The Hour Of Bewilderbeast by Badly Drawn Boy
Jul 25 2025

Really a 3.5 more good than less good songs, some real head spinners, and great lyrics - the closer in particular.

Junkyard by The Birthday Party
Jul 26 2025
Crime Of The Century by Supertramp
Jul 27 2025

Coming in knowing nothing about this band other than the name it's mindblowing, a stadium band in the same hemisphere as Queen? Love it, will listen again when I need the feels good man!

Heaven Or Las Vegas by Cocteau Twins
Jul 28 2025

Dream Pop is a new genre for me and I really enjoyed this album, overwhelming at times, but the closer laid me down gently.

Jul 29 2025

Nice blend of R&B and early rap.

Slanted And Enchanted by Pavement
Jul 31 2025

Pavement has a sound on this album and they stick with it. Not bad, consistent.

Hejira by Joni Mitchell
Aug 01 2025

This is peak Joni figuring out her new direction; road trips are you kidding me? And collab with The Band; nothing but to love this one.

En-Tact by The Shamen
Aug 05 2025
Tank Battles by Dagmar Krause
Aug 07 2025

This reeks of Germanic classical music influence. It didn't wholly appeal to me but can see how it took the world by blitzkrieg.

The Blueprint by JAY Z
Aug 08 2025

Poorly mixed music and background vocals on the first 4 tracks that get better into the middle of the album; maybe the sound they were going for with pop candy hip-hop. Was told this album defined a generation and I grew up with Grandmaster Flash, NWA, and into gangsta rap, Dre, Snoop, Pac, Biggie, then Em, so this one just didn't take.

Sticky Fingers by The Rolling Stones
Aug 10 2025

Not their greatest, but close!

Bandwagonesque by Teenage Fanclub
Aug 11 2025

Some tunes made me think of The Eels, 1989 and 1991 debuts though across the pond from each other. Great bands both.

C'est Chic by CHIC
Aug 14 2025

Le Freak we used to cover for a reason; the rest of the album dances around that great tune.

Aug 15 2025

Echoing the sentiments of those pointing out that a gravely voice and endless diatribes and monologues over a decent rhythm section does not a jazz album or facsimile thereof make. This is on the level of Kid Rock which is no level to speak of in decent company.

Rocks by Aerosmith
Aug 18 2025

Great rock and roll that got some good rotation in the peelers.

Moving Pictures by Rush
Aug 26 2025

Are you kidding me? Rush virgin and this is a Gordie Howe hat-trick.

The Fat Of The Land by The Prodigy
Sep 04 2025

If I wanted bland pablum i would have gone to the grocery store. Not Kid Rock levels of bad cause you'd at least need a brain to comprehend how awful this tripe is.

I haven't heard anything quite like this before!

Justified by Justin Timberlake
Oct 02 2025

Not my cup of tea, it sounds like a dirtier version of Michael Jackson with lesser beats. The kids must have loved it at the time.

Suzanne Vega by Suzanne Vega
Oct 03 2025

I don't think a re-listen would change my opinion; better examples of women folk singers from that era, though it's likely a matter of taste.

Swordfishtrombones by Tom Waits
Oct 04 2025

Coles Corner by Richard Hawley
Oct 28 2025

This guy I need to explore in depth; nick cave vibes, some elvis, some Leonard Cohen lyrics/mood. Wondering if this is the best, will def. listen again.

Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
Oct 29 2025

This reminds me of Miles' 70s period of shifting patterns and grooves developing organically. I loved it!

Astral Weeks by Van Morrison
Jan 11 2026

Sublime album, very easy on the ears. Great lyrics and lyricist!

Truth by Jeff Beck
Jan 12 2026

Sensational guitar work and backing, although the Greensleeves in the middle threw me.

Jack Takes the Floor by Ramblin' Jack Elliott
Jan 13 2026

Nice old school blues album. I like the shout out to Woody, and hearing Dink's song was neat given JT covering it. Damn them bedbugs IYKYK.

Raw Like Sushi by Neneh Cherry
Jan 14 2026

Give me the fugu fish. Nay nay I say, this is no cherry on the top.

The Age Of The Understatement by The Last Shadow Puppets
Jan 15 2026

It's refreshing to hear rappers from different countries!

The Grand Tour by George Jones
Jan 22 2026

I love old country albums listening to the stories; great comeback album and a Tammy Wynette connection!

Diamond Life by Sade
Jan 24 2026

Classic 80s bath in smooth saxophone sounds!

Bookends by Simon & Garfunkel
Jan 25 2026

Beautiful album but I had to listen to it twice. The conceptual opening threw me and I couldn't appreciate the songs as much. The second time I just got it. Love it now!

Lady In Satin by Billie Holiday
Jan 26 2026

I really should have done this with brandy, or sherry. It was a cold winter night here in Canada to enjoy Lady Day. Always the best. The a cappella tracks are incredible to hear her phrasing.

Jan 27 2026

This is an amazing album and I hear so much of this in artists coming up afterwards.

Ray Of Light by Madonna
Jan 28 2026

Was never a fan 30 years ago; time has not changed that opinion.

Dust by Screaming Trees
Jan 29 2026

As an album to go out on this one isn't the worst.

Closer by Joy Division
Jan 30 2026

This sounds like the awful band Glen put together for the Letterkenny talent show. "I want to be close to Christ, and Wayne."

Raw Power by The Stooges
Jan 31 2026

This is the only one I would give 6 out of 5.

Back to Basics by Christina Aguilera
Feb 01 2026

Absolutely sensational album; what a voice, dynamic range, soul.

