Really good album from a band I'd never heard of. The general tone is airy, but within that there is a decent variety of sounds, ranging from some country/folk vibes in the first half of the album, to a more pulsing, synthy 2000s pop-rock sound in the latter half.
★★★★☆ I went into this album knowing absolutely nothing about Django Django, other than seeing them described as art rock. I thought there might be something here I'd enjoy, but I wasn't expecting to discover such an interesting band. This is exactly why I love doing the 1,001 Albums project. Right away, I was struck by how much this sounded like something from the '70s or '80s rather than 2012. As the album progressed, I kept hearing different influences. Devo, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, White Denim, and even the Moody Blues all came to mind. That's a pretty bizarre combination, but somehow it works. There's psychedelic rock, electronic music, new wave, and some genuinely funky rhythms all mixed together. At times, it sounds like Devo if they'd formed in the 2000s. The opening stretch was particularly enjoyable. “Hail Bop” was a solid introduction to their sound, while “Default” leaned even further into the weirdness. “Firewater” was my first real standout, earning a 7.5/10. I also really enjoyed “Waveforms,” “Zumm Zumm,” and “WOR.” Later in the album, “Storm” became another favorite, also scoring a 7.5. One thing I appreciated was the album's flow. Even though the songs share a similar experimental sound, the sequencing works well, and there are enough changes in rhythm and atmosphere to keep things interesting. I did reach a point where I wanted a change of pace, but “WOR” arrived at just the right time. The instrumental “Skies Over Cairo” was another interesting detour with its Egyptian-sounding melodies. There isn't a bad song here. Every track earned at least a 6/10, which is impressive considering how unusual some of this music is. My individual ratings averaged 6.54, but I think the album deserves a bump for its cohesion and overall listening experience. It's also the kind of music I could easily see fitting into my regular psychedelic and jam-band rotation. This wasn't an album filled with songs I'd rate 9s or 10s, but it introduced me to a band with a sound I genuinely enjoy. I'm definitely interested in exploring more of their catalog, especially with a new album on the way. **7/10 — 4 stars.**
Solid album enjoyed it, but will probably not listen to again
The album is full of clever and sometimes whimsical songs.
Went in completely blind and I didn’t hate it. Got a little repetitive and annoying in the middle there and I was definitely ready for it to be over by the end but it didn’t make me viscerally angry, which is good for a newish electronic Brit Pop album on this list.
Good
Another pleasant surprise! It’s hard to describe their style of music, but it’s outgoing and creative as well as catchy. Very much different than 99% of the music on the list, and this time it’s a big plus. Favourites: Hail Bop, Default
I was so ready to hate it thinking it was another hipster nonsense but it's actually very fun album
Didn’t get it, probably because I didn’t go to art college or something.
It’s fine. Not great. Not bad.
Honestly this is such a millennial vibe that even as a Gen Z I enjoy it
A few years off the boil, the landfill indie take on freak folk’s turn towards beats. Basically sounds like a producer’s demo reel. Absent connections I doubt they would’ve been festival afternoon set mainstays but that’s how that goes a lot of the time.
🙄
It reminded me of 60s folk rock. Enjoyed it.
Very cool blending of styles. Default was probably my favorite because the sampling scratches an itch for me. I like the vocal harmonies and how they keep a 60s psych sound over varying instruments Cool album! Will come back to this
Very fun album, cool surfy guitar sound and bumping drums throughout. Songwriting left some to be desired but that clearly was not the focus here Highlights: "Waveforms", "Storm", "Silver Rays"
Very interesting. I appreciate the western-ish style to the music, and I kinda feel like this could be a soundtrack to a movie. It doesn't really all come together for me, though, as some tracks do blur together and I don't find it to be the most memorable album.
# Album Name: Django Django # Artist: Django Django # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Another album where i question why it should be on such a list, like many on here tbh, but its a good listen. # Top Tunes: Hail bop / Default / Firewater / Loves dart / Wor # Would I listen to it again? Yes
Els he trobat molt bons
"Skies Over Cairo" made me feel like a cool snake charmer 🐍 "Silver Rays" is the best song and "Zumm Zumm" is okay 👍 Thx
This was a pretty interesting album! Inclined how they made it seem like the django movies felt like that anyway!
