Album Summary

Nonagon Infinity is the eighth studio album by Australian psychedelic rock band King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard. It was released on 29 April 2016 on ATO Records. The album is designed to play as an "infinite loop" where each song segues into the next and the last song segues into the first, so that "the record can be played front-to-back-to-front-to-back and the sound won't break". The title is a reference to this idea, as there are nine songs on the album that could be played "infinitely". Considered the band's breakthrough album, Nonagon Infinity earned positive reviews from critics and gave King Gizzard greater international exposure, while becoming their first release to make the top 20 of the Australian albums chart. The album "controversially" won Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal album at the ARIA Music Awards of 2016, with some accusing the ARIA of miscategorizing Nonagon Infinity. The album won Best Album at the Music Victoria Awards of 2016. The band has referenced or expanded upon various aspects of the album on subsequent projects. The opening track, "Robot Stop", briefly features use of microtonal tuning, a technique explored further on the band's follow-up, Flying Microtonal Banana, while themes from Nonagon Infinity were revisited in "The Lord of Lightning vs. Balrog" suite from their 2017 album, Murder of the Universe.

Progressive rock, psychedelic rock, garage rock, jazz fusion, heavy metal. Ni fu ni fa.

How to not get into this? Ripping guitars over propulsive drumming, alternatively trippy and hard, over-the-top endless variations, just when you think you have something figured out it drags you somewhere you didn't know you'd be happy to go. Very happy.

I love this record. I own it (CD!) and served it up for our own side listening project to our review group. It's one of those records that never gives the same experience twice — something new presents itself on every listen. The endless loop aside, the way the band borrows lyrics and melodies from other songs on the record makes for a self-referential soup that elevates the album experience with the manic unrestrained energy of a spaceship barreling down a highway. I give it a 5 star with a hell yeah. Nonagon infinity opens the door. By the way, WTF are they talking about?

I like their gumption

Adler turned me and Andre on to this band a couple years ago and I love them. I could only check this out on YouTube, which is not my ideal listening experience. I wish I had the musical bandwidth to understand microtonal tuning...even after Andre explained it's still kinda murky. But this is cool shit!

This is a band that I've been meaning to listen to for a while, since it seems like I see their name everywhere. They also seem to be highly prolific, which might account for the fact that I didn't really find much to latch onto here. It's all very competently made, but it felt generic a lot. That can definitely be a downside of bands that put out a lot of albums, since inevitably everything is less polished. It's a fun album, I can't say that I disliked it, but it didn't speak to me either 3/5

The album that got me into Gizz. Even after all this time this is still one of their absolute best. Nonagon Infinity opens the door!

Not bad, I think KG have better records although there are like 50 to choose from!

Started off strong with really good garage rock vibes, but lost steam halfway through.

KG&LW are one of those bands that I feel like I _should_ love, and I _would_ love to see them live. But I have had such a hard time getting into their studio work. Really for two reasons: (1) the sheer magnitude of the task is overwhelming -- I mean ~30 full length albums is pure insanity and (2) they aren't on Spotify any longer... On the first point, their prolific release strategy, I am of two minds. On one hand, I love that they constantly produce and are fluid and true to their own influences. On the other, playing the numbers game and releasing 5 albums a year sort of cheapens the exercise. I feel like with that production rate we aren't getting thought through projects, we are just getting the first things that come to mind in a jam session. Which standing back and looking at the relative consistency, is damned impressive. But ultimately, much of their music sort of just hits my brain and then slides right off. This album finds KG&LW tapping into a sort of garge-rock inspired production style (mega condensed) with a continuous running prog-epic format about it. I enjoyed it just fine, but tbh its not an album that has a magnetic pull about it (for me). Low 4.

WOOOOO! - Stu Mackenzie My favorite of the Gizz albums which has a couple 5 star albums at the top. Listening to this one during a 10-mile race a couple years ago felt like a cheat code. Unrelenting energy in this one (except for Mr. Beat which came at a pretty inopportune time on a long hill). Slam dunk 5, easily in my top albums of all time.

Second favorite Gizz album and it absolutely pwns for the first 20 minutes or so through People Vultures. I remember the first time hearing that I couldn't really comprehend what was going on all I knew it that I loved it. The remainder of the album is also completely awesome. Road Train is such a baller way to close it out.

