James Brown
5/5
Fantastic album, James Brown was an incredible musician and this really made me feel like I was seeing this live performance. If anything I found it too short.

Run-D.M.C.
5/5
It's hard to put oneself in the context of hip-hop of 40 years ago, knowing how far Run D.M.C came after this. Having said that, I really appreciate how this is them pretty much stripped to their essence, and I really like the anger and vindictive spirit of this album, and the sort of "pulp" sound is something that really hits the spot for me. In summary, even the songs that aren't as good have me engaged and entertained so it pretty much has all I ask for in a hip-hop album.

Paul Simon
5/5
I love every bit of this album - I find Paul Simon weird enough to be interesting without being pendantic and that is a very fine balance

Jah Wobble's Invaders Of The Heart
2/5
This is so 90s - conceptually it's all over the place. I'm assuming these are the kind of people that wanted Esperanto to be a thing. It's entertaining enough musically at times so I'll give it 2 stars.

Run-D.M.C.
4/5
Pretty good - consistently fun to listen to, it had me trapped in the rhythm for most of it. Consistently fun to listen to
Curtis Mayfield
4/5
Very good
David Bowie
5/5
Fantastic album. Bowie is weird in a very special way
Paul Simon
4/5
Beatles
4/5
Iconic album, incredible start but unfortunately goes downhill from there. Love the Beatles but this isn't my favourite album from them.
The Temptations
3/5
Good - overall enjoyable but I found it a bit forgettable
Snoop Dogg
2/5
Not a huge fan, lacks a theme. Some songs are good but not very consistent
Christina Aguilera
4/5
That was surprisingly good - engaging, energetic and full of pretty good vocals. It doesn't age fantastically as the singing style is very much a sign of its time and now it just sounds a bit tacky. Still one of the best albums of its kind tho.
Crosby, Stills & Nash
4/5
Such a peaceful listen. Some fantastic songs and a very unique style.
Nightmares On Wax
4/5
So chill, I was literally caught in terrible traffic and still felt super calm. Great stuff
Marvin Gaye
5/5
Amazing.
Fleet Foxes
3/5
Very interesting, I'm not a huge fan of the main vocalist voice but it's not really the protagonist of the album either so it's not a huge problem.
Metallica
5/5
Absolutely incredible - so epic and energising, I don't think I can go back to listen to Metallica without an orchestra now.
Dire Straits
5/5
I've listened to this album so many times. I'm not even a huge Dire Straits fan but this album is such a pleasure to listen to all round.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
2/5
Pretty terrible, it's like Pink Floyd at their most artsy but they don't really know how to play instruments or sing. Really not a fan
The Flaming Lips
4/5
Surprisingly good - I was expecting something pretentious and artsy but it's a lot more honest than I expected.
Anita Baker
4/5
I enjoyed it all the way, it's a bit dated but it still sounds good. Her voice is beautiful and unique.
Wu-Tang Clan
4/5
Pere Ubu
2/5
I assume they didn't have money to pay for a vocalist. There's a song that starts with the sound of breaking glass and I would much rather every song had that instead of vocals. Absolutely terrible. 2 stars for the band cause they actually know how to play instruments.
Eagles
4/5
Great album, very chill and enjoyable. I'd give 5 starts but I know they can do so much better and I also hate the fucking eagles man.
Beatles
4/5
My problem with the Beatles is that I find them comforting so I'll eat anything they do. It's like playing a silly sitcom like friends when you don't feel like watching something heavier.
Bob Dylan
4/5
I can't really properly score it having listened to it only once if I'm being honest. I feel like I'm missing so much..
The Notorious B.I.G.
3/5
Biggie has this incredible way of being extremely real, such a good storyteller. There's a few songs that really lets him down as they're quite sexist and it makes it hard to relate.
James Brown
5/5
Fantastic album, James Brown was an incredible musician and this really made me feel like I was seeing this live performance. If anything I found it too short.
The Last Shadow Puppets
5/5
I'm surprised about how much I liked this as it's not really my style but I really enjoyed it. Improved version of Arctic monkeys in my opinion. Would listen to it again
Supergrass
3/5
It was alright, found it pretty unremarkable - definitely didn't need a 2nd part.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
4/5
Really good - pretty consistent in style and theme without feeling repetitive and boring.
Rush
4/5
Stephen Stills
5/5
Absolutely great - every song was remarkable. I had heard of Stills just from Crosby, Stills & Nash but never actually listened to him separately. Will definitely add to my favourites and listen to it again.
The Who
3/5
I'm a bit disappointed with myself for not liking this more. I quite like The Who and this album certainly has great tunes, but I somehow didn't tune into the story and after a while it was a drag. I must be missing something
Supertramp
5/5
Always loved Supertramp and 'Dreamer' was one of my favourite songs as a kid so I enjoyed this a lot.
Björk
4/5
WTF - why do I like this?
Led Zeppelin
4/5
Good stuff - some great tunes and a general energising feeling.
The Stone Roses
5/5
A problem I often have with these less-known UK bands is that they often sound like a knock-off of a famous band. I don't think that happens with this album, they have their own sound and it's absolutely great. Will listen again and add to my favourites.
The Boo Radleys
3/5
This album feels like they've done all the styles that they could think of with the hope that some will stick - annoyingly it kinda works. Some of it is good and some of it isn't so when I look at it as a whole piece it's a bit average. If I could give it 2.5 stars I would.
The Birthday Party
1/5
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
5/5
Hard to say anything bad about this, it's jazz
Jacques Brel
3/5
Nice voice and good singing for a live album, so doing this on one go seems meritable. It does make me wonder wether there'll be more albums in other languages too or this is just a one-off because it's french and stuff in french is automatically art or something.
The Stooges
5/5
Pretty awesome - strong sound and something feels very unique about it.
Lloyd Cole And The Commotions
5/5
That was a nice discovery - I really enjoyed that. It sounds to me like Indie should sound like.
Black Sabbath
4/5
The United States Of America
2/5
What in the Yoko Ono is this? I'm not against a bit of psychedelic sound in the right dose but that was definitely too much.
Run-D.M.C.
John Lennon
4/5
The Byrds
4/5
It's the sound of the 60s - I find it somewhat soothing.
Pink Floyd
5/5
My father in law sadly passed away after a motorcycle accident the day before I got this album in this app. I could not bring myself to listen to it. I was going to tell him about this app, cause we loved talking about music and he wanted to expand his horizons so I thought he'd love this.
5 starts from him.
Common
3/5
I liked the style, but somehow I found it a bit boring
Count Basie & His Orchestra
3/5
I don't really know why but it wasn't what I was expecting - it wasn't bad tho
Led Zeppelin
5/5
Mj Cole
1/5
I can't listen to more than 30 seconds of this without getting PTSD flashbacks from when my mum would drag me to a shopping centre. I'm definitely not putting myself through 2 whole hours of this.
Pink Floyd
5/5
The Sabres Of Paradise
1/5
Absolutely not
Meh
Teenage Fanclub
3/5
Great discovery - they might not be a new favourite but I'd listen to it again. The album cover needs work tho
CHIC
4/5
Simon & Garfunkel
5/5
This is their best work in my opinion - they do a great job of making you feel deep emotions
Pulp
4/5
Not bad at all - I find that they're charismatic enough for me to tolerate the more artsy bits that I'd normally find irritating
Michael Jackson
4/5
I'm not a huge Michael Jackson fan but I guess this is as good as it gets
Miles Davis
5/5
Janelle Monáe
4/5
Ramblin' Jack Elliott
4/5
Worth listening to in my opinion - feels honest and real without being pretentious.