Didn't really understand the hype when the album was first released. Thought they were alright live back then. Listening now, still sounds like some ponzi art-school rock.
Never heard of them before. Enjoyed it. Sounded somewhat like Beck.
Had never heard these guys before, but I liked it. Good variety. Not quite a 5, but close!
fine background music; combination of several different styles
Now THAT’S what this websites for, albums i dont know at all blowing me away, i really enjoyed that. Even the weakest tracks here are still solid. Standouts are Hail Bop, Default, Hand Of Man, Wor and Skies Over Cairo.
I saw “electronic” and was like “oh, it’s gonna be one of those”. Nah this was damn good. Great production. Interesting songs. Would recommend.
Really nice stuff, if a little too kooky sometimes. I bought this on CD back in the day actually, and it was fun to revisit. Didn’t blow me away though, it’s just a nice lil indie rock record with some good vocal harmonies.
I thought I would skip this one but the intro and first song got me... MKAYYY solid 3
like animal collective but more electronic listen with decent headphones
This is a proper anomaly for me.I shouldn't like this, but strangely I do, and it's been on my shelves since release. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ ★★★★☆(7/10) Total reviewed : 464 Already owned : 101 Purchased : 25 To buy : 3 Nope : 335
Really cool. Songs not overwritten.
I did not enjoy this one at all; they just have a really boring sound that's bouncy in a way I did not like.
Ok I guess
This started out arty and strong and eventually went a little too far into 60s psych for me. Some interesting stuff on here though.
I found out about these guys when I was in Seattle listening to KEXP. Still sounds fresh a decade later.
I did rather like this slice of electronic alt-rock (yes) when it came out in 2012, and was disappointed that this was as good as it got for them. I'm pleased to note, though, that I still rather like this. Default is my favourite track, but Waveform isn't far behind. Honourable mentions for Hand of Man, Wor and Storm. Tied over whether to give this 3 stars or 4... ah heck with it, no-one's watching
6/10 - Surprisingly welcome, very 70ish sound but with modern production and instruments
from the beginning i thought it was different and i wasn’t sure i liked it but i did enjoy the introduction into hail bop. another thing i liked was the electronic sound in the voice of the song default. other than that this album wasn’t for me the build up of the songs were okayish but when the vocals came in it got boring, i didn’t like the voice and the lyrics weren’t intriguing to me, it has no feeling to it. i respect the experimentation but no.
I have quite a few Django Django tracks on my playlist, so I clearly like the sound. I think their albums are a different things though. The music is genuinely interesting, but the lyrics and the repetition isn’t. Listening to an album makes you realise that though the music is different the lyrics and style of delivery is completely uniform and manic inducing.
I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected when I saw the band was a bunch of white dudes named after something African. Unfortunate name aside, this was a chill vibe that wasn’t boring.
A bunch of Edinburgh College of Art alumni writing what seems to be an album about the American Southwest would appear to be about like me trying to write an Irvine Welsh novel. And yet something about it is effective: beyond the Wilsonian harmonies and surf vistas there's a sense of sonic desolation that, for me at least, conveys visions of I-40 across New Mexico. The production on this is slick without losing definition, and most everything here is at least hummable. My personal favorite is "Firewater," which could be a lost *Too High to Die*-era Meat Puppets tune.
Just not my cup of tea in the slightedt
solid album
Its a pleasing sound but didnt catch me. Respect for the art though.
Not for me. Very odd. There are a few tracks that have potential, but nothing really sticks. Interesting use of electronic sounds, but too much of a "vibe" for me.
It’s unique, not unpleasant to listen to, but not for me. Not sure who exactly it’s for, but not me.
perfectly average electronic album
I liked the movie better
Enjoyed somewhat for the most part
I thought this was kind of a run of the mill, not very good album. But then it kept going and I got very very bored.
