Album Summary

(What's the Story) Morning Glory? is the second studio album by English rock band Oasis. Released on 2 October 1995 by Creation Records, it was produced by Owen Morris and the group's guitarist and main songwriter Noel Gallagher. The structure and arrangement style of the album were a significant departure from the group's previous album Definitely Maybe (1994). Gallagher's compositions were more focused in balladry and placed more emphasis on "huge" choruses, with the string arrangements and more varied instrumentation contrasting with the rawness of the group's debut album. Morning Glory was the group's first album with drummer Alan White, who replaced Tony McCarroll (though McCarroll still appeared on the album, drumming on the track "Some Might Say"). The record propelled Oasis from being a crossover indie act to a worldwide rock phenomenon, and is seen by critics as a significant record in the timeline of British indie music. Morning Glory sold a record-breaking 345,000 copies in its first week in the UK, spent 10 weeks at number one on the UK Albums Chart. It was also the band's breakthrough in America, reaching number four on the US Billboard 200 and being certified 4× platinum there. The album yielded four major hit singles in the band's native Britain: "Some Might Say" and "Don't Look Back in Anger" reached number one, and "Roll with It" and "Wonderwall" peaked at number two; the latter spent a then lengthy 30 consecutive weeks on the chart during its initial run and emerged as the band's biggest selling UK hit. "Champagne Supernova" and "Wonderwall" reached number one on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. At the 1996 Brit Awards, the album won Best British Album. Over several months in 1995 and 1996, the band supported the album with an extensive world tour, which saw them play to among the largest audiences ever at the time. Although a commercial success, the record initially received lukewarm reviews from mainstream critics; many reviewers deemed it inferior to Definitely Maybe, with the songwriting and production particular points of criticism. However, allegedly because of perceived greater marketability potential over their Britpop rival Blur's simultaneous release, The Great Escape, the critical tone set for the album quickly changed in the eyes of the media. Critical opinion towards the album completely reversed in the ensuing months and years, with critics recognising its strengths and its "populist appeal". Despite the acclaim surrounding it being lesser today due to its intensive media hype at the time, Morning Glory is still considered a seminal record of both the Britpop era and the 1990s in general. The album has also appeared on several lists of the greatest albums in rock music, and at the 2010 Brit Awards, it was named the greatest British album since 1980. It has sold over 22 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. As of October 2018, it is the UK's fifth best-selling album and third best-selling studio album of all time, having been certified 16× platinum and selling 4.94 million copies. It was also the UK's best-selling album of the 1990s, and is currently the second-longest charting studio album in the UK, having spent over 500 weeks on the UK Album Chart.

What's The Story Morning Glory?: 1995. I've heard enough Oasis in my life without revisiting this parcel of odious drivel. Can't abide them, never could.

oasis is like the perfect "i'm having a party that's a little grungy but not *that* grungy and i need music to fill the background without taking over from anything else going on" music anyway here's wonderwall

There are few album titles that have entered into my common vernacular more deeply than this one. I think it's best to embrace Oasis as a pop band, because their songs don't really say a whole lot overall. This is about half jangly pop that exists to be an earworm, half mega hits, and Cast No Shadow. What does Hello, or Some Might Say really mean? Who cares? They're great pop songs. I mean, can there be any better evidence of this than Wonderwall? The band made up a word and gave it little context and the whole planet said “yes. Truly I have a wonderwall as well.” 4 minutes of strum-strum, a bunch of clipped phrases put together as if they mean something. It's a stage facade with wooden props behind it. Champagne Supernova is little different, except that a) it is very popular with people who get high, because if you say you are high in a song, people who also get high will listen to your song, and b) the beginning slish-slosh of it makes me need to pee most of the time. Wonderwall does not make me need to pee. But being caught beneath the landslide of a champagne supernova is intrinsically as not-a-thing as a wonderwall. But it sounds good. It sounds good enough that both songs have been beaten like the first horse to ever die. These songs have been overplayed to the point that even 30 years later, they still feel tired. The other two hits? They hold up way better. “Don't Look Back In Anger” must have made Liam SO angry at the time, because it is far and away the most compelling thing on the album and also the only song sung by brother Noel. It is every wannabe Beatles influence writ large, and it succeeds entirely. I don't believe you if you haven't sung this drunk in a group before. On the other hand, “Morning Glory” is a sonic wail that the album desperately needs, the least overworked of the four and so the one that still sounds the freshest. And the rest is a big beautiful mess of shimmering guitars and songs that sound real good but ultimately hold up best if you think about them least. It's a joyful album in that way, something you can embrace and let wash over you. I wish all pop music respected its listeners enough to hold up even after scrutiny reveals how airy it is. And then there is Cast No Shadow, which sticks out like a sore thumb. The two “swamp” interludes, which were simply listed as blanks on the CD I had, are too immaterial to feel weird. “Cast No Shadow” is the weird lone somewhat eerie, somewhat dark outlier. It's not the only non-upbeat song here, but it's the one that feels different, a little sad, a little existential and helpless in a way the bickering blokes in Oasis tend to not allow themselves. I'm not gonna say Cast No Shadow is the best song here, but it's an important one. It existing adds a counterweight to a fluffy album. The bit of salt or char or tang that keeps a dessert from being unbearably sweet. If it sounds like this is negative, well, it's realistic. Oasis was never that deep. But it does what it does admirably and it's an imminently repeat-listenable album of shiny dumb rock. There's a lot of bad dumb rock, to be sure. But Morning Glory will always be a reminder that music doesn't always need to be complicated or meaningful. It just needs to actually be good. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

