Love this album. Diving into more of their stuff. Will share with everyone
This is what 1001 is all about. Never heard of the. Never would have listened to them. But its a right cracking album.
Much better than I remembered, it's definitely a solid album
I really enjoyed this. Sometimes a great artist passes you by the first time around. It takes a project like this for there to be a second time.
First time listening to this album, and I think it's the first time I've actually heard of this band.. I could listen to this forever
Bit of a trippy album, but that doesn't mean it's a bad one. 4.5 bumped up to 5.
This was great, new discovery for me, would like to hear again.
First album. Amazing. I had actually listened once before and had Default on repeat for a while, but I was not prepared for a more intentional listen with good headphones.
First time listen. It is rare for a new album to have such an immediate impact on me as this one. Not sure how I missed this, but I'm so happy to finally be at the party. It's layered, fun, catchy, multi-sound, and exciting. This album is an absolute masterpiece.
Didn’t know the band. Never heard them play. One listen and it gets 5 stars. I loved it.
I really enjoyed this. Sounded like the Beach Boys in the best way. Tried to listen to this while getting things done at work but it kept pulling me in. Well done. 5/5
like ELP mixed with some untz and less proggy beats.
Loved Django Django at green man a few years back
Fantastic
ok
37/1001. I started this project to encounter interesting artists like these, which I have missed for once reason or another. Back in 2012 I was probably to busy looking for cool cumbia, scouting through brazil bossa and beats, had a trip or two across african music plateaus, while re-re-visiting electronic 80s obscurities. So, I guess I missed quite a lot what was happening in the indie-/alternative-/ art music scene. Super duper nice that these kinds of things pop up here on this list as well: sonic exploration, adventures in digital production, retroesque harmony arrangements á la beach boys / Brian Wilson, stereolabish synth grooves, FourTet / Animal Collective sound collages, Tame Impala indie attitude... fun and interesting, I don't mind that song writing is rather simple or that perhaps too many hours have been spent on a computer to create these pieces. I want more!
wow this one is a sonic delight. interesting electronic ish musical sound, with a hypnotic lyrics in a really gentle listening tone. really easy to listen to and just vibe
I was surprised this popped up on my list! I used to listen to Default on repeat when it first came out. I enjoyed the album and added a few more songs to my favorites list.
Solid music. Tight. Needs a relisten or 10
Heard of but never listened to them before. This was awesome, first 5 star from a new to me group.
This was completely new to me but a really really enjoyed it.
What a treat. I'd never heard of these guys ans really didn't know what to expect, but I'll return to this album for sure. Interesting sound, a bit funky, lots of variety. Loved it.
Actually a 4.5 but I really loved this album. Kinda sounds like if the Beach Boys took even more drugs. Seriously, cool, futuristic vibes. Niche instrument work. Haunting melodies. Cool Stuff
What a genius mix of Moody Blues, funk and 90s folk/rock. It just warmed my soul listening to it. Gotta go for it again. 4.5/5
Yep.
Default
Unlike anything else I’ve heard so far. Uniquely intriguing. Was hooked from the introduction. Big fan of the funky instrumentals and dissonant harmonies. Such a groovy, jungle-like vibe. Also has a nostalgic, dreamy feel that reminds me of summer.
Awesome album! Really fun overall and felt incredibly unique! Great instrumentals and fitting vocal work. 'Default' slaps heavy, easy fave pick.
This is cool, super imaginative, and original
This one was a surprise for me. I really was into it. Good energy. Added to my library
Brutal
Surprised by this one. Solid album throughout. Repetitive beats that get built on but nothing too abrasive. Easy to listen to.
Really really liked this. Will definitely check more out from them.
Wow! One of the real surprises! This is adjacent to the 3 EP’s by the Beta Band, but with nicer harmonies. Bonus there’s a dub version by Mad Professor that is stellar.
What a surprise! Love it when a complete unknown blows me away. Reminded me of Goose in a positive way
This was always one of those meant to listen to buy never got round to it albums for me. So I guess I'm finally getting round to it and it's wonderful, a modern classic in only pissed i waited so long to listen to it.
9.5/10. I have no idea what just happened, but I loved every minute of it!!! :)
4.5
Excellent!
I had never listened to the whole album but recognised a few songs. I love the 70s vibe, even though it’s a contemporary album. Great tunes and harmonies.
Hey look, it’s the album that started this whole thing for me! There is (or was) a user on Reddit going through the list manually, posting his reviews of every album in a subreddit he made for himself. He would cross-post his reviews to the bands’ subreddits, which is how I came to learn about the book. Django Django is my favourite band and I was surprised to hear they made it to a list of must-hear albums, since they aren’t well-known. A couple years prior, I had made my own list of famous albums I’d never listened to, so the idea of a list of 1001 albums was tempting, but daunting. Well here I am, 780-something albums later. I thought it would have been perfect if this was the final album I got generated, but I’ll take any opportunity to listen to this. It’s one of my all-time favourites.
This is one of my go-to albums for a mood lift. Love it. DD are also one of many bands I love whose name is a repeated word. So there we are
I have seen this name a bunch but never really dove in. A few songs in and I'm super bummed I didn't because I am boppin to this. Getting some solid Animal Collective vibes from this. This had the perfect amount of strangeness to it while still being super melodic and groovy. Big fan. Unfortunately it seems like this is by far their best album but I will absolutely be back.
I really like the style of the music and I'll check out more of their songs for sure. I liked Hail Bop, Default and Life's a Beach especially.
Very enjoyable! This record has a great feel and sound. It's going into the rotation.