Supa Dupa Fly by Missy Elliott
Feb 04 2026

Progression on Ravi Shankar; enjoyable.

Rapture by Anita Baker
Feb 08 2026

OK, if I am going Divas I am going elsewhere.

Harvest by Neil Young
Feb 13 2026

The only reason I'm giving this four is to justify the five for Live Rust which is the penultimate Neil Young album.

Palo Congo by Sabu
Feb 14 2026

A perfectly middling example of the genre.

Feb 15 2026

This is a fantastic album top to bottom; very laid back and relaxing grooves and monsieur has a very nice signing voice.

Among The Living by Anthrax
Feb 16 2026

Not bad at all. This was my first listen of Anthrax with a background of Slayer, Metallica, the standard stuff. Good little tunes that chug right along.

Honky Tonk Heroes by Waylon Jennings
Feb 17 2026

I used to hate country music, any kind, now I love this old timey stuff!

Gasoline Alley by Rod Stewart
Feb 18 2026

I did not think I would like Rod as much as I did although his voice and inflections tend to be the same on each track which can grate the ears after a while.

The Libertines by The Libertines
Feb 19 2026

Getting vibes of Marquee Moon, the Smiths, the Cure.

Midnight Ride by Paul Revere & The Raiders
Feb 23 2026

They sound like the Stones, on some tracks. Who influenced whom. So many great songs on this album. Easy 5.

Sweet Baby James by James Taylor
Feb 24 2026

Sensational album top to bottom, soulful songs, great voice. Country Road, Oh Susannah, and the track with the full on brass section!

Moss Side Story by Barry Adamson
Feb 25 2026

This was a terrible time to be able to hear.

Oar by Alexander 'Skip' Spence
Feb 26 2026

Just when you think you can sing along, or tap your foot, it stutters. As a concept album this may have been fine using copious amounts of drugs, but as a piece of history it would best be dropped in an oubliette.

Djam Leelii by Baaba Maal
Feb 28 2026

It's nice to get exposed to music from other countries. This is the 2nd album of African music. Enjoyable. Nothing to telegram home about.

Night Life by Ray Price
Mar 01 2026

Night life, is the life for me!

Mar 02 2026

The picture does not match the music! What a good dose of soul, blues, and grit. Reminder to not judge a book by the cover.

Dear Science by TV On The Radio
Mar 03 2026

Surprise like for me.

KIWANUKA by Michael Kiwanuka
Mar 04 2026

Nice to hear some of the origin of Michael Kiwanuka - Cold Little Heart.

Mask by Bauhaus
Mar 05 2026

Short and sour.

Mar 06 2026

Their first album is gangbusters. It brought me back to the first time I heard the Ramones live at CBGBs, or the Clash storming onto the scene. Pure 70s punk. Glorious!

Basket of Light by Pentangle
Mar 07 2026

Ah yes, not the greatest example of a hippie album. Back to the late 60s with you, no time travel, stay put.

Violent Femmes by Violent Femmes
Mar 09 2026

Darn, I thought I was going to like this more than I did having listened to select Femmes tracks in the past. This one is a pass for me outside of a few OK songs.

It's Too Late to Stop Now by Van Morrison
Mar 10 2026

Such a great album, what a voice on this guy! It's rare nowadays to have a full horn section and what a difference it makes for conveying energy; the trumpet player is sensational in the upper registry without losing control, and the saxophone reminds me of Maceo Parker. They are electric and Morrison's voice is equal to the task. Wonderful discovery for me.

Truth And Soul by Fishbone
Mar 11 2026

Jack of all trades and master of none. Reading some comments I figure high schooler me would have enjoyed the eclectic mix and energy but I was listening to the Specials if I wanted Ska, Bob Burning Spear Raggamuffin for Reggae, funk was all Parliament, etc.

Take Me Apart by Kelela
Mar 12 2026

Inoffensive which is perhaps the best thing I can say about this album, and the worst.

School's Out by Alice Cooper
Mar 13 2026

Pretty bitchin' album Alice Cooper! I love that he paid musicians to play, ah the days for instrumentalists. The sax player and trombone player in particular stood out. Love that Frank Zappa rewarded a diligent young artist and we got this and more as a result. Steeped in Rhythm and Blues, Rock, and a grand finale instrumental my lord. Great work!

Incredible backstory to this band that shows in the music they made on this album. Soubour and Jolie in particular. 3.5-4/5

Not my style of jam bands. Do appreciate the modest attempt.

The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter by The Incredible String Band
Mar 17 2026

I would say the love children of the Mansons and Hobbits conceived in a great lake of LSD; Indian gods looked down upon this and gifted a sitar. Goat horns so Satan had a hoof in this cackling with delight. Greek my mistake. Dionysus poured his wacky wine therein. Bansuri flute? The pantheon of India smiles thusly. I think I saw Spock frolicking by singing about Baggins. Kirk cancelled his Heavy Metal endeavour. Christopher Lee came back from the grave as his last wish to the universe to hear this one more time. Yes, not his first rodeo. Dear god very cellular song sounds like Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Paul Simon from Graceland. Could this merry band be time travellers, or celestial influencers posing as African deities? As a folk album it's decent. Lots of eastern influence you can hear the workings in of microtones. A credit to the variety of music on this journey for opening me up to the possibility of liking something I never would have sought out on my own. This is a 3 for me. I'm likely never to listen to its like again, but will fondly recall going from abject abhorrence to enjoyment for what it is.

Sincere by Mj Cole
Mar 18 2026

Everything about this album screams amateurish which is not necessarily a bad thing we all have to start from somewhere, but as an edition to a best of list this feels like someone has something on someone - pictures they don't want released kind of deal. Not Kid Rock levels bad, but close enough.

