Reviews (page 7 of 8)
Two star.
It's really low quality but it's really catchy.
Ok 2/5
Always though Johansen and his group were a poor Bowie ripoff. A few decent tracks here, but meh overall.
Why was this on the list? Maybe because they influenced a lot of hair metal bands? The music was not incredible. There's nothing I'm coming back to on this album, but now I can say I've heard New York Dolls. This album was a new York 2. It would have been a three in other cities, but... New York has higher criteria.
I imagine this was great in 1973. Don't get me wrong, it's not 'bad' but it just did nothing for me at all. It's proto-punk so it wasn't quite fully formed yet. I'm not a big punk fan as it is, so this is just even worse for my tastes. Nothing jumped out and grabbed me, nothing stood out, I couldn't hum you a tune from the album as soon as I finished. I was somewhat bored throughout. Again, it's not bad, but there have been albums that sound bigger, badder, stronger, louder and heavier than this since its release 52 years ago so this is just a bit of a time capsule of a record.
It started out ok - pretty fun in fact. But it wore on me as the album went on and ended up being pretty tiring.
point9.
Didn't vibe with this at all really.
Nothing stood out to me in this album. It was just fine
Prince is not my favorite, but no respect the craft put into this album
Lovely message, punk as hell, and hard to see how they fit. I just wasn't feeling the music though
An important band for its time and for those influenced by them. More melodic than The Stooges of their time. Buster before he was buster.
Mix between the clash and the Ramones? Unfortunately I'm not a fan of either... I think American punk lasted longer because there were less rules about what is and isn't punk. It's decent background music
Classic 70s punk, hearing influences of The Ramones and Iggy Pop.
There was nothing inherently wrong with it, but honestly all of the songs sounded the same. It's interesting that in our modern age a common criticism of recent music is that it all sounds the same, but then this exists in the 70s? Food for thought. Any of these songs could stand solidly on it's own but listening to the album together just makes them all feel repetitive
Past 1st track Personality Crisis which is a good enough tune this is a big long stale glam rock trudge. The guitar riffs are punky and fine but the vocals suck big time and act like a bulldozer in drag over songs which which mostly tend to sound the same after a certain point anyway. 2.5 stars
I get the feeling I could enjoy this album a lot more if I understood the lyrics. Maybe I'll listen against with lyrics in hand. But for now...... It's just generic punk?? A harder version of The Clash?. I was reading they were one of the first and kudos to them for going against the on going homophobia of those years. But it's not really music I dig.
These guys do have a very early punk sounds for 1973 and can likely be attributed to feeding into the early genesis of that genre. A pretty good rough rock and roll sound throughout.
Proto-Punk bores me. I understand it is a precursor to the wider musical movement that became punk rock and it has it's place as an influence, but it's an era totally spoiled by what came after it. This album is utterly forgettable musically if listened to today if you have ever heard anything more hardcore than the E street band. I actually googled this one because I never understand why all these white bread middle of the road acts end up on a list of most important albums and wiki tells me that this punk precursor was reactionary to the 'sophistication' of prog rock that was on top at the time. Yea man I'm really gonna show those snooty prog rock guys by making a dogshit uninteresting album.
Early in my listen of this album, I became bored and checked the wikipedia page to see that this has received the mark of the Antichrist himself: Robert Christgau. How he gave this a A and gave Raw Power a B+ is totally beyond me. Probably because Iggy wasn't a NYC/Village rat. This album is a fun novelty of the early days of punk and you can see the influence here, probably. The lyrics are nonsense, the vocals are okay at times, the instrumentation and production are serviceable. There's one good song on here and the rest I hope to never have to hear again except maybe in a Gitmo 'advanced interrogation room' Highlights: Jet Boy
Important, but boring.
Glad I listened to it because of the influence they’ve had, but don’t really want to listen to it again.
Didn’t excite at all really… probably doesn’t deserve a 1 but doesn’t quite reach the heights of 2… oh go on then, I’ll be nice
This was alright, but didn't leave an impression
Just some early pinkish rock
There are just so many better albums in this genre. Nothing stood out to me, but probably fun live.
Meh.
I dont think they can be famous for being the band that inspired the idea of a more famous band
4/10. Listenable but didn’t enjoy a whole lot of it.
Blind album and artist. This is one of those bands that my fiance and I would call a Walmart Band. A knockoff of a better band. A store brand band vs the name brand band. Why would you listen to the store brand when you have the name brand? To save money. This band is cheaper.
too sloppy punk for me. I’m sure they put a lot of effort to sound that sloppy though. i like the cover.
