My parental status has caught up with my humour, but my music taste has not caught up with my parental status. Zero stars. Pile of rubbish
Hybrid Theory
Picture this, on 15 April 2026: A man in his late 30s (yes, no longer mid 30s, he's shed that image now), jogging across a park on a rainy afternoon. He is singing along with all the songs of this album, he knows every riff, every rap, every word. He is reliving his youth. Flashback to 2000: This man is now a 12 year-old boy, he has just started a new school in a shitty small town in Netherlands; he got a new haircut and a new bag. This boy is shedding his primary school skin, and becoming a teenager. This album is partly responsible for this shedding. It is part of his DNA. He is kicking the hell out of Paul Erik Greving (in stead of the opposite, which actually happened). He is walking the halls of his school, with this album on his walkman. He has played this taped cassette and knows it inside out. Whoever says this is 'bad' music, hasn't lived through this, man.

IT'S SUMMER
Not so much an album, more a feeling, a sense of movement, perpetual and habitual. Hypnotising at 3 am, cycling through a bleak industrial estate in my deserted home town

Absolutely brilliant album that I know already. Radiohead at their finest.
Probably brilliant and ahead of its time, but didn't quite connect so much
Yeah, you know, very much of its time. And I wasn't really into this type of music. For me it lacks a bit of dynamics. But I recognise it's definitely ground breaking for 1991!
Very good album with a lot of hits, only to be let down by its sound quality and annoying mixing
Some pretty good songs on here. La Grange is a banger. But it's all a bit samey, a bit too monotonous. And the slow song is just plain boring.
What a masterpiece. Coming from Motorhead to this was a real breath of fresh air. Beautifully composed song structures. ENGAGING and interesting listen.
Really great fun funk!
Meh
The pacey songs are very good. The slower less so.. Until I got to Blue Moon. What a beautiful, haunting track. I've never heard it like this, the original first version. Stunning.
Ah, I have this on vinyl! Let me put it on tonight and let you know.
I can't give this any higher, or lower than 5 stars, it's physically impossible
Really enjoyed this jazz, beautiful compositions
Groovy baby, good song. But by jove, do these records sound awful
OH this sounds very dated and a bit annoying.
Perfection. Amazing record.
Amazing record, well ahead of its time. I've heard so much about it, but I'm so happy to finally get the chance to fully listen to it. It does not disappoint, very familiar sounds and it's been sampled a lot by other artists. Seminal album. Full whack from me! Also, how is this released in 1989?!
Actually really enjoyed this little time capsule. It is a good sounding record that sounds really nice and full. Marty has an amazing voice. It sounds like it has just come fallen out of the wild wild west. Absolutely wild.
It didn't grab me as some of the other prog peers, close to the edge I thought was better. And some of the early Genesis I prefer as well. Not a bad album but just lacked a bit of bite for me.
Swing when you're winning. Taking me back to the old sweaty swingy New York, oh the good old times of misogyny and trumpets. Where everything was black and white and joyous. I guess you need to have fun post war. All things considered, this was a fun listen and I'm glad I did!
Get that air guitar out and go rocking. With a beautiful Tuesday's Gone (covered by Metallica) and Freebird, this album has really grown on me during the weekend. Played it on vinyl, this is really a lot of fun. All banger, all mash!
So, I initially thought it was like Red rain, but then it hit me like a sledgehammer. I didn't give up and started to enjoy that voice again. I wasn't on mercy street when I enjoyed this album big time. In my eyes, this is an excellent picture (birds)
Boring at best. This is an inconsistent mishmash of styles and it's not very well executed. Found myself getting annoyed with these guys. Even after a few listens it never really clicked. I have it on CD, but I won't bother taking it downstairs from the loft.
Masterpiece. Interesting and fascinating all the way through. Weird, wonderful and wicked at time, Mike was only 19 when he made this and he played most of the instruments. It was also the first record to be released on Virgin Records!
Initially very excited by the album, I was let down by a piece of work that didn't feel that well produced. None of the songs really stuck with with me and it felt kind of empty and soulless. She has many great albums, but this one didn't do it for me. I'll just put on the Kick Inside and drift off into the fog.
This is making me feel a lot of good things. What a joy to listen to, it's simple, but so effective. So rich and sparse at the same time. A fantastically simple album with so many hits. It makes so much sense to me now. However, it starts off incredible, but then it becomes a little bit samey - a little bit of variety couldn't have hurt. Hence not the 5* This made less sense to me when it came out.. In the late naughties I was listening to very different music, and catching up with rock and metal from the 90s. So this would have passed me by.
I certainly wasn't cool enough to be listening to this when it came out, and maybe I'm still not cool enough.. All hail to Thom Yorke. This album has always passed me by and never quite hit so much. I would place this among the lesser albums from them. It was made in the time of George W Bush being president and in the aftermath of 9/11. A bit too all over the place, too long, not consistent enough.
1001 Radiohead Side Projects you need to listen to before you die (thanks Oz!) Weird that it comes up with two Radiohead albums IN A ROW. What ARE the odds?! Surprisingly large, way bigger than winning the lottery. Which is kind of how I felt with this one. . Discovering Kid A at a later age, this was and has been a beautiful ride. Totally gorgeous and annoyingly predictable, I have jumped on the Thom Yorke bandwagon. Every song so well crafted. The Wish you Were here of Radiohead. Thank you.