its good honestly, roll w it is a banger

Don’t look back in anger carries this album

the album cover is like wish you were here but with less aura. anyway morning glory has been my favorite oasis song since i was in diapers

#57 Some classics in here

music is love

Ok, kenn ich, mag ich

Blur is better

8 - GOOD

I knew the hits but never listened all the way through. Judging this without modern context, it really is a great rock album. Multiple catchy and memorable songs, and it makes sense that so many of them have stuck around as modern classics. Top Songs: Hello, Wonderwall, Don't Look Back in Anger, Some Might Say, She's Electric, Champagne Supernova

This is a no skip album. Very easily singable songs. So this deserves 5 stars.

I enjoy their hit song Wonderwall. Come to find out, I don't really enjoy a bunch of other songs that sound like Wonderwall, but are just not as good. I found the album a pleasant enough background while making dinner, but overall a forgettable experience

Aside from the very well known tracts, I found myself skipping forward.

Just a fine rock album.

I of course knew Wonderwall and Don't Look Back in Anger. A stand out for me was Some Might Say. This album just works for me, no other way to describe it.

Not my favorite or my type. Seemed like it didnt know what genre to be.

no niezle nie

not my cup of tea

3.5! champagne supernova is one of my all time favourite songs

Yesterday, I commented about intolerable Rush fans. Today, insufferable Oasis fans said "hold my bucket hat".

Better than Definitely, Maybe, for sure.

I liked this better than Definitely Maybe, but not enough to bump my 3.5 to a 4.

One of my daughters’ 3rd grade recorder band played Wonderwall. I dislike this album.

I enjoy the occasional oasis tune …but this is not for me

3.3/5 Like everyone I've heard the hits hundreds of times but I was quite surprised at how good the rest of the album was. Other than the 2 interlude tracks this was a pleasure to listen too.

Some bangers to chant along to in a inebriated state. Other songs are grating at best…

Wow! I didn't even know I liked 90's rock. Really good, need to listen more. 9/10.

After all the shitty Brit albums of this era that I listened to, it makes sense the one that sort of started it all was decent

"Bound with all the weight of all the words he tried to say / Chained to all the places that he never wished to stay" The most poetic thing Gallagher has ever written. Full of 90s rock bangers. Fully representative of the whole counter-grunge Brit-wave movement. Music to punch your brother in the face to.

Sally can wait has to be one of the best hooks in music. Had the3 bangers for me and the rest didn’t really resonate

I really liked it. tho most of the songs seam really similar, its like that most of the time for 90s band. still a 4 stars !

i dont think oasis is really smth for me, ive tried listening to this album numerous times and by now i should've at least have some kind of sympathy towards it, but no, i like maybe 1 song from here, and without any strong feelings as well

Good album by Oasis, probably my favorite of theirs. I remember the hysteria over this band during this album's release, with the constant Beatles comparisons. I do think they are a great band, but it didn't have the staying power, probably because the relationship between the brothers exploded.

This is the britpop that gave us so many of the shitty albums on this list, I can't give it a bad score.

big britpop fan (i prefer suede though), i saw oasis on their return tour last year, i grew up listening to them, so many reasons i love this album. i'm actually not even a massive fan of THEM particularly but i really dont think this album has a bad song. my favourite is cast no shadow, it holds a lot of memories for me. of course the heavy hitters here are great too. the kind of album where you know exactly what you're getting when you listen which i really appreciate when im feeling lazy and cant decide what to listen to.