Boring listen, it's all attitude with no real substance. The tracks are mostly boring and underdeveloped, the production is unpolished on purpose I presume, but it's just not good. Best song: Personality Crisis Worst song: Private World Cover check: Grabs your attention, but just like the music it's wannabe edgy and has no real debt
This is music song. Vocals are not it. Instrumentals don't really do it for me. 2.
Seventies punk that's just like a harder Rolling Stones.
#368. This sounds a bit like a bastard love child of Kiss and The Ramones or something, and not in a good way [if there ever could be a good way] 2/5: pass
OK straight forward rock music with mediocre vocal and pretty bad lyrics - very banal and repetitive.
Always start an album with a guttural scream. More unhinged Rolling Stones. The first three songs were pretty generic classic rock. I enjoyed the softer 4th song Lonely Planet Boy. The perfect album to listen to 30 seconds of each song and move on to the next. 4/10
Made it all the way through but its a one and done for me.
Singer is dumb, song structures are dumb generic punk
Little too screamy for me
It was ok I guess. Didn't enjoy it so much.
01) Personality Crisis - 6,5 02) Looking for a Kiss - 6,0 03) Vietnamese Baby - 5,5 04) Lonely Planet Boy - 6,0 05) Frankenstein (Orig.) - 5,5 06) Trash - 6,5 07) Bad Girl - 5,5 08) Subway Train - 6,0 09) Pills - 5,5 10) Private World - 6,0 11) Jet Boy - 5,5 TOTAL: 5,86 (59/100) Current ranking: 250/302
Kinda odd, but could see it being a 70's thing
I knew this would eventually happen. My propensity to give out three stars and have that mean "OK but Meh" to "Yeah, this is actually pretty good!" is finally here to burn me. Because there is nothing "wrong" with the New York Dolls, no technical faults, the musicians are solid, lyrics... But the punk movement has a serious side to it. Even the songs that were purposefully a bit tongue in cheek were laced with anti-establishment, rebellious edges. It was a social movement. I think of post-punk and Rage against the Machine and the "fuck you I won't do what you tell me" lyric that became more and more dead serious and rage inducing. We demand change! But with the Dolls? I never got that sense of seriousness, it is as if they thought "yeah, we can do this" and had fun and all but was any of it real? It is just not there for me.
Nothing spectacular outside of early punk. Thankful that Johnny Thunders went on to create the Heartbreakers - but aside from that? Meh.
This is ok I guess, the guys voice really grates
Impactful? Yes. Just not my cup of tea.
meh protopunk. Nothing I heard felt very revolutionary to the scene, and songs were very similar sounding.
More glammy rock? Slade in a public toilet? Or a pre-cursor to punk? The Sex Pistols are always viewed as original, but this is halfway there. Less posey-sounding than, again, Slade, as well. It's not life-changing or complex. By 'Trash' and 'Bad Girl', it wears your patience a bit. Too many weak songs, really. 'Pills' is poor. 'Personality' is more appealing, catchier. The energy is contagious, if basic. Quite a lot of fun. 'Jet Boy' is a fun ending after a bunch of filler songs.
Not really a fan of this one at all.
It's alright punk music. I don't regret listening to it but I don't need to hear it again. Didn't hate it but didn't really like it either.
Some of the better Punk I've heard here, and Personality Crisis really clicked, but Punk is Punk, so it can only go so far.
Meh. Didnt hate it.
It's not bad, interesting sound (I keep thinking Elton John if he tried punk), just not really my vibe.
I'm sure seeing this group live was something special - but the studio recordings just don't really do it for me.
Reminds me of a rougher version of the Rolling Stones. Not for me.
Kinda sounds like Great White with a shitty lead singer. Not a fan.
Shrug,not for me
No doubt influential. But also no doubt that it sounds awful. I’m so bored of how similar most of the albums on this list sound.
Found this very repetitive. Didn't really do anything for me.
This doesn’t really do anything for me.
Blah! Why?
Hmm... a band that prominently performed in drag and were often rejected by labels out of fear they were gay? On the first of June?! Wow. Of all the coincidences pertaining to this project, this may be one of the funniest yet. As for the album itself? I didn't really care for it much. It's a pretty run-of-the-mill 70s hard rock album. The singing is okay. Not bad, but it doesn't really stand out. The instrumental sound is solid. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with it. It, again, just doesn't stick in my head. The writing is 70s rock writing. They sing about drugs and women. What a surprise. Overall, It definitely feels like an early Rolling Stones album. I don't really like early Rolling Stones that much. I see the value in the album, but it doesn't really appeal much to me myself. High 2/5.
