It's definitely an age thing but I really didn't like this much. Derivative and so bland- this has been done to death by so many other bands.
Started off promising, but it grew a bit tiresome by the halfway mark, around where some albums are still on the first track. I'm going with a slightly confused three stars.
pip album. some not bad.
I had given the gecs a few tries before with limited success, but this listen was a little bit more interesting. Honestly pretty catchy at times. 3.5/5
like this a lot more than i thought i would
This is a fun listen but I don't think deserves to be on the list
A creative and fun mixmash shitshow of an album. Compared to their debut this is moving away from the broader mix of contemporary trap and other influences and doubling down on music that was in the revivalism scene in 2023. There's plenty of hyperpop here, but also a lot of ska, nu-metal, and blown-out pop-punk. That combination sounds great on them, and I particularly like how much they lean into their ska influences. It's a more focused approach than on the debut, while still being completely ridiculous. And despite all the noise, this is surprisingly accessible. "Dumbest Girl Alive" and "757" could almost be late-career Ween songs. A creative, energetic, and surprisingly approachable mess.
only 26 minutes and I couldn't even force myself to finish. Bonus points for the TIE Fighter laster sound effect.
The sound of our time. Hyyyyperrrrrrrrrpop
The voice modulation was a bit grating. It is obviously not for me (hyperpop?), but it's not terrible. It has some interesting ideas, and the videos are just nuts. Someone said it was done by a bunch of ADHD kids, and quite frankly I'd have to agree. NEXT.
Extremely, extremely channel-surfing style music, but in a way that I can't tell if whether it's helpful or harmful for focusing. I now understand what people are talking about when they call something a "vocal stim." I had a pretty fun time with this as a one-off, but I dunno that I'm planning to put this into regular rotation any time soon. Little bit too hyper.
like having your nutsack removed
First Impressions: From the cover alone, I'm pretty sure I'm going to hate this. Post listening: I didn't hate this as much as I expected. I still didn't like it, but it wasn't complete garbage. I will avoid these guys in the future.
Short and stupid. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Kinda cool, kinda strange
What a ridiculous album! It's kind of impossible to classify because it's just kind of a collection of very different genres. The common threads are being energetic, loud, maximal, and childishly humorous. Otherwise, it sort of blends pop, punk, ska, and... gabba? Happy hardcore? One of those silly niche electronic subgenres that produced artists like Kid 606. But then it abruptly shifts to ska or rock or whatever the hell else they felt like. It's hard to take them totally seriously but I kind of love the wrecklessness of it all. Top track by far was "Doritos & Fritos" but I liked every track on some level. As a side note, apparently this music was featured on a Fox News show, which feels like it probably pissed off fans of both 100 gecs and Fox News.
Ok
It was ok.
Pleasantly surprised. This was so much better than my first interaction with the group. Will listen again.
Perhaps not as silly or shocking as 1000 gecs, but I think their attempt at parodying 90s and 2000s rock music allows the duo to shine musically, as there are some incredibly catchy and solid hooks, as if some of these songs could have been lesser hits in their respective genre. That is, until you dig into the lyrics, which very rarely are serious or deep, and if they are, you argue with yourself on if they are doing it ironically or not. What is known is that this is a step in a direction of making extremely solid, albeit niche, songs that cater perfectly to Gen Z and younger's deteriorating attention span, and from what this album portrays, building it back up again after the hyper and distracted first album. Some of the songs don't work for me, and I still don't appreciate my ear drums being ruptured by tracks like Billy Knows Jamie, but I think I officially consider myself a 100 gecs fan.
I quite liked this in an upbeat mad pop way
Oh man, 100 gecs. I listened to this album somewhat close to the time that it came out. I seem to remember listening to it on my way to a therapist appointment. I don't know why, but thinking about this album gives me a visual of that specific parking garage. I remember having pretty high hopes for this album based on what I'd read about it, but I don't think it landed with me. I can't remember any specific songs, but I'm sure the overall sound and vibe will come back to me once I fire this up. Oof, yeah, this album just isn't for me. I respect the energy and the way they use this jumbled chaos to create their sound, but this just isn't something I enjoy listening to. I believe that this chaotic sound is supposed to be representative of the general anxiety of life today, and while 100 gecs hits that mark square on, I find it really unpleasant to listen to. I do think that this duo has quite a bit to say in their lyrics, and they find funny and clever ways to say it, but it's just a little too all over the place for me. I think when I first listened to this album, I expected something along the lines of Crystal Castles or Sleigh Bells, but this album is definitely not either of those things. I appreciate the artistry here, but this album is not for me.