This did come as a surprise! I didn’t know the band but was blown away by their music! Awesome
I'm actually floored that this is going down as a 5 for me. Open-mindedness is a superpower, kids. Favorite track: Waveforms
Indie pop, neo-psychedelia. What an oddball of an album. Don't think I've personally ever heard anything quite like it, and it was quite a breath of fresh air compared to some the albums I've been getting recently. Super poppy electronica with a psychedelic twist, this album was full of catchy songs. Great vocal harmonies, all I strunents were really strong as well although the real standout for me was the synth. The lyrics were all pretty goofy and nonsensical but that really added to the silly fun vibes. The only real thing holding it back for me was the length, I think it overstays its welcome by just a hair. Overall a great fun album that I've already recommended to friends. Will revisit, it's just too fun. 4.5/5
cool
Absolutely perfect
Some of the vocal effects remind me of the Kids Learning Tube videos about our solar system’s planets. And of my more favored video about the dwarf planets. Great videos for kids and adults alike. https://youtu.be/4tw_RiQp6H8?si=h5t-Rdr4lsrFXdJ9 I learned that term dwarf planet was solidified after astronomists discovered Eris. That led to a Wikipedia investigation: Eris, which is bigger than Pluto (pouring one out for you my long lost planet buddy), was found in 2005. I also learned that the 9 planet crowd are just sentimentalists. In the 1800s, there were 20+ objects considered planets before “asteroid” was a thing. Rabbit hole over. Django Django is a refreshing blend of electronica, rock, and art. This is a stand out album.
Good stuff
10/10 absolutely adore everything about this
I loved this! The harmonies, the percussion, the cool vibe. Good stuff!
This album had a nice feel to it. The first listen was good, but the second listen while I was outside doing some yard work really hit.
There've been a lot of times when listening to the album of the day felt like work. This was NOT one of those days. I experienced actual pleasure doing today's assignment. This was fresh and fun. Loved it.
Catchy as hell! A futuristic surf-rock sound that is very unique and great to listen to. Nice!
I liked this a lot. Another band I've heard the name of but didn't listen to. A surprising discovery and need to explore the rest of their discography.
Cool, interesting electronica. Some amazing harmonies and progressions.
This is lovely. Melodic & mesmerizing.
fucks at the i-want-the-vinyl level.
This is the best "new" music I've heard in a very long time. This album slaps front to back. There's so many influences and yet it all feels cohesive. Not a bad track on the album. Reminds me of the Beach Boys, Talking Heads, Devo and Tame Impala all blended into one... Standout tracks: Default, Waveforms, Love's Dart, Wor, Life's a Beach
This is so weird ... but I love how unique it is
Very very good
I need to look up art rock now! I had heard Life’s A Beach and glad I found it again here. Great album listened to it twice in a row. Light bouncy off beat fun percussion. Love it
Loved this. Have already listened again.
Love love love This is one of coolest albums i know. Love Django Django sound, it's unique, it's fun and it makes u want to move to the beat!
if this album was a coat it would be arsene wengers height crossed with ian wrights depth. basically a massive arse coat.
I absolutely love this. And I'm loving my first listen through on this band. Idiosyncratic and full of energy. This is an immediate add to my library.
This is what I'm here for. I've never heard of these guys before and I'm so glad that I've now discovered them. I'm not sure how to describe this album. It's as if the band got a big bowl and started pouring genres into it. New wave, country, indie, psychedelia and so on until the bowl was full. They then swirled everything together. The end result shouldn't work, yet bizarrely it does.
This one is awesome! Probably my favorite one so far. I loved Hail Bop, Zumm Zumm, and Hand of Man
I liked this very much so and saved it. Apple Music explanation is great
When I saw this ablum come up I was curious and thought, I think I've heard of these guys. My listening history shows that I've listened to them pretty much every year since 2013. As soon as Default kicked in it all came flooding back. This album is right up my alley and I look forward to giving it another spin. Fave tracks from today: Default, Zumm Zumm, Wor
Huh - I apparently listened to this once in 2014, but must have been in a mood as I never went back for more. Weird, because this is a sound I love! Presses the same buttons as Beta Band, The Bees, and Animal Collective. Will definitely be giving this more plays, as well as hitting up their other albums. Fave track - "Hail Bop" has that John Carpenter goodness, but there are bunch of other contenders here that have the potential to become beloved - "Zumm Zumm", "Love's Dart", "Life's a Beach" - probably a bunch of the others, too!
OBJ. 5.
Love synths, love steady paced dance music. This just has a fantastic and consistent energy that I love.
Wow, love the styles blended together. I’m going to visit their entire catalog. Great album.
Feels like a modern rendition of the classic Beta Band (The Three EPs). This album mashes indie pop and psychedelia with aspects of electro- even dance. Feels like you’re in the front seat of a western movie with cameos of UFOs and aliens. Overall fantastic record. Firewater is the best song. Fav: Hail Bop, Default, Firewater, Wor
If you listen to it ten times in a row and you just keep liking it more every time, it's the right album. I don't know why, it's very original, and it's for me
Some cool sounds, really enjoyed this. The vocals in particular were richly melodic like some of the best sixties bands. Will definitely listen again
I am really enjoying this funky, bleepy alt-pop.
Another incredible early '10s throwback that brings a thousand memories of driving around in the Ashcroft Butchers ute pumping Triple J and listening to the likes of Zan Rowe and Lewi Mckirdy back announcing a heap of tracks of this album. Both Lewi and Zan were so so important in the development of my musical taste and proclivities, especially Mad Dog McKirdy
Such a cool, unique sound! So amped to find a cool new artist to listen to!
Oh hell yeah what a cool discovery.
