the album. There are definitely ideas that were improved upon later, but this is a great foundation for that future growth. My sense of time always gets so fucked up when I see all the different collaborators and features coming together like this. Really saw then vision of this as a cornerstone in that late 90's sound. 4-4.5
Oops, I was gonna complain about the lack of hip hop so far and then we get hit with this classic. We’ve all heard ‘Under Construction,’ but Missy feels a lot freer on this one. She and Timbaland are just so good together, but these songs don’t feel as timeless as anything on ‘Under Construction.’ I do think it’s weird that Busta is the first voice we hear on her debut album, but overall a great feature list. Da Brat is underrated. Lil Kim, Ginuwine, and Aaliyah all on the same album is nuts! Great stuff.
Supa dupa good shit
It makes more than a little sense that Missy's debut is bookended by Busta, that other rapper whose ad-libs don't ornament but substantiate: 'ficky-ficky-ficky-ficky-ficky-ficky-ficky'; 'Iza bah bah zah zay / Iza zah zah zah zay'; 'Bam bam bam bam bili bili bom / Bam bili bili bili bili bili bili bom.' Like B.I.G., Elliott is so rhythmically gifted that one is inclined to pass over her lyricism, a shame since she's invested in rhymed content as well as sound. Like Lauryn, she raps and sings, often saving her best writing for the non-rapping parts: 'You don't wanna date / No ifs ands or waits, it's over babe.' And like none, she essentially invented vibe in the hip-hop context. I have but one doubt w/ this one, notably that it's a bit one-note, but a classic it is.
3.5-4 stars for me. good hip hop album!!
An exciting trip back to the late 90s! Seeing the “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” video on MTV for the first time was mesmerizing. So much so that I even quote the song in one of my own! I remember having a crush on Missy back in High School and feeling like it was wrong cuz she was a slightly bigger woman, but this album brought that crush back in full force with zero apprehension. Catchy, era defining, yet timeless. In only one more year, good music would be on the threat of extinction with the release of KISS’s 1998 apocalyptic abomination “Psycho Circus”, but luckily we received this gem before having to rebuild from that tragedy. It became our soundtrack for a better tomorrow. A future of blunts, big booties, and bitchin’ cars. A future Missy Elliot made us realize IS possible… if we believe.
Some good R&B/Hip Hop. Not mormally my thing, but it was catchy and fun.
She shouts out Timbaland a few too many times, but in her defense, not many debut albums are going to kick things off with a run of singles as viciously smooth as “Hit Em”, “Sock It”, and “The Rain.” Throughout the album, ME marries radio-ready R&B hooks with fluid braggadocio about as well as any 90s album could. Peaks: Izzy Izzy Ahh, The Rain, I’m Talkin Pits: the number of times I’m reminded who the producer is
O album tem estilo, requinte, um magnetismo próprio porém algo me diz que ele não explode como deveria, ou era a intenção.
Lots of fun tracks on this. Basically my 90s gym mix.
I saw the number of features on this album and got a little scared that they were gonna drown out Missy Elliott on her own album. Glad to know that really isn't the case here. She sings and raps really well and it brings an album that's as good as it is varied. Always a big fan of the really driving soul feel that the album and others like it have.
This was fun!
I've heard most of these tracks on the radio back in the day (Timberland is all over this) but I hadn't heard most of the other tracks and I was surprised how much R&B this album was. The 90s were really just a different vibe.
J'aime bien Missy Elliott.
89/100. A bold, inventive R&B/hip-hop record that still feels fresh. Timbaland’s production is top-tier. Slick, futuristic, and full of bounce, laying the perfect foundation for Elliott’s charisma and razor-sharp delivery. It’s fun, confident, and a near-flawless debut.
Missy Elliott is truly Supa Dupa Fly. Great beats and rhymes.
This is so funky and cool
really interesting album, ahead of its time
Bangers, great beats and takes me back
Great album with a lot of different vibes across. Very jazzy hip-hop.