I was honestly expecting much worse, like I was expecting to really cringe and I did cringe but only a little. It sounds like the kinda thing gamers listen to as they fail to grasp a life outside mum’s basement. That being said I actually DO think it deserves its place on the list and I enjoyed it as something truly unique. And come on it’s less than half an hour it’s not life ruining. It’s like I got my tooth removed is one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard but Doritos and Fritos (for a song named Doritos and Fritos) is surprisingly very good. Hollywood baby is great and frog on the floor was genuinely very interesting. The bad moments drag it to a 2/5
I could have sworn that I heard this album a couple of years ago thanks to 1001… but apparently not. My mind’s playing tricks on me.
I ärlighetens namn så var det här inget vidare. Fanns väl någon lyssningsbar låt och ett litet plus är att skivan var väldigt kort.
A lot of unpleasant noise and blips of talent and melody
Variedad de ritmos, pasando desde algo de hardcore a hip-hop, a temas algo más calmados. Diferente y disperso. Distinto a lo que se suele escuchar. Algo motivador.
Oh so I can't finish one song.... the beat for the first song was KINDA fun but then like jesus this is horrible. are you guys not taking this seriously? who the hell was this made for? testing to see if people are actually deaf because i would turn this off in a HEARTBEAt.
Whoever said you can't judge a <> by its cover was clearly an idiot. This one is perfect. Oh! Would the user who submitted this please send me their address, I have something for you that I'll just quickly leave on your front porch - just make sure to wear your best shoes to the porch when the bell rings! JFC - you all have lost the plot. 0/10 IMO: Belonged in the book? gtfo
Allright, I'm getting old, I get it!
I'm so glad to see this album on this list. I remember listening to it when it first came out. I would listen almost every day, rolling the windows down and turning the stereo up as loud as possible and jamming out. This album isn't that deep and that's ok. Everything doesn't need to be multi-layered and meta. They do have some points to be made and there's definitely some commentary about society today, but they also make it in jest and poke fun of it in a not so serious way. It's definitely not for everyone and I can understand why people won't like it, but I love it and I'm glad I get to listen to it again!
I’m not the target demographic for this— or maybe I am? as a transfemme on estrogen, — I just don’t really care much for hyperpop but this album was consistently diverse, clearly a very creative and adventurous album that didn’t take long for me to get into it still isn’t an album I *looove*, but I sure did enjoy the heck out of this - 8/10
Great lyrics and great energy. Nice choice
I've listened to 1167 albums & this is definitely in the bottom 30.
Sometimes I forget how pleasant it is to listen to something so refreshing (even when hypercharged with samples and references). It will not become one of my favourite albums, and maybe I don't even give another of their albums a chance, since electronic music is not exactly the kind I love. However, the enjoyment of discovering new and creative stuff resonates a lot with me.
I enjoyed the modern production style and general quirkiness that shows a lot of imagination, which is commendable. But at times this makes it, shall we say, a challenging listen.
Wow! That was fun, thank you!
Slightly painful to listen to, but I also admire them for the work they have put into this mess of commercial adjacent work, which shouldn't sell any records. It is a bit too art school, but has a good sense of humour. Noisy blaring pop
All the stale baby boomers hating on the gecs, but I bet if your precious Beatles were still around, they'd love this shit!
Nicely upbeat. Proof you can have fun while not stressing too much
Hyperpop, pop punk, electronic rock, ska, nu metal. Menudo popurrí. Ni fu ni fa.
Hyperpop, pop punk, electronic rock, ska, nu metal. No,nonono, nonono.
loved the randomness
The production is just wonderful. The songwriting is original and unique. There is a lot of range instrumentally, but not so much emotionally. It’s all upbeat and rarely delves into anything slower. Otherwise, I had a real good time listening. 4/5
Not really sure what to make of this, but I enjoyed the heck out of it.