Psychedelic pop, I liked it a lot more than I thought I would!
4.0
Started strong and i got really excited. First few tracks I've added to rotation. After that it fell off pretty sharply.
I remember liking this album at one time but agree with Sean, strong start with a big drop off. Default is the only song that really stands out. Wor was decent too.
Oh man, from the start I felt this might be it, another 5 star banger. Musically I think the album was very interesting, but when the singing started and it was just very flat, I felt this can not be it. I still enjoyed the album a lot and in some songs the singing was actually nice.
Interesting one! Definitely on the psychedelic side while also being more of an electronica album than anything else. Not the strongest on the songwriting front, and still a bit repetitive for my taste, but it made pretty enjoyable background music. Low 4.
Super fresh album, every song brought something new an it's tragic to see this has been removed from the latest edition. The album art reflects the music perfectly, something strange but pretty in an unexpected place.
So good to see this on here. One of my favourite albums post-2000. Default is an all time classic. Loads of variety on here, a very original piece of work.
This was fine to listen through, although nothing was really memorable. 3*
Foi um som bem diferente do comum, mas repetitivo. Mas pelo menos tentaram ser únicos, vai merecer um 3, enquanto outros genéricos que eu dei 3 poderiam passar pra 2.
First things first, seeing the words Django Django by Django Django is a funny visual. Only thing that would be funnier is if they also had a song called “Django Django”. Missed opportunity really, but I digress. Hey, for a band that I’ve literally never even heard of, even in passing, this was a pretty great album, I won’t even lie. The website lists it as Rock, but I would argue it’s actually secretly an Electronica album with Rock songs thrown in. I mean come on, the intro, “Introduction”, and the repetitive but still goated song “Default” are clearly more Electronica than Rock. But the songs where the singing is more heavily focused like “Hail Bop” are still pretty good as well. Not the best things in the world, the lead has a very passable “2010’s - 2020’s” voice, but still good enough to warrant me saying I enjoy them as a whole. Where I want to fault this album is on the amount of filler. All the songs I’ve mentioned so far in this review, sans “Life’s A Beach”, are my favorite songs on the album. But they’re all at the very beginning of a 48 minute album that by the third song, you kind of get the point. After that, the album quickly loses any interest it warranted, and fades into the background. I get that fading into the background isn’t always a bad thing, I’ve said so about many of these albums, but for one claiming it’s pure Rock, you’d hope the album would draw your attention more, or have even one memorable thing on it. I suppose “Default” is the catchiest song here, but I don’t really want to listen to it on repeat again after today, it would get old very fast. I’m not going to pick the intro as my favorite either. That just feels like cheating for some reason, even though it shouldn’t. Man, surprisingly I can not decide what my favorite song on this album is today, and that’s a pretty good song to have. None of them are going in my day to day playlist, but I still had a great time with this album today. For the bands I’ve never heard of, I genuinely never know what to expect, and love going in blind without reading the reviews on the first listen through. That way the album has a chance to really jump out, take hold and surprise me. This album to its credit managed to do that, but I’m still giving it a 3, as I just don’t think it’s going to stick with me after today. If I had to pick, I guess my favorite song would have to be “Default”. Being the most memorable song on the album really is the biggest perk at the end of the day when I have 1089 in total to get through. Unless a song stands out for being unmitigated trash garbage, it has a good chance of being my favorite song on the album. Luckily this time was for good reason. And speaking of 1089 albums, today marks album 399. Tomorrow I’m getting 400!! Hoping it’s a good one, as always. Until then, this album was alright. Giving it a 3/5.
Number: 276 Familiarity: None (1) Rating: 3 Before: ======= I think I've heard the name but Art Rock, Synth-Pop is not what I was expecting. I was thinking something more along the lines of hip-hop. During: ======= Midway in the 2nd song: Um... why is this on The List? After : ======= OK, it got better, approaching 4 territory overall but not quite. I think one thing that holds it back from 4 is it's a little repetitive, I would prefer a little more variety. Favorite track was Zumm Zumm which I added to my 2012 list.