American punk. About as good as Brit punk. Nothing special here.
Mostly much ado about not terribly much, primarily because it's so performative and derivative — playacted Bowie, Stones, Mott, T Rex, bit of Velvets — and feels more like a something/anything than the thing itself. There is a high degree of tedium for all the sleaze, when one can be forgiven for expecting flash and glamor. “Frankenstein” is scary bad and “Trash” aptly named. Feels a bit too gritty to be glam and occasionally too poppy (soft and tame) to be punk. The outfits are stupid and this is a band one can safely forget about however long one has before death. “Lonely Planet Boy” “Subway Train,” “Jet Boy” are the only passable cuts. The fakery and posturing make the Strokes seem singer-songwriter-level earnest and authentic. That Malcolm McLaren learned from them sounds about right – and probably poetic justice for all concerned. Ultimately feels like Kiss – a concept packaged and marketed to a cohort that no doubt liked to think itself as much more sophisticated than Kiss fan.
Trash. 1.63
I wanted to like this, but I just didn't. It rates too low on musicality for me to really get into it.
Glam rock version of the Rolling Stones. Also reminds me of the Clash at times. The songs are not very good. Production is better than I expected. It seems a lot longer than it is. Favorite song: trash.
Maybe generous, but I was in a good mood and listening with my gf who was having fun with it.
Uninspired, though perhaps influential.
Nothing special
Beskidt rock før der var punk og glam, indflydelsesrigt, men samtidig heller ikke overvældende
Not for me. I just don’t like punk. 2
ilman tätä lbumia, musiikkia ei olisi olemassa... miettikääpä sitä hetkeksi, kun istutte..vittu syömässä paskaasi suuhun.. kun leipäläpeesi laitat läskiä... mietippä sitä... hyvä energia, hyviä biisejasdf siellä täälllä. odotin puoli tuntia ennen päättymistä että millon loppuisi hohhoijjaaa, narri tuo seuraava albumi huohhhhhoijjaaa pää poikki... Nobody is above the law especially the law of God the harvest is ready.. frankesntein
Didnt really feel this, sorry. The history sounds cool but i wouldnt listen to any of these again.
Kinda left me cold.
- Apparently the New York Dolls walked so that KISS could run? - Fun sound, but nothing truly jumps out and I am not sure why this particular album is being cited for being noteworthy. I guess just how early this sound was emerging?
2/5 should prob give it another listen and another chance ngl i wasn't really focused today
There's no doubting the influence of the New York Dolls on the punk scene but while the opening track rocks along nicely enough, this is actually quite a dull album. You could forgive the rudimentary musicianship if there were a few memorable tunes but there really is nothing to write home about
Not feeling it at all.
When looking at the genres for this album, you may expect something closer to David Bowie, perhaps The Stooges, or maybe even KISS. What I was not expecting was the Rolling Stones performed by another band. Obviously these are all original tracks, but everything exudes the same energy as the rock 'n' roll tracks you'll find on Exile on Main St, with very little to make it feel like its own thing, save for a lyric or two being a bit more eclectic comparatively. It leads to an album that I'm sure is fun for that roots rock approach with a tinge of punk mentality, but in my eyes it is an album with a poor singer (and not gruff; poor) and songs that tend to drag, which the album itself does. There are times where it decides to be more appealing and take a momentary break from the electric guitar, but then the before mentioned vocals kill it for me. At best, you're listening to something that would probably be more fun to actually perform than listen to, so boot up that copy of Rock Band and go at it, I guess. I'll sit this session out, you have fun.
Rocks hard but didn't grab me
Looks like I hate punk.
70s Punk Rock. Clearly identifiable sound, but didn't resonate with me personally.
Just a drag.
new york dolls
While ahead of its time, the level of maturity and lacking musicianship turns the value of this music down.
not much to say about. mix of hard rock and punk. 5.5/10
4.5/10 Shock, this list has another bluesy punky hard rock record on it Very much an American sounding hard rock album from the 70s, so not really my thing Production makes it sound like a live performance, lends it a good vibe Wikipedia says this is campy and humorous but I found it overly earnest and maybe try-hard Really influenced by the Rolling Stones - the singer should back the Jagger off a bit Best: Frankenstein
Found this album difficult to finish, quite surprised because I thought I'd enjoy it but I suppose I was wrong.
old rock kinda punky its okay not my vibe
No.