Killing Joke by Killing Joke
Mar 19 2026

Really interesting backstory to the recording of this album having it done with a raw feeling like they intended. Standouts for me were Changes and Primitive. Great grit. 3.5/5 leaning towards 4 but only 2 songs on the album knocked my socks off.

The Beach Boys Today! by The Beach Boys
Mar 20 2026

Next to the Association you will not find better harmonies, and the song construction and chord movements keep things interesting. Lovely, not the best album, but close.

Something/Anything? by Todd Rundgren
Mar 21 2026

Playing all the instruments himself is quite the feat pulling it off rather well!

Mar 22 2026

Good background music while I was assembling some robot figurines for myself and a friend. Once the robots were complete I focused and discovered how this album should not be in the foreground. Not Kid Rock levels of bad.

I remember the album cover vividly; the music not so much.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Apr 17 2026

Easy listening album that gets in and out quick. It would likely be good if on a nice sunny road trip with a cool breeze streaming in through the open window, not enough money for a sunroof, and homemade sammiches for a road side pit stop while the tunes keep playing.

Apr 18 2026

It's the Bobfather; this is as good as it gets. Soak it in, look around, and is that a kitty on the cover? Just when I thought it couldn't get any better than this.

Sensational album that reads like a love poem to someone. Electronica is not my cup of tea but this is the best of what this journey I have experienced has come my way.

A Seat at the Table by Solange

Track "The conference" is the best track which displays Indian rhythms that will blow most Western influenced ears out of their expectations.

Apr 22 2026

Kinda neat to see others in the community pick up on the Bowie wannabe vibe. This is like the WWE version of EWC hardcore. It's milquetoast. Terry Funk hot poker it is not.

Horses by Patti Smith
Apr 25 2026

This album is at times incredible, and at times done with a microphone and band in the box? It could be a rock opera. It's a poetry slam. I can hear generations of women singers coming after using Patti's affectations.

White Ladder by David Gray

All the songs sound generally the same. Same tempo, same background percussion track, etc. Nothing offensive about this album, nothing of note, easy guitar included listening lull you into a torpor and bury you in the mundane.

Talking Book by Stevie Wonder
Apr 29 2026

A wonderful album heralding the arrival of spring. A little whimsical? Overproduced with sound effects? The core songs are pure Stevie funky. Nothing like it. Takes a 2nd to Songs in the key of life.

Billion Dollar Babies by Alice Cooper
May 01 2026

Complex chord and harmonic structure is blowing my mind for Alice Freakin Cooper. Live brass instruments, and a string section, god I loved the 70s. Stride piano. Wow. This album is ambitious and all over the place stylistically. A nod to Blue Moon in I love the Dead, now that's just awesome cheeky monkey.

Last track Madness a blatant rip-off of fever which is the kind of dreams this album inspires. Toronto band The Dishes did this genre better.

May 08 2026

26 minute mark a groove and a hook . Ohhh and what follows, yes, more of this! Maybe I need to adopt a two listen rule to albums. Maybe it was the advice to listen to this one with the sound up to 11. Maybe because it was a great counter punch to my noisy neighbour that plays crap music. Maybe baby.

Fetch The Bolt Cutters by Fiona Apple
May 14 2026

A long time since getting something so recent. I am an old. Bolt cutters song good. Yoko Ono dolphin end of the first track. Shades of Bjork. Under the table has a nice deep groove to it. The first listen I was an alien not understanding where this was coming from or going insta 2. Second listen I started getting it, found my favourites, found the groove. 3.5. Would listen to select tracks again, maybe need a breakup to listen to the whole.

Intellectual musicians wanking? It's a fine album no question of the talent involved but seemed a little self-indulgent which is fine it just didn't appeal to myself.

The Stooges by The Stooges
May 21 2026

With the exception of We Will Fall. 3rd favourite Stooges album next to Raw Power and Fun House.

Electric by The Cult
May 22 2026

The fur hat on the album cover was the highlight. The music is overshadowed by bands that did it better.

High Violet by The National
May 23 2026

Poor man's Nick Cave. Succeeds at being worse than U2. Will lull you to sleep with boredom rather than dulcet soothing tones.

Fishscale by Ghostface Killah
May 24 2026

Not as good as Methodical Man but it's WuTang. The Tony Stark storyline was interesting so I need another listen for that.

Let It Be by The Replacements
May 25 2026

This was fun punk for me; felt the roots and the lyrics show the progression. Unsatisfied was my go-to track.

Punishing Kiss by Ute Lemper
May 26 2026

Holy holy holy Lord Smaug almighty Burn baby burn This ain't no disco inferno Outside the collaborations with Cave and Costello I didn't get much out of this album when it later waded into the psychedelic serial like music waters.

Second Head - Punk? like the Stranglers.

Heroes to Zeros by The Beta Band
May 28 2026

I want to give this album a second listen. I don't think it'll affect my rating only it will isolate the tunes I really enjoyed.

Copper Blue by Sugar
May 29 2026

Helpless is a perfect song. Descending bass line, driving drums, lyrics tight, dirty but polished feel to it. Would 100% road trip with this song, buds, and beers. Complete album reminds me of Bleed American, or The Nerves. 4 listens and more to come this one is a gem.

American Beauty by Grateful Dead
May 31 2026

Chord structure was inventive in the middle; the latter half of the album was gospel. This was my first GD album listen and I get the Deadheads lotta wisdom in the lyrics to some bum who knows nothing.

The Only Ones by The Only Ones
Jun 01 2026

Warbly voice from the get go, some songs were OKish. I liked a lot of the English pop albums on the list but this one missed for me.