I am now a fan of hyper-pop - just in time for it to be pronounced DOA by the artists who created it. Makes sense. I am old. I really loved the maximalist feel of all of these tracks. I will be listening to this album over and over again. Excellent modern submission, faithful listener.
I'm too old for this bullshit.
The 1/5 review currently topping this section is hilariously phrased, I gotta give credit to its writer here. Out of caution, I would just take out the quotation marks around the word *trauma*. Beyond the heaps of parodic or tongue-in-cheek fun that 100 gecs elicits for many open-minded listeners out there, you also need to understand their hyperpop / glitchcore thing as a symptom triggered by a deeply sick society -- one that routinely shits on its children if they ever take the chance to assert themselves far away from normative codes. It's all over the news, wordvomited by hacks and media pundits taking advantage of the rotten system to make a buck while pointing fingers at innocent people. Which is why I also see 100 gecs's absurdist artistry as a natural and paradoxically sound reaction to this sort of sheer insanity, condoned everywhere you look by the people that are supposedly in charge. Yeah, I know... It sounds as if recent news make me see things in 100 gecs that they never thought of themselves. It's a take that may sound far-fetched, and also awfully serious for such nonsensical music. Yet consider the following lyrics from "757": "Somebody's making money on my problems / The way that you're talking, you'd better wear a condom / I smell cowards and sons of a bitch / Everything quick, all smells like shit" There's a couple of other innuendoes like that in the album -- see the awesome nineties hip hop-influenced "The Most Wanted Person In The United States", for instance. Aren't trans folks and other people living in the fringe areas of US culture seen as criminals these days? Those innuendoes must indeed be understood in a specifically American context, and as seen from the vantage point of September 2025, they now subtly suggest some artists will never cry for the Charlie Kirks of this sick, sad world (and this for all the good reasons). This is the wordvomit I referred to earlier, and provocative art is *always* the right answer to those woes, not violence enacted on an individual. If Charlie Kirk's murderer had discovered 100 gecs and become a hardcore fan of theirs (given what we already know from his background, it's highly improbable he even knew who they were), chances are he would never had done what he did. And why? Because he would have become too busy spending time on things that felt good for him, while channeling his everyday frustrations into something that actually matters. Art. Music. Non-toxic transgression. Open-mindedness. Genuine self-confidence. All things that neither Kirk nor his assassin fully understood in their lives, very ironically. I'm 100% serious here. Besides, provocative art also reveals old farts for who they truly are. Case in point, the 1/5 review still topping this section as of today. Yep, that review has a grain of truth to it, sure... But it's also kind of hilarious how it is making its edgelord writer show their true colors. It's that "old man yells at clouds" mentality, all over again. When this person discovered Sepultura (their favorite act in the original list), rebellion was in the air, I imagine. But of course, it's impossible for this user to recognize how provocation can take on many other forms in the 2020s. The whiffs of rebellion have now become stale, even rarefied, when you read that supposedly "fun" review.. All that's left is a mindset deeply entrenched in the past. I think "OK Boomer" is now being slowly written in capital letters on someone's forehead, and ironically, that person is not even aware of it. Enjoy your retirement party, girl! It's probably gratuitous to use this space normally devoted to an assessment of the second 100 gecs album to rant against a user know for their own gratuitous takedowns in this generator. But in a sense, I think that sort of digression is in keeping with the overall spirit of *10,000 gecs*, which flips the bird at the very notions of conventions and decorum through its exhilarating sonic mess. Explosive opener "The Dumbest Girl Alive" will tell it better than I can ever do: "Text, text, text, text / Like you tryna start a fight". There are also levels of self-irony that many grumblers from my own Gen-X generation have lost track of for decades now : "If you think I'm stupid now / You should see me when I'm high / And I'm smarter than I look / I'm the dumbest girl alive". Or this: "I've got lightning in my veins / Walk around like Frankenstein / I did science on my face / I'm the dumbest girl alive". Long story short, those sorts of downright laugh-out-loud lines get me every f*cking time. But beyond the jokes, they also prove Dylan Brady and Laura Less' self-reflective sensibility and awareness of how their "freak" roles are challenging the rest of society. Which makes their supposed "nonsense" actually topical, in the best sense of the word. Of course, those lyrics would amount to nothing if the music wasn't so exhilarating as well. In that regard, the first three bops ("The Dumbest Girl Alive", "757" and "Hollywood Baby") are a slap in the face for me. Mixing everything from nü-metal to 8-bit chiptune to pop punk to ska in a pot-pourri annihilating whatever line you may initially draw to separate supposedly "good" and "bad" taste, 100 gecs make such conceptual endeavors feel fun and effortless. And they also have a trained ear for perfect earworms, as closer "mememe" also proves. So that's four absolute bangers in the same LP. Quite a high count in my book As for the rest of the album, it most often explores interesting stuff once you get past its apparently ridiculous tones and auto-tuned excess -- I especially enjoy "One Million Dollars", for instance. Generally speaking, I do believe Dylan and Laura when they say that 100 gecs is not a parody act, that they actually take their music very seriously. Of course, when they go to a full-on whitewashed ska-punk mode -- on the dissociative children tune "Frog On The Floor", or on a "I Got My Tooth Removed" that's painful to hear for more reasons than one -- I can't fully follow them there, lmao. But in a sense, you *need* those laugh-out-loud duds to make this (admittedly short) album what it is. And what is it, I hear you asking? Well, to use the apt words of the *second* review topping this list, this album is what happens when "artists set out to be radically themselves, and achieve it perfectly". More than ever, the world needs that sort of radical stance, if only to symbolically counter all the harmful ones out there. Whether you're able to enjoy it or not, *10,000 gecs* is talking about our very troubled times. And that makes it essential in my book. 4.5/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums, rounded up to 5. 9.5/10 for more general purposes: 5 for the musicianship and production values + 4 for the artistry + 0.5 for contemporary relevance. Only time will tell if said relevance will still be felt in a decade or so, but for the meantime, I have no problem using it to place this LP in my my highest-rated gallery. Number of albums from the original list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 465 Albums from the original list I *might* include in mine later on: 288 Albums from the original list I won't include in mine: 336 ----- Number of albums from the users list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 44 (including this one) Albums from the users list I *might* select for mine later on: 56 Albums from the users list I won't select for mine: 107 --- Émile: voir ma toute dernière réponse sous le disque *Triage* au-dessus
Favorite songs: Hollywood Baby, Dumbest Girl Alive, Billy Knows Jamie, mememe Least favorite songs: The Most Wanted Person in the United States, One Million Dollars 2/5
I had the distinct honor of seeing them play a sold out homecoming show at the Pageant in St. Louis. While they may not live here any more, I take great pride in having them as hometown heroes. A former coworker vaguely knew Dylan in high school. Apparently he was just as weird then as he is now.
There is something there. Interesting.
As a Gen Xer, I have to say I really like this album. It was very very 90s. That manic sort of drawing on all sorts of influences. The ska, The Rock. All of it. I didn’t know this before but this was a great addition
So one's supposed to consider the Internet a musical instrument now? No thanks. Zero stars. Gotta think recommender is trolling for that's what the terminally online do, right?
Hello, autotune. Bananas, no bangers i remember but surprisingly weird and fun.
Very random and eclectic sounding. Not a fan of the vocals, auto tuner, or the lyrics. It’s definitely unique but 100% not for me.
Weren’t we already forced to listen to this? Their shtick works in just the last song. The best that can be said of the rest of the songs is that they’re short.
Between this and Charlie XCX I am on auto tune overload tonight.
Assigned torchbearers of the microgenre hyperpop, 100 gecs carries on the stylistic niche of PB Music's production in overblown bass, pitch-shifted vocals, and a glossy finish that also relishes in glitchy moments. Combined with a pop-led songwriting approach and you get 100 gecs. Their debut LP, 1000 gecs, seemingly blew up the whole thing before flaming out quickly. In comparison, 10,000 gecs is a rock-infused last hurrah before the duo moves on to whatever else they think sounds cool. Nothing about this is really "pure" hyperpop, as it blends a lot of different genres of rock (nu metal, ska punk, power pop) without taking themselves too seriously. It's low-brow dadaist music for the new generation with relatively shorter attention spans, which tracks given the 26-minute runtime. You listen to this and get dazzled by the moving sounds and then move on to the next thing. But in that moment, it was marvelous. CONTENDER FOR THE LIST: No, 1000 gecs is the better choice imo.
