I enjoyed every song on this record, however there are songs on other Zeppelin records that I certainly enjoy more. I'm torn between giving this a 3 or a 4. I think my actual ranking is a 3.5. Given that 3.5 isn't an option though, I'll round that up to a 4. It may not be my favorite, but it is incredibly good for a debut album.
I've been meaning to listen to this album for a while. Over the years, I have heard such high praise for it and was quite excited going in to it. After listening, however, it didn't live up to my expectations. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I didn't know anything about it going in. It is still a fantastic album, but not the perfect 10/10 I expected it to be. I'll be nice and give it a 4/5.
I have a fairly controversial opinion. I think the White Album is the Beatles' most overrated album. Don't get me wrong, there are some fantastic songs on here. If every song on this album was on the same caliber as Blackbird, it would be a 5/5 easily. However, there's also sooo much filler here. Songs like Why Don't We Do It In The Road never needed to exist. For that reason, it's a 3.
P.S.
I am Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da's biggest defender. People who hate Paul's "Granny music" just hate fun. Y'all need more whimsy in your lives.
These songs were very catchy, and I love this style of music. I added most of the songs to my library, so I can definitely say this was an album I enjoyed.
With that being said, however, I don't really understand it's inclusion on this list. Was it a really influential album during it's time? My opinion is biased since I wasn't alive when it was released; but there's nothing in here that really sounds unique to me. After all, how influential could this band have been if this is my first time ever hearing about them? I don't know, is that a bad position to have?
In conclusion, I liked it, but I also think I could have died without hearing it and I wouldn't be missing out on anything. So it's a 3/5.
It's an album full of very basic, standard rock songs. There's nothing on here that really pushes the bar. And sometimes I like listening to basic rock music and that's okay! They might be a little vanilla, but goddamn if the songs ain't catchy.
I do wish there was more variety in the lyrics. I don't want this to sound prudish, I don't have a problem with songs being about sex. I do have a bit of a problem when almost ALL of the songs are about that. It's hard to knock the band for that because songs about love, sex, and breakups have been overdone by nearly artist since the beginning of time. But it does get a little irritating when a band does the same topic over and over without bringing anything new to it. Yet again though, the songs are so. goddamn. catchy.
It's soooo close to being a 4 for me. I give it a 3.8/5.
Let's say, hypothetically, that I can't speak a single word in English. And I hear this album. Judging this album by the music and only the music, I'd give it a 3. Now, as a person who *does* speak English: the lyrics take this album down to a 1. On top of that, knowing that Kanye West is a literal fucking nazi? I'd give it a 0 if I could.
I just love this style of music, so it's hard to give it anything below a 4. It's not a perfect 5 because there isn't really anything here that absolutely "wowed" me, and the last track went on a bit too long for my tastes. But other than that, the songs on here are really good and I think they'll grow on me the more I listen.
On some songs, her voice reminds me of Phoebe from Friends. On others, it sounds like Yoko Ono.
Ok, mean jokes aside, usually I'm all for folky anti-war songs; but something about the sound of this just isn't for me. It sounds like she's got a decent voice hidden somewhere in there, but the melodies and the stylistic choices she makes ruin it. The lyrics don't stand out to me either. I do like the instrumentation on some tracks. My favorite song was Hanging In The Wire, but I didn't like it enough to find it playlist worthy. 2/5.
I don't think I've ever been so sad to hear an album end before. This was absolutely incredible. Finding stuff like this is exactly why I'm doing this project. 5/5 hands down.
Knowing everything I know about my personal music tastes, it feels like I *should* hate this album. And I admit that there are moments here where this album is a tough listen (particularly with Patti's vocals). But there's just something about it that keeps drawing me in. I think this will grow on me a lot in the future. 4/5.