Love love love love - so good
Wow! How have I never heard these guys before?! This is going in rotation, stat! So many good sounds: driving rhythms, sound fx, textured vocals…
love it
Completely unfamiliar with this band. They've got a great sound, mixing vintage electronica reminiscent of Jean-Jacques Perrey with a more indie pop-rock sound. Because of that unique combination, it stands out against many of the more nondescript indie albums of the decade. It's far more interesting than most of them, and I'll definitely come back to this.
I live the introduction! Hail bop.is good, but Default is a banger! Firewater is good, too. While the album remains good after that, it does drop off a bit and not much variety. Incorporating air raid sirens into Wor.is definitely interesting. Skies over Cairo is brilliant, too.
Brutal, me encanta este paisaje. Dejé likes y promesa de reescuchar. (Encima me falta escuchar 2 temas todavia) Nota: 4.1
Okay, this was an intriguing find. For those who don't know, Django Django are an art rock band formed by four gents who met at Edinburgh College of Art. Sure, drummer and producer David Maclean had some artistic connections, but for the most part, these dudes got together and formed a band at college, not expecting the overnight success they got with their self-titled debut. It's humbling to read about such a simple beginning for a band, and it certainly helped that the album they first put out is pretty solid. Their debut is pretty hypnotic, with the band's mix of neo-psychedelia and surf rock. The well-accented percussion from Maclean, the twisting keyboards and sampling from Tommy Grace, the low-end bass from Jimmy Dixon, and Vincent Neff's warm guitar licks made for such an impeccable sound, aided by Vincent's effortless vocal delivery and the backing harmonies. Maclean's production is top-notch, making these compositions feel as expansive as the desert they invoke in their imagery. The vibes are immaculate from an instrumental standpoint. As for the lyrics, they do seem undercooked in places. I will commend the band for trying to cover a wide range of topics, including the euphoria of trying to see a comet on "Hail Bop", the night out drinking gone wrong in "Firewater", the sensations and nostalgia invoked from music in "Waveforms", the aching desperation in finding a woman on "Love's Dart", the strife to defy a fated end on "Life's a Beach", and the castaway's futile attempt at escape from the island on "Silver Rays". But now and then, I find the lyrics to be sparing in detail, as with the generalized notions of imagination and conflict on "Hand of Man" and "WOR" respectively, or noticeably repetitive as with the vocal loop on "Zumm Zumm". Either these songs needed additional work, or perhaps they could've gotten away with more pure instrumental compositions; it certainly worked for "Skies Over Clairo" with that commanding percussive beat and Egyptian-esque keyboard motif. Then again, I don't think the guys in Django Django were expecting such an overnight success from their debut album. Maclean himself thought it would be just another underground release that sold a few copies. Even if it's not perfect, I do think Django Django put out a promising debut. It's certainly got me interested in hearing more from them.
I'd never heard of this before but I really dig it! And I hadn't looked at the album date at first....thought it was a lot older. Cool stuff.
Wacky. Like the weather in Maine, if you don't like it, wait a minute. I put Love's Dart on my kitchen playlist, and Default has a cool video.
fun. was anderes. art-rock. cool. 4/5
It took a second listen, but Default is just so catchy that I was rather won over.
Still prefer Devotchka’s spaghetti westerns but the rest of this was interesting. Kind of surprised me, too.
Great layering and production, 2010s indie done well.
VERY good reminded me of talking heads actually
Very Beta Band. Pretty repetitive, but I like what's repeated.
A very nostalgic album for me. Used to listen to back in the day. Reminds me of Cabinteely Park and all that. Holds up better than I imagined
This was very good!
Really sweet and fun
Im not familiar with them, but after listening to them, this may be my favorite discovery from this project do far. I love that their vocals remind me of the Moody harmonies of Heywood, Lodge, and Pender. But what really grabbed me most is the innovative cross between electronic music and Rock music. It reminds me of some of the more forward Thinking Bowie or Gabriel in spirit... I'm starting this off at a mid to light 4½★s, but I really think that this will probably be a grower I actually want to look more into this group. (4.35) ★★★★½
Like a modern indie Beach Boys, no songs stood out to me but enjoyable as a whole
I don't think I have ever heard of Django Django. Maybe something will sound familiar as I go through this. I have zero expectations so curious what this is like. Thoughts after listening 3 times... First 2 songs were pretty cool. "Default" sounded familiar, but I don't know why. A bunch of this kind of reminds me of The Beta Band which I first heard through this website, and I liked that one (3 stars). Also hear inspiration from 60s psychedelic pop/rock like Beatles, Beach Boys, and even The Kinks. I ended up liking 11 of the songs - everything except "Firewater" and "Zumm Zumm". This was a great surprise! Liked songs on Spotify: 11/13 Rating: 4/5
So nearly top marks for this album. The energy of it is fantastic, built by brilliant songwriting, atmospheric vocals and electronic grooves that keep you hooked from start to finish. Each track just has such a great imagination to it, with indie guitars mixed with synths, reverb and upbeat rhythms that get the foot tapping without you even realising. The entire listen is so fun as a result.
Some great ideas on this. I say ideas, because the delivery of said ideas can be a bit lacking, but it's still worth grooving along to.
Enjoyed this one, had a modern whimsical feel and unique to what I’ve heard so far on this list. The vocals do seem like another instrument which means that they blend perfectly into the tracks but then it also means they don’t have an emotional punch, which I felt was lacking after the first few tracks. Overall good sound but lacking that lasting impact of a 5.
Saw someone call this "The Beta Band for the 2010s" and you know what, that is more accurate than I think most people are going to give credit for. I'm also going to take the time to call out how insane it is that the Beta Band have an album on this list, and it isn't The Three EPs (I know it's a compilation. I don't care. You want to talk experimental and essential?).