The Trinity Session by Cowboy Junkies

It's light and mild night on the prairie junkie high on mexican dirt.

Fear and Whiskey by Mekons
Jun 03 2026

This guy can't carry a pitch much less find it playing cricket. Neither could Joe Strummer but one was enjoyable. For fiddling La Bottine. Punk? I'm suprised I've never heard of some bands on this list while others. Drum tracks sound like setting number 3 on your kid brother's toy casio, and every Québec pop tune from the 70s.

The Gershwin Songbook by Ella Fitzgerald
Jun 04 2026

How how the moon double time solo is a thing of beauty encapsulating the vocal range, music history knowledge, and having a ball. Incredible catalogue and collaborations. Nothing could be better about this album, perfect signer, and best represents the genre.

Maverick A Strike by Finley Quaye
Jun 06 2026

Nice reggae album and a cute twist on a Bob Marley standard. Your love gets sweeter is the gem of the album.

In Rainbows by Radiohead
Jun 07 2026

Opening on a 5/4 song nice! Fast number two, then into ballad number three which is solid album pacing. Song four and we're back to playing with polyrhythms lovely feel and groove to this one. Several mellow tunes thereafter, Reckoner has a nice laid back feel. Latter half of the album is one song blending into another which little to distinguish. Maybe ear fatigue.

1989 by Taylor Swift
Jun 08 2026

I am a believer? Never thought I would take to Taylor's music but it's charming. She's a talented vocalist, set up perfectly against smart arrangements, great backing band. I wouldn't be in the car I'd be in the audience with my screaming daughters!

I really enjoyed this one full of energy, a clash quote, and got it entirely confused with SIA over the look.

Bad Company by Bad Company
Jun 10 2026

I'm happy to have started with their debut album. I can see myself falling in love with this band so want to tackle the discography chronologically. Born in 75 so around the time they were gearing up. Lots of bands I listened to sound like they sprung near this tree!

Jun 11 2026

Getting Death Cab for Cutie vibes around Ashes of American Flags and Heavy Metal Drummer; likely the classic piano. I'm the man who loves you great hook! Dirty guitar Rolling Stones. Sympathy for the Devil woo! Poor place song construction Beatles. Overall very good album; I have my favourites, not a full re-listen so a 3/5.

Hysteria by Def Leppard
Jun 12 2026

2nd half of side A; Animal and Love Bites standouts; Pour Some Sugar sounds like the number one hit. Soft spot for Armageddon It; c'mon Steve. Title track and we are back on track after a lull of 2-3 songs. Weird song to end the album on; out with a whimper. 3.5/5

Colour By Numbers by Culture Club
Jun 13 2026

Titular track I didn't realize how much they extended the song with filler parts, variations on a theme. This was all the rage in middle school but I don't remember the sexual ambiguity being that big a deal - there were bikes to ride. Couple of sleepers leading into Changing Every Day a bit more upbeat then into a straight ballad That's the Way - decent. Sparseness helped limelight the vocals. The later tracks are a homogeneous mishmash of Casio drum track #3. You can hear this in most pop songs from the 80s and every dance hall from Limoges to Levis. They rode Karma Chameleon wondering if those produce milk cause it would have been bone dry. Ah, white people reggae. Mister Man. Decent voice on Boy George. Not something I took note of at the time. His ballads are slightly reminiscent of Michael Jackson. Soft and vulnerable. And then we reach Man-Shake which is a thing. Disco inferno that is Mystery Boy. Feels like we're all over the place at this point on this album. Not a bad thing for the variety but I'm walking by not stopping. Into the live tracks I have not heard a song intro'd with "It goes like this" in such a long time. Nice memory. Prototypical one hit wonder album. 2/5

Fever To Tell by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Jun 14 2026

If this album were theatre to me it seems to be a collage of independent loosely related self-encapsulated moments or events tied together. They lead perfectly into Maps which could be ironic. Some pillow talk tracks to ease us out. 1 banger track, live video is sensational. 1-2 others enjoyable. Great vocals showing lots of range with different backdrops.

Rip It Up by Orange Juice
Jun 15 2026

Good sax on I can't help myself. Morrissey? This singer is the Normand L'Amour of Scotland.

Ocean Rain by Echo And The Bunnymen
Jun 16 2026

The Killing Moon stands out. Apparently that's all I have to say about this album. My 2nd of Echo and the Bunnymen; this one is a 2. Post-punk? I didn't get any whiffs of punk in this.

Jun 17 2026

Bye Bye; tight arrangement, backup singers are locked in; Sid Feller key in song choices I have to get used to hearing Charles in a different light. You don't know me much like his Georgia recording. 2 tracks in and this is Country and Western? Someone tell Bob's Country Bunker. Half as Much swings like a pig by the tail! A lot of these ballads sound like something Nat King Cole would sing. There are a lot of ballads on this album. So many ballads! Maybe the title could have been Ballads and Blues? More suited. Distinct lack of my dog died my woman done left me my pickup truck broke down. Still, it's Ray so a 3.

Chirping Crickets by Buddy Holly & The Crickets
Jun 18 2026

Gone too young. What a marvellous talent. That'll be the day is the standout on the album. 3 for enjoyment, 4 for historical context.

Yeezus by Kanye West
Jun 19 2026

First impression is that he made this album for himself, not for the enjoyment of others. Hold my liquor is a nice mellow groove. Strange Fruit sample oh Lady Day had a hard enough life without seeing how this turned out.

