Reviews (page 3 of 7)

Django Django arrive at a resurgent British art rock scene and stake their claim with a mission of intent, showcasing their trade with grooves and bursts of invention and passion. A solid debut from a group who look as though they have the tools to maintain consistency. Favorites: Hail Bop, Default, Waveforms, Zumm Zumm, Hand of Man, Love's Dart, WOR, Life's a Beach.

Great record. Mix of country/ folk/ space sounds

This bounced along nicely. Really like it.

Quite catchy actually. Not lighting the world on fire but a solid 3.5. Will put it on the 4 side.

Fantastic album

Album definitely grows on you, a solid 4

The chiptune and other electronic elements add a neat dimension to an album that feels like it maybe should have been more popular in the States than it was.

Bit to old fifa but some bangers

I've heard about this band before but never listened to any albums of them before this challenge. This is an intriguing, unique and great album with stellar production. I liked the mix of psychedelia, art rock, electronic and experimentalism. With a few more melodic tunes it would be close to a 5, now it is rounded down to 4.

Buen disco, un rock alternativo interesante.

7/10 I enjoyed it. Totally passed me by when it came out, but that was when my attention was elsewhere. Hard to justify it being in this list, but 1001 is a lot of albums and this is probably in the top 1000 LPs. It's just hard to think of it as something exceptional, something for all time. Maybe this list is too long.

The kind of music that you can't help but move to.

3.5 That was pretty good. Like if the Beta Band and Beach Boys had a child. A surprising listen, not my usual thing but I definitely appreciated it.

Interesting sound, hard to describe. Electronic sounds face psychedelic notes. Like modern tribal music, trance or something. Unique stuff.

This one is a classic power hour album. Trance inducing songs and beats that locked me in. The wavelengths went back and forth but when I was on the same one, it amplified and hit hard. Default was a great highlight. I’ll come back to this one at the right times

That was a fun surprise. Probably my favorite so far of the 2010+ albums that I hadn't heard before. Tough to give this a 4 or 5 star. Rating: 4.4

nice album. paar lieder rechtig nice wöri weder lose, aber weiss ned vlt chömets au eif im album kontext geil aber denke eig au solo giel. paar lieder chli goofy tho

4/5 I liked it a lot. I think if this album came at a different time of my life this is a 5/5

Sounds interesting

Ah, a nice surprise as I near journey's end. Was a big fan of this when it came out and for many years afterward it stayed on rotation. Unfortunately I didn't really connect with any of their follow ups but this remains a fantastic, inventive, sunny, indie-pop record. Sooo many melodies, they're just everywhere. Especially in Wave Forms. To steal a line from another, negative review - this is just the Beta Band for the 2010s isn't it. And your problem with that is?

4.5 stars. Art rock with memorable grooves. Standouts are "Default", "Firewater" and "Wor".

Cool album, reminds me of Tame Impala but not quite there for me.

I had never heard of this one, but I enjoyed it a lot. Adding it to my regular rotation.

I liked it. Not something I usually would seek out but it was nice listening.

new band to me - late 60s feel, really nice

It's not too often you get such a joyous and vibrant sound that's also so heavily electronic. There are a lot of I-IIIb chord changes (where you'd normally expect i-IIIb) – noticeable everywhere throughout the album, including in the tracks Default, Waveforms, and Storm – giving the record an overall very happy, chill vibe. It's a refreshing change of pace from other 21st-century albums in this list. I do get a sense that the lyrics are a bit empty/not fleshed out, but as someone who rarely (if ever) takes lyrics into account when judging albums, that's not much of an issue for me. What *is* a slight issue is the singing, which sounds like if ELO or LCD Soundsystem took their vocals and made them sound even less... distinctive, I guess. It's hard to describe the problem I have with these kinds of vocals. On the plus side, it's the kind of voice that meshes well with a good instrumental section, so at times you kind of forget it's there. And that's certainly better than an actively bad vocal. 4/5 Key tracks: Hail Bop, Default, Life's a Beach

This felt like peak millennial hipster shit. A friend once joked that Default was about the Greek debt crisis.

very django

Weird and fun style of music that I didn't expect to enjoy so much! The indie style vocals are a great balance to the funky electronic beats. Almost all of the songs on this album were contenders for my favourite and the multiple listens it took to decide were all a great joy to me. Favourite: Waveforms Least: Skies Over Cairo

A 60’s vibe, electronic album. It’s inoffensive and well crafted. The songs are fun and pretty low key. I’m not familiar with this band but I really enjoyed this album.

This album has some great beats, bass lines, and harmonies. Dig it! I especially like Wor. Heavy reverb surf rockesque guitar with air raid sirens? I'm in!

I’m totally loving this! Great modern poppy psych songs with interesting, forward looking instrumentation. It feels like the natural progression music should have taken in the mainstream post 2000 had vapid, soulless pop and rap not been crammed down our collective throats.

custom_rating: 8

fun album

This is a really fun album -- a nice variety of very listenable songs.