Country rock soothing melodies! Probably quite good for its time and i have listened to it before. It's a lovely cover and I recognise Strength of Strings as a cover from Immortal Coil. Did it land with me? Not so much. But a nice ride nevertheless!
Well, I like the concept. I like a rock opera (American Idiot being one of my favourite albums). However this was just a crazy ride. It was amusing to look into the story, and to find out that there was a musical and a film of it. Glad to have gotten through it, but it wasn't easy. Bonkers mate
Thank you Jenny Lloyd for introducing me to this wonderful band a few years ago. Famously amazing sounding records, these guys really know how to produce an album. Best enjoyed on a good stereo or good headphones, they also sound great on a car stereo or a bluetooth speaker on Mersea Island, where i am currently residing with the family. So, I've grown to become a big fan of The Dan, I've seen Nearly Dan, a marvellous steely Dan cover band live, and it was one of the best live gigs I've been to. This is not my favourite album of theirs, Aja and Gaucho I prefer, as there are a few meh songs on there, despite it containing the biggest hits. Fire in the hole and Kings are not fantastic, so hence the 4*
Oh-Delay, apparently would have been the underlaying meaning of the title of this album. Although it only came out 2 years after Beck's previous album, with the hit single Loser on it. This is a real eclectic mix of style often described as hip-folk, where we can hear Beck's monosyllabic voice rapping and singing. And it's this mix of styles that I couldn't really get on with. I'm glad I listened to it a few times, but this antithesis of Kurt Cobain I could not get on with. Give me Eels, give me Weezer.
Linda Ronstadt's backing band in 1971 went on to form the Eagles! I really wanted this to be good and interesting and engaging, but it wasn't for me. Too much heartache for a man, the songs were very slow and kind of indiscernible. Sorry, this one was not for me.
3 breakups involving 6 people. Sadness. 10 stars.
Such a strong start and a very strong finish. What happened in the middle? The only song I liked that I didn't know was Early Bird. Chug All Night? Really?
I don't think I like Paul Simon. His voice is kind of annoying. 2 Stars for Mother and Child reunion, which is about a chicken and egg dish called 'Mother and Child Reunion'.
Elvis Costello welcoming us to a somewhat dreary and cold Monday working week. What a brilliant opener. It wasn't for me. Couldn't place it well and it all sounded a bit crispy to me. His slower stuff is quite nice.
Really quite an impressive album. I really enjoyed every song of this. Maybe it's because we've have a large spell of albums from '70s men? Regardless, the hits were great, but also the rest of the album was excellent. Sounds very timeless and cool. 5* will definitely play again!
8th Century Islamic Chants? Yes please!
Yes, enjoyed these a lot! Fantastic story telling. I think I prefer some of his later stuff, the last song had a bit of a humpapa feel to it.
Lots of bangers on here. Seminal album that helped shape the way rock looks like now. I hadn't listened to it entirely before, as I don't think I was cool enough when I was 14 unfortunately. Initially it grated a bit on me as his voice can sometimes come across a bit annoying (much like with Vampire Weekend). But after listening to it on headphones it kind of all made sense.
At the time overlooked by critics, this is a fantastic album by Thom Yorke and his friends. A real evolution from Pablo Honey. I was going to give it 4 stars, but upon listening to it again and again, it's up to 4.5, so rounding up to a 5. I just really do not like Black Star, it sounds shrill to me.
As John Peele once said: "It's a bit much for a Tuesday. " Maybe it's a case of 'you should have been there'? To be fair, it sounded okay on my run, but when I was done with running, there was still half to go. A bit long for me and not quite my flavour of EDM
The old school Black Keys! Loved it, but then again I listened to it on a haze of caffeine. Banger after banger. Even the ones I didn't know were great!
I am not really understanding why this album is on here. Much more interesting albums have come out in 1997. Sorry. I did like Gaz' recent solo outing. But this is just a bit too simple.
Dear Nina, I love your loving ways! Thanks, Tim For an album that was compiled from several recordings left over from previous sessions in 1964 and 1965 this feels like a great collection of songs. This was the first album of Nina Simone I have bought and I have played in many many times on dark and moody evenings. Absolutely stunning and I love every single song.
Play this LOUD! Phenomenal piece of music. Tony's drums are hypnotising and it all works together so well. What a joy to have this one b2b with Nina Simone. It ALMOST looks like this list is quite diverse!
Do-wap-ba-ba-doo-ba-ba-da-bam-bang Oh yes, music history was made with this. Great stuff. Very fun to listen to, listening to history, rather than good music.
Fantastic album, taking me right back to working in the Dutch equivalent to HMV called Free Record Shop. I can still remember opening up and closing down the shop, the smells permeating from the next door ice cream shop and the people buying terrible music. Best job ever.
Incredible album of the great Stevie Wonder. There are a few cheesy songs on there, that prevent this from going to a full 5*, but his album Innervisions in my opinion is perfection. What an amazing artist.
When not in a rush I liked it very much Played a few times Much the same rhymes Solomon not to blame it all sounds the same
Released in my year of birth This album gave me mirth Music for the masses These intrepid molasses Synth beats all around Drum computer can be found Promises me I'm safe as houses As long as I remember who wears the trousers

(So cold) Maybe I'm just too demanding Maybe I'm just like my father, too bold Maybe you're just like my mother She's never satisfied (She's never satisfied) Why do we scream at each other This is what it sounds like When doves cry

Did they make more albums? Actually an enjoyable listen. Maybe a bit more raw, but it still contains the catchy melodies that made Pet Sounds the way it is.