I felt that this album was striving to be experimental just for the sake of it, which harmed the overall sound. To me, it came off quite immature and unpolished, lacking any atmospheric, unique or impressive quality. Although it flowed together nicely and had nice vocal arrangements, the only way I can describe this is sort of "juvenile" in parts (Eg. 'Zumm zumm')? It felt like something someone who likes playing retro video games might find cool, so yeah, maybe not quite for me.
Interesting: I've never heard of them. They reminded me at times of Jars of Clay, and at other times of Guster... but I like both of those bands better. These guys languished in the second half of their album as their unique quirkiness gave way to repetition, but I still liked it well enough because it was new.
Different. Alt electronica? Melodic, rhythmic, repetitive, and fun. Love’s Dart is top track followed by Life’s A Beach, but all songs are good. (3.475*s) Liked ‘em enough to check out their most recent release Year Of The Snake from last week, 10/14/26. Well worth your 14 minutes if ya liked their 2012 debut.
Django Django is a cool band that hit the alt-rock charts with a few songs around the same time people were getting into some of the stranger acts like Alt-J and Tame Impala. The debut release by these guys is quite good. I really got into the psych-rock sound they have. Their style is unchained and trippy. Not a bad track on the record. Cover art has same weird vibe. Def gonna check out the rest of their catalog. 3.85 stars...looking forward to diving into some more Double Ds.
Another nice surprise from 1001. Django Django was a very solid indie arthouse album. It's got some modern rock musings but feels different from all the popular mainstream acts. They finely weave in some electronic programming between off kilter beats and fun catchy lyrics. The vocals have an electronic layering/backing effect or something that makes it feel like another independent instrument as opposed to just a vocal track. All in a very nice package that kept me hooked pretty much from start to finish. Django Django reminds me of a couple other indie acts that I enjoy like Hot Chip and of Montreal. Seems like a band that I should check out more of their stuff which I'll plan to do at some point. 3.79 stars
Fun indie pop, dig it
It was fine, had a good rhythm
W album cover
Very cool album. I really liked this and thought it was a fun listen that I would definitely come back to. Songwriting didn't blow me away, but the production and overall vibe are really cool. Top Songs: Default, Zumm Zumm, Skies Over Cairo
2/5
I really liked this. I listened to it once and thought it was a solid four stars. I listened to it again and I think I am going to have to bump it up to a full five. This is definitely an album I would seek out and put on again.
This was an interesting one for sure. The production on here was incredible, and the music very rich. It was a joy to listen to on a solid pair of headphones. That said, the songs really lacked a major hook for me, and there weren't any real standouts. Still interested enough that I may try and listen to more from their catalogue.
Django Django, the band so good that they named them twice. Four times really, counting the name of this self-titled debut album. I heard the glitchy intro/chorus of “Default” when it was released back in 2012 and I was immediately sold. Django Django have a really great knack of balancing a blend of indie rock with electronic noise, a sound that fits in with my music profile very nicely. They do have quite a unique sound too. One I can't quite define or articulate, but it's very much theirs. You hear one of their songs and you instantly know it's them. The first four tracks of the album are absolutely stellar. The slow build up of the electronic synth-heavy “Introduction” track going straight into “Hail Bop” is so damn class. They have a great sense of how to build and maintain energy in their music. “Hail Bop” is a fantastic song. Electric guitars play a brilliantly catchy melody, struggling to constrain oscillating effects from taking off, over a bed of electronic textures, while lush vocal harmonies soak the rest of the space available. And then it's straight into the iconic “Default”. The glitchiness of the stuttering chorus vocals is broken up by the rawness of the guitars. What a tune. “Firestarter” is another amazing song. They bring a real bluesy sound to their music with those fantastic acoustic guitar fills. And everything marches forward with a driving clap beat. I'd forgotten how great that combo of acoustic guitar, lead and vocal harmonies is, mixed together with a healthy dose of reverb and echo. That's a particularly fantastic four song run to start off with, but it doesn't end there. Almost every song on the album is up there with the first four in terms of quality. “Storm” is the other one I'll specifically call out though. For all the reasons I've already mentioned as to why those first four songs work, “Storm” absolutely kicks. It's a winning formula, and even though it's applied to every song on the album, somehow it doesn't grow tired. Each of these songs are unique and distinct from each other. Ultimately, it just comes down to fantastic songwriting. 4.5 stars for pure enjoyment from start to finish.