Not really my cup of tea
Not a favorite
i just don't vibe on 70s garage style rock
Not for me
Stereotypical classic rock album Decent but nothing amazing
Not really a fan of a lot of 70’s punk. Repetitive noise with a decent song every once in a while.
Probably some historical context but not a very enjoyable listen at face value.
First song rest are meh
This whole album sounds like the bump music that leads into a scene of white trash people in an apartment. None of the songs really stand out to me. Just didn’t really enjoy the music, or much about this album.
Very reminiscent of early 80s punk rock. I like it, but I wouldn't listen to a whole album at one time. This is music that needs to be put on shuffle.
I've been getting a LOT of punk recenlty and this just didn't live up to many of the others I've gotten so far. Not bad per se but didn't fully connect. 2.5/5
Just feels like a punkier version of the stones but not as good? Maybe I will change my mind
I had a randomly assigned college roommate that was a punk rocker. Not a throwback punk wannabe — remember this was contemporaneous with the era. And he was in LOVE with the New York Dolls. His #1 music choice. He didn’t so much play them as identify with them. So it wasn’t their music he loved; it was the rebellion that they stood for. I asked him once why he was so into punk. His answer without hesitation was, “Because I hate my mother.” And you have to admit that NYD is perfect music if you hate your mother. My music tastes are much more eclectic now than then. I didn’t listen to NYD at all back then, and I wish now that I had put it on and rocked out with him. Oh it’s not great; it sounds like someone doing a Stones impression but trying to make it edgier. But to me it’s an example of how music can bridge worlds — if you let it. All I am saying is, give music a chance.
It was okay
Wasn't a fan
Punk not my thing
Not a fan of punk, I guess.
Absolute cheese and not good cheese. Like those dairylea cheesestring knock-offs which are shit.
i've got 3 albums to go and the majority of the 1001 has been shite. this album perfectly sums up the whole list. a supposedly genre defining album that is completely uninteresting. something that was surely exciting and raw when it was new but is now stuck as a bang average record when you remove the visual, their lifestyle, where it was from and pretty much any context. i bet i get 3 more neil fucking young albums to finish the list off.
An untimely death that stirs you so much that you go out and commit multiple murders. Will I be caught though? Do they know who I am? Whisper it, Nigel Spackman.
I’d say 2.5, it’s like classic rock just not not something I’d see myself listening too. But I see the appeal
It just didn't keep my attention. I'm sure it was very influential for proto punk but wasn't hitting for me
Good for a pre-punk album in the early 70s. The guitar from Personality Crisis sounds exactly like another song I can't place. I love the drag album art. The fact that this is on 1001 albums list shows a lot about the old white dudes who made this list; it's a nostalgia piece and part of the punk story but does not stand up on its own as one of the 1001 best albums of all time.
Sounds like something I should like, and they probably inspired a lot of what I like in terms of rock and punk, but it’s just not something I enjoyed. Pills was decent but it mostly sounded like a Stones tribute act writing their own songs
Although this is really not my thing, I was actually surprised by how much I enjoyed listening to the beginning of the album! I found the first 3 tracks quite fun but as time passed by it felt really quite long and a real drag by the time I got to Pills. I think each track is way too long and perhaps I'd enjoy this live if I was dancing and I like the look of the band's outfits and make up so it could have been fun to see them live in the 70s. Maybe it's just not the right thing for a WFH Friday on the sofa...
A New York punk album that created the style for many bands to follow. Pretty interesting this was such a well like album by many bands. Well before my time and a genre that doesn’t generally appeal to me. This may be liked but to me it wasn’t that exciting. This was harder rock but with too much punk sound for me to really like it. 4.6/10
2.5
ok
Nothing special in my opinion.
I get it but not for me.
I found this quite boring. I know it's proto punk, but it's really closer to the Rolling Stones than punk. I didn't find the songwriting very interesting.
ughhhhh. boring and generic. i got a little nauseous listening to this.
I wanted to like this, but I found it a bit grating and annoying. You can feel their influence on later bands though.
Nä det här var inget vidare
A genre and sound that I tend to like. But ultimately the album didn't give much to desire or remember
Wasn’t a super big fan of this. Everything blended together and nothing really stood out.
If this is “Your favorite band’s favorite band’s favorite band”, then can it really be considered one of the greatest ever? Like how doctors have learned to not bleed people to get the sickness out, hair metal has evolved.
