James Brown Live At The Apollo
James BrownFantastic album, James Brown was an incredible musician and this really made me feel like I was seeing this live performance. If anything I found it too short.
Fantastic album, James Brown was an incredible musician and this really made me feel like I was seeing this live performance. If anything I found it too short.
It's just alright until you hit Layla then it becomes amazing for a bit then goes back to just alright.
This is so 90s - conceptually it's all over the place. I'm assuming these are the kind of people that wanted Esperanto to be a thing. It's entertaining enough musically at times so I'll give it 2 stars.
Is this the unreleased album from the guy in 'Peep Show'?
Pretty good - consistently fun to listen to, it had me trapped in the rhythm for most of it. Consistently fun to listen to
Very good
Fantastic album. Bowie is weird in a very special way
Iconic album, incredible start but unfortunately goes downhill from there. Love the Beatles but this isn't my favourite album from them.
Good - overall enjoyable but I found it a bit forgettable
Not a huge fan, lacks a theme. Some songs are good but not very consistent
That was surprisingly good - engaging, energetic and full of pretty good vocals. It doesn't age fantastically as the singing style is very much a sign of its time and now it just sounds a bit tacky. Still one of the best albums of its kind tho.
Such a peaceful listen. Some fantastic songs and a very unique style.
So chill, I was literally caught in terrible traffic and still felt super calm. Great stuff
Amazing.
Very interesting, I'm not a huge fan of the main vocalist voice but it's not really the protagonist of the album either so it's not a huge problem.
Absolutely incredible - so epic and energising, I don't think I can go back to listen to Metallica without an orchestra now.
I've listened to this album so many times. I'm not even a huge Dire Straits fan but this album is such a pleasure to listen to all round.
Pretty terrible, it's like Pink Floyd at their most artsy but they don't really know how to play instruments or sing. Really not a fan
Surprisingly good - I was expecting something pretentious and artsy but it's a lot more honest than I expected.
I enjoyed it all the way, it's a bit dated but it still sounds good. Her voice is beautiful and unique.
I assume they didn't have money to pay for a vocalist. There's a song that starts with the sound of breaking glass and I would much rather every song had that instead of vocals. Absolutely terrible. 2 stars for the band cause they actually know how to play instruments.
Great album, very chill and enjoyable. I'd give 5 starts but I know they can do so much better and I also hate the fucking eagles man.
My problem with the Beatles is that I find them comforting so I'll eat anything they do. It's like playing a silly sitcom like friends when you don't feel like watching something heavier.
I can't really properly score it having listened to it only once if I'm being honest. I feel like I'm missing so much..
Biggie has this incredible way of being extremely real, such a good storyteller. There's a few songs that really lets him down as they're quite sexist and it makes it hard to relate.
Fantastic album, James Brown was an incredible musician and this really made me feel like I was seeing this live performance. If anything I found it too short.
I'm surprised about how much I liked this as it's not really my style but I really enjoyed it. Improved version of Arctic monkeys in my opinion. Would listen to it again
It was alright, found it pretty unremarkable - definitely didn't need a 2nd part.
Really good - pretty consistent in style and theme without feeling repetitive and boring.
Absolutely great - every song was remarkable. I had heard of Stills just from Crosby, Stills & Nash but never actually listened to him separately. Will definitely add to my favourites and listen to it again.
I'm a bit disappointed with myself for not liking this more. I quite like The Who and this album certainly has great tunes, but I somehow didn't tune into the story and after a while it was a drag. I must be missing something
Always loved Supertramp and 'Dreamer' was one of my favourite songs as a kid so I enjoyed this a lot.
WTF - why do I like this?
Good stuff - some great tunes and a general energising feeling.
A problem I often have with these less-known UK bands is that they often sound like a knock-off of a famous band. I don't think that happens with this album, they have their own sound and it's absolutely great. Will listen again and add to my favourites.
This album feels like they've done all the styles that they could think of with the hope that some will stick - annoyingly it kinda works. Some of it is good and some of it isn't so when I look at it as a whole piece it's a bit average. If I could give it 2.5 stars I would.
Hard to say anything bad about this, it's jazz
Nice voice and good singing for a live album, so doing this on one go seems meritable. It does make me wonder wether there'll be more albums in other languages too or this is just a one-off because it's french and stuff in french is automatically art or something.