An alt pop tryst. Fairly enjoyable

Different

Surprisingly, I loved this. A mix of styles and genres, but with a consistent groove and catchiness that I really enjoyed.

This was really fun - I'd listen to it again! 'Default' was the only track I'd heard before, I went and searched through my CDs and it was on Hottest 100 Vol 20 (which must be around the time I aged out of listening to Triple j!). All the tracks were a little samey - but give me some male vocal falsetto harmonies and I'm pretty happy. Beach boys meets indie-electro-chill-wave. I think I prefer Alt-J, but I'd listen to more of this band.

Definitely one of the more unique albums on this list, something it could really do with a lot more of. In a way this reminds me a lot of The Beach Boys, but just ever so slightly more experimental. On the whole, really great stuff.

This album sounds good overall, though it also comes across as very heavily inspired by Animal Collective as well. Setting that aside, it's a really well-made album. The harmonies are excellent, and the music supports the vocals really well. The production brings everything together into an album that's easy to listen to without being forgetable 4/5

there's an interesting trend of early 2010s albums from smaller artists which appear in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die: critically acclaimed, yet lukewarmly received on sites like this. do we blame Pitchfork, who had a far more outsized influence on music discussions at the time? are people just being contrarian for the sake of it? well, I wouldn't say this blew me away or anything, but I still found it really intriguing. Django Django's take on this blog era indie sound embraces electronics in a really cool way. sometimes this album feels like a synth piece, other times like a rocker, and sometimes both. this leads to a few pretty infectious cuts. the grab-bag mixture of influences from psych, disco, EDM, surf rock, folk, and plenty more means that the music rarely stays in one place for too long. some tracks are more memorable than others, but choice cuts like "Default," "Hand of Man" and "WOR" make it worthwhile. strong 7/10.

Pretty cool style with the echoey vocals. Interesting music and instrumentals too

great trip rock! 4 stars.

Neo Psychedilia being excellently composed electronically while at the same time the falsetto harmonization can get repetitive.

Aww, this is an old favourite. Doesn’t quite reach a 5 though, want to give it 4.5, and actually I think it’s the vocals that are a bit wishy washy. They are fantastic live though, so much energy to the music

This is excellent video game music. 7.5/10 Fave track: Wos

This was fun, I liked many songs. Stand-outs: Love's Dart, Storm

nice and catchy, would listen to again

Decent

know it well.

Rad album happy I know about it now.

Had me hooked in the first half, but I lost the thread by the end. Definitely worth a spin though!

I had never heard of this band. I am always scared when I see "art rock" as the description of the band, but this is a less New York-y version of Vampire Weekend (in some ways). I really enjoyed this album and many of these more modern albums feel like they were included just so modern albums could be included. That is not the case here. Really interesting sound and the standout tracks were: Hail Bop Default Waveforms Zumm Zumm Wor Life's a Beach For every Bjork album that gets shoved down my throat (not that she has bad music overall), it is nice to get albums in here that I am not familiar with where I enjoyed the sounds my ears were hearing.

cool album. really teeters on the warbly indie psychedelic music i personally really like. that being said, although i liked the sound and the production, none of the songs really left too much of an impression on me. i did enjoy the intro into 'hail bop' 'waveforms' and 'life's a beach' and also found interesting the more egyptian inspired cut 'skies over cairo' but the rest of the album was strictly good, not great.

New to me. Solid what...EDM Pop?

It's indie but they remembered not to be boring.

I must admit that Wikipedia describing this as an Art Rock, Neo-Psychedelia, Electronic Rock, Experimental Pop album put me off, but the opening instrumental track, "Introduction", helped change my mind. Some tracks reminded me of early Pink Floyd, for example, "Waveforms".

Nice and intresting

A sort of electronic-twang thing going on that was pretty fun to listen to.

Trippy goodness. Did not know what to expect. It’s fun.

An unexpected bop. The Spotify description made it sound more experimental that it really was, but we enjoyed it nonetheless.

I like this album better than most modern rock albums for its excellent integration of synths into the sound. The patterns and musical structures played out quite well. I did like the first half better than the second half, which made the record feel a little unbalanced at times. Overall I liked the album as is, but I don't see myself listening to this on a regular basis. Favorite song: Hail Bop. Overall score 7.4/10

This album got better as it went on. The mix of Beach Boys-like melodies and harmonies combined with the electro-pop rhythm section hit me just right on this listen. It strikes me as something that I wouldn't be able to pick up on any given day, but it's really well-crafted. 4 stars.