Taking this off Spinshare! My favorite Gizz album. Flows so well and every song is a banger. Tell me you don’t sing along to Mr. Beat. Evil Death Roll might be my fav song on here such a banger. Easy 5.

Annoying that this wasn't on Spotify. Was able to listen via Bandcamp. That said, totally worth the effort! I don't think I had ever listened to a full album from these guys before. Super fun.

Very cool album, like the technical aspects an the gimmick

Well that was fun! Worth seeking out

Ooh, another visit from the Lizard Wizard. I reviewed Polygonwanaland a few weeks ago, and I thought it was really good. I’m expecting more of the same from this album since we’re moving from a polygon to a nonagon. While I did like the hard-hitting rock sound of this album, I thought it was just fine. I appreciate what the band was trying to do here, creating an album that can go on in an infinite loop, but to my ears, things felt repetitive at times. I did like how this album started off with a bang though. “Robot Stop” launched right into things with some really catchy guitar playing. I did enjoy how seamlessly this album moved from song to song, but the whole infinite loop gimmick just wasn’t anything I’d want out of an album. This was fun to listen to, but it’s not something I’d come back to.

I like King Gizzard a lot, and I enjoyed this, though I don't think it's my favorite of theirs (Laminated Denim and Flying Microtonal Banana are two I prefer). Still, a comfortable four.

Complete ADHD idiots or unparalleled enthusiasts of the craft. Possibly both. That's Nonagon Infinity in a nutshell, and it's exactly what makes this so memorable. The loop gimmick has been done before, but what sets this apart is the relentlessness. Forty-one minutes and the foot never comes off the gas, even in the quieter moments. Like I'm In Your Mind Fuzz, the tracks flow into each other or share the same bone structure, recurring tempos and motifs that make the whole thing feel like one continuous idea rather than a collection of songs. There's a shuffle myth that's grown up around this album, that the track order doesn't matter, and while that might be more lore than fact, it fits the album's whole ethos perfectly. You have to be in the mood for it though. I was in the mood for something rocky and pulsating with energy, and right album, right time, this hit exactly where I needed it to. If I'd come to this in a different mood, it might have landed at three and a half or four. As it stands, this is a five star album, mood and all.

I've heard a few tracks by King Gizzard before and my Spotify was littered with tracks I'd liked by them, until they pulled the rug. I had to dig this album out on YouTube, but this gave me a chance to listen to the whole loop a few times with seamless transitions, so actually worked out as a bonus. Definitely right up my street and an easy five stars.

King Gizzard!! They are rabidly supported online but the music just doesn't hit me. It sounds gimmicky and contrived. Another band that withdrew from Spotify in protest at the support of nefarious funding of warmongering. Still, the music is ok and interesting to be honest. There are a lot worse out there.

I feel like this is definitely unique but just not enough for me to get past the strangeness of it if that makes sense. I think I just didn't really understand it and like I'm not really the correct audience?

Wild. My initial thoughts are at either extreme: they sound like a modern version of classic Gong <applause> but also this album sounds like dogshit processed through a cheese grater. Took me about 12 minutes to figure out I wasn't still on the first song - the entire album is a loop which is a cool concept in theory [years ago my band tried this live at a gig; had an 8 song set and composed transitions for everything so it was one continuous ~40 minute set. We broke up soon after.]. Honestly it gets a little exhausting ... mostly because the tempo rarely varies over the first 4 songs and there isn't much difference at all between songs. Finally once we get to "Mr. Beat" it changes up *a little*... Why is the sound so bad on this album dammit. Impressive to be sure - love the talent / creativity and I'd been looking for a way into this band but I'm not yet sure this was it for me. I honestly think the mix tires my ears and in conjunction with the endless frenetic pace puts it just over my threshold. I bet this is great live, though. I'll try another of theirs. 6/10 3 stars IMO: Belonged in the book? Yes.