More R&B inflected than I expected, and slower in pace than the later hits she became known for. 'The Rain' remains a monster ear worm, with 'Sock It 2 Me' and 'Pass da Blunt' as solid also-rans. The rest is a mix of decent if sometimes dated R&B (especially that Ginuwine track), and almost great hip hop. I woul dhave added 'I'm Talkin' and 'Getaway to playlists given the great backing beats and verses...but the choruses fell down flat for both tracks. Overall, probably a high 3, low 4 kind of situation - but grading up because it's Missy Elliott for fuck's sake.
Sock It 2 Me The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly) Beep Me 911
Dope
Bit of a story here: I am a fan of Blues Traveler (stay me with here, there is a point). I funded through PledgeMusic one of their albums, where they collaborated with a number of artists. Ultimately it was Blues Traveler backing up a number of artists, and NOT a Blues Traveler album. So when I see a lot of songs on an album that says "Featuring", it makers me pause a little. I want to hear the artist whose name is on the title, not a bunch of other people. Saying that, I did like the album. It has a nice groove to it. Even the interlude was pretty good. The "thank you" at the end was kind of odd. You culd have put the thank you on the album itself. I could have done without the intro and outro, but that's probably just me. Pass da Blunt was... weird. Just because it is an obvious homage to "Pass The Dutchie". It was definitely fun to listen to. Give it like a 3.75, round up to 4. Top tracks: "Hit'Em wit da Hee," "Sock It 2 Me," "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)", "Friendly Skies," "Best Friends"
First time listen. Great stuff. Sounds modern but retains the mid 90s feel hard. Really enjoyed this. A lot more than I thought I would.
82% Best: Hit 'Em wit da Hee; The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly); Pass da Blunt; Don't Be Comin' (In My Face) Must-Hear? Sure
Un clásico de rap. Buenas featurings
Holds up so well 25+ years later. Beats are incredible, great flows and vibe, and undoubtedly influential in hip-hop. Will be coming back to this for sure.
Something that interests me in where she's going, although a little heavy on collabs.
This was fantastic and I knew it would be. Missy plus Timbaland. Just so inventive and fun. And full of bangers.
Actually really good. Sounds fresh, features several very impressive cameos, no distracting skits, clearly talented rappers and producers feature, and Timbaland keeps the "sex noises" to a minimum.
Admittedly I was worried when I saw Missy pop up this Morning but that’s because I’m an idiot and confused her with Queen Latifa. Supa Dupa Fly was just that, it was Supa Fly. It was an odd album at times but Timbaland’s Production and Missy’s effortlessly cool vibes are what make this album so infectious. The Rain struck me as a really chill track, Pass Da Blunt was the only song I was previously familiar with and late in the album, Izzy Izzy Ahh was a song that stood out with quirky delivery and good energy. Missy Elliot deserves a ton of credit for being a pioneer to the female rap game. Fun album. 4 stars
supa dupa awesome
Almost a five star album. The song “Izzy Izzy Ahh” prevents it from getting that extra star. Perfect album aside from that awful song.
this thing is great hooks and fun production all the way down
Missy is an icon and a great rapper. This album, her debut, maybe doesn't show off everything she's capable of in her rap skills. But as a hip hop album in general? Listening to it, you can totally hear the origins of how the game would change. Timbaland's production in particular is standout work, but Missy is no slouch whatsoever. Her vocals are deep and when she goes off, she shows just how good she can be. Is it my favorite showcase of Missy's? Maybe not, but it's still absolutely worth a full listen.
Okay, the album is really silly, but Timberland's production is masterful. Hip-Hop and R&B crossover is usually very bad, but this somehow works well.
Wow this sounds a lot like college, even though I never consciously sought it out.
8/10
Wonderfully self-assured debut. Produced by Timbaland and with Busta Rhymes bookending the guests, this is a perfect, full-fat hip hop.
This was nice to have in the background playing - not necessarily my type of hip hop however.
Surprisingly fun album -- would warrant a closer listen
Favorite: Sock It 2 Me Least Favorite: Why You Hurt Me
I loved this album! All the songs were so good in my opinion. I was vibing to the whole thing. It was groovy, catchy, and fun to listen through. I'd give this one a 4.5 if I could, but I'll round down because I know there are better albums out there.