Quirky, eclectic and good! 4.2

Know this one very well

Unexpectedly different and cool. I was in the right mood for some art rock and this scratched the itch

This is interesting. I almost wish I hadn't got it on boxing day so I could sit with it a little longer. Enjoyable

Surprisingly enjoyable 4/4

Lots of fun this album. Sounds like a higher octane Beta Band. Less experimental the melodies are easy to find as they're very much front and center. And there are enough Alien Sounds to keep things looking squarely to the future. 4 stars

Makes me remember that there are good bands to come out of the 2010s half of the “alternative” era . Still kind of has that apple commercial vibe but with a lot more flavor. Plus it’s not their fault this sound has become synonymous with advertising. Good stuff

Wow. First listen and loved it

Hmm, not sure exactly, but I think I dig this. It’s low 4 territory, but it’s a 4 still.

This album had some high highs and some low lows for me, it will take a few listens for me to really figure out my favorites. But I do plan to listen again, which says something! The opening two tracks together are great, and I absolutely love the album art.

I'd often heard of these guys but never took the time to seek them out. This sounds like the album Beta Band could have released if they stayed together and were binging Animal Collective albums for 6 months. It's equal parts experimental, eclectic, and very poppy. It's just the right mix to be interesting and accessible at once. Take it too seriously and you risk being dismissed as a hipster. But just have fun with it and you'll have a great time.

Was definitely skeptical going into this one, but im leaving very pleasantly surprised. This was a hidden gem I never knew about. Every song was different despite sticking to a specific style. I thought Skies Over Cairo sounded like the backing track to a sand level in Mario kart, in a good way. Overall a unique album that I will hopefully come back to.

Really enjoyed this.

Vibed to this in the gym. Didn’t mind it. Simpsons: No

Absolutely banging

Who would know that in 2025, an album from 2012 based on a music genre from the 1960's would vibe so well? On the one hand, there is a bit of annoyance that a modern band made a psychedelic rock album because Heaven knows that there was not enough of that to go around back in the... 1960s, where the genre honestly has a much more appropriate home. What this album ended up being though, is something that at least to this listener, could very well be the perfect homage to the music of yesteryear without being an imitation. The album is today, or it could be back then, but it does not matter... happy in 2025.

29/10/24 Surprisingly a harmless album.

Pretty good

Indy. Budget Alt-J

Really cool

Cool drumming

This is really excellent 4/5

It's good fun. I like it.

Took a toilet nap at work while listening to skies over Cairo and had a dream about Mario in a desert level

never heard of Django Django before this and holy shit what a good ride. its a perfect example of why I like this list, discovering great music for the first time. Despite it being released in 2012 it has a really funky 70's feel to it. Firewater stuck out to me more than the others, it did get a little too psychadelic for me in some spots but overall a pretty good experience.

I really liked this!

another neat album that i never would have discovered on my own! love the spacey synths and desert ambience on this album. definitely coming back to these in the future. favorites: introduction, hail bop, default, waveforms, skies over cairo, silver rays

I enjoyed this, and it kind of defied being categorized, which I found interesting.

I knew the song Default from this album, but it was enjoyable as a whole. Would love to listen to more from them

This album reminded me quite a bit of the Beta Band. Which is a good thing because the Beta Band is awesome. A good mix of funky and weird and psychedelic. I enjoyed it a lot.

4 - a trip and good ambient music

mgmt is, in my opinion, the best band of all time. not necessarily my favorite, that changes day to day, but i think they are the best. this gives off the vibe of mgmt is select music, and is all in all a really well made album that has a nice groove, theme, and feel. i really did enjoy this, but i found some tracks to be more forgettable and less exciting than i wanted. overall still very good.

first listen very interesting

I had forgotten about this band. Glad to find them here. This is really excellent. Saved half of it. Quality modern music. Like, if The Stone Roses, Beck and Hot Chip were in a band that played at The Road House in Twin Peaks.

I've never heard of Django Django before, but I was big into indie rock when this came out, so I'm not sure how I missed it, especially since it was on the Rolling Stone list of best albums for 2012. Regardless, I'm heading into this album blind, and I have absolutely no expectations for what I'm about to hear. Wow, I'm really impressed by this album. It's not really my jam, but I think Django Django has an incredibly unique sound, and it's an objectively good album. This album did a great job of taking things that are opposites and blending them together. I liked how the acoustic and digital elements were blended together in a way that was really smooth and seamless; sometimes sounds like that can be chaotic or muddled, but this album really avoided it. Also, this album seemed to draw on both western and eastern influences in terms of the arrangements, and the band managed to blend those together really well. The whole album was really interesting and full of diverse tracks, but every song felt well connected to the overall sound of the album. I didn't find any particular part of the album to be stronger than any other part, and I was really impressed by that balance. While this album really isn't the sort of thing I'd listen to again, I can definitely see why it got so much praise from critics, and why it has so many fans in the user reviews. At a time when the Indie scene was particularly crowded, this album stands out as a unique entry in the genre.