Foo Fighters by Foo Fighters
Jun 20 2026

Big Me has some Beatles vibes to it. Lot of healing in this album. No standouts like other Foo songs but the whole amalgamates? I'm looking for a word. It gels as a collective. 4. Would 100% listen tip to tail with a drink remembering Kurt and loving Dave.

Live! by Fela Kuti
Jun 21 2026

This album grabs you by the throat and does not let go until it's done with you! The call and response ending was spirit moving. The rhythms former Cream drummer, wow! I don't think I'll listen to this one again, but it was a force!

Fever Ray by Fever Ray
Jun 22 2026

A more mellow electronic music ride than others on the list in the genre. Seven and Now's the only time I know are the standouts for me in rotation. The rest of the album was just nice.

Since I Left You by The Avalanches
Jun 23 2026

1/3 of the way through and Since I left you sounded like such a nice opener to a summer fun album with beers buds and a lake shore beach, then it dropped off the face of the planet from there. We'll see how it develops. Electricity track and we have redemption. I knew the name was familiar here we go with Frontier Psychiatrist which is an absolute Tom Cruise banger. One good song in rotation, a novelty song, and the rest of the album forgettable as the waves receding into the lake and the beer is all gone.

Pink Flag by Wire
Jun 24 2026

2nd half of the album is more punk flavoured; love it! 12 X U came across this gem when I started my punk journey decades ago. That song along gets a 5, the rest of the album certainly the first half was largely forgettable? I'll try a 2nd listen with rested ears. Good thing, too. Ex Lion Tamer is punk, and Lowdown has a great groove to carry through. As a collection of pieces that make up a concept album of theatre bits or scenes it's a 3 or 4 but as an album to listen to good music it's a 2 or 3. Given the post-punk albums on the list maybe this genre just isn't for me.

Made In Japan by Deep Purple
Jun 25 2026

Do not listen for a 2nd time. Some good wankery, but not as good as the Allman Brothers. 3 mainly for running a call and response, and the lead vocalist screaming his bloody head off.

Jun 26 2026

There goes the fear, number 3 debut on the charts? Sounds like U2 with a less annoying voice than Bozo. Satellites chords match Sounds of Silence so nice to think of S&G as a distraction from a maudlin drivel infused wreck of an album this is. It could have worked with a different vocalist? Something more robust, less whiny nasally. The tunes and band around them are OK. Solid 2. It's an indie band album like most others, nothing of note, nothing to inspire or offend, simply there to be there and soon forgotten.

I Should Coco by Supergrass
Jun 27 2026

I'm glad I'm doing a 2nd listen; just another English alt. band now has 3-4 songs in my rotation and the whole album is growing on me. Solid 3. Lose It, Strange Ones, Time, Sofa (Of My Lethargy) if you're wondering.

World Clique by Deee-Lite
Jun 28 2026

Bootsy Freakin Collins? Maceo? Fred? Holy shiz. If ever I have a metric ton of housework to dance my way through this is my go-to album.

...Baby One More Time by Britney Spears
Jun 29 2026

This album is making me question whether I'm rating these for their historical context, or simply for my own enjoyment. Brittany lacks the gravitas on the ballads, but that doesn't matter to the generation that enjoyed them. The number one track is still a slapper/banger to this day. Can't argue that she made a ton of money, and is one of the most recognizable artists of all time. She worked hard to get where she was. Horrendous family life part and parcel the price paid. Hope she finds her peace. So, the answer, for me or history? 3 and 5.

Rid Of Me by PJ Harvey
Jun 30 2026

Legs is good. Grungy, dirty guitars, nice relentless slow beat. The vocalist is quite raw. Rub 'Til it bleeds same deal. Methodical grunge. Vocals not bound by most conventions. So far, a few songs I enjoyed. Overall, it's a 3 from me dawg. Making a voice sound like scratching electric guitar strings. I'd give this singer a 5, the album as a whole concept suited to an indy demolition theatre performance a 5 for a night, as a musical album going up to 3.5 and maybe 4 with Ecstasy. She's making the human voice do incredible things. Yup, Ecstasy has that greasy dug in feeling which works wonders in 3/4 time. I have no idea ranging from 3 to 5 on this one. Gonna sit on it for a spell.

Youth And Young Manhood by Kings of Leon
Jul 01 2026

This started out as a Black Crows shake your money maker, lead signer for Counting Crows soundalike. Reached Talahina Sky and it's starting to make sense. It's not exactly my jam, but I can feel the gravity of the concept or direction. Rating thought, if I put one song in my rotation it raises a 2 to a 3? This is by no means a 2 album. Going in for a second listen. Wasted Time, how did I miss this gem? Happy Alone slaps. lol 3 to 4.

Moondance by Van Morrison
Jul 02 2026

The obvious Moondance stands out but Caravan is what hooked me. First four songs establishing the tone of mellow, easy like Sunday morning. Caravan laid all the way back. Kinda looks like Gordon Lightfoot RIP Into the Mystic and we have an established trend of deep grooves. Someone put a nickel on the record arm. Bit of a lull for the next two until Brand New Day starts and we're back on track. 3 good songs, the rest was filler. It felt like the overall arch of the album was lost along the way.

Steve McQueen by Prefab Sprout
Jul 03 2026

The Smiths - Faron Young, is that a deliverance banjo backing? Bonny is a bonny of a song. Yeah, second listen didn't move the needle at all for me. Don't think this makes loudspeakers at the mall grade.

Tago Mago by Can
Jul 04 2026

What a weird sensation my head bobbing but I'm not actively causing this. Like breathing it's just happening. This is transcendent. In a castle, new Japanese vocalist. Album art on point. Not pointless long form improv, feels very tight and focused. I wonder if Miles every listened to this, or if they listened to Miles. The last two tracks ventured off somewhere above the stratosphere and the ionosphere, brother, into parts unknown. A little turned off since the first 75% of the album had deep groves and great direction. Improv needs to stretch, maybe I was on the wrong drugs at the time. 4 for me.