I really liked this! It was experimental but at the same time it knew who it was and did it well.
was dreading this one a little but surprisingly good; fun and inventive
A cool modern take on surf rock.
Definitely not what I was expecting by the name. This sounds so 80s for something from 2012.
This is awesome. I've heard these guys' name before but never the music. Nice find by the list. ALMOST makes up for the plethora of Elvis Costello albums....almost.
This is awesome already!! The introduction leading directly into hail bop! It’s the music that really is standing out for me. The vocals are alright and don’t take away from it, but the music itself is the highlight. Default had such a cool sound to it and was unexpected. Firewater is the first one of which I found that the vocals were the main focus. I thought it ended up being pretty great. Waveforms had awesome vocal effects to it. Zumm Zumm was aptly named. Loves Dart was awesome! Wor was also a ton of fun. I unfortunately don’t have anything specific for the rest of the album as I was completing work whmis training for the 5th time and was only half paying attention. Genuinely did enjoy this album though!! I think it’s solid, fun, and different. 4/5 ⭐️ 124/1089
Extremely well produced, this albums sounds fantastic. I love that this band leans so hard into their particular spaghetti western/space opera aesthetic, even if it is somewhat silly in places. Like so many albums on here, with a bit of judicious editing this would be a classic.
There was a brief period in 2012 when I checked out new music on MTV (after not having done so in years) and Default was one of the songs from that time that I still listen to sometimes. I should have bought the album, it sounds like! Groovy rhythms! I usually hate vocal chopping, but here it's like an art form. There's also not a lot of it, so no chance to get tiring.
This is a pretty good album for not really listening to this genre. I really enjoyed it and the best songs were Wor and Default
3.75
Never listened to this before - I was pleasantly surprised. Most of the tracks are quite enjoyable and a couple are foot-tappers.
8/10
Mellow but with a good driving beat, enjoyable instrumentals
This has got to be far and away my most enjoyed record that was new to me of the whole project so far...though I realized I knew the song "Default," just didn't know the artist, but can't remember where from!
Experimental, added some songs to my playlist
I have not heard this before, but I’ve heard a number of these songs come up on mixes. This was pleasantly surprising, I was paying attention to the indie scene in the ‘10s but mostly noise and doom and other weird psych but missed out on a lot of indie electronic stuff like this. I’m digging the keyboard tones and the psychedelic elements, they really elevate the good pop songs underneath. It’s nice to hear a new recent album that I like!
Really enjoyed this one!
They could have dropped a few songs in the middle of the album, but I really liked most of it.
Default is on my running playlist but I haven’t been running for a couple of weeks, so listening to that while sitting down made me feel oddly guilty. Other than that, I enjoyed this - it’s such an interesting-sounding album.
Definite hints of the Beta Band in their which isn’t a bad thing
I really enjoyed this! Good album!
I’m quite fond of albums that have instrumental songs that feature little to no words. The introduction song is so cool. Sounds like something directly out of a video game; the type of music you hear when you're traversing a mountain level. This album is weird and funky and I like it. Favourite song(s): introduction and love’s dart Overall rating: 4.2
Great new album
at first i was like wtf is this but its pretty good fav song: Zumm Zumm
Different but enjoyed it really liked “storm” not my usual listen but the more I listen the more I like this one
Kind of Beta Band-ish. In other words: my kind of bullshit.
Very pleasantly surprised by this! My only complaint is some of the songs sounded too much alike.
I was unfamiliar and excited to listen. Turned out I liked it WAY more than I thought I would.
I was vibing on this for sure. Easy listening.
The band's name sounds familiar. I think I came across them at some point in my daily music stream. I really liked them back then. I feel the same way about this album. I quite liked it. I don't know if I'll listen to it every day, but I'll definitely enjoy it every now and then. 4/5
Really cool. (a lot on my mind so maybe difficult to review.) Dancey and exciting. Cool sounds in general. Not crazy about the calm Scottish voices.
+1 just because Fifa tune
I'm into this. Would own the album. It's fun and funky.
Non stop grooves - very hypnotizing!
Nice vibes and intresting melodic music.Sometimes a bit wierd so more lika a 3.7.
Absolutely brilliant, never listened to their work before and clearly I’ve been missing out
Had a good time with this album
Tight harmonics, catchy beats, and inventive sounds. This album is so much fun to listen to.
I enjoyed this a lot and cannot express why. Just good to be doing anything whilst listening to it.
Catchy genius synths. What a fun record. Would need a touch more variation to hit a 5
Hard to pin down their influences. A mixed bag that mostly works and makes for an interesting listen.
Good layered songs
I don't know what I was expecting from an album with such a title but it certainly wasn't country-folk psychedelia that was incredibly catchy and attention-grabbing. Hail Bop is an instant mood setter as the album's opener with tangy guitars, then there's Firewater which has an inexplicable X-factor that makes it work. I am about 10 years too late but this was genuinely an album that has no skips for me. Will use this album on future road trips.
Fun listen. Caleidoscopic, but at times a bit pointless.
Really pretty good. Probably a 3.5 for me. I’d like to make it 4 stars, but I don’t know if it has the replayability that I’d want it to have to hit those heights. I tend to overrate electronic music a bit to compensate for the boomers that overwhelmingly partake in this project and don’t want to listen to anything but Fleetwood Mac and The Beatles. I think I’ll go 4 stars here. It’s a bit of a reach, but the album is pretty unique, and a quite pleasant listen.
Refreshingly different
Neat little psychedelic melting pot of pop ,rock and other ecclectic musical influences. Kind of meanders in the middle, but songs like "Default" and "Silver Rays" are good earworm material. 7.5, maybe an 8/10.