Pretty awesome - strong sound and something feels very unique about it.
That was a nice discovery - I really enjoyed that. It sounds to me like Indie should sound like.
What in the Yoko Ono is this? I'm not against a bit of psychedelic sound in the right dose but that was definitely too much.
It's hard to put oneself in the context of hip-hop of 40 years ago, knowing how far Run D.M.C came after this. Having said that, I really appreciate how this is them pretty much stripped to their essence, and I really like the anger and vindictive spirit of this album, and the sort of "pulp" sound is something that really hits the spot for me. In summary, even the songs that aren't as good have me engaged and entertained so it pretty much has all I ask for in a hip-hop album.
It's the sound of the 60s - I find it somewhat soothing.
My father in law sadly passed away after a motorcycle accident the day before I got this album in this app. I could not bring myself to listen to it. I was going to tell him about this app, cause we loved talking about music and he wanted to expand his horizons so I thought he'd love this. 5 starts from him.
I liked the style, but somehow I found it a bit boring
I don't really know why but it wasn't what I was expecting - it wasn't bad tho
I can't listen to more than 30 seconds of this without getting PTSD flashbacks from when my mum would drag me to a shopping centre. I'm definitely not putting myself through 2 whole hours of this.
Absolutely not
Meh
Great discovery - they might not be a new favourite but I'd listen to it again. The album cover needs work tho
This is their best work in my opinion - they do a great job of making you feel deep emotions
Not bad at all - I find that they're charismatic enough for me to tolerate the more artsy bits that I'd normally find irritating
I'm not a huge Michael Jackson fan but I guess this is as good as it gets
Worth listening to in my opinion - feels honest and real without being pretentious.
I feel like a fraud for not liking this more - I really enjoyed most of the songs and he's undeniably a lyric genius. However, as an album I found it heavy and hard to listen to in one sitting. Also some very shrill harmonica playing that just wasn't very pleasant and not very musically interesting in my opinion.
Another pleasant surprise from this app - weird at times but in a way that I find enjoyable. Great energy and tone, overall really good.
It's just alright until you hit Layla then it becomes amazing for a bit then goes back to just alright.
Absolutely fantastic - I didn't know how much I liked Peter Frampton until I got this album on the app, really enjoyed it.
That was pretty awesome
I feel like this album for me is in the fine line between sort of catchy and terribly boring. It kept getting my interest and losing it all the time. I think overall was good tho
This was so incredibly harmless that I don't know what to rate it. I guess someone needs to do background music for garden centers
I was not expecting to like this at all - when it started I instantly thought it would be extremely indulgent and pretentious for no reason and I was more than ready to give it up after the first minute. But I quickly realised that there was a story behind it all, a message of uncertainty and transition that I found extremely moving.
I am so disappointed with this album, I genuinely thought I liked The Verve but that was so dull.
Fuck no
My expectations for this album were relatively low, I thought T-rex was a bit of a one-hit-wonder. At first I thought my expectations were correct but it won me over with that sort of glam-like sound that just puts me in a good mood.
Some interesting stuff here but I never really got into it.
It took me a bit of time to get into it, mainly because I feel like I was overthinking it and it's also not quite my style. I'm not a huge fan of his voice but the production is impeccable and it's very interesting musically. Overall I think it's a good album.
Stills is a true artisan - it may not be the most exciting album but it's crafted very carefully.
Beastie Boys always deliver - incredible energy
I got this straight after a Beastie Boys album and the contrast is really striking. This album was really good though, the beats are just incredible and the lyrics are pretty good.
This guy is absolutely brilliant, you can encapsulate this album into a category of its own. Absolutely timeless
It's a hit and a miss for me. I guess that's the risk of going experimental. Some stuff in this album I found overwhelmingly beautiful and some other parts were just overwhelming.
As iconic as it may be, I'm not a huge fan.
I didn't know this band before - I was quite disappointed to learn that they're dudes if I'm honest. That said, it's a pretty good album - although the vocals are not what I'd normally like, it creates a sort of unsettling atmosphere that reminds of the darker parts of the Rolling Stones. It also achieves a very distinctive sound with a relatively simple production which I think is very valuable
I liked it, but I was expecting more - it felt very dated and I found it lacking in pace.