Liked it more than I thought was going to, kind of anticipated it’s inclusion on historical context, female progression in rap with rnb tones and there is that cd age run time, but as said pleasantly surprised how much enjoyed it. Not going to claim any knowledge about the album but Happily listen again 4 Star
Missy Elliott is someone I probably heard of before when I was a kid, listening to mainstream music with my sisters in the early 2000s and catching songs like "Work It" and "Get Ur Freak On". I hadn't gotten into her until this year with her performance at Coachella, which included the first two singles from her debut, Supa Dupa Fly. After listening, I consider this a respectable first record. Missy commanded the mic on this album, alternating between smooth R&B singing and laid-back chill rapping over the high-end dancehall-inspired production from Timbaland. The ease with which she expresses her womanhood, in both the demand to be respected and the desire for intimacy with her partners, is astounding over these phat breakbeats with a few notable compositions built off samples. Not to mention, the number of guest appearances that bolster this record with their respective talents to make this feel like a joint effort, including Lil' Kim's opening verse on "Hit Em wit da Hee", Da Brat's closing rap on "Sock It 2 Me", and Aaliyah's sultry delivery opposite Missy on "Best Friends". My only complaint with this debut is that it's rather long. This included multiple interlude tracks, including intro and outro tracks from Busta Rhymes, who serves as a hype man for this record, but doesn't feel necessary to the overall experience. Also, the self-gratification on Missy's part became a bit egregious to me towards the end, such as the lyrics of "I'm Talkin'" coming off as no more than "I'm great" and "look how well I rap". Still, I overall enjoyed Supa Dupa Fly as the first big step for Missy Elliott, becoming a major influence for many female rappers to come.
A very solid debut. This album helped shape the modern R&B sound. 3,5*
Is Missy Elliot my favorite female rapper of all time? Yes. Is this her best album? No. Still damn good tho
Great album, fantastic production. This is classic late 90's hip-hop perfection.
Game changer, and not bad. Just not the best of her albums.
A very refreshing album for the 90s rap scene. Feels very modern and classic all the same.
You people are overreacting this was fly asf
Favorites: Hit 'Em wit da Hee, Sock It 2 Me, The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly), Pass Da Blunt, Friendly Skies, Best Friends Supa Dupa Fly is awesome. Some of Timbaland's best beats paired with Missy, who is striking out on her own in her debut record and sounds fantastic alongside some of rap and R&B's best at the time. The record boasts some incredible features, especially from Da Brat, Timbaland himself, Ginuwine, and Aaliyah, with the album's intro/outro from Busta Rhymes adding texture and elevating Missy to the level of all of her peers and then some. What a debut!
>The Beatles
Well aren’t we just on a roll through our 90’s albums lately. Supa Dupa Fly is a smooth, forward-thinking project that sets itself out from its contemporaries. The introduction by Busta Rhymes is so effective in making it seem like he’s rolling out the red carpet for Missy Elliot. I can’t think of many songs that are as nocturnal and as chill as “The Rain”. The stoner anthems dont stop there; “Pass da Blunt” isn’t as easy on the ears, but has a just as anthemic chorus. I’d also like to highlight this song as it sounds like a grand coming out party for Timbaland. Most people who are millennial-aged or younger are all too familiar with that pseudo-beat-boxing mouthy production style at the end of this song. “Best Friends” maybe meanders a bit too much for my ears, but thats about the worst thing that happens at any point on this record, which is so impressive given its hour run time. I feel like anyone that has a lot to pick apart about Supa Dupa Fly probably has some biases to get over. Missy Elliot facilitates an atmosphere that made me feel like she was pulling punches — not shorting the listener, just letting the stories she tells or bars she delivers all ride out over incredible production.
With the exception of the slightly annoying Busta Rhymes intro, there is little to fault on this album. It’s smooth, it vibes, and is of its time in the best way. Made me want to drop back in to ‘97.