Fuck yes, this album slaps. I tried to get into KGatLW after listening to thid record, I turned around to look at a cute squirrel and in between this guys released like 5 albums and one of them was a double. Impossible. I tried, but can't keep up. Anyway, this record is good trippy fun.

obligatory 10/10 for King Gizzard

Pretty fun! Playing it on a loop would wear me out, though. And if you don't know about the fig wasp, it is one of the crazier things in nature. https://askabiologist.asu.edu/explore/life-and-death-fig-wasp

Ethically I get why this band aren’t ons Spotify and good for them and I love this album but my god it was strange to listen to it on YouTube witg ads still tho with its full intention in mind it’s a 5/5

Rock music is alive and well within the spirit of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Fusing the fuzzed-out energy of the Stooges, the psychedelic textures of early Pink Floyd, and the conceptual approach of later Pink Floyd, King Gizz delivers like a train with no brakes. With each track flowing seamlessly from one to the next, Nonagon Infinity becomes a cohesive experience that fully respects the holistic nature of the music album. This extends to the final track Road Train, which loops back up to the opening track Robot Stop if you are inclined to put the album on repeat. Eagle-eared listeners will remember that trick from The Wall, though this serves the listener more than the narrative. Regardless, it is nothing short of mesmerizing in its execution. Is it a little frontloaded? Sure, but it helps to slow things down in the second half before picking right back up with Road Train. I think for all that you can fault the record for, there's at least five things to its benefit. Just such an accomplishment of modern rock music. CONTENDER FOR THE LIST: Fuucckkkkk yeah boys.

I like the idea of this band more than the hand itself. I'm primarily a metalhead so this SHOULD be right up my alley. But I just get tired when I listen to them.

Den här hittade i alla fall inte jag på Spotify. Fick bli på YouTube. Lät inte som plattan bara hade tio år på nacken. Trodde nästan det var 70-tal. Fanns ett par skapliga låtar och då får det bli en trea i betyg.

Great. I only knew they by name.

Honestly underwhelming compared to the other albums I’ve heard from them along with the hype around this one. It’s fairly straight forward with no big parts. I disliked how the last song ended. Why so abrupt? Am I missing something? Possibly. Instrumentation, vocals, and production are all good. Songwriting and lyrics could have been a little more interesting, but there was nothing wrong there. A tad disappointed in the lizard and the wizard. 3/5

Foundational getting-work-done-in-university album for me

Shoutout to the guy who added this. We follow each other on RYM, and you're cool as hell. Just like this album. Cream of the crop with so many cool moving parts both musically but also as a concept. There's a reason King Gizzard is big enough to still be making hit albums nearly a decade after this release, but this is still their best, IMO. I could see them out doing themselves, though. They're THAT GOOD of a band.

Not my favorite Gizz album but its fun.

Like surfing on music. Tremendous fuzzy fun!

he album is designed to play as an "infinite loop" where each song segues into the next and the last song segues into the first, so that "the record can be played front-to-back-to-front-to-back and the sound won't break" Unfortunately, since it's not on Spotify, I listened to it on Youtube, and the ads between the songs killed the vibe. But even so, it was pretty good. I don't think there was a stand out song, but I felt that was the point, as they run into each other.

The first half of the album kicks serious ass, or in their words, "f*cks sh*t up". Robot Stop, Big Fig Wasp, Gamma Knife, People-Vultures. Chef's kiss. So, if this album truly is created to just run seamlessly from track to track (and then all over again from the start), the whole album should be a gem. Well, those songs I mentioned do it (impossible not to rock along). But something changed around the middle song, Mr. Beat. It was still kinda fun, with a beat that I could rock to. But the album lost its continuity - it slowed down a bit in that song, especially toward the end and then that didn't seem to fit with the start of the next track Evil Death Roll. But even that song seemed to ebb and flow from energetic to subdued, and so went the rest of the album. Not quite the same cohesiveness anymore. I will grant that the penultimate song Wah Wah bled well into the final song Road Train, and when I played the album on repeat that one rolled perfectly back into Robot Stop. Pretty f'n cool. You gotta play this album on repeat, it is such a trip when you realize how got back to the start. Truly seamless. All in all, a super cool album with a couple slight hiccups and an album I probably never would've found on my own. Great pick.

Nice to hear something with a bit of something about it

Run of the mill and formulaic rock.

Really not my genre so I enjoyed that a lot more than I expected. Thank you.