Really didn't like it - it feels like it was designed to play in a very crowded fancy club that people go to just to say they've been. Not a fan
This is an exceptional album - her voice is full of character and flawless in the execution, but it's the production that makes this feel relatively fresh despite being a genre that's been done to death.
I absolutely loved every minute of it - I can't disagree more with these extremely dated values, and I doubt I'd ever find myself in their shoes, but the feelings are just very real, and that's something I do relate with.
Bowie just takes you to places you never thought you'd ever go and that's just beautiful. Listening to Bowie songs here and there is good, but listening to a whole album is just an incredible experience.
This is not really what I would normally listen to and subsequently I'm not a huge fan. That said, I can appreciate that this is good stuff - it does manage to put you in a good mood.
This was such a contrast from the previous kinks album I got a few weeks ago - that was so empty and just plain boring, I was very disappointed. This was interesting in all ways.
Some interesting stuff there, I was almost expecting to get bored to death and I didn't really. I gave the last Elvis Costello album 2 stars and this was just a bit better so there you go.
I didn't hate it, but I also didn't like it. Overall just makes me feel like they're so tired and I think they should've taken a nap instead of recording an album
I thoroughly enjoy listening to Bowie, and I found with this album that's not his characteristic voice and singing style that makes him the artist I love. I could hear him in every track whether he was singing or not and I think that says a lot about him as an artist. He's unmistakable.
I quite like country, and this folk-like sound, with its rough-and-ready vocals and its personality does hit the spot for me.
Proper ass-kicking punk - I wasn't too sure about it in the beginning but the longer I listen the more I like it
I forgot how fucking dark and weird this guy use to be
I found this album very puzzling. It ticks all the boxes to be the kind of album I enjoy, yet I could not wait for it to be done. Even the crowd attending the concert sounds only mildly enthusiastic in the beginning and slowly looses interest throughout. I'm glad I listened to it before I died cause now I know that you can also do good music and somehow be absolutely terrible.
So good
Feels a bit like a halfway house between Bowie and ELO - and although I love both, I'd say the sum of the two is not equally good as them separately. I still found it very enjoyable and would listen to it again so I think 4 stars does it justice
What a surprising one - the production is so fresh and innovative without being purposefully obnoxious and irritating. I'll definitely add this to my favourites
Pretty good stuff - I feel like they had more freedom as artists by this point and had the chance to do something edgier. My biggest problem with them is that I struggle to understand what they say, so a lot of the lyrics are missed on me.
Everything about this album sounds right to me - only flaw, it's too short
Good ambience music, the kind of chill-out bar vibes. I guess it's not really designed to pay a huge amount of attention to it so I just kind of left it as background noise and thought about my own stuff - once I did that I actually enjoyed it.
This is the one male stereotype I allow myself to have - fucking love this shit
So strangely good
I thought it sounded very aged, I can imagine people listening to this at the time it was released (which wasn't even that long ago) and convincing myself this was good for the time. Then I realised that so many other albums in this list stand the test of time and manage to be worth listening to after 50+ years and suddenly this album went down the drain for me.
I love every bit of this album - I find Paul Simon weird enough to be interesting without being pendantic and that is a very fine balance
This album makes no sense in terms of theme. Musically it's just a product of the end of the 90s where we were so use to singers not singing that when someone sang relatively ok we worshipped them. Beyonce has a terrific voice, but the endles and aimless runs are insufferable
I found this a bit too "formula". Happy song - Sad song - rocky song - repeat. Feels very generic.
Delivers what it promises. I feel like in the 80s it was frowned upon when a metal singer was actually good at singing so it feels like they actively sing like shit. Good songs, poor execution - the sign of the 80s metal
Not bad but feels like it was done before and better.
This was weird - like purposefully weird, which is the worst kind cause it feels a bit forced and it really loses points on the lyrics. However the sound did get me interested, it's very 90s but it has it's own twist to it and I do enjoy that. Also it would really benefit from trimming some songs, 1h20m is definitely too long for an album like this.