This was such a pleasant surprise.
Una delle donne rapper forti + uno dei producer goat timbaland= classic
Bella scoperta, tipo Lauryn Hill ma ancora più chill
Good but not my favorite Missy album
Before starting this album journey, I’d never have expected to have become a fan of Missy Elliot as it was simply never really my scene. However, this is the second album of hers that I’ve heard, and I found myself really enjoying it. It certainly has a lot of rap tropes that I don’t tend to like, such as overt sexualism and bragging about how great oneself may be, and yet I still found myself having a good time here. For whatever reason, the things that annoy me with other artists don’t annoy me here.
First listen and it sounds extremely fresh - it doesn't sound like an album from 90s. Timbaland's production is incredible throughout and combined with Elliott's diversity of flows every song has at least one transition or moment that is a complete and welcome surprise. Although I'm not rating albums based on historical influence - I can't believe how much hip-hop owes to this album.
Great Beats
Another long ass album, but I enjoyed it. Wasn’t too soaked in 90s hip-hop-isms which was nice. Not really a huge Missy Elliott fan but I’m pretty sure she’s popular. Excited to hear more of her
I like the timbaland beep boops
Solid album but it goes too long
Great in places
4.2 absolute banger man
Honestly this was a really fun album. Far from perfect, but it was just so playful and uplifting. Definitely one I will be returning to at some point.
Monumental.
3.7
runs a bit long, but it was nice to hear an entire Missy album I'd never listened to before. TONS of featured artists, Sock it 2 Me, Friendly Skies and Best Friends probably being my favorites, great vocals and beats, solid R&B.
Funky, soulful R&B/hip hop. Too long as are most albums I’m realizing. But Missy and Timbaland are an untouchable team and Missy has a great singing voice. Plus it’s always nice to hear Busta talk his shit!
could i write poetry to this? n
I generally dislike interludes/skits on albums, but Busta Rhymes get an almost blanket pass. Whether it's on someone else's record or his own, he can pull it off. Without Timbaland's production, this would have been a fine 90's Hip-Hop/R & B album. He puts it over the top with a vibe that holds up today.
For a classic hip hop album, there isn't as much rapping as I remember. Anyway, I liked this a lot. Timbaland was unstoppable at this point as a producer.
Soild album! Excited to listen to it again.
This was soulful 90s rap. Great use of sampling without it being overused. I thoroughly enjoyed this.
Missy Elliott's impact on hip hop and rnb can not be understated. This album doesn't have my favorite songs of hers on it, but its still a solid album. Sock It 2 Me, They Don't Wanna Fuck Wit Me, Don't Be Comin, Why You Hurt Me, I'm Talking, and Getaway are all fun. The only problem is that it's just way too long. Knock off a few of the weaker songs, and you'd have a certified 5 album. Best song: I'm Talking
I’m not really a hip hop fan so it’s hard to judge a lot of different albums, but Timbaland’s production, Missy’s raps, flows and tone and Busta’s guests are fantastic. The Rain is an all time classic.
I guess I'm a Missy Elliott fan. I rated the first album served, 2002's Under Construction, with a 5 (I gotta go back and listen to that again!). I'm at a 4-star here, and it might even be the Busta Rhymes and other cameos that detracted just a little? Lots to like on this, so don't want to focus on the detractions. Smooth vibe, I love that Missy sings and raps — she's got a lot going on.
Favorite rapper? Missy Misdemeanor Elliott!
Reveal reaction: This should be fun! OK, I was right, it was a lot of fun! I've never really been that interested in Missy Elliot, so this is the first time I've heard this entire album. On one hand, it's a capsule to a time in hip hop where Timbaland was EVERYWHERE, and on the other hand, it's really unique in a way that I never realized. Off the top of my head, I can only point to Lauren Hill as an example of an artist whose album is as equal parts singing and rapping - and equally comfortable with each. This album isn't as good as the timeless Miseducation of Lauren Hill, but it definitely deserves the love it gets. Great album that sounds of its time, but not anachronistic.