One of the great albums they have produced. The best thing about them is if you don’t like this one wait until the next one as they are ridiculously prolific and not tied to any particular genre

Energetic and raw, maybe a little repetitive. Fun and relatively enjoyable but I wouldn't go back frequently.

Another band on my list of bands I feel I should love but somehow don’t. I’ll keep giving them a chance. I’m sure one day it will click.

Occasionally, when listening to 60's bands on the 1001, I remarked about how prolific their output was. Today's rock bands generally put out an album every two year (I know, there are many exceptions that are more or less frequent), but back then two albums in the same year wasn't uncommon. But the one band holding down that tradition, and exceeding it, is King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. 27 albums in 13 years!? Their output is insane. A lot of those 60's bands should have pared things down instead of recording everything they wrote or messed around with, and to some extent that's true for KGLW as well. But "Nonagon Infinity" is still a great example of how psychedelic rock and recording all your half-baked ideas can be pretty great, even though some albums on the 1001 tried to convince me otherwise. Thanks for choosing one of those 27 albums to add, glad to finally listen to a full KGLW album, and happy for any additional excuse to say King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard.

Lots of energy to enjoy here. Thanks for the discovery!

The name is off putting, as well as the fact my ex is a fan, but they weren’t as weird as I thought they’d be.

Another day, and I was fooled again by the cover art. Good piece of music, but I'll not remember it for more than 2 days (the loop structure of the album successfully made me listen to it 1 time and a half)

Some good sounds and a unique band

Impressively manic and relentlessly sharp-edge. One hears as many prog flourishes as metal effects, but ultimately doesn't care about where they slot most comfortably genre-wise (if only because one won't be listening to them much, if ever). Infinite looping sounds like a terrible idea and the band name is unforgivably stupid (begging for a full point off). Relative to list proper, this would be an upgrade to most of the metal acts.

It’s fine although it’s essentially one long song.

This thing thrashes and feels like someone’s graduate mathematical thesis at the same time. That’s a fun magic trick. I’m not surprised to find some King Gizzard on this list.

Back in May of 2016, I had the pleasure of seeing King Gizzard, on tour for this record, at the Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan. I had been a fan of theirs for about a year at that point and this record had only come out a few weeks prior. It was, hands down, one of the best shows I’ve ever seen and as I describe the show, I’m going to try not to sound like the type of guy who is like “you missed out on something special if you didn’t see this era of the band”, but I’m afraid it might come off like that. Apologies in advance, I still think they are a great live band, but I’ve never seen another band play with the intensity they had on this tour. They came out, started with Robot Stop and then continued through their set, song after song, with hyper-focused intensity and barely a break in between songs. The way the songs go from one right into the next on this record, they were doing that onstage, but also incorporating songs from their other albums as well. They were an unstoppable juggernaut in this era, channeling NEU! and Hawkwind’s propulsive energy into their high octane garage-psych. They were intent on bowling you over and unless you didn’t have a pulse, it knocked you right on your ass. It was, pardon the pun, like getting hit by a train. The only time they took a break for more than 30 seconds or so that night was when they paused the show in the middle of The River to stop a security guard from ejecting a fan from the show for vaping. They stopped playing, asked the guard why the guy was being tossed out, and then told him bring the fan back in. The guard acquiesced, let the fan back in and then got on stage, bowed before the band, in an effort to make peace with the band and the crowd. (Video here: https://youtu.be/3Xxkac158Bg?si=KpNKK3ERQbtZQ3mv) Like I said, no one was getting in their way that night. For the next 3 years, whenever they came to New York, I was there to see them and they did not disappoint. Their show at Central Park in 2019 during the Infest the Rats Nest tour was the peak of the hyper-focused live energy I first saw in 2016. During that time, they were absolutely the greatest live band I’ve ever seen, though I know King Gizzard fans will argue that they’ve only gotten better live since then. For me, I’ve begun to sour on them as they’ve embraced a more “jammy” sound and their albums have become, to my ears, less memorable. They are still a great live band, I’ll often watch their live streams to keep up and see what the shows are like these days, but as they’ve grown more exploratory in the live setting, I feel like they may have lost some of the intensity that drew me in a decade ago. …and that’s ok. Bands change, people’s taste change. It’s the way of the world. It’s just that for me, from 2014 - 2019 (during which they released 11 albums, I think), this band felt unstoppable, like they consistently hit the mark and couldn’t miss.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard isn't bad, it has a really cool seamless sort of production and the transitions between songs carry great energy and get me interested. It's maybe a bit one-speed throughout but for a modern take on psychedelic rock it's actually pretty interesting and definitely worth a listen. The band can absolutely play too, full on, fair play, 3/5.