This opening track is such a banger. Wow this album is such a sonic blender. They are really taking as many sounds from the 2000's and 2010's as they can. Billy Knows Jamie is a honest to god nu-metal song. And then I Got My Tooth Removed is a thirds wave ska/ carnival polka song? Wow what a cool album.
Stupid, but catchy, produced to the point of absolute insanity. Don't know how to rank it.
A friend I respect introduced me to 100 Gecs, it's her fave, so I want to love it too. The first song encapsulates what could be great here, musically it is so inventive and fun and I love the vibe. But lyrically completely alien. Keeps me from being able to get completely carried away. Solid share though, fresh, new, and worth hearing.
All of these songs feel longer than they really are.
This is a whole grab bag of fun! I'm Gen X. It makes me very happy to find out that this is what the youth are up to. the Boy, does this mishmash of glitch, dubstep, ska punk, metal and all the other stuff it is just hit exactly the right spots. This is bv3k two decades on. And I like it. Best tracks on the first listen - Frog on the Floor and One Million Dollars.
Frog on the floor cemented this album as a new favourite. More frogs!
I really liked a lot of this.
Ooh, that’s a bit much for me. I couldn’t even hack 26mins I’m afraid.
Liked this a lot more than I expected.
Can't do Gecs. It's totally beyond me. It's probably the fifty layers of autotune and the "random xd" humor that makes this sound like nails on chalkboard to me. The Garden pulls off this weird manic shit so much better. Better than their debut. 1/5.
Not 1000 gecs? Well, this is fine too I suppose
Loved it, what I came here for spiky fun
Absolute dog shit. Nothing else to say about that
Thank you, I hated that so much. Now and again it would do something that sounded like it had the potential to be good. Frog on the floor was okay and did some okay bits. I got my tooth removed felt a bit ska and fun but the vocals were so grating. Whole thing sounded like an A-level students just getting drunk on effects and trying whatever the hell they like.
I know this album is going to be controversial. I like 100 gecs and I love this album, but it is 100% not for everyone. I listened to this album a bunch when it came out and then put it aside because it is a lot. But that's hyperpop to me. You binge listen to it and then turn it off for a while. My personal rating: 5/5 My rating relative to the list: 5/5 Should this have been included on the original list? Slight yes. It is a prototypical example of hyperpop.
I admit I went into this thinking I wouldn't like it, but in a way they're like a modern day Blink-182. I thought it was alright.
I have no idea what to make of 10,000 gecs or whether I'm meant to take it seriously or not but it's certainly interesting :D some of it hits with me, especially Hollywood Baby (best track by a mile), Billy Knows Jamie and I Got My Tooth Removed, some of it is dull and filler-eseque which on a 27-minute album is a bit of a waste, but let's take it at face value, it's a pretty fun ride that has me wanting to hear some more from them. 3/5.
Catchy, edgy, and smartly zany! A great combo.
Hmmmm… I think I might be too old for this. There were moments I liked and splashes of fun, and it is unique, so points for that. But it also had moments of irritation too. Not a complete hit or miss for me.
Absurdism for 2023
A bit intense but some great songs 🎵
It’s fun and noisy hyperpop from one of the most eclectic groups out there. I don’t think it’s quite as impactful as their first album - nothing here is on the same level as 745 sticky, money machine, or stupid horse - but it’s still just very enjoyable. The jarring ska of I Got My Toot Removed, the more metal-leaning Billy Knows Jamie, whatever Frog on the Floor is, and the standout pop single Hollywood Baby - it’s all just good dumb fun
On paper, I shouldn't like this but it gives me an early Ween vibe if Ween were zoomers who were into Primus. Four stars.
I'm in my 50s and I just don't understand this. 2 would be condescending. 4 would be patronising. Have a 3 and my confused gratitude for suggesting something I wouldn't have otherwise listened to. I feel old.