Bob Dylan
3/5
I feel like a fraud for not liking this more - I really enjoyed most of the songs and he's undeniably a lyric genius. However, as an album I found it heavy and hard to listen to in one sitting. Also some very shrill harmonica playing that just wasn't very pleasant and not very musically interesting in my opinion.
Boston
5/5
White Denim
4/5
Another pleasant surprise from this app - weird at times but in a way that I find enjoyable. Great energy and tone, overall really good.
Derek & The Dominos
3/5
It's just alright until you hit Layla then it becomes amazing for a bit then goes back to just alright.
Peter Frampton
5/5
Absolutely fantastic - I didn't know how much I liked Peter Frampton until I got this album on the app, really enjoyed it.
Fats Domino
4/5
That was pretty awesome
Beck
3/5
I feel like this album for me is in the fine line between sort of catchy and terribly boring. It kept getting my interest and losing it all the time. I think overall was good tho
Elvis Costello
3/5
This was so incredibly harmless that I don't know what to rate it. I guess someone needs to do background music for garden centers
Antony and the Johnsons
5/5
I was not expecting to like this at all - when it started I instantly thought it would be extremely indulgent and pretentious for no reason and I was more than ready to give it up after the first minute. But I quickly realised that there was a story behind it all, a message of uncertainty and transition that I found extremely moving.
The Verve
2/5
I am so disappointed with this album, I genuinely thought I liked The Verve but that was so dull.
Kanye West
1/5
Fuck no
T. Rex
4/5
My expectations for this album were relatively low, I thought T-rex was a bit of a one-hit-wonder. At first I thought my expectations were correct but it won me over with that sort of glam-like sound that just puts me in a good mood.
Solange
3/5
Some interesting stuff here but I never really got into it.
Brian Eno
4/5
It took me a bit of time to get into it, mainly because I feel like I was overthinking it and it's also not quite my style. I'm not a huge fan of his voice but the production is impeccable and it's very interesting musically. Overall I think it's a good album.
Stephen Stills
4/5
Stills is a true artisan - it may not be the most exciting album but it's crafted very carefully.
Beastie Boys
5/5
Beastie Boys always deliver - incredible energy
GZA
4/5
I got this straight after a Beastie Boys album and the contrast is really striking. This album was really good though, the beats are just incredible and the lyrics are pretty good.
Isaac Hayes
5/5
This guy is absolutely brilliant, you can encapsulate this album into a category of its own. Absolutely timeless
Radiohead
3/5
It's a hit and a miss for me. I guess that's the risk of going experimental. Some stuff in this album I found overwhelmingly beautiful and some other parts were just overwhelming.
Nirvana
3/5
As iconic as it may be, I'm not a huge fan.
Violent Femmes
4/5
I didn't know this band before - I was quite disappointed to learn that they're dudes if I'm honest. That said, it's a pretty good album - although the vocals are not what I'd normally like, it creates a sort of unsettling atmosphere that reminds of the darker parts of the Rolling Stones. It also achieves a very distinctive sound with a relatively simple production which I think is very valuable
The Kinks
3/5
I liked it, but I was expecting more - it felt very dated and I found it lacking in pace.
Madonna
1/5
Really didn't like it - it feels like it was designed to play in a very crowded fancy club that people go to just to say they've been. Not a fan
Amy Winehouse
5/5
This is an exceptional album - her voice is full of character and flawless in the execution, but it's the production that makes this feel relatively fresh despite being a genre that's been done to death.
4/5
I absolutely loved every minute of it - I can't disagree more with these extremely dated values, and I doubt I'd ever find myself in their shoes, but the feelings are just very real, and that's something I do relate with.
David Bowie
5/5
Bowie just takes you to places you never thought you'd ever go and that's just beautiful. Listening to Bowie songs here and there is good, but listening to a whole album is just an incredible experience.
Deee-Lite
3/5
This is not really what I would normally listen to and subsequently I'm not a huge fan. That said, I can appreciate that this is good stuff - it does manage to put you in a good mood.
5/5
This was such a contrast from the previous kinks album I got a few weeks ago - that was so empty and just plain boring, I was very disappointed. This was interesting in all ways.
Elvis Costello
3/5
Some interesting stuff there, I was almost expecting to get bored to death and I didn't really. I gave the last Elvis Costello album 2 stars and this was just a bit better so there you go.
My Bloody Valentine
2/5
I didn't hate it, but I also didn't like it. Overall just makes me feel like they're so tired and I think they should've taken a nap instead of recording an album
David Bowie
5/5
I thoroughly enjoy listening to Bowie, and I found with this album that's not his characteristic voice and singing style that makes him the artist I love. I could hear him in every track whether he was singing or not and I think that says a lot about him as an artist. He's unmistakable.
Lucinda Williams
4/5
I quite like country, and this folk-like sound, with its rough-and-ready vocals and its personality does hit the spot for me.
X-Ray Spex
5/5
Proper ass-kicking punk - I wasn't too sure about it in the beginning but the longer I listen the more I like it
Eminem
5/5
I forgot how fucking dark and weird this guy use to be
The Allman Brothers Band
1/5
I found this album very puzzling. It ticks all the boxes to be the kind of album I enjoy, yet I could not wait for it to be done. Even the crowd attending the concert sounds only mildly enthusiastic in the beginning and slowly looses interest throughout. I'm glad I listened to it before I died cause now I know that you can also do good music and somehow be absolutely terrible.
Emmylou Harris
5/5
So good
Mott The Hoople
4/5
Feels a bit like a halfway house between Bowie and ELO - and although I love both, I'd say the sum of the two is not equally good as them separately. I still found it very enjoyable and would listen to it again so I think 4 stars does it justice
Michael Kiwanuka
5/5
What a surprising one - the production is so fresh and innovative without being purposefully obnoxious and irritating. I'll definitely add this to my favourites
Manic Street Preachers
4/5
Pretty good stuff - I feel like they had more freedom as artists by this point and had the chance to do something edgier. My biggest problem with them is that I struggle to understand what they say, so a lot of the lyrics are missed on me.
Led Zeppelin
5/5
Everything about this album sounds right to me - only flaw, it's too short
William Orbit
4/5
Good ambience music, the kind of chill-out bar vibes. I guess it's not really designed to pay a huge amount of attention to it so I just kind of left it as background noise and thought about my own stuff - once I did that I actually enjoyed it.
The Pogues
5/5
This is the one male stereotype I allow myself to have - fucking love this shit
Nick Drake
5/5
So strangely good
The Beta Band
2/5
I thought it sounded very aged, I can imagine people listening to this at the time it was released (which wasn't even that long ago) and convincing myself this was good for the time. Then I realised that so many other albums in this list stand the test of time and manage to be worth listening to after 50+ years and suddenly this album went down the drain for me.
Paul Simon
5/5
I love every bit of this album - I find Paul Simon weird enough to be interesting without being pendantic and that is a very fine balance
Destiny's Child
2/5
This album makes no sense in terms of theme. Musically it's just a product of the end of the 90s where we were so use to singers not singing that when someone sang relatively ok we worshipped them. Beyonce has a terrific voice, but the endles and aimless runs are insufferable
Todd Rundgren
2/5
I found this a bit too "formula". Happy song - Sad song - rocky song - repeat. Feels very generic.
Venom
3/5
Delivers what it promises. I feel like in the 80s it was frowned upon when a metal singer was actually good at singing so it feels like they actively sing like shit. Good songs, poor execution - the sign of the 80s metal
The Black Crowes
3/5
Not bad but feels like it was done before and better.
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
3/5
This was weird - like purposefully weird, which is the worst kind cause it feels a bit forced and it really loses points on the lyrics. However the sound did get me interested, it's very 90s but it has it's own twist to it and I do enjoy that.
Also it would really benefit from trimming some songs, 1h20m is definitely too long for an album like this.