Farts and stones
Totally my thing, also poignant that this album was picked on the day the pope was elected. Contrary to what everyone seems to think, I like the anti religion. It's angry, raw, dark. He was also right about Jimmy Savile all the way back in 1978.
This is the kind of prison reform I can get behind Most familiar with the San Quentin one, This one hits harder It's starker, darker Imagine being in prison and this Taylor Swift performing..
My least favourite of Dave Grohl's side project. +1 for low
It rocks It's loud Beautiful cover Insane times to come
Great music Memorable sequences Layered sounds Beautiful textures A great find
Lovely, Just lovely
Mother saved this album from a 2 star I made it through that far It's easy to hate on Sting But it just gets a bit dull No fulfilment in full Not an album that will cling
A bit too much Too long Too much freaky sounds
Most songs sound quite similar And it being a long album Doesn't bode well But then black cat comes along Great song
A perfect example of dark indie that I absolutely love but that has passed me by when i was 22 years old in 2010. Lovely to visit.
Classic 2 star. 1 great song

Do we need this?
Despite Eric being a certified Douche, this is good stuff.
Rock and roll babes
The perfect soundtrack for driving through the hills of Arran, rugged, tranquil and utterly beautiful
The perfect soundtrack for cruising through the rugged landscape or the North Pennines
Soooo damn sweet, I love it.
Ohhh I like it when it goes all Eno after the terrible first few songs. Hmm hypnotic, hmm weird, hmm repetitive
I wanted to like this so bad But in the end It was actually just so bad
All a bit meh, listened to it in the car a few times but now thinking about it, it didn't really stick
Gosh, so much music coming out of the 1970s, some of it good, some of it bad. This is one of those gems, that sound like it could be a lot older. This transports you to the wild west, by a roaring fire, it's been a sunny day but the chill has come into the air. You are sipping a bourbon and listening to that chatty uncle telling stories about their love interests. Their voice not too annoying, deep, or too cheesy. Just about right.
I don't love big band, but I love this! I prefer his work with Coltrane a bit later on, but this was a phenomenal listen. To be honest, I listened to the full 44 minute version (OG) NOT the 2 hour version.. Might revisit that a bit later. Complex arrangements, great song structures and excellent musicians!
It's not really an album when it hasn't really been released. Nor when it's partially available everywhere.
Superb
Yes this was wonderful. Even the much hated student demonstration came through well. How much is that because Brian died? Funny to have picked an album where he didn't have so much to do with. RIP Brian
An album that I have carried everywhere. A single part of a whole life The single part of his single life Gone too soon
Perfect napping music. Nothing interesting to listen to here I'm afraid
I always thought I hated Kiss Now I know for sure I hate this

It's unfair because I know this album inside out. I'm back in Dave Badloe's bedroom I've inserted the burned CD in his Sony CD changer stereo tower We are headbanging We are shouting and screaming INSIDE MICHELLE I WAIT AND BLEED Who is Michelle? This is youth This is my youth
An Easy 5 Stars from me. The first Stevie album that I bought, I didn't know what I got myself into. Blown away by this, and I still hear new details on this album that I'd never heard. First time listening to this digitally, it does not disappoint, better instrument separation makes for an even more engaging listen. My favourite Stevie Wonder album and a welcome change from last week's white male rock music.
An 11 minute version of street life? Yes please! Very funny coincidence, I got this album from Jenny's aunt last month, I played it for the first time last week and loved it. I cleaned it last night in the record cleaner, so you can imagine my surprise when this album popped up this morning. Really great music. Love it! 3.5 stars if I could, but I can't! so 3
An EPIC New Wave Synth Album I can get behind. Lapping this up. Lovely!
This is a Review by Tim The amount of stars that I will give it is 3 I really got into the Black Keys in the late noughties, loving 9AM Automatic, I still love that riff. Then they became really big and had a lot of commercial success. I did see them live a fair amount of times and it was always quite fun. Until I saw them in Alexandra Palace when the crowd was just full of losers. This has really put me off the band resulting in me not really listening to them at all anymore.
Amazing album, I did a real deep dive this weekend. And this morning again. It is maybe 2 or 3 songs too long..
Some good songs, some bad songs. The Black Keys of the 70s? Jim does have an iconic voice and Riders on the Storm is quite the tune.
Shut up and take my Monae. My favourite discovery this year yet. Folk, soul, rock, psychedelic rock, hip hop, R&B. All beautifully crafted in one brilliant album. Totally surprised, totally Wowed!
A strange and weird and wonderful journey through an alternative universe where the Who shouldn't exist and these guys are more popular. That cover is pretty bad though..
Dark, moody, stark. Yes please Perfect summer tunes
Great jazz, of the same organ ilk as Booker T's Green Onions.
Woefully underrated by me. Another discovery from the synth pop era. This is taking a lot of inspiration from prog rock on the non hit songs. Lovely stuff.
A very enjoyable listen. Helped me with being very very productive today. Is it relevant? No, not anymore. Is it good? Mweh, it's pretty good. It's from the Warp label!