I’ve seen these guys live 8 times now. (2 more next month!) I can confidently say they have to be one of the hardest working bands today. 27 albums since 2012 and not a single bad album.

A great band, and a great suggestion. I'm not sure this is my favourite album of theirs, but it is certainly in the top few.

This was pretty unique, I definitely want to give this album another listen. I've never heard of the group before.

Shut the fuck up about this band.

Relentless psych metal prog groove rock that very briefly pauses in its onslaught. Sounds raw at times. Difficult to dislike. I have heard this one before and need to explore more from the scarily big discography.

9 years since it released! Their full discography's so big that I tend to underrate this one, but it still fucking rips. Sounds like it's being played by a swarm of angry bees. Great pick from the submitter, the garage rock sound's a good entry point to King Gizzard's stuff

Love this album, 100% their masterpiece. I like King Gizzard and appreciate how they do things differently, but sometimes do wish they would slow down the album releases and bring out top quality albums like this one. But then maybe that would make them just like all the other bands so they should just keep being them.

Got to love a bit of King Gizzard

Expected better.

Weirdo swarm!

A lot of fun, but repetitive at times 7/10

Good album and a very deserved pick for the 2010s

You know what, I am actually quite glad that I've listened to this. There is precisely zero chance I'll ever listen to it again, but I do appreciate the effort of putting it together.

Pretty good

WOOOO!! One of my absolute favourite albums of the last few years. A continuous loop of jams upon jams, ridiculously good 5/4 hooks, devilishly fun guitar playing, and pure energy and good vibes

I think that at this point there is not much more to be said about KGATLW, since they are so talked about in music circles. The main reason I don't listen to them is because they have such an immense catalogue, that it is overwhelming to go through. They have some incredible songs, but overall, their music always feel a bit samey to me (yes even considering how versatile they are). This album is pretty much what I expected. I liked some songs, thought others were ok, overall liked it. However it is not a band that I will often go back to and this album does not change that. 7/10

Have we gotten a Gizzard Lizard Wizard album before? I really liked the opening song, reminded me of a video game or show theme. The rest of the songs quickly started blending together, though, with that rough guitar.

I've actually got this album on vinyl, bought it on clearance at Urban Outfitters and still haven't listened to it. It's good, thankfully! I've heard KG before, they're pretty cool, this album's pretty cool. Thanks for finally making me listen! 3.5/5

King gizzard is one of those bands I always meant to start listening to but never got around to it so I’m glad the list finally forced my hand. I’m also pissed because this was really good and I should’ve gotten into it sooner.

Gizzing so hard right now. Not only do King Gizzard deserve a spot on the list, they feel like a band that should have at least 3 albums on there with their insanely diverse discography. This is 42 minutes of raw energy. It's one of the most pure fun albums ever recorded and one of the best of the 2010s by one of the most hard-working bands of all time. Easy 5/5. Also recommend "I'm In Your Mind Fuzz" to anyone who liked this and would like to hear more.

Ah King Gizz... this is the only album of theirs that I have listened to as I was told it was a good starting point to get into their music. I know how prolific they are and how much music they put out. Personally I find it too much music but I have friends who are really into them and have seen them a bunch. I would definitely check them out if I saw them at a festival but I've never really sought them out otherwise.cWhen there exists diagrams of how to parse their discography is just too much. Now for the album, I enjoyed it but I don't find myself to returning to it. It's solid music but just not exactly what I always vibe with. My personal rating: 4/5 My rating relative to the list: 4/5 Should this have been included on the original list? Yes. Probably some album from them should be included.

So, the last song just ends like that?

In order to provide the concept of continuity front to back, they just made every song sound identical. It's an ok song.

I was a bit confused when I thought the first track never ended, but it had a great sound and made for an interesting experience. The sound was both real now and retro. I enjoyed it.