Gave this one a pass at the time because it seemed so corny and glitzy, but it turns out to be much more enjoyable than I expected! Timbaland sounds much less gimmicky in retrospect. I guess stuff is just a bit flat these days, so older material stands out for me in a way it didn’t before. And Missy has nice flow!
Missy Elliott yup yup
I tend to go into hip hop reviews ready to rip on their lazy mumbles and their Auto-Tune crutch. Certainly not so with Supa Dupa. The production is top tier, the various vocal collabs are striking, and following the track list feels like traversing a little journey. There's just a positive, powerful, heart-felt tone to the whole package, which was uplifting. This is one of those records I went into expecting to hate, but it won me over instead.
For the first 25 minutes, I could not for the life of me understand why I have not listened to this every day for the last twenty years. Then after the first 25 minutes, I understood exactly why. The latter songs aren’t filler, not exactly. But they don’t hold a candle to the orgasmic pleasure of the first half of the album. (Side A? Could this be The Chronic redux? No idea, I got this on CD.) All that said. It is a very good album.
good production
It’s alright. Low 4
Fun with all of the different artists!
I actually have really like this. Never heard any of these songs. I have heard the name plenty but don't know any of her songs. But this has had good energy the whole way through. Imma give this one a 4. oh looking at her top songs I definitely know all those. I love Work It!
Missy > Nicki
For all intents and purposes, this is more of a Timbaland album than a Missy Elliot joint. Other than Phil Spector, I can’t think of a producer who leaves their imprint quite as distinctive as Timbaland. Maybe Metro Boomin is as close as we’re going to get to a modern example, but I still don’t find his work as eponymous as Timbaland’s beats. At the very least this album should have co-credits. With that said, Supa Dupa Fly is only a couple years out from Timbaland’s popularity prime when Aaliyah would be running up the charts. And to her defense, Missy is both creatively and publicly allegiant to Timbaland, who she vocally credits whenever it makes sense to do so. 4/5
Timbaland staking a claim
Nostalgia!
Decent album. Not Missys best, but still a solid, decent album. 4/5
Under the wing of still-new producer Timbaland, Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott would debut with a bonafide classic single The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly). That success would make the album's title a no-brainer, but that came with a whole set of challenges. Entering into the world of hip-hop as a woman required taking an R&B edge, but Elliott was more than capable of making it work for both sounds. She was able to stand out on her own two feet, a rapper with a soulful edge and the attitude to assert herself in a male-dominated field. Her flow is matched with Timbaland's cutting-edge beats that gives each track enough room to breathe. Stunning debut album.
Very entertaining record. Missy shines in her debut album, but Timbaland kind of steals the show for me. The production is absolutely wild. Worth hearing for the L/R panning alone.
Alltid bra när man sjunger om knark )
Quite sweet actually
Even better than the last Missy album I got, which I also quite enjoyed! Thank you MissDemeanor for some great tunes on what ended up being a very difficult Election Day!
Incredibly sexy music. Don't know a single word of the lyrics but the beats were almost hypnotic; I was completely locked in during the entire hour. The lyrics sounded nice too but I listened to them as another instrument in the track rather than a singer saying things. Almost a 5, all things considered
- A smooth mix of R&B, hip hop, and rap. It is impossible not to get entranced by Elliott's vocals or hyped by her bars to some degree. - Solid overall, but I do feel Timbaland doing a lot here...I am not sure how much some of these would stand out without his influence. Same for a lot of the accompanying artists (though the amount of female representation is awesome). - "Sock It 2 Me" and "Beep Me 911" are my faves. - Note: Thought this was 2002's "Under Construction." So I listened to that entire album first...and it better be on here, because that was 5/5 fire.
Strong flow, production is solid. Not my favorite of Missy, but nothing here to whine about.
Good ofc, but not Missy's best
Sentimental enjoyment.
This was Supa Dupa Fly.
Love Missy. Love Timbaland. Love Aaliyah. Love this era of avant-garde freak hip-hop production so much. It's a little clunky and it's not Timbaland's best production work, but it's weird as fuck and defined the sound of an entire decade of pop music that left a huge imprint on me, so it was a pleasure to listen to. Twice!