C- Personality Crisis - 2. Looking For a Kiss - 2. Vietnamese Baby - 3. Lonely Planet Boy - 2. Frankenstein - 3. Trash - 3. Bad Girl - 1. Subway Train - 3 Pills - 1 Private World - 2 Jet Boy - 2
Achava que já conhecia alguma coisa da banda. Certamente não é nada deste disco. Que tem a sua importância na formação do punk, segundo a wiki. Não me empolgou, som no máximo divertido.
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah, was decent as an introduction to them Favourite song: Track 6 - Trash
It's a lot more interesting to me hearing the source of inspiration for so many other artists than it is as a music album. I'm sure they put on a great show
I am so underwhelmed by this album, but I can only recall how I felt about other albums which redefined music during that era, such as the Stooges or Velvet Underground. Today, this is a 2. After a couple more listens, I could see that improving.
Early American punk sounds. Very much in the same vein as iggy pop. Decent sounds, but very much an influential band. Not high on my list to listen again
Yeah I guess it does sound like a shitty punk version of the Rolling Stones
It's fine. Not really into early punk.
Too rowdy for me
I liked the sounds on this one. The heavy guitar was great. The problem is that it’s too repetitive, no melodies here are that great or memorable. Don’t think i’ll be revisiting soon.
Not enougth oi, too tame
Lame plastic punk, no sense of righteous anger
Trash is my favorite or PrivateWorld. I like how they lean in to the old school rock n roll thing. I don’t like his vocals. Some cool stuff at the end of Jet boys. Most of this album didn’t really do any thing for me.
first song is basically just wailing, the instrumentals aren't bad though. Lookin for a kiss is essentially the same as personality crisis. Couldn't really tell you what vietnamese baby was like. Lonely Planet Boy is actually pretty decent. Frankenstein had some refreshing punk vibes. Bad girl gives me some AC/DC vibes and I dig it. Subway train is actually a well put together song that you can just cruise around town with.
I get how this would be revolutionary but fuck early american punk kinda sucks. annoying but I respect their vibe. best tracks: personality crisis, trash
qsy 6/10
Generic punk. All sounds the same. Fine but forgettable
While I enjoyed a song or two, the whole album felt waaay toooo loooonngggg
Not really a fan of Glam punk
More generic punk. Just kind of boring. I get it's super influential and my favorite bands probably wouldn't exist without it, but I MAKE THE RULES HERE. Two outta fiiive
Obvious influence on punk. Sounds like punks emulating Rolling Stones with added aggression and poor vocals. Not awful, but not my taste.
Ooof
Punk stuff
um...
I think I've had a similar reaction as with Motorhead. Lots of sound and fury but doesn't go anywhere or mean anything to me. Good to listen to as a "history lesson," but nothing much to return to.
Best Song: Personality Crisis. Kicking the album off aggressively, before you realize that this is the only setting this band has. Worst Song: Looking For A Kiss. I hate this desperate, clingy, girl-harassing motif common to music of this era. Overall: Noisy in an ugly way.
I have nothing against it but it’s all been done so much better and this doesn’t add anything to the world
Doet me een beetje aan de Rolling Stones denken. Niet meteen iets waar ik heel erg van geniet. Leuk groepje dat muziek maakt. Het zal live vast gezellig zijn. **
I didn't think I was going to know any of these songs. Immediately knew the first one. The cover of this album made me think we were getting glam rock or something with a big sound. This was just regular rock music. Good but a little boring 4/10
I suppose they were one of the pre-punk pioneers along with other American bands like the Stooges & Ramones, but to me, NYD don't have the punk spirit - I get more of a kitschy rock n' roll vibe from them. I'm surprised so many critics loved them from the start. Usually bands like this get praised in retrospect.
I have to give a nod to this album for its cutting edge influence on punk in the early 70s when everyone else was into prog, but I think the Velvet Underground, Iggy and the Ramones did it better.
Not flowy enough for my liking. Also, didn’t like the voice, too much screaming, not enough singing.
old school punk rock I think these are drag queens which is something
Wait, so does this album imply that overproduced punk = glam rock? No wonder both genres can be annoying.
Just fine
I can definitely see how this was a precursor to punk rock, but I didn't enjoy it much. None of the tracks really grabbed my attention.