A very fun listen!
SupercaliSkronkaFunkaLICIOUS Sunglasses obliged whilst listening to this album How can anyone not enjoy this?
Dolly telling stories about men. One song really grabbed me and that was Early Morning Breeze, that bass intro was gorgeous.
Hard Rock But in a good way. Classic album with some very good songs, riffs. Doesn't feel like they've stolen so much from the blues on this one.
Come on! It's THE FREEWHEELIN' BOB DYLAN So many hits. Beautiful folk on an LP. And it's his second one!
Never heard it in full! Actually never heard of any albums of them. The big hit was obvious, although I do prefer the remix. The thick synths were great but the slow songs a bit dull. Most of the ones i didn't recognise were rather boring.
Gosh, music has evolved in the last 70 years. I found this to be a bit too simplistic and the songs all look alike, nothing like the amazing jazz coming from this era. The songs sounded very alike and I thought is wasn't very interesting.
The best elevator music on the market. This is an amazing album, incredibly well produced and sounding so damn smooth and nice. There are simply no rough edges to be found on this. Ideal music for Sunday Morning Jazz Club.
1* extra for the hits. For the rest: lame lame lame
It's easy to hate on Aerosmith. I'm an easy kind of guy.
MET0L! Rest in Paradise Ozzy! It is crazy to think that he only performed about 2 weeks ago in Birmingham with the whole metal ensemble. I'm kind of remorseful of not going to Ozzy's leaving party, but I have to remember I'm not really a metalhead anymore. This however, was great to visit. I have not listened to this before but I really enjoyed it. A wide variety of musical styles blended into one great 42 minute package. Special thanks to their sponsor: Columbian Marching Powder
Totally marvellous and iconic.
The best of the best. Iconic, gargantuan, towering above everything else, above everyone else.
A good formula - Done over and over becomes repetitive from cover to cover
This is jazz and funk at its best So great, so fine They became even better later on in the 70s
This should have been in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater ! What an amazing discovery. I loved De La Soul, but this is totally wonderful. And finally some hip-hop as well! The rhymes, the flow, the lack of expletives, just beautiful! It's a full 5 for me!
This Byrd is NOT the word.
Just because it's not as good as sgt. Pepper, it doesn't mean it's not a 5* affair
Triple denim blue eyed soul. But with a lot of covers. What a wonderful voice. It sent me to 80s Dusty and I loved her reinvention with the PSB. This album was lovely and the standout track was Wishin' and Hopin' Also, I did not know she was british! Go figure!
Hooky, edgy and well ahead of their time. Still sounds as urgent and necessary as it did at that time. Especially sitting here on my parents' sofa in the Netherlands, and seeing what utter garbage TV they are watching, this was a jarring listen. It's a 5 from me.
Now this is what we call bongo. I'm the king of bongo, I'm the king of bongo bong. No manu chao to be seen here. Apache is an absolute banger. But the whole thing seems a bit too long.
Not so much an album, more a feeling, a sense of movement, perpetual and habitual. Hypnotising at 3 am, cycling through a bleak industrial estate in my deserted home town
A total landmark album for my teenage years, who i was at the time and who i am now.
Stone cold classic. So ahead of its time. Production sounds lush and the songs are so catchy and lovely.
Yeah no, I can do 8 minutes of jamming.. But 1.5 hours of it.. Impenetrable. With some good bits
Fun listen. One hair away from hair metal. I love they went all trash later on.
A 1001 Albums Generator discovery for me. Wow, this has totally blown me away. 33 minutes of utter brilliance by Janis here. I had never heard this in full, but this was totally brilliant. Normally I wouldn't be able to listen to Janis Joplin for longer periods of time, but this album made me change my mind. After about 6 listens this has now become part of my DNA.
Excellent stuff. Great hits. Probably very new and Wicked for the time when it came out.
Wow, going from Adele to Bob Dylan is quite the changeover. Right, this was a 1965 absolute masterpiece, the first time where Bob Dylan didn't necessarily sound folky, but with his backing band sounding really very rock-y. This album takes me back to discovering Bob Dylan in London. Opening up new worlds, new music. There is something about listening to a classic album that you really like for the first time. It just sticks with you. The environment, sounds, energy of that time is permanently etched.
I want to be a door, A door between the past and the future Where the future sounds like the past and the past sounds like the future That's what the Stone Roses have done here. Something that sounds so dated, yet so progressive and modern. It's the ultimate paradox, even to this date.
I FEEL SO ALIVE RIGHT NOW
Dirty grungy deathly good
This album is like a friend. And all the songs are my friends as well.
Meh
Lovely harmony
Good but not as good as the best of
Pretty good, sabotage is a killer track. The song with q-tip is awesome. The rest is a little bit f-ill communication
It's a great album with a lot of variety, but I don't know it as well as some of the others
A very strange mix of the Beatles, early David Bowie, and beach boys. A worthwhile listen and good to know that they made this stuff before they went all disco. Also interesting to know that the brothers Gibb were raised in Chorlton, Manchester. Reading more about how they got to fame was cool. Definitely a tough listen if you were expecting disco though!
This album's too good! Great discovery, delicious demon was a great song!
I always thought I wouldn't like Paul Weller. Now I know for sure. File under: the who, Tom Petty and other uninteresting dudes.