Pretty good album for what it is, and what it is is some nice loops. Favourite track: Hail Bop
8/10 Good album for easy listening. I give it 4 Djangos out of 5.
Don’t know them and writing the word Django four times pushed me over the edge, but I really liked this – its innovative, well produced, catchy and fun. Not sure why they are called a rock band though, this seems more pop? Difficult to score, high 3 I think, four stars.
Interesting album. I liked how each song was different from the previous one. I’ll give it another listen.
Of the bands I never heard of on this list, this has been one of the best. Loved this.
This was a great surprise. I had vaguely heard of Django Django before but had never given them a listen. I love any music that takes chances on blending styles and influences, and this album certainly does that. There's a dreaminess that runs throughout the project, interwoven with jangly surf rock, dancy drum and bass beats, middle eastern melodies, and quiet indie ballads. It makes sense that one of the band members is related to someone in the Beta Band, you can definitely hear similarities, particularly in the vocals. This was a fun listen for me, and I'll give it a 4.5/5
Solid album overall. It started out really good, but I kinda got bored with it as it went on. A good break from the classics and traditional stuff, though, this one.
I really liked this a lot. Sounded like a missing Beta band album
Not bad at all!
I thought this was a fun, eccentric, and quirky indie pop and neo psychedelia album from the early 2010s. The music and instrumentation is playful and off kilter, blending analog electronic textures with the garage style roughness of indie rock.
Quite nice
Really cool
Really enjoyed it. Default's a bop and the girls enjoyed it also. Only bum note being Skies over Cairo which went beyond irony to just being shite. Will listen again.
This was really unexpectedly good. Will definitely listen again. In the same vein of Tame Impala, but with more arabic influence. Going to check out some of their other stuff.
I never heard of them. I liked the last two songs best. Enjoyable, but not notable.
This was completely new to me, hadn't ever heard of this band. Really really enjoyed it, maybe adjacent to Beta Band with a little more of a pop influence and some nice Fleet Foxes elements. A lot of good songs here. Recommended if you are a fan of late aughts/early 10s indie music
Psych-rock music is right up my alley, and Django Django gets it all right (for the most part). The whole album had a vibe to it that I enjoyed, and I found the more electronic-y aspects really interesting. "Hail Bop" was one of the highlights for me. That being said, it did feel somewhat bogged down at points, and overly repetitive at others (even for psych-rock.) Despite that, I still liked it a lot. Favorite Song: "Hail Bop"
Eye opener... like it lots. I went back and listened to The Monochrome Set, Beachboys, The 5,6,7,8s, and The Gorillas.
banger !
A new discovery, really enjoyed this
Jo men skapligt
Of the wall in a good way
Really interesting album, I really enjoyed the experience, even tho is not really my style I really liked some of the ideas they had for the production and for the instrumentation, some changes in harmony really caught my attention, I want to listen to some more of them.
Really feels unique for the time it came out, I was expecting to be hit with some indie rock trite, but it's a pleasant surprise! Love "Hail Bop" and "Zumm Zumm".
Album No. 0123 on my list. Cool album! I had merely heard of the name Django Django before, but had never listened to anything by the band before. But I liked the album! It’s groovy, it’s interesting, it’s very well produced and sounds very good. Very nice artsy indie electro rock stuff (I think that’s actually a very fair description). In my opinion, there could have been a little more dynamic within some of the songs - some things sound a little repetitive and could have used a little more proper songwriting. Great when you want to dance to those songs though. Will add “Hail Bop”, “Default”, and “Wor” to my playlist. 4/5 stars!
SO FUNN! This album got me feeling like I own a 70s Volkswagen RV
I didn't like this the first listen through. On a superficial level, it's generic. It's the sound a lot of indie bands want to achieve, very inspired by culture, classy but innovative. At one point I found myself thinking it was like Simon and Garfunkel on an alternate universe. I ended up highly appreciating the effort. It's not gonna be a favorite, or a typical play, but I'd love to have this LP and give it a sophisticated spin every once in a while. 3.7/5
This album falls in the category of brilliant and innovative but I will probably never feel like listening to it again.
Might be one of the weirdest but dopest albums ive ever heard. Shit rocked
Really enjoyable and a unique sound. I plan to check out some of their subsequent albums. Default sounds extremely familiar, but I can't pin down where I know it from.
Bright and surprisingly fun!
Groovy and interesting
I was surprised I had never heard this before. I enjoyes the album- reminded me of Animal Collective or LCD Soundsystem, but more rock focused in their approach. The songs were good and I appreciated the blending of genres. Overall- 3.5/5
This was completely new to me: never even heard of the artist, let alone heard a track before. Hail Bop kept reminding me of something else, but the name was just out of grasp the whole time. I liked it but that sense of "what is this?" was really distracting. I liked Default too - instantly catchy for my brain. Firewater was back to reminding me of the mystery other band... The album carried on in this vein: always liking it, always trying to place it, until I got to Zumm Zumm and then it hit me: it was Free The Bees by The Bees but with synths. I'm not even convinced the two bands sound in any way alike but at least my brain could stop trying to puzzle it out. I did genuinely enjoy this whole album, though absolutely understand why others would mark it down, because it is a little samey. It's just I like the thing it's repeating, so that doesn't bother me. 4/5
This was pretty good, but didn't blow me away. Just generally a pleasant listen, but without really grabbing me
I was worried based on the scant description of an album and band that I had completely missed, but this turned out to be a decent album. More Beta Band than crazy experimental. Catchy.
Wow, this may be well over 10 years old, but being my first time listening to Django Django this feels like a fresh new find. They are playing with some modern synth and computer based recording techniques but those don't overpower the actual songwriting and simple guitar and drum rhythms. This album totally pulled me in. It's super hypnotic and "trippy" but without the cliches of that often overplayed genre. I enjoyed listening to this and will check out more of these guys.