Enjoyed a lot of it. Nice surprise. I had heard some before but never knew Django Django.

Hm. Pleasantly surprised by this one! I'll definitely check out the rest of their work. This was just...easy to listen to. No other way for me to describe it.

I really liked this album, in fact I listened to it twice. Default and WOR are just so catchy.. Perhaps a little redundant at times but a great listen.

Fresh, compellingly interesting, unique and a good listen. Will be listening again.

Better then i was expecting. I'd listen to this again.

New to me band and I liked it a lot. Will listen to this one again.

This album was all over the place, but in a good way. I saw the "art rock" label for this album before turning it on and expected the worst, but I was pleasantly surprised. Some of the highlights were surf rock, psychedelia, synth rhythms, etc. all with a modern twist. Not much else to say honestly, would recommend listening to this at least once through.

I like it.

how mad is everyone going to be if i say this is what i imagine the beach boys would sound like in this time period. i liked this a lot more than anticipated!

Actually really liked this kinda indie tricky 2012 album

Really enjoyed this. Will relisten soon!

loved me some Django django django django!

Pretty good. I never have anything interesting to say about these albums, but it was, in fact, good.

An interesting listen for sure. Lots of cool sonic experimentation. Rockin' but I didn't love the singing as much as the rest of the recording. Would def listen again.

I bought this on iTunes after hearing Hail Bop on 6Music. I basically do really like the sound. I found it surprisingly difficult to get through a whole album though, and never managed it at the time. I still think it's a bit long, but like the vibe. Some really good quirky harmonies and chord progressions; a couple of tracks perhaps tipping into "irritating". I've no idea what their more recent offerings might sound like, as they'd completely dropped off my radar. Oh, and I'd always thought they were American.

Never heard this before and really liked it.

I liked this for the most part. Might have to give it another go. 4/5

Blast from the past and a riot at that

I was completely unfamiliar with this band, so this album was a great surprise. I'm a big fan of late 60s psychedelia, so this really appealed to me. I'm looking forward to listening to it many more times.

I've never heard of this band, which is odd, as 2012 was pretty much the peak of my British indie band obsession. (Arctic Monkeys was my personality for a while during that time.) This album is vibrant and energetic, although I'm not the biggest fan of the chant-like vocals. Still great for a debut. Favourite tracks: Wor, Life's a Beach, Skies Over Cairo

They are really great with rhythmic patterns, like certain Animal Collective. Or maybe Beta Band on adderall. Really creative patterns throughout. I really liked this album. Could possibly improve with more interesting vocal melodies.

I haven’t heard of Django Django before. This album art leaves me feeling very confused, almost like early AI trying to draw a sparkly turtle. I truly don’t know what I’m looking at with it, so I certainly start off intrigued. I enjoyed how the album seemed to take me around the world, from aspects of surf rock to Aladdin-esque Arabic melodies. It didn’t knock my socks off, but it certainly kept my attention throughout. I’m glad to have heard this.

It's sooo 2010's-coded and I love it!)

Incredibile 8/10

A great flowing album with tons of different techniques being used. Great start to the day.

I liked the synth. Fun alt rock type vibes

Somehow this passed me by at release. Enjoyed it, some parts didn’t connect but enjoyable, interesting songs

I was really optimistic that this album was going to be a great find, until the singing started a couple minutes in. It is better than fine but short of great. It's all pretty interesting though so that's enough for some stars.

Catchy Brit electro pop with good 60s style vocal harmonies, an original sounding group

Great! Reminds me a bit of Hot Chip. Not an album I’ll have on repeat, but it was one I’ll dip into every now and then.

Never heard of this before, but then Default came on and it felt like out of the recesses of my mind. Great track. Enjoyable overall.

It's very hard to put this on genres shelf. It's all around the place. And it's a good thing. Very melodic. For an indie enjoyer it's a must-listen album.

An incredible fun album with an eclectic range of music from surf to electro to rock

I started out skeptical of this album because I’ve never heard of this group and because Introduction is a terrible introduction. But it turns out the album is cheerful and boppy. They’ve won me over.

Bouncy fun. Listen to this again.

I really appreciate the vast experimentation of sounds happening here, but the real wonder is how the band made it all so simple. These tracks feel effortless, but also filled with depth and genre blends that keep you invested in what comes next.

Django Django rides from track to track with melodies unchained and eclectic electric fun fired off at a machine gun’s pace.

Shi was firee uhhh its a strong 8/10. 🔥 really enjoyed it.

The vocals remind me of Beck, the instrumentals build like LCD Soundsystem constantly adding on, and a lot of the instrumentals kind of remind me of the white-boy-world-music of Paul Simon's "Graceland". Maybe the latter is why I'm not "in love" with this record (yeah, I'm not big on "Graceland", sue me), but this record is fascinating and interesting to listen to. On a list with so much forgettable synth pop, this is actually a record that's doing something that kind of sounds "fresh". Call it a 4.5. Favorite tracks: "Love's Dart", "Hail Bop", "Default"

Not bad as background/sampling music, but not much to listen to, necessarily.