Solid 5 stars. All day every day.
I didn't like him when I was young and I still don't like him now. 1 extra star for Stan
Throughout listening to this I keep on wanting to turn it off. I like psychedelia, but not like this. Thank you. It's just all so cringy, I feel embarrassed for them to have made this. It's like a really bad monty Python sketch. One where they took out all the jokes.
You know what? I really enjoyed this. I had no idea what to expect and was expecting a much worse experience than what was provided here. I never heard of these guys but honestly it was really a fun listen.
I - meh - gine More like
GOAT. All praise Patti! I didn't properly appreciate Patti until after reading Just Kids. It's such a beautiful book, I remember the heart wrenching passages and discussing it with book club afterwards. Then Horses is just an absolutely phenomenal album. WOW. The upsweeping guitar, the rhythm sections, it's straight from Velvet Underground, New York Punk, boy this woman has power.
Repetitive, and a bit boring. On paper i should really like this but no songs really stood out to me.
A bit long, but some very nice songs on here. Minus point for length Minus point for some weird ass songs.
They just don't make them like this anymore. My hotmail address was KoRnTimmie@hotmail.com back in 2002, so I can't give this a one star.. Alright, give it 3 stars for freak on a leash. Mbaaah maam mumm brapapapapap
A guilty pleasure at best, misogyny at its worst. Bonus points for it being 45 minutes exactly. I also like that ZZ Top essentially came out of the Fake Zombies USA resurrection.
Enjoyed this a lot in the end.
The best of the best mid nineties indie
No, this didn't do it for me. Spanish Dancer was good, but the rest was not good. I respect that he's had a long old career, but this wasn't great. Nice cover though.
Dull as dishwater, tepid and annoying. Hot Chip is not for me. Back to Blood Orange - Essex Honey. That suits me much better at the moment.
WOW WOW WOW This has creeped and crawled right under my skin. The songs are stuck in my head like bats in the daytime All the songs are brilliantly arranged and sounding incredible. You can hear, taste and feel the anger and urgency in this. A fantastic discovery, and I'm glad to be ending the week with this marvel.
It's Kendrick, come on! I started listening to Kendrick Lamar when he released DNA, an absolutely amazing album too. Then this album was on offer and bought it blind. It was a revelation. I've been a fan since.
Quite enjoyed this
Great tunes and a fantastic discovery. Walk this way is an incredible song. Cornerstones of hiphop.
What an absolute blast of an album. It's iconic, cleverly sequenced and sounding excellent, even on very thin vinyl it has a lovely weighty sound. A great example of how patriotism and anti-patriotism can all live together.
Some cracking singles, great hits! Lush production and great instrumentation But About 30 minutes too long, they should have just kept the Hymns and cut out the urban.
Some absolute bangers. Soundtrack to the background of my twenties. Not anything that I've listened to on purpose, but her songs are etched in my brain because I was alive at that time, via osmosis. Yes this was good and sounded good.
A very pleasant discovery! I remember that the guy in my local record store recommended this one and now I regret not picking it up then.
Really not sure what to think of this. It lays the foundations of a lot of things i like, but i just have no connection to it. I saw them live in 2009 or so and it was the same, not for me.
Released in my birth year! Finally an album from 1987. I enjoyed this a lot, I was not familiar with Darklands and I only know Psychocandy, which I am not a massive fan of. This however feels a step up from that, there's some very good songs on here and the album is 36 minutes long. It had a gothy post-punky feel to it, that I really enjoyed. An excellent autumn record.
Timeless perfection, infinite stars
Lovely, just lovely stuff.
This is VERY scary! Last weekend I bought English Settlement on LP and now this beautiful record shows up. Having listened to this a few times now I can safely say I really enjoyed this record. XTC is one of the best unknown bands and deserve a hell of a lot more attention than they are getting. The story behind this album is very interesting too, and worth looking into, Pitchfork did a great piece on this. Lovely album cover, great music, great production. Yes this was very good!
So we got: punk - post punk - blues - psychobilly all wrapped up in a very cool jacket. I can definitely get jiggy with this. I'm also loving the 80s week we seem to be having.
Sensational
No thanks, I don't want to spend time with this twee garbage. Utter nonsense. Even California Dreaming really pissed me off.
My anger from last album's mamas and papas got directed into this album. This album seems trapped in the ether of time. Anger, violence, depression, anxiety, frustration. So vivid, so frantic First time of properly listening to this.
It's good to know that not all music on this list is amazing or awful. Didn't love this, didn't hate it. Just a pleasant listen. I don't understand why we need 2 albums of these guys on the list though? Surely we just need the debut that has the hits on it?
This is the shit I signed up for. Great great stuff from 1960.
Is this what I needed on a rainy, blustery horrible day in the UK? Hell yeah! Are there better dance pop acts around? Oh yes of course, but this seems to hit the spot today. But definitely something to be in the mood for. If I was in a grumpy, pretentious mood, I'd be less up for this. The absolute hits Praise you, Rockafeller Skank and Right here, Right now are incredible. I've seen him live a few times and it's always been a great party. So thank you Norman!
This shit slaps. When I see this in a record store, I'll need to buy it.
Got really excited Then was really let down It's all a bit boring isn't it?
Mix David Bowie with the Beatles and pour over a Halloween sauce.