I really liked this, the mix of sounds and genres is nicely composed, reminds me of Gomez.
I did not like this, it’s got a good bit of electronica mixed in and that’s not my jam. That being said, this mix of indie rock and electronica is clearly well done, I almost liked it. So if that genre is your jam I’d give this a listen. 4 stars for talent, just not for me.
This was better than I thought it would be and I wanted to listen to it again.
Chill, and quite experimental. But I wouldn't be listening to it on repeat
I enjoy slightly weirder stuff like this. 3.5/5
There's a weird corner of the sonosphere where Fleet Foxes, The Beach Boys, Portugal the Man, space jazz, and something else intersect, and these guys found it. Extra points for keeping me guessing.
Color me amazed, but I thought this was really cool. Reminded me of Of Montreal (maybe) — someone in that neighborhood. But where this could have been innocuous or annoying, it was playful and melodic and only got on my nerves once (Zumm Zumm). So maybe not a 4 but I'm feeling it... so it is!
I enjoyed this. Good vocals. Good alt sound.
I'd never heard about this band before, but this album was definitely a pleasant surprise; especially the production, which is remarkable. The mix of acoustic instruments, electronic textures and layered vocals is impeccable. Wor and Default were standout tracks for me.
V good
Vocals aren't amazing but the rest of the music is fun
the best way i can describe this album is a modernist take on prog rock... or pop. i'm just gonna call it progressive. being a bit of a music oldhead, it's really cool hearing some less mainstream stuff from more recent times, especially if it's not, like... weird overly pretentious noise. this album makes you feel like you're stuck in the sahara desert. this album sounds like a group of travelling hippies, setting up shelter and praising the sun. it's the kind of spacey weird sound that you can get lost in easy. at times it can sound like surf rock. it's an interesting listen if you want something different in your musical palette.
Kind of a sucker for this era of music
This album has a slightly pleasing retro psych-lite feel to it. I'm not sure it really ticks all the boxes for me, but it's pretty decent art pop. Not something I'll return to, though.
Reminds me of animal collective
Never heard of them. Pleasantly surprised, good background music.
I remember resisting a lot of hype around this when it was released and then feeling stupid when I eventually heard it and realised it was actually kinda my thing. Still, having read so much about how original it was, I found it surprising that it was basically The Beta Band. Still at least it’s a decent listen all the way through, so since The 3EPs is a compilation, Django Django have made the album that The Beta Band never managed.
The debut by Django Django was a neat electro-pop/rock outing that was great to help soundtrack part of my workday. Best: Skies Over Cairo Worst: Love's Dart
Best Song: Default. I really like the trippy/glitchy elements in combination with the more standard indie rock trappings. Worst Song: Hand of Man. Just a bit more dull, more ordinary song in the middle of the album. Overall: Well hell, this was fun. The vocal harmonies were great, but there was also so much more than that. Very mildly psychedelic, filled with neat little bits of experimentation. A cool new discovery for me.
I've been listening to Django Django for a while. Solid album. Best songs are Default, Waveforms, WOR and Hand of Man.
One of those that I didn't think I'd like, but found very entertaining and varied. 4.
Houden we erin!
Upbeat with good percussion, was nodding my head to the music the whole time.
Cool blend of electronic, funk, psych rock, and more. Had never heard of them but will def dive deeper. "Default" was the highlight for me.
Surprisingly good. Reminds me of a cool modern blend of Beach Boys with Simon and Garfunkel. Adding this to my rotation of unusual albums.
Wow, never heard this one before, and I'm smitten. Fantastic album. Sounds great, so catchy. Had a lot of fun getting to know this one. I'll be back
Pleasantly surprised by this! Has some real 80s flavor.
Somehow it's fun, psychedelic, and atmospheric all at the same time. 3.5/5.0: Very Good
2010s rock with quirky electronic elements. Art rock. Creative and catchy. Interesting use of percussion.
Blind album and artist. I was very invested in some of the layers stacking and being removed and replaced with 1-off effects. Some of the songs were bangers.
Surprised I missed that one having know the singles and being a big fan of alt-j. Pretty solid from beginning to end and definitely a nice variety
I liked the first half of the album more than the last half I think. Maybe that's because the first tracks are best, or maybe it just became less novel to me as the tracks went on. I find the mix of synths and physical percussion instruments interesting Standouts Default Waveforms Zumm Zumm Silver Rays 4/5
Whenever I see one of these no-name, never done anything of consequence English bands pop up as my latest album, I always cringe. They rarely, if ever are worth listening to. Generally, they are amongst the worst albums on this list, and I always wonder how they got included on a "must hear" list (yes, I know the answer is the bias the English authors have towards English bands). However, I try to listen with an open mind and I have to admit that this was one of the best of those bands that I have tried. Not that they needed to be included on this list, as they are check none of the boxes that they should for inclusion: innovative, great, popular, or influential. That said, they are interesting and have some decent songs. The signing is not amazing, to be sure, but it is solid, especially in some of the harmonies. However, right when this album started with Introduction, I found myself intrigued. This blended into Hail Bop and I was even more drawn in, especially when the guitars came in on this track. It was a bit warped, but that only added to the tune. I see that Default is the most popular song and it was fine, though it's carried by the various effects they have going on, including the bouncing rhythm at various points. Absent those pieces, it's not that great a tune. Firewater had a catchy intro. Kind of sounded like what we might have gotten if the Beatles went full hippie. On the fence about whether this is a keeper or not. The singing holds this back, as it is so basic. Might add it just to see if I keep listening or skip it when it pops up on my personal list. Waveforms is also not great, though there is a fullness to the sound at certain points in this song that I somewhat dig, especially with how they have different vocal arrangements on top of each other. Zumm Zumm might be the worst song on this record. Very repetitive with limited to like the first time I heard it, let alone over and over again. Hand of Man had some good harmonies and I liked the limited arrangement, though that did make the song a bit sleepy. Love's Dart reminded me a bit of a Mumford and Sons type of song, mainly because of its pace. That said, I was longing for some fast guitar playing on this as a result. Wor's back half isn't bad, it just takes too long to get through the front half to really care. Storm was a solid track, not much more to say. Just kind of there. Life's a Beach was fun, mainly because it had a bit of a Beach Boys tinge to it. Sky's Over Cairo was cool until it went into the Indian vibe, which I just wasn't crazy about. Even if the overall sound of this track is consistent with the sound of the band, this particular song didn't seem to fit with the rest of the album. Silver Rays was a good closer. Trippy in similar ways to other parts of this album, builds in good spots. Felt like it could have been an anthem kind of song, but it does fall short of such a lofty goal. Still, a cool track to end with. Is it an amazing album? No. It's far from a cover-to-cover listen. But there is enough here to give it an average rating and a bonus star for hearing something completely new and getting a few new tracks for my own library.