Digital Underground
4/5
I don't think the concept of this album deserves a whole hour to be fully understood to be honest. Other than that it is actually entertaining enough and it made me smile a few times with its silliness which I actually appreciate.
David Bowie
5/5
It's hard to listen to this album outside its context - Bowie knew he was dying and turned it into a beautiful album. 'Lazarus' and 'I can't give everything away' are just incredible.
Jah Wobble's Invaders Of The Heart
2/5
This is so 90s - conceptually it's all over the place. I'm assuming these are the kind of people that wanted Esperanto to be a thing. It's entertaining enough musically at times so I'll give it 2 stars.
Grizzly Bear
2/5
There's maybe a couple of songs here I would listen to again - but I would most definitely do it to impress my more hipstery friends. For the most part this album is an aimles walk
Lou Reed
4/5
Lou Reed is a weird one for me - I feel like he just doesn't want to sing and just kinda talks, but somehow I also think he pulls it off. This album is his peak in my opinion, but even at his best I find some of his stuff too irritating to give him 5 stars so he's getting 4 (of which 3 belong to Bowie).
Elvis Presley
4/5
I'm always torn by Elvis. In one hand I feel like he's not original enough or even talented to be as big as he was, he didn't write any of the songs and his music is pure formula. But in the other hand his charisma is just so remarkable that I always end up dancing around and enjoying myself with his music, which in essence just means I guess I like this.
The Doors
5/5
Fucking love the doors - the eerie feeling with the use of the organ, the vampire-like persona of Jim Morrison, everything in this album seems to work for me.
Arcade Fire
4/5
I'm pleasantly surprised - it's an interesting sound and the concept is not bad, although it doesn't feel like something that you need to pay extreme attention to it. Makes good running music
Sam Cooke
5/5
Sam Cooke is just amazing - this album made me feel like I was there.
Morrissey
3/5
Hookworms
4/5
I'm pleasantly surprised by this, it has some energy and sounds unique enough to merit 4 stars. Especially considering that by this point feels like everything has been already done. As a whole album it's pretty consistent without becoming boring.
John Prine
5/5
Where has this been hidden? This is exactly why I started using this app. Amazing stuff
Taylor Swift
4/5
Hard to fault Taylor Swift to be honest - this album has everything a pop album needs executed very effectively and that's probably her best quality, being able to always do what she does and do it well.
Lou Reed
4/5
Pulp
5/5
I don't know if it is the fact that I've not been able to properly listen to music in a while or if Pulp is just growing on me as I get older but I really thoroughly enjoyed this album.
Adele
5/5
Fantastic album
Bee Gees
2/5
Nice enough to listen to, but a little boring at times. Some songs are just very irrelevant and it makes me feel like I should be done half way through the album. The orchestration is cool but it kinda feels like a gimmick.
Fairport Convention
5/5
This is a really good folky/psychedelic rock album, a really chill vibe that feels very timeless.
Red Snapper
1/5
This is like listening to the "you wouldn't steal a car..." Anti-piracy add on DVDs for a whole hour. No thanks, I did about 20 minutes and gave up.
The Rolling Stones
5/5
This is probably one of my favourite Stones albums - extremely characteristic sound, with their 'bad boy' attitude complete contrasting with The Beatles. Masterpiece
Basement Jaxx
2/5
Is this the unreleased album from the guy in 'Peep Show'?
Jane Weaver
3/5
It's not bad, but it's a bit weak in both lyrics and vocals and it just feels unoriginal. It's still pleasant and easy-listening
Radiohead
2/5
I feel like I'm missing something here. I found this pretty boring and I don't really know if it's that I just don't understand it or if it just is.
Eurythmics
5/5
Amazing album for working, cleaning or just generally doing boring tasks - it's groovy, engaging and light, like a good 80's synth pop album should be.
The Specials
3/5
It starts off ok with some fun ska-type stuff, but about half way it seems to loose the plot and becomes utter nonsense. It's a weird one but I don't fully hate it.
Nitin Sawhney
4/5
Weird
Depeche Mode
3/5
First half of the album is just same old same old, 80s synth stuff as expected. The second half tho goes towards a more new wave sort of direction and I loved it. It has a kinda Vangelis sound that I really enjoyed. Unfortunately half the album being good and half being bad averages out on a mediocre note.
Don McLean
3/5
Aside from American Pie and a few highlights the rest of the album is pretty weak. In terms of American singer-songwriters he's not my favourite.
Robert Wyatt
1/5
I've never been so irritated in my entire life
Wilco
2/5
It's either boring or irritating. Some listenable tracks but they don't redeem the album.
The Who
5/5
Outstanding work in my opinion, everything in this album seems to work.
Hüsker Dü
2/5
This feels like going to a pub and there's a band playing - you didn't go there to see them but there they are. At first it's like, alright nice some music would be cool, but half an hour into the gig you've had enough.
Suede
4/5
I feel like this kind of style is always a hit or a miss. In this case is a hit
Franz Ferdinand
2/5
Nah not a fan - I just don't get it
Flamin' Groovies
4/5
Sounds like the rolling stones, so it's pretty good.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
3/5
This album is heavy and hard to listen to, not only because of the grief theme throughout it but also because it's indulgent and slow which in turns makes it a bit boring. It certainly sounds like a hard painfull process that he went through and I can't deny that it makes the album have a certain gravitas. But aside from the sadness I feel like there's not a lot more going on here and it makes it a bit plain in my opinion.
Coldplay
5/5
Incredible work, I didn't think I liked Coldplay this much but everything in this album ties together extremely nicely. Great stuff
Joni Mitchell
5/5
I always think I hate the artsy vibe and the whole musical poet thing that always feels kinda empty to me. But somehow Joni Mitchell does not feel empty, but more or less the opposite, like she's not saying all she could and I love that.
Brian Eno
3/5
As per usual with Brian Eno - interesting stuff but not always in a good way
De La Soul
4/5
Weird, but kinda fun.
Common
3/5
This wasn't too bad, but just I can't shake the feeling that this is just a 2pac wannabe
Laibach
4/5
I don't know what I just listened to and I don't know why I like it.
Erykah Badu
4/5
The Smashing Pumpkins
3/5
The most irritating voice of the 90s that somehow made it work. My respects for pulling it but not something I particularly enjoy
3/5
Might be a controversial opinion, but I'm not too keen on this album - I feel like they found one sound and exploited it too much. Annoyingly it is a sound that works well in good measure, which. Explains the hits that just by being known save the experience of the album.
Little Simz
5/5
Absolutely incredible, very powerful
Leonard Cohen
5/5
Fantastic album - I feel like it really represents well it's concept.
Beatles
5/5
This is probably one of my favourite Beatles albums - I feel like this represents their real sound to me. I just wish they didn't do Run For Your Life
Soft Cell
4/5
This is so out of style right now that's actually back - I'd give it 5 stars if it wasn't because half the songs sounded like failed attempts of tainted love
Screaming Trees
5/5
I loved this - specially in the context of 90s music this is absolutely incredible
Paul McCartney and Wings
5/5
This is such a good album - it's just so energetic and playful.
Queen
5/5
Frankie Goes To Hollywood
3/5
Arcade Fire
4/5
That was a lot better than I expected - a bit repetitive and self-indulgent but that's what indie is I guess.
Willie Nelson
3/5
Good selection of songs but overall uninteresting to me if I'm honest.
The Beau Brummels
3/5
Not terrible, just feels a bit overdone. I feel like it belongs in a movie set in the 60s playing over some generic 60s footage
T. Rex
4/5
I always forget how influencias was T.Rex in the 80s in Spain - This album is so familiar to me without being necessarily known
Thelonious Monk
4/5
I mean, yeah, it's Thelonious Monk - potentially the most annoying name that you're most Hipster friend can ever pronounce. Annoyingly as well it's not bad, although it does play with that fine line of being genius Vs. Being a 5 year old discovering the piano makes funny noises.