Lazer Guided Melodies by Spiritualized
Jul 05 2026

When I want you kicks in we have breached the stratosphere, the ionosphere, gone into the beyond. And into Run which pushes it into a streak. Two is a streak. Take Your Time, 2 seconds in and I know it's a good one. Simple bass line but insistent, driving force, relentless. Hoo hoo the way it releases you at the end, delightful! 200 Bars. When it kicks in 3/4 the way through. Who wrote these songs? Jason Pierce. What a mind, what a mind. And a great way to end this album. My preference is floating in space, this comes a close second.

Black Metal by Venom
Jul 06 2026

Thoroughly enjoyed this for my shower day album. A little Motörhead, a little Metallica. It's nice to be able to understand the lyrics, and screaming guitar solos, balls to the wall drive and drums. I knew Venom from, kudos to Hairball John's metal radio show, In Memory Of, which was a banger. This whole album was a ride, shame my stereo doesn't go to 11. 4.

At Folsom Prison by Johnny Cash
Jul 07 2026

5. I've listened to this album so many times. Vinyl Trinity Bellwoods Park shoutout to the girl with the cute summer dress. Johnny gave these people a piece of their humanity back. No riots, soulful sharing session.

The White Album by Beatles
Jul 08 2026

What can you possibly say about this album that hasn't been said already. 5. It's between Revolver and this.

Make Yourself by Incubus
Jul 09 2026

Stellar must be their #1. It was in my rotation before I knew of the band/album. OK, one of their charting songs. Ah yes, Drive, also in rotation, great tune. Battlestar Scralatchtica moves me. 3 for me. I like the opening vibe, a few hits, and a groove tune.

Sunshine Superman by Donovan
Jul 10 2026

Sunshine Superman titular track is good; Bert's Blues gave me a bit of hope with a smidgen of saxophone. Sitars, sitars everywhere. Great haircut. OK, as the forerunner of the psychedelic rock to come, one of the ones that started the movement fusing jazz, rock, eastern music. He references Jefferson Airplane in the Fat Angel and I was just thinking that group strikes me as more monumental in the movement. 3 for me. Not terrible, nothing I would ever listen to as a whole again.

Tusk by Fleetwood Mac
Jul 11 2026

Minus Stevie Knicks this album is flat. She gets a 6, the album itself is nice, 3.

Wild Is The Wind by Nina Simone
Jul 12 2026

Goddamn son that is an album I don't wanna listen to ever again until it's the last one I ever listen to.

Etherial, lush in parts. I guess there's someone for everyone out there. So there is that. Favourite track: Miss America

New Forms by Roni Size
Jul 15 2026

The Chinese Water Torture of music. I think if this was a backdrop to something interesting like tooling around a city in a Steampunk or Cyberpunk game it would be OK because it's not in the limelight. However, on it's own, it gets exposed to its own monotony.

American Idiot by Green Day
Jul 16 2026

Punk opera. I've listening to these songs here and there because they were part of the mainstream, TV/movies. I enjoying reading a comment that this was just one long song. The transitions are not noticeable, and it doesn't get boring. As relevant today as in 2004 is a cliché but there you have it. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Now I can just enjoy the rest! Yes, this is top tier.

Alien Lanes by Guided By Voices
Jul 17 2026

I added Little Whirl to my rotation. Taking a second listen now. I'm familiar with lo-fi girl as we all are I'm sure but I've never heard a band of said genre. I'm a huge fan of low budget rough cuts. A salty salute had a really nice groove to it and felt short. The time changes in transition to Watch Me Jumpstart are subtle and mind bending I love it! Number to added to the rotation. It falls like a gear into place. Was this album meant to be continuous? The cuts in between tracks jarring. A Good Flying Bird is another short gem. Kinda reminds me of The Nerves, low budget great sounding tracks. 4/5 what a revelation for me. Some of the tracks are short unfinished ideas that could have been fleshed out some? Maybe not the intent.

Bone Machine by Tom Waits
Jul 18 2026

Oh dear, it's another Tom Waits album. Swordfishtrombones was the first. Even beheaded this music is too much. Gave that a one. Since then my depths have sunken to kid rock so Waits that's your low bar. We're sinking cap'n an there's nothin I ken do. Tom Waits the falsetto. Tom Waits the distortion. Tom Waits the why? You know those guys who did "We love the moon, rathergood.com?" All stripped down sounds like he's imitating them. They were doing it for the lols. Tom, not so much. Catchy groove tho noah gonna lie. Ok now He's doing the vocal equivalent of blackface. Jesus Gonna track. There are several tracks with some seriously nice grooves. Goin' Out being one. We are in 2 territory.

Stand! by Sly & The Family Stone
Jul 19 2026

1969 was a helluva time to be alive and listening to music. Alongside the Beatles White Album, Johnny Cash, Zep II, Diana Ross, Hair, Sly and the Family Stone had a unique sound, a tight ensemble with a top-notch horn section, and a furious message to deliver that they did in spades. Easiest 5 to be a alive, daddy, and that's the truth, Ruth!

Out of Step by Minor Threat
Jul 20 2026

Raw, fueled, deep deep grooves, brilliantly arranged, and in and out before the door can hit your ass. Such glorious punk. So where am I? 5. Alive.

Jul 21 2026

Fun album top to bottom, and forming a supergroup with the Dubliners was a highlight. Will check out Rum Sodomy & the Lash for sure!