I’m enjoying this more than I thought I might. Some legitimately fun bops here.
4/5
A pretty inconsequential but fun listen. I didn't mind any part of it, and I enjoyed the bit more sparse production here. You can hear the influence the likes of LCD Soundsystem had on this band. It's fun dance Punk-esque music. Not too high art, not too important and probably not worthy of being included on this list, but a really enjoyable bop to me. The hell is that album cover though.
Opening song was like being in a whirlpool, watching genres bend by you in a swirl. Overall great harmonies
Started slow for me but started jiving with it more as it went. Hypnotic.
Bongo bongo!
Another Brit band that I never heard of on this list - guess I should get used to that. Better than yesterday’s Brit band I never heard though. Standouts were "Hail Bop" , "Default", "Life's a Beach" and "Silver Rays". "Skies Over Cairo" was interesting also
This was one of those Gems of an album that comes up through this project! Having never heard of this band before I was joyfully reminded that there are many talented musicians out there that I still haven’t heard!
Django Django’s self-titled debut is pure fun. I remember loving it when it first came out and even rushing off to see them live at Wolverhampton Civic Hall. Strangely though, I never followed up on anything they released after this. Revisiting it now, I’m glad to say it still holds up brilliantly. Tracks like Default, Zumm Zumm, and Hail Bop sound as fresh and different as they did on release—even if I’ve never had a clue what the lyrics actually mean. The whole record feels inventive, playful, and consistently enjoyable. Favourite track: Hail Bop Least favourite track: Honestly, every track earns its place. Album artwork: A striking and stylish cover that fits the music perfectly.
Not a huge electronic music person. I appreciate the blend of digital and analogue instruments.
I really like this album - I adored it when it came out. But I am confused as to why this album is on this list when Alt-J's An Awesome Wave was released the same year and is in my opinion better and had a much larger cultural impact.
A bit of a throwback to the 60s with a mix of 21st century quirkiness. Normally a blend that would annoy me, but for some reason struck me as just right today.
Their focus seems to be on stripped down rhythms, and they do them well. The playful electronics are mostly enhancing, rather than annoying. While this is most definitely bubblegum, when one wants to blow bubbles, this is not a bad choice.
This is fun! Like a They Might Be Giants, Floyd and Guster mashup. 3.75* rounding up.
Fun. Different pretty good
Wonderfully weird and I love the 60s aesthetic
Original
So, we all know what a retro throwback is, right? We've probably seen **tons** of them in this day and age — 'coz ain't nuthin' some people love than to appeal to someone's sense of nostalgia with **old things**. I know I've heard my fair share of musical ones. Bruno Mars has done a ton, though always with the ear to still make it contemporary and not just a throwback for the sake of it. They're something I find I have a certain fondness for, even as much as I realize this sort of nostalgia-bait isn't exactly a good thing for art. Now, Django Django's eponymous debut album is not a retro throwback. It certainly **does** evoke a lot of the sounds and feelings I associate with a strand of 60's music, but I wouldn't say it's a throwback to that stuff. More, I'd say it's... Retro futurism. From the future. Which is now the past. You know. It's like... Stop for a second to imagine a world where the 60's were still happening. Someone, culture never moved on from the aesthetics of the 60's — and I do mean just the culture; let's leave any political ramifications out of this discussion because I do **not** have the insight to comment on **that**. Just pretend this is some kind of parallel universe like you'd see in a movie or TV show. This feels like the music they'd have there: very PET SOUNDS Beach Boys, with a lot of psychedelic overtones, but processed through more contemporary (as in 2000's) electronic music. And a little bit of The White Stripes, too, to fully steal the comparisons a fellow group member made. It's a very unique blend of influences I don't think I've ever heard before, and I'm kind of surprised it turned out as good as it did. Like, it's one of those "I'm not WOWIE-WOW-WOW'd by it" albums, but regardless, I'd still say there's not a bad song in the lot. It's all very... Well, to wipe another word from my group member's review, mesmerizing. The kind of stuff where if you don't end up paying too close attention to it, you can almost fall into a trance with the way this thing flows. Just very easy stuff to glide on. Like, I wouldn't call it background music (technically anything can be, let's be real, but that's besides the point). It's just... I think if you wanna jus' kinda turn your brain off to it, but not completely space out... It's a fine one to float on. Yeah, honestly, I didn't come into this album with any expectations beyond "Mm, that's a trippy cover," and I gotta say, I'm pleasantly surprised. It's a good time — good on you for that, Django Django. Throwback or futurism or whatever, that's really all I can ask for.
