Album Summary
Yank Crime is the second and final album by the San Diego, California post-hardcore band Drive Like Jehu, released in 1994 by Interscope Records. It was the band's major-label debut and its artwork was created by singer/guitarist Rick Froberg. The band toured in support of the album but then quietly disbanded the following year as the members moved off to pursue other interests. In later years, as guitarist John Reis found international recognition with his band Rocket from the Crypt, a gradually growing audience began to pinpoint Drive Like Jehu's music as a catalyst for the eclectic San Diego music scene and the emerging national emocore scene of the 1990s. In 2003 Reis re-released Yank Crime on his Swami Records label, including on it the songs from the band's "Hand Over Fist" / "Bullet Train to Vegas" single and the original version of "Sinews" that had appeared on the compilation Head Start to Purgatory.

4/5. One of the best post-hardcore records of the 90’s. It doesn’t waste any time either as it comes out swinging with “Here Come the Rome Plows” with its pummeling and loud guitar riffs. And from there every song hits so hard and they all take so many interesting twists and turns like on the long “Sinews” which starts out slow but then goes all out in its final few minutes. Discussion of 90’s post-hardcore often gets shortened down to just being about Fugazi and Unwound but I fully believe this record should be in that conversation too.
Saw 22k monthly listeners and assumed the worst but it actually wasn’t that bad. They’re from San Diego so that must mean they’re super chill. Decent album
The first song made me think I was going to hate the album, but I think that’s my least favourite song on it. There were other moments I didn’t like, some pretty harsh noises at times, particularly the feedback sound. But the rest of it grew on me. I liked a lot of the guitar parts and I enjoyed some of the math rock elements like the changing time signatures. Probably not one I’ll come back to but I did enjoy it in the end. Fav song: Do You Compute – also liked Super Unison and New Intro Least fav: Here Come the Rome Plows
Pure aggression that nearly managed to get me headbanging. Of course it sounds like a bunch of teenagers in a garage, but at least they got the right idea.
Probably closer to 3 stars for me--but it's also the album that launched a bunch of records of my youth (not on this list) that I'd give 4 stars...so makes sense to give this 4 too.
Pleb filter and it seems that most people on this site got filtered hard. This is one of the best noise rock albums ever. The riffs are crazy, the guitar playing is so unique. I don't know how they were able to even make most of these sounds. The songs are lengthy but thrilling, they constantly manage to keep things creative.
lärm mit ansätzen von melodie - teilweise.
Schwer zu hören wenn die Gitarre mal getestet wird
cool stuff
I tried to listen to this album about five times, succeeded three of those times, and with each subsequent listen there were diminishing returns. By the time I got to "New Intro" I consistently hoped the album was over. Not horrible, but not the 4+ I wanted to round up to at some point. 3/5
Sounds a bit like Nirvana. From the same era.
10/10/2026 Unfortunately, for whatever reason I just couldn't get behind this. Normally this would be up my street, but I just didn't vibe with it. Spotify listeners: 22.7k
Yeah, it's decent post-hardcore punk, but it's still post-hardcore punk and as such not really my jam. I can appreciate what they were going for, but I'm not along for the ride.
Discordant and raw. Repetitive and doesn't go anywhere. Some of the tracks hurt my ears. 2/5
Just not listenable for me
I've been enjying hardcore lately thanks to Turnstile, so I kind of enjoyed this.
Absolute treat of a record and one that has grown on me tenfold since the first listen. Some of the texture here in phenomenal.
fun listen i like this!
Interesting music, far too much screaming.
This was interesting, I enjoyed how chaotic it was. Surprised that it’s from 1994
noisy and angry but i liked it :)
Some of the songs were just sooooo long... By Bullet Train to Vegas I couldn't tell if he was singing or a cat yowling
This wasn't terrible. It was noisy and chaotic but tolerable, and I appreciate the unhinged vibes and the guitar and drum work. Not really my genre though.
You know, when the words "noise rock" and "math rock" are thrown around, I usually fear the worst. It is not a combination I care for. This album lived up to that fear for large swaths, but ocassionally had its interesting moments. Incidentally it was during the more mellow moments when there were no words. The bulk of "Sinews" fell into that category. There were also some very Nirvana-esque moments -- the vocals of "Sinews" would qualify as would "Luau." I liked those moments too. The problem "Sinews" also suffered from one of the major flaws of the album. It was too damn long.
