Album Summary
Mothership Connection is the fourth album by American funk band Parliament, released on December 15, 1975 on Casablanca Records. This concept album is often rated among the best Parliament-Funkadelic releases, and was the first to feature horn players Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley, who had previously backed James Brown in the J.B.'s. such an incredibly creative and enjoyable album, and to think i didn't much care for it when i first listened about half a year ago (as of writing) .. definitely a classic funk masterpiece. i have no criticisms for this record at all except that it can be a very small bit too repetitive at times, but even that element can result in some exceptional payoffs, like in the first track.
Get your funk out tonite. This one is groovin n jamming with other worldly sounds.
3.5* Can appreciate how seminal this is! I think it's just hard to rate much higher knowing that albums like "Maggot Brain" exists within the same world.
Funky
The Brooks par exemple. Très Sly & Family Stone aussi. On sent l'époque dans leur style. Un gros bop!
Fik virkeligt snakket det op over for Reimer.
Wha
GOSTEI, COM CERTEZA VOU REVISITAR
George Clinton’s ticks so many boxes, the man’s a genius.
From the delightfully demented mind of George Clinton. If this doesn’t make you wanna shake it, you better check for a pulse. Good smart dumb fun. Great album cover also.
Fav song : Handcuffs
Not normally for me but they caught me in a groovy mood. And Give Up The Funk is a classic.
Ok
Absolutely fantastic. Groovy as fuck from the first note to the last. This is funk with personality, humor, and serious weight behind the rhythm. The whole album moves like a living thing. Bass lines pull hard, the drums stay locked and elastic, and the horns and vocals cut through with real attitude. Nothing feels stiff or overthought. It just hits and keeps hitting. There is a playful, larger-than-life quality running through the record, but the groove never gets sacrificed for the concept. The music stays physical and immediate. The production is thick and clear at the same time. Every part has space while the low end still feels massive. It captures the band in full flight without cleaning the life out of the performances. Mothership Connection is pure pleasure. One of the strongest and most irresistible funk albums ever made. Put it on and it does the rest.
7 - GOOD
P-Funk is secretly a social experiment where George Clinton sees how many times he can say "Funk" without it getting annoying to the audience. Seriously, if you took a shot of your nearest non-alcoholic whatever-the-hell every time they said "Funk" in this album, you'd be 6² feet under by the end of the first song. There are a few good songs throughout, but my brain was pretty numb by the end of it and all of the songs seriously sounded similar by the signoff song, and I surely squandered my stupid synonym Synonymicon to scribe this sentence. Stuff similar to this is how semantic satiation feels, much like the how word "funk" feels to me now.
Yeah we all knew that song was coming Give Up the Funk is far and away the best thing about this album; unbelievably catchy and perhaps the most used funk song of all time for a reason. Vocals are good, and from an instrumental perspective there’s really nothing to be desired. The themings also particularly great on this one, the whole space thing works out really well here. I feel like a lot of the runtime is kinda empty on this one unfortunately. I know they’re building up that atmosphere but none of these songs really feel like they’re supposed to be songs if that makes sense lol. I think with a couple of other standalone tracks this would be a much better album I like the other P Funk album we had a lot better, I think the heavier rock influence made it feel like a more complete project. Don’t get me wrong though, will still absolutely blast Give Up the Funk, but in single form rather than as a part of an album
Presenting your funk as so powerful it's widespread across the galaxy is one of the most compelling arguments I heard from an album.
A funking masterpiece
Give Up the Funk is a certified classic banger. The others, I didn’t care for.
Funky
Ew
very fun, last 3 tracks are the best
Was not expecting the cool jazzy interlude on the opener. Very nice. The inclusion of the horns and the unconventional sound/instrument effects really does elevate the album. Very interesting listen. Solid 4. Mighta' been a 5 but Handcuffs was just too fucked up for me. It benefits from being self aware but ... still too fucked up, thx. Fun album, otherwise. Very creative.
Very cool
Nice album. Funky and funny
Adding this album to the cooking playlist IMMEDIATELY
Funk, a little less energetic than I'd hoped
If you didn’t know how to dance, you do now.
Ummm what a start 😭 it’s definitely a vibe
Even I felt cool for 40 glorious minutes listening to this album. It’s so evocative, you can see the music, you feel like you are there. It’s influence is enormous (and enormous may undersell it).
I’ve heard plenty of this before, but I never listened to it in its entirety. I’m delighted by the conceptual framework of an alien broadcast. I felt the funk take me over. It worked. I love that I listened to The Chronic before this. So much of this is in there.
Not my usual style, but it met me on the right day
funky
funky euh
Really enjoyed this. Sooo funky. Equally groovy.
