К сожалению над Mothership Connection не работал мой любимый гитарист Eddie Hazel поскольку бро имел какие-то проблемы с законом на тот момент (распространенная история для него, увы) Меня внезапно осенило, что, всё таки слушали все эти ваши реперы старой школы и кем вдохновлялись, создавая всяческие NWA, Wu Tang Clan'ы и прочие Run'ы DMC. ОНИ СЛУШАЛИ ФАНК! в том числе, как минимум. Ну вы вслушайтесь только, вот эта вот разговорная часть на расслабонесе под какой-то качёвый, расслабленный грув, это же чисто прием который (я уверен) и по сей день используют реперы. И использовали и в 80-ые. Ну и на добивочку: буквально вторая же композиция используется Dr. Dre напрямую в качестве (по сути) семпла на его треке Let Me Ride! О как, да? А подпевка с "Give Up The Funk" используется на треке Снуп Дога с его дебютного альбома на треке "Who Am I (What's My Name)?". Приятно находить CONNECTIONS (нувыпонелида?!?!?17) когда так долго слушаешь самую разную музыку. Короче, альбом - шикардос. это 5. нет, это 10.

Just a set of slabs of juicy, feel-good funk. Parliament doesn't complicate things on this album - the songs are based around their funk grooves and don't have a ton of embellishments. At the same time, when the horns do come in, they're a treat. Many of the lyrics are about funkiness, and the album is at its most fun in the spoken word parts where Clinton is instructing you how to best let the funk overtake you. The straightforwardness does hurt the album in places, as there are no songs that really stand out and wow you, and I could go for a couple more songs where the funk is smooth and bouncy rather than big and striking. But the album is still a joy overall, and the many artists who have sampled it over the years surely agree.

a lot more people that i dont know on here than expected (ohhh george clintons band ofc) so ready to get funked up. a lot of this song is just him talking to the listener, so there isnt a lot to talk about. but i did enjoy the song like the last one, lot of talking, lot of grooving for a song with unfunky, theres a lot of funkiness going on idk. george clinton is doing a lot more singing on this cut and god his soulful voice is just unreal the synth lines on this song are next level. the bass too, the funk is just at 110% you gonna have to put hand cuffs on me if you wanna drag me away from george clintons majestic voice yeah bro ive made it pretty clear that i want the funk by now. probably the most iconic funk song of all time why are you farting in my ear man i thought we had a thing going sorry but i really didnt have all that much to say about each song. funk music isnt really something that can be described, its more something that has to be felt. and this album made me feel pretty good, so imma give it an 8

An interesting album that is both fairly chill and funky at the same time. Very weird, but I enjoyed it. The only problem is that it's very samey.

Overall Rating - 3.86/5 (7.71/10). Solid album. Very enjoyable. Didn't like the almost fart noises on the last track, though.

One of my favorite albums of all time. It's just so silly while at the same time knocking you upside the head with funk. Let me put on my sunglasses, so I can see.. It's like a parody of 70s music and I mean that in the best possible way. Also, album cover is fucking fantastic.

This is very 70's Funk. It was made in 1975, so that makes perfect sense. I was familiar with and liked a few of the songs, but Give Up the Funk is the star.

I can definitely see myself getting back to this album. Here we have their fourth album and probably the definitive funk statement of that year, following on from Sly Stone. It’s got some major ear worm hook lines, some needless noodling early on, but appearances from Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley out of James Brown’s band give Clinton and Co. an extra credibility. A really good album which no doubt Prince Rodgers Nelson took notice of…….

Album #266 Parliament: Mothership Connection More solid funking from George Clinton and co. Though I didn’t find this album to be too different from his works under the name Funkadelic, there were definitely some elements which made the album feel unique. I didn’t really care for the last track; it kind of just sounded like someone was farting into the mic for five minutes, but other than that, really good stuff. Best Songs: Unfunky UFO, P-Funk, Give Up The Funk Worst Song: Night Of The Thumpasaurus Peoples Score out of 10: 7.5

I really enjoyed this album.. funky in a way you rarely hear anymore.

I was initially wondering if I really needed the funk going into this record, but by the end of it, I decided I gotta have that funk. This record really is funky, psychedelic party music at its best. At first glance, this record might suggest that it is just silly party music made by a bunch of guys high on shrooms (which is partly is) but it is actually a surprisingly musically detailed and wonderfully creative experience. A super joyous record that really is just overall a groovy time.