Simon & Garfunkel
5/5
k.d. lang
3/5
Fugees
4/5
Duran Duran
5/5
Blur
5/5
Best blur album in my opinion
Django Django
2/5
It started off ok and I thought I was going to like it, but after a couple of songs I couldn't really take anymore
The Go-Go's
5/5
This was fun
Dennis Wilson
4/5
Interesting - I found it a little confusing at times, like he wasn't sure what direction to go to. The parts I got I liked tho.
Kraftwerk
3/5
I hate Electronica in general, but I found this one tolerable, even enjoyable at times
Patti Smith
5/5
Before I started I felt like I didn't have time for it but I decided to give it a chance. I was so wrong - loved every bit of it - I'm almost annoyed at how good it was.
Muddy Waters
5/5
Outstanding
Neu!
1/5
Most tracks feel like royalty-free music for YouTube videos, and the ones that don't sound generic are just obnoxiously annoying
Kings of Leon
3/5
Ella Fitzgerald
5/5
Simply fantastic - there's a reason this is the sound we use to represent its time
The Young Rascals
2/5
How many stars can you dock for a horrible album cover? The sound is alright but felt pretty average
Sly & The Family Stone
5/5
Incredible stuff
Hole
4/5
I'm a 90s kid I incapable of disliking this
Lauryn Hill
5/5
This album was an absolute game changer, I first listened to it when I was a teenager and I feel like it gave me so much perspective and understanding of the world. The miseducation of Lauryn Hill was actually my own education
John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers
2/5
White boy blues
Love
4/5
Not bad at all - great energy overall and the sound may not be massively special but still really enjoyable.
A Tribe Called Quest
4/5
Not bad at all, but also not outstanding. A few highlights that bring it up to 4 stars but I have to admit it's a push.
Sonic Youth
2/5
Not a fan - a bit noisy and confusing
Beatles
5/5
Early Beatles never disappoint
Stevie Wonder
5/5
Absolutel genius
Butthole Surfers
3/5
They certainly surfed my butthole and I can't say I hated it, didn't love it, but didn't hate it.
New York Dolls
5/5
Love everything about this, the aesthetic, the sound, the lyrics, the voice. Absolutely everything about this is a 5/5
Roxy Music
4/5
I hate saying that albums are "unique", sounds like it was terrible and it's the only compliment I can gather, it is not the case for this one - it's unique in the best sense of the word
OutKast
4/5
Pleasantly surprised to be honest
Wire
5/5
The best Post-Punk albums in this list so far. Great energy.
The Smashing Pumpkins
3/5
As per usual with Smashing Pumpkins it just doesn't fully hit the spot for me - there's some pretty good music in there and the energy overall is fantastic, but somehow his voice just takes me straight out of the zone.
B.B. King
5/5
Can't fault it
Tori Amos
5/5
I absolutely loved this - the writing is fantastic and the piano arrangements are just so bold and beautiful
5/5
One of my favourite albums of all time, so not much I can say that's not been said already.
Can
2/5
Hard to keep pay attention to it to be honest - it doesn't sound horrible but it's a bit purposeful awkward
Bobby Womack
5/5
The sexiest album on the list so far
Muddy Waters
5/5
Absolutely amazing
Queen Latifah
3/5
It's good, but it feels a bit uncooked - if I listened to it blindly I would have said it's Queen Latifah
Billy Bragg
4/5
Interesting - felt quite timeless
The Cure
3/5
I am somewhat disappointed - The Cure is one of those bands that I've not listened to too much and everyone keeps recommending, so I guess it's my own fault for not managing my expectations. However I do think I'm objective when I say I found this a bit underwhelming and maybe a bit shallow. Still a relatively pleasant listen tho so 3 stars sound fair
Pixies
4/5
Pretty good consistently
Girls Against Boys
5/5
That was so good
Belle & Sebastian
3/5
Very enjoyable overall - some good song-writting and interesting melodies. Maybe it didn't stand out enough to make it a fantastic album but if all stakes were perfect we wouldn't have hot-dogs 🤷
Alanis Morissette
4/5
This is a great 90s album that definitely stands out in the musical context that is in, unfortunately it's affected by it and it feels dated still. I can't shake the image of my mum cleaning around with this in the background and being annoyed to death about the "rubbish" she was listening to, so can't give it the 5th star
Elton John
4/5
Great album - docked one star for "Indian Sunset" cause wtf was that
The Byrds
3/5
Good working music but otherwise fairly unisteresting
Dr. John
3/5
Certainly unique, but not always in a good way.
David Bowie
5/5
Perhaps not my favourite Bowie album so far, feels a bit less inspired than others. Still an incredible album so it's still getting 5 stars
The Cult
4/5
Fuck I really needed this - It's very much a stoner rock vibe before stoner rock was really a thing. I really enjoyed it when I was listening to it and I will probably listen to it again, but I have to admit it's not particularly remarkable so I feel like I can't give it 5 stars
CHIC
5/5
When did clubs stop playing this?? It's literally designed for dancing!
Barry Adamson
5/5
This is a bit of an interesting find in this list - it's weird, but in the same mesmerising way twin peaks is. There's a structure, and it experiments over the established and does it well
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
4/5
I need to grow up and just admit I like Neil Young. It's time for me to start going to bed at a reasonable time and learn a bit about gardening.
New Order
2/5
I've definitely heard most of this before in the pre-recorded tunes in my parents old Yamaha keyboard - I can't say I hate it, it's just generic 80s synth pop
Dead Kennedys
4/5
I think this is the first Punk album in this list I actually enjoyed listening to. It's energetic and infuriating in the best way possible. If I was to fault it on anything I'd say it's a bit all over the place in terms of theme
R.E.M.
5/5
Great album
Coldcut
1/5
This is so irrelevant for music history that it was removed from Spotify. I think the reason it's in this list is that is so generic and uninteresting that it can't be replicated. Meaning that even if an artist actively tried to be so plainly irrelevant they would become interesting for trying, so it belongs here on the basis of being THE perfect shit album
The Band
5/5
Incredible album - I can't fault it
Dire Straits
4/5
Good old Dire Straits - never fantastic but never terrible. Not many bands can achieve this and I think that honours them
Ramones
5/5
I'm an absolute sucker for The Ramones. They represent the epitome of punk - taking piss out of classic "low-quality" pop music while sounding practically indistinguishable from it. It may be subtle but it changes everything.
Killing Joke
5/5
This was good - it's a bit strange and sort of repetitive at times, but somehow it kinda works. Kinda like videogame music, it just really seems to suit for just walking/running or working. I really liked it
Lorde
3/5
New Zealand's Taylor Swift? It's not bad, but it's feels done to death. So it's really downside is that because I feel like I've already listened to everything it looses my attention and gets a bit boring. The vocals are surprisingly good, but she still falls into that trend of making a baby-ish voice and that's a real shame cause it taints it.
Burning Spear
5/5
Thoroughly enjoyed it - sounds incredible, it's fun but still gives you something to think about. One of the best reggae albums I've heard and certainly the best one in this list so far...
Manu Chao
2/5
I'm surprised to see anything in Spanish in this list, but that said I'm not surprised that it's Manu Chao. I've never been a big fun, mainly because although it seems to represent an ideology of freedom fighters and seems to have some important substance behind, it's actually doing this fight more harm than good. This kind of attitude is the reason Spanish left-winged parties aren't taking seriously, the culture of the weed-smoking, hippie-ish and artsy that gets completely lost in the arts themselves rather than doing anything. This is what they did to punk in Spain, and it feels like it was purposefully orchestrated to make the remainder of strong-left representatives an absolute joke.