Funkrific. Good to listen to while cooking or something like that. 4.5
Hassuttelua on just sen ettei mee ihan läpäksi vaan pysyy oikeinkin vakavastiotettavana. Also rakastan tän levynkannen retrofuturistista meininkiän
Some real classic funk
Not for me
I feel violated. 10/10.
I’m not a fan of parliament
3.5
Top groovy for my taste...
Het blijft funk…
It's alright. I haven't listened to much funk but I'm pretty sure this is not the best Parliament album.
Quite possibly the funkiest album ever recorded. The zenith of interplanetary funksmanship. I'd call it a manifesto but it's much too transcendent for such mundane terrestrial matters.
Buen ritmo, disco Funk
Funky Fun Friday Jams! This album is nearly perfect. Great!
BEWARE THE FUNK
I think they might want the funk
3.5
It’s a bunch of a novelty songs with great music.
Listen carefully, children. This album contains the scritchy-scratchings of hip-hop, just trying to crack open that egg and having the best time doing it. If you can't move to this then you better take yourself home and tuck yourself in.
EPETACULA
Just amazed at how much these guys continue to shape our idea of what's cool.
Incredible joint. Though I suppose that it didn't grab me as much as some of the more impassioned reviews on this website, I loved it. To speak plainly, the funk was IN me, controlling the way I moved, thought, and spoke. In a more analytical note, Parliament is obviously one of the most consequential funk acts in the history of the genre, being led by the man himself, George Clinton, who also headed the Parliament sister project, Funkadelic. Every single song here brings some sort of incredible, undeniable groove that WILL get stuck in your head for around a week. It's impossible not to adore the group vocals of "IF YOU HEEEAR ANY NOISE, IT'S JUST ME AND THE BOYS," or "SWING DOWN, SWEET CHARIOT STOP, AND LET ME RIDE," "GIVE UP THE FUNK!!," "I WANT MY FUNK UNCUT!," I could go on. After having only heard this album for one day, I could tell you the general grooves and vibes coming out of each song. I truly love this album. I will be listening a lot. 9.7/10 DOES IT BELONG ON THE LIST: YESSSSSSSS REASON: Everyone needs a bit of the funk, and who better to get it from than the masters of it?
Fantastisk funk!
Fan vad funky. Nosar på fyra.
Solid groovy piece of music
Funk isn’t really me genre but felt like the musicianship was good. Music was fun and catchy
A lot of funky fun.
This one funked me all the way up
Incredibly funky afrofuturism
Vibes of proportions unknown before
It's funk. Like that's all it is, you imagine a funk song? This is what it sounds like
some absolute bangers on here - some of the songs are overly long though
Gets a bit silly in places, but probably defining p funk album
Wird but I enjoyed this
This is unusual and funky. I like it
Todays pick presents me one of P Funks main defining records. Probably the number one from the Parliament side. I don't know if any album on earth delivers as much funk as the mothership I certainly don't know any. The music is irresistibly uplifting there is no escape and it leaves you in a good mood every time. A lot of highclass musicians work together under the genius lead of George Clinton (as in every other P Funk record). The basslines are straight out of funk space they are incredibly fun and catchy and build the perfect base for the Mothership Connection. Also great horns they really do this album good and take big part in why I like it. Two of the horn players came over from the JBs which means they played with James Brown as well as Bootsy Collins the bassplayer who also was a former musician with Mr Brown so you know they are more than just good at what they do. Too many musicians take part to give them all individual credits but they did a great job without exceptions. The whole mothership theme of the album opened a lot of doors especially for future live performances of the P Funk collective so it was influential for the collective as well as for funk, hip hop etc. on the music side. Very important and influential piece of music without a doubt and on the list for good reason. 4,0/5
I'm not a funk fan, but the album is tremendous fun. Every song is a party. Groovy jams.
Mega funky, mega cool, not entirely my kind of thing but really enjoyable listen. 3.5/5.
P-Funk forever
I already loved this, and I still do. Sure it's a bit goofy at times but it's somehow incredibly cool
Never heard of this before but the cover looks cool. Pretty fun album with a cool sound doubt i’ll come back to it though.
Without a doubt the greatest Funk album of all time. 50 years of spins under my belt, and it still whoops all kinds of ass. 100/5.
Could’ve been a five , but that handcuff song didn’t sit right with me.
Classic funk at its best!
Loved this. Nice change of pace.
didnt rlly concentrate on specific songs but funk is funk and i like funk very groovy
Amazing funk macfunkface!
Funky goodness.
It's funk. It's upbeat and slightly motivational.
Finally something good, was fun!
Funky!
never reaches the heights of the intro song but damn this album makes me smile
A lovely hunk of mid 70’s funk! 4
Best Track - "Give Up The Funk"
Some serious 70s funk.
Loved it