I don't think the concept of this album deserves a whole hour to be fully understood to be honest. Other than that it is actually entertaining enough and it made me smile a few times with its silliness which I actually appreciate.
It's hard to listen to this album outside its context - Bowie knew he was dying and turned it into a beautiful album. 'Lazarus' and 'I can't give everything away' are just incredible.
This is so 90s - conceptually it's all over the place. I'm assuming these are the kind of people that wanted Esperanto to be a thing. It's entertaining enough musically at times so I'll give it 2 stars.
There's maybe a couple of songs here I would listen to again - but I would most definitely do it to impress my more hipstery friends. For the most part this album is an aimles walk
Lou Reed is a weird one for me - I feel like he just doesn't want to sing and just kinda talks, but somehow I also think he pulls it off. This album is his peak in my opinion, but even at his best I find some of his stuff too irritating to give him 5 stars so he's getting 4 (of which 3 belong to Bowie).
I'm always torn by Elvis. In one hand I feel like he's not original enough or even talented to be as big as he was, he didn't write any of the songs and his music is pure formula. But in the other hand his charisma is just so remarkable that I always end up dancing around and enjoying myself with his music, which in essence just means I guess I like this.
Fucking love the doors - the eerie feeling with the use of the organ, the vampire-like persona of Jim Morrison, everything in this album seems to work for me.
I'm pleasantly surprised - it's an interesting sound and the concept is not bad, although it doesn't feel like something that you need to pay extreme attention to it. Makes good running music
Sam Cooke is just amazing - this album made me feel like I was there.
I'm pleasantly surprised by this, it has some energy and sounds unique enough to merit 4 stars. Especially considering that by this point feels like everything has been already done. As a whole album it's pretty consistent without becoming boring.
Where has this been hidden? This is exactly why I started using this app. Amazing stuff
Hard to fault Taylor Swift to be honest - this album has everything a pop album needs executed very effectively and that's probably her best quality, being able to always do what she does and do it well.
I don't know if it is the fact that I've not been able to properly listen to music in a while or if Pulp is just growing on me as I get older but I really thoroughly enjoyed this album.
Fantastic album
Nice enough to listen to, but a little boring at times. Some songs are just very irrelevant and it makes me feel like I should be done half way through the album. The orchestration is cool but it kinda feels like a gimmick.
This is a really good folky/psychedelic rock album, a really chill vibe that feels very timeless.
This is like listening to the "you wouldn't steal a car..." Anti-piracy add on DVDs for a whole hour. No thanks, I did about 20 minutes and gave up.
This is probably one of my favourite Stones albums - extremely characteristic sound, with their 'bad boy' attitude complete contrasting with The Beatles. Masterpiece
Is this the unreleased album from the guy in 'Peep Show'?
It's not bad, but it's a bit weak in both lyrics and vocals and it just feels unoriginal. It's still pleasant and easy-listening
I feel like I'm missing something here. I found this pretty boring and I don't really know if it's that I just don't understand it or if it just is.
Amazing album for working, cleaning or just generally doing boring tasks - it's groovy, engaging and light, like a good 80's synth pop album should be.
It starts off ok with some fun ska-type stuff, but about half way it seems to loose the plot and becomes utter nonsense. It's a weird one but I don't fully hate it.
Weird
First half of the album is just same old same old, 80s synth stuff as expected. The second half tho goes towards a more new wave sort of direction and I loved it. It has a kinda Vangelis sound that I really enjoyed. Unfortunately half the album being good and half being bad averages out on a mediocre note.
Aside from American Pie and a few highlights the rest of the album is pretty weak. In terms of American singer-songwriters he's not my favourite.
I've never been so irritated in my entire life
It's either boring or irritating. Some listenable tracks but they don't redeem the album.
Outstanding work in my opinion, everything in this album seems to work.
This feels like going to a pub and there's a band playing - you didn't go there to see them but there they are. At first it's like, alright nice some music would be cool, but half an hour into the gig you've had enough.
I feel like this kind of style is always a hit or a miss. In this case is a hit
Nah not a fan - I just don't get it
Sounds like the rolling stones, so it's pretty good.