George Clinton is the master of funk and his abilities are on full display

Oh, this rating makes me look like an asshole. I love George Clinton! I just don’t think this is one of his best. There’s a few Funkadelic records I’d take over this, and within the Parliament realm I prefer Funkentelechy, which grooves and meanders in more interesting ways. This is still a great record everyone should hear! I just think the group’s got better output elsewhere.

I didn’t super love it but I’m giving it 4 because there was a kid in my 6th grade class who renamed himself Starchild and everyone called him that for years including teachers. I wonder where he is now.

Nice slow style funk, very easy to listen and groove with. Standouts are mothership connection, Give Up The Funk and Night of the Thumpasaurus People.

4.5/5. Fun drinking game: Take a shot every time the word “funk” is said on a parliament or Funkadelic album. You’ll die. Jokes aside, Mothership Connection is among the best funk albums of all time, this thing is an absolute unstoppable groove machine whether that be the sticky bass/synths of “Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication” or the spoken words over the intro track “P-Funk.” One of those albums that’s impossible to not at least nod your head to.

So much fun! So 70s! But, erm, maybe too much talking? 3.5?

One hundred percent in the lane — funk average 4.17 in this project for good reason, and Mothership Connection is the record that built the lane. George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, and a rotating cast of musicians creating something that was equal parts music, philosophy, and cosmic spectacle, the whole enterprise held together by a groove philosophy so complete it became a worldview. Bootsy is ridiculous. The bass playing throughout — rubbery, melodic, simultaneously anchoring everything and pulling it in unexpected directions — is one of the great instrumental performances in recorded music and the engine that makes the whole mothership fly. Bernie Worrell's synthesizer work is the other essential element, genuinely pioneering in 1975, giving the record a sonic texture that nothing else of the era could match and that Prince, Outkast, and Kendrick Lamar all drew from directly whether they said so or not. "Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)" is one of the great funk singles ever recorded — a complete argument for what the genre can do at its highest expression, delivered with the kind of joyful conviction that makes resistance beside the point. The Afrofuturist mythology surrounding it — Black people as the original inhabitants of space, funk as the cosmic frequency connecting everything — gives the whole record an intellectual and spiritual framework that separates it from mere excellence. The Mothership has landed. A five that needed no deliberation.

I've got the funk

George Clinton has always struck me less as a conventional bandleader than as a political huckster in the old medicine-show tradition: part preacher, part carnival barker, part confidence man, arriving in town with a miraculous cure and enough theatre to persuade you to try it. Ken Kesey worked by a similar method. Reverend Billy Talen does now. The point is not simply to make an argument. You build a temporary alternative reality, invite people inside, and let them discover that the rules have changed. Mothership Connection may be the purest expression of that instinct I’ve heard. The first side is essentially a space opera crossed with a travelling revival meeting. “P-Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up)” doesn’t so much begin as tune us into a radio station that was already broadcasting. Clinton is cosmic DJ, preacher and patent-medicine salesman, and P-Funk is being offered as the cure for whatever ails you. By “Mothership Connection (Star Child)” we’ve stopped listening from outside and joined the procession. The wonderful appropriation of “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” makes the whole scheme explicit without ever laboriously explaining it: the chariot is now the Mothership, gospel salvation has become funk, and Star Child has us safely in his hands. Then “Unfunky UFO” performs one of the album’s cleverest reversals. The aliens haven’t travelled to Earth to bring their superior knowledge to the primitives. Their own world is dying of funklessness and they’ve come here because we have the answer. They want to learn how to funk so they can take it home and save the planet. This isn’t transcendence, exactly. Clinton isn’t telling us that salvation lies somewhere out there among the stars. The treasure is already here, embodied in Black music, rhythm, pleasure and communal movement, and it can be spread through the galaxy. All of which makes the record sound much more solemn than it is. Clinton’s great achievement is that he never hammers you over the head with any of it. If you have to analyse the proposition too hard, the proposition has failed. The grooves do the work. And good Lord, these grooves. Mothership Connection has an astonishing physical presence for a record from 1975. I had something like the experience I get imagining the first impact of Sgt. Pepper: not necessarily “these are better songs than anything anybody else is making”, but how the hell does the record sound like this? The bottom end is huge, rounded and elastic. Bernie Worrell’s keyboards squelch, burp and occasionally seem to be conducting experiments in interstellar flatulence. The percussion is exquisite. Bootsy Collins repeatedly demonstrates his virtuosity by showing what he doesn’t need to play. On “Handcuffs” in particular he plants himself in the pocket and simply refuses to leave. The band is tight as fuck and loose as all hell at the same time. The more Clinton strips the language down, the better the record often becomes. “Give the people what they want when they want it, and they want it all the time” barely develops as a lyric during “Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication”, but that’s precisely why it works. Repetition turns statement into slogan, slogan into chant, chant into ritual, until meaning gives way to physical participation. “Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)” does the same thing even more directly. That wonderful low chant of “tear the roof off the mother sucker” practically becomes another bass instrument. By “Night of the Thumpasorus Peoples”, language can dissolve almost completely into beautiful gibberish because the groove is capable of carrying everything itself. “Handcuffs” is the complication. I actually paused the album there, something I almost never do. The song is about possessiveness, jealousy and the need to be wanted, but it’s delivered from so comfortably inside the possessive man’s viewpoint that I couldn’t establish how much distance Clinton wanted us to have from him. Satire? Confession? Caricature? A deliberately ugly bit of male psychology? It knows enough about its narrator’s behaviour to make a straightforward endorsement seem unlikely, but never gives us the reassuring wink that would settle the matter. At first I thought it had broken the album. Then I remembered the physical LP. The world-building is really side one: transmission, procession, testimony, conversion. Side two is better treated as four discrete songs rather than a continuation of the space opera. And eventually “Handcuffs” began to look less like an inexplicable rupture and more like a grimy dose of Earthbound reality. If this record merely said “loosen up, surrender to the funk and everything will be fine”, it would be escapist utopianism. Instead we’re reminded that people remain jealous, needy, controlling, insecure and contradictory. The funk may free you, but sure as hell it don’t make you pure. I’m still not certain I’ve solved “Handcuffs”, and perhaps I’m not supposed to. Life is ambiguous, awkward and comfortable too. What I am certain about is the rest of it. This is one of the grooviest records I’ve ever heard: sumptuously produced, beautifully arranged, played by a rhythm section operating at a ridiculous level, and conceptually audacious without ever allowing the concept to get between you and the pleasure. I expected something closer to the abrasive, Lord-of-Misrule politics I had wanted from Maggot Brain. Instead Clinton offers a much sweeter pill. He doesn’t overthrow the existing world by shouting at it. He builds another one that looks much more fun to live in and waits for you to come aboard. I did.