Glad I gave it second listen because playing it at low volume while preoccupying myself with something else just made it irritating.

I first heard of this band when I saw they were playing in Seattle and considered getting a ticket. I kind of wish I had, because they have to be interesting to see. At that time I loved the name and previewed several different songs but didn’t listen to a whole album. Glad they came up here, because they are pretty darn unique and I love the manic rock quality of it all. This project has revealed my attraction to psychedelic music as exemplified here, and this album selection has me kicking myself for not going to see this live. Next time… With a name like King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard I expect some weird-ass fun - and they deliver! Some great instruments with unique sounds - and I’m always up for some great organ! All fueled by that manic beat… This album being continuously playable without breaks (for eternity, if desired) is not something my partner is looking for me to play but I think it’s great! Just kept listening around the bend, so to speak, and it kept the energy level up for my activities. It’s kind of cool when Road Train blends back into Robot Stop! I’m going to be trying this one out at the gym to see if it extends my workouts towards infinity… and I can’t wait to play this on my next long drive somewhere… ROAD TRAIN! Terrific! Thank you for selecting this!

These guys are like chameleons with music. They play every genre and churn out albums like bands did back in the 70s. Overall this one was pretty cool. I like the transitions in songs and thought the general alt rock style was solid. Felt like it was 80s mixed with modern style. Overall a cool album. 7.2/10

Australian garage band, if that's your thing

Not on Spotify? What the heck is up with that? Are these guys Joe Rogan protestors too? I didn't know what to expect, I thought this band was actually way older than they really are apparently. I thought this was going to be some deep cut 60's psychedelic / acid rock, but I guess it's really more of a 2010's homage/revival of it. It's not my thing. Cool that people are into it, but I'm not. It just didn't hook me.

I think I made a similar point about Prefab Sprout on the original 1001 list - sometimes there is a price to be paid for giving your band a particularly stupid name. Minus a star for that. Now I've actually listened to their music they certainly very good.

I've heard of them before, but I don't know when and I don't know why. They seem to be an interesting enough group. Not sure that I'd be able to listen to the down under version of Iron Butterfly for too many times, though.

Disappointing. I was looking forward to this, but it is just buzzy, high energy rock with a jazzy randomness and a vocalist that doesn't do much for me. It all starts to sound the same unless the repeat the title over and over and over again (I'm looking at you Mr. Beat). There's nothing that particularly catchy or engaging... maybe the last track, Road Train, has a glimmer, but by that time i have long ago checked out.

He’ll yeah

I've always avoided this band because their name is so cloyingly annoying. I wasn't right to. But I wasn't necessarily wrong either. It's a sort of scuzzed out psych-garage rock, but performed by incredibly accomplished musicians. On a record it sounds... Very technically proficient but a little dry. But I can absolutely imagine that these would come alive if you saw them live. So I can't rate it highly, but I think I now see their appeal.

Very nice loop!

Progressive rock, psychedelic rock, garage rock, jazz fusion, heavy metal. Ni fu ni fa.

Nothing else to say but that King Gizz are THE best band that will ever exist in my lifetime. Have been procrastinating on putting forward my user submitted only because I can't decide which gizz album to choose. Good to know Nonagom has already been selected. Also bonus fact was in a hospital today and walked passed a sign pointing in the direction of a Gamma Knife, had no idea it was a real thing.

Not the King Gizzard album I would chose, but then again there are so many to chose from. It is a sublime one with great guitar licks, microtonal tuning and an infinite loop. The tempo of the album breaks down every negative opinion about it.

This band gets a lot of respect from me for the amount of albums they put out in a short amount of time. And it seems people respect the quality. I've tried listening to a few albums, and this one I've tried a few times. However, the songs still seem bland and very similar to each other.

Raucous contemporary psychedelic-prog that is musically on point and never loses an ounce of energy from start to finish. But I lost interest somewhere in the middle. Fave Songs: Robot Stop, Big Fig Wasp, Gamma Knife

Really cool. Loads of energy

Rating: 10/10

This record only really does one thing, to the extent that songs are pretty difficult to distinguish from one another. The one thing is quite pleasant and accessible 2010s/20s rock music, so is not unenjoyable. Rating: 2.5 Playlist track: Robot Stop Date listened: 10/08/24