I was very surprised by how much I liked this album. Nice one.
Itsa good vibe
This was weird and I liked it!
Favorite Track: Life's A Beach
Never heard of these guys before, but I played this album in the office and two coworkers immediately asked what song was playing when Default came on. Really cool discovery! My favourites are: WOR and Firewater
Never heard of this group, really enjoyed it. Started to drag in the middle but stuck the landing. Favorite songs: Hail Bop, Zumm Zumm, Life's A Beach
Sober: “This is cute. It’s like a tribute to that Nuggets box set. Retro with a modern electronic flare. Nothing revolutionary.” High: "This is revolutionary!"
> Great opener, drew me in and made me bounce up and down. And it's not just a simple groove -- it's dense, it's exciting, it's alive > "Default" reminds me of... Kraftwerk + Pink Floyd + mid-2000's indie rock. I love it > Really an interesting usage and balance of electronic music with analog instruments. It's real quirky and imaginative, this time Zumm Zumm reminds me of Stereolab
Such a cool, weird, unique album. Good blend of electronic and real instruments, and awesome harmonies through the whole thing. Never heard of these guys before but I dig it.
This band was more or less a blip for me, flaring at the same time as a couple of dozen other similar sounding indie bands. A good listen, but not revolutionary by any means. 3.5/5
First time I heard this album and I was impressed. Very blended sound and I was not able to identify what decade it was from. Enjoyable and creative sound.
Pretty interesting modern psychedelic
I like this. It inspired a whole day of genre exploration.
Giving an album I’ve never before listened to from a band I’ve never heard of four stars was not on my bingo card, but it’s what I had hoped to find in this project. I loved this album. It is by far the best new music discovery I’ve made here. I’m not even sure how to describe this sound, other than a fusion of 60s style psychedelic rock, 80s and 90s alternative, and modern day jam band stuff, with various international styles woven in here and there for good measure. And the lyrics are great too. Two snaps up!
Some good moments
Pretty cool mishmash of the 60s and modern sensibilities. Nicely done.
Based on the band name, the album cover and the description of the band as "art rock" on Wikipedia I assumed I would hate this album. It's nice to be wrong. The perfect kind of album that makes you want to get up and dance but it's too weird to do so without looking like you are having a seizure.
hail bop is so good! discovering music yay! I like these fun sounds would be fun drug music
Kind of like a 2000s version of Devo. I complained that TV On The Radio was too busy. These folks were busy but seemed to achieve what TVOTR couldn't. They stripped it down at times and weren't afraid to go silent for a beat. Kept everything cohesive to where they were going. Much better songwriting, IMHO. The Devo influence faded as the album progressed but the rest of the comments held true.
Their debut album. Art Rock / Indie. Great blend of styles. This album has great production. It's something different and has a brilliant energy and vibe. I want to go see this band. This is cool 2010s Indie. I was hooked right from the introduction, so Groovy and easy to listen to. It does get ever so slightly bloated at times but there was not a bad track on the album. Kind of electronic version of 60s psychedelic stuff. WOR is a fantastic track
Ok I thought this would suck. But this is a fun album with some killer engineering production.
Django Django - Django Django ⭐️⭐️⭐️ or ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I like & don't like this album. This very rarely happens to me. The music is better than the vocals that can be very annoying in a white boy trying to sound funky way, but the music can be very good and has that 1980's King Crimson vibe, here and there. I can't decide between a 3 and a 4. I guess if I saw it for sale cheap, I would buy it but not sure I would buy it at regular price. I'm confused! If you like 1980s King Crimson, Phish and white boys trying to sound funky this might be the album for you.
Fun album
Dang another shocker but a great record! A blend of interesting surf/desert rock, electronics and choppy vocals. A worthwhile listen.
Favorite Track: Default
Strong sound of the 2010's Band with Standouts in Hail Bop, Default, and Wor.
Oldtimer Kiffermusik
A band that passed me by at the time, but this album was worth discovering, belatedly. I thought it was very listenable throughout, with accessible, hummable hooks, a subtle but effective experimental streak, and a sound that belongs somewhere between the desert and the jungle. It reminds me a lot of Beck at times. In the grand scheme of things I feel I should cap this at 3.5 stars, because there's nothing here that hadn't kinda been done before, and because there aren't any stone-cold-classic tracks. But for overall enjoyment I'll round up. Let's keep this 4* train rollin', baby!!!
Vibey af
I’d totally forgotten this album existed, so was a delight to revisit!
so fun!!!
Listened to the singles Storm and Default quite a bit around the time this came out, but I think I've only heard the album itself once. Those days between the decline of physical sales and the rise of streaming probably contributing to this falling through the cracks somewhat as I didn't really follow the band's career after this despite really enjoying their sound at the time.
I really liked this. Too bad it’s not a Friday album so I could listen to it several times over the weekend to see if it warrants a 5. They have a decent sized discography, with a fair number of remix EPs. Will listen to more of this artist.
This was a lot of fun. Don’t think it has the makings of a 5, but a solid 4.
v good
Good.
I was surprised by this, quite enjoyed it.
Space vibes. Groovy. Very 2012. Beach boys + hot chip + the kinks.
This was honestly a bunch of certified bangers also. This was kinda like Tame Impala before Tame was Tame, ya know? I guess this was around the same time as Tame... nevertheless! This is a fun like Tame/Beatles vibe.
Some bops and nostalgia
Very pleasant and unusual music soaring vocal harmonies and interesting rhythms. I enjoyed listening to it but it’s quite unfamiliar and I’m not sure where it fits in my music library