This album is heavy and hard to listen to, not only because of the grief theme throughout it but also because it's indulgent and slow which in turns makes it a bit boring. It certainly sounds like a hard painfull process that he went through and I can't deny that it makes the album have a certain gravitas. But aside from the sadness I feel like there's not a lot more going on here and it makes it a bit plain in my opinion.
Incredible work, I didn't think I liked Coldplay this much but everything in this album ties together extremely nicely. Great stuff
I always think I hate the artsy vibe and the whole musical poet thing that always feels kinda empty to me. But somehow Joni Mitchell does not feel empty, but more or less the opposite, like she's not saying all she could and I love that.
As per usual with Brian Eno - interesting stuff but not always in a good way
Weird, but kinda fun.
This wasn't too bad, but just I can't shake the feeling that this is just a 2pac wannabe
I don't know what I just listened to and I don't know why I like it.
The most irritating voice of the 90s that somehow made it work. My respects for pulling it but not something I particularly enjoy
Might be a controversial opinion, but I'm not too keen on this album - I feel like they found one sound and exploited it too much. Annoyingly it is a sound that works well in good measure, which. Explains the hits that just by being known save the experience of the album.
Absolutely incredible, very powerful
Fantastic album - I feel like it really represents well it's concept.
This is probably one of my favourite Beatles albums - I feel like this represents their real sound to me. I just wish they didn't do Run For Your Life
This is so out of style right now that's actually back - I'd give it 5 stars if it wasn't because half the songs sounded like failed attempts of tainted love
I loved this - specially in the context of 90s music this is absolutely incredible
This is such a good album - it's just so energetic and playful.
That was a lot better than I expected - a bit repetitive and self-indulgent but that's what indie is I guess.
Good selection of songs but overall uninteresting to me if I'm honest.
Not terrible, just feels a bit overdone. I feel like it belongs in a movie set in the 60s playing over some generic 60s footage
I always forget how influencias was T.Rex in the 80s in Spain - This album is so familiar to me without being necessarily known
I mean, yeah, it's Thelonious Monk - potentially the most annoying name that you're most Hipster friend can ever pronounce. Annoyingly as well it's not bad, although it does play with that fine line of being genius Vs. Being a 5 year old discovering the piano makes funny noises.
Best blur album in my opinion
It started off ok and I thought I was going to like it, but after a couple of songs I couldn't really take anymore
This was fun
Interesting - I found it a little confusing at times, like he wasn't sure what direction to go to. The parts I got I liked tho.
I hate Electronica in general, but I found this one tolerable, even enjoyable at times
Before I started I felt like I didn't have time for it but I decided to give it a chance. I was so wrong - loved every bit of it - I'm almost annoyed at how good it was.
Outstanding
Most tracks feel like royalty-free music for YouTube videos, and the ones that don't sound generic are just obnoxiously annoying
Simply fantastic - there's a reason this is the sound we use to represent its time
How many stars can you dock for a horrible album cover? The sound is alright but felt pretty average
Incredible stuff
I'm a 90s kid I incapable of disliking this
This album was an absolute game changer, I first listened to it when I was a teenager and I feel like it gave me so much perspective and understanding of the world. The miseducation of Lauryn Hill was actually my own education
White boy blues
Not bad at all - great energy overall and the sound may not be massively special but still really enjoyable.
Not bad at all, but also not outstanding. A few highlights that bring it up to 4 stars but I have to admit it's a push.
Not a fan - a bit noisy and confusing
Early Beatles never disappoint
Absolutel genius
They certainly surfed my butthole and I can't say I hated it, didn't love it, but didn't hate it.
Love everything about this, the aesthetic, the sound, the lyrics, the voice. Absolutely everything about this is a 5/5
I hate saying that albums are "unique", sounds like it was terrible and it's the only compliment I can gather, it is not the case for this one - it's unique in the best sense of the word
Pleasantly surprised to be honest
The best Post-Punk albums in this list so far. Great energy.
As per usual with Smashing Pumpkins it just doesn't fully hit the spot for me - there's some pretty good music in there and the energy overall is fantastic, but somehow his voice just takes me straight out of the zone.
Can't fault it
I absolutely loved this - the writing is fantastic and the piano arrangements are just so bold and beautiful
One of my favourite albums of all time, so not much I can say that's not been said already.