Must listen to, eh? So our ears can bleed? Screaming and noise and totally not my jam. Why are the worst albums always the longest? DNF (1)
why is he so angry?????
10 Stars
Noisy with no redeeming features.
Hell yeah dude. Two stepping in my living room. I can hear the influence from this on some of my favorite music.
okay maybe when i said that i didn't like aggressive music on my AC/DC review i was lying a bit. because this was really cool. i guess it depends on what kinda aggressiveness it is. and i usually really dislike screaming in music but there was something about how these guys mixed it into their sound which made it more palatable to me. i liked how they mixed it lower so it wasn't too overpowering. maybe i'm starting to understand something idk. i think my favorite moments on this album were the insanely interesting riffs at the beginning of "Do You Compute", and the long ending of "Luau". i heard lots of sliding on the guitar which gave a really cool effect, i loved that. adding this one to the library!
I love maths which makes it heartbreaking that I seem to hate math rock. Wonder how many other people have tried to do maths while listening to math rock- it doesn't help, in fact it may actively hinder. Thought the fire alarm was going off at the start of Super Unison and that was one of the best songs. Favourite song: Super Unison Least: Here Come the Rome Plows
This album fucks so hard. Luau is just oppressive in the best way. I loved this album. Rare time I actually listened to the extended edition on here
Loud, shouty, aggressive nonsense. Saved from a 1 because a couple of songs had some ok music, but the vocals are awful. 1.5/5.
Right from the start I knew this would be a hard listen... and that assessment was proven right by the end of the album. Definitely not my cup of tea.
Raw. Noisy. Loud. Great. 4/5.
Yikes I still have a headache from trying to listen to this crap. IMO one of the worst on the list!
Really enjoyed this one. Quite the journey through a bunch of sounds, going from hardcore into some post rock areas. With some noise chucked in there. But it all worked for me.
Guess I’m emo now cos this was great.
Like a sold high tier. Good for people with hardcore genre taste ig. Love the screams.
Nope
This album has been on my radar for quite some time. Love this raw noisy hardcore. Also that album cover is peak
All rather too shouty for me And to think, people moan about Psychocandy being “loud”
Nope.
Not terrible. Loud angry music in the 90's is much better than than post punk crap in the 80's. At least it's listenable.
Screamo! Mechanical noise! Atonal guitars! Big bangin' drums. No thanks. I like a lot of stuff that people in my household might generously refer to as, oh, what ... ? ... "unlistenable"? But I can't get into this. Seems like everything these days is a 1 or a 5. Why am I so polarized?
I’ve been meaning to check out DLJ for years because I know they influenced a bunch of bands I like I just never got around to it. I dig it.
Not for me. Too much noise, not enough substance.
Never heard of this band before.
Wonderful punk
Hardcore noise rock is not for me. This was just tiring. Every song sounded the same and, invariably, lasted a minute or two longer than it needed to.
So edgy it’s serrated.
This is the type of stuff i signed up for. Its great.
Interesting...but not really for me - at least listening. At a punk club or live I know I'd dig it.
Heavy and hectic, there's a time and place for this.. But it's not often.
3/5
Sunday, 13 September, 2026 Great album. Solid guitar work. Interesting sound. A little long. These 90s albums all think you want more. Less is always better.
Sounds like a lot of local bands in the 90s but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Could really use some editing tho
The unfortunate 3.5 from me
Had not heard of them, was great to hear a precursor to Pup, Turnstile, etc.
fucking fuck I hate the middle of this album The opening and closing parts are amazing, and then theres the 6/10 middle bah
This is so in-your-face-awesome! I've never heard Drive Like Jehu before, but I love this!!! What a nice surprise. Liked Songs Added: Here Come The Rome Plows Luau New Math Sinews
Wasn't the vibe for me yesterday maybe another listen will push it to 4 stars but yea it was definitely good.
Some good songs but the album is too long and I lost interest. Maybe a 2.5
"Luau" did not need to be 9 minutes, this is that Chicago song bullshit all over again.
I've had some low points during the last 3+ years of listening to albums via this site, but this rivals The Cramps album as the single worst listening experience of my life. I heard a dying fox years ago, it had been hit by a car and was slowly dying in the road. It couldn't move and there was blood everywhere. That was better than every track on this album!