Been a long time. The kind of album I have no issue being on but never something I choose to put on. 3 stars

Alright. Had Be Here Now growing up & always heard that album was bad & that this was the good one, but honestly, other than the hits, I still prefer Be Here Now.

“You could get killed chasing after your damn fortune and glory!” “Maybe. But not today.” Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)

One of my friends used to say that I was “betraying my peasant origins” whenever he saw me smoking. I feel the same way for saying this is good. It feels like a guilty pleasure. Artistically leaves something to be desired. But I like it.

Here’s the Oasis album I owned. It didn’t hit as hard this time around, but I loved it back in the day.

Suosikkibiisi: Cast no Shadow 4/5

Meh. Idk…

Is this their best album absolutely not… is this an album that is entwined with every strand of my DNA? Yes. I can remember hearing it for the first time, I can remember vividly the clothes I wore to see them at Earls Court. These are songs so familiar to me you almost lose the magic. But I remember the first time I heard the backing vocals on cast no shadow or when the drums kick in on wonderwall and they were special special moments. It’s not perfect, but nothing should be- but the memories are glorious

Don’t love oasis. But still enjoy this more than 90% of the mediocre nothing on this list.

Kinda boring

Their best work. Simple stuff, well produced.

Säga vad man vill om the Gallaghers och huruvida de är överskattade osv, men detta ÄR ett bra album! Mycket minnen kopplat till låtar och allt bara låter som ens tonår (oavsett när man faktiskt var tonåring).

Its just... really boring?

Too perfect. I get why people love this band, but they are just meh to me. 3/5.

Nope. Didn't like it. Then or now. And I tried my best to keep an open mind walking into this one. It did not work. The album sounds like mush. Who produced this? Fuck your wall of sound bullshit. So no. Not a fan. This crap was forced down our throats for years in every store, dentist's office, television show, and radio station everywhere. With a straight blind listen, one can understand how it gained popularity. The songs have solid pop sensibilities; my bias is just too strong for this trash.

Pora labai gerų.

It's a really good album anyway here's wonderwall

Noooo. Why everyone is going mad for these boring arseholes is the exact representation of pack mentality. I do not like based on growing up with them everywhere. I'll listen regardless because dems da rules. ------------------- The definitely co-worker music who wants to appear edgy but is actually a bore. Plodding, atonal, derivative dad rock (and I'm a dad) with little redeemable qualities. Bore off. Reform rock. 1*

The hits are excellent. The rest is good enough. Their egos need to be put in check. They're a great band, but they're not God's gift to mankind. ★★★★

I’ve heard them too many times, but there are 4 classics here so I think it has to be 5 stars.

This is one of those albums where the huge songs are huge for a reason. I probably wouldn’t voluntarily put on “Wonderwall” at this point because I’ve heard it about a billion times, but dang if I don’t still sing along when it comes on. “Champagne Supernova” has been played to death too, but that one I’ll defend all day. It’s just a great song. “Don’t Look Back in Anger” might be my favorite though. That piano at the beginning immediately makes me think of “Imagine,” and the whole song just has that big, timeless feel to it. “She’s Electric” has Lennon/McCartney fingerprints all over it too. Oasis obviously wore the Beatles influence on their sleeve, but when the songs are this good I don’t really care. Then you’ve got the title track, which is just a banger. This album is loaded with songs that somehow feel massive without getting too polished or slick.

Princess Donut: "Carl, it's my favorite song!" We clearly need Wondercrawl on the list too.

It’s great, I can’t deny it, but I can’t help but echo the contemporary complaints of an overly poppy direction compared to their debut. The songwriting is so tight but they went a little too light o. The arrangement.

I continue to not really understand how oasis are as popular as they are. It’s a mediocre album, with a few good songs. That got inexplicably entwined with uk culture.

Big. Dumb. Stupid. Fun.

Me - Straight bangers I didn't realise were all on the same record. Wonderwall is jarring now tho My coworker Mike - Top 3 albums of all time 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

This is Brit-rock.

Reminds me of when I was a teenager. Good time.

