Wish I liked this but though hugely influential its sadly awful. The dolls were never my thing, those that followed did it so much better.
Maybe it was completely unfounded but I genuinely had a visceral hatred of this album which is a masterclass in performance if they could invoke that emotion in music. I think I hated it the most so far and I don't know why
Weird shit. Not my jam.
Fuck. Just seeing this album cover annoys me. "Wouldn't it be so shocking if we dressed in drag for our album cover!?" "holy shit! You're a genius!" Also given the fact that they display lot of homophobia on their stage, this just makes me hate them prior to listening to them. But I will put visuals aside. And judge by my ears. Now... NEW YORK DOLLS! Iconic. I get that. I still stand by how much I hate punk or hard Rock of this nature. I just don't get it. The music in parts is really good! And if I were to go back to their appearance, the two don't coincide. But back to the music.. A lot of cool riffs. Some cliche parts but given that this was the 70s, it probably wasn't a cliche then. Vocald and lyrics! Alright. Fuck. Just God awful. How people find this type of out of tune, over theatric punk vocal style good are deaf. Bands like this, more so in modern times, are hindered by their vocalist. Just trying to be like NYDolls or The Ramones. I hate it. Fuck do I hate it. Lyrics are just bland and uninspiring. Give me the instrumental. But let's see some positives here. Like I said, a lot of cool guitar work. Some horns I hear? Interesting; surprising. The drums sound awful. In a few songs it sounds like he is drumming on some wet fish. Just slappy and wet. I don't know if that's the best way to describe it. But take it. Fuck this band.
Mostly feels like the same stupid song over and over
Could not get through this fast enough. Terrible.
Meh, just not a fan of punk.
There's no doubting their influence on punk, but I wasn't a big fan in the 70s, and I'm still not really a fan. My favourite track is "Jet Boy" and I remember them performing this on the Old Grey Whistle Test.
Wow this is horrible.
I never really got into the New York Dolls, they weren't really my thing. They're not very good, are they? Shite. 1 / 5 stars.
Actively disliked this one
Idk how to explain this but I kept thinking they're using song templates or something. One song just like the other
pussy repellant music
Sound quality overall bad on Spotify, didnt really want to listen to most of the album. Album sounds like a really bad version of 70s summer feel good music.
Let's be honest - that was one of the worst albums on this list so far, and I'm pretty sure this is not just my opinion. After doing some research, New York Dolls seem to be the best when performing live on stage. And hopefully that's true, because the quality of recording and total lack of energy or any special features is astounding. If someone will feel an urge to torture me in the future, just tie me to a chair, put this album on, and maybe for further punishment put it at 0.75x.
Meh.
Terrible
Not a fan :-(
Whack as fuck lmfao
The Dolls were punk before there was punk. The album, without the visual effect of their glam style, sounds like the same formula duplicated on each song. Even with Todd Rundgren producing he couldn’t save this. I’ll take early Stooges over this any day
Nee man
1.5
🥵
Badly made punk rock. Energy somewhat there but still very boring. Not animalistic, tongue-in-cheek, or classy. They wear their inspirations on the sleeve but are otherwise naked. VU, Rolling Stones, Bowie I assume. Feels like I have heard the same songs done better 100x over. Fav song - pick any of them they all sound the same
Every song sounds identical and uses the same 12 bar blues riff. I definitely did not need to listen to this before dying Fav song: lonely planet boy
Geluisterd, maar niet voor herhaling vatbaar..
Meh, nothing special.
no. i don’t know really what to say but just no. you either like this music or you don’t and i very much do not.
If one were to take a list of major label acts in history that weren't successful but deemed to be influential due to "attitude" over talent and songwriting and then cross-reference it with acts I don't like.... the Venn diagram is probably a circle. Hello New York Dolls. Here: let me introduce you to an album of 2-3 chord songs with horrible singing, poor musicianship, and barely-held-together arrangements. Ah but they were bucking social tradition! ...which I support 100%. But insert the modern meme here: "um...sirs, this is a Wendy's" - you're recording an album here. I suspect this became a critics' darling kinda album because of how shocking their act/dress were at such a legitimately dangerous time for it. Would and do completely support that, it's just the simple problem that this is unquestionably and definitively not one of the 1001 (10001) albums I'd like to hear again before I die. As with all of them, I'm judging this on the music. Put this in my Venn file and toss it in the dumpster. 2/10 1 star
💀
This album just isn't for me. I don't really like the vocals and the songs feel like they drag on forever.
Not for me.
Eine weitere ganz und gar überflüssige Platte mit uninspiriertem Songwriting, dass keiner braucht.
Listening to the album from the perspective of almost 50 years later, it's hard to find much in the way of special there. There’s not even a single redeeming song.
Bryr mig verkligen inte om det här? Does not spark joy
I just didn't like this. Not my thing.
No
Not for me.