Hard to keep pay attention to it to be honest - it doesn't sound horrible but it's a bit purposeful awkward
The sexiest album on the list so far
Absolutely amazing
It's good, but it feels a bit uncooked - if I listened to it blindly I would have said it's Queen Latifah
Interesting - felt quite timeless
I am somewhat disappointed - The Cure is one of those bands that I've not listened to too much and everyone keeps recommending, so I guess it's my own fault for not managing my expectations. However I do think I'm objective when I say I found this a bit underwhelming and maybe a bit shallow. Still a relatively pleasant listen tho so 3 stars sound fair
Pretty good consistently
That was so good
Very enjoyable overall - some good song-writting and interesting melodies. Maybe it didn't stand out enough to make it a fantastic album but if all stakes were perfect we wouldn't have hot-dogs 🤷
This is a great 90s album that definitely stands out in the musical context that is in, unfortunately it's affected by it and it feels dated still. I can't shake the image of my mum cleaning around with this in the background and being annoyed to death about the "rubbish" she was listening to, so can't give it the 5th star
Great album - docked one star for "Indian Sunset" cause wtf was that
Good working music but otherwise fairly unisteresting
Certainly unique, but not always in a good way.
Perhaps not my favourite Bowie album so far, feels a bit less inspired than others. Still an incredible album so it's still getting 5 stars
Fuck I really needed this - It's very much a stoner rock vibe before stoner rock was really a thing. I really enjoyed it when I was listening to it and I will probably listen to it again, but I have to admit it's not particularly remarkable so I feel like I can't give it 5 stars
When did clubs stop playing this?? It's literally designed for dancing!
This is a bit of an interesting find in this list - it's weird, but in the same mesmerising way twin peaks is. There's a structure, and it experiments over the established and does it well
I need to grow up and just admit I like Neil Young. It's time for me to start going to bed at a reasonable time and learn a bit about gardening.
I've definitely heard most of this before in the pre-recorded tunes in my parents old Yamaha keyboard - I can't say I hate it, it's just generic 80s synth pop
I think this is the first Punk album in this list I actually enjoyed listening to. It's energetic and infuriating in the best way possible. If I was to fault it on anything I'd say it's a bit all over the place in terms of theme
Great album
Incredible album - I can't fault it
Good old Dire Straits - never fantastic but never terrible. Not many bands can achieve this and I think that honours them
I'm an absolute sucker for The Ramones. They represent the epitome of punk - taking piss out of classic "low-quality" pop music while sounding practically indistinguishable from it. It may be subtle but it changes everything.
This was good - it's a bit strange and sort of repetitive at times, but somehow it kinda works. Kinda like videogame music, it just really seems to suit for just walking/running or working. I really liked it
New Zealand's Taylor Swift? It's not bad, but it's feels done to death. So it's really downside is that because I feel like I've already listened to everything it looses my attention and gets a bit boring. The vocals are surprisingly good, but she still falls into that trend of making a baby-ish voice and that's a real shame cause it taints it.
Thoroughly enjoyed it - sounds incredible, it's fun but still gives you something to think about. One of the best reggae albums I've heard and certainly the best one in this list so far...
I'm surprised to see anything in Spanish in this list, but that said I'm not surprised that it's Manu Chao. I've never been a big fun, mainly because although it seems to represent an ideology of freedom fighters and seems to have some important substance behind, it's actually doing this fight more harm than good. This kind of attitude is the reason Spanish left-winged parties aren't taking seriously, the culture of the weed-smoking, hippie-ish and artsy that gets completely lost in the arts themselves rather than doing anything. This is what they did to punk in Spain, and it feels like it was purposefully orchestrated to make the remainder of strong-left representatives an absolute joke. Rant over, this isn't bad - it's catchy and fun, I just wish I could see it as just that.
I can't score this objectively - this was one of the albums that got me into hip-hop when I was young, and Nas was an absolute reference.
I feel like this is almost too normal for Brian Eno - it's his first album so I guess he didn't have as much artistic freedom as he would have wanted to. For any other album that would be a downside but in this case it's actually good
Sooo groovy - I was in a fantastic mood for the rest of the day, no traffic jams would annoy me and that is priceless
Incredible as usual - perhaps not his most remarkable album but still a fantastic one