Rant over, this isn't bad - it's catchy and fun, I just wish I could see it as just that.
Nas
5/5
I can't score this objectively - this was one of the albums that got me into hip-hop when I was young, and Nas was an absolute reference.
Brian Eno
4/5
I feel like this is almost too normal for Brian Eno - it's his first album so I guess he didn't have as much artistic freedom as he would have wanted to. For any other album that would be a downside but in this case it's actually good
Earth, Wind & Fire
5/5
Sooo groovy - I was in a fantastic mood for the rest of the day, no traffic jams would annoy me and that is priceless
Parliament
4/5
I'll be honest I really did not expect to like this but I've been proven wrong in so many levels - it still wouldn't be my top choice but this is undeniably good
Curtis Mayfield
4/5
Incredible as usual - perhaps not his most remarkable album but still a fantastic one
Doves
4/5
That was actually surprisingly good
Joan Baez
3/5
I could hardly differentiate her from Joni Mitchell for the longest time - It's not bad, but I find her voice too flowery and I feel like the lyrics loose some of their power in it
Coldplay
5/5
I hate myself for liking Coldplay
Neneh Cherry
4/5
It was fun I'm not gonna lie
Various Artists
5/5
Aahh nice touch 1001 - I'm not normally a fan of Christmas albums but obviously hits different on Christmas day. This album is simply iconic and timeless
Travis
2/5
This album is like toast and butter. It's not bad, in fact you could say it's good - but it's just dull. The obvious highlight is 'Why does it always rain on me" and even then it's somehow duller in it's context than it is as an isolated listen. I feel like one star would be unfair, but at the same time being boring is sometimes worse than being terrible...
Nina Simone
5/5
I just adore Nina Simone - she's one of the best musicians of all time and all she made stands the test of time. This album sounds beautiful, it feels well rounded and there's nothing I can fault it with. Absolute 5 stars
Jurassic 5
4/5
Good, but somehow I feel like it was a bit average.. may be an unpopular opinion
Suede
4/5
First half of the album feels like it deserves an album in itself - great sound, with clear influences but still sounding unique. Second half lets it down a bit though, it just gets a bit weird from "The Two Of Us" onwards and kinda looses the nice balance it had. Still think was worth a listen and an enjoyable one.
Public Enemy
5/5
Genuinely incredible album - strong political content, presenting the rage of the lower class in America, fundamentally black. This is an amazing show case of "write what you know"
The Thrills
2/5
Not very thrilling. Not my cup of tea - the guys singing style is pretty irritating.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
4/5
I was fully ready to hate as soon as I pressed play, but it was far from terrible. I'm not a huge fan of her voice but this format works for her and I was very pleasantly surprised by the structure of the album, as it seemed well thought.
Air
4/5
I listened to this while I was walking at night after the rain and it instantly made me feel like the tortured protagonist of an indie movie - didn't hate it.
Beck
2/5
I don't think it was bad, but it was also not engaging enough for me to have strong feelings about it
Fatboy Slim
1/5
Another album in this list that sounds like a piss take - when they make jokes in TV shows about how easy this music is to make it sounds exactly like this
Led Zeppelin
4/5
Perhaps not their most inspired work, but still good - they wanted to explore a creative direction but found a bit of a dead end. Kudos for trying tho
Pixies
5/5
What an album - full of energy, incredible sound and very well rounded. Probably the best Pixies album in my opinion.
Depeche Mode
4/5
Not a massive fan of Depeche Mode but this is not a bad album - the obvious highlight is "Personal Jesus" but some tracks were really not up to the standard.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
5/5
Holy shit that was unexpectedly incredible - so energetic and fun. Some tracks seem to loose the plot a bit but nothing too out of place
Jimi Hendrix
5/5
This is good - slightly insane but good.
Steely Dan
3/5
Not bad - very unsurprising tho, it was exactly as I expected it to be and that's a bit meh
Elton John
5/5
Elton John at his best
M.I.A.
3/5
This is really not my kind of stuff if I'm being honest. That said I can appreciate this is kinda fun to listen to, it still does all the things I find irritating about this kind of music so I can rate it very high. But from this genre this is potentially the most interesting album I've heard
Love
2/5
Stevie Wonder
5/5
I've listened to this hundreds of times - it's an incredible album, musically interesting all the way through, fun, positive, and just genuinely beautiful.
TLC
2/5
I found it so boring and uninteresting - It just feels very generic.
George Michael
4/5
Not bad for someone that's trapped in the bottom of a well
Joan Armatrading
5/5
That was great - such balance with some folky almost country sound with some funk influence and just overall so personal and unique. Very enjoyable
Prefab Sprout
5/5
This feels ahead of its time - a lot of the songs could easily be Arctic Monkeys and you wouldn't know. Really enjoyed it.
Hanoi Rocks
5/5
I thought I was going to hate it seeing the reviews - But not even close, loved every minute.
Bee Gees
2/5
Not gonna lie it was boring as hell - I'm giving it 2 stars because through that boring stuff "Trafalgar" stands out very epically to then crush back down to boringland
Booker T. & The MG's
5/5
What a great journey - who says you need to use words to say anything
Cat Stevens
4/5
That was pretty good - although, ironically, it's not my cup of tea
Guns N' Roses
5/5
This is obviously Guns N' Roses at their absolute best - when I first listened to it years ago I thought "there's no way the whole album is as good as the Welcome to the Jungle" and it proved me wrong.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
5/5
I don't want to like Neil Young, what is wrong with me?
Iron Maiden
5/5
This is obviously not the polished, well-produced Iron Maiden we know now, and I actually mean this as a compliment - I like the rougher sound, and it somehow makes it more fun and organic. If this was the first Iron Maiden albun that fell into my hands I think I would have been much bigger fan.
The Replacements
4/5
It'd be a 5 star from me if it wasn't for the "outtakes" - not sure why they included them, maybe they didn't have enough material to make an album but oh well.
Ash
4/5
This sounds so 90s with that very distinctive sort of teenage sound but with some almost "Beatle-like" tunes sprinkled in. Very interesting album
Arcade Fire
4/5
I liked it, but I'm kinda done with Arcade Fire Albums - I've done about 4 already and I just can't believe that SO much of their music was so influential that every album they've released merits a space in this list
Barry Adamson
3/5
Why is this label as "Rock"? It's more like some strange form of Jazz fusion of random stuff. Weirdly enough I did like it, it was weird but in a way that I found entertaining, not always good but entertaining.
Black Flag
3/5
Had a great workout to this to be fair. Other than that it's pretty average (which is almost a good thing for punk).
Van Morrison
5/5
So captivating, well rounded and altogether an enjoyable listen.
Rocket From The Crypt
3/5
Not bad - good energy level but it kinda does the same thing for the whole album so it eventually gets lost. I still like their sound tho.
Super Furry Animals
1/5
That was so boring that I was falling asleep while walking
LCD Soundsystem
2/5
I just found it so dull. I'm often a bit harsher with newer albums cause the context is just so much more complex and the potential influences are endless. This had some level of uniqueness that deserves some credit, but it doesn't save it from being dull.
Nirvana
2/5
Not a fan. I understand that Grunge sort of represents the 90s discontent and stuff but it just doesn't sound great.
DJ Shadow
2/5
I did like some bits, but the weird rythms and the sort of unsatisfying tone of loops that go nowhere is not something I'd sit and listen to. I assume this is here due to some sort of musical value that I don't fully understand.
Michael Jackson
2/5
Michael Jackson is always a dilemma for me - even before all the scandals came to light I always thought he was overrated, and obviously after all that came to light it only made it more difficult to pick the good parts out of his music. I guess I could dance to this.