First time actually listening to a full Parliament album (historically have been more of a Funkadelic guy), but it lives up to what I would come to expect.

Never heard before. Really not my thing but I tried. I can see why it would appeal. It was short, it was very, very funky. Every time a member of my family came in while I was listening to it they started dancing!

And in the Parliament vs. Funkadelic debate, I like this better than One Nation Under a Groove so far. Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker) is tremendous. Night Of the Thumpasorus Peoples is silly, but I like the groove.

This was truly a blast of an album. It felt great, it felt adventurous, and it was innovative and familiar simultaneously. After a serviceable first track, it bumps up big time and never lets up after that. It’s easy to see why these guys were sampled so heavily in hip-hop to come, and why they’re loved and revered as pioneers of funk. George sounds energetic and alive. The musicians were stop-on-a-dime tight and locked in, and the production was genuinely otherworldly. Absolutely fantastic.

Esse álbum me ganhou na primeira frase. Que voz é essa? Eu derreti ali mesmo. Durante boa parte da audição eu tive a sensação de estar dentro do estúdio acompanhando esses músicos gravando. Em outros momentos, era como se eu estivesse em um bar de jazz maravilhoso, mesmo sabendo que o álbum é funk. Cada integrante parece ter seu próprio momento de destaque, e isso deixa tudo muito vivo, como se eu estivesse assistindo à banda tocar bem na minha frente. Ouvi o álbum inteiro. Absolute cinema. Qualidade demais.

Well, it's funk. You either like it or you don't, but if you're looking for something beyond a funk type of fun, you're likely to be disappointed. It's all vibes with this type of music, I guess.

Back in the 80s I somehow got into George Clinton's Some of My Best Jokes Are Friends, very polished and funky though eccentric, not for everyone. I had listened to a bit of Parliament but it never really connected. Listening to this album straight through I was disappointed - the style was influential and still going strong but I hear too much going on, to a point that undercuts the sound as a whole. Particularly annoying 70s keyboards floating around and weakening the rhythm with random burbles. Some of the songs work but unfortunately I didn't enjoy it as an album. I'll say it's Mix of Good and Bad, 5/10.

This was a fun listen and with the obvious classic Give Up The Funk. I think it’s a good album and I don’t know enough about the history of funk to really say whether it should be considered a funk great but Parliament definitely should be. Decent and fun listen, head bobbing for 33/38 mins. Could not get on board with that last song though - killed off a good album for me.