A good album, great length and sounding quite ahead of its time. 3.5 for me , but rounding down.
Pretty great album. Separating the art from the artist.
P funk at its absolute best. What a fantastic ride. And the companion EP was also fantastic.
Can meets Kraftwerk. This sounds like a lot of bands that I like would have liked as well. I like. I like a lot.
Sun Kil Moon meets Jason Molina (Songs:Ohia) Gorgeous. And had me grabbed on the second song on the first listen. This is my type of pretentious sad man music. My blues.
6 stars if possible. NYC State of Mind Life's a bitch The world is yours WHAT A RUN OF SONGS! An album that clocks under 39 minutes and that packs SUCH a punch. I discovered this criminally late in my life, but I'm glad it's in there nonetheless.
Pretty good album. First album of what now has become a slightly annoying stadium rock band
So wonderful. Like someone said: the warmest cup of coffee with the coziest blanket on the coldest day.
George Meh-chael. This wasn't what I wanted it to be. A lot of slow songs, not enough fun songs.
Have listened to this about 7 times via headphones, via the radio and just couldn't get on with it. It was fun, but the songs just don't stick and there's no real standout ones in there. The production is terrible, the instruments sound like they were recorded in a leaky pond.
I blame the Mama's and the Papa's that kicked off this horrible weird stint of separating art from the artist. I never liked him, don't like him now and won't give him my Spotify stream. Protest vote here.
Pure raw power. This moved something in me, involuntary, it pushed, it growled, it's so ahead and so different. Give me this over all the rock drivel that came out around the same time. This kicks ass, man.
Not My Generation, mate. What a hideous jacket, what a hideous album.
Enjoyed this immensely on this immensely sad day. Soothing after a big loss.
I very much enjoyed this, in a same universe of Van Morrison and Nick Drake we have an outlier planet of John Martyn.
Wow this was excellent!!
Millennial alert! Fantastic album, indie rock staple. Like myself, it's a real product of its time. Sweaty sticky dancefloor, £1 bottles of beer, stinky people, what more do you want?
This should be my thing. But it's not. It feels like an American version of Elbow, but without the singalongs
Her voice really started to get annoying at some point.
Bosh
Easy 5 for me. What a transition from punk to.. well.. I guess post punk. She has her own sound, her own universe. In the same spheres as Nick Cave, Radiohead. And it's not a surprise that they are so intertwined.
Absolute filled to the brim with classics. I probably prefer this to parachutes. If only they kept it at this..
Pretty cool collection of songs, but a bit weird and creepy for me right now. Not very coherent and consistent. Creepy jazz trip hop?
Totally bonkers and insane. Loved every single minute of this. I FEEL SO ANGRY RIGHT NOW.
Man, I never loved Aretha as much as i do now
My parental status has caught up with my humour, but my music taste has not caught up with my parental status. Zero stars. Pile of rubbish
My favourite Metallica album. Perfection. Seen it live many times, sounds of my youth.
Weird, wonderful and droney. Lots of influences here, ESG on the drums, lofi slacker singing of Pavement, drones from a different planet.
This is some very good shit. Weird and wonderful
Yeah, not really for me on this specific day. When I sat down to listen to it, the songs just didn't come through. I know people really like this, but I never really got on with it. Maybe it's because I had a stressful day.
A four for Jurassic 5. Fabulous beats and great flows.
A good old 3 star experience. I liked the tubes a lot and happy I got to listen to the hits. Also enjoyed reading about the back story of the faces and small faces.
Wow, what a strong start to the album for it to really come down tumbling hard for the rest of it. Interesting to have The Faces yesterday, and then Rolling Stones today, as Ron Wood moved from the Small Faces to the Rolling Stones in the early seventie's. IYKYK
Another 3 star experience for me. Some nice songs. But a bit samey. Interesting to put this against all the other stuff that was happening all the time though and it does seem quite progressive
Sorry, I was visiting Santa in Lapland. 5 stars for me for this perfect soul album by Otis Redding. Beautiful, urgent and still very very modern.
Fun! Very fun! It did always sound like they were about to burst into a song that I recognise, but actually they never did.
Marvellous
Not the party record i wanted it to be
Loving this a lot! In the extension of Outkast, but maybe a bit less drawn out. Super fun collaborations and musically excellent.
Actually a really good album. I liked the jammy sessions and I also enjoyed the hits.
A stone cold classic, a bedrock for hip hop. Enjoyed this immensely. I have it on vinyl, and it took me a while to get into. Comments about misogyny and violence are ridiculous, just listen to stupid bands like Aerosmith and Rolling Stones and you'll find that these guys have been doing it for much longer!¬
As a reviewer said previously, there's only vanilla here, no parsely, sage, rosemary OR thyme. I just don't really like S&G, not solo, not together. Despite the 28 minute runtime, I just couldn't get through to it.
I Enjoyed listening to this! It's probably not as good as Forever Changes, which I'm looking forward to discovering when it comes.
This one totally blew me away. Beautiful cover and a collection of amazing songs. It's a Songs:Ohia, neutral Milk hotel combination with some lovely folk twists everywhere. And to think this is from 1974 is absolutely unbelievable. Great production and I especially love Richard's voice. Such an interesting piece of music.
My favourite offspring album. From start to finish an absolute blast.