Есть очень хорошие песни, но в целом, альбому чего-то не достает, под конец устаешь от этой музыки

That wave of British pop in the late 90’s and early 00’s is the best. What’s The Story Morning Glory is definitely a part of it. Is it my favorite Oasis album? I’m not sure. Bur what I can say is that release is very strong. Hello: 4 Roll With It: 3 Wonderwall: 5 Don’t Look Back In Anger: 5 Hey Now!: 4 The Swamp Song: 2 Some Might Say: 5 Cast No Shadow: 3 She’s Electric: 3 Morning Glory: 5 The Seamp Song - Version 2: Champagne Supernova: 5

90s classic

There are somgs on here that have been played to death but i wonder why that doesn’t shit me as much as someone like Creedence, for example, does? There is a case to be made that they are very similar bands and tunes. Not musically but some parallels exist - Fogerty claimed to be the genius behind it all and wrote all the tunes, the songs were derivative, there was a sense of formula to the songs, they were a hugely influential band, the band broke up given the ego of the songwriter and the tension between brothers, etc. i like the Oasis drummer more than Creedence’s. Maybe that’s it. Oasis is more of my time/prime. Not sure. I have never loved Oasis but nor have i fixated on how much their songs shit me. While I dont have much time for Oasis’ music, their reacks are inoffensive and they have a nice melodic sense about them. I can admire what seems to be a firm grasp of what elements are needed to make a hit song. You can’t tell me it wasnt an intentional action to write a song that all campfire guitarists could belt out regardless of ability when they wrote Wonderwall with no bass. I may mot want to listen to it again and again but i can admire their ability to put to page/music a collective consciousness type of thing. Why do I deny Creedence the same? Maybe the thing to do ia not over analyse but go with what Liam would probably say if he was criticising Creedence (though he has said he really likes them) - ‘Cause their shit!’

Fair to say this is my favourite Oasis album. I don't really like the other ones at all. To be fair I loved this album when it first arrived and for all least a decade afterwards. Maybe it was overplayed, by me or through external sources. Either way it's massively overrated in the UK and Oasis themselves are even more overrated. Still a decent album though!

Perfect.

Favourite Songs: Hello Don't Look Back In Anger

I find this hard to admit, as a long time Oasis hater, but this is a pretty great album. Particularly the second half, and especially the title track, which slaps. Yes, the lyrics are stupid and large parts of the album are lifted from the Beatles and other artists. But I've gotten to the point where I see the appeal here, and continuing to pretend I hate everything about Oasis just makes me feel like a classist. The whole "Oasis vs. Blur" thing was mostly a marketing stunt anyway I reckon.

Aye it’s a cracker alright. Not my favourite Manchester band by any stretch but the hits are hits for a reason. Top bops: Roll with it Don’t look back in anger Some might say She’s electric Morning glory Champagne supernova Acquiesce Headshrinker Underneath the sky

Obviously already knew this album well before this, but it really is just such a good album. The absolute swagger of Liam Gallaghers voice, Noel’s songwriting, then the production ties it all together. This album knows exactly what it wants to say.

Every song rocks

Love this album, with some of the clearest lyrics we've heard on the entire list. It's like the opposite of Tom Waits.

Very solid musicianship, feels like the band could have had much greater popularity if not for some egos (whether perceived versus real)

An iconic album. High four star but not quite a five for us. One of the two good Oasis albums.

My Ex-Wife once asked me to stop playing 'Wonderwall' on loop.... I SAID MAYYYYBEEEE! I owned this album at one point. I liked it then, but it's lost it's appeal. It's still got a couple decent songs though so I'll add Wonderwall, Morning Glory and Champagne Supernova to the playlist. Although I'm sure I'll probably remove Wonderwall at some point.

Pricks. Thought they were going to be the next Beatles. Like the Beatles, they did have some annoyingly catchy tunes, but in the 90's that just wasn't enough for Beatles-level fandom. Probably 3 star album, but I'm docking them one for being pricks.

Good brit pop

An all time classic, absolutely loved this when it came out, particularly as a working class northerner :-D

massively overrated for the nostalgia factor, no wonder I've never heard anything but the singles. 90s Beatles pastiche was never gonna be for me though. not actively enjoyable outside DLBIA and Champagne supernova.

Crazy that I got this album around the same time they announce the tour. ART. JUST ART.

13/20 ambiance 2000 campus universitaire buddy movie

I’m just not that big of an Oasis fan, I don’t know what it is. Even Wonderwall doesn’t do it for me.

Nice timing to get this after securing tickets to live 27… I’ve probably listened to this album the longest of any in my life, having first heard on cassette in 96 and here I am 30 years later. One of those perfect albums, where every track is essential, with a few massive songs and a few deeper album tracks which are just as good. Some Might Say and Champagne Supernova really hit today. Incredibly easy 5/5

enough bangers to get to 5*.

It pains me to give this a 3

Some classic crowd pleasing bangers, from a British perspective

todavia me falta

A 90s classic, this album has aged pretty well.