Jul 22 2026

I never knew I would enjoy noise rock so much! 2nd listen for sure to more accurately place this one. Need a aural palette cleanser. Is this the same album I listened to yesterday? Coming it at from a different day it hit way different? I like the occult witchcraft undertones, and it felt darker the 2nd go-round. I found one to add to my rotation, and the rest set a mood. Solid 3.

Nick Of Time by Bonnie Raitt
Jul 23 2026

Kudos to Bonnie for turning her life around; shame what happened with Prince. My Mum would like this music. A 3 for me. Nobody's Girl; now that's a song, acoustic, which mirrors the hell she went through without a backing band. Tells her story. The other songs are kinda fluff, happy she is happy! And that song is also a turning point launching us into the number one Have a Heart. I would have rethought the first half of the album into something else, or rearrange the order. Something. Too Soon to tell nice ballad upbeat ballad string of three. Road's my Middle Name some down dirty blues. 2nd half of the album is scintillating! Still a 3 for me but I'm happy it turned around, would go 3.5.

Konnichiwa by Skepta
Jul 24 2026

I once firmly declared that no white person should nor could ever sing Bob Marley. Like other reviewers someone from the UK foraying into Hip-Hop struck me as wrong. The hard streets of Manchester, or Liverpool. When I think of hard UK living I think of Steven Regal Blackpool. Em put his own stamp and made Hip-Hop his own. I suppose I am just not that familiar with the UK scene, and this album doesn't inspire me to want to be.

Jul 25 2026

I played in an in-part cover band of Jamiroquai so this is like hand in glove. Full horn section: trumpet, trombone, alto, tenor, and baritone sax. We had a cracker (UK slang for really good) of a lead singer, drummer was twin of the alto, bass players for days laying down great grooves, keyboards, and guitars. Played all around and the funk was strong. That was a few decades ago so it's interesting to see how this music aged. Would the young folks still dance to this? Hmm, I didn't hear the hits that were bangers we used to play so assume a better Jamiroquai album is to come? like 3, for nostalgia.

Whatever by Aimee Mann
Jul 26 2026

The ballads on this album are OK, but I find her voice not up to task on the more energetic/involved songs.

16 Lovers Lane by The Go-Betweens
Jul 27 2026

The poor man's Cure? Comparing the songwriters to Lennon-McCartney is a choice. Coming back to Australia after years in drab England causing an explosion of creativity is hillarious, and awesome; I'm happy for them. A little Smiths? Nothing I would ever revisit as there are other bands that do this sort of thing much better. Maybe paying more attention to the lyrics would bump this, but I'm not enamoured with the vocal stylings.

Jul 28 2026

Hard hitting out the gate; of the original NWA members vocally Ice is crisp, Dre laid back love both. Public Enemy produced? Damn. Little Isaac Hayes, RUN/DMC Chuck D and Flav, James Brown. YoYo! Cube references the uzi which is apt cause the lyrics are spitting tight and fast, spraying his truth all over. Sensational album. Full of the fury. And no vaseline wasn't even on this album. What a great mix of all genres and styles and Cube was the mouthpiece of NWA as much as Dre backed the beats. Easy 5 EEEEE.

Tommy by The Who
Jul 29 2026

Christmas is where it really kicked in for me with the ping pong stereo effect of the backup vocals. The overture was good giving the operatic overview of what is to come. French horns got a chance to trumpet like elephants which I am positive they thoroughly enjoyed! Lot of filler on this album which if taken as a whole is OK for a concept album. Let's see about the payoff, talking about Underture. Mmm, Uncle Ernie into Fiddle being said payoff. Long game, slow burn. Ahhh, Pinball Wizard coming in cold not transitioned into. Interesting choice. Wow, for a track that stuck with me from childhood it sure is shorter than I remember. The rest of the album blew by after I read up on the story. Some nice bits here and there. I'm not certain I can place this historically. It's a rock opera, best I've heard? No. Was it life altering? I can see the subject matter being controversial. The arrangements are nifty and it sure involved a lot of artists from different genres in different iterations. So historically higher rated than musically for me. Maybe in 20 years. Just a 3 for me, for now.

Heavy Weather by Weather Report
Jul 30 2026

First track and how does this measure up to Maynard Ferguson which is what I heard first. Oh my! This is good. OK, I respect this is early jazz fusion; I'm heavily biased by Miles. Great music, fantastic musicians, forgettable tunes. What is the direction? Exploratory but cohesion? Wayne is so damn good. Toss up him and Coltrane on the soprano. I like how tight Wayne is.

Channel Orange by Frank Ocean
Jul 31 2026

I was ready to write this off as an insta 2. Not into it but not as terrible as Kid Rock. Whiny voice, he's no Marvin Gaye, better rappers/RnB singers who talk about drugs. Who cares that the selling point is that you go falsetto then back to tenor with ease and grace. Then Pink Matter came along. Gamechanger. Or maybe it just took that long. All the songs have the same tempo and beat so I may have been lulled into acquiescence if not appreciation. Would have been better with some rain. Standing by my 2.

Cloud Nine by The Temptations
Aug 01 2026

Funky like a monkey. Nice to see how they embraced the changing times reinventing themselves keeping the old and adding the new. Don't Let Him Take Your Love for those liking the old school sound. Dennis Edwards has a monster voice, range, rasp, incredible! Full horn section I hear you bari sax you! 3 Not a huge fan of the transition. Kudos to them for evolving, but there are better examples like a Mayfield or Hayes, but perhaps not so much a whole quartet quintet of singers doing it together.