Absolutely pish. Like the worst dubstep songs re-recorded by children, with lyrics by barely literate toddlers. Must be one of the worst albums I have ever heard. At least it's short
This is not a genre of music I would listen often. It is like eating a bagfull of ultra sweet candies in one sitting. But sometimes I am in the mood for a bagfull of ultra sweet candies. Even though this is not the kind of music that will please everyone, it is a fun album and I think that everyone who hates it is probably lame at parties. This is probably one of the best hyperpop albums there is. I really like the mix of various inluence as well. 8/10
100,000 gecs
This album is too good. Gonky electopunk with a daft sense of humour and energy for days. Any time it gets a bit samey, it'll give you a folky song about frogs or a ska punk banger about a bad tooth to keep you on it. Genuinely one of the best albums of the decade so far. Now gimme all of your freakin Doritos and Fritos.
Fun & I certainly relate to that tooth song haha
They are good, but they abuse autotunes in an attempt to be funny. It just makes some songs annoying.
This reminded me of Charlie XCX at times, at others I felt like I was in a Fortnite match. Also pretty wild that the UHC Murder suspect was caught yesterday and we get The Most Wanted Person In The United States. This list always seems to sync up with reality. At less than 30 minutes and some truly zaney tracks, this was a unique inclusion. Especially for coming out last year. Someone must really love this album.
I know these gecs, I've heard all 10,000 of them before. This is a great and fun album, most people's introduction to the band (including me) was their previous, 1000 gecs, they multiplied since then. It's sort of a hyper-pop-punk, that's how I'd describe it. Love the sampling of "Sicko Mode" on the opener, very well executed. Not everything works for me here, but enough that I'd say it's great. Really not sure which of their albums I prefer, but this is a worthy inclusion for sure, very unique! Favorite tracks: Dumbest Girl Alive, Hollywood Baby, One Million Dollars, 757, Billy Knows Jamie, The Most Wanted Person. Album art: Only two gecs in sight, faces obscured by their t-shirts. Not bad at all, very DIY (as I'm sure their music is too). 4/5
Hoooo boy I'd love to see people who completed this list, and are unaware of 100 gecs, react to this. It's a lethal dose of radiation from a sentient meme that somehow learned to play pop-punk. I initially didn't "get" 100 gecs, but I later ended up enjoying them cos they're dumb, fun music with great pop sensibilities. You just have to get over the absolute kitchen sink being thrown at you. I enjoyed this, but it may have dipped a bit too much into ska for my liking. Anyone who denies "mememe" being a banger is just not having fun. Favorite tracks: "mememe", "Hollywood Baby", "Doritos and Fritos"
Sorry even 25 mins of this was too much for me, the winey vocals did my head in.
Excellent. It's like a SKA version of they might be giants. And really enjoyable. Sounds like a band that's having fun doing what they love.
I really like the aggressive buzzy electronic version of alt rock that 100 gecs delivers. Hollywood Baby is just a home run and MeMeMe is super solid as well. The rest seems a bit up and down, with definitely some pretty quirky tracks (most notably Frog on the Floor). But overall, i like the experimental nature and vibe.
This was my second go with this album. I still find it just as frustrating as when I listened to it last year. I like the punky approach but not much else. This is an album that I think has an interesting idea but I don't care much for the execution. It also somehow feels longer than it's sub 30 minute run time. I'm not sure HOW, but it does. This is the definition of a 2.5 for me but that's not an option.
This is way too newly released and has made no pop cultural ripple that I'm aware of yet. This is complete crap. It is grating and infantile. And I think maybe, some shameless self promotion?
A mish mash of genres and styles, perhaps designed to be consumed in 30 seconds bursts on Tic Toc. 10 tracks and been and gone in 27 minutes. Excellent for the attention spanily challenged. Rating: 2.5 Playlist track: Hollywood Baby Date listened: 30/09/24
Come on. No.
Lmaooooo im so glad someone used their user album on a 100 gecs album and I didn’t use mine on 1000 gecs (the superior of the two albums imo). This my or may not be a troll pick but idc because I genuinely think their music is great in its own right. Hyper pop to the extreme that’s very short and diabetically sweet because if it went a minute past 30 minutes it’d probably be too much. If you don’t like it go back to listening to Neil young for the millionth time grandpa. I love basically all the song but Hollywood baby is my fav ***also I said only go backwards instead of less I know the better in my currents notes which is kinda embarrassing oopsie.
What a wild ride! New to me, but I loved it. Don't know if I would get sick of it after a while, but for now it's a 4.5! Thanks to whomever submitted this one!