Est-ce qu'un jour je pourrai réapprendre à aimer autre chose que de la pop
trop occupée à trimballer ma vie dans un sac ikea, j'ai possiblement oublié ce que j'ai écouté
It may be easy to judge this record with modern ears several decades after it was released, but this is lazy, unoriginal music based on the standard '50s-revivalist framework of the same tired chord progressions we've heard over and over for far too long - even for back then. It's only dangerous in the sense that it sounds like somebody gambled on marketing an LP made by brain-damaged Lesser Apes on a booze-and-cocaine bender during one of those "lost weekends" that should have stayed lost. Next to the Stooges and the MC5, this is bubblegum from the bottom of your shoe. (Use Lou Reed to scrape it off, but be sure to wash thoroughly after.)
Not my personal fave.
Hmm. This website totally thinks I'm in a different time zone. It's 11pm and a few moments ago it was telling me this album was tomorrow's album, and didn't show me The Byrds one at all. (Which I listened to and found pleasant enough. I liked "Thoughts and Words.") I didn't have much fun with the Dolls here. I get the appeal of attitude and image. I don't want to undersell the importance of that stuff and get all snooty about songs and musicianship and whatnot, because I like plenty of bands and songs that aren't performed by the most skilled musicians ever. But good crikey the bulk of this record sounds like a less nuanced version of the Stones to me. This is like Greta Van Fleet level imitation. And without being able to visually appreciate the attitude and image, I didn't have much to cling to. I sort of like the "Frankenstein" song, but it should've ended a solid thirty seconds before it actually ended. There were a few others in the back half that felt like they were approaching something at least less obviously influenced by The Rolling Stones, but overall... this feels to me like a band that probably got a lot of press simply by having the words "New York" in their name. So I'm giving them 2 New York stars.
I know these guys were very influential, but it's not something I need to listen to again.
I thought i was gonna like it but I didn’t really care for it. I found it fairly forgettable and not very unique. It’s not as energetic as punk but it’s not as interesting as glam rock. The Wikipedia says “New York Dolls was an influential precursor to the 1970s punk rock movement as the group's crude musicianship and youthful attitude on the album challenged the prevailing trend of musical sophistication in popular music, particularly progressive rock.” I will never understand this. yeah I get that the point of punk rock was to make oversimple, unimaginative music just to stick it to the old rock gods. Just because that was the point doesn't somehow make the music worthwhile. Punk rockers wanted to be cool but they didn't have any musical ability or understanding, so they tried to convince everyone that having talent and songwriting ability was pompous and arrogant. Sophistication is super cool, if you can also write good music. I know this is somewhat tangential to my thoughts about this specific album, but why should I care
Missed this one out for ages so had to go back. Yeah it was fine.
I was never a fan of the New York Dolls. I thought their style and persona made them more popular than their musical ability. Looking back at early punk, I think the Velvet Underground with Lou Reed and John Cale were much more creative and talented.
New York balls.
What could be a serviceable garage rock LP is cratered by over-the-top, cringe-inducing lyrics. Instrumentals and production generally bop, just can't stand the lead singer trying way too hard to wring comedy from what should be an easy performance to nail
not even glam rock that i like
I think it would have been a kick-ass time to see this band live back in the day. Exuberant and naughty. I just don't feel that I ever need to listen to this record again. Not something I enjoy listening to outside of that context. My old nerves.
A few good tracks but I’m a bit burnt out on punk
i’m kind of burnt out on punk at this point, not sure i took the time with this album that i should have
loud rock, but nothing that I could latch onto
Meh
Please like this shit?
Complete disregard to specifying when they mean FRANKENSTEIN and when they mean FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER. If that's punk, I'm out.
woah this seems very ahead of its time. I would have guessed glam rock. Not an album I need to listen to again, but nice for a first listen.
A bit annoying, but quality wise is not that bad
Ik hoor het niet…
didn't listen to much but what i did made me cringe it's sort of hair metal like not proper punk or anything ...
tråkigt
leuk maar niet wauw
Mikä laulaen tulee se viheltäen menee. Melkosta rallattaelua.
Ei mun juttu, mut meni
I get that this is pushing things forward in 1974. A steppingstone between Glam and Punk. Just didn’t enjoy listening to it.
I did not like this album. The instrumentation was good in parts, but the lyrics and voices just weren't for me. I'll give it 2 stars, but it's basically a 1.5.
Interesting missing link between the stones and punk rock
idk man
Meh, not for me.
Not a fan at all. I wanted to hurry up and get through this album asap. Overall, the album was just boring to me. Nothing stood out as something I’d want to hear again or was particularly unique. Personality Crisis wasn’t too bad. It sounded like something I’d hear on the classic rock station, but wouldn’t think to add it to my playlist. Frankenstein wasn’t too bad. I liked most of it except the vocals. He sounded drunk and sloppy. Wasn’t feeling that at all. Trash is the first song so far in which I like the vocals. I actually kind’ve like Bad Girl a lot. Song is easy to follow and vocals are good.