It’s super easy to put off a punk record, especially when it is made by a band that really didn’t make a whole lot of records. But when Jehu’s at the wheel, its a punk rock blast. So many songs on here are so long, with some crazy Tom Morello-esque effects on them as well (luau 7:45 sounds like flightreacts), but that doesn’t stop them from being generally enjoyable. Solid record but it really isn’t anything more.
Zarąbiste, jeszcze do dosłuchania, ale 4-5
It wasn’t the worst, but I didn’t like it. Some songs sounded so repetitive and were quite annoying actually. Will not revisit this.
Meh. Too long, nothing interesting going on besides a few non 4/4 time signatures
Like, I get where it's coming from, but that doesn't change the fact that it physically hurt my ears to listen to at some points.
Nice
Had its moments, not awful, but just middle of the pack for me.
Not sure what I'm missing here. Definitely some bright spots musically but I have a set peeve about music with vocals I can't quote hear or make out what the lyrics are. A few songs needed to be half as long as they droned on for.
Good lord, this goes incredibly hard. Great music for the shitty day I'm having. I love the guitar work. It's atonal without being annoying. The songs all have a nice buildup.
Overall Rating - 2.36/5 (4.73/10). Definitely not music I enjoy or ever listen to.
Wasn’t sure about this album right away, but the more I listened the more I enjoyed it.
Nothing to write home about but I did enjoy it for the most part.
Soooo I went from my own personal listening of NOFX to this. Which really isn’t that much of a change. It’s pink on some sort of level. There’s no swearing so it’s not bad ass punk but it’s punk still. Not like Green Day who are more lesbian punk as in they suck and aren’t in a punk genre. I didn’t get any bangers out of this one either but it’s still worth the listen
Meh
I did not not this band, very good album.
Based on the New Math, my Human Interest in this album is lacking. Do You Compute?
This was fire!!! A crazy Slint, Fugazi, and At The Drive-In mix. This is the exact kind of album that makes listening to 1000 other British bullshit albums worth it. This album sits on an island, alienated in time from a couple scenes, with no band follow-up and limited fame from anyone involved. It would have been hard to discover without this list. This is some real PUT SOME HAIR ON YOUR CHEST music
Rate: 8.5/10.
good album its hads 2-4 good songs fabulous?
we're raspy today it seems
inaspettato
Noisy, angry, energetic, kickass. I had never heard of this band and hardly heard of them outise of this. This is actually a pretty good album, complex in an interesting way, not very accessible, true, but I never got the feeling I was listening to amateurs. All of this while being a genre I'm usually not into. Key tracks: Here Come the Rome Plows
This album paved the way for a lot of current emo bands that I enjoy.
I feel like this is like the Velvet Underground’s early days where nobody heard of these guys but the few that did were profoundly changed and all started more famous bands.
4 out of 5. This album is a great new discovery courtesy of this challenge and I'm here for it.
I thought it was a solid album, heavy rock, maybe early metal. The playlist it generated afterwards was solid too.
basic punk rock
Meh, lots of noise, not a lot of substance.
Það voru sprettir framan þar sem ég hugsaði "Þetta er nú ekki alslæmt, mögulega næ ég að toga þetta í tvist", en svo var þetta svo hrikalega langt og mónótón að sú bjartsýni fjaraði út. Alls ekki það versta sem ég hef heyrt, en nálægt botninum á þessum lista engu að síður.
I have been sick and have only managed to get a listen via YouTube on an iPad, but this might just be my find of the 1001 so far. I was aware of them (I was a RFTC fan and knew they were linked) but I’d never investigated the linage. It’s got an impressive dissonance and a powerful and engaging vocal assault and seems tight AF. I also got into Trumans Water (also San Diego) and I could hear some similarities there too. I will be returning to this properly but I can already give it a sweet score.
This goes so hard
Meh. Lots of screaming.
I can appreciate how a lot of people might enjoy the frenzied aggression of this but I just don’t like shouty music, it gets annoying after a very short period of time. More frustratingly there are moments on this album where the shouting subsides and the music is actually decent, but they don’t last and the incoherent shouting resumes. Contrary to what some of the other reviewers say it’s not that I don’t get it, it’s that I don’t like it.
Loud black pearl, occasionally 10 things I hate about you soundtrack vibes Good volume and beat defo a headbanger but still soft rock