Pretty good!

A very good modern day indie record - surprising at every turn, warm and fun.

Man, missed this, and sorry that I did. Just some great grooves all the way through.

3.5/5. I liked some of what was going on here. But there's something about it that's off. But I have not heard much like this before, so I'm kind of into it.

Very fun, unique sound. I definitely want to return to this album in the future.

Terrific! I listened to it twice. This one is really worth your time. One of the best albums I have 'discovered' from the project so far. Just quite an interesting and talented sound overall.

At first, I thought this sounded very 2012. That was right around the peak of what I’ve always referred to as Mostly Cheery Dancy Rock™. Made a whole playlist. It suits the mood sometimes. Bleachers, Young the Giant, WALK THE MOON, Empire of the Sun, BØRNS, M83, Bastille, MGMT, you know the type. But I’d never heard of Django Django. Turns out it's not Mostly Cheery Dancy Rock. It’s better. None of the aforementioned is on the list. MGMT was, but was undeservedly removed. I think maybe Bleachers should be there. Turns out Hot Chip’s 2012 album is on the list, but we haven’t hit it yet with 30 left to go. So we’ll revisit Mostly Cheery Dancy Rock. But again, Django Django isn’t that. It was a terrific surprise, and one that I’ll be sure to revisit. And put on a playlist. But not that one.

Never heard this before and really enjoyed it. Reminiscent of the Shins. Didn’t care about the vocals all that much but they clearly had fun instrumentally.

3.75/5 Starts of great, get a little bit worse at the end but overall pretty solid. It’s just an easy listen and not a standard album. Favourite songs: - Hail Bop - Default

well this was an unexpected delight

With its catchy hooks, innovative production, and timeless appeal, it remains a standout achievement in the realm of indie rock and electronic music. While it may not be without its flaws, its strengths far outweigh any shortcomings, making it a must-listen for fans of inventive and adventurous music.

Today’s album is by Django Django. Never heard of the band. They are ok, good background music, enjoyed the album. Wor and Storm were my favorites from the album. Added both to my playlist. Skies over Cairo was a lot of fun. Overall 4

I know nothing of this artist. Really digging this first track. I’m really enjoying this album. Firewater has a great groove. “Zumm Zumm” sounds like a video game. Skies over Cairo was one of my favorites from this album. I really enjoyed this album.

New age meets folk/indy. Pretty solid self titled.

Love this album. Really dancy and interesting production

otherworldly. i’m into it.

Delighted to be surprised with something I had never even heard of until now. Listened to it without any context and enjoyed it. In fact, as soon as it ended, I played it again - a rarity around here Reminds me a little bit of 1990s-2000s psych like Olivia Tremor Control - I think they use the same sound effect during one of the breaks between tunes, which I like to imagine was a conscious tribute.

upbeat interesting Rock, enjoyed that

Hail bop Default Fire water Loves dart Wor Storm Feels experimental but they’re not trying to be like look at us we’re different, we’re innovators. They’re just having fun and it’s fun to listen to

Hmmm... not what I expected from "Art Rock". This is better that the other experimental musicians. Less indulgent and more nuanced. Interesting listen.

Pretty dang cool surprise. A spacey ethereal sounds band with some tribal/junglely beats and a lot of chorus/overdub vocals that really works. The beats are toe-tapping good, a bit quirky, and would fit in a late 60's zombies camp or alternative rock hoodoo gurus vibe. Zumm Zumm was a little irritating (skipping that on repeat listens), but overall it was really enjoyable.

Pretty cool album. Great mix of sound. Like an alternative electronica kinda sound. First half sounded like a nintendo game on acid from the future. Second half was more western, even beachy at some points. Great harmonies.

Refreshing, and hey! That's that song from GTA.

p932. 2012. 4 stars. Came cold to this and was pleasantly surprised - quality harmonies and tunes. Sounds like Brian Wilson's hipster grandkids discovering surf rock and LSD. On the replay list.

Really good album I wasn’t familiar with

Art rock, neo-psychedelia, electronic rock, experimental pop.

This one is fun

I hadn't never heard of Django Django, so it came as a surprise, I liked it. Had a bit of a 70's psych, prog, funky vibe to some of it, with an overall modern, progressive sound. Good enough arrangements, thoughtful lyrics and musical variation to keep it interesting throughout with head-bopping rhythms and beats. It engaged me enough to have a second listen the next day. Why hadn't I heard of this before??

Synthi

This was way better than I was expecting. Probably needs some time to build up in the consciousness, but it's nice and varied with some genuinely interesting diversions.