Eh ok. Early punk rock. Not really for me.
LES GOOOOOO! Right from the get-go, very energetic and fun. Still not the best album at all 2/5
Nota:4/10
Glam rock
Couldn’t really get into this one bar the few songs I knew
noisy
Not what I expected. It started off well but got a bit boring half way through.
No good.
why was this on the last :/ mediocre hard rock w bad lyrics and singing. 4/10
The rendition of Someone's in the Kitchen with Dinah was .. weird? 4
4/10 Mind-numbingly mediocre.
Has aged badly
tunes are good
Generic music, annoying vocals.
not a huge fan of this band. lyrics were not intriguing but musically a few songs were good.
sounds like an overproduced Ramones.
Emt, semitråkigt Classic rock men mycket generic kändes det som
really didn't do anything for me
Meh
ok i guess. proto punk
Some okay songs, some bad ones. Not really my type of music.
not a huge fan of the sound. maybe they were pioneers, but that aint for me brug
I can see the significance but I don't think this has aged as well as say The Stooges's stuff.
Fairly one dimensional. Singers awful. I guess you need to be invested in the whole sleazy New York punk vibe!
What a lousy album! This may be punk rock from 1973 - but it's simply terrible!
I've tried, broham, I really have. I love glam rock – and not only "high glam" like Bowie but "low glam" like Slade and Sweet. I appreciate some of these songs when done by others (Teenage Fanclub feat. Donna Matthews's "Personality Crisis"). I'm definitely good with lots of music that's messy and of dubious intonation. I like Jean Genet. I like "Drag Race." I like the Ramones, brodie, for chrissakes! A lot. And I understand the Dolls' role in cultural history, broseph, really I do. I think the thrift-shop androgyny is often unflattering in its more peacocky form, but it's also very nostalgic for me as it was my main aesthetic from around '96–'03 – and I get that this is "proto-punk," that "flattering" per se is not their aim. I think the Shangri-Las quote is cute (especially because I first encountered it via the Nation of Ulysses, just a weird little meme making its way down the river of life). In the end I just don't care about their cultural importance – and the New York Dolls I think would agree with me there: Cultural importance is not what these sweeties were aiming for, brobriath. Maybe we'll party together in the afterlife and I'll get it, but until then I guess it just comes down to I hate David Johansen's voice and this music sounds like ass.
Nope.
Meh
Junk
Atrocious
Not for me. 1/5
No.
Not a fan
No thanks
Nope. Should have never given these people any kind of notoriety. Wish I could give it/them zero stars
i really dislike punk
Personality Crisis is definitely pretty glam. It's got the shouty punk vocals though. The piano is almost giving 1950s rock n roll, but after that the album settles into the proto punk I was expecting. It's not particularly fast, or frankly interesting. There's definitely some variety, a sort of ballad (Lonely Planet Boy) to go along with the midtempo rockers, and the longer Frankenstein is one of the better cuts. Trash ends up being actively annoying with the vocal refrain ("traaaash"... yeah, it is.) Whenever I think there's something promising, like the intro riff on Bad Girl, the song goes in a different and more boring direction. Subway Train is hard to get through, especially the first half (the vocals again). Less talk more rock please. Whatever this is, I'm done with it. Bottom marks feels harsh but I just can't imagine playing it again.
not my style of punk
wow, this did absolutely nothing to me. except maybe causing overwhelming boredom.
Just another below average anglo rock band I didn't need to hear. I wonder if there's a Turkish rock band that's created something better, as it couldn't be that hard.
Not my thing. It’s very loud!
I absolutely cannot stand this type of rock. I'm sure many enjoy it but I'm not one of them. Couldn't wait for this album to end.
A load of songs that just sounded the same and played maybe 3 notes between them
Lead singer shouts the song title on repeat while guitars play in the background.
Yikes
Really not a fan of this type of music, I understand that the New York Dolls inspired most Glam Rock and Hair Metal bands but I just got nothing out of this.
Rolling Stone wannabes and really not that great. 2/10
1.0 Its only saving grace was that its short
Ugh. Each song sounds the same.
Pas tout écouter
J’aime pas mais frakenstein ça va
i do not like punk. but these guys look awesome.