He also addressed issues in music that I ponder still as I work through this 1089 list: I heard some funk with some Main Ingredients Like Doobie Brothers, Blue Magic, David Bowie It was cool, but can you imagine Doobie in your funk? 5 Boolean: True

Today I was feeling quite funky, and by funky I mean P-funky with Parliment's Mothership Connection. I was quite excited for this project as I do have quite the soft spot for Funk and Soul music, but I just wasn't super wowed by this project throughout the entire 38 minute runtime. The two opening tracks are really great long winded pieces from the band but everything after that felt not as fulfilling and rich in my personal opinion. Unfunky UFO and Night of the Thumpasorus Peoples were both the weakest points in the album which really bummed me out as they seemed to have a lot of charm but were a bit repetitive at times. This is far from a bad project and I see why some people consider it a Funk classic, but I am just not seeing it myself and that really bums me out.

I was really tired so I was going to have an afternoon nap, but I first decided to have a look at what I was listening to today. Reader, I did not have a nap.

Zesty. Perhaps a tad too zesty. This was a lot for a Wednesday morning. I am glad I listened, but would need to be in a very specific mood to listen again.

I kind of love the idea of funky aliens. I probably won’t ever return to this album, but the beats were infectious and it did make me smile.

Notes: - funk lyricism is not a thing. almost a contradiction in terms. be warned, interstellar voyagers. - that's not to say that the vocals aren't necessary and exciting, but it does mean that my favorite tracks are the ones with the least actual words. - for a group devoted to excess, this is remarkably restrained. hear me out - there's a dozen or more people with chops to spare, but they rarely if ever all play at once. there are plenty of quiet slow-burn parts. - love how the drums are mixed. super dry with the hihat way out front keeps it propulsive. - the extra percussion on "Supergroov...." is golden. finger cymbals! ratchet! woodblock! thrilling and somehow funny. - multiple keyboards! love how the electric piano and the synth play off each other. Verdict: If real life parties were like this, I would go to more of them. Tear the roof off, indeed. Listen Again? Most certainly. Next I've queued up "Maggot Brain".

This is a great listen. You feel like you're live with this crazy alien funk band. Super tight, sustains interest over long repeating sections. Production is also great. It's an amazing drum sound and the vocals are recorded from different distances giving depth

Enjoyed the vibe on this one but didn’t quite dig it overall as much as I was hoping to. I’m sure this is just me misunderstanding funk music but it seemed looser and more repetitive than I would have liked.

What a catchy, groovy, and fun album to get on Monday! My rating was right between a 3 and a 4 and leaning towards a 4 when "We Want the Funk" came on and it firmly cemented itself as a 4/5 for me. Couldn't have asked for a better way to start the week! Make my funk the P Funk and don't forget your sunglasses! 4/5

Probably the best album artwork so far. Way too much chatter/narration over the first few tracks that distract from otherwise good songs. Some songs get a little repetitive at times, but I think most funk fans see that as a feature rather than a flaw. A fun enough album to have on in the background more so than an intense listening session. Also, Thumpasorus sounds like there are just fart noises through half of it

Gorgeous P-funk album. The beats are phenomenal, and Maceo Parker's sax is out of this world. You know it's a classic when about half the album has been sampled to death by 80s and 90s West Coast rappers. My only gripe with this record (as often with George Clinton's work) is the unnecessary overabundance of speeches and narrative parts. It's amusing for a minute, but it kind of ruins the funky mood for me. Less talk, more music ! Other than that, it's just great fun. 7/10

Of the two sides of the collective, I definitely prefer Funkadelic’s heavier rock/funk over Parliament’s more straightforward, dance-oriented funk. That said, this is still a really fun listen. The grooves are infectious, even if the vocals are a bit too upfront for my taste.