Only knew the name and nothing more before today but this was a lot of fun and an unexpected hit with me. The 2010s was a quiet period for me with new music so it’s good to find some hidden gems that had passed me by.

Super debut! Strangely I didn‘t stick to their development…need to change this. Mega smart, bouncy, powerful, collagy, like Johnny Cash songs performed by the Beta Band and played on 45. 4.4

Albums like this make me want an option of half stars

You know how most of the movies these days are all about setting up the kid of the hero from the 80s movies? This is like that, but the hero is The Beach Boys. Sprinkle in a little Beck, Vampire Weekend, and Alt-J as the suspected father and you’ve got a Maury Povich show in the making. The tracks are smooth, the lyrics are non-sensical but all in all it’s a good experience.

Western-inspired space rock vibe.

While I did enjoy this, I don't think the inclusion on this list is justified. It sounded good, but I had never heard of these guys before and they didn't leave much of a lasting impression on me. 3.5 rounded up.

New to me. Very good music

Incredible.

01) Introduction - 7,5 02) Hail Bop - 8,5 03) Default - 8,5 04) Firewater - 8,0 05) Waveforms - 8,0 06) Zumm Zumm - 8,5 07) Hand of Man - 7,5 08) Love's Dart - 7,5 09) WOR - 8,5 10) Storm - 7,5 11) Life's a Beach - 8,5 12) Skies Over Cairo - 8,5 13) Silver Rays - 8,0 TOTAL: 8,08 (81/100) This is so my cup of tea, why have I never heard of this band? It's kind of Hot Chip-ish... Uuuh, who knows if Hot Chip is on this list?

Hele gave muziek!

Art rock, neo-psychedelia, electronic rock, experimental pop.

very interesting. a bit altj-ish. first few tracks in a row up till "firewater" are great. too much lead in with the instrumental at times. but overall i liked it.

Well that was fun. Bit different.

I think this just earns a 4 for bringing a bit of blueiness to the indie art rock vibe that I liked. It was definitely a solid album.

Ooh. A good sound, maybe a bit too similar to a few other things on the list.

Didn't know what to expect but definitely was pleasantly surprised and dug this album. It's definitely unique in terms of the stuff that I listen to. They are doing some cool stuff and certainly borrow from an eclectic range of genres.

I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed this one.

This was odd. I liked it. A little repetitive and the vocals weren't too my taste. But this is still really good

I'm ambivalent on this one, it's a 3.5 for me. It feels like a band I should explore more deeply and the songs do have character, but most of them don't feel like they're going to stick with me. Maybe it needs another listen, so for the sake of that doubt I'll give it a 4.

I hadn’t heard of this one and was pleasantly surprised. Easily listenable, catchy tunes. Not sure what genre I would call this - Wikipedia put a bunch of weird ones like art-rock but I would suggest maybe alt-pop? I didn’t love it but it was pretty cool so I think it only just reaches a 4 rating for me. Listens: 2 Fave Track: Hand Of Man Rating: 4/5

It was an interesting listening. Fav'd 1

Riktigt bra. Påminner en del om LCD Soundsystem.

Massive noncing coat of an album

This album perfectly encapsulates the sound and spirit of the best psychedelic music while still sounding new and exciting. The harmonies on this album strongly evoke the Byrds for me while the instrumentation recontextualizes 60s psychedelia into a modern electronic landscape while still retaining the recognizability of that music. Furthermore, the beats are simplistic andfeel familiar (there is a version of the Bo Diddley beat). The result is driving, engaging and is quite an achievement.

Je suis de retour 😅🥵🧐 Default : Bobofifi bobobo no lolololo Bobo bobobo bibibobobobo fibibi bi bobobobobo!!! ...

Finally, a British band I'd not heard of before that I actually enjoy! They're like a new and improved version of The Beta Band. I wish more modern groups were willing to be this fun and playful.

Really different sound, but one that is great. Had listened before, but not as active as this time around and I really enjoyed it. 4/5

I've heard some Django Django before. This album was a good listen, but probably not a must listen going forward, though I did quite like Hail Bop.

Such a fun album! Like MGMT and David Byrne had a baby.

Wild album. I had no idea what to expect, but I definitely didn't expect this. Nice! Standouts: Hail Bop, Default, Firewater, Zumm Zumm, Great! 4/5

Fun experimental art pop album, I enjoyed this and would listen again.

Rhythm and groove based art-rock, with chant-like harmonic vocals low down in the mix. Lots of electronic and unusual noises. Very reminiscent of the Beta Band's later incarnation as The Aliens. Pleasingly weird. I like it. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Default Date listened: 14/11/23

Bravo Bravo

Kinda dig it. Original.