> The New York Dolls created punk before there was a word for it. The Stooges would like a word. Listening to this and knowing that New York Dolls is one of Robert Christgau's favourite bands suddenly puts his smattering of debased reviews in their place. The critical reverence for this band and album serve as evidence of the illusory, self-congratulatory echo chamber that music critics inhabit. Hell, I undertook the 1001 challenge to enhance my understanding of what constitutes "acceptable greatness" in music critique. I postulate that critical approval lacks objective criteria, and I submit this album as evidence. Every single thing this album does, another album does better.
Tiresome boring nonsense. No need for this noise pollution.
punk
*No music. Just screaming vocal and banging instruments
Not crazy about it.
Trash is accurate
Punk rock on display. Not my kinda style of music.
Everything I've ever heard from the New York Dolls always made me feel like they're deeply lame. Listening to the album now just confirmed that for me. Such a boring punk-ish album. Not a single memorable song 1/5
Not much for me here
When you ask your mom for a Rolling Stones album, but she says we have The Rolling Stones at home. This was a tough one for me to fight through. These guys are just a bad mix of Billy Joel, the Stones and Elton John. Artist I like and respect, these guys don’t do them any justice. 2.8/10 #76/1001
Eh, it's a very rough, unpolished, gritty version of a mashup between KISS and Rolling Stones. Most of the songs, the lead singer is just screaming at the top of his lungs off key; the lead guitar seems hesitant to actually make something unique; and the songs were.... fomulaic. Overall, it sounded like an exec and a desparate band decided to make a rough copy of KISS and Rolling Stones, only to come out with a worse sounding alternative and even worse record sales. I can't comment on the influence it's had as the jangling, disjointed guitar solos are still rattling my brain.
The New York Dolls have never inspired me, and this time is no different. There’s nothing here I can connect with.
Couldn’t make it through 3 songs
I could barely make it thought more than a few songs and found this extremely unappealing. Sorry!
Bad. I can definitely hear how this was influential on later punk but every album on this list was important in some way. Got the impression of the same song over and over again and nothing left a mark on me. The fact I made it through this album TWICE without liking a single song is really unusual for me.
Horrible, obnoxious and extremely derivative. Sounds exactly like an album generated by an AI-bot with 70s glam rock inputs. Hard pass
Schrittrock für die Tonne
This isn’t punk. It’s posture.
I guess this might be one of those groups that's popular for their stage presence? Because the music was the most generic glam/hair metal sound I've ever heard and did absolutely nothing for me
Обычное глэмовское дерьмо. Самый непонятный мне жанр из всех жанров рока. Надеюсь, что такой фигни в списке будет мало. Заслуженные 1/5.
Boring shit
Meh, 1/5 for Trash.
Didn't care for it.
Not for me
According to the wiki article this band and album inspired the punk rock that was to follow. Thank you very much NOT. Inspiring a bunch of punk rock "singers" again thank you very much. This album is not actually that bad but I can't forgive it for the utter garbage that it inspired.
Ugh. Bad music and weirdo hair
Pretty boring dad rock and roll. not punk enough, the playing isn't very interesting.
There is no reason this album should make any Top 1001 if you actually listened to it. I tried it once before when I read it was a "must listen". David Johansen is a frontman, not a singer. They made it cool to dress as women and go full glam, that was their contribution to popular music and they set the table for a lot of 80's hair bands to follow. Even the one "hit", Personality Crisis, is hard to listen to in its entirety. Musically it's no better than an Alice Cooper or Kiss album from the same general time. They may have been fun to see live and to feel the energy firsthand but this is not an album anyone "must" hear, ever. One star for trying and for visual influences.
A punk record without the usual punk energy. High 1.
Not my cup of tea. For a band called New York Dolls, this sure oozes british slop. Best Song: Personality Crisis Worst Song: Lonely Planet Boy
Haven't listened to them before. Reminded me of the Rolling Stones. Didn't like them either. 3/10
Already listened, couldn’t bring myself to relisten for this
this is like if the rolling stones couldn't sing (ie somehow more of a disgrace to the black origins of rock n roll). it's like punk music made exclusively by people who have been kicked in the head by horses
1. criziz - 1.5 2. kizz - 1.5 3. baby - 1.5 4. boy - 1 5. frank - 1 6. trazh - 1 7. bad girl - 1 8. train - 1 9. pillz - 1 10. private - 1 11. jet - 1
There is nothing good here
While I can respect them as musicians, this album did absolutely nothing for me and I couldn't wait for it to end. It was very boring and mind numbing.
Meh
only because no stars isn't an option
Twangy, loud noise..instruments don't blend together
nope.
Ekki fyrir mig
Nun ja ...