Gotta love Missy !!!! Especially when joined by Timberland & Lil'Kim ;D
I liked this album! Really liked the can't stand the rain sample and sock it 2 me. Music makes you want to get down and feel like beats pass through you.
Wow more hip-hop! This is peak timbaland production, and missy Elliott just oozes cool all throughout. Why couldn't I find a torrent for this album! Really fantastic features and bars Listening: in the sun waiting for the bus Favourite track: the rain
love her style of rapping and i always love timbalands production favorite: pass da blunt
3.5/5 stars
Great album. I like her collaboration with Timbaland on this. It was a trip back in time to just solid, fun, hip hop albums.
Was a good vibe driving back home in rainy weather. Very chill. It was lengthier than anticipated but we enjoyed this one.
I love this album, it’s such a confident debut with a strong voice and smooth production! And yet, I think I like her next two albums even more! She’s iconic and had an amazing run right out of the gate
So cool, consistent and confident! So fly!
She sampled/covered that “pass the dutchy” song.
Very strong start but overstays it's welcome. Some real classics
Great album. Like any American growing up in the late 90s/early 00s, Missy Elliott was a big name with a lot of hit songs. I have never dug into early discography or any deep tracks outside of the radio play or MTV. This album clearly influenced a lot of the popular hip hop of that ten-year period with Timbaland's smooth and eclectic production. Missy's rapping and singing is solid and varied, which makes for an interesting listen. The tone of this album feels fresh with a lot of space for the songs, and the vibes/content are not one-note like a lot of the rap before and after this. ****
The beats are sweet and have withstood the test of time, unlike a lot of other 90s beats. Missy's voice has nice tone and excellent flow. Loved the rhyme "cheaper reefer" (cheepa reefa, technically), and "Izzy Izzy Ahh" seems to cleverly nod to ODB's "Shimmy Shimmy Ya," but too much gratuitous cursing, N bombs and vapid rhymes overall for 5 stars.
I was really looking forward to listening to this--I knew she was a pioneering rapper in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame--and I definitely enjoyed it. Wasn't quite to my taste due to the language and that's okay. Nice mellow beats and I loved all the collaborations. Standouts for me were "Rain" and "Sock it 2 Me"
Yes!
Timbaland's production on Hit 'Em wit da Hee is sick. I really like how it plays in the more RnB tracks, see Best Friends.
Good
Lovely introduction into the Missy world.
"Super Dupa Fly" is the debut atudio album by American rapper Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott. The music on the album has elements of hip hop, dance, R&B, electronic music and soul. It was recorded and produced solely by Timbaland and features guest appearances by Busta Rhymes, Ginuwine, 702, Magoo, Da Brat, Lil' Kim and Aaliyah. The album received critical acclaim for Timbaland's futuristic production and Elliott's performances and persona. Commercially, it hit #3 in the US and #124 in the UK. Busta Rhymes gets the album going with his introduction of Missy Elliott in "Busta's Intro." It's a warning that an historical event is about to take place. "Hit Em Wit Da Hee" has a "loopy" R&B feel reminding me of NWA. There's lasers and keyboards. Sampling Suga and Björk. Elliott's rapping and singing. Great layering of music and vocals by Timbaland (throughout this album). Lil' Kim contributes. "Sock It 2 Me" featuring Da Brat is more in the R&B/pop category than hip hop. Great use of the Delfonics "Ready or Not Here I Come" in the melody. Speaking of great sampling, "The Rain (Super Dupa Fly)" uses vocals samples from Ann Peoples' "I Can't Stand the Rain." This is a little more funky and a little slower. "Beep Me 911" features 702 and Magoo. A very interesting beat. The background singers are creating a rhythm by themselves. Multple singing vocals. She's telling her lover, that if he's going to leave her, at least tell her. No need to go into the meaning of "Pass Da Blunt." There's great use of Musical Youth's "Pass the Dutchie" as Elliott sings the vocals like the Musical Youth. There's lots of really good things to like about this album. Great use of samples in the melody, background and vocals. Superb production by Timbaland with the layering of music and the vocals, the sampling itself, the melodies and the rhythms. Lots going on in each song. Elliott is also impressive with her confident singing and rapping. I will say that the album is top heavy with most of the good songs in the first half; some of this album could have been trimmed...oh, the CD era strikes again.