Queens of the Stone Age by Queens Of The Stone Age
Aug 02 2026

These all sound the same. Sorta dark, sorta plodding along, nothing that stands out to recommend or any need to re-listen. Feels like what emos would dig? I painted my nails black but was only a poser. Sorry, I got nothing on this. 2, not even a decent 3.

Aug 03 2026

Herbie Hancock is the only reason I'm going back to re-listen to Hunter and the Hunted. I thought this was a Talking Heads album. I have a simple mind. Well, it's no Headhunters.

Aug 04 2026

The music is like RUN DMC with saltier language. Weird since NWA blew the doors open with Straight out in 89, and this was in 91. They had Dre, T had Evil E? DJ Alladin. Maybe it's that. There's a lot of use of what sounds like those old soundboard websites where you push a button to repeat something "bodybag" "bodybag" "New Jack" "New Jack" Maybe it's cause I'm a diehard Cube fan over T. Ahh, a RUN DMC shoutout. The music is jazzy, sampling JB and Black Sabbath, Public Enemy. Just not my favourite vocal stylings. It's got the right words but the flow is off. 3 for genre, 2 for all else.

Rising Above Bedlam by Jah Wobble's Invaders Of The Heart
Aug 05 2026

World groove music! A really good mix of flavours from all over. I was exposed to Jah Wooble through Gone to Croatan which is an incredible tune. Wish I remember who tipped me off to that. So the world music album threw me, but pleasantly.

You're Living All Over Me by Dinosaur Jr.
Aug 06 2026

Noise grunge. Not the hugest fan of the lead singer's voice. Tunes seem tight, nothing really standing out. Poledo was mentioned a lot in other reviews which was interesting but not the album redeemer it was made out to be. I guess like some of these albums if you grew up with it being a significant part of your childhood/young adulthood/adulthood it would mean more, but just as music for music's sake that's a 3 for me.

More Specials by The Specials
Aug 07 2026

Def. not as strong as their self-titled album. Great SKA, great horn players, some duds in the bunch enjoy yourself bookending is a neat technique just wish it were a more hopeful message. 3.

Solid Air by John Martyn
Aug 08 2026

Holy shit. Coming in blind to this. Solid Air auto-add to my rotation and straight into Don't Want to Know which is a solid 2nd tune. Who is this guy? Wiki talks about death of a friend 1973 right in my wheelhouse of best musical era short of earlier Jazz, earlier before Classical. Damn! Track 3 and 4 right outta some of the best funk would not be out of place with Hayes, Mayfield. Love me some sultry sexy saxophone. Breathy, like Ben Webster. Some folk, dirty blues. This album has a lot of everything, and all of it is done really well! Solid 4, several tunes in rotation, and would easily easily listen to this with a nice drink and smoke, some rain, some sun in the evening, on a porch step thinking about life.

Lam Toro by Baaba Maal
Aug 09 2026

What a rich interesting life. I found the setups to each song to be unique and surprising, leading to unsurprising ostinato and standard funk with a great voice and vocal range. It had good moments in it, but not enough to be good.

Exile On Main Street by The Rolling Stones
Aug 10 2026

I couldn't tell you the name of any one song off this album, but could point to any and say this is what the Stones' sound is.

The Last Of The True Believers by Nanci Griffith
Aug 11 2026

Deciding to switch from folk music to country is never a bad idea outside of the greats like Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell,, etc. Standard country fare, nice background album.

Odessey And Oracle by The Zombies
Aug 12 2026

Care of Cell 44 - nod to Sgt. Pepper, the album cover makes me think that's the case. I love the chord progressions in this one, the melody rocked this one into my rotation. OK, wiki with the ties to Abbey Rd, the recording equipment the Beatles used for Sgt. Pepper, rubbing shoulders with Pink Floyd, wow! The Bach chorale like harmonies Changes is neat, secular music like. This will be our year strong piano, and next track we're on to organ. Lovely range of instrumentation. I'm giving this a 4 likely, but not intending to relisten to it many times. It's too potent.

Ogden's Nut Gone Flake by Small Faces
Aug 13 2026

Afterglow caught my attention. Love that dirty organ and pure vocals. Bass player is solid foundation. Long agos has a nice groove, and claps which can be either awesome (like here) or too much. Decrescendo and Crescendo at the end is such a great move I wonder if this was done with the mixer or the band. Towards the end we get a hard left turn into the beatiful absurd story of Stan, a Fly, it was a wild ride! 4

Screamadelica by Primal Scream
Aug 14 2026

Slip inside this house marks my second album in a row where the 2nd track on the album is the hook! Afterglow from Ogden's Nut being the other. Damaged sounds a bit like the Stones. I'm coming down has a smokin saxophone player like Kenny Garrett levels of Coltrane sheets of sound coming at you so fast it'll make your eyes spin!

The Gilded Palace Of Sin by The Flying Burrito Brothers
Aug 19 2026

Do right woman and Dark End of the Street are some mainstays I played in my cover bands, saw through the Commitments. I see more now what Jake and Elwood were talking about where the blues and country music are joined at the hip. Nudie suits on the album cover! I love that story. I'll give this a 4 because I really want to relisten to this some day.

Tres Hombres by ZZ Top
Aug 20 2026

Dang, I gave Eliminator 5 stars, and this one blows that one out of the water! Nice dirty bluesy album.

Aug 21 2026

Debut?! Holy, talk about storming out of the gates. Quinton's on the way. I love skits in rap albums because like this one they're just brimming with fun! This is very reminiscent of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, RUN DMC, where the play is in the words. 3 Feet High and Rising, to boot. I like the whole spectrum of rap and hiphop so it's nice to have a palette cleanser like this and do some smile head noddin'. 4.