I love discovering new artists and exploring new genres. This album is both for me, and what a lovely discovery it is. It was a great vibe to start my morning with. I see in other reviews that some disliked the Rolling Stones and the Doors covers. However, I am potentially the only person on this website who isn't familiar with the original version of either of those songs. So it's suffice to say that the covers didn't bother me. 5/5.
I'm usually a big Bob Dylan fan, so I was excited to see this today. It's one of the few Dylan albums that I hadn't listened to before starting this project. Imagine my surprise when I press play and I am greeted with potentially the worst opening track I've heard in my life. To be fair, things did get better after that, and I added quite a few songs to my library. Even with that, though, none of these songs are anywhere close to the caliber that I've come to expect from Dylan. In all actuality, this album is probably a 3/5 for being simply average. However, I'm giving it a 2 because of my sheer bitterness and disappointment.
I don’t think I've heard music by any other artists that have a sound even remotely similar to Gorillaz. Similar music probably does exist, but none of it has popped up on my radar.
Sometimes, Gorillaz's unique sound works REALLY well and I absolutely love them. On other songs, it sounds so bad that I seriously don't understand why this music is so popular.
I didn't know it was possible to have this many mixed feelings over an album before. Truly fascinating. 3/5 I guess?
Eh. It's alright. Just not my thing. 3/5.
Pretty standard rock/pop album. It's decent. Nothing really stands out except Champagne Supernova. What a fantastic song, and the perfect choice for a closing track.
3/5
I'm bisexual, but occasionally I'll have moments that make me think "huh, maybe I'm not attracted to men after all". Hearing the line "to inhale a beard" was one of those moments.
Anyway, not a bad album by any means. I definitely see the appeal. It's just not really my thing. I didn't mind listening to it, but I don't think I'd listen to it more than once. 3/5.
It's good. Somewhat average. Though Black Hole Sun is gonna be stuck in my head for days. 3/5
The negative reviews are all from people with no whimsy in their lives.
Was gonna give it a 2 but I think Slum King brought that down for me. Albums like this make me really want to buy the book so that I can read a little more about why it was included. Because why was this included?
"Hey! Female! Come here!", "My teen queen", "The drinks will flow and blood will spill and if the boys wanna fight you better let them", "Black magic woman, you've got a hole".
Name one woman who feels safe around you.
I quite liked the first two tracks, but then it quickly went down hill. Disappointing. 2/5.
I don’t understand how anyone could dislike disco. 5/5.
I'm somewhat confused about why this was included instead of Folklore. But I can't complain. This is my favorite Swift album.
This was the first time I listened to Evermore in full in quite a while. I almost forgot just how good it is. 5/5.
It's alright. Nothing that stands out. 3/5.
Really wanted to love this, because the music itself is perfectly fine. But I REALLY hate the singers voice. I saw another reviewer describe it as sounding like cookie monster and sadly that sums it up really well. Also some of the lyrics are kinda cringe. 3/5 I guess?
This is my second Bjork album this month, and honestly, I was dreading it going in. I didn't think I'd be in the mood for this today. However, I ended up enjoying it more than the last one. I still wouldn't call myself a Bjork "fan", per say. Her music still gets a little too experimental for my tastes. But there was still a handful of tracks I kinda enjoyed. 3.5/5.
This album is everything I hate about stereotypical men.
This was an interesting experience. Very camp. But I don't think I'd listen to it again. 3/5.
Was gonna give it a 2, but "twinkling cunt" made it loose a point. Dear god.
Basic ass straight white man music.
I assume that for the time period when this was made, this would be really impressive. And it is very catchy. There are some production things I don't love, but I think that's just a limitation of the technology at the time. I get what they were trying to go for. It would get a 3, however reading the other reviews talk about how he's a massive pedophile makes it lose a point.
Mostly a good album, but fuck the song Money for Nothing. "That little f*ggot" shut the fuck up. Weird Al did it better.
I liked the first half quite a bit. As for the second half, eh.