Frank Sinatra
5/5
Sinatra's voice is simply unrivalled. This album gives you exactly what it promises - it's elegant, it's beautiful, it's heartwarming and it makes you swing.
808 State
1/5
Yeah I really wanted to listen to 40 minutes of arcade music
Deep Purple
3/5
Live albums are a hit or miss for me - this was somewhat enjoyable but still a miss.
Manic Street Preachers
5/5
My late father in law was a huge fan of Manic Street Preachers. We lost him recently and unexpectedly so this was really hard to listen to for me. Great nonetheless and he would've definitely given it 5 stars
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
4/5
Is this album on the list twice? I feel like I've heard it before...
Haircut 100
3/5
Seems almost out of its time with a simplicity that's almost 60s-like. They've got some good energy and a nice sound - but it does fall a bit into the "background music" category, loosing my interest a bit.
Meat Puppets
2/5
Singing badly as a stylistic choice is bold, wrong, but bold. if it wasn't for that I may have liked it - it's a bit of a different sound and there's certainly something interesting about it. I just wish the singer wasn't in it
Kendrick Lamar
5/5
This is genuinely one of my favourite rap albums of all time - and weirdly enough I'm not a huge fan of Kendrick Lamar. But this album is so well rounded, with an incredibly well developed theme and sound that is consistent while telling a story that feels like a slow wave of changes. Simply fantastic.
Crowded House
5/5
This one hits me hard in a personal level. Can't give it less than 5 stars.
The White Stripes
4/5
White stripes for me are a hit and miss - I do feel like they try to give the audience something different, but I'm not sure they always hit the spot. Mostly enjoyed it
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
3/5
A lot of it sounds like the soundtrack of Castlevania - which is not an insult. I enjoyed it at times, but a bit of a drag sometimes
The Black Keys
4/5
I quite liked it to be honest - it's not the most interesting or innovative but it sounds pretty good
Os Mutantes
4/5
That was a nice surprise - I really enjoyed but it does get a bit repetitive.
Dr. Octagon
2/5
WTF
The Rolling Stones
5/5
This is we're the Stones found their sound, it's original and it sounds amazing. Does not stand the test of time very well to be honest, but I'm not here to judge society in the 60s.
Roni Size
1/5
If you plug your earphones into a bag of cocaine you can listen to the extended version of this album
Nanci Griffith
2/5
A bit generic - I struggle to pay attention for the whole time to be honest
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
4/5
That was fun - it really just felt like being part of a good old fashioned jam session where the band is just trying stuff and having drinks. The downside to that is that they don't always hit the spot
The The
3/5
That was very 80s - almost too much. It wasn't bad, but it somehow sounds like it would be catchy without ever really achieving it.
Fairport Convention
4/5
I really enjoyed that - it has the right balance of psychedelic without being nor boring nor nonsense, which is not easy to achieve.
Metallica
5/5
I can't give this less than 5 stars - so crisp and clean while being so raw and full of emotion. This brings metal into the art scene and I love that.
Gang Of Four
4/5
Not bad at all - love the angry energy. It was indeed entertaining.
Goldie
1/5
It did not age well
Deep Purple
5/5
Pretty amazing stuff - surprisingly well structured and consistent.
Kid Rock
2/5
Nah not really a fan
Jefferson Airplane
3/5
I had high hopes for this one, but I don't think they were met. It's very inconsistent, and while some songs are incredible, there's a huge boring gap in between.
AC/DC
5/5
I know all songs sound the same, but that only means they are all fantastic. It's just energising and firey
Waylon Jennings
4/5
Not a bad album, with a great smoot sound that really just settles the mind.
Oasis
5/5
This is the stuff that put Oasis in the map - it's not my favourite but I appreciate it's good. Certainly one of the only good things coming out of the 90s
Nirvana
1/5
This demonstrates what I already suspected - that under all the noise and oversaturated amps Nirvana is just an amateur band. It sounds like a wedding band but the lead singer was too drunk to sing so the guitarist is filling in for him (even though he's also drunk).
Creedence Clearwater Revival
5/5
This will always be one of my favourite albums of all time.
Chicago
3/5
Why? Why ruin so badly what was a perfectly pleasant album with that? I'm confused and annoyed.
Beatles
4/5
This album has some incredible songs and some absolute garbage - 5 stars for the boys and -1 for Yoko
Lynyrd Skynyrd
4/5
I kinda hate myself for liking Lynyrd Skynyrd this much. The guitar solos alone could carry this album through.
U2
2/5
I can't stand U2 to be honest - it's not that it's bad, I just find it so tedious. I hear the lyrics are good, shame I can hardly understand them.
Wilco
3/5
This album was indeed there
Tom Waits
3/5
Well done him for recording this album despite having swallowed a wasps nest
Ray Charles
5/5
Does exactly what it says in the box - it's Ray Charles, he's a genius, here it is.
Milton Nascimento
3/5
I guess it was interesting? I wouldn't mind if I went to a bar and this was playing in the background
The Incredible String Band
1/5
It is actually incredible that this people are a string band.
ZZ Top
2/5
It's kinda fun, but also simple and predictable, not bad, but also not great
Steely Dan
4/5
That was surprisingly good - I listened to it during a car journey and I was in a good mood all the way despite some pretty bad traffic
Genesis
3/5
It's not bad - but it's tiring, it feels like a marathon and it squeezes out any interest I could have had. It's like running a marathon, there's times you want to give up and if you don't you might the runner's high again - but it's a rough journey.
Mudhoney
2/5
I wasn't very hopeful for this, I thought it looked terrible. It wasn't good, not gonna lie, but it also wasn't terrible.
Talking Heads
3/5
Talking Heads is one of those bands I always think I absolutely hate and then I listen to them and they don't bother me as much as I thought they would. In fact I kinda liked this.
Slade
3/5
Good enough for the pub
The Cardigans
4/5
Quite an enjoyable listen. Her voice is very sweet but borderlines with being shrill, but it keeps a nice tone throughout.
The Jesus And Mary Chain
1/5
I struggled to pay attention to be honest - but the few moments I did I found it very irritating.
The Smiths
3/5
That was alright I think
Guided By Voices
3/5
This is hard to judge - the songs that I liked I found too short to fully enjoy, but the ones I hated at least were over very quickly.
Grant Lee Buffalo
4/5
I quite liked it to be honest - didn't know Grant Lee Buffalo before this but it was a fairly pleasant surprise. Perhaps not the most entertaining experience but still good quality mood music
Solomon Burke
5/5
What a find - I've heard of him before but never actually ventured into his work. I absolutely loved it, it's so colourful and full of soul, very lively while feeling honest, not a fabrication. Really enjoyable stuff
Amy Winehouse
5/5
Fleetwood Mac
5/5
Fleetwood Mac is for me the gift that keeps on giving - when I think I've got the figured out some album comes out of nowhere and really surprises me. Beautiful arrangements, interesting sound and lyrics and just beautiful through and through
The Beach Boys
3/5
I'm sure The Beach Boys Today! In 1965 Sounded a lot fresher than The Beach Boys actually Today! It's not bad, but it smells like my grandma's attic
Adele
5/5
One of the best albums in this list by far - I was delighted when I opened the app this morning. There's just so much real emotion expressed with such ease - one could not speak a word of English and still cry their eyes out listening to Adele. Simply beautiful
Bill Callahan
4/5
That was surprisingly good - I thought it was going to get tedious very quickly but I found it mesmerising.
Neil Young
4/5
I don't want to like this, but somehow the algorithm in my brain takes me back to it every so often and makes me enjoy it against my consent
Pearl Jam
5/5
That was just great
The Flying Burrito Brothers
3/5
That was quite entertaining - it doesn't stand the test of time very well though.
