It took a while for this one to make sense. At first listen, I gave this a 2, but revisiting a few months later with some other albums under my belt, I feel like there's more here than I thought. On the one hand, the production is quite interesting. Mick Ronson's work, along with Bowie, means tracks like Andy's Chest and Walk on the Wild Side feel alive, lush, and layered. I had to get Bowie before I could get this album, and I'm glad I took the time to come back. On the other hand, Lou's vocals leave a lot to be desired for me. I don't mind the laconic delivery or the spoken/sung form. It's at it's best when it contrasts with the lyrics - "Take a Walk on the Wild Side" says the man who sounds like he is lying in bed half asleep. And that happens quite a bit through the album. It's at it's worst when it drones and grates or seems to undercut the music itself (Make Up). As a piece of history I think this album is much better than it is as a piece of music I want to listen to today. That said, it's opened up and I an enjoying it more upon multiple listens.