Unlike Eric Clapton as a person, there was nothing in this album that was offensively bad. It's all decent music, though there's nothing really groundbreaking here; not even Layla, the best track by far. Also, while each song is fine on an individual level, the full album is just feels soooo long. It's kind of a slog to get through.
Despite the overall global rating, seeing how high most of the top reviews were gave me a lot of hope for this album. A lot of reviewers were describing a style that sounded like something I'd love. Which in turn made listening to the actual album somewhat disappointing. There were a handful of songs I liked, but for the most part it wasn't really vibing with me. Sad, because it's so very obvious that the band members are pretty talented. Perhaps they have some other albums that I'd like more.
Previously, I was only familiar with the first two tracks, which are extremely nostalgic for me. I had high hopes going into this albumc, and oh boy it did not disappoint. I'm torn between giving it a 4 or a 5, but those first two songs are just so goddamn good so fuck it it's a 5.
First half made me think I would love it. But I got more and more disappointed as it went on. Would be a 3, but the homophobia and the entirety of 'Does Everyone Stare' makes it loose a point.
I can't bring myself to give this record anything less than a 3. The musicianship is just too good. But please know that the song "Friend Zone" almost ruined the entire album for me, which is why I didn't give it anything higher. "Friend Zone" is one of the worst examples of incel misogyny I've heard in a song in quite a while. I tried looking up more information about it, in hopes that Thundercat meant for the song to be satirical. I wish that people could reply to reviews so that someone could correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears as though Thundercat meant for the song to be sincere. Ew. I can't believe that no other reviews are calling this shit out. I will never understand how men are able to speak about women like this freely and still manage to get praised in a book listing the greatest albums of all time. At least some of the misogynistic themes on this list have the excuse of being old and from "a different time". This doesn't even have that. I've come across so much misogyny on this already, only 39 albums in, and each time it passes me off more than the last.
Did they intend for "I'll Be All Smiles Tonight" to sound so queer? I doubt it, given the time period, but I appreciated it nonetheless. Seriously, how could this song possibly be interpreted as straight? Someone help me out here!
Even stranger, that song is then followed by "Let Her Go, God Bless Her" which has such outdated (to the say least) lyrics that I felt like I was listening to a song from the 40s, not the 50s.
What the absolute hell is going on in "Katie Dear"?!
Same question with "My Brother's Will"! Does Sally have absolutely no choice in this matter? Jesus fucking Christ!
Don't even get me started on "Knoxville Girl".
How did this keep getting worse and worse? The first two songs were so nice, what happened?
She's the GOAT. What else can I say?
Oh, I am VERY much vibing 😎
Honestly I didn't hate this as much as I expected to. However. Even if I knew absolutely nothing about Marilyn Manson as a person, hearing a white guy say the n-word in the opening track alone is enough to make me give it one star.
Now THAT'S what I call country music!
The first few songs had me worried. I don't love the way the songs talk about women. But the rest of the album improved from that point, so I think I'll give it a slight pass. The song where Kendrick speaks from a woman's POV was interesting. 4/5.
P.S. I saw a review saying (to paraphrase) that when black hip-hop artists talk shit about women it's fine but when a white artist does it it's seen as misogynistic. Sweetie. I've heard white artists say MUCH worse things about women than Kendrick does here, especially on this list, and I see almost NO ONE else calling it out. But the second it's a black artist suddenly everyone is anti-misogyny.
We as humans should be calling out ALL misogyny when we see it. But if you only pretend to care about women so that you have an "excuse" to be racist, then you can fuck right off.
How could I possibly give less than five stars? It's Elton Fucking John!
My cat seemed to really like it.
I have a feeling I'm going to really like this.
I was right.
It's great musically! But lyrically there isn't much going on, which is the only thing stopping me from giving it a 5.
Bigmouth Strikes Again is fucking wild.
There are a few other... er, questionable lyrics as well.
But most of the album is good... I guess?
3/5
Very basic. But it's a good basic.