Beyoncé
2/5
I don't know to what extent I can blame myself for the disappointment I felt about this album. She's a great vocalist but this was just not showcasing it at all - it got boring pretty quickly and it just made me feel like I was in any clothing shop
Gang Starr
5/5
This is the real old school, this album paved what hip-hop was gonna sound like for the next two decades across many countries. Proper production, incredible lyrics, it really set a high standard for the guys that followed.
Green Day
5/5
I hated Green Day when I was a teenager for some reason - I guess that it was just getting popular and I wanted to be different and all that crap teenagers pull, so I somehow missed this era of music that I actually really enjoy just because I was too much of a teenager for teenage music 🤔
Michael Jackson
5/5
I feel like it's wrong to like this, but I just love it (said MJ about molesting children)
The Youngbloods
3/5
It was interesting I suppose - but in a way a museum is, I feel like it just went by without having to pay too much attention and still got the gist of it
Sarah Vaughan
5/5
Such a great vocalist, so charismatic, warm, funny and with such personality - absolutely loved every minute of it
Cypress Hill
5/5
I fucking love Cypress Hill - this gave Hip-hop an incredible twist, full of influences but still fresh and unique. Great stuff
Morrissey
1/5
Can't be arsed listening to this to be honest
Beastie Boys
5/5
This is their best work by far - silly and fun
Songhoy Blues
4/5
This is a breath of fresh air in a very predominantly white-european list. I enjoyed it but couldn't shake the feeling that it was here as a diversity token. Credit where it's due, I'll most likely listen to it again
Kings of Leon
2/5
How did they make it so big? It's not like they are terrible but it's not very original, not a very interesting sound, not particularly good vocals or guitar play, not very unique (except maybe his voice, but unique like, when someone says you've done something unique because they don't want to insult you)
Public Enemy
5/5
So angry and vindictive - I always found public enemy very powerful and real, and this is them distilled to their essence. Really great
Bob Dylan
4/5
I feel like most people have a complicated relationship with Dylan - I like it, but I can't be bothered sitting down to listen to it like it should be listened to
Eric Clapton
1/5
It's alright, but it's Clapton
G. Love & Special Sauce
3/5
I'm pleasantly surprised - I was not expecting anything good from this and I found myself enjoying this at times. It's not cutting edge or anything but I like the sort of intimate feeling.
CHVRCHES
2/5
This sounds like 7 year old Taylor Swift
U2
3/5
Korn
3/5
I was looking at the reviews to get an idea of what people thought and it seems like it's a you either love it or hate it situation. Well that's not the case for me. I like the angry energy and the darkness - it does seem a bit aimless though. I cannot tell you what this guys stand for, and they seem to shout random statements that seem to hide a lot of meaning but really don't. Not the kind of album I was going to pay too much attention to anyway so it doesn't massively bother me.
Just aggressively mediocre
Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five
4/5
I actually loved this - really made my day. The only thing is, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five should be 6 people in total and there's 7 guys in the album cover, it really bugs me so it looses a star.
Soundgarden
3/5
I always feel like Soundgarden is a slightly improved version of Nirvana. I'm not a huge Nirvana fan, so to be honest it's hardly a compliment.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
4/5
An interesting concept, creepy-ish vocals, a cool sound. Not bad
Tracy Chapman
5/5
I was lucky enough to get this album when I had a long drive ahead - I listened to it twice. It was awesome
Joni Mitchell
4/5
I like Joni Mitchell, but there's always something that bothers me, just certain things that just don't work for me. I enjoyed this album mostly, and I found it clever at its worst parts, so still giving it 4
A Tribe Called Quest
5/5
This is insanely good - if you told me this album was released yesterday I'd believe it. Timeless.
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
The Boss never managed to hit the spot for me for some reason - I enjoy it in small doses, interspersed in a playlist. But this was a bit much
Dirty Projectors
1/5
Utter nonsense
Spiritualized
3/5
This is not really for me - I somehow can see that it can be enjoyable to some tho, so I can't fault it only on personal preference
Brian Eno
1/5
If I was an airport I'd give it 5 stars
Beatles
5/5
This album marks a before and after in the band, in a way it marks their descent into psychedelic chaos. I love chaos, and I love the Beatles' journey through it.
Talk Talk
2/5
Pretty unremarkable to be honest
Taylor Swift
4/5
Wow there's really a huge divide in the comments about this album. She's arguably the most popular artist of the 21st century if not history - given that music is generally more accessible nowadays, of course, so not something that could be judge in numbers alone. This is a good album - could agree that's not particularly ground-breaking or innovative, but it's certainly well written and not just a shallow effort to appeal to the hipster girl masses. Certainly enjoyed it.
The Cure
4/5
I don't know why I was so prepared to be blown away - always thought The Cure was one of those unassuming bands that for some reason I'd love. I was wrong, but I can't really blame it on the album but my own expectations - despite being a bit depressive it was not a bad album.
Gene Clark
5/5
I was very surprised to not have heard of this before while I was listening to it, so I went to read the description and of course it explains it - this was an absolute flop when it came out and when it resurfaced people realised how good it was. It really emphasized what I was thinking - this sounds too forward for it's time. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Prince
5/5
Fuck yes
David Bowie
5/5
I can't avoid being bias with Bowie - it's been a great journey for me to discover how much I enjoy his music and this is just another path to discover.
The Zombies
4/5
Not bad for psychedelic stuff - fun to listen to
Fugazi
4/5
Not bad but the early 90s I have to say - I was kind of expecting a grunge-ish type album resembling an early-days Nirvana and I was dreading it. This has some energy and packs a punch.
Ravi Shankar
3/5
It's certainly interesting from a curiosity perspective - I actually enjoyed listening to it as a nice calming background for my thoughts. Not something I expect to listen to very often but I do see it has its place.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
5/5
This is one of my favourite albums of all time and my second favourite Bob Marley & The Wailers album just under Satisfy my Soul - so iconic, with such a beautiful, unique and fresh sound.
Sonic Youth
3/5
Didn't actually pay enough attention to it to be honest, and I don't really want to go back to listen to it again - which probably means it was pretty unremarkable.
The B-52's
5/5
What a fun listen - loved the spooky sounds, the great energy and how it just makes you want to dance. This is what I'm playing at parties from now on.
Jeff Buckley
4/5
I had heard of this guy in passing a few times, but never actually ventured to listen to anything of his. I was pleasantly surprised to be honest, something I'll certainly re-visit. Only flaw I see for me is that it feels over indulgent sometimes - but I'll take it as a sign of artistic character
Queen
5/5
I needed this
Green Day
5/5
Green Day's peak - love his voice, the angsty emo-y energy and the anger and vindication behind it. Great album
Metallica
4/5
Box standard thrashy metal.
5/5
It's impossible to write a review that will make justice to this album
Motörhead
5/5
Love Motorhead, love live albums, good.
Radiohead
2/5
The pinnacle of pretension
Aretha Franklin
5/5
Hard to review an album like this - such power, such a voice, so good.
David Bowie
5/5
Bowie makes art that happens to be shaped as music
Joe Ely
2/5
Pretty standard - I'm sure there's a reason critics like this guy particularly, but it goes over my head.
Echo And The Bunnymen
4/5
This was a good album, but I can't shake the feeling that it's a sort of off-brand David Bowie
John Coltrane
5/5
This album just made love to my brain and cuddled me after
Red Hot Chili Peppers
3/5
That was somewhat surprising for me. I was excited to listen to this album, as it seems to be the band's best and I already enjoy the hits, so I was curious to see what the rest is like.
It was alright.
Elastica
4/5
Surprised with how much I enjoyed that
Germs
3/5
Like most punk bands it could really benefit from getting a real vocalist - that said I enjoyed it, great energy, it's noisy and angry without being an overwhelming cluttered mess.