This album contains the best spoon solo I've ever heard. Really enjoyed this. Even though it's a bit too long. Chris Cornell's voice is one of the best in rock music, so emotive and rough and yet so beautiful. I also enjoy a bit of audio slave, so this was a Great listen.
One of the most fun listens and discoveries from this list. Together with Bjorks band that we had earlier last year this was a total blast. Very silly lyrics wrapped in some very good music. It got a little bit annoying with Are We Not Men? , when it became very repetitive. But overall a fun funny funnyish listen. Just a little bit of fun.
You're in a train It's 1979 You're young old enough to travel alone grey world of January is passing by a world where you belong skies made of stone
And here's me thinking Dusty in Springfield But Actually She's in Memphis
Let the good times roll!!! This is a version of Queen I can get on board with. With same producer as some of Queen's records, it's not surprising that they sound a little bit like Queen in some places However despite this fact, I immensely enjoyed this record. It was happy, experimental, fun and above all funny (it's my best friend's girl, she used to be mine). Sad, funny, ironic and catchy as hell. With a great 34 minutes in length, I found myself playing this over and over again. I'd love to get this on vinyl if I come across it. 4.5 stars from me.
I mean, wow, classic after classic. Absolutely amazing album. Groundbreaking and incredible songs.
I did starts to enjoy this album after a few listens. The songs were very varied and the structures were very interesting. Great bass in there as well. Paper planes is an absolute banger. Will i put it on myself? Probably not. Minus another point for MIA being 45 minutes late on Boom Town when we were supposed to see her live.
It's Ziggy Stardust! I enjoyed getting to know this album better. After a few rotations it really gets under your skin. Although the production isn't as full or expansive as some of the peers from 1972, the sheer quality of the songs tower above the rest. This has undoubtedly had such a big impact on society and has left an unforgettable imprint on me.
Just a bit lame.
The hits kind of make up for the boring songs. But the boring songs really take away from the flow of the album.
I just don't think I'm a blues man.
In times of police brutality and violence, this was an apt album. Genuinely enjoyed this so much more than I thought. Could do without the f'ing and jef'ing though.
Absolutely groovy and wonderful album. This one got under my skin and will travel with me for a while. Thank you 1001 albums for bringing this to my attention. Reading more about him just makes me more fascinated by him. Played with Frank Zappa at 16? Played in his dad's band with a drawn on moustache when he was 11? Man, if this guy tours again, I need to see him!!
Lush melodies as if I was floating through space. I'm glad I listened to this and it was very enjoyable.
Absolutely relevant and required listening
Blues rock ripoffs in the best possible way
I don't see the why this gets so much hate. This was a very influential record from the mid-Nineties that has a LOT of great songs on it. Sea of tears is an absolute banger! I'm so glad that I got to listen to this cold and dreary day. It brightened up my mood and made me work faster.
Desert island disk. Would give it 6 stars.
For such a bastard, he's created some fun hits. This was a fun listen, at nearly 30 minutes of stomping it didn't leave me wanting for more though.
Banging!
Stunning album. A true classic. This is what I needed on a day like yesterday.
2.5, rounded down. Stealing cars was good but the rest was not. Just too much of the same and the production just hurts my ears
Yuck Drugs music.
I think I am very much a funk and soul kind of guy. This just sounds so nice in my ears. Automatic 5 for me. It's been a great week for funk and soul for the list.
It helps that I'm in Paris, but this makes me want to pick up smoking and sit outside a Parisian Café, with shades on and a cravat. So cool, so ahead.
Beyond rubbish
Vibey, feels like being in a sweaty bar sipping cold mojitos. In the 70s. With a moustache.
I enjoyed this much more than I thought. In a jamiroquai kind of enjoyment. It just passed me by. Good background music.
Catchy disco
I can safely say that I've not heard this record before. I've not heard any of the songs in my life. But I really enjoyed it! The rich textures were excellent and it did flow very nicely. minus point for the length.
Ben Watt doing a Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor impression here. Tunes boring, but forgettable.
My tribe, my vibe. Beautiful music on this beautiful day of sunshine and warmth.
Anyone voting less than 5 stars should be criminally prosecuted
Good memories of a sunny afternoon close to Cambridge.
Really enjoyed this after about 5 listens. A mix of Fleetwood Mac, but make it Tom Waits, but make it female. Lovely story telling and great production. Sounds beautiful on my headphones.
Depressing, delightful and demure. Just the way I like it. A name I had heard of, but never heard. Here you go Dev, 4 stars.
5 stars for this masterpiece any day, every day. Gorgeous modern day masterpiece. Thank you!
Starts super strong and then dies down a bit. Need to dive a bit deeper. I prefer their earlier work.
Another band that people love to hate. This one is actually crammed with hits and the songs that were not singles were very excellent and varied enough that it makes this a very engaging listen.
Much like Paul Weller, I never really got on with the Bob Mould projects. Grateful dead are also one of those bands that seem a bit too far away from what I like. Mind you, there are some good moments on here, Hoover Dam has some nice moments, but the muddy production has always been a let down for me. Sometimes they sound like pixies, sometimes they sound like what Foo Fighters are sounding like for the last 30 years. But it is not very interesting to me.
I knew this day was going to come. I will contribute to the cause of making this the worst rated album. Fuck this guy. The fact that this is rated higher than Einsturzende Neubauten and Throbbing Gristle is awful. Come on people!