This is an arresting debut
Classic from day one
So good. Still sounds futuristic, but it's a lot quieter than I thought it would be.
enjoyed this album more than i thought i would some fire ass features shoutout busta rhymes 4.3/5
3.5/5
saved for future listening! loved
This album takes me back! I have many of the songs already downloaded on Spotify and I forgot about some of the other collaborations (namely, Aaliyah). Missy is a great artist and now I want to listen to her other albums.
So good. If you weren't alive at this time it might be hard to understand how foundational this one has been for the last 2 decades..... 4.5
One of the best rappers of the 90s-2000s. She's fun, she's clever, she's a badass. What's not to love?
Generell nicht mein Ding, hab dafür aber oft mitgenickt. Insgesamt Groovige, lockere Mucke. 3.5
This was pretty fun.
Awesome album. I feel like Missy does and doesn’t get the respect she deserves. I think people know how good and influential she is and I don’t hear her music enough. Certainly not as much as I hear some of her contemporaries. I’m glad I listened to this.
Wat kon die Timbaland een hitjes produceren zeg Nog nooit gecheckt, maar echt vetter dan verwacht nog Je moet wel even langs dat foute 90's/00's randje kijken though
Leuk album, goeie Timbaland beats, nooit geluisterd. Blij dat ik gleuisterd hebt
I like, lekker hoor
Fun fun music. Iconic timbaland collab
Solid album with a lot of catchy tracks and interesting features.
Timbaland has a sound for sure. But this album is super fun and Missy is pretty talented.
Wonderfully assertive and soulful with rich production. I appreciate hearing Missy collaborate with so many great women artists. Maybe a couple of weak tracks, but overall pretty brilliant. Fave Songs: Sock It 2 Me, Friendly Skies, Best Friends, The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly), They Don't Wanna Fuck wit Me, Beep Me 911, Izzy Izzy Ahh
Cool
Classic
It's pretty hard to disentangle the greatness of Missy Elliott as a rapper from the greatness of Timbaland as a producer. Luckily, we don't have to. This album is great. All the beats are on point, with lots of super-danceable stuff. Missy brings life to every song 4/5
I had my reserves when I saw I had to listen to this album. Luckily, it went better than expected. The first 10 - 12 songs are enjoyable. Great set of guests, good vibes, Missy dropping lines with style. However, it is too long. I don't know if she needed 17 songs to communicate all her ideas. Maybe 13 were enough? Well, who knows, I am not Timbaland.
Misdemeanor!!
Great beats, love Missy. Some songs were just OK though. Still - fabulous artist. The Rain is a super good song though.
She's so much more than just a rapper. Great voice, very good songs, even beyond the ones I already knew (The Rain, Sock it To me). Great featured guests that added to her songs, didn't take away. Well produced. I don't know that I would ever put it on, I just know I wouldn't run Missy Elliott off.
Great album!
Missy has good flow but both of her albums on this list, which I've had served to me in quick succession, leave me a bit cold. I saved a few tracks, but as albums they don't really seem to land as something more than the sum of its parts. That said, I liked the production on this and I think both albums are 3.5s for me so I'm rounding this up to 4.
Another first ever listen. Felt like second half was stronger than first. Really good though.
‘Supa Dupa Fly’ has a strong rnb flavour to it, which was a bit unexpected, but welcome. Timabland’s beats are solid, and Missy is a competent rapper. Together they complement each other nicely and are quite the dynamic duo, making for an understated but satisfying record.