Totally service, prog/experimental pop/indie. It's got a sheen of being new and interesting but if you really listen it feels like it's taken the best bits of more bold bands, battles, beta band, LCD soundsystem eand watered them all down into something less divisive. Seems a little like it's trying to much without having a genuine soul.
Have all the good band names already been taken, forcing new bands to come up with silly names like Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Viagra Boys or Django Django? Had Django Django’s self-titled debut not been suggested to me as part of the 1001 Albums Challenge, I wouldn’t have touched this album with a barge pole because the band name is so silly. I would indeed have missed out on something. Instead of the expected Mexican spaghetti western hip-hop mariachi band, Django Django play a compelling mix of art rock, neo-psychedelia, and experimental electronic pop. It's as if Pink Floyd had recorded an album of Talking Heads covers with the Beach Boys, produced by Godley & Creme. Amazing! I was already starting to feel like a grumbling boomer who rejects all new music and repeats 'Everything was better in the old days' like a mantra and would rather celebrate the umpteenth re-release by old heroes, who are just out to rake in the cash, than give new bands a chance. Et voilà: Django Django play a wonderfully relaxed, modern take on art rock, subtly nodding to their genre's roots without blandly copying the past. I’ve already dived into the rest of the band’s discography, and they seem to have perfected and developed their sound further. This debut, however, is a very strong start. Highly recommended!
Loved the acoustic guitar, making a weird combo with the electronic sounds. Quite interesting without being great. 6/10
I have not heard of Django Django the band. I have not heard any of their music. Synthesizer is the dominant instrument along with drum machines. The vocals are okay. The music sounds a bit like prog rock of the 70s. The music is sparse in the songs. It sounds a bit like elevator music, inoffensive. I liked the more upbeat songs like Wor and Default. This is an average album. Three stars.
Great arrangements using complex precision and electronic effects. Appealing youthful vocals.
Actually listened to this album a few times, which says enough. Nice find! Quirky music, quite dense, nice vocal harmonies and decent compositions. The guys could use a singing lesson here and there but then again it adds to the indie experience.
Wow.
pleasant but it kind of bounced off me, to be honest. we have gomez and the beta band at home. 3/5
432/1089 LOVE this album cover yesss i’m intrigued and the introduction is promising a lot really liked this album, it’s exactly the sort of thing i wanted to find on this project. it has a good chill indie pop vibe that i enjoy and i’ll def be returning to it faves: waveforms, default, wor, skies over cairo 84/100
(4/7) hail bop indeed
Default is stand out, good album, not great
Vidám album, nagyon tetszik.
Maybe the best offering of this type of electronic music I’ve generated so far. Reminded me of Beck.
fun
Reminded me a bit of that Bees album I listened to, but not in the way I wanted. This album is just very eccentric and I might need more listens to get a full reading
Fine. Some nice production, and the combination of C&W guitars with 2000s indie gives it an interesting edge, but beyond Default and Hale Bop, none of the songs are particularly grabbing. Inoffensive and different enough to deserve a spot, but i've no desire to come back to it. 3, straight down the middle.
Nice blend of guitars and electronic rhythms. A bit quirky but good fun.
Never heard of this band before or anything that sounds like this, I actually enjoyed it and didn't skip any songs
Another one added to the pile of 'It's fine, isn't it, but no idea what it's doing on this list'.
Jazzy/funky/worldy jams hell yes
another one i'd never heard of, and wow is it insanely good. it's electronic and folky/psychedelic. just some wondrous music overall
Some decent, mildly psychedelic indie pop stuff, but quite samey.