Sufjan Stevens
2/5
Quite bland to be honest, not necessarily bad, but it feels too safe to be properly enjoyable
The Lemonheads
3/5
The 90s didn't give us much musically - in context this is not the worst.
Paul Revere & The Raiders
3/5
Not the most psychedelic of this era, falls a bit short for me.
The Fall
3/5
When I was paying enough attention I enjoyed it, but those moments were few and if the album struggles to keep me engaged it can't be very good.
Lenny Kravitz
5/5
I fucking love this shit - went to check the reviews and fuck me why is this so hated? I enjoyed it a lot
The Everly Brothers
2/5
Background music
The Temptations
5/5
Oooohh yesss
Led Zeppelin
5/5
I owe it to my late father in law to give this 5 stars - it was one of his favourite albums of all time, so much so that "When the Levee Breaks" played at his funeral.
Hole
4/5
I'm not a huge fan of Grunge in general, and I actually think Nirvana is HUGELY overrated. That said I have to admit that I enjoyed this album a lot more than I thought I was going to - at the very least it has a distinct sound and the songs are remarkable on their own.
Sepultura
5/5
This changed me
Doves
2/5
That was a bit boring if I'm honest - I'm glad I wasn't driving while listening to it cause I would have most likely fallen asleep
Supergrass
5/5
I agree with some of the comments about this - I had no idea who these people were but I've listened to many of their songs thinking they were fantastic and somehow never placing them anywhere in my radar. It is a bit unfair how underrecognised they are
Paul McCartney
5/5
I can't help but give it 5 stars - he's an incredibly talented musician and it really feels like even when he's not making the slightest effort he's still coming up with great music. I kinda hate him for it. Also 'Maybe I'm Amazed' is a masterpiece that almost feels out of place in this album.
Raekwon
2/5
Nothing outstanding to be honest - I found the intro particularly annoying while being perfectly unremarkable. I do know what you're saying, please stop.
Badly Drawn Boy
3/5
That was a surprise - not like an incredible one, but more like waking up a few minutes before the alarm so you get to sleep for a few more minutes
Frank Ocean
4/5
That was quite pleasant. It had a tiny bit of an edge at times but it does feel a bit shy somehow - it is a debut album I guess so for that I think it has some merit.
Elliott Smith
3/5
It's too 90s for me to be honest - the overproduction is a sign of it's time and it just makes me feel uneasy and uncomfortable. That said this wasn't terrible I guess.
Megadeth
5/5
I really enjoyed this album, it just puts me in a good mood.
The Strokes
4/5
Kind of fun
The Dandy Warhols
3/5
Nah not really for me - I wouldn't say it's bad but it did lack a bit of character
Peter Tosh
5/5
I've always loved this album - Peter Tosh is such a staple of Reggae
My Bloody Valentine
1/5
Why does it all sound like there's something wrong with my headphones? I had to test them with other music to make sure I wasn't going crazy.
Sex Pistols
5/5
I love it - the energy is incredible, the anger is real and the music is great. Can't fault it
Finley Quaye
3/5
For a reggae album from the 90s this was more passable than I thought.
Pavement
5/5
Wow ok, this was a bit of a revelation for me - did not know this guys before, but it is probably in the better side of 90s music. This album appeals directly to my teenage self, angsty and edgy with some pretty epic song endings.
Simply Red
4/5
This seems to get a lot of hate for what it is - found it pretty mild and quite pleasing for the most of it. I would listen to it again.
Tom Waits
3/5
Can't say I enjoyed fully it to be honest. I like the spooky vibe of Tom Waits in small doses, but the sum of the parts is far worse than the individual tracks.
The Triffids
4/5
It's pretty bland, but I kinda feel like it's intentional. Not sure if it's an ironic excersise or just the best effort they could do. I feel like this for me is the Sitcom of the music scene - it's not designed to be a work of art, but some easy-going comfort music. In that case it's achieved
Van Halen
5/5
I really needed this. Such an iconic style, incredible energy and extremely skilled solos. Can't ask for more.
John Lee Hooker
5/5
I'm a massive John Lee Hooker fan and he's an incredible musician, so even if this album falls slightly flat I still enjoyed it massively - can't justify giving it less than 5 stars cause there's albums I've rated 5 that I haven't enjoyed as much.
Orbital
1/5
NOPE
Judas Priest
5/5
This is THE Judas Priest album. Great stuff
Bert Jansch
3/5
I enjoyed the fast Spanish guitar-like touches and the general vibe of the album, but it did a bit boring and feels monotonous
Jorge Ben Jor
4/5
A fun listen, it's an interesting sound with great rhythm. I enjoyed it.
Jimi Hendrix
4/5
This kind of confirms what I already suspected - I'm not that big a fan of Hendrix. He's a very talented player by all means, I just wished he played music I liked more. I still enjoyed it and I found some great stuff in it, so I guess a 4 star rating would be fair, but still feels more like a 3.5
Dolly Parton
5/5
I love Dolly, it's not the best country, and it's not the best singing and frankly doesn't excel at anything in particular. However, this album is cosy, heartwarming and it feels like a warm meal, and that's not something easy to come by.
Slipknot
4/5
Yeah fuck it I like this - I know it's not healthy but once in a while it won't kill me
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
Nah sorry Springsteen but this is not for me - I got bored of it very quickly.
Tim Buckley
5/5
I'm extremely pleasantly surprised by this - I did not know this guy but this was a fantastic album, with so many interesting things happening, musically, lyrically, vocally. This is my new thing.
Tim Buckley
3/5
This is my second Tim Buckley album in a row and wtf this doesn't even sound like the same artist. I guess kudos to him for re-inventing himself, I just wish he didn't.
2/5
PJ Harvey
2/5
ABBA
4/5
The Police
4/5
Love The Police, and I do like this album, but I can't say it's my favourite.
David Gray
4/5
Isn't this THE David Gray album? I guess it's as good as it's gonna get - still pretty good music, not too risky or particularly hard going, but it does have a certain beauty that I enjoyed.
Ms. Dynamite
4/5
This was so much better than I anticipated.
John Grant
3/5
Klaxons
2/5
This is good for the FIFA games loading screen, but I wouldn't sit and listen to it.
Rod Stewart was married to Stacy's Mom
Bob Marley & The Wailers
5/5
I'm trying to find a Bob Marley album I don't enjoy through and through - the search continues.
Motörhead
5/5
What's not to like?
John Lennon
2/5
I can see why people were angry at Yoko
M.I.A.
3/5
How is there two M.I.A albums here? Anyway I was mildly amused by it at times so I guess it wasn't so bad
The Cars
4/5
Not bad to be honest
Peter Gabriel
4/5
I guess I see it - it's weird but in a good way. Not quite a 5 star album in my opinion but 4 seems unfair too.. wish I could do 4.5
Fela Kuti
5/5
This works in so many levels - it's fun, artistic, it's political, it works as background music but you can also get lost in it's complexity. Simply great
The Go-Betweens
3/5
It's hard to judge - in one hand they are so meh that they fall perfectly between a 0 and a 5. In the other hand they are The Go-betweens and they went between, so they fulfilled their purpose and that would be a 5 stars. But if they get 5 stars they won't be in between and therefore will get a 2.5 score ... My head hurts
Calexico
4/5
This looked SO bad on paper, but it works quite well surprisingly - it's the kind of music I was hoping for in this list.
Tears For Fears
5/5
This was so good - I feel like Tears For Fears are slightly underrated
Sonic Youth
3/5
I'm a bit on the fence on this one - it's kinda fun to listen to but also kinda poorly performed, although I feel like if it was well performed it would lose the fun aspect. I don't know man, I'll give it a 3 and let future me decide on this one