So what I don't understand is why I've never heard this before??? Dude, hell yeah! This is why I'm doing this album list!!!! I was convinced to buy the vinyl before the first song even finished. Common knowledge has it that Parliament was the more accessible of George Clinton's grand projects of funk -- the other being the more experimental Funkadelic. But this seems a rather relative comparison in retrospect. This is still some far out shit. Right from the outset, we're given a track with long interludes allowing bass, trombone, piano to do their thing. Sometimes by themselves, often swirling into each other. (Introducing an album by way of a fictional radio station has become a recognizable [if not terribly common] trope. Is this where it started? It surely deserves to be.) "Unfunky UFO" is probably the song that pauses just enough for us to hear exactly what this album fully is and does. It's got more of a recognizable pattern that we can return to and integrate ourselves into. And it's infectious. It's frustratingly short, fading out just as we really find ourselves in the groove. "Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication" is another one that, at around the same length, slows down to let you hear yourself into it. Slinky and groovy. A kind of definition of what groove is. But it's "Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)" that really personifies the album. Little wonder that this most recognizable single became the first song many people think when they think of funk. On the humor. It's interesting that this album was contrasted with, say, the Ohio Players or the Commodores in Rolling Stone as not having the "seriousness" of its counterparts (though to be clear, it's a good thing in the original review). Because it seems to me that funk is thought of as first and foremost a fun genre. And it certainly is here. Yes, the vision of black astronauts meeting with aliens is both absurd and a serious challenge to the imagination. Absurd not because black people can't be astronauts, but because of the aliens. Yet at the time of recording, both were seen by the public as large as just that: absurd. Hence the Afrofuturist challenge. The silliness and the seriousness start to slide into each other's place. Throwing off your notions of possibility with humor.

Would give a 4.5 if we could do half stars. Dance music just isn’t my genre, but I have a soft spot for some funk and this is FUNK! Listened to it twice, awesome workout/driving music. Now I’m gonna have “Give up the Funk” stuck in my head all week. Not that mad about it.

It definitely has a groove that’s fun to get into. Though it’s the same groove on most of the songs. And most songs don’t have much going for them in lyrics, with only one song that’s catchy. I like the dude talking in the first song, but otherwise the song is very random. I’m not (yet?) into funk, I guess.

Super fly! Even though I barely ever listen to funk, I found this listened crisp and fresh despite its age. Cool to find out that dr dre used bits from star child. Awesome.

I wonder how many people, now, know where The Chronic came from

A really good upbeat, funky soul album. I listen to this straight through without referencing any of the track names, but I didn't feel as though I needed to. One track just rolled into the next into the next and cut up that grey upbeat, funky rolling bass line with a solid drums. I wouldn't say that this album did anything extraordinary, but it did the regular things really well. Not an outstanding five-star album but definitely a good four-star.

Oh man - P-Funk is second only to the Meters for funk, saw this album and was excited. So many iconic songs and you can hear the fun the band is having. The hardest thing with this album is deciding between 4 and 5 stars. Btw - the fact that 1001 albums includes nothing by the Meters is a sign it's a garbage list. I suppose there was just soooo much worthy Britpop that there was no room for the GOAT funk band. After all, we really needed to listen to 'A Grand Don't Come For Free'.

Yesterday it was reinforced that metal is my least favorite music genre. Today it was reinforced that funk continues to be my favorite genre, based on ratings in this project at least. The former I knew for a long time, and the latter I knew I liked, but not how much. This was a great album. Give Up the Funk was a song I knew and had on a few playlists already, but the rest was just as awesome. Bopping on my way to work is the best way to go to work, and this was an album full of bops. There aren't any true standout songs, as they all mesh together into one awesome 38 minutes of fun.

Pure funky goodness. What a fun, no worries album.

"Mothership Connection" by Parliament is a classic funky concept album. I find concept of this album interesting about Afro-futurism where black people promote funk music in outer space. From this album, some tracks are great to listen like "P-Funk", "Give up the Funk" and "Unfunky UFO".I like the funkiness from the album. What I don't like about this album is there is too much many spoken word passages and tracks length are dragged too much that doesn't benefited the album. It is fun to listen from start but due to long song length it feel disconnected from the album and has weaker ending track. Overall a good funky album but lengthy songs and weaker ending track are the downside from this album.

Today is disclosure day! If we ever come in contact with the mothership, I can only hope it involves GC and Parliament! From beginning to end, this album is a blast. I can't explain it and don't want to. If you don't enjoy this album, my guess is that you will likely not make it through the list. This is Funk for Funk's Sake. Worth every juicy note.

Well they ain't The Temptations of Prince but us gotta love the funk. I've always enjoyed Motown and good soul music. I wish there was more of that these daze. PARLIAMENT did a great job and painted a picture in my mind as I listened and fell funky.

Good album, even if not really my style. When it comes to funk, I prefer the fusion with rock (as in record by Funkadelic in this same project) than with disco. But, in any case, this is at least 3 or 4 stara (probably, for my personal taste, more in the 3 star range).

Parliament (and funk from this era generally) always makes me think of my mom, so my rating for this album is definitely biased. However, I can't consciously remember hearing any of these songs before except for Give Up The Funk. This album is groovy front to back, has an interesting intergalactic throughline, and is overall an excellent 70's funk album. Favorite Tracks: Unfunky UFO, Handcuffs, Give Up The Funk