A fantastic discovery thanks to this list. Will stick it on today a few times to get through this miserabele day.
We want that funk!
Riffs upon riffs. Brilliant album.
Angry growling and timeless. And so up my street. Great production and very engaging listen.
Absolutely stunning album. A real stand out from 2008. Sounds as fresh as it did when it came out.
Such an amazing album. This has been a recent discovery and I'm so glad I did. A wonderful piece of art. Stand out track is Marquee Moon. This band sounded so Noughties in the late 1970s!
Beautiful stuff
Great enjoyment was had with this!
Some songs were very good, but some songs were also very bad! 17 songs on an album is a lot of songs. My brain can't cope.
The classiest farewell, suitable for a true artist
Just a bit too long isn't it?
Prog rock classic
A good album, certainly not their best. But with the bangers on it, and that I'd probably play it at home, it'll have to be a 4
One good song. The rest mediocre and borderline annoying.
Stevie Wonder knock off. But done right.
Absolutely awesome
There is something about the Rolling Stones that I find insufferable. Similar to Primal Scream.
A contemporary classic made by a true tortured artist
I was not in the mood for this.
Loudest music I've ever heard. Full whack for me. Bang, no mash
Brilliantly paced 3 songs performed by one of jazz greats. This is by no means an entry level jazz record, the 3 songs are long and complicated. Nevertheless it sounds absolutely phenomenal. This is Coltrane at the top of his game.
I'm really settling into my status of this list as Enthousiast (that's what my profile says). And absolutely, this is a true masterpiece. First time listening to this, so it is all new, the songs blew me away in the plane to Barcelona. Stunning renditions of ancient folk songs. Richard Thompson is incredible on this. Makes me wanting for more. Of course there's the other side of folk and Cecil Sharp and his collected songs. Which makes this even more interesting.
Poor Davey Mustain
What a previous person said, nice to hear some change in the list, a breath of fresh air. However, it's a bit too harsh and too repetitive this wind. Can't say I really enjoyed listening to this.
The Beatles before they got good.
I could smell this smelly pile of poo from miles away. No thanks.
Better than I thought, worse than I wanted.
Is it a covers album? They use a lot of music from other songs! Have they just stolen the music that isn't theirs to start off with? Or have they enriched it and made it about 10x better? Yes they can!
I enjoyed these sweet pop songs.
I remembered this a lot less than I expected. And I enjoyed this a lot less than I wanted.
Terrible production. Boring songs
Really enjoyed this classic album. It's somewhere in between Fairport Convention and old Genesis. Great production and sounds wonderful. I can definitely see myself listening to this more.
Loved this record! Very much in the similar art rock / edging to glam rock spheres that Bowie was living in at that time. Bangers, and even the non-singles were wonderful. Consistency is key, and this is a good example of it.
Nope, dated, horrible and very bad. Regardless of what he's done in his private life, this is not a good album.
I did not enjoy this at all. Sorry.
Really great stuff! Brilliant mix of humour, interesting music and a wonderful voice
I've tried so hard and got so far, in the end, it doesn't even matter to me. 3 stars
This was a real grower. Initially when I stuck this on, I really didn't enjoy it. But when I got to know it, I really started to love it. So much so that I have now bought the album and 4 of his other ones! Goddamn you list!
My first Japan record I ever bought. Absolutely beautiful. That cover of all tomorrows parties is just gorgeous!
Probably their best!
Muse are an interstellar version of queen. This album though.. excellent.
In stead of this garbage, I listened to Milton Naciemento and Lo Borges' album Clube Da Esquina. That is a true 5 star experience. This garbage I can't even get through one song. How cringe is this? It's not aged very well.
In this scorching 34 degree heat, this went down like an absolute treat Hypnotising Mesmerising Beautiful instrumentation from a beautiful nation
An interesting collection of songs. Better than the what the Beatles were doing in 1965. Still a lot of covers
Babylon was the name of the kebab shop in my home town in the Netherlands. It was a grand place to go at 4 am in the morning after having a skinful of lager and smoking Gauloises blue cigarettes. The chips were absolutely delicious and so was the doner kebab. This was always my go to place as the other place wasn't as nice. Great album this, fuck the haters, great production, and readily available at all charity shops in the UK. So it must have sold pretty well. Well done David!
Mehnic street preachers
Gorgeous, sparse, beautiful haunting lyrics. And what's that springing sound that he's making? Commercially not a great success, but he's persevered and became one of the greats. Never seen him live unfortunately.
A wild and wonderful ride.

A bit twee

Incredible album
I sure am glad to have discovered this. Done some research, a fun and interesting deep dive into their history, how its come about, the fact that the Beatles were fans. Could have been about 10 or 15 minutes shorter though.
I'm going to say that this one is my least favourite of the first 3. Crocodiles really blew my mind. Ocean rain is a masterpiece. This one felt a bit boring in comparison
A really great album, fun, engaging, up tempo. What a lad, what a laugh.
Here's me thinking that Rush is the same as a corny version of Boston, power rock, glam bullshit. Actually, Rush live in their own universe, their own created planet, Planet Rush. They have been working so hard in the last 50+ years and this album is probably one of their best they've made. They have a die-hard fan base with guys that really love their music. I enjoyed digging deeper in their back catalogue and I might now watch their documentary. IT'S RUSH, MAN