Atmospheric, kinda jazzy/rocky, layered vocals, felt desert-ey. Fun, hard to describe

Django Django is a band that deserves more attention. Their self-titled debut album, released in 2012, is a refreshing and original mix of genres and influences, from surf rock to synth-pop, from folk to funk. The album showcases the band’s talent for crafting memorable melodies, intricate rhythms, and playful lyrics, while also experimenting with different sounds and textures. The album is full of surprises and twists, such as the spaghetti western-inspired “Hail Bop”, the hypnotic and groovy “Waveforms”, the quirky and catchy “Default”, and the epic and atmospheric “Skies Over Cairo”. The album also features some more subdued and introspective moments, such as the tender and harmonious “Hand of Man”, the dreamy and nostalgic “Love’s Dart”, and the elegant and refined “Silver Rays”. The album is a cohesive and coherent whole, with each song complementing and enhancing the others. The band’s production is also impressive, as they manage to create a rich and diverse sonic landscape with minimal instrumentation and equipment. The album is a testament to the band’s creativity, versatility, and originality, and a delight for the ears of any music lover. Django Django is an album that I will keep coming back to, and I give it 4 stars out of 5

good vibe

A little bit African a little bit low fi a lot bit soundtrack

Loved this album when it came out, loved the prompt to revisit it 10 years later. Adding it back in the rotation. British art pop with some crazy cool sounds.

Very good

Heard before. I loved listening to Default after I heard it for the first time in a trailer for Jacob 2/2. Love the wacky atmosphere, it's got a round feeling to it. + Hail Bop + Default + Firewater + Waveforms + Zumm Zumm

I was wondering if they’ll show up here, while not particularly influential or inventive, it’s just good energy and vibes all around. Stand out songs for me are Hail Bop and Wor

This is an interesting combination of indie, electro pop and harmonization that my co-judge says reminds her a bit of the Beach Boys. For me, they’re more in the vein of Hot Chip. It all comes together perfectly on “Default” which I’ve listened to quit a bit since I signed up to Spotify. The song “Hail Bop” sounds like it could be a remake of a “Steeleye Span” hit. There are many listenable tracks, though sometimes the tom-tom driven beat sounds mechanical. It was so much better on second listen, I'll round up.

This album sucks, unless you love weird fun and chill groves and awesome hangouts. Oh, you do? Then this album rules.

I quite like the harmonies and energy of the songs but favourite track is Hand of Man.

Wow! I really liked this a lot. Great energy. Yet another group that I've discovered through this project that I need to listen to more of! 4 stars.

I liked this a lot. The sound and feel transformed throughout in an unusual and interesting way - from a kind of 80s science fiction vibe to things reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel, neo-folk in the vein of Shearwater, to British post-rockabilly like P.J. Harvey and John Parish. Never heard of this band, definitely up to try more from them.

Its pretty good actually, but doesnt really know when to end

Man the early 2010s was a weird time. This British band came out of nowhere with a psychedelic-infused world trance-like debut not quite sounding like anything else. Since then, I've re-visited Django x2 (x2) several times and it's quite clear to me that my enjoyment with this record is very dependent on my headspace - sometimes is just too much, and sometimes it's a perfect match. This time around it was the latter. 'Default' is such a banger.

It’s been quite some time since the last time I indulged in some Django^2. Django Django is one of those albums that sounds exactly like its cover. It’s a thrilling yet somewhat confusing ride that takes every unexpected turn presented to it. Probably won’t be that long before I visit these guys once again.

Really creative sound. Nothing quite the same as it. Sometimes a bit gimmicky but well worth a listen.

Jaunty and enjoyable, a band i’d never heard of but well worth further repeat listens. Rare to find a straight up bouncy fun eclectic album that doesn’t wane or overstay its welcome.

The songs are catchy and upbeat but not too in your face. I also like the mix of electronica and alternative with some folk elements.

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Hail bop, Default

I had not heard of Django Django or any of the music on this self-titled album. This album was a pleasant surprise. I was surprised how consistent the album was. Each track was engaging and sounded like part of the same whole, while maintaining individual character. The percussion and rhythm sections were frequently the first elements to draw my attention in to the individual tracks. Once my attention was there, the rest of the composition carried me along to the end. I would not confuse Django Django with another band, but there is something to their music that feels like it fits in well with some alternative or indie-pop groups that I have listened to. "Zumm Zumm" reminded me of the borrowing of latin rhthyms done by the Talking Heads / David Byrne, and is one of several tracks that I saved for a re-listen ("Silver Rays", "Firewater", "Storm"). I still have several albums to review for this list. I hope I remember to come back to Django Django for a second listen.

Something I'd not heard of before, I enjoyed the variety on the album and for the most part thought it sounded good.

Really digging this! Great blend of Devo and Krautrock and surfy stuff. Going with a 3-4.

excellent, would rate 4.5. Definitely listen more.

It's like if the Pet Shop Boys were a boy's band

This was good. Never heard of Django Django before, but I really liked all of the experimentation, even though every song still sounded very clean and pop-y.