Not an album I would normally listen to but it’s really good. Production is superb
3.5 enjoyed it! definitely more r&b than i was expecting, but missy and timbaland make a great duo
Overall, a well done collaboration. At its height this album features well written lyrics and plays with syncopation and other rhythms while staying melodically enjoyable. On the other hand, 50% of the album is repetitive and uninteresting, and could be cut without significantly impacting the whole
This would be a 5 if they cut a few songs. Common 90’s using every minute of space on a CD.
Even though Nicki Minaj has the "Queen of Rap" status, Missy Elliott paved the way before. Nicki paved the way for all current rappers, and Elliot paved the way for her. Compared to her contemporary artists, I like her way more than Lil Kim. Great album, very important and quite enjoyable. Close to a 3 for the weak ending. Those solo tracks were not the best. Expected Marc rating: 3
Missy is the goat, what more is there to say? Didn't realize she had so many features across her albums though
Liked the music, didn’t like the lead vocals or the lyrics.
One of the best female rappers! Great album.
Missy is a hell of rapper, Timbaland is a hell of a producer. RIP Magoo & Aaliyah
Beep Me 911 transported me back to 8th grade. Missy, Aaliyah, Timbaland mastered the Rap/R&B combination. Still great.
Reminds me of riding in my red Pontiac Gran Prix blasting my CD player, thinking I was cool. This album still bops.
Flows fabulously which is why it's fly. Strong statement though it feels overdone at time – starting with the boasts – which is of course the occupational hazard within hip-hop.
Ha I was just banging on about how great 1997 was, only yesterday. And here comes another one. Two in a row. More R'n'B than hip hop really, but it definitely hops. I maybe don't love every track, but they're all enjoyable. A bit overlong as an album though. Probably sags a little in the middle but it starts and ends STRONG.
Well she's terrific. Hee hee haa haa, no notes. I don't know how much of what I like of what Timbaland is doing in some of these, structurally, though he gets to use some cool effects. From my limited view, it feels like this is before rap entered its operatic Kanye era. Producers still happy to set up a groove and fade it out at the end. In this case, I feel he relies too heavily on the source sample to make a chorus happen.
Svo kúl plata að ég svitna!
I asked for the cd of "Under Construction" for Christmas in 2002- I probably know every word to that album still. I'm less familiar with this one, I haven't listened to all of it outside of "The Rain" in a long time. I'm looking forward to listening to this today! Also, Missy in general is one of the hip-hop/R&B songwriting and production GOATs of the '90s/2000s. She changed the course of popular music and this album is what launched her and Timbaland into the stratosphere after years of writing and producing and featuring on hits for others. And, after a few rounds today I can say this album is great and it's going back in my rotation STAT. Super chill, futuristic, R&B/hip hop vibes - Missy sings as much or more than raps on this album, and even her bars are so musical. The biggest rap moments actually come from Lil Kim and Da Brat, both with killer features. You can tell she and Timb and their crew had a blast making this album. Some of Timbs coolest beats are in here, and he has production on every song. The first four songs were the singles and are all massive, Missy knows her way around a hook and has a long history of memorable/quotable lines. I also really enjoyed the duet with Ginuwine - "Friendly Skies" - the beat on that track is like the sweet friend of Pony. The duet with Aliyah is also great. And I mean, pass the blunt! I love how Missy does the spoken thank yous, but I'll admit that Busta Rhymes' intro and outro didn't add much for me. If you are familiar with '90s rap you can look at a list of other rap albums that came out in '97, the avant-pop leanings of this album will really stick out. She broke ground and built the foundation here.
Very fly, as it happens
Good production values
Not my favourite hip hop record. Good though.
The album had good beats, got a little repetitive at the middle and end, but overall it was good hip-hop. I loved the vocals of Missy Elliot, the rap was very good and I loved the parts where she sang. I liked it, it's not a 5, but I liked it.
Strongly influential at the time, loved the production and smooth raps on top
4 There's a reason why Missy Elliott is considered the Queen of Hip Hop and R&B, and this album is a great start as to why. Despite a few tracks are not as fantastic as others, this was an incredible debut with intensely captivating singing and rapping abilities through and through.