Forgot how good this is

interesting; pretty catchy

Catchy psychedelic modern art rock

Solid trancy album, never heard of these folks before but I'll prob listen to them more

Good synths go brrrrz. Psychedelia videogame-core on point. It could have done without a couple of the weaker songs, otherwise it is good vibes all around with this debut. Fav tracks: Default, Waveforms

Had been meaning to give this a listen for some time, glad I finally did - enjoyed it

Had never heard of this, good mix of styles, some places a bit laggy, overall enjoyed it!

This was actually a vibe

Sounded how I expected

Pleasantly surprised by this one. Kinda like the Animals meets AJR, but meshed into a unique vibe. I may think differently after a few more listens, but . . . 4.

The label "art-rock" gave me hesitation but it was actually really fun.

Really liked this one! Felt like a return to the indie genre, and therefore the high school era for me.

Interesting, will add to playlists. Had not heard or of them before.

Enjoyed

The first half of this album goes suuuuuper hard and I love it, second half peters off a bit though, had my head bopping all the way through with the mild jungle beats at points

A good electronic pop album. Perfect for the long run I need today. 4/5

Erg leuke plaat, gevarieerd, hip

Fun album, not really much else to say, just really like the rhythm

a cute album they sound like they had fun

This filled an interesting space in that it is both easy-ish listening to have on in the background, and is also interesting enough musically to focus on in isolation.

I'd heard of Django Django a *while* ago, and never checked them out. story time, fall 2012, 20 years old, visiting Portland OR with classmates, become obsessed with the idea of going into a music store and buying some indie music, really live out my vague understanding of how to behave like these hipsters I've heard so much about. I pick up Yeasayer's "Fragrant World," guy at the counter is like, "hey if you like Yeasayer you should check out Django Django" "Django Django?" "yeah Django Django" "cool, will do" anyway I never got around to checking out Django Django. Now that I've listened, turns out I wasn't missing much, like "Django Django" is fine, pleasingly eclectic. Wasn't interested in checking out the rest of the Django Django catalogue based on "Django Django," though. Yeasayer had at least 3 albums that would deserve the slot more than Django Django's "Django Django," but there's probably also at least a couple hundred albums on this stupid thing that should get out of the way before Django Django should have to. Django.

This was pretty cool! Definitely hadn't heard of them but brit art rock can be fun. A couple of tracks I'd def revisit. I thought it started strong, ok middle, decent finish.

Another release that goes on my very good, but not great list. This is imminently listenable and enjoyable. When this was released, it struck me as a mishmash of styles that worked but didn't create anything more than a sum of the parts. I hear elements of Beck, Beta Band and a nod or two to Krautrock. Creative, but not groundbreaking. Four stars but wouldn't make my 1001 list.

An interesting mix of styles. This album reminds me of prog rock, Beach Boys harmonies, guitar led rock and electonica. I usually really don’t like that last genre but it didn’t bother me in this blend.

Electronic sounding. Kind of cool

The whole opening of this album sounds like a Danger track. It builds up really nicely. There's a lot of interesting composition and production going on, but it's still very easy to listen to. The synth section in Life's A Beach is fucking killer.

Really good. I know Django Django a bit but only through osmosis, never really listened to them properly and quite enjoyed this.

I enjoyed this more than I expected to!

I was not familiar with this one going in, so I had no idea what to expect. It was surprisingly good. Experimental and folksy electronica with a beat. The only negative is that all the songs start to sound the same pretty quickly.

Art rock, neo-psychedelia, electronic rock, experimental pop.

django!

I had heard a few songs off the album and am questioning why I hadn't listened to the full album before. It's a fun neo-up beat album!

Really interesting album

When this album came out iTunes gave you three free songs weekly or monthly, usually from new artists and “Life’s a beach” was one. Never listened to the full album and really enjoyed it, really remind me of alt-j (coincidentally, breezeblocks was an iTunes free song) 4/5

Reminded me of animal collective when I first listened, saw another review that said anco and The Beach Boys and I think that is pretty spot on. Fun high energy album

found this to be very good

I cannot describe why I like it, but I do! A lot reminds me of the Pogo remixes of Disney.

One hit wonder, vreemd genoeg.

They have a clear sound that they really push hard on this record, with reverb-y guitar, maraca percussion, and looped synthesizers abound. Often falls into a very generic territory that it does not escape from

Eclectic mix of genres and sounds. Reminiscent of 60s pop, especially the Beach Boys sort of harmonies, but with super weird synth sound effects and glitches sprinkled through. The percussion on this album was interesting as well. I must say, however, that it is an exhausting sound. It gets tiring quickly and for me the album dipped down in quality in the middle a bit because of it. The last three songs were a great way to close the album.

Good songwriting, fun spin!

Skies Over Cairo sounds like a Mario desert stage, its super distracting.
